Pancharatra: Exchange of words between Bhishma and Shishupala.
भीष्म उवाच॥

नैषा चेदिपतेर्बुद्धिर्यया त्वाह्वयतेऽच्युतम्। नूनमेष जगद्भर्तुः कृष्णस्यैव विनिश्चयः ॥२-४१-१॥
naiṣā cedipaterbuddhiryayā tvāhvayate'cyutam। nūnameṣa jagadbhartuḥ kṛṣṇasyaiva viniścayaḥ ॥2-41-1॥
[नैषा (naiṣā) - not this; चेदिपतेः (cedipateḥ) - of the king of Cedi; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; यया (yayā) - by which; त्वा (tvā) - you; आह्वयते (āhvayate) - invites; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - Acyuta; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; एष (eṣa) - this; जगत्-भर्तुः (jagat-bhartuḥ) - of the sustainer of the world; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; विनिश्चयः (viniścayaḥ) - decision;]
(Not this of the king of Cedi intellect by which you invites Acyuta. Surely this of the sustainer of the world, of Kṛṣṇa indeed, is the decision.)
This is not the intention of the king of Cedi by which he invites you, O Acyuta. Surely, this is indeed the decision of Kṛṣṇa, the sustainer of the world. (2-41-1)
को हि मां भीमसेनाद्य क्षितावर्हति पार्थिवः। क्षेप्तुं दैवपरीतात्मा यथैष कुलपांसनः ॥२-४१-२॥
ko hi māṃ bhīmasenādya kṣitāvarhati pārthivaḥ। kṣeptuṃ daivaparītātmā yathaiṣa kulapāṃsanaḥ ॥2-41-2॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; भीमसेनात् (bhīmasenāt) - from Bhīmasena; अद्य (adya) - today; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; क्षेप्तुम् (kṣeptum) - to cast; दैवपरीतात्मा (daivaparītātmā) - whose mind is overpowered by fate; यथा (yathā) - just as; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; कुलपांसनः (kulapāṃsanaḥ) - disgrace of the family;]
(Who indeed, from Bhīmasena, today on the earth, deserves (is able) king to cast me, whose mind is overpowered by fate, just as this disgrace of the family?)
Who indeed among kings on earth today, except Bhīmasena, could cast me down, whose mind is overpowered by fate, just as this disgrace of the family (has done)? (2-41-2)
एष ह्यस्य महाबाहो तेजोंशश्च हरेर्ध्रुवम्। तमेव पुनरादातुमिच्छत्पृथुयशा हरिः ॥२-४१-३॥
eṣa hy asya mahābāho tejoṃśaś ca harer dhruvam। tam eva punar ādātum icchat pṛthuyaśā hariḥ ॥2-41-3॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; तेजः-अंशः (tejaḥ-aṃśaḥ) - portion of radiance; च (ca) - and; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; पुनः (punar) - again; आदातुम् (ādātum) - to take; इच्छत् (icchat) - desiring; पृथुयशा (pṛthuyaśā) - of great fame; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
(This indeed, O mighty-armed, is a portion of the radiance of Hari; certainly, Hari of great fame desires to take him back again.)
O mighty-armed one, this is certainly a portion of Hari's radiance; Hari, renowned and illustrious, now wishes to reclaim him. (2-41-3)
येनैष कुरुशार्दूल शार्दूल इव चेदिराट्। गर्जत्यतीव दुर्बुद्धिः सर्वानस्मानचिन्तयन् ॥२-४१-४॥
yenaiṣa kuruśārdūla śārdūla iva cedirāṭ। garjatyatīva durbuddhiḥ sarvānasmānacintayan ॥2-41-4॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (person); कुरुशार्दूल (kuruśārdūla) - O tiger among Kurus; शार्दूल (śārdūla) - tiger; इव (iva) - like; चेदिराट् (cedirāṭ) - the king of the Cedis; गर्जति (garjati) - roars; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - of wicked understanding; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (of); अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अचिन्तयन् (acintayan) - disregarding;]
(By whom this (person), O tiger among Kurus, like a tiger, the king of the Cedis, roars exceedingly, of wicked understanding, disregarding all of us.)
O tiger among the Kurus, it is by him—this king of the Cedis, who, like a tiger, roars exceedingly with wicked intent, disregarding all of us. (2-41-4)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ततो न ममृषे चैद्यस्तद्भीष्मवचनं तदा। उवाच चैनं सङ्क्रुद्धः पुनर्भीष्ममथोत्तरम् ॥२-४१-५॥
tato na mamṛṣe caidyas tadbhīṣmavacanaṃ tadā। uvāca cainaṃ saṅkruddhaḥ punar bhīṣmam athottaram ॥2-41-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; न (na) - not; ममृषे (mamṛṣe) - endured; चैद्यः (caidyaḥ) - the king of Chedi; तद्भीष्मवचनम् (tadbhīṣmavacanam) - that Bhishma's statement; तदा (tadā) - at that time; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - very angry; पुनः (punar) - again; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - to Bhishma; अथ (atha) - then; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply;]
(Then the king of Chedi did not endure that Bhishma's statement at that time; and, very angry, he again said this reply to Bhishma.)
Then the king of Chedi, unable to bear Bhishma's words at that time, spoke again to Bhishma in great anger with this reply. (2-41-5)

द्विषतां नोऽस्तु भीष्मैष प्रभावः केशवस्य यः। यस्य संस्तववक्ता त्वं बन्दिवत्सततोत्थितः ॥२-४१-६॥
dviṣatāṃ no'stu bhīṣmaiṣa prabhāvaḥ keśavasya yaḥ। yasya saṃstavavaktā tvaṃ bandivatsatatotthitaḥ ॥2-41-6॥
[द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; नः (naḥ) - our; अस्तु (astu) - may be; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - terrible; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; influence; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa); यः (yaḥ) - which; यस्य (yasya) - whose; संस्तव (saṃstava) - praise; वक्ता (vaktā) - speaker; त्वम् (tvam) - you; बन्दिवत् (bandivat) - like a bard; सतत (satata) - always; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - arisen; raised;]
(May this terrible power of Keśava, which is for our enemies, be; of which you, like a bard, always arisen, are the speaker of praise.)
May this formidable power of Keśava, which is directed against our enemies, be present; you, like a bard, are always ready to sing his praises. (2-41-6)
संस्तवाय मनो भीष्म परेषां रमते सदा। यदि संस्तौषि राज्ञस्त्वमिमं हित्वा जनार्दनम् ॥२-४१-७॥
saṃstavāya mano bhīṣma pareṣāṃ ramate sadā। yadi saṃstauṣi rājñastvamimaṃ hitvā janārdanam ॥2-41-7॥
[संस्तवाय (saṃstavāya) - for praise; मनो (mano) - mind; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; परेषां (pareṣāṃ) - of others; रमते (ramate) - delights; सदा (sadā) - always; यदि (yadi) - if; संस्तौषि (saṃstauṣi) - you praise; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - the king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इमं (imaṃ) - this; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana (Krishna);]
(For praise, O Bhishma, the mind of others always delights. If you praise the king, having abandoned this Janardana.)
O Bhishma, the minds of others are always inclined towards praise. If you praise the king, abandoning this Janardana (Krishna), (2-41-7)
दरदं स्तुहि बाह्लीकमिमं पार्थिवसत्तमम्। जायमानेन येनेयमभवद्दारिता मही ॥२-४१-८॥
daradaṃ stuhi bāhlīkam imaṃ pārthivasattamam। jāyamānena yena iyam abhavat dāritā mahī ॥2-41-8॥
[दरदं (daradaṃ) - the Darada; (a people/kingdom in the northwest); स्तुहि (stuhi) - praise; (imperative of √stu, to praise); बाह्लीकम् (bāhlīkam) - the Bahlika; (a people/kingdom in the northwest); इमं (imaṃ) - this; (accusative singular masculine); पार्थिवसत्तमम् (pārthivasattamam) - the best among kings; (superlative of pārthiva, king); जायमानेन (jāyamānena) - by being born; (instrumental singular of jāyamāna, being born); येन (yena) - by whom; (instrumental singular of yaḥ); इयम् (iyam) - this; (nominative singular feminine); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; (3rd person singular past of √bhū, to be); दारिता (dāritā) - torn; (past participle of √dṛ, to split/tear); मही (mahī) - the earth; (nominative singular feminine);]
(Praise the Darada, the Bahlika, this best among kings; by whose birth this earth became torn.)
Praise the Darada, the Bahlika, this foremost of kings, by whose birth the earth was split. (2-41-8)
वङ्गाङ्गविषयाध्यक्षं सहस्राक्षसमं बले। स्तुहि कर्णमिमं भीष्म महाचापविकर्षणम् ॥२-४१-९॥
vaṅgāṅgaviṣayādhyakṣaṃ sahasrākṣasamaṃ bale। stuhi karṇamimaṃ bhīṣma mahācāpavikarṣaṇam ॥2-41-9॥
[वङ्ग (vaṅga) - Vanga; (a region); अङ्ग (aṅga) - Anga; (a region); विषयाध्यक्षं (viṣayādhyakṣam) - superintendent of the territory; सहस्राक्षसमं (sahasrākṣasamam) - equal to Indra (thousand-eyed) ; बले (bale) - in strength; स्तुहि (stuhi) - praise; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; इमम् (imam) - this; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; महाचापविकर्षणम् (mahācāpavikarṣaṇam) - great bow-drawer;]
(Vanga, Anga, superintendent of the territory, equal to Indra in strength; praise this Karna, O Bhishma, great bow-drawer.)
O Bhishma, praise this Karna, the superintendent of the territories of Vanga and Anga, who is equal to Indra in strength and a mighty wielder of the great bow. (2-41-9)
द्रोणं द्रौणिं च साधु त्वं पितापुत्रौ महारथौ। स्तुहि स्तुत्याविमौ भीष्म सततं द्विजसत्तमौ ॥२-४१-१०॥
droṇaṃ drauṇiṃ ca sādhu tvaṃ pitāputrau mahārathau। stuhi stutyāvimau bhīṣma satataṃ dvijasattamau ॥2-41-10॥
[द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; (name of a warrior); द्रौणिम् (drauṇim) - Drauṇi; (son of Droṇa, Aśvatthāman); च (ca) - and; साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पितापुत्रौ (pitāputrau) - father and son; महारथौ (mahārathau) - great chariot-warriors; स्तुहि (stuhi) - praise; स्तुत्यौ (stutyau) - worthy of praise; (dual); इमौ (imau) - these two; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; (name of a warrior); सततम् (satatam) - always; द्विजसत्तमौ (dvijasattamau) - the best among the twice-born; (Brahmins, dual);]
(Droṇa, Drauṇi and well you, the father and son, great chariot-warriors; praise these two worthy of praise, Bhīṣma, always the best among the twice-born. (2-41-10))
Droṇa and Drauṇi, the great chariot-warrior father and son, you should properly praise; always praise these two, Bhīṣma, the best among the twice-born. (2-41-10)
ययोरन्यतरो भीष्म सङ्क्रुद्धः सचराचराम्। इमां वसुमतीं कुर्यादशेषामिति मे मतिः ॥२-४१-११॥
yayor anyataro bhīṣma saṅkruddhaḥ sacarācarām। imāṃ vasumatīṃ kuryād aśeṣām iti me matiḥ ॥2-41-11॥
[ययोः (yayoh) - of which two; अन्यतरः (anyataraḥ) - either one; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhīṣma; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - enraged; सचराचराम् (sacarācarām) - with all moving and unmoving beings; इमाम् (imām) - this; वसुमतीम् (vasumatīm) - earth; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - might make; अशेषाम् (aśeṣām) - entire; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(Of which two, either one, O Bhīṣma, enraged, with all moving and unmoving beings, this earth might make entire—thus is my thought.)
O Bhīṣma, my thought is that of the two, whichever one becomes enraged could make this entire earth, with all its moving and unmoving beings, his own. (2-41-11)
द्रोणस्य हि समं युद्धे न पश्यामि नराधिपम्। अश्वत्थाम्नस्तथा भीष्म न चैतौ स्तोतुमिच्छसि ॥२-४१-१२॥
droṇasya hi samaṃ yuddhe na paśyāmi narādhipam। aśvatthāmnas tathā bhīṣma na caitau stotum icchasi ॥2-41-12॥
[द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; समं (samaṃ) - equal; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - king of men; अश्वत्थाम्नः (aśvatthāmnaḥ) - of Aśvatthāman; तथा (tathā) - also; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतौ (etau) - these two; स्तोतुम् (stotum) - to praise; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(Of Droṇa indeed equal in battle not I see king of men; of Aśvatthāman also Bhīṣma not and these two to praise you wish.)
I do not see any king equal to Droṇa in battle; nor do you wish to praise either Aśvatthāman or Bhīṣma. (2-41-12)
शल्यादीनपि कस्मात्त्वं न स्तौषि वसुधाधिपान्। स्तवाय यदि ते बुद्धिर्वर्तते भीष्म सर्वदा ॥२-४१-१३॥
śalyādīn api kasmāt tvaṃ na stauṣi vasudhādhipān। stavāya yadi te buddhir vartate bhīṣma sarvadā ॥2-41-13॥
[शल्यादीन् (śalyādīn) - Shalya and others; अपि (api) - also; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; स्तौषि (stauṣi) - praise; वसुधाधिपान् (vasudhādhipān) - lords of the earth; स्तवाय (stavāya) - for praising; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intention; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always;]
(Shalya and others also why you not praise lords of the earth for praising if your intention exists Bhishma always.)
Bhishma, if you always have the intention to praise, why do you not praise Shalya and the other lords of the earth? (2-41-13)
किं हि शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद्वृद्धानां त्वया नृप। पुरा कथयतां नूनं न श्रुतं धर्मवादिनाम् ॥२-४१-१४॥
kiṁ hi śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ yadvṛddhānāṁ tvayā nṛpa। purā kathayatāṁ nūnaṁ na śrutaṁ dharmavādinām ॥2-41-14॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; यत् (yat) - which; वृद्धानां (vṛddhānāṁ) - of the elders; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कथयतां (kathayatām) - of those speaking; नूनं (nūnaṁ) - certainly; न (na) - not; श्रुतं (śrutaṁ) - heard; धर्मवादिनाम् (dharmavādinām) - of those speaking about dharma;]
(What indeed is possible by me to do, which of the elders by you, O king, formerly of those speaking, certainly not heard of those speaking about dharma.)
O king, what could I possibly do that you, among the elders, have not already heard from those who speak of dharma in the past? (2-41-14)
आत्मनिन्दात्मपूजा च परनिन्दा परस्तवः। अनाचरितमार्याणां वृत्तमेतच्चतुर्विधम् ॥२-४१-१५॥
ātmanindātmapūjā ca paranindā parastavaḥ। anācaritamāryāṇāṃ vṛttametaccaturvidham ॥2-41-15॥
[आत्म-निन्दा (ātma-nindā) - self-blame; आत्म-पूजा (ātma-pūjā) - self-praise; च (ca) - and; पर-निन्दा (para-nindā) - blaming others; पर-स्तवः (para-stavaḥ) - praising others; अनाचरित (anācarita) - not practiced; आर्याणां (āryāṇām) - by the noble ones; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; एतत् (etat) - this; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - fourfold; ॥२-४१-१५॥ (॥2-41-15॥) -;]
(Self-blame, self-praise, blaming others, praising others—this fourfold conduct is not practiced by the noble ones. (2-41-15))
Self-blame, self-praise, blaming others, and praising others—these four types of conduct are not followed by the noble. (2-41-15)
यदस्तव्यमिमं शश्वन्मोहात्संस्तौषि भक्तितः। केशवं तच्च ते भीष्म न कश्चिदनुमन्यते ॥२-४१-१६॥
yad astavyam imaṃ śaśvan mohāt saṃstauṣi bhaktitaḥ। keśavaṃ tac ca te bhīṣma na kaścid anumanyate ॥2-41-16॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अस्तव्यम् (astavyam) - should be praised; इमम् (imam) - this; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; संस्तौषि (saṃstauṣi) - you praise; भक्तितः (bhaktitaḥ) - with devotion; केशवम् (keśavam) - Keśava; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - by you; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अनुमन्यते (anumanyate) - approves;]
(Which should be praised, this always, out of delusion, you praise with devotion Keśava; that and by you, Bhīṣma, not anyone approves.)
Whatever you are always praising here, out of delusion and with devotion, Keśava—Bhīṣma, no one approves of that (2-41-16).
कथं भोजस्य पुरुषे वर्गपाले दुरात्मनि। समावेशयसे सर्वं जगत्केवलकाम्यया ॥२-४१-१७॥
kathaṁ bhojasya puruṣe vargapāle durātmani। samāveśayase sarvaṁ jagat kevalakāmyayā ॥2-41-17॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; भोजस्य (bhojasya) - of Bhoja; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in the man; वर्गपाले (vargapāle) - in the protector of the group; दुरात्मनि (durātmani) - in the wicked-minded; समावेशयसे (samāveśayase) - you cause to enter; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; जगत् (jagat) - the world; केवलकाम्यया (kevalakāmyayā) - by mere desire;]
(How (do you) cause all the world to enter into the man of Bhoja, the protector of the group, who is wicked-minded, by mere desire?)
How do you, by mere desire, entrust the entire world to Bhoja's man, the group-protector, who is wicked-minded? (2-41-17)
अथ वैषा न ते भक्तिः पकृतिं याति भारत। मयैव कथितं पूर्वं भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्यथा ॥२-४१-१८॥
atha vaiṣā na te bhaktiḥ prakṛtiṃ yāti bhārata। mayā eva kathitaṃ pūrvaṃ bhūliṅgaśakuniryathā ॥2-41-18॥
[अथ (atha) - now; वै (vai) - indeed; एषा (eṣā) - this; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - original nature; याति (yāti) - goes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मया (mayā) - by me; एव (eva) - indeed; कथितम् (kathitam) - has been told; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; भूलिङ्गशकुनिः (bhūliṅgaśakuniḥ) - the earth-marked bird; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Now indeed, this devotion of yours does not go to its original nature, O Bhārata. By me indeed it has been told before, just as the earth-marked bird.)
Now, O Bhārata, this devotion of yours does not reach its true nature. I have already explained this before, just as with the earth-marked bird. (2-41-18)
भूलिङ्गशकुनिर्नाम पार्श्वे हिमवतः परे। भीष्म तस्याः सदा वाचः श्रूयन्तेऽर्थविगर्हिताः ॥२-४१-१९॥
bhūliṅgaśakunirnāma pārśve himavataḥ pare। bhīṣma tasyāḥ sadā vācaḥ śrūyante'rthavigarhitāḥ ॥2-41-19॥
[भू (bhū) - earth; लिङ्ग (liṅga) - mark; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - bird; नाम (nāma) - named; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - at the side; हिमवतः (himavataḥ) - of Himavat; परे (pare) - on the other side; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; सदा (sadā) - always; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; श्रूयन्ते (śrūyante) - are heard; अर्थविगर्हिताः (arthavigarhitāḥ) - condemned for meaning;]
(A bird named Bhūliṅga, on the other side at the foot of Himavat, O Bhishma, her words always are heard, condemned for their meaning.)
O Bhishma, on the far side of the Himalayas, there is a bird named Bhūliṅga; her words are always heard, but they are considered blameworthy in meaning. (2-41-19)
मा साहसमितीदं सा सततं वाशते किल। साहसं चात्मनातीव चरन्ती नावबुध्यते ॥२-४१-२०॥
mā sāhasamitīdaṃ sā satataṃ vāśate kila। sāhasaṃ cātmanātīva carantī nāvabudhyate ॥2-41-20॥
[मा (mā) - do not; साहसम् (sāhasam) - rashness; इति (iti) - thus; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सा (sā) - she; सततम् (satatam) - always; वाशते (vāśate) - speaks; किल (kila) - indeed; साहसम् (sāhasam) - rashness; च (ca) - and; आत्मन (ātman) - by herself; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; चरन्ती (carantī) - acting; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यते (avabudhyate) - realizes;]
(Do not (say) 'this is rashness', she always indeed speaks thus. And, acting exceedingly rashly by herself, she does not realize (it).)
Do not say, 'this is rashness,' for she always speaks thus. Yet, acting exceedingly rashly on her own, she does not realize it. (2-41-20)
सा हि मांसार्गलं भीष्म मुखात्सिंहस्य खादतः। दन्तान्तरविलग्नं यत्तदादत्तेऽल्पचेतना ॥२-४१-२१॥
sā hi māṃsārgalaṃ bhīṣma mukhātsiṃhasya khādataḥ। dantāntaravilagnaṃ yattadādatte'lpacetanā ॥2-41-21॥
[सा (sā) - she; हि (hi) - indeed; मांसार्गलं (māṃsārgalaṃ) - piece of flesh; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - terrible; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from the mouth; सिंहस्य (siṃhasya) - of the lion; खादतः (khādataḥ) - while eating; दन्तान्तरविलग्नं (dantāntaravilagnaṃ) - stuck between the teeth; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; आदत्ते (ādatte) - takes; अल्पचेतना (alpacetanā) - of little intelligence;]
(She indeed, the piece of flesh, terrible, from the mouth of the lion while eating, which is stuck between the teeth, that, takes, of little intelligence.)
She, of little intelligence, takes that piece of flesh which is stuck between the teeth of the terrible lion while he is eating. (2-41-21)
इच्छतः सा हि सिंहस्य भीष्म जीवत्यसंशयम्। तद्वत्त्वमप्यधर्मज्ञ सदा वाचः प्रभाषसे ॥२-४१-२२॥
icchataḥ sā hi siṃhasya bhīṣma jīvatyasaṃśayam। tadvattvamapyadharmajña sadā vācaḥ prabhāṣase ॥2-41-22॥
[इच्छतः (icchataḥ) - of the desiring; सा (sā) - she; हि (hi) - indeed; सिंहस्य (siṃhasya) - of the lion; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that manner; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अधर्मज्ञ (adharmajña) - knower of unrighteousness; सदा (sadā) - always; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; प्रभाषसे (prabhāṣase) - you speak;]
(Of the desiring, she indeed, of the lion, O Bhishma, lives without doubt. In that manner, you also, knower of unrighteousness, always words you speak.)
O Bhishma, just as the lioness lives as long as the lion desires, without doubt, so too, you, knower of unrighteousness, always speak such words. (2-41-22)
इच्छतां पार्थिवेन्द्राणां भीष्म जीवस्यसंशयम्। लोकविद्विष्टकर्मा हि नान्योऽस्ति भवता समः ॥२-४१-२३॥
icchatāṃ pārthivendrāṇāṃ bhīṣma jīvasya saṃśayam। lokavidviṣṭakarmā hi nānyo'sti bhavatā samaḥ ॥2-41-23॥
[इच्छताम् (icchatām) - of those who desire; पार्थिवेन्द्राणाम् (pārthivendrāṇām) - of the kings; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; जीवस्य (jīvasya) - of the living; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; लोकविद्विष्टकर्मा (loka-vidviṣṭa-karmā) - one whose actions are hated by the world; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अस्ति (asti) - exists; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; समः (samaḥ) - equal;]
(Of those who desire, O Bhishma, among the kings, there is doubt regarding the living; indeed, one whose actions are hated by the world, there is not another equal to you.)
O Bhishma, among all the kings who desire, there is doubt about the living; truly, there is no one whose actions are as hated by the world as yours, and no one equal to you. (2-41-23)

tataś cedipateḥ śrutvā bhīṣmaḥ sa kaṭukaṃ vacaḥ। uvācedaṃ vaco rājaṃś cedirājasya śṛṇvataḥ ॥2-41-24॥

(Then, having heard the harsh words of the king of the Cedis, Bhishma, he said these words, O king, while the king of the Cedis was listening.)
Then, upon hearing the harsh words of the king of the Cedis, Bhishma spoke these words, O king, as the king of the Cedis listened. (2-41-24)
इच्छतां किल नामाहं जीवाम्येषां महीक्षिताम्। योऽहं न गणयाम्येतांस्तृणानीव नराधिपान् ॥२-४१-२५॥
icchatāṃ kila nāmāhaṃ jīvāmyeṣāṃ mahīkṣitām। yo'haṃ na gaṇayāmyetāṃstṛṇānīva narādhipān ॥2-41-25॥
[इच्छताम् (icchatām) - of those desiring; किल (kila) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - surely; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवामि (jīvāmi) - live; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; महीक्षिताम् (mahīkṣitām) - of kings; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; गणयामि (gaṇayāmi) - count; एतान् (etān) - these; तृणानि (tṛṇāni) - as grass; इव (iva) - like; नराधिपान् (narādhipān) - kings;]
(Of those desiring, indeed, surely I live of these kings; who I do not count these kings like grass.)
I live, it is said, only for those who desire me among these kings; for I am one who regards these rulers as no more than blades of grass. (2-41-25)
एवमुक्ते तु भीष्मेण ततः सञ्चुक्रुधुर्नृपाः। केचिज्जहृषिरे तत्र केचिद्भीष्मं जगर्हिरे ॥२-४१-२६॥
evam-ukte tu bhīṣmeṇa tataḥ sañcukrudhur nṛpāḥ। kecij jahṛṣire tatra kecid bhīṣmaṃ jagarhire ॥2-41-26॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्चुक्रुधुः (sañcukrudhuḥ) - became angry; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; केचित् (kecit) - some; जहृषिरे (jahṛṣire) - became delighted; तत्र (tatra) - there; केचित् (kecit) - some; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; जगर्हिरे (jagarhire) - censured;]
(Thus, when it was spoken by Bhishma, then the kings became angry; some there became delighted, some censured Bhishma.)
When Bhishma had spoken thus, then the kings became angry; some there rejoiced, while others censured Bhishma. (2-41-26)
केचिदूचुर्महेष्वासाः श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य तद्वचः। पापोऽवलिप्तो वृद्धश्च नायं भीष्मोऽर्हति क्षमाम् ॥२-४१-२७॥
kecid ūcur maheṣv-āsāḥ śrutvā bhīṣmasya tad vacaḥ। pāpo'valipto vṛddhaś ca nāyaṃ bhīṣmo'rhati kṣamām ॥2-41-27॥
[केचित् (kecit) - some; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महेष्वासाः (maheṣv-āsāḥ) - great archers; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked; अवलिप्तः (avaliptaḥ) - arrogant; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; क्षमाम् (kṣamām) - forgiveness;]
(Some great archers said, having heard that speech of Bhīṣma: "Wicked, arrogant, and old, this Bhīṣma does not deserve forgiveness.")
Some of the great archers, upon hearing Bhīṣma's words, said: "This Bhīṣma, being wicked, arrogant, and old, does not deserve forgiveness." (2-41-27)
हन्यतां दुर्मतिर्भीष्मः पशुवत्साध्वयं नृपैः। सर्वैः समेत्य संरब्धैर्दह्यतां वा कटाग्निना ॥२-४१-२८॥
hanyatāṃ durmatirbhīṣmaḥ paśuvatsādhvayaṃ nṛpaiḥ। sarvaiḥ sametya saṃrabdhairdahyatāṃ vā kaṭāgninā ॥2-41-28॥
[हन्यताम् (hanyatām) - let him be killed; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - evil-minded one; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; पशुवत् (paśuvat) - like an animal; साध्वयम् (sādhvayam) - properly; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by the kings; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; संरब्धैः (saṃrabdhaiḥ) - enraged; दह्यताम् (dahyatām) - let him be burned; वा (vā) - or; कटाग्निना (kaṭāgninā) - with fire of funeral pyre;]
(Let the evil-minded Bhishma be killed like an animal, properly by the kings; or let him be burned by all, having assembled, enraged, with the fire of the funeral pyre.)
Let the evil-minded Bhishma be slain like a beast, properly, by the assembled and enraged kings; or let him be burned by all with the fire of the funeral pyre. (2-41-28)
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा ततः कुरुपितामहः। उवाच मतिमान्भीष्मस्तानेव वसुधाधिपान् ॥२-४१-२९॥

(Thus, having heard their speech, then the grandsire of the Kurus, the wise Bhishma, said to those very kings of the earth.)
Having listened to their words, the wise Bhishma, grandsire of the Kurus, then addressed those very kings of the earth. (2-41-29)
उक्तस्योक्तस्य नेहान्तमहं समुपलक्षये। यत्तु वक्ष्यामि तत्सर्वं शृणुध्वं वसुधाधिपाः ॥२-४१-३०॥
uktasyoktāsya nehāntamahaṃ samupalakṣaye। yattu vakṣyāmi tatsarvaṃ śṛṇudhvaṃ vasudhādhipāḥ ॥2-41-30॥
[उक्तस्य (uktasya) - of what has been said; उक्तस्य (uktāsya) - of what has been said; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; अन्तम् (antam) - end; अहम् (aham) - I; समुपलक्षये (samupalakṣaye) - perceive; यत् (yat) - what; तु (tu) - but; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; शृणुध्वम् (śṛṇudhvam) - hear; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - O kings of the earth;]
(Of what has been said, of what has been said, I do not perceive an end here. But what I shall say, all of that, hear, O kings of the earth.)
I do not see an end here to what has already been said. But listen, O kings of the earth, to all that I am about to say. (2-41-30)
पशुवद्घातनं वा मे दहनं वा कटाग्निना। क्रियतां मूर्ध्नि वो न्यस्तं मयेदं सकलं पदम् ॥२-४१-३१॥
paśuvad-ghātanaṃ vā me dahanaṃ vā kaṭāgninā। kriyatāṃ mūrdhni vo nyastaṃ mayedaṃ sakalaṃ padam ॥2-41-31॥
[पशुवत् (paśuvat) - like an animal; घातनम् (ghātanam) - killing; वा (vā) - or; मे (me) - to me; दहनम् (dahanam) - burning; वा (vā) - or; कट-अग्निना (kaṭāgninā) - by funeral fire; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; वः (vaḥ) - by you; न्यस्तम् (nyastam) - placed; मया (mayā) - by me; इदम् (idam) - this; सकलम् (sakalam) - entire; पदम् (padam) - step;]
(Like an animal, killing or to me burning or by funeral fire, let it be done; on the head by you placed by me this entire step.)
Let me be killed like an animal or burned by the funeral fire; do as you wish. I have placed my entire step (self) on your head. (2-41-31)
एष तिष्ठति गोविन्दः पूजितोऽस्माभिरच्युतः। यस्य वस्त्वरते बुद्धिर्मरणाय स माधवम् ॥२-४१-३२॥
eṣa tiṣṭhati govindaḥ pūjito'smābhiracyutaḥ। yasya vastvarate buddhirmaraṇāya sa mādhavam ॥2-41-32॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - worshipped; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta; यस्य (yasya) - whose; वस् (vas) - mind; त्वरते (tvarate) - hastens; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; मरणाय (maraṇāya) - for death; सः (saḥ) - he; माधवम् (mādhavam) - to Mādhava;]
(This Govinda, Acyuta, worshipped by us, stands. He whose mind and intellect hasten towards death, that one (should) turn to Mādhava.)
Here stands Govinda, Acyuta, worshipped by us. He whose mind and intellect rush towards death should turn to Mādhava. (2-41-32)
कृष्णमाह्वयतामद्य युद्धे शार्ङ्गगदाधरम्। यावदस्यैव देवस्य देहं विशतु पातितः ॥२-४१-३३॥
kṛṣṇamāhvayatāmadya yuddhe śārṅgagadādharam। yāvad asyaiva devasya dehaṃ viśatu pātitaḥ ॥2-41-33॥
[कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; (the dark one; name of the deity); आह्वयताम् (āhvayatām) - let (him) be summoned; (from ā-hū, to call); अद्य (adya) - today; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; शार्ङ्गगदाधरम् (śārṅga-gadā-dharam) - the wielder of Śārṅga (bow) and mace; यावत् (yāvat) - until; अस्यैव (asyaiva) - of this very (one); देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; देहम् (deham) - body; विशतु (viśatu) - may enter; (from viś, to enter); पातितः (pātitaḥ) - fallen; (caused to fall, slain);]
(Let Kṛṣṇa, the wielder of Śārṅga and mace, be summoned today in battle, until the body of this very god, fallen, may enter.)
Summon Kṛṣṇa, the wielder of the Śārṅga bow and mace, today to the battle, until the body of this very god, when slain, may enter (the earth). (2-41-33)
