ततः श्रुत्वैव भीष्मस्य चेदिराडुरुविक्रमः। युयुत्सुर्वासुदेवेन वासुदेवमुवाच ह ॥२-४२-१॥
tataḥ śrutvaiva bhīṣmasya cedirāḍuruvikramaḥ। yuyutsur vāsudevena vāsudevam uvāca ha ॥2-42-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; चेदिराट् (cedirāṭ) - the king of the Cedis; उरु (uru) - great; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - valour; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - desiring to fight; वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vāsudeva; वासुदेवम् (vāsudevam) - to Vāsudeva; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, having indeed heard of Bhīṣma, the king of the Cedis, of great valour, desiring to fight, by Vāsudeva, to Vāsudeva, said indeed.)
Then, having heard Bhīṣma, the mighty king of the Cedis, eager for battle, spoke to Vāsudeva in the presence of Vāsudeva. (2-42-1)
आह्वये त्वां रणं गच्छ मया सार्धं जनार्दन। यावदद्य निहन्मि त्वां सहितं सर्वपाण्डवैः ॥२-४२-२॥
āhvaye tvāṃ raṇaṃ gaccha mayā sārdhaṃ janārdana। yāvadadya nihanmi tvāṃ sahitaṃ sarva-pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥2-42-2॥
[आह्वये (āhvaye) - I call; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; रणं (raṇam) - battle; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; यावत् (yāvat) - until; अद्य (adya) - today; निहन्मि (nihanmi) - I slay; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सहितं (sahitam) - together with; सर्वपाण्डवैः (sarva-pāṇḍavaiḥ) - all the Pāṇḍavas;]
(I call you, go to battle with me together, O Janardana. Until today I slay you together with all the Pāṇḍavas.)
I challenge you, O Janardana, go to battle with me. Today, I shall slay you along with all the Pāṇḍavas. (2-42-2)
सह त्वया हि मे वध्याः पाण्डवाः कृष्ण सर्वथा। नृपतीन्समतिक्रम्य यैरराजा त्वमर्चितः ॥२-४२-३॥
saha tvayā hi me vadhyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kṛṣṇa sarvathā। nṛpatīn samatikramya yair rājā tvam arcitaḥ ॥2-42-3॥
[सह (saha) - together with; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - by me; वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - to be slain; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; नृपतीन् (nṛpatīn) - kings; समतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having surpassed; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - have been honored;]
(Together with you indeed by me to be slain are the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣṇa, in every way. Having surpassed the kings, by whom the king, you, have been honored.)
Kṛṣṇa, the Pāṇḍavas are to be slain by me together with you, in every way. You, whom the king has honored after surpassing the other kings. (2-42-3)
ये त्वां दासमराजानं बाल्यादर्चन्ति दुर्मतिम्। अनर्हमर्हवत्कृष्ण वध्यास्त इति मे मतिः ॥ इत्युक्त्वा राजशार्दूलस्तस्थौ गर्जन्नमर्षणः ॥२-४२-४॥
ye tvāṃ dāsamarājānaṃ bālyādarcenti durmatim। anarhamarhavatkṛṣṇa vadhyāsta iti me matiḥ ॥ ityuktvā rājaśārdūlastasthau garjannamarṣaṇaḥ ॥2-42-4॥
[ये (ye) - who; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; दासम् (dāsam) - servant; अराजानम् (arājānam) - not a king; बाल्यात् (bālyāt) - from childhood; अर्चन्ति (arcenti) - worship; दुर्मतिम् (durmatim) - evil-minded; अनर्हम् (anarham) - unworthy; अर्हवत् (arhavat) - as worthy; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - deserving to be killed; ते (te) - they; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; इत्युक्त्वा (ityuktvā) - having thus spoken; राजशार्दूलः (rājaśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among kings; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गर्जन् (garjan) - roaring; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - intolerant;]
(Who worship you, an evil-minded servant and not a king, from childhood, those unworthy ones as if worthy, O Kṛṣṇa, are fit to be killed—this is my opinion. Having thus spoken, the tiger among kings stood, roaring, intolerant.)
Those who, from childhood, worship you, O Kṛṣṇa, as if you were a worthy king though you are an evil-minded servant and not a king, are fit to be killed—this is my opinion. Having said this, the tiger among kings stood, roaring in anger. (2-42-4)
एवमुक्ते ततः कृष्णो मृदुपूर्वमिदं वचः। उवाच पार्थिवान्सर्वांस्तत्समक्षं च पाण्डवान् ॥२-४२-५॥
evam-ukte tataḥ kṛṣṇo mṛdu-pūrvam idaṃ vacaḥ। uvāca pārthivān sarvān tat-samakṣaṃ ca pāṇḍavān ॥2-42-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; मृदु (mṛdu) - gentle; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - preceded by; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तत् (tat) - that; समक्षम् (samakṣam) - in the presence; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pāṇḍavas;]
(Thus, when it was said, then Kṛṣṇa, with gentleness, this speech spoke to all the kings and the Pāṇḍavas in their presence.)
When this was said, Kṛṣṇa then gently spoke these words to all the kings and the Pāṇḍavas in their presence. (2-42-5)
एष नः शत्रुरत्यन्तं पार्थिवाः सात्वतीसुतः। सात्वतानां नृशंसात्मा न हितोऽनपकारिणाम् ॥२-४२-६॥
eṣa naḥ śatrur atyantaṃ pārthivāḥ sātvatisutaḥ। sātvatānāṃ nṛśaṃsātmā na hito'napakāriṇām ॥2-42-6॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - extremely; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - O kings; सात्वतीसुतः (sātvatisutaḥ) - son of Satyavatī; सात्वतानाम् (sātvatānām) - of the Sātvatas; नृशंसात्मा (nṛśaṃsātmā) - cruel-minded; न (na) - not; हितः (hitaḥ) - beneficial; अनपकारिणाम् (anapakāriṇām) - to those who do no harm;]
(This is our enemy, O kings, the son of Satyavatī, extremely (so); of the Sātvatas, cruel-minded, not beneficial to those who do no harm.)
This son of Satyavatī is our greatest enemy, O kings; he is cruel-minded towards the Sātvatas and is not beneficial to those who have done no harm. (2-42-6)
प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरं यातानस्माञ्ज्ञात्वा नृशंसकृत्। अदहद्द्वारकामेष स्वस्रीयः सन्नराधिपाः ॥२-४२-७॥
prāg-jyotiṣa-puraṃ yātān asmān jñātvā nṛśaṃsa-kṛt। adahad dvārakām eṣa svasrīyaḥ san narādhipaḥ ॥2-42-7॥
[प्राक् (prāk) - before; ज्योतिषपुरम् (jyotiṣapuram) - city of Jyotisha; यातान् (yātān) - gone; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; नृशंसकृत् (nṛśaṃsa-kṛt) - wicked deed; अदहत् (adahat) - burned; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - Dvaraka; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; स्वस्रीयः (svasrīyaḥ) - sister's son; सन् (san) - being; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king;]
(Having known that we had gone to the city of Jyotisha before, this king, being the sister's son, performed a wicked deed and burned Dvaraka.)
Knowing that we had gone to the city of Jyotisha earlier, this king, our sister's son, committed a wicked act and set Dvaraka on fire. (2-42-7)
क्रीडतो भोजराजन्यानेष रैवतके गिरौ। हत्वा बद्ध्वा च तान्सर्वानुपायात्स्वपुरं पुरा ॥२-४२-८॥
krīḍato bhojarājanyāneṣa raivatake girau। hatvā baddhvā ca tānsarvānupāyātsvapuraṃ purā ॥2-42-8॥
[क्रीडतः (krīḍataḥ) - playing; भोजराजन्यान् (bhojarājanyān) - the Bhoja princes; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; रैवतके (raivatake) - on Raivataka; गिरौ (girau) - mountain; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; उपायात् (upāyāt) - by means; स्वपुरं (svapuraṃ) - to his own city; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Playing, the Bhoja princes, this (person) on Raivataka mountain, having slain and having bound all of them, by means, to his own city, formerly.)
Long ago, while the Bhoja princes were playing on Mount Raivataka, this person killed and bound all of them and, by some means, brought them to his own city. (2-42-8)
अश्वमेधे हयं मेध्यमुत्सृष्टं रक्षिभिर्वृतम्। पितुर्मे यज्ञविघ्नार्थमहरत्पापनिश्चयः ॥२-४२-९॥
aśvamedhe hayaṃ medhyam utsṛṣṭaṃ rakṣibhir vṛtam। pitur me yajñavighnārtham aharat pāpaniścayaḥ ॥2-42-9॥
[अश्वमेधे (aśvamedhe) - in the horse-sacrifice; हयम् (hayam) - horse; मेध्यम् (medhyam) - sacrificial (pure); उत्सृष्टम् (utsṛṣṭam) - let loose; रक्षिभिः (rakṣibhiḥ) - by the guards; वृतम् (vṛtam) - surrounded; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (my) father; मे (me) - my; यज्ञविघ्नार्थम् (yajñavighnārtham) - for the purpose of obstructing the sacrifice; अहरत् (aharat) - took away; पापनिश्चयः (pāpaniścayaḥ) - one intent on evil; ॥२-४२-९॥ (॥2-42-9॥) -;]
(In the horse-sacrifice, the sacrificial horse, let loose, surrounded by guards, for the purpose of obstructing my father's sacrifice, was taken away by one intent on evil.)
During the horse-sacrifice, the sacrificial horse, which had been let loose and was guarded, was taken away by an evil-minded person to obstruct my father's sacrifice. (2-42-9)
सौवीरान्प्रतिपत्तौ च बभ्रोरेष यशस्विनः। भार्यामभ्यहरन्मोहादकामां तामितो गताम् ॥२-४२-१०॥
sauvīrānpratipattau ca babhroreṣa yaśasvinaḥ। bhāryāmabhyaharanmohādkāmāṃ tāmito gatām ॥2-42-10॥
[सौवीरान् (sauvīrān) - the Sauvīras; (a people/kingdom) प्रतिपत्तौ (pratipattau) - in the acquisition; (locative singular of pratipatti) च (ca) - and; बभ्रोः (babhror) - of Babhrū; (genitive singular) एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - glorious; (of the renowned one) भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; अभ्यहरन् (abhyaharan) - carried away; (took away, from abhi-√hṛ) मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; कामाम् (kāmām) - desiring; (object of desire) ताम् (tām) - her; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गताम् (gatām) - gone; (having gone);]
(And in the acquisition of the Sauvīras, this glorious Babhrū, from delusion, carried away the wife, desiring her, who had gone from here.)
During the conquest of the Sauvīras, this renowned Babhrū, overcome by delusion, carried away the wife he desired, who had departed from here. (2-42-10)
एष मायाप्रतिच्छन्नः करूषार्थे तपस्विनीम्। जहार भद्रां वैशालीं मातुलस्य नृशंसकृत् ॥२-४२-११॥
eṣa māyāpraticchannaḥ karūṣārthe tapasvinīm। jahāra bhadrāṃ vaiśālīṃ mātulasya nṛśaṃsakṛt ॥2-42-11॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; माया (māyā) - illusion; प्रतिच्छन्नः (praticchannaḥ) - covered; करूषार्थे (karūṣārthe) - for the sake of Karūṣa; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - the ascetic woman; जहार (jahāra) - abducted; भद्रां (bhadrāṃ) - auspicious; वैशालीं (vaiśālīṃ) - Vaiśālī; मातुलस्य (mātulasya) - of the maternal uncle; नृशंसकृत् (nṛśaṃsakṛt) - committer of cruelty;]
(This, covered by illusion, for the sake of Karūṣa, abducted the auspicious ascetic woman Vaiśālī, of the maternal uncle, the committer of cruelty.)
He, veiled by illusion, for the sake of Karūṣa, abducted the virtuous ascetic Vaiśālī, daughter of his maternal uncle, committing a cruel deed. (2-42-11)
पितृष्वसुः कृते दुःखं सुमहन्मर्षयाम्यहम्। दिष्ट्या त्विदं सर्वराज्ञां संनिधावद्य वर्तते ॥२-४२-१२॥
pitṛṣvasuḥ kṛte duḥkhaṃ sumahanmarṣayāmyaham। diṣṭyā tvidaṃ sarvarājñāṃ saṃnidhāvadya vartate ॥2-42-12॥
[पितृष्वसुः (pitṛṣvasuḥ) - father's sister; कृते (kṛte) - by the act; दुःखं (duḥkham) - suffering; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; मर्षयामि (marṣayāmi) - I endure; अहम् (aham) - I; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; त्व (tva) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वराज्ञाम् (sarvarājñām) - of all kings; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; अद्य (adya) - today; वर्तते (vartate) - exists;]
(The suffering caused by my father's sister I, indeed, greatly endure. By fortune, this today exists in the presence of all kings.)
I bear the great suffering caused by my father's sister. Fortunately, today this is happening in the presence of all the kings. (2-42-12)
पश्यन्ति हि भवन्तोऽद्य मय्यतीव व्यतिक्रमम्। कृतानि तु परोक्षं मे यानि तानि निबोधत ॥२-४२-१३॥
paśyanti hi bhavanto'dya mayyatīva vyatikramam। kṛtāni tu parokṣaṃ me yāni tāni nibodhata ॥2-42-13॥
[पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - they see; हि (hi) - indeed; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you (honorable ones); अद्य (adya) - today; मयि (mayi) - in me; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; व्यतिक्रमम् (vyatikramam) - transgression; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done; तु (tu) - but; परोक्षम् (parokṣam) - secretly; मे (me) - by me; यानि (yāni) - which; तानि (tāni) - those; निबोधत (nibodhata) - know; ॥२-४२-१३॥ ((2-42-13)) - (2-42-13);]
(Indeed, you (honorable ones) see today exceedingly in me a transgression; but know those acts which have been done secretly by me.)
Today, you all indeed see in me a great transgression; but know those acts which I have done in secret. (2-42-13)
इमं त्वस्य न शक्ष्यामि क्षन्तुमद्य व्यतिक्रमम्। अवलेपाद्वधार्हस्य समग्रे राजमण्डले ॥२-४२-१४॥
imaṃ tvasya na śakṣyāmi kṣantumadya vyatikramam। avalepād vadhārhasya samagre rājamaṇḍale ॥2-42-14॥
[इमम् (imam) - this (object); त्व (tva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I am able; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अद्य (adya) - today; व्यतिक्रमम् (vyatikramam) - transgression; अवलेपात् (avalepāt) - from arrogance; वधार्हस्य (vadhārhasya) - of one deserving death; समग्रे (samagre) - in the entire; राजमण्डले (rājamaṇḍale) - royal assembly;]
(This indeed of him not I am able to forgive today (his) transgression, from arrogance, of one deserving death, in the entire royal assembly.)
Today, I am unable to forgive this transgression, born of arrogance, of one deserving death, in the entire royal assembly. (2-42-14)
रुक्मिण्यामस्य मूढस्य प्रार्थनासीन्मुमूर्षतः। न च तां प्राप्तवान्मूढः शूद्रो वेदश्रुतिं यथा ॥२-४२-१५॥
rukmiṇyāmasya mūḍhasya prārthanāsīnmumūrṣataḥ। na ca tāṃ prāptavānmūḍhaḥ śūdro vedaśrutiṃ yathā ॥2-42-15॥

(In Rukmiṇī, of this deluded one, the request was (made) by the one wishing to die. And the deluded one did not obtain her, just as a śūdra (does not obtain) the hearing of the Veda.)
His request for Rukmiṇī, made in delusion and in the desire for death, was not fulfilled; the deluded one did not obtain her, just as a śūdra does not obtain the hearing of the Veda. (2-42-15)
एवमादि ततः सर्वे सहितास्ते नराधिपाः। वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा चेदिराजं व्यगर्हयन् ॥२-४२-१६॥
evamādi tataḥ sarve sahitāste narādhipāḥ। vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā cedirājaṃ vyagarhayan ॥2-42-16॥

(Thus beginning, then all those kings together, having heard Vasudeva's words, censured the king of Cedi.)
Hearing Vasudeva's words, all the assembled kings then censured the king of Cedi. (2-42-16)
ततस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शिशुपालः प्रतापवान्। जहास स्वनवद्धासं प्रहस्येदमुवाच ह ॥२-४२-१७॥
tatas tad-vacanaṃ śrutvā śiśupālaḥ pratāpavān। jahāsa svanavad dhāsaṃ prahasya idam uvāca ha ॥2-42-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शिशुपालः (śiśupālaḥ) - Śiśupāla; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; जहास (jahāsa) - laughed; स्वनवत् (svanavat) - with sound; धासम् (dhāsam) - laughter; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having laughed; इदम् (idam) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, having heard that speech, Śiśupāla, powerful, laughed with a sound of laughter, having laughed, indeed said this.)
Then, having heard those words, the powerful Śiśupāla laughed aloud, and after laughing, he said this. (2-42-17)
मत्पूर्वां रुक्मिणीं कृष्ण संसत्सु परिकीर्तयन्। विशेषतः पार्थिवेषु व्रीडां न कुरुषे कथम् ॥२-४२-१८॥
matpūrvāṃ rukmiṇīṃ kṛṣṇa saṃsatsu parikīrtayan। viśeṣataḥ pārthiveṣu vrīḍāṃ na kuruṣe katham ॥2-42-18॥
[मत्पूर्वाम् (matpūrvām) - before me; रुक्मिणीम् (rukmiṇīm) - Rukmini; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; संसत्सु (saṃsatsu) - in assemblies; परिकीर्तयन् (parikīrtayan) - praising; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; पार्थिवेषु (pārthiveṣu) - among kings; व्रीडाम् (vrīḍām) - shame; न (na) - not; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - do you feel; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(Before me, O Krishna, you praise Rukmini in assemblies, especially among kings; how do you not feel shame?)
O Krishna, you praise Rukmini before me in public gatherings, especially among kings; how is it that you do not feel any shame? (2-42-18)
मन्मानो हि कः सत्सु पुरुषः परिकीर्तयेत्। अन्यपूर्वां स्त्रियं जातु त्वदन्यो मधुसूदन ॥२-४२-१९॥
manyamāno hi kaḥ satsu puruṣaḥ parikīrtayet। anyapūrvāṃ striyaṃ jātu tvadanyo madhusūdana ॥2-42-19॥
[मन्मानो (manyamānaḥ) - thinking; considering; regarding; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; कः (kaḥ) - who; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good; among the virtuous; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; person; परिकीर्तयेत् (parikīrtayet) - would proclaim; would declare; अन्यपूर्वां (anyapūrvām) - not previously (by another); स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; जातु (jātu) - ever; at any time; त्वत् (tvat) - than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; another; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; O slayer of Madhu;]
(Thinking indeed, who among the good men would proclaim (about) a woman not previously (by another), ever, other than you, O Madhusudana?)
O Madhusudana, who among virtuous men would ever speak of another woman not previously (by another), except you?
क्षम वा यदि ते श्रद्धा मा वा कृष्ण मम क्षम। क्रुद्धाद्वापि प्रसन्नाद्वा किं मे त्वत्तो भविष्यति ॥२-४२-२०॥
kṣama vā yadi te śraddhā mā vā kṛṣṇa mama kṣama। kruddhād vā api prasannād vā kiṃ me tvatto bhaviṣyati ॥2-42-20॥
[क्षम (kṣama) - forgive; (from kṣam, to endure, to forgive;) वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; (from śrat + dhā, to place trust;) मा (mā) - not; वा (vā) - or; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; मम (mama) - my; क्षम (kṣama) - forgive; क्रुद्धात् (kruddhāt) - from the angry; (from krudh, to be angry;) वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; प्रसन्नात् (prasannāt) - from the pleased; (from pra + √sad, to be pleased;) वा (vā) - or; किं (kiṃ) - what; मे (me) - to me; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; (from √bhū, to be, to become;);]
(Forgive or if your faith not or, Kṛṣṇa, my forgive. From the angry or even from the pleased or, what to me from you will be?)
Whether you forgive or not, whether you have faith or not, O Kṛṣṇa, whether you are angry or pleased, what will come to me from you? (2-42-20)
तथा ब्रुवत एवास्य भगवान्मधुसूदनः। व्यपाहरच्छिरः क्रुद्धश्चक्रेणामित्रकर्षणः ॥ स पपात महाबाहुर्वज्राहत इवाचलः ॥२-४२-२१॥
tathā bruvata evāsya bhagavān madhusūdanaḥ। vyapāharacchiraḥ kruddhaś cakreṇāmitrakarṣaṇaḥ ॥ sa papāta mahābāhur vajrāhata ivācalaḥ ॥2-42-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; ब्रुवत (bruvata) - speaking; एव (eva) - just; अस्य (asya) - his; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana (slayer of Madhu); व्यपाहरत् (vyapāharat) - removed; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; चक्रेण (cakreṇa) - with the discus; अमित्रकर्षणः (amitrakarṣaṇaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; सः (saḥ) - he; पपात (papāta) - fell; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; वज्राहतः (vajrāhataḥ) - struck by a thunderbolt; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - mountain;]
(Thus, while he was just speaking, the Lord Madhusūdana, angry, removed his head with the discus, the destroyer of enemies. He, the mighty-armed, fell like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.)
As he was speaking thus, the Lord Madhusūdana, enraged, cut off his head with the discus, the destroyer of enemies. The mighty-armed one fell like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt. (2-42-21)
ततश्चेदिपतेर्देहात्तेजोऽग्र्यं ददृशुर्नृपाः। उत्पतन्तं महाराज गगनादिव भास्करम् ॥२-४२-२२॥
tataś cedipater dehāt tejo'gryaṃ dadṛśur nṛpāḥ। utpatantaṃ mahārāja gaganād iva bhāskaram ॥2-42-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; एदि-पतेः (edi-pateḥ) - of the king of the Cedis; देहात् (dehāt) - from the body; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - supreme; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - the kings; उत्पतन्तम् (utpatantam) - rising; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; इव (iva) - like; भास्करम् (bhāskaram) - the sun;]
(Then, O great king, the kings saw the supreme splendor of the king of the Cedis rising from his body, like the sun from the sky.)
Then, O great king, the kings saw the supreme brilliance of the king of the Cedis rise from his body, like the sun rising from the sky. (2-42-22)
ततः कमलपत्राक्षं कृष्णं लोकनमस्कृतम्। ववन्दे तत्तदा तेजो विवेश च नराधिप ॥२-४२-२३॥
tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ lokanamaskṛtam। vavande tattadā tejo viveśa ca narādhipa ॥2-42-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कमलपत्राक्षम् (kamalapatrākṣam) - lotus-petal-eyed; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; लोकनमस्कृतम् (lokanamaskṛtam) - honored by the worlds; ववन्दे (vavande) - bowed; तत्तदा (tattadā) - at that time; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king;]
(Then, the lotus-petal-eyed Kṛṣṇa, honored by the worlds, was bowed to; at that time, the splendor entered the king.)
Then, Kṛṣṇa, whose eyes are like lotus petals and who is honored by all the worlds, was bowed to; at that moment, the brilliance entered the king. (2-42-23)
तदद्भुतममन्यन्त दृष्ट्वा सर्वे महीक्षितः। यद्विवेश महाबाहुं तत्तेजः पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥२-४२-२४॥
tadadbhutam amanyanta dṛṣṭvā sarve mahīkṣitaḥ। yad viveśa mahābāhuṃ tat tejaḥ puruṣottamam ॥2-42-24॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अमन्यन्त (amanyanta) - they considered; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महीक्षितः (mahīkṣitaḥ) - kings; यत् (yat) - which; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; महाबाहुम् (mahābāhum) - the mighty-armed; तत् (tat) - that; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; पुरुषोत्तमम् (puruṣottamam) - the supreme person;]
(That wonderful (event) they considered, having seen, all the kings; which entered the mighty-armed, that splendor, the supreme person.)
All the kings, having seen that wonderful event—how that splendor, the supreme person, entered the mighty-armed one—considered it remarkable. (2-42-24)
अनभ्रे प्रववर्ष द्यौः पपात ज्वलिताशनिः। कृष्णेन निहते चैद्ये चचाल च वसुन्धरा ॥२-४२-२५॥
anabhre pravavarṣa dyauḥ papāta jvalitāśaniḥ। kṛṣṇena nihate caidye cacāla ca vasundharā ॥2-42-25॥
[अनभ्रे (anabhre) - in a cloudless sky; प्रववर्ष (pravavarṣa) - rained forth; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - the sky; पपात (papāta) - fell; ज्वलिताशनिः (jvalitāśaniḥ) - with blazing lightning; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; निहते (nihate) - having been slain; चैद्ये (caidye) - the Caidya (Śiśupāla); चचाल (cacāla) - trembled; च (ca) - and; वसुन्धरा (vasundharā) - the earth;]
(In a cloudless sky, the sky rained forth, blazing lightning fell; when the Caidya (Śiśupāla) was slain by Kṛṣṇa, the earth also trembled.)
When Kṛṣṇa killed the Caidya (Śiśupāla), the sky rained down blazing lightning from a cloudless sky, and the earth trembled as well. (2-42-25)
ततः केचिन्महीपाला नाब्रुवंस्तत्र किञ्चन। अतीतवाक्पथे काले प्रेक्षमाणा जनार्दनम् ॥२-४२-२६॥
tataḥ kecinmahīpālā nābruvaṃstatra kiñcana। atītavākpathe kāle prekṣamāṇā janārdanam ॥2-42-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; केचित् (kecit) - some; महीपाला (mahīpālā) - kings; न (na) - not; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - spoke; तत्र (tatra) - there; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; अतीतवाक्पथे (atīta-vāk-pathe) - in the past speech-path; काले (kāle) - in time; प्रेक्षमाणाः (prekṣamāṇāḥ) - looking at; जनार्दनम् (janārdanam) - Janardana (Krishna);]
(Then some kings did not speak anything there, looking at Janardana (Krishna) in the time along the path of past speech.)
Then, some of the kings remained silent there, gazing at Janardana (Krishna), reflecting on the words spoken in the past. (2-42-26)
हस्तैर्हस्ताग्रमपरे प्रत्यपीषन्नमर्षिताः। अपरे दशनैरोष्ठानदशन्क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥२-४२-२७॥
hastair hastāgram apare pratyapīṣan namarṣitāḥ। apare daśanaiḥ oṣṭhān adaśan krodhamūrchitāḥ ॥2-42-27॥
[हस्तैः (hastaiḥ) - with hands; हस्ताग्रम् (hastāgram) - the tip of the hand; अपरे (apare) - others; प्रत्यपीषन् (pratyapīṣan) - pressed against; अमर्षिताः (namarṣitāḥ) - angered; अपरे (apare) - others; दशनैः (daśanaiḥ) - with teeth; ओष्ठान् (oṣṭhān) - lips; अदशन् (adaśan) - bit; क्रोधमूर्छिताः (krodhamūrchitāḥ) - overcome with anger;]
(With hands, the tip of the hand, others pressed against, angered; others, with teeth, lips, bit, overcome with anger.)
Some, angered, pressed the tips of their hands with their hands; others, overcome with anger, bit their lips with their teeth. (2-42-27)
रहस्तु केचिद्वार्ष्णेयं प्रशशंसुर्नराधिपाः। केचिदेव तु संरब्धा मध्यस्थास्त्वपरेऽभवन् ॥२-४२-२८॥
rahastu kecid vārṣṇeyaṃ praśaśaṃsur narādhipāḥ। kecid eva tu saṃrabdhā madhyasthās tv apare 'bhavan ॥2-42-28॥
[रहः (rahaḥ) - secret; तु (tu) - but; केचित् (kecit) - some; वार्ष्णेयम् (vārṣṇeyam) - descendant of Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa); प्रशशंसुः (praśaśaṃsuḥ) - praised; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings; केचित् (kecit) - some; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; संरब्धाः (saṃrabdhāḥ) - angry; मध्यस्थाः (madhyasthāḥ) - neutral; त्व् (tv) - but; अपरे (apare) - others; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(But in secret, some kings praised the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; but some indeed were angry, and others became neutral.)
But secretly, some kings praised Kṛṣṇa, while others were angry, and yet others remained neutral. (2-42-28)
प्रहृष्टाः केशवं जग्मुः संस्तुवन्तो महर्षयः। ब्राह्मणाश्च महात्मानः पार्थिवाश्च महाबलाः ॥२-४२-२९॥
prahṛṣṭāḥ keśavaṃ jagmuḥ saṃstuvanto maharṣayaḥ। brāhmaṇāś ca mahātmānaḥ pārthivāś ca mahābalāḥ ॥2-42-29॥
[प्रहृष्टाः (prahṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; केशवं (keśavam) - Keśava; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; संस्तुवन्तः (saṃstuvantaḥ) - praising; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty;]
(Joyful, to Keśava went, praising, great sages; Brāhmaṇas and great-souled, kings and mighty;)
The joyful great sages, Brāhmaṇas of great soul, and mighty kings went to Keśava, praising him. (2-42-29)
पाण्डवस्त्वब्रवीद्भ्रातॄन्सत्कारेण महीपतिम्। दमघोषात्मजं वीरं संसाधयत मा चिरम् ॥ तथा च कृतवन्तस्ते भ्रातुर्वै शासनं तदा ॥२-४२-३०॥
pāṇḍavas tv abravīd bhrātṝn satkāreṇa mahīpatim। damaghoṣātmajaṃ vīraṃ saṃsādhayata mā ciram ॥ tathā ca kṛtavantas te bhrātur vai śāsanaṃ tadā ॥2-42-30॥
[पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; तु (tu) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - to the brothers; सत्कारेण (satkāreṇa) - with honor; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - the king; दमघोषात्मजम् (damaghoṣātmajam) - the son of Damaghoṣa; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; संसाधयत (saṃsādhayata) - accomplish; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; कृतवन्तः (kṛtavantaḥ) - did; ते (te) - they; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; वै (vai) - indeed; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The son of Pāṇḍu, however, said to the brothers, "With honor, accomplish the king, the son of Damaghoṣa, the hero; do not delay." Thus, they did indeed the command of the brother then.)
But Pāṇḍava said to his brothers, "With due honor, accomplish (the task regarding) the heroic king, the son of Damaghoṣa; do not delay." So they then carried out their brother's command. (2-42-30)
चेदीनामाधिपत्ये च पुत्रमस्य महीपतिम्। अभ्यषिञ्चत्तदा पार्थः सह तैर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥२-४२-३१॥
cedīnām ādhipatye ca putram asya mahīpatim। abhyaṣiñcat tadā pārthaḥ saha tair vasudhādhipaiḥ ॥2-42-31॥
[चेदीनाम् (cedīnām) - of the Cedis; आधिपत्ये (ādhipatye) - in the sovereignty; च (ca) - and; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अस्य (asya) - his; महीपतिम् (mahīpatim) - king; अभ्यषिञ्चत् (abhyaṣiñcat) - anointed; तदा (tadā) - then; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); सह (saha) - together with; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; वसुधाधिपैः (vasudhādhipaiḥ) - earth-lords (kings);]
(In the sovereignty of the Cedis, and his son, the king, then Pārtha anointed together with those earth-lords (kings).)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna), together with those other kings, anointed his son as the king in the sovereignty of the Cedis. (2-42-31)
ततः स कुरुराजस्य क्रतुः सर्वसमृद्धिमान्। यूनां प्रीतिकरो राजन्सम्बभौ विपुलौजसः ॥२-४२-३२॥
tataḥ sa kururājasya kratuḥ sarvasamṛddhimān। yūnāṃ prītikaro rājansambabhau vipulaujasaḥ ॥2-42-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; कुरुराजस्य (kururājasya) - of the king of the Kurus; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; सर्वसमृद्धिमान् (sarvasamṛddhimān) - possessed of all prosperity; यूनां (yūnām) - of the youths; प्रीतिकरः (prītikaraḥ) - causing delight; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सम्बभौ (sambabhau) - arose; विपुलौजसः (vipulaujasaḥ) - of great energy;]
(Then, he, the sacrifice of the king of the Kurus, possessed of all prosperity, causing delight to the youths, O king, arose, of great energy.)
Then, O king, the sacrifice of the king of the Kurus, endowed with all prosperity and of great energy, arose, bringing delight to the youths. (2-42-32)
शान्तविघ्नः सुखारम्भः प्रभूतधनधान्यवान्। अन्नवान्बहुभक्ष्यश्च केशवेन सुरक्षितः ॥२-४२-३३॥
śāntavighnaḥ sukhārambhaḥ prabhūtadhanadhānyavān। annavānbahubhakṣyaśca keśavena surakṣitaḥ ॥2-42-33॥
[शान्त (śānta) - pacified; विघ्नः (vighnaḥ) - obstacle; सुख (sukha) - happiness; आरम्भः (ārambhaḥ) - beginning; प्रभूत (prabhūta) - abundant; धन (dhana) - wealth; धान्यवान् (dhānyavān) - possessing grain; अन्नवान् (annavān) - possessing food; बहु (bahu) - much; भक्ष्यः (bhakṣyaḥ) - edible; च (ca) - and; केशवेन (keśavena) - by Keśava; सुरक्षितः (surakṣitaḥ) - well-protected;]
(Pacified obstacles, a beginning of happiness, abundant in wealth and grain, possessing food and much that is edible, and well-protected by Keśava.)
With obstacles pacified, happiness at the outset, abundant wealth and grain, possessing food and many edibles, and well-protected by Keśava. (2-42-33)
समापयामास च तं राजसूयं महाक्रतुम्। तं तु यज्ञं महाबाहुरा समाप्तेर्जनार्दनः ॥ ररक्ष भगवाञ्शौरिः शार्ङ्गचक्रगदाधरः ॥२-४२-३४॥
samāpayāmāsa ca taṃ rājasūyaṃ mahākratum। taṃ tu yajñaṃ mahābāhurā samāpterjanārdanaḥ ॥ rarakṣa bhagavānśauriḥ śārṅgacakragadādharaḥ ॥2-42-34॥
[समापयामास (samāpayāmāsa) - completed; caused to finish; च (ca) - and; तं (tam) - that; राजसूयम् (rājasūyam) - Rājasūya (royal consecration sacrifice); महाक्रतुम् (mahākratum) - great sacrifice; तं (tam) - that; तु (tu) - but; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; अ (a) - (euphonic combination); समाप्तेः (samāpteḥ) - after completion; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (epithet of Kṛṣṇa); ररक्ष (rarakṣa) - protected; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - descendant of Śūra (Kṛṣṇa); शार्ङ्गचक्रगदाधरः (śārṅgacakragadādharaḥ) - holder of the Śārṅga bow, discus, and mace;]
(And he completed that Rājasūya, the great sacrifice. That sacrifice, after its completion, was protected by mighty-armed Janārdana, the Lord, the descendant of Śūra, the holder of the Śārṅga bow, discus, and mace. (2-42-34))
He completed the great Rājasūya sacrifice. After its completion, mighty-armed Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), the Lord, descendant of Śūra and wielder of the Śārṅga bow, discus, and mace, protected that sacrifice. (2-42-34)
ततस्त्ववभृथस्नातं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रमभिगम्येदमब्रवीत् ॥२-४२-३५॥
tatastvavabhṛthasnātaṃ dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। samastaṃ pārthivaṃ kṣatramabhigamyaidamabravīt ॥2-42-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्व् (tv) - indeed; अवभृथस्नातं (avabhṛthasnātam) - having bathed after the concluding (avabhṛtha) rite; धर्मराजं (dharmarājam) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; समस्तं (samastam) - entire; पार्थिवं (pārthivam) - of kings; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya class; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then indeed, having bathed after the avabhṛtha rite, the king of dharma Yudhishthira, having approached the entire kṣatriya class of kings, said this.)
Then, after Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, had bathed following the avabhṛtha rite, he approached all the assembled kṣatriya kings and spoke these words. (2-42-35)
दिष्ट्या वर्धसि धर्मज्ञ साम्राज्यं प्राप्तवान्विभो। आजमीढाजमीढानां यशः संवर्धितं त्वया ॥ कर्मणैतेन राजेन्द्र धर्मश्च सुमहान्कृतः ॥२-४२-३६॥
diṣṭyā vardhasi dharmajña sāmrājyaṃ prāptavān vibho। ājamīḍhājamīḍhānāṃ yaśaḥ saṃvardhitaṃ tvayā॥ karmaṇaitena rājendra dharmaś ca sumahān kṛtaḥ॥2-42-36॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; वर्धसि (vardhasi) - you prosper; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; साम्राज्यं (sāmrājyaṃ) - sovereignty; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - have obtained; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; आजमीढ (ājamīḍha) - descendant of Ajamīḍha; आजमीढानां (ājamīḍhānāṃ) - of the Ajamīḍhas; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; संवर्धितं (saṃvardhitaṃ) - has been increased; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; एतेन (etena) - by this; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; च (ca) - and; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done;]
(By fortune, you prosper, O knower of dharma; you have obtained sovereignty, O mighty one. O descendant of Ajamīḍha, the fame of the Ajamīḍhas has been increased by you. By this action, O king, very great dharma has been done.)
By good fortune, you thrive, O knower of dharma, and have attained sovereignty, O mighty one. O descendant of Ajamīḍha, you have enhanced the fame of the Ajamīḍhas. Through this deed, O king, you have accomplished great dharma. (2-42-36)
आपृच्छामो नरव्याघ्र सर्वकामैः सुपूजिताः। स्वराष्ट्राणि गमिष्यामस्तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥२-४२-३७॥
āpṛcchāmo naravyāghra sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitāḥ। svarāṣṭrāṇi gamiṣyāmas tadanujñātum arhasi ॥2-42-37॥
[आपृच्छामः (āpṛcchāmaḥ) - we take leave; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; सुपूजिताः (supūjitāḥ) - well-honored; स्वराष्ट्राणि (svarāṣṭrāṇi) - to our own kingdoms; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall go; तत् (tat) - that; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(We take leave, O tiger among men, having been well-honored with all desires; we shall go to our own kingdoms. You ought to permit that.)
O tiger among men, we have been well-honored with all our desires fulfilled; now we seek your leave to return to our own kingdoms. Please grant us permission. (2-42-37)
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। यथार्हं पूज्य नृपतीन्भ्रातॄन्सर्वानुवाच ह ॥२-४२-३८॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ rājñāṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। yathārhaṃ pūjya nṛpatīn bhrātṝn sarvān uvāca ha ॥2-42-38॥

(Having heard the speech of the kings, Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, having honored all the kings and brothers as was proper, indeed said.)
Having listened to the words of the kings, Yudhishthira, the righteous king, respectfully addressed all the kings and his brothers as was appropriate. (2-42-38)
राजानः सर्व एवैते प्रीत्यास्मान्समुपागताः। प्रस्थिताः स्वानि राष्ट्राणि मामापृच्छ्य परन्तपाः ॥ तेऽनुव्रजत भद्रं वो विषयान्तं नृपोत्तमान् ॥२-४२-३९॥
rājānaḥ sarva evaite prītyāsmānsamupāgatāḥ। prasthitāḥ svāni rāṣṭrāṇi māmāpṛcchya parantapāḥ ॥ te'anuvrajata bhadraṃ vo viṣayāntaṃ nṛpottamān ॥2-42-39॥

(The kings, all these indeed, with affection have approached us. Having taken leave of me, the scorchers of foes, have departed to their own kingdoms. They follow (you), welfare to you, to the border of the territory, the best of kings.)
All these kings have come to us with affection. Having taken leave of me, the mighty warriors have departed to their own kingdoms. They are following you, O best of kings, wishing you well, up to the border of the territory. (2-42-39)
भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय पाण्डवा धर्मचारिणः। यथार्हं नृपमुख्यांस्तानेकैकं समनुव्रजन् ॥२-४२-४०॥

(Following in the same way the other Kṣatriyas, the foremost among Kṣatriyas; thus, having been honored, they indeed departed, and all the Brāhmaṇas as well.)

गतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु सर्वेषु भरतर्षभ। युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ॥२-४२-४५॥
gateṣu pārthivendreṣu sarveṣu bharatarṣabha। yudhiṣṭhiram uvācedaṃ vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ॥2-42-45॥

आपृच्छे त्वां गमिष्यामि द्वारकां कुरुनन्दन। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं दिष्ट्या त्वं प्राप्तवानसि ॥२-४२-४६॥
āpṛcche tvāṃ gamiṣyāmi dvārakāṃ kurunandana। rājasūyaṃ kratuśreṣṭhaṃ diṣṭyā tvaṃ prāptavān asi ॥2-42-46॥

(I take leave of you, I shall go to Dvārakā, O delight of the Kurus. The Rājasūya, the best of sacrifices, by fortune you have obtained.)
I take my leave of you; I will go to Dvārakā, O joy of the Kurus. By good fortune, you have accomplished the Rājasūya, the greatest of sacrifices. (2-42-46)
तमुवाचैवमुक्तस्तु धर्मराण्मधुसूदनम्। तव प्रसादाद्गोविन्द प्राप्तवानस्मि वै क्रतुम् ॥२-४२-४७॥
tam uvācaivam uktas tu dharmarāṇ madhusūdanam। tava prasādād govinda prāptavān asmi vai kratum ॥2-42-47॥

(Him said thus addressed but the king of dharma to Madhusūdana. By your grace, Govinda, I have indeed obtained the sacrifice.)
Thus addressed, the king of dharma said to Madhusūdana: "By your grace, Govinda, I have indeed obtained the sacrifice." (2-42-47)
समस्तं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं त्वत्प्रसादाद्वशानुगम्। उपादाय बलिं मुख्यं मामेव समुपस्थितम् ॥२-४२-४८॥
samastaṃ pārthivaṃ kṣatraṃ tvatprasādād vaśānugam। upādāya baliṃ mukhyaṃ māmeva samupasthitam ॥2-42-48॥
[समस्तं (samastam) - all; entire; पार्थिवं (pārthivam) - of kings; royal; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - the kṣatriya class; warriors; त्वत्प्रसादात् (tvatprasādāt) - by your favor; due to your grace; वशानुगम् (vaśānugam) - subject to control; obedient; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; having collected; बलिं (baliṃ) - tribute; offering; मुख्यं (mukhyam) - principal; chief; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; indeed; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - has come; has approached;]
(All the royal kṣatriya class, obedient by your favor, having collected the chief tribute, has come only to me.)
All the royal kṣatriyas, obedient due to your favor, have brought the chief tribute and have come only to me. (2-42-48)
न वयं त्वामृते वीर रंस्यामेह कथञ्चन। अवश्यं चापि गन्तव्या त्वया द्वारवती पुरी ॥२-४२-४९॥
na vayaṃ tvāmṛte vīra raṃsyāmeha kathaṃcana। avaśyaṃ cāpi gantavyā tvayā dvāravatī purī ॥2-42-49॥

(Not we, without you, O hero, shall enjoy here in any way. Certainly and also must be gone by you to the city of Dvāravatī.)
O hero, without you, we shall not enjoy ourselves here in any way. Certainly, you must go to the city of Dvāravatī. (2-42-49)
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा युधिष्ठिरसहायवान्। अभिगम्याब्रवीत्प्रीतः पृथां पृथुयशा हरिः ॥२-४२-५०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa dharmātmā yudhiṣṭhira-sahāyavān। abhigamya-abravīt-prītaḥ pṛthāṃ pṛthu-yaśā hariḥ ॥2-42-50॥

(Thus having been addressed, he, the righteous-souled, having Yudhishthira as companion, having approached, said, pleased, to Pritha, the greatly famed Hari (Krishna).)
Thus addressed, the righteous-souled Hari (Krishna), companion of Yudhishthira, approached Pritha and, being pleased, spoke to her. (2-42-50)
साम्राज्यं समनुप्राप्ताः पुत्रास्तेऽद्य पितृष्वसः। सिद्धार्था वसुमन्तश्च सा त्वं प्रीतिमवाप्नुहि ॥२-४२-५१॥
sāmrājyaṃ samanuprāptāḥ putrās te'dya pitṛṣvasaḥ| siddhārthā vasumantaś ca sā tvaṃ prītim avāpnuhi ॥2-42-51॥
[साम्राज्यं (sāmrājyaṃ) - universal sovereignty; समनुप्राप्ताः (samanuprāptāḥ) - completely attained; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; ते (te) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; पितृष्वसः (pitṛṣvasaḥ) - sisters of your father; सिद्धार्थाः (siddhārthāḥ) - Siddhartha; वसुमन्तः (vasumantaḥ) - Vasumanta; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - joy; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - attain;]
(Universal sovereignty completely attained your sons today, sisters of your father; Siddhartha, Vasumanta and she, you joy attain.)
Today, your sons, Siddhartha and Vasumanta, have attained universal sovereignty, O sister of your father; may you attain joy. (2-42-51)
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया चाहं द्वारकां गन्तुमुत्सहे। सुभद्रां द्रौपदीं चैव सभाजयत केशवः ॥२-४२-५२॥
anujñātastvayā cāhaṃ dvārakāṃ gantumutsahe| subhadrāṃ draupadīṃ caiva sabhājayata keśavaḥ ॥2-42-52॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; द्वारकां (dvārakāṃ) - Dvaraka; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; सुभद्रां (subhadrāṃ) - Subhadra; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadi; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सभाजयत (sabhājayata) - honored; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava;]
(Permitted by you and I am able to go to Dvaraka. Subhadra and Draupadi indeed Keśava honored.)
Having received your permission, I am able to go to Dvaraka. Keśava honored both Subhadra and Draupadi. (2-42-52)
निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुराच्चैव युधिष्ठिरसहायवान्। स्नातश्च कृतजप्यश्च ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥२-४२-५३॥
niṣkramyāntaḥpurāccaiva yudhiṣṭhirasahāyavān| snātaśca kṛtajapyaśca brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca ॥2-42-53॥
[निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having gone out; अन्तःपुरात् (antaḥpurāt) - from the inner apartments; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; सहायवान् (sahāyavān) - accompanied by; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; च (ca) - and; कृतजप्यः (kṛtajapyaḥ) - having performed the muttering of prayers; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; स्वस्ति (svasti) - welfare; वाच्य (vācya) - to be addressed; च (ca) - and;]
(Having gone out from the inner apartments and indeed accompanied by Yudhishthira, having bathed and having performed the muttering of prayers, the Brāhmaṇas are to be addressed with welfare also.)
Having left the inner chambers with Yudhishthira as his companion, having bathed and completed his prayers, he should also offer words of welfare to the Brāhmaṇas. (2-42-53)
ततो मेघवरप्रख्यं स्यन्दनं वै सुकल्पितम्। योजयित्वा महाराज दारुकः प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥२-४२-५४॥
tato meghavara-prakhyaṃ syandanaṃ vai sukalpitam। yojayitvā mahārāja dārukaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ ॥2-42-54॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मेघवरप्रख्यम् (meghavara-prakhyam) - like the best of clouds; स्यन्दनम् (syandanam) - chariot; वै (vai) - indeed; सुकल्पितम् (sukalpitam) - well-prepared; योजयित्वा (yojayitvā) - having yoked; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दारुकः (dārukaḥ) - Dāruka; प्रत्युपस्थितः (pratyupasthitaḥ) - stood ready;]
(Then, having yoked the chariot, indeed well-prepared and like the best of clouds, Dāruka stood ready, O great king.)
Then Dāruka, having yoked the well-prepared chariot that resembled the best of clouds, stood ready, O great king. (2-42-54)
उपस्थितं रथं दृष्ट्वा तार्क्ष्यप्रवरकेतनम्। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य समारुह्य महामनाः ॥ प्रययौ पुण्डरीकाक्षस्ततो द्वारवतीं पुरीम् ॥२-४२-५५॥
upasthitaṃ rathaṃ dṛṣṭvā tārkṣyapravaraketanam। pradakṣiṇamupāvṛtya samāruhya mahāmanāḥ ॥ prayayau puṇḍarīkākṣastato dvāravatīṃ purīm ॥2-42-55॥

(Having seen the present chariot with Garuḍa as the foremost banner, having turned towards and circumambulated it, having mounted, the great-minded lotus-eyed (Kṛṣṇa) then departed to the city of Dvāravatī.)
Having seen the chariot bearing Garuḍa as its foremost banner, Kṛṣṇa, the great-minded lotus-eyed one, circumambulated it, mounted, and then departed for the city of Dvāravatī. (2-42-55)
तं पद्भ्यामनुवव्राज धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातृभिः सहितः श्रीमान्वासुदेवं महाबलम् ॥२-४२-५६॥

(Him with (his) feet followed the king of dharma, Yudhishthira, with (his) brothers together, the prosperous, Vasudeva, the mighty.)
Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, along with his prosperous brothers, followed the mighty Vasudeva on foot. (2-42-56)
ततो मुहूर्तं सङ्गृह्य स्यन्दनप्रवरं हरिः। अब्रवीत्पुण्डरीकाक्षः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२-४२-५७॥
tato muhūrtaṃ saṅgṛhya syandanapravaraṃ hariḥ। abravītpundarīkākṣaḥ kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥2-42-57॥

(Then, having taken the best chariot for a moment, Hari (Kṛṣṇa), the lotus-eyed one, said to Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī.)
Then, after taking the best chariot for a moment, Hari (Kṛṣṇa), the lotus-eyed, spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī. (2-42-57)
अप्रमत्तः स्थितो नित्यं प्रजाः पाहि विशां पते। पर्जन्यमिव भूतानि महाद्रुममिवाण्डजाः ॥ बान्धवास्त्वोपजीवन्तु सहस्राक्षमिवामराः ॥२-४२-५८॥
apramattaḥ sthito nityaṃ prajāḥ pāhi viśāṃ pate। parjanyamiva bhūtāni mahādrumamivāṇḍajāḥ ॥ bāndhavāstvopajīvantu sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ ॥2-42-58॥
[अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - not-negligent; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; पाहि (pāhi) - protect; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; पर्जन्यम् (parjanyam) - rain-cloud; इव (iva) - like; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; महाद्रुमम् (mahādrumam) - great tree; इव (iva) - like; अण्डजाः (aṇḍajāḥ) - those born from eggs; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उपजीवन्तु (upajīvantu) - may live upon; सहस्राक्षम् (sahasrākṣam) - Indra; इव (iva) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - immortals;]
(Not-negligent, standing always, the subjects protect, O lord of the people. Like creatures (depend on) the rain-cloud, like those born from eggs (depend on) the great tree. Let your relatives live upon you, like the immortals (live upon) Indra. (2-42-58))
O lord of the people, always remain vigilant and steadfast, and protect your subjects. Just as all creatures depend on the rain-cloud, and birds depend on the great tree, so too may your relatives depend on you, as the immortals depend on Indra. (2-42-58)
कृत्वा परस्परेणैवं संविदं कृष्णपाण्डवौ। अन्योन्यं समनुज्ञाप्य जग्मतुः स्वगृहान्प्रति ॥२-४२-५९॥
kṛtvā paraspareṇaivaṃ saṃvidaṃ kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau। anyonyaṃ samanujñāpya jagmatuḥ svagṛhānprati ॥2-42-59॥
[कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; (from kṛ, to do, with absolutive suffix -tvā); परस्परेण (paraspareṇa) - by each other; (instrumental of paraspara, mutual); एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; संविदं (saṃvidam) - agreement; understanding; (accusative of saṃvid, agreement); कृष्णपाण्डवौ (kṛṣṇapāṇḍavau) - Kṛṣṇa and Pāṇḍava; (dual nominative); अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; (accusative); समनुज्ञाप्य (samanujñāpya) - having mutually permitted; (absolutive of sam-anu-√jñā, to permit); जग्मतुः (jagmatuḥ) - they both went; (dual perfect of √gam, to go); स्वगृहान् (svagṛhān) - to their own homes; (accusative plural); प्रति (prati) - towards; to;]
(Having made an agreement thus with each other, Kṛṣṇa and Pāṇḍava, having mutually permitted each other, both went towards their own homes.)
After making such an agreement with each other, Kṛṣṇa and the Pāṇḍava, having mutually taken leave, both went to their respective homes. (2-42-59)
गते द्वारवतीं कृष्णे सात्वतप्रवरे नृप। एको दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ॥ तस्यां सभायां दिव्यायामूषतुस्तौ नरर्षभौ ॥२-४२-६०॥
gate dvāravatīṃ kṛṣṇe sātvata-pravare nṛpa| eko duryodhano rājā śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ || tasyāṃ sabhāyāṃ divyāyām ūṣatus tau nara-ṛṣabhau ||2-42-60||
[गते (gate) - having gone; द्वारवतीं (dvāravatīṃ) - to Dvāravatī; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - Kṛṣṇa; सात्वतप्रवरे (sātvata-pravare) - the foremost among the Sātvatas; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; एको (eko) - alone; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - the king; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - the son of Subala; तस्यां (tasyāṃ) - in that; सभायां (sabhāyām) - assembly; दिव्यायाम् (divyāyām) - divine; ऊषतुः (ūṣatuḥ) - remained; तौ (tau) - those two; नरर्षभौ (nara-ṛṣabhau) - bulls among men;]
(When Kṛṣṇa, the foremost among the Sātvatas, had gone to Dvāravatī, O king, Duryodhana alone, the king, and Śakuni, the son of Subala, in that divine assembly, those two bulls among men remained.)
O king, when Kṛṣṇa, the foremost among the Sātvatas, had departed for Dvāravatī, Duryodhana and Śakuni, the son of Subala, remained alone in that divine assembly. (2-42-60)
