यां त्वमेतां श्रियं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रे युधिष्ठिरे। तप्यसे तां हरिष्यामि द्यूतेनाहूयतां परः ॥२-५१-१॥
yāṃ tvametāṃ śriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputre yudhiṣṭhire। tapyase tāṃ hariṣyāmi dyūtenāhūyatāṃ paraḥ ॥2-51-1॥
[याम् (yām) - whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एताम् (etām) - this; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पाण्डुपुत्रे (pāṇḍuputre) - in the son of Pāṇḍu; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhiṣṭhira; तप्यसे (tapyase) - you are tormented; ताम् (tām) - her; हरिष्यामि (hariṣyāmi) - I shall take away; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; आहूयताम् (āhūyatām) - let (him) be invited; परः (paraḥ) - the other;]
(Whom you, having seen this prosperity in the son of Pāṇḍu, Yudhiṣṭhira, are tormented by—her I shall take away by gambling; let the other be invited.)
Seeing this prosperity in Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, by which you are tormented, I shall take that away by gambling; let the other be invited. (2-51-1)
अगत्वा संशयमहमयुद्ध्वा च चमूमुखे। अक्षान्क्षिपन्नक्षतः सन्विद्वानविदुषो जये ॥२-५१-२॥
agatvā saṃśayam aham ayuddhvā ca camūmukhe। akṣān kṣipan akṣataḥ san vidvān aviduṣo jaye ॥2-51-2॥
[अगत्वा (agatvā) - not having gone; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; अहम् (aham) - I; अयुद्ध्वा (ayuddhvā) - not having fought; च (ca) - and; चमूमुखे (camūmukhe) - in the face of the army; अक्षान् (akṣān) - dice; क्षिपन् (kṣipan) - throwing; अक्षतः (akṣataḥ) - unwounded; सन् (san) - being; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; अविदुषः (aviduṣaḥ) - of the unwise; जये (jaye) - in victory;]
(Not having gone, doubt, I, not having fought, and, in the face of the army, dice, throwing, unwounded, being, wise, of the unwise, in victory.)
Without going and without fighting in the face of the army, I, casting dice, being unwounded, am wise in victory over the unwise. (2-51-2)
ग्लहान्धनूंषि मे विद्धि शरानक्षांश्च भारत। अक्षाणां हृदयं मे ज्यां रथं विद्धि ममास्तरम् ॥२-५१-३॥

[ग्लहा (glahā) - dice; अन्धनूंषि (andhanūṃṣi) - gambling implements; मे (me) - my; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अक्षांश् (akṣāṃś) - dice; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अक्षाणां (akṣāṇāṃ) - of dice; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; मे (me) - my; ज्याम् (jyām) - bowstring; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मम (mama) - my; अस्तरम् (astaram) - weapon;]
(Know the dice and gambling implements as my arrows, O Bhārata, and the dice as my chariot's heart, the bowstring as mine, and the chariot as my weapon.)
O Bhārata, know that the dice and gambling implements are my arrows; the dice are the heart of my chariot, the bowstring is mine, and the chariot is my weapon. (2-51-3)
दुर्योधन उवाच॥

अयमुत्सहते राजञ्श्रियमाहर्तुमक्षवित्। द्यूतेन पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यस्तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥२-५१-४॥
ayam utsahate rājan śriyam āhartum akṣavit। dyūtena pāṇḍu-putrebhyas tat tubhyaṃ tāta rocatām ॥2-51-4॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this one; उत्सहते (utsahate) - endeavors; राजन् (rājan) - O king; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity; आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to bring; अक्षवित् (akṣavit) - gambler; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यः (pāṇḍu-putrebhyaḥ) - from the sons of Pāṇḍu; तत् (tat) - that; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - for you; तात (tāta) - O dear one; रोचताम् (rocatām) - let it be pleasing;]
(This one endeavors, O king, to bring prosperity as a gambler by gambling from the sons of Pāṇḍu; let that be pleasing to you, O dear one.)
O king, this gambler is striving to win prosperity from the sons of Pāṇḍu by means of gambling; may this be pleasing to you, dear one. (2-51-4)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

स्थितोऽस्मि शासने भ्रातुर्विदुरस्य महात्मनः। तेन सङ्गम्य वेत्स्यामि कार्यस्यास्य विनिश्चयम् ॥२-५१-५॥
sthito'smi śāsane bhrātuḥ vidurasya mahātmanaḥ। tena saṅgamya vetsyāmi kāryasya asya viniścayam ॥2-51-5॥
[स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; established; fixed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; शासने (śāsane) - in the command; in the rule; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; तेन (tena) - with him; by him; सङ्गम्य (saṅgamya) - having met; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - I shall know; कार्यस्य (kāryasya) - of the matter; of the task; अस्य (asya) - of this; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - decision; determination;]
(I am established in the command of my brother, the great-souled Vidura. Having met with him, I shall know the decision of this matter.)
I remain under the command of my noble brother Vidura. After meeting with him, I will learn the resolution of this matter. (2-51-5)

विहनिष्यति ते बुद्धिं विदुरो मुक्तसंशयः। पाण्डवानां हिते युक्तो न तथा मम कौरव ॥२-५१-६॥
vihaniṣyati te buddhiṃ viduro muktasaṃśayaḥ। pāṇḍavānāṃ hite yukto na tathā mama kaurava ॥2-51-6॥
[विहनिष्यति (vihaniṣyati) - will obstruct; (from vi-han, to strike down, obstruct) ते (te) - your; (of you) बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; (understanding, mind) विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; (proper noun, name) मुक्तसंशयः (muktasaṃśayaḥ) - free from doubt; (mukta, released + saṃśaya, doubt) पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṃ) - of the Pāṇḍavas; (genitive plural) हिते (hite) - in the welfare; (locative singular of hita, welfare) युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; (joined, devoted) न (na) - not; (negation) तथा (tathā) - in the same way; (thus, so) मम (mama) - my; (of me) कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; (addressing a descendant of Kuru, i.e., Dhṛtarāṣṭra);]
(Vidura, free from doubt, will obstruct your intellect; engaged in the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, not so in mine, O Kaurava.)
O Kaurava, Vidura, who is free from doubt, will hinder your judgment; he is devoted to the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, not to mine. (2-51-6)
नारभेत्परसामर्थ्यात्पुरुषः कार्यमात्मनः। मतिसाम्यं द्वयोर्नास्ति कार्येषु कुरुनन्दन ॥२-५१-७॥
nārabhet parasāmarthyāt puruṣaḥ kāryam ātmanaḥ। matisāmyaṃ dvayor nāsti kāryeṣu kurunandana ॥2-51-7॥
[न (na) - not; आरभेत् (ārabhet) - should undertake; पर (para) - another's; सामर्थ्यात् (sāmarthyāt) - due to capability; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; मतिसाम्यं (matisāmyaṃ) - equality of intellect; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of two; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in actions; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(A person should not undertake another's action due to capability; equality of intellect of two does not exist in actions, O delight of the Kurus.)
O Kurunandana, a person should not undertake the work of another just because of capability; for in actions, equality of intellect between two people does not exist. (2-51-7)
भयं परिहरन्मन्द आत्मानं परिपालयन्। वर्षासु क्लिन्नकटवत्तिष्ठन्नेवावसीदति ॥२-५१-८॥
bhayaṃ pariharanmanda ātmānaṃ paripālayan। varṣāsu klinnakaṭavattiṣṭhannevāvasīdati ॥2-51-8॥
[भयम् (bhayam) - fear; परिहरन् (pariharan) - removing; मन्द (manda) - slow; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; परिपालयन् (paripālayan) - protecting; वर्षासु (varṣāsu) - in the rains; क्लिन्नकटवत् (klinnakaṭavat) - like wet wood; तिष्ठन् (tiṣṭhan) - standing; एव (eva) - just; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - sinks;]
(Removing fear, slow, protecting oneself, in the rains, like wet wood, just standing, sinks.)
Slowly, removing fear and protecting himself, he stands in the rains like wet wood and simply sinks down. (2-51-8)
न व्याधयो नापि यमः श्रेयःप्राप्तिं प्रतीक्षते। यावदेव भवेत्कल्पस्तावच्छ्रेयः समाचरेत् ॥२-५१-९॥
na vyādhayo nāpi yamaḥ śreyaḥ-prāptiṃ pratīkṣate। yāvadeva bhavet kalpaḥ tāvat śreyaḥ samācaret ॥2-51-9॥
[न (na) - not; व्याधयः (vyādhayaḥ) - diseases; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; यमः (yamaḥ) - death; श्रेयःप्राप्तिं (śreyaḥ-prāptiṃ) - attainment of the highest good; प्रतीक्षते (pratīkṣate) - waits for; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; एव (eva) - indeed; भवेत् (bhavet) - exists; कल्पः (kalpaḥ) - life-span; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the highest good; समाचरेत् (samācaret) - should practice;]
(Neither diseases nor even death waits for the attainment of the highest good. As long as the life-span exists, so long one should practice the highest good.)
Neither disease nor death waits for the attainment of the highest good. Therefore, as long as one lives, one should strive to practice virtue. (2-51-9)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

सर्वथा पुत्र बलिभिर्विग्रहं ते न रोचये। वैरं विकारं सृजति तद्वै शस्त्रमनायसम् ॥२-५१-१०॥
sarvathā putra balibhirvigrahaṃ te na rocaye। vairaṃ vikāraṃ sṛjati tadvai śastramanāyasam ॥2-51-10॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; पुत्र (putra) - son; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - by the strong; विग्रहम् (vigraham) - conflict; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; रोचये (rocaye) - I approve; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; विकारम् (vikāram) - disturbance; सृजति (sṛjati) - creates; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; अनायसम् (anāyasam) - without effort;]
(In every way, son, I do not approve of conflict with the strong; enmity indeed creates disturbance, that weapon is without effort.)
Son, in every way, I do not approve of your conflict with the strong; for enmity creates disturbance, and such a weapon brings trouble without effort. (2-51-10)
अनर्थमर्थं मन्यसे राजपुत्र; सङ्ग्रन्थनं कलहस्यातिघोरम्। तद्वै प्रवृत्तं तु यथा कथं चि; द्विमोक्षयेच्चाप्यसिसायकांश्च ॥२-५१-११॥
anartham arthaṃ manyase rājaputra; saṅgranthanaṃ kalahasyātighoram। tad vai pravṛttaṃ tu yathā kathaṃ ci; dvimokṣaye cāpy asisāyakāṃś ca ॥2-51-11॥
[अनर्थम् (anartham) - non-meaning; अर्थम् (artham) - meaning; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; राजपुत्र (rājaputra) - O prince; सङ्ग्रन्थनम् (saṅgranthanam) - binding together; कलहस्य (kalahasya) - of conflict; अतिघोरम् (atighoram) - very terrible; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रवृत्तम् (pravṛttam) - has arisen; तु (tu) - but; यथा (yathā) - as; कथं चित् (kathaṃ cit) - somehow; द्वि (dvi) - two; मोक्षये (mokṣaye) - I will release; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; असि (asi) - sword; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows; च (ca) - and;]
(You consider non-meaning as meaning, O prince; the binding together of conflict is very terrible. That indeed has arisen, but as it is, somehow, I will release both the sword and the arrows also. (2-51-11))
O prince, you mistake what is not meaningful for what is meaningful; the entanglement of conflict is extremely dreadful. Now that it has arisen, in whatever way possible, I will release both the sword and the arrows as well. (2-51-11)

द्यूते पुराणैर्व्यवहारः प्रणीत; स्तत्रात्ययो नास्ति न सम्प्रहारः। तद्रोचतां शकुनेर्वाक्यमद्य; सभां क्षिप्रं त्वमिहाज्ञापयस्व ॥२-५१-१२॥
dyūte purāṇairvyavahāraḥ praṇīta; statrātyayo nāsti na samprahāraḥ. tadrocatāṃ śakunervākyamadya; sabhāṃ kṣipraṃ tvamihājñāpayasva ॥2-51-12॥

(In gambling, the procedure has been established by the ancients; there, indeed, there is no danger, nor is there conflict. Let the speech of Śakuni be pleasing today; you quickly command the assembly here. "(2-51-12)")

स्वर्गद्वारं दीव्यतां नो विशिष्टं; तद्वर्तिनां चापि तथैव युक्तम्। भवेदेवं ह्यात्मना तुल्यमेव; दुरोदरं पाण्डवैस्त्वं कुरुष्व ॥२-५१-१३॥
svargadvāraṃ dīvyatāṃ no viśiṣṭaṃ; tadvartināṃ cāpi tathaiva yuktam। bhavedevaṃ hyātmanā tulyameva; durodaraṃ pāṇḍavaistvaṃ kuruṣva ॥2-51-13॥
[स्वर्गद्वारम् (svargadvāram) - heaven-gate; दीव्यताम् (dīvyatām) - to be enjoyed; नः (naḥ) - by us; विशिष्टम् (viśiṣṭam) - distinguished; तद्वर्तिनाम् (tadvartinām) - of those following that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; एवम् (evam) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by oneself; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; एव (eva) - only; दुरोदरम् (durodaram) - Duryodhana; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do;]
(Heaven-gate to be enjoyed by us is distinguished; for those following that also in the same way it is proper. Thus indeed by oneself only equal; Duryodhana, by the Pāṇḍavas, you do.)
The gate to heaven, which is to be enjoyed by us, is special; it is equally proper for those who follow that path. Thus, by your own self, act equally, Duryodhana, as the Pāṇḍavas do. (2-51-13)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

वाक्यं न मे रोचते यत्त्वयोक्तं; यत्ते प्रियं तत्क्रियतां नरेन्द्र। पश्चात्तप्स्यसे तदुपाक्रम्य वाक्यं; न हीदृशं भावि वचो हि धर्म्यम् ॥२-५१-१४॥
vākyaṃ na me rocate yattvayoktaṃ; yatte priyaṃ tatkriyatāṃ narendra. paścāttapsyase tadupākramya vākyaṃ; na hīdṛśaṃ bhāvi vaco hi dharmyam ॥2-51-14॥
[वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; रोचते (rocate) - pleases; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - to you; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; तत् (tat) - that; क्रियतां (kriyatāṃ) - let it be done; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; तप्स्यसे (tapsyase) - you will regret; तत् (tat) - that; उपाक्रम्य (upākramya) - having undertaken; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ईदृशं (īdṛśaṃ) - such; भावि (bhāvi) - to be; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous;]
(Speech does not please me which has been spoken by you; whatever is dear to you, let that be done, O king. Afterwards you will regret, having undertaken that speech; for indeed, such a word is not righteous.)
The words you have spoken do not please me; do what you find pleasing, O king. But after acting on those words, you will regret it, for such speech is not truly righteous. (2-51-14)
दृष्टं ह्येतद्विदुरेणैवमेव; सर्वं पूर्वं बुद्धिविद्यानुगेन। तदेवैतदवशस्याभ्युपैति; महद्भयं क्षत्रियबीजघाति ॥२-५१-१५॥
dṛṣṭaṃ hy etad vidureṇaiva meva; sarvaṃ pūrvaṃ buddhividyānugenā. tadevaitad avaśasyābhyupaiti; mahad bhayaṃ kṣatriya-bīja-ghāti ॥2-51-15॥
[दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; एव (eva) - only; मेव (meva) - thus; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; अनुगेन (anugenā) - by following; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - only; एतत् (etat) - this; अवशस्य (avaśasya) - of the helpless; अभ्युपैति (abhyupaiti) - approaches; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; क्षत्रिय (kṣatriya) - of the warrior; बीज (bīja) - seed; घाति (ghāti) - destroyer;]
(This indeed has been seen by Vidura only thus; all this before, by intellect and knowledge following. That very thing approaches the helpless; great fear, destroyer of the seed of the warrior.)
This has indeed been seen by Vidura in this very way; all this was previously understood by following intellect and knowledge. That very thing now befalls the helpless—great fear, the destroyer of the seed of the Kṣatriyas. (2-51-15)

evam-uktvā dhṛtarāṣṭro manīṣī; daivaṃ matvā paramaṃ dustaraṃ ca। śaśāsoccaiḥ puruṣān putra-vākye; sthito rājā daiva-saṃmūḍha-cetāḥ ॥2-51-16॥

(Thus having spoken, Dhritarashtra, the wise one, having considered fate as supreme and difficult to cross, ruled men with authority according to his son's words, being the king whose mind was deluded by fate.)
Having thus spoken, Dhritarashtra, the wise king, considering fate to be supreme and insurmountable, ruled his men with authority according to his son's words, his mind bewildered by destiny. (2-51-16)
सहस्रस्तम्भां हेमवैडूर्यचित्रां; शतद्वारां तोरणस्फाटिशृङ्गाम्। सभामग्र्यां क्रोशमात्रायतां मे; तद्विस्तारामाशु कुर्वन्तु युक्ताः ॥२-५१-१७॥
sahasrastambhāṃ hemavaiḍūryacitrāṃ; śatadvārāṃ toraṇasphāṭiśṛṅgām. sabhām agryāṃ krośamātrāyatāṃ me; tad vistārām āśu kurvantu yuktāḥ ॥2-51-17॥
[सहस्रस्तम्भाम् (sahasrastambhām) - with a thousand pillars; हेमवैडूर्यचित्राम् (hemavaiḍūryacitrām) - adorned with gold and beryl; शतद्वाराम् (śatadvārām) - with a hundred gates; तोरणस्फाटिशृङ्गाम् (toraṇasphāṭiśṛṅgām) - with archways and crystal pinnacles; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; अग्र्याम् (agryām) - excellent; क्रोशमात्रायताम् (krośamātrāyatām) - one krośa in length; मे (me) - for me; तत् (tat) - that; विस्ताराम् (vistārām) - expanse; आशु (āśu) - quickly; कुर्वन्तु (kurvantu) - let them make; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged;]
(Let them, being engaged, quickly make for me an excellent assembly hall, with a thousand pillars, adorned with gold and beryl, with a hundred gates, with archways and crystal pinnacles, one krośa in length, with that expanse.)
Let them quickly construct for me an excellent assembly hall, adorned with gold and beryl, with a thousand pillars, a hundred gates, archways and crystal pinnacles, extending one krośa in length and of such expanse, by those engaged. (2-51-17)
श्रुत्वा तस्य त्वरिता निर्विशङ्काः; प्राज्ञा दक्षास्तां तथा चक्रुराशु। सर्वद्रव्याण्युपजह्रुः सभायां; सहस्रशः शिल्पिनश्चापि युक्ताः ॥२-५१-१८॥
śrutvā tasya tvaritā nirviśaṅkāḥ; prājñā dakṣāstāṃ tathā cakrurāśu. sarvadravyāṇyupajahruḥ sabhāyāṃ; sahasraśaḥ śilpinaścāpi yuktāḥ ॥2-51-18॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तस्य (tasya) - his; त्वरिता (tvaritāḥ) - swift; निर्विशङ्काः (nirviśaṅkāḥ) - without hesitation; प्राज्ञा (prājñāḥ) - wise; दक्षाः (dakṣāḥ) - skilled; ताम् (tām) - that (task); तथा (tathā) - thus; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - did; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सर्वद्रव्याणि (sarvadravyāṇi) - all materials; उपजह्रुः (upajahruḥ) - brought; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - to the assembly; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; शिल्पिनः (śilpinaḥ) - artisans; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged;]
(Having heard his (words), the swift and unhesitating wise and skilled (men) did that (task) thus quickly. All materials were brought to the assembly by thousands of artisans, also engaged.)
Hearing his words, the wise and skilled men, swift and without hesitation, quickly did as instructed. Thousands of engaged artisans also brought all the materials to the assembly. (2-51-18)
कालेनाल्पेनाथ निष्ठां गतां तां; सभां रम्यां बहुरत्नां विचित्राम्। चित्रैर्हैमैरासनैरभ्युपेता; माचख्युस्ते तस्य राज्ञः प्रतीताः ॥२-५१-१९॥
kālenālpenātha niṣṭhāṃ gatāṃ tāṃ; sabhāṃ ramyāṃ bahuratnāṃ vicitrām. citrair haimair āsanair abhyupetā; mācakhyus te tasya rājñaḥ pratītāḥ ॥2-51-19॥
[कालेन (kālena) - by time; अल्पेन (alpena) - by little (short); अथ (atha) - then; निष्ठाम् (niṣṭhām) - completion; गताम् (gatām) - attained; ताम् (tām) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; रम्याम् (ramyām) - beautiful; बहुरत्नाम् (bahuratnām) - abounding in many jewels; विचित्राम् (vicitrām) - variegated; चित्रैः (citraiḥ) - with various; हैमैः (haimaiḥ) - golden; आसनैः (āsanaiḥ) - seats; अभ्युपेता (abhyupetā) - furnished; माचख्युः (mācakhyuḥ) - described; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; प्रतीताः (pratītāḥ) - well-known;]
(By a little time then, that completion attained; that beautiful, many-jeweled, variegated assembly, furnished with various golden seats; they described as well-known to that king.)
In a short time, that splendid, jewel-adorned and variegated assembly hall, furnished with various golden seats, was completed; it was described as well-known to that king. (2-51-19)
ततो विद्वान्विदुरं मन्त्रिमुख्य; मुवाचेदं धृतराष्ट्रो नरेन्द्रः। युधिष्ठिरं राजपुत्रं हि गत्वा; मद्वाक्येन क्षिप्रमिहानयस्व ॥२-५१-२०॥
tato vidvān viduraṃ mantrimukhya; uvāca idaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ narendraḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ rājaputraṃ hi gatvā; madvākyena kṣipram iha ānayasva ॥2-51-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise one; विदुरं (viduraṃ) - Vidura; मन्त्रिमुख्य (mantrimukhya) - chief among ministers; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - king; युधिष्ठिरं (yudhiṣṭhiraṃ) - Yudhishthira; राजपुत्रं (rājaputraṃ) - prince; हि (hi) - indeed; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; मद्वाक्येन (madvākyena) - by my words; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; इह (iha) - here; आनयस्व (ānayasva) - bring;]
(Then the wise Vidura, chief among ministers, Dhritarashtra the king said this: Having gone to Yudhishthira the prince, indeed, by my words, quickly bring him here.)
Then King Dhritarashtra, addressing the wise Vidura, chief among ministers, said: "Go to Yudhishthira, the prince, and quickly bring him here at my command." (2-51-20)
सभेयं मे बहुरत्ना विचित्रा; शय्यासनैरुपपन्ना महार्हैः। सा दृश्यतां भ्रातृभिः सार्धमेत्य; सुहृद्द्यूतं वर्ततामत्र चेति ॥२-५१-२१॥
sabheyaṃ me bahuratnā vicitrā; śayyāsanairupapannā mahārhaiḥ. sā dṛśyatāṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhametya; suhṛddyūtaṃ vartatāmatra ceti ॥2-51-21॥
[सभेयं (sabheyaṃ) - this assembly; मे (me) - my; बहुरत्ना (bahuratnā) - abounding in many jewels; विचित्रा (vicitrā) - variegated; शय्या (śayyā) - beds; आसनैः (āsanaiḥ) - with seats; उपपन्ना (upapannā) - furnished; महार्हैः (mahārhaiḥ) - very costly; सा (sā) - she; दृश्यताम् (dṛśyatām) - let be seen; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; एत्य (etya) - having come; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; वर्तताम् (vartatām) - let take place; अत्र (atra) - here; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus;]
(This assembly of mine, abounding in many jewels, variegated, furnished with very costly beds and seats; let her be seen, having come together with the brothers; let the friendly dice-game take place here thus.)
"Let this assembly of mine, adorned with many jewels and splendidly furnished with costly beds and seats, be seen. Let the friendly game of dice take place here, together with the brothers." (2-51-21)
मतमाज्ञाय पुत्रस्य धृतराष्ट्रो नराधिपः। मत्वा च दुस्तरं दैवमेतद्राजा चकार ह ॥२-५१-२२॥
matam ājñāya putrasya dhṛtarāṣṭro narādhipaḥ| matvā ca dustaraṃ daivam etad rājā cakāra ha ||2-51-22||
[मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; च (ca) - and; दुस्तरम् (dustaram) - difficult to cross; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एतत् (etat) - this; राजा (rājā) - the king; चकार (cakāra) - did; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having understood the opinion of his son, Dhritarashtra the king, having considered this fate as difficult to cross, indeed did (so).)
Having understood his son's opinion, King Dhritarashtra, considering this fate to be insurmountable, acted accordingly. (2-51-22)
अन्यायेन तथोक्तस्तु विदुरो विदुषां वरः। नाभ्यनन्दद्वचो भ्रातुर्वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥२-५१-२३॥
anyāyena tathoktastu viduro viduṣāṃ varaḥ। nābhyanandad vaco bhrātur vacanaṃ cedam abravīt ॥2-51-23॥
[अन्यायेन (anyāyena) - by injustice; by unfair means; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; addressed; तु (tu) - but; however; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; (the wise minister); विदुषां (viduṣām) - of the wise; of learned men; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; the foremost; न (na) - not; अभ्यनन्दत् (abhyanandat) - approved; welcomed; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; utterance; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke;]
(But Vidura, the foremost of the wise, having thus been addressed by injustice, did not approve the words of his brother, and he spoke this statement.)
But Vidura, the wisest among the learned, when thus addressed unjustly, did not approve his brother's words and spoke as follows. (2-51-23)
नाभिनन्दामि नृपते प्रैषमेतं; मैवं कृथाः कुलनाशाद्बिभेमि। पुत्रैर्भिन्नैः कलहस्ते ध्रुवं स्या; देतच्छङ्के द्यूतकृते नरेन्द्र ॥२-५१-२४॥
nābhinandāmi nṛpate praiṣametaṃ; maivaṃ kṛthāḥ kulanāśādbibhemi. putrairbhinnaiḥ kalahaste dhruvaṃ syā; detacchaṅke dyūtakṛte narendra ॥2-51-24॥
[न (na) - not; अभिनन्दामि (abhinandāmi) - I approve; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; प्रैषम् (praiṣam) - this sending; एतं (etaṃ) - this; म (ma) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - do; कुलनाशात् (kulanāśāt) - from destruction of the family; बिभेमि (bibhemi) - I fear; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; भिन्नैः (bhinnaiḥ) - divided; कलहस्ते (kalahaste) - in quarrel; ध्रुवं (dhruvaṃ) - certainly; स्यात् (syāt) - will be; एतत् (etat) - this; शङ्के (śaṅke) - I suspect; द्यूतकृते (dyūtakṛte) - for the sake of gambling; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king;]
(Not I approve, O king, this sending; do not thus; from destruction of the family I fear. By sons divided in quarrel certainly will be; this I suspect for the sake of gambling, O king.)
O king, I do not approve of this sending; do not act thus. I fear the destruction of the family. When sons are divided, there will certainly be quarrel; I suspect this will happen because of gambling, O king. (2-51-24)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
[धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; (name of the king; literally: 'one who holds the kingdom') उवाच (uvāca) - said; (from the root 'vac' - to speak;);]

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said.
नेह क्षत्तः कलहस्तप्स्यते मां; न चेद्दैवं प्रतिलोमं भविष्यत्। धात्रा तु दिष्टस्य वशे किलेदं; सर्वं जगच्चेष्टति न स्वतन्त्रम् ॥२-५१-२५॥
neha kṣattaḥ kalahastapsyate māṃ; na ceddai̱vaṃ pratilomaṃ bhaviṣyat। dhātrā tu diṣṭasya vaśe kiledaṃ; sarvaṃ jagacceṣṭati na svatantram ॥2-51-25॥
[नेह (neha) - here; in this matter; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - O charioteer; कलहः (kalahah) - conflict; quarrel; तप्स्यते (tapsyate) - will afflict; will torment; मां (māṃ) - me; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; destiny; प्रतिलोमम् (pratilomam) - contrary; adverse; भविष्यत् (bhaviṣyat) - will be; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the creator; by the ordainer; तु (tu) - but; दिष्टस्य (diṣṭasya) - of what is ordained; of fate; वशे (vaśe) - under the control; किल (kil) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; जगत् (jagat) - the world; चेष्टति (ceṣṭati) - acts; moves; न (na) - not; स्वतन्त्रम् (svatantram) - independent;]
(Here, O charioteer, conflict will not afflict me; unless fate becomes adverse. But indeed, by the ordainer, under the control of what is ordained, this—all the world acts, not independently. (2-51-25))
Here, O charioteer, conflict will not trouble me unless fate turns adverse. But truly, by the ordainer, everything in this world acts under the control of destiny and not independently. (2-51-25)
तदद्य विदुर प्राप्य राजानं मम शासनात्। क्षिप्रमानय दुर्धर्षं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२-५१-२६॥
tad adya vidura prāpya rājānaṃ mama śāsanāt। kṣipram ānaya durdharṣaṃ kuntī-putraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥2-51-26॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; विदुर (vidura) - Vidura; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having approached; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; मम (mama) - my; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by command; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आनय (ānaya) - bring; दुर्धर्षम् (durdharṣam) - unconquerable; कुन्तीपुत्रम् (kuntī-putram) - Kunti's son; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(That today, Vidura, having approached the king by my command, quickly bring the unconquerable Kunti's son Yudhishthira.)
Therefore today, Vidura, go to the king at my command and quickly bring the unconquerable Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti. (2-51-26)
