Pancharatra: Inspite of Dritarastra’s advice Duryodhana is adamant.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said.
त्वं वै ज्येष्ठो ज्यैष्ठिनेयः पुत्र मा पाण्डवान्द्विषः। द्वेष्टा ह्यसुखमादत्ते यथैव निधनं तथा ॥२-५०-१॥
tvaṃ vai jyeṣṭho jyaiṣṭhineyaḥ putra mā pāṇḍavāndviṣaḥ। dveṣṭā hyasukhamādatte yathaiva nidhanaṃ tathā ॥2-50-1॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वै (vai) - indeed; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; ज्यैष्ठिनेयः (jyaiṣṭhineyaḥ) - son of the eldest; पुत्र (putra) - son; मा (mā) - do not; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; द्विषः (dviṣaḥ) - hate; द्वेष्टा (dveṣṭā) - one who hates; हि (hi) - indeed; असुखम् (asukham) - unhappiness; आदत्ते (ādatte) - obtains; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; निधनम् (nidhanam) - destruction; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(You indeed are the eldest, son of the eldest, O son, do not hate the Pāṇḍavas. One who hates indeed obtains unhappiness, just as (he obtains) destruction, so (he obtains unhappiness).)
You are truly the eldest, born of the eldest, my son; do not hate the Pāṇḍavas. For one who harbors hatred only gains misery, just as he would gain his own ruin. (2-50-1)
अव्युत्पन्नं समानार्थं तुल्यमित्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। अद्विषन्तं कथं द्विष्यात्त्वादृशो भरतर्षभ ॥२-५०-२॥
avyutpannaṃ samānārthaṃ tulyamitraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। adviṣantaṃ kathaṃ dviṣyāttvādṛśo bharatarṣabha ॥2-50-2॥
[अव्युत्पन्नं (avyutpannam) - not-derived; not-developed; समानार्थं (samānārtham) - having the same meaning; तुल्यमित्रं (tulyamitram) - having equal friends; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; अद्विषन्तं (adviṣantam) - not hating; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; द्विष्यात् (dviṣyāt) - could hate; त्वादृशः (tvādṛśaḥ) - one like you; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Not-derived, having the same meaning, having equal friends, Yudhishthira, not hating—how could one like you, bull among the Bharatas, hate?)
O bull among the Bharatas, how could someone like you, who is not prejudiced, who treats all equally, and who does not hate, ever hate Yudhishthira, who is of equal friendship and meaning? (2-50-2)
तुल्याभिजनवीर्यश्च कथं भ्रातुः श्रियं नृप। पुत्र कामयसे मोहान्मैवं भूः शाम्य साध्विह ॥२-५०-३॥
tulyābhijanavīryaś ca kathaṃ bhrātuḥ śriyaṃ nṛpa। putra kāmayase mohān maivaṃ bhūḥ śāmya sādhviha ॥2-50-3॥
[तुल्य (tulya) - equal; अभिजन (abhijana) - noble birth; वीर्य (vīrya) - strength; श्च (ś ca) - and; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of brother; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; पुत्र (putra) - son; कामयसे (kāmayase) - you desire; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; म (ma) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भूः (bhūḥ) - be; शाम्य (śāmya) - calm down; साधु (sādhu) - O good one; इह (iha) - here;]
(Equal in noble birth and strength and how (can you desire) your brother's prosperity, O king? Son, you desire (this) out of delusion; do not be thus, calm down, O good one, here.)
O king, being equal in noble birth and strength, how can you desire your brother's prosperity? Son, you desire this out of delusion; do not be so, calm yourself, O good one, here. (2-50-3)
अथ यज्ञविभूतिं तां काङ्क्षसे भरतर्षभ। ऋत्विजस्तव तन्वन्तु सप्ततन्तुं महाध्वरम् ॥२-५०-४॥
atha yajñavibhūtiṃ tāṃ kāṅkṣase bharatarṣabha। ṛtvijas tava tanvantu saptatantuṃ mahādhvaram ॥2-50-4॥
[अथ (atha) - now; यज्ञविभूतिम् (yajñavibhūtim) - sacrifice-glory; ताम् (tām) - that; काङ्क्षसे (kāṅkṣase) - you desire; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; ऋत्विजः (ṛtvijaḥ) - priests; तव (tava) - your; तन्वन्तु (tanvantu) - may they extend; सप्ततन्तुम् (saptatantum) - seven-threaded; महाध्वरम् (mahādhvaram) - great-sacrifice;]
(Now, the glory of sacrifice, that you desire, O bull among the Bharatas. May your priests extend the seven-threaded great sacrifice.)
O foremost of the Bharatas, since you desire that glory of sacrifice, may your priests extend the great sacrifice with its seven threads. (2-50-4)
आहरिष्यन्ति राजानस्तवापि विपुलं धनम्। प्रीत्या च बहुमानाच्च रत्नान्याभरणानि च ॥२-५०-५॥
āhariṣyanti rājānas tavāpi vipulaṃ dhanam। prītyā ca bahumānaāc ca ratnāny ābharaṇāni ca ॥2-50-5॥
[आहरिष्यन्ति (āhariṣyanti) - will bring; (from root hṛ, to carry, with ā, to bring) राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; विपुलम् (vipulam) - abundant; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; च (ca) - and; बहुमानात् (bahumānaāt) - out of respect; च (ca) - and; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; च (ca) - and;]
(The kings will bring your abundant wealth also, with affection and out of respect, and gems and ornaments.)
The kings will also bring you abundant wealth, as well as gems and ornaments, out of affection and respect. (2-50-5)
अनर्थाचरितं तात परस्वस्पृहणं भृशम्। स्वसन्तुष्टः स्वधर्मस्थो यः स वै सुखमेधते ॥२-५०-६॥
anarthācaritaṃ tāta parasvaspṛhaṇaṃ bhṛśam। svasantuṣṭaḥ svadharmastho yaḥ sa vai sukhamedhate ॥2-50-6॥
[अनर्थ (anartha) - misfortune; अचरितं (acaritaṃ) - performed; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पर (para) - others'; स्व (sva) - own; स्पृहणं (spṛhaṇam) - desiring; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; स्व (sva) - own; सन्तुष्टः (santuṣṭaḥ) - content; स्व (sva) - own; धर्म (dharma) - duty; स्थः (sthaḥ) - abiding; यः (yaḥ) - who; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एधते (edhate) - attains;]
(Misfortune performed, O dear one, excessive desire for others' possessions; he who is content with his own and abides in his own duty, indeed, attains happiness.)
O dear one, excessive desire for others' possessions is a cause of misfortune; he who is content with his own and abides in his own duty truly attains happiness. (2-50-6)
अव्यापारः परार्थेषु नित्योद्योगः स्वकर्मसु। उद्यमो रक्षणे स्वेषामेतद्वैभवलक्षणम् ॥२-५०-७॥
avyāpāraḥ parārtheṣu nityodyogaḥ svakarmasu। udyamo rakṣaṇe sveṣāmetadvaibhavalakṣaṇam ॥2-50-7॥
[अव्यापारः (avyāpāraḥ) - absence of activity; परार्थेषु (parārtheṣu) - in others' matters; नित्य (nitya) - constant; उद्योगः (udyogaḥ) - effort; स्वकर्मसु (svakarmasu) - in one's own duties; उद्यमः (udyamaḥ) - endeavor; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; स्वेषाम् (sveṣām) - of one's own; एतत् (etat) - this; वैभव (vaibhava) - prosperity; लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - characteristic;]
(Absence of activity in others' matters, constant effort in one's own duties, endeavor in protection of one's own—this is the characteristic of prosperity.)
Not interfering in others' affairs, always striving in one's own duties, and being diligent in protecting one's own—these are the marks of prosperity. (2-50-7)
विपत्तिष्वव्यथो दक्षो नित्यमुत्थानवान्नरः। अप्रमत्तो विनीतात्मा नित्यं भद्राणि पश्यति ॥२-५०-८॥
vipattiṣvavyatho dakṣo nityamutthānavānnaraḥ। apramatto vinītātmā nityaṃ bhadrāṇi paśyati ॥2-50-8॥
[विपत्तिषु (vipattiṣu) - in adversities; अव्यथः (avyathaḥ) - unperturbed; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - capable; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उत्थानवान् (utthānavān) - energetic; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - vigilant; विनीतात्मा (vinītātmā) - self-disciplined; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; भद्राणि (bhadrāṇi) - auspicious things; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(In adversities, the man who is unperturbed, capable, always energetic, vigilant, and self-disciplined always sees auspicious things.)
A man who remains unshaken in adversity, is capable, ever energetic, vigilant, and self-controlled, always perceives good things. (2-50-8)
अन्तर्वेद्यां ददद्वित्तं कामाननुभवन्प्रियान्। क्रीडन्स्त्रीभिर्निरातङ्कः प्रशाम्य भरतर्षभ ॥२-५०-९॥
antarvedyāṃ dadadvittaṃ kāmānanubhavānpriyān। krīḍanstrībhirnirātaṅkaḥ praśāmya bharatarṣabha ॥2-50-9॥
[अन्तर्वेद्यां (antarvedyām) - in the inner sacrificial hall; ददत् (dadat) - giving; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; अनुभवन् (anubhavān) - enjoying; प्रियान् (priyān) - pleasures; क्रीडन् (krīḍan) - sporting; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - with women; निरातङ्कः (nirātaṅkaḥ) - free from danger; प्रशाम्य (praśāmya) - having become calm; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(In the inner sacrificial hall, giving wealth, enjoying desired pleasures, sporting with women, free from danger, having become calm, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, having distributed wealth in the inner sacrificial hall, enjoying desired pleasures, sporting with women, and being free from danger, he became calm. (2-50-9)

जानन्वै मोहयसि मां नावि नौरिव संयता। स्वार्थे किं नावधानं ते उताहो द्वेष्टि मां भवान् ॥२-५०-१०॥
jānan vai mohayasi māṃ nāvi naur iva saṃyatā। svārthe kiṃ nāvadhānaṃ te utāho dveṣṭi māṃ bhavān ॥2-50-10॥
[जानन् (jānan) - knowing; वै (vai) - indeed; मोहयसि (mohayasi) - you bewilder; माम् (mām) - me; नावि (nāvi) - in a boat; नौः (nauḥ) - a boat; इव (iva) - like; संयता (saṃyatā) - restrained; स्वार्थे (svārthe) - for one's own purpose; किम् (kim) - what; नावधानम् (nāvadhānam) - not attention; ते (te) - your; उत (uta) - or; आहो (āho) - or rather; द्वेष्टि (dveṣṭi) - he hates; माम् (mām) - me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific);]
(Knowing indeed you bewilder me; in a boat, like a restrained boat; for one's own purpose, what, not attention, your; or, or rather, he hates me, you (honorific);)
Knowing, indeed, you bewilder me. Are you like a boat restrained in a boat, inattentive to your own purpose? Or is it that you hate me? (2-50-10)
न सन्तीमे धार्तराष्ट्रा येषां त्वमनुशासिता। भविष्यमर्थमाख्यासि सदा त्वं कृत्यमात्मनः ॥२-५०-११॥
na santīme dhārtarāṣṭrā yeṣāṃ tvamanuśāsitā। bhaviṣyamarthamākhyāsi sadā tvaṃ kṛtyamātmanaḥ ॥2-50-11॥
[न (na) - not; सन्ति (santi) - are; मे (me) - my; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुशासिता (anuśāsitā) - the instructor; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; आख्यासि (ākhyāsi) - you declare; सदा (sadā) - always; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कृत्यम् (kṛtyam) - duty; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself;]
(Not are my sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, of whom you are the instructor. You always declare the purpose, you (declare) the duty of oneself.)
My sons, the Dhṛtarāṣṭras, are not those whom you instruct. You always declare what is to be done and the purpose for oneself. (2-50-11)
परप्रणेयोऽग्रणीर्हि यश्च मार्गात्प्रमुह्यति। पन्थानमनुगच्छेयुः कथं तस्य पदानुगाः ॥२-५०-१२॥
parapraṇeyo'graṇīr hi yaś ca mārgāt pramuhyati। panthānam anugaccheyuḥ kathaṃ tasya padānugāḥ ॥2-50-12॥
[परप्रणेयः (parapraṇeyaḥ) - to be led by others; अग्रणीः (agraṇīḥ) - leader; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; मार्गात् (mārgāt) - from the path; प्रमुह्यति (pramuhyati) - becomes confused; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - the way; अनुगच्छेयुः (anugaccheyuḥ) - would follow; कथम् (katham) - how; तस्य (tasya) - his; पदानुगाः (padānugāḥ) - followers of the footsteps;]
(He who is to be led by others, the leader, indeed, who and from the path becomes confused, the way would follow, how his followers of the footsteps?)
If the leader himself, who is supposed to guide others, becomes confused and strays from the path, how can his followers walk in his footsteps? (2-50-12)
राजन्परिगतप्रज्ञो वृद्धसेवी जितेन्द्रियः। प्रतिपन्नान्स्वकार्येषु संमोहयसि नो भृशम् ॥२-५०-१३॥
rājan-parigata-prajñaḥ vṛddha-sevī jitendriyaḥ। pratipannān sva-kāryeṣu saṁmohayasi naḥ bhṛśam ॥2-50-13॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; परिगत (parigata) - fully attained; प्रज्ञः (prajñaḥ) - wisdom; वृद्धसेवी (vṛddha-sevī) - one who serves elders; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; प्रतिपन्नान् (pratipannān) - those engaged; स्वकार्येषु (sva-kāryeṣu) - in their own duties; संमोहयसि (saṁmohayasi) - you bewilder; नः (naḥ) - us; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(O king, possessing fully attained wisdom, serving elders, having conquered the senses, you greatly bewilder us who are engaged in our own duties.)
O king, though you possess complete wisdom, serve elders, and have mastered your senses, you greatly confuse us who are engaged in our own duties. (2-50-13)
लोकवृत्ताद्राजवृत्तमन्यदाह बृहस्पतिः। तस्माद्राज्ञा प्रयत्नेन स्वार्थश्चिन्त्यः सदैव हि ॥२-५०-१४॥
lokavṛttād rājavṛttam anyad āha bṛhaspatiḥ। tasmād rājñā prayatnena svārthaś cintyaḥ sadaiva hi ॥2-50-14॥
[लोकवृत्तात् (lokavṛttāt) - from the conduct of the people; राजवृत्तम् (rājavṛttam) - the conduct of the king; अन्यत् (anyat) - different; आह (āha) - said; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; स्वार्थः (svārthaḥ) - one's own interest; चिन्त्यः (cintyaḥ) - should be considered; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; हि (hi) - indeed;]
(Bṛhaspati said that the conduct of the king is different from the conduct of the people; therefore, the king should always consider his own interest with effort indeed.)
Bṛhaspati declared, "The king's conduct is distinct from that of the people; therefore, a king must always diligently consider his own interests." (2-50-14)
क्षत्रियस्य महाराज जये वृत्तिः समाहिता। स वै धर्मोऽस्त्वधर्मो वा स्ववृत्तौ भरतर्षभ ॥२-५०-१५॥
kṣatriyasya mahārāja jaye vṛttiḥ samāhitā। sa vai dharmo'stvadharmo vā svavṛttau bharatarṣabha ॥2-50-15॥
[क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of the kṣatriya; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जये (jaye) - in victory; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; समाहिता (samāhitā) - is established; सः (saḥ) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; वा (vā) - or; स्ववृत्तौ (svavṛttau) - in one's own conduct; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(O great king, for the kṣatriya, conduct is established in victory. That indeed is righteousness or unrighteousness; let it be so, O bull among the Bharatas, in one's own conduct.)
O great king, for a kṣatriya, conduct is centered on victory. Whether that is righteousness or unrighteousness, O bull among the Bharatas, let it be so in one's own conduct. (2-50-15)
प्रकालयेद्दिशः सर्वाः प्रतोदेनेव सारथिः। प्रत्यमित्रश्रियं दीप्तां बुभूषुर्भरतर्षभ ॥२-५०-१६॥
prakālayed diśaḥ sarvāḥ pratodena iva sārathiḥ। pratyamitra-śriyaṃ dīptāṃ bubhūṣuḥ bharata-ṛṣabha ॥2-50-16॥

O bull among the Bharatas, just as a charioteer urges all directions forward with a goad, so should one, desiring to obtain the radiant glory of the enemy, advance. (2-50-16)
प्रच्छन्नो वा प्रकाशो वा यो योगो रिपुबान्धनः। तद्वै शस्त्रं शस्त्रविदां न शस्त्रं छेदनं स्मृतम् ॥२-५०-१७॥
pracchanno vā prakāśo vā yo yogo ripubandhanaḥ। tadvai śastraṃ śastravidāṃ na śastraṃ chedanaṃ smṛtam ॥2-50-17॥
[प्रच्छन्नः (pracchannaḥ) - hidden; वा (vā) - or; प्रकाशः (prakāśaḥ) - manifest; वा (vā) - or; यः (yaḥ) - which; योगः (yogaḥ) - union; रिपु-बान्धनः (ripu-bandhanaḥ) - binding of enemies; तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; शस्त्र-विदाम् (śastra-vidām) - of those who know weapons; न (na) - not; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; छेदनम् (chedanam) - cutting; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is considered;]
(Hidden or manifest, whichever union is the binding of enemies, that indeed is the weapon of those who know weapons; not the weapon that is considered as cutting.)
Whether hidden or manifest, whatever union binds the enemy, that alone is truly the weapon for those skilled in arms; not the weapon that is merely for cutting. (2-50-17)
असन्तोषः श्रियो मूलं तस्मात्तं कामयाम्यहम्। समुच्छ्रये यो यतते स राजन्परमो नयी ॥२-५०-१८॥
asantoṣaḥ śriyo mūlaṃ tasmāttaṃ kāmayāmyaham। samucchraye yo yatate sa rājanparamo nayī ॥2-50-18॥
[असन्तोषः (asantoṣaḥ) - non-contentment; श्रियः (śriyaḥ) - of prosperity; मूलं (mūlam) - root; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तम् (tam) - that; कामयामि (kāmayāmi) - I desire; अहम् (aham) - I; समुच्छ्रये (samucchraye) - for advancement; यः (yaḥ) - who; यतते (yatate) - strives; सः (saḥ) - he; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; नयी (nayī) - leader;]
(Non-contentment is the root of prosperity; therefore, I desire that. For advancement, he who strives, O king, is the supreme leader.)

ममत्वं हि न कर्तव्यमैश्वर्ये वा धनेऽपि वा। पूर्वावाप्तं हरन्त्यन्ये राजधर्मं हि तं विदुः ॥२-५०-१९॥
mamatvaṃ hi na kartavyamaiśvarye vā dhane'pi vā। pūrvāvāptaṃ harantyanye rājadharmaṃ hi taṃ viduḥ ॥2-50-19॥
[ममत्वम् (mamatvam) - mineness; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; ऐश्वर्ये (aiśvarye) - in sovereignty; वा (vā) - or; धनेऽपि (dhane'pi) - in wealth also; वा (vā) - or; पूर्वावाप्तम् (pūrvāvāptam) - previously acquired; हरन्ति (haranti) - take away; अन्ये (anye) - others; राजधर्मम् (rājadharmaṃ) - kingly duty; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - that; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(Mineness indeed is not to be done in sovereignty or even in wealth; others take away what was previously acquired; indeed, they know that as kingly duty.)
One should not cultivate a sense of 'mineness' in sovereignty or even in wealth; for what has been previously acquired, others may take away—this, indeed, is known as the duty of kings. (2-50-19)
अद्रोहे समयं कृत्वा चिच्छेद नमुचेः शिरः। शक्रः सा हि मता तस्य रिपौ वृत्तिः सनातनी ॥२-५०-२०॥
adrohe samayaṃ kṛtvā ciccheda namuceḥ śiraḥ। śakraḥ sā hi matā tasya ripau vṛttiḥ sanātanī ॥2-50-20॥
[अद्रोहे (adrohe) - in non-injury; समयं (samayaṃ) - agreement; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - he cut off; नमुचेः (namuceḥ) - of Namuci; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); सा (sā) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; मता (matā) - is considered; तस्य (tasya) - his; रिपौ (ripau) - towards the enemy; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; सनातनी (sanātanī) - eternal;]
(In non-injury, having made an agreement, Śakra cut off the head of Namuci; that conduct towards the enemy is indeed considered his eternal (nature).)
Śakra (Indra), having made an agreement of non-injury, cut off Namuci's head; such conduct towards an enemy is indeed regarded as his eternal nature. (2-50-20)
द्वावेतौ ग्रसते भूमिः सर्पो बिलशयानिव। राजानं चाविरोद्धारं ब्राह्मणं चाप्रवासिनम् ॥२-५०-२१॥
dvāvetau grasate bhūmiḥ sarpo bilaśayāniva। rājānaṃ cāviroddhāraṃ brāhmaṇaṃ cāpravāsinam ॥2-50-21॥
[द्वौ (dvau) - two; एतौ (etau) - these; ग्रसते (grasate) - devours; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - serpent; बिलशयान् (bilaśayān) - dwelling in a hole; इव (iva) - like; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; च (ca) - and; अविरोद्धारम् (aviroddhāram) - one who is not opposed; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; अप्रवासिनम् (apravāsinam) - one who does not go abroad;]
(The earth devours these two: the king who is not opposed and the brāhmaṇa who does not go abroad, just as a serpent devours those dwelling in a hole.)
The earth consumes two types of people: a king who faces no opposition and a brāhmaṇa who does not travel, just as a serpent devours those who remain in their hole. (2-50-21)
नास्ति वै जातितः शत्रुः पुरुषस्य विशां पते। येन साधारणी वृत्तिः स शत्रुर्नेतरो जनः ॥२-५०-२२॥
nāsti vai jātitaḥ śatruḥ puruṣasya viśāṃ pate। yena sādhāraṇī vṛttiḥ sa śatrur netaro janaḥ ॥2-50-22॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; वै (vai) - indeed; जातितः (jātitaḥ) - by birth; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a person; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; येन (yena) - by whom; साधारणी (sādhāraṇī) - common; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; सः (saḥ) - he; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; न (na) - not; इतरः (itaraḥ) - other; जनः (janaḥ) - person;]
(There is indeed no enemy of a person by birth, O lord of men; he by whom common conduct is practiced, he is the enemy, not any other person.)
O lord of men, there is truly no enemy of a person by birth; the one whose conduct is common, he is the enemy, not any other person. (2-50-22)
शत्रुपक्षं समृध्यन्तं यो मोहात्समुपेक्षते। व्याधिराप्यायित इव तस्य मूलं छिनत्ति सः ॥२-५०-२३॥
śatrupakṣaṃ samṛdhyantaṃ yo mohātsamupekṣate| vyādhirāpyāyita iva tasya mūlaṃ chinatti saḥ ॥2-50-23॥
[शत्रुपक्षं (śatrupakṣam) - enemy's side; समृध्यन्तं (samṛdhyantam) - prospering; यः (yaḥ) - who; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; समुपेक्षते (samupekṣate) - overlooks; व्याधिः (vyādhiḥ) - disease; आप्यायितः (āpyāyitaḥ) - nourished; इव (iva) - like; तस्य (tasya) - his; मूलं (mūlam) - root; छिनत्ति (chinatti) - cuts; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(He who, out of delusion, overlooks the prospering enemy's side, like a nourished disease, he cuts his own root.)
He who, out of delusion, ignores the prospering enemy's side, is like one who nourishes a disease; he thereby destroys his own foundation. (2-50-23)
अल्पोऽपि ह्यरिरत्यन्तं वर्धमानपराक्रमः। वल्मीको मूलज इव ग्रसते वृक्षमन्तिकात् ॥२-५०-२४॥
alpo'pi hy arir atyantaṃ vardhamānaparākramaḥ। valmīko mūlaja iva grasate vṛkṣam antikāt ॥2-50-24॥
[अल्पः (alpaḥ) - small; insignificant; अपि (api) - even; also; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अरिः (ariḥ) - enemy; अत्यन्तम् (atyantam) - excessively; extremely; वर्धमानपराक्रमः (vardhamānaparākramaḥ) - increasing in valor; growing in strength; वल्मीको (valmīkaḥ) - ant-hill; मूलजः (mūlajaḥ) - root-born; coming from the root; इव (iva) - like; as; ग्रसते (grasate) - devours; consumes; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from nearby; from close by;]
(Even a small enemy, indeed, excessively increasing in valor, like a root-born ant-hill, devours a tree from nearby.)
Even a small enemy, if he is constantly growing in strength, can, like an ant-hill growing at the root, consume a tree from nearby. (2-50-24)
आजमीढ रिपोर्लक्ष्मीर्मा ते रोचिष्ट भारत। एष भारः सत्त्ववतां नयः शिरसि धिष्ठितः ॥२-५०-२५॥
ājamīḍha ripor lakṣmīḥ mā te rociṣṭa bhārata। eṣa bhāraḥ sattvavatāṃ nayaḥ śirasi dhiṣṭhitaḥ ॥2-50-25॥
[आजमीढ (ājamīḍha) - O descendant of Ajāmīḍha; रिपोः (ripoḥ) - of the enemy; लक्ष्मीः (lakṣmīḥ) - prosperity; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - to you; रोचिष्ट (rociṣṭa) - may it be pleasing; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; एष (eṣa) - this; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden; सत्त्ववताम् (sattvavatām) - of the strong; नयः (nayaḥ) - policy; शिरसि (śirasi) - on the head; धिष्ठितः (dhiṣṭhitaḥ) - established;]
(O descendant of Ajāmīḍha, may the prosperity of the enemy not be pleasing to you, O Bhārata. This burden, the policy of the strong, is established on the head.)
O descendant of Ajāmīḍha, O Bhārata, do not let the prosperity of the enemy please you. This burden, the policy of the strong, is to be borne with responsibility. (2-50-25)
जन्मवृद्धिमिवार्थानां यो वृद्धिमभिकाङ्क्षते। एधते ज्ञातिषु स वै सद्योवृद्धिर्हि विक्रमः ॥२-५०-२६॥
janmavṛddhim ivārthānāṃ yo vṛddhim abhikāṅkṣate। edhate jñātiṣu sa vai sadyovṛddhir hi vikramaḥ ॥2-50-26॥
[जन्म (janma) - birth; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - increase; इव (iva) - like; अर्थानाम् (arthānām) - of objects; यः (yaḥ) - who; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - increase; अभिकाङ्क्षते (abhikāṅkṣate) - desires; एधते (edhate) - prospers; ज्ञातिषु (jñātiṣu) - among relatives; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; सद्यःवृद्धिः (sadyovṛddhiḥ) - immediate increase; हि (hi) - for; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - effort;]
(He who desires the increase of objects just as the increase of birth, prospers among relatives; indeed, immediate increase is effort.)
He who seeks the growth of wealth as one seeks the growth of his own family prospers among his kin; for immediate advancement is truly the result of effort. (2-50-26)
नाप्राप्य पाण्डवैश्वर्यं संशयो मे भविष्यति। अवाप्स्ये वा श्रियं तां हि शेष्ये वा निहतो युधि ॥२-५०-२७॥
nāprāpya pāṇḍava-aiśvaryaṃ saṃśayo me bhaviṣyati। avāpsye vā śriyaṃ tāṃ hi śeṣye vā nihato yudhi॥2-50-27॥
[न (na) - not; अप्राप्य (aprāpya) - having not obtained; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - of the Pāṇḍavas; ऐश्वर्यं (aiśvaryam) - prosperity; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; मे (me) - to me; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will arise; अवाप्स्ये (avāpsye) - I shall obtain; वा (vā) - or; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; तां (tām) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; शेष्ये (śeṣye) - I shall remain; वा (vā) - or; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Not having obtained the Pāṇḍavas' prosperity, doubt will arise for me. I shall either obtain that prosperity, indeed, or I shall remain slain in battle.)
If I do not attain the prosperity of the Pāṇḍavas, doubt will arise in me. Either I shall gain that prosperity, or, indeed, I shall remain slain in battle. (2-50-27)
अतादृशस्य किं मेऽद्य जीवितेन विशां पते। वर्धन्ते पाण्डवा नित्यं वयं तु स्थिरवृद्धयः ॥२-५०-२८॥
atādṛśasya kiṃ me'dya jīvitena viśāṃ pate। vardhante pāṇḍavā nityaṃ vayaṃ tu sthiravṛddhayaḥ ॥2-50-28॥
[अतादृशस्य (atādṛśasya) - of such (a one as this); किं (kiṃ) - what; मे (me) - to me; अद्य (adya) - today; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; विशां (viśām) - of kings; पते (pate) - O lord; वर्धन्ते (vardhante) - prosper; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वयम् (vayam) - we; तु (tu) - but; स्थिरवृद्धयः (sthiravṛddhayaḥ) - steadily increasing;]
(Of such (a one as this), what to me today with life, O lord of kings? The Pāṇḍavas always prosper, but we are steadily increasing.)
O lord of kings, what is the use of my life today, when such is the case? The Pāṇḍavas are always prospering, but we only increase steadily. (2-50-28)
