tataḥ prāyād viduro'śvair udāraiḥ mahājavair balibhiḥ sādhu-dāntaiḥ. balāt niyukto dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā; manīṣiṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ sakāśam ॥2-52-1॥

स राजगृहमासाद्य कुबेरभवनोपमम्। अभ्यगच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२-५२-३॥

दुरोदरा विहिता ये तु तत्र; महात्मना धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा। तान्द्रक्ष्यसे कितवान्संनिविष्टा; नित्यागतोऽहं नृपते तज्जुषस्व ॥२-५२-९॥
durodarā vihitā ye tu tatra; mahātmanā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā. tāndrakṣyase kitavānsaṃniviṣṭā; nityāgato'haṃ nṛpate tajjuṣasva ॥2-52-9॥

jānāmyahaṃ dyūtamanarthamūlaṃ; kṛtaśca yatno'sya mayā nivāraṇe. rājā tu māṃ prāhiṇottvatsakāśaṃ; śrutvā vidvañśreya ihācarasva ॥2-52-11॥

(I know gambling is the root of misfortune; and effort was made by me for its prevention. But the king sent me to your presence; having heard, O learned one, act for welfare here. (2-52-11))

(Greatly-terrifying deceivers have assembled; with deceit and trickery, pretenders to divinity are here. But indeed, this is under the control of fate by the Creator; today, this is not un-divine, by those deceivers, to me.)
Terrifying deceivers have gathered here, employing trickery and pretending to be divine. Yet, all this is truly under the control of fate as ordained by the Creator; today, what happens to me is not outside the divine order, even though it is caused by those deceivers. (2-52-14)
नाहं राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासना; न्न गन्तुमिच्छामि कवे दुरोदरम्। इष्टो हि पुत्रस्य पिता सदैव; तदस्मि कर्ता विदुरात्थ मां यथा ॥२-५२-१५॥

दैवं प्रज्ञां तु मुष्णाति तेजश्चक्षुरिवापतत्। धातुश्च वशमन्वेति पाशैरिव नरः सितः ॥२-५२-१८॥
daivaṃ prajñāṃ tu muṣṇāti tejaś cakṣur ivāpatat। dhātuś ca vaśam anveti pāśair iva naraḥ sitaḥ ॥2-52-18॥

(Fate steals wisdom, but energy falls like the eye; and the bodily element follows control, like a man bound by fetters, being white (aged).)
Fate deprives a person of wisdom, just as energy leaves the eyes; and the bodily constitution comes under control, like an old man bound by fetters. (2-52-18)
इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा सह क्षत्त्रा युधिष्ठिरः। अमृष्यमाणस्तत्पार्थः समाह्वानमरिंदमः ॥२-५२-१९॥

Having spoken thus, King Yudhishthira departed with his charioteer. Unable to bear it, Arjuna, the son of Pritha and subduer of enemies, accepted the challenge. (2-52-19)
बाह्लिकेन रथं दत्तमास्थाय परवीरहा। परिच्छन्नो ययौ पार्थो भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवः ॥२-५२-२०॥
bāhlikena rathaṃ dattam āsthāya paravīrahā। paricchanno yayau pārtho bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ ॥2-52-20॥

समेत्य च महाबाहुः सोमदत्तेन चैव ह। दुर्योधनेन शल्येन सौबलेन च वीर्यवान् ॥२-५२-२४॥
sametya ca mahābāhuḥ somadattena caiva ha। duryodhanena śalyena saubalena ca vīryavān ॥2-52-24॥

ये चान्ये तत्र राजानः पूर्वमेव समागताः। जयद्रथेन च तथा कुरुभिश्चापि सर्वशः ॥२-५२-२५॥

अभिवाद्य स गान्धारीं तया च प्रतिनन्दितः। ददर्श पितरं वृद्धं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ॥२-५२-२८॥

विविशुस्तेऽभ्यनुज्ञाता रत्नवन्ति गृहाण्यथ। ददृशुश्चोपयातास्तान्द्रौपदीप्रमुखाः स्त्रियः ॥२-५२-३१॥
viviśus te'bhyanujñātā ratnavanti gṛhāṇy atha। dadṛśuś copayātās tān draupadī-pramukhāḥ striyaḥ ॥2-52-31॥

When the daughters-in-law of Dhṛtarāṣṭra saw the blazing great prosperity of the son of Yājñasena (Draupadī), they were not very pleased. (2-52-32)
ततस्ते पुरुषव्याघ्रा गत्वा स्त्रीभिस्तु संविदम्। कृत्वा व्यायामपूर्वाणि कृत्यानि प्रतिकर्म च ॥२-५२-३३॥
tataste puruṣavyāghrā gatvā strībhistu saṃvidam। kṛtvā vyāyāmapūrvāṇi kṛtyāni pratikarma ca ॥2-52-33॥

Then those tiger-like men, after going and making arrangements with the women, performed the preliminary exercises, duties, and counter-actions. (2-52-33)
ततः कृताह्निकाः सर्वे दिव्यचन्दनरूषिताः। कल्याणमनसश्चैव ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥२-५२-३४॥
tataḥ kṛtāhnikāḥ sarve divyacandanarūṣitāḥ। kalyāṇamanasaścaiva brāhmaṇānsvasti vācya ca ॥2-52-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृताह्निकाः (kṛtāhnikāḥ) - having performed daily rites; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दिव्यचन्दनरूषिताः (divyacandanarūṣitāḥ) - anointed with divine sandalwood; कल्याणमनसः (kalyāṇamanasaḥ) - with auspicious minds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; वाच्य (vācya) - should be spoken; च (ca) - and;]
(Then, all having performed the daily rites, anointed with divine sandalwood, with auspicious minds, indeed, to the Brāhmaṇas, well-being should be spoken, and.)
Then, after all had performed their daily rituals and were anointed with divine sandalwood, with auspicious minds, they were to offer words of well-being to the Brāhmaṇas. (2-52-34)
मनोज्ञमशनं भुक्त्वा विविशुः शरणान्यथ। उपगीयमाना नारीभिरस्वपन्कुरुनन्दनाः ॥२-५२-३५॥
manojñamaśanaṃ bhuktvā viviśuḥ śaraṇānyatha। upagīyamānā nārībhirasvapankurunandanāḥ ॥2-52-35॥
[मनोज्ञम् (manojñam) - pleasing to the mind; अशनम् (aśanam) - food; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; शरणानि (śaraṇāni) - shelters; अथ (atha) - then; उपगीयमाना (upagīyamānā) - being sung; नारीभिः (nārībhiḥ) - by women; अस्वपन् (asvapan) - slept; कुरुनन्दनाः (kurunandanāḥ) - descendants of Kuru;]
(Having eaten pleasing food, they then entered the shelters; being sung to by women, the descendants of Kuru slept.)
After enjoying delicious food, the Kurus entered their shelters; as the women sang to them, they fell asleep. (2-52-35)
जगाम तेषां सा रात्रिः पुण्या रतिविहारिणाम्। स्तूयमानाश्च विश्रान्ताः काले निद्रामथात्यजन् ॥२-५२-३६॥
jagāma teṣāṃ sā rātriḥ puṇyā rativihāriṇām। stūyamānāś ca viśrāntāḥ kāle nidrām athātyajan ॥2-52-36॥
[जगाम (jagāma) - departed; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; सा (sā) - that; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; पुण्या (puṇyā) - auspicious; रतिविहारिणाम् (rativihāriṇām) - of those who delight in pleasure; स्तूयमानाः (stūyamānāḥ) - being praised; च (ca) - and; विश्रान्ताः (viśrāntāḥ) - having rested; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; अथ (atha) - then; अत्यजन् (atyajan) - abandoned;]
(That auspicious night of those who delight in pleasure departed; being praised and having rested, at the proper time, then they abandoned sleep.)
That auspicious night for those who delighted in pleasure passed; praised and having rested, at the proper time, they then gave up sleep. (2-52-36)
सुखोषितास्तां रजनीं प्रातः सर्वे कृताह्निकाः। सभां रम्यां प्रविविशुः कितवैरभिसंवृताम् ॥२-५२-३७॥
sukhoṣitāstāṃ rajanīṃ prātaḥ sarve kṛtāhnikāḥ। sabhāṃ ramyāṃ praviviśuḥ kitavairabhisaṃvṛtām ॥2-52-37॥
[सुखोषिताः (sukhoṣitāḥ) - having spent the night happily; तां (tām) - that; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कृताह्निकाः (kṛtāhnikāḥ) - having performed the morning rituals; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; रम्याम् (ramyām) - beautiful; प्रविविशुः (praviviśuḥ) - entered; कितवैः (kitavaiḥ) - by gamblers; अभिसंवृताम् (abhisaṃvṛtām) - surrounded;]
(Having spent that night happily, in the morning, all having performed the morning rituals, entered the beautiful assembly hall surrounded by gamblers.)
After spending the night happily, in the morning, all of them, having completed their morning rituals, entered the beautiful assembly hall, which was surrounded by gamblers. (2-52-37)
