anujñātāṃstānviditvā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa dhīmatā। rājanduḥśāsanaḥ kṣipraṃ jagāma bhrātaraṃ prati ॥2-66-2॥

दुर्योधनं समासाद्य सामात्यं भरतर्षभ। दुःखार्तो भरतश्रेष्ठ इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२-६६-३॥
duryodhanaṃ samāsādya sāmātyaṃ bharatarṣabha। duḥkhārto bharataśreṣṭha idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥2-66-3॥

दुःखेनैतत्समानीतं स्थविरो नाशयत्यसौ। शत्रुसाद्गमयद्द्रव्यं तद्बुध्यध्वं महारथाः ॥२-६६-४॥
duḥkhenaitat-samānītaṃ sthaviro nāśayatyasau। śatrusādgamayad-dravyaṃ tadbudhyadhvaṃ mahārathāḥ ॥2-66-4॥
[दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by suffering; एतत् (etat) - this; समानीतम् (samānītam) - brought together; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - the old one; नाशयति (nāśayati) - destroys; असौ (asau) - he; शत्रु (śatru) - enemy; साद्गमयत् (sādgamayat) - having led to ruin; द्रव्यं (dravyaṃ) - wealth; तत् (tat) - that; बुध्यध्वं (budhyadhvaṃ) - know; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - O great chariot-warriors;]
(By suffering, this brought-together (wealth) the old one destroys; the enemy, having led the wealth to ruin, that know, O great chariot-warriors.)
O great chariot-warriors, know that the old one destroys this wealth, which has been brought together by suffering, and the enemy, having led the wealth to ruin. (2-66-4)
अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। मिथः सङ्गम्य सहिताः पाण्डवान्प्रति मानिनः ॥२-६६-५॥
atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ। mithaḥ saṅgamya sahitāḥ pāṇḍavān prati māninaḥ ॥2-66-5॥

(Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni also, the son of Subala, having mutually assembled together, towards the Pāṇḍavas, the proud ones.)
Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni, the son of Subala, having come together, proudly advanced towards the Pāṇḍavas. (2-66-5)
वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम्। अभिगम्य त्वरायुक्ताः श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥२-६६-६॥
vaicitravīryaṃ rājānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ manīṣiṇam। abhigamya tvarāyuktāḥ ślakṣṇaṃ vacanam abruvan ॥2-66-6॥

They quickly approached the wise king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, descendant of Vicitravīrya, and addressed him with gentle words. (2-66-6)

na tvayedam śrutaṃ rājanya j-jagāda bṛhaspatiḥ। śakrasya nītiṃ pravadān vidvān deva-purohitaḥ ॥2-66-7॥

(Not by you this heard, O king, which spoke Bṛhaspati, of Śakra the policy expounding, the learned one, the priest of the gods.)
O king, this has not been heard by you, which Bṛhaspati, the learned priest of the gods, spoke while expounding the policy of Śakra. (2-66-7)
सर्वोपायैर्निहन्तव्याः शत्रवः शत्रुकर्षण। पुरा युद्धाद्बलाद्वापि प्रकुर्वन्ति तवाहितम् ॥२-६६-८॥
sarvopāyairnihantavyāḥ śatravaḥ śatrukarṣaṇa. purā yuddhādbalādvāpi prakurvanti tavāhitam ॥2-66-8॥
[सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; निहन्तव्याः (nihantavyāḥ) - are to be destroyed; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; शत्रुकर्षण (śatrukarṣaṇa) - O subduer of enemies; पुरा (purā) - before; युद्धात् (yuddhāt) - from battle; बलात् (balāt) - by force; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; प्रकुर्वन्ति (prakurvanti) - they do; तव (tava) - to you; अहितम् (ahitam) - harm;]
(By all means, enemies are to be destroyed, O subduer of enemies. Before the battle, even by force or otherwise, they do harm to you.)
O subduer of enemies, enemies must be destroyed by all means. Before the battle, they may cause you harm by force or by other means. (2-66-8)
ते वयं पाण्डवधनैः सर्वान्सम्पूज्य पार्थिवान्। यदि तान्योधयिष्यामः किं वा नः परिहास्यति ॥२-६६-९॥
te vayaṃ pāṇḍavadhanaīḥ sarvānsampūjya pārthivān। yadi tānyodhayiṣyāmaḥ kiṃ vā naḥ parihāsyati ॥2-66-9॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; पाण्डवधनैः (pāṇḍavadhanaīḥ) - by the wealth of the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honored; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; यदि (yadi) - if; तान् (tān) - them; योधयिष्यामः (yodhayiṣyāmaḥ) - we will fight; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; नः (naḥ) - to us; परिहास्यति (parihāsyati) - will ridicule;]
(They, we, by the wealth of the Pāṇḍavas, all having honored the kings. If we fight them, what or to us will ridicule.)
We, having honored all the kings with the wealth of the Pāṇḍavas, if we fight them, what ridicule will come to us? (2-66-9)
अहीनाशीविषान्क्रुद्धान्दंशाय समुपस्थितान्। कृत्वा कण्ठे च पृष्ठे च कः समुत्स्रष्टुमर्हति ॥२-६६-१०॥
ahīnāśī-viṣān kruddhān daṃśāya samupasthitān। kṛtvā kaṇṭhe ca pṛṣṭhe ca kaḥ samutsraṣṭum arhati॥2-66-10॥
[अहीन (ahīn) - without removing; आशीविषान् (āśīviṣān) - venomous serpents; क्रुद्धान् (kruddhān) - angry; दंशाय (daṃśāya) - for biting; समुपस्थितान् (samupasthitān) - present; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having placed; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhe) - on the neck; च (ca) - and; पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; च (ca) - and; कः (kaḥ) - who; समुत्स्रष्टुम् (samutsraṣṭum) - to release; अर्हति (arhati) - is able;]
(Without removing angry venomous serpents, present for biting, having placed on the neck and on the back, who is able to release?)
Who, having placed angry venomous serpents ready to bite on his neck and back, would be able to release them? (2-66-10)
आत्तशस्त्रा रथगताः कुपितास्तात पाण्डवाः। निःशेषं नः करिष्यन्ति क्रुद्धा ह्याशीविषा यथा ॥२-६६-११॥
āttaśastrā rathagatāḥ kupitāstāta pāṇḍavāḥ। niḥśeṣaṃ naḥ kariṣyanti kruddhā hyāśīviṣā yathā ॥2-66-11॥
[आत्तशस्त्राः (āttaśastrāḥ) - having taken up weapons; रथगताः (rathagatāḥ) - mounted on chariots; कुपिताः (kupitāḥ) - angry; तात (tāta) - O father; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; निःशेषम् (niḥśeṣam) - entirely; नः (naḥ) - us; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will destroy; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - enraged; हि (hi) - indeed; आशीविषाः (āśīviṣāḥ) - like venomous serpents; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Having taken up weapons, mounted on chariots, angry, O father, the Pāṇḍavas, entirely us will destroy, enraged indeed like venomous serpents just as.)
O father, the Pāṇḍavas, having taken up weapons and mounted on their chariots, angry and enraged like venomous serpents, will indeed destroy us completely, just as serpents do. (2-66-11)
संनद्धो ह्यर्जुनो याति विवृत्य परमेषुधी। गाण्डीवं मुहुरादत्ते निःश्वसंश्च निरीक्षते ॥२-६६-१२॥
saṁnaddho hy arjuno yāti vivṛtya parameṣudhī। gāṇḍīvaṁ muhur ādatte niḥśvasaṁś ca nirīkṣate ॥2-66-12॥
[संनद्धः (saṁnaddhaḥ) - armed; ready; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; याति (yāti) - goes; proceeds; विवृत्य (vivṛtya) - having opened; परमेषुधी (parameṣudhī) - the supreme archer; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow); मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; आदत्ते (ādatte) - takes up; grasps; निःश्वसंश् (niḥśvasaṁś) - sighing; च (ca) - and; निरीक्षते (nirīkṣate) - looks; observes;]
(Arjuna, indeed armed, proceeds, having opened (his chariot), the supreme archer. He repeatedly takes up the Gāṇḍīva, sighing and looking around.)
Arjuna, fully armed, moves forward after opening (his chariot), as the supreme archer. He repeatedly grasps his Gāṇḍīva bow, sighs, and surveys the surroundings. (2-66-12)
गदां गुर्वीं समुद्यम्य त्वरितश्च वृकोदरः। स्वरथं योजयित्वाशु निर्यात इति नः श्रुतम् ॥२-६६-१३॥
gadāṃ gurvīṃ samudyamya tvaritaś ca vṛkodaraḥ। sva-rathaṃ yojayitvā āśu niryāta iti naḥ śrutam ॥2-66-13॥

(Having lifted the heavy mace, and being swift, Vṛkodara, having yoked his own chariot quickly, departed—thus has been heard by us.)
We have heard that Vṛkodara, after lifting his heavy mace and swiftly yoking his own chariot, departed quickly. (2-66-13)
नकुलः खड्गमादाय चर्म चाप्यष्टचन्द्रकम्। सहदेवश्च राजा च चक्रुराकारमिङ्गितैः ॥२-६६-१४॥
nakulaḥ khaḍgam-ādāya carma cāpy-aṣṭacandrakam। sahadevaś-ca rājā ca cakrur-ākāram-iṅgitaiḥ ॥2-66-14॥

ते त्वास्थाय रथान्सर्वे बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदान्। अभिघ्नन्तो रथव्रातान्सेनायोगाय निर्ययुः ॥२-६६-१५॥
te tvāsthāya rathān sarve bahuśastraparicchadān। abhighnanto rathavrātān senāyogāya niryayuḥ ॥2-66-15॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; सर्वे (sarve) - all; बहुशस्त्रपरिच्छदान् (bahuśastraparicchadān) - with many weapons and armours; अभिघ्नन्तः (abhighnantaḥ) - striking; रथव्रातान् (rathavrātān) - groups of chariots; सेनायोगाय (senāyogāya) - for the array of the army; निर्ययुः (niryayuḥ) - set out;]
(They but having mounted all chariots with many weapons and armours, striking groups of chariots, for the array of the army, set out.)
But they all mounted their chariots equipped with many weapons and armours, and, striking at groups of chariots, set out for the battle array. (2-66-15)
न क्षंस्यन्ते तथास्माभिर्जातु विप्रकृता हि ते। द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं कस्तेषां क्षन्तुमर्हति ॥२-६६-१६॥
na kṣaṁsyante tathāsmābhir jātu viprakṛtā hi te. draupadyāś ca parikleśaṁ kas teṣāṁ kṣantum arhati ॥2-66-16॥
[न (na) - not; क्षंस्यन्ते (kṣaṁsyante) - will be forgiven; तथा (tathā) - thus; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; जातु (jātu) - ever; विप्रकृता (viprakṛtā) - wronged; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; द्रौपद्याः (draupadyāḥ) - of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; परिक्लेशं (parikleśam) - distress; कः (kaḥ) - who; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; ॥२-६६-१६॥ (॥2-66-16॥) -;]
(Not will be forgiven thus by us ever (those) wronged indeed they. Of Draupadī and (her) distress who of them to forgive is worthy.)
Those who have wronged us will never be forgiven by us. Who among them is worthy to forgive the distress caused to Draupadī? (2-66-16)
पुनर्दीव्याम भद्रं ते वनवासाय पाण्डवैः। एवमेतान्वशे कर्तुं शक्ष्यामो भरतर्षभ ॥२-६६-१७॥
punardīvyāma bhadraṃ te vanavāsāya pāṇḍavaiḥ। evametānvaśe kartuṃ śakṣyāmo bharatarṣabha ॥2-66-17॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दीव्याम (dīvyāma) - let us sport; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for the forest-dwelling; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतान् (etān) - these; वशे (vaśe) - under control; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; शक्ष्यामः (śakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall be able; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Again let us sport, auspiciousness to you, for the forest-dwelling by the Pāṇḍavas. Thus, these (matters) under control to do we shall be able, O bull among the Bharatas.)
Let us once again enjoy ourselves; may good befall you during the Pāṇḍavas' exile. In this way, we shall be able to keep these matters under control, O best of the Bharatas. (2-66-17)
ते वा द्वादश वर्षाणि वयं वा द्यूतनिर्जिताः। प्रविशेम महारण्यमजिनैः प्रतिवासिताः ॥२-६६-१८॥
te vā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vayaṃ vā dyūtanirjitāḥ। praviśema mahāraṇyam ajinaiḥ prativāsitāḥ ॥2-66-18॥
[ते (te) - they; वा (vā) - or; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वयम् (vayam) - we; वा (vā) - or; द्यूतनिर्जिताः (dyūtanirjitāḥ) - defeated in dice; प्रविशेम (praviśema) - may enter; महारण्यम् (mahāraṇyam) - great forest; अजिनैः (ajinaiḥ) - with skins; प्रतिवासिताः (prativāsitāḥ) - clothed;]
(They or twelve years we or defeated in dice may enter the great forest clothed with skins.)
Whether it is they or we who must spend twelve years, having been defeated in dice, let us enter the great forest clothed in skins. (2-66-18)
त्रयोदशं च सजने अज्ञाताः परिवत्सरम्। ज्ञाताश्च पुनरन्यानि वने वर्षाणि द्वादश ॥२-६६-१९॥
trayodaśaṃ ca sajane ajñātāḥ parivatsaram| jñātāś ca punar anyāni vane varṣāṇi dvādaśa ॥2-66-19॥
[त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - thirteenth; च (ca) - and; सजने (sajane) - among people; अज्ञाताः (ajñātāḥ) - unknown; परिवत्सरम् (parivatsaram) - one year; ज्ञाताः (jñātāḥ) - known; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punar) - again; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; वने (vane) - in the forest; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve;]
(Thirteenth and among people unknown one year; known and again other in the forest years twelve;)
They spent the thirteenth year unknown among people, and the other twelve years known in the forest. (2-66-19)
निवसेम वयं ते वा तथा द्यूतं प्रवर्तताम्। अक्षानुप्त्वा पुनर्द्यूतमिदं दीव्यन्तु पाण्डवाः ॥२-६६-२०॥
nivasēma vayaṃ te vā tathā dyūtaṃ pravartatām। akṣānuptvā punardyutamidaṃ dīvyantu pāṇḍavāḥ ॥2-66-20॥

(This is the most important thing to be done, O king, for us, bull among the Bharatas. This Śakuni indeed knows, he has the knowledge and mastery of dice. (2-66-21))

(We, being firm-rooted in the kingdom, having gathered friends and having honored a substantial and abundant army, (are) difficult to assail.)

(They and in the thirteenth year will complete if the vow. We shall conquer them, we, O king. Let it be pleasing to you, O scorcher of foes.)

भूरिश्रवाः शान्तनवो विकर्णश्च महारथः। मा द्यूतमित्यभाषन्त शमोऽस्त्विति च सर्वशः ॥२-६६-२६॥

अकामानां च सर्वेषां सुहृदामर्थदर्शिनाम्। अकरोत्पाण्डवाह्वानं धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः ॥२-६६-२७॥
akāmānāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ suhṛdām arthadarśinām। akarot pāṇḍavāhvānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ ॥2-66-27॥
[अकामानाम् (akāmānām) - of those who are unwilling; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अर्थदर्शिनाम् (arthadarśinām) - of those who see the meaning; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; पाण्डव-अह्वानम् (pāṇḍava-ahvānam) - invitation to the Pāṇḍavas; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; सुतप्रियः (sutapriyaḥ) - fond of his son;]
(Dhṛtarāṣṭra, fond of his son, made the invitation to the Pāṇḍavas, though all the friends who see the meaning were unwilling.)

अथाब्रवीन्महाराज धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम्। पुत्रहार्दाद्धर्मयुक्तं गान्धारी शोककर्शिता ॥२-६६-२८॥
athābravīn mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janeśvaram। putrahārdād dharmayuktaṃ gāndhārī śokakarśitā ॥2-66-28॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; जनेश्वरम् (janeśvaram) - lord of men; पुत्रहार्दात् (putrahārdāt) - from affection for her son; धर्मयुक्तम् (dharmayuktam) - endowed with righteousness; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; शोककर्शिता (śokakarśitā) - emaciated by grief;]
(Then Gandhari, emaciated by grief, endowed with righteousness, from affection for her son, spoke to the great king Dhritarashtra, the lord of men.)

जाते दुर्योधने क्षत्ता महामतिरभाषत। नीयतां परलोकाय साध्वयं कुलपांसनः ॥२-६६-२९॥
jāte duryodhone kṣattā mahāmatirabhāṣata। nīyatāṃ paralokāya sādhvayaṃ kulapāṃsanaḥ ॥2-66-29॥
[जाते (jāte) - having gone; having departed; दुर्योधने (duryodhone) - Duryodhana; (locative) in Duryodhana; क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the charioteer; (here, Vidura; nominative singular masculine); महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great-minded; wise; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; said; नीयताम् (nīyatām) - let him be led; let him be taken; परलोकाय (paralokāya) - to the other world; for the next world; साधु (sādhu) - well; rightly; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); कुलपांसनः (kulapāṃsanaḥ) - the disgrace of the family; (nominative singular masculine);]
(When Duryodhana had departed, the charioteer, the wise one, spoke: Let this disgrace of the family rightly be led to the other world.)
After Duryodhana had left, the wise charioteer (Vidura) said, "Let this disgrace of the family be justly taken to the next world." (2-66-29)
वयनदज्जातमात्रो हि गोमायुरिव भारत। अन्तो नूनं कुलस्यास्य कुरवस्तन्निबोधत ॥२-६६-३०॥
vyanadajjātamātro hi gomāyuriva bhārata। anto nūnaṃ kulasyāsya kuravastannibodhata ॥2-66-30॥
[वयनदत् (vyanadat) - cried out; जातमात्रः (jātamātraḥ) - just born; हि (hi) - indeed; गोमायुः (gomāyuḥ) - jackal; इव (iva) - like; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; अस्य (asya) - of this; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; तत् (tat) - that; निबोधत (nibodhata) - know;]
(Indeed, just born, cried out like a jackal, O Bhārata. Certainly, the end of this family's Kurus, know that.)
O Bhārata, just as a newborn jackal cries out, so too, know that this marks the certain end of the Kurus of this family. (2-66-30)
मा बालानामशिष्टानामभिमंस्था मतिं प्रभो। मा कुलस्य क्षये घोरे कारणं त्वं भविष्यसि ॥२-६६-३१॥
mā bālānāmaśiṣṭānāmabhimaṃsthā matiṃ prabho। mā kulasya kṣaye ghore kāraṇaṃ tvaṃ bhaviṣyasi ॥2-66-31॥
[मा (mā) - do not; बालानाम् (bālānām) - of the children; अशिष्टानाम् (aśiṣṭānām) - of the ill-mannered; अभिमंस्था (abhimaṃsthā) - consider; मतिं (matiṃ) - opinion; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; मा (mā) - do not; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; क्षये (kṣaye) - in destruction; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become;]
(Do not, of the children, of the ill-mannered, consider, opinion, O lord. Do not, of the family, in destruction, terrible, cause, you, will become.)
O lord, do not consider the opinion of ill-mannered children. Do not become the terrible cause of the destruction of the family. (2-66-31)
बद्धं सेतुं को नु भिन्द्याद्धमेच्छान्तं च पावकम्। शमे धृतान्पुनः पार्थान्कोपयेत्को नु भारत ॥२-६६-३२॥
baddhaṃ setuṃ ko nu bhindyāddham-icchāntaṃ ca pāvakam | śame dhṛtān punaḥ pārthān kopayet ko nu bhārata ||2-66-32||
[बद्धं (baddham) - bound; fixed; सेतुं (setum) - bridge; को (ko) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; भिन्द्यात् (bhindyāt) - would break; धम् (dham) - extinguished; इच्छान्तं (icchāntam) - desiring to end; च (ca) - and; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; शमे (śame) - in peace; धृतान् (dhṛtān) - those who are steadfast; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); कोपयेत् (kopayet) - would anger; को (ko) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Who indeed would break a fixed bridge, or desire to extinguish fire? Who would again anger the steadfast sons of Pṛthā in peace, O Bhārata?)
O Bhārata, who would break a constructed bridge, or wish to put out a fire? Who would again provoke the steadfast sons of Pṛthā when they are at peace? (2-66-32)
स्मरन्तं त्वामाजमीढ स्मारयिष्याम्यहं पुनः। शास्त्रं न शास्ति दुर्बुद्धिं श्रेयसे वेतराय वा ॥२-६६-३३॥
smarantaṃ tvām ājamīḍha smārayiṣyāmy ahaṃ punaḥ। śāstraṃ na śāsti durbuddhiṃ śreyase vetarāya vā ॥2-66-33॥
[स्मरन्तं (smarantaṃ) - remembering; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आजमीढ (ājamīḍha) - O descendant of Jamīḍha; स्मारयिष्यामि (smārayiṣyāmi) - I will remind; अहम् (aham) - I; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शास्त्रं (śāstraṃ) - scripture; न (na) - not; शास्ति (śāsti) - teaches; दुर्बुद्धिं (durbuddhiṃ) - one of poor understanding; श्रेयसे (śreyase) - for good; वेतराय (vetarāya) - for the opposite; वा (vā) - or;]
(Remembering you, O descendant of Jamīḍha, I will remind again. Scripture does not teach one of poor understanding, either for good or for the opposite.)
O descendant of Jamīḍha, as you remember, I will remind you again. The scripture does not instruct a person of poor understanding, whether for his good or otherwise. (2-66-33)
न वै वृद्धो बालमतिर्भवेद्राजन्कथञ्चन। त्वन्नेत्राः सन्तु ते पुत्रा मा त्वां दीर्णाः प्रहासिषुः ॥२-६६-३४॥
na vai vṛddho bālamatir bhaved rājan kathaṃcana। tvannetrāḥ santu te putrā mā tvāṃ dīrṇāḥ prahāsiṣuḥ ॥2-66-34॥
[न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - an old man; बालमति: (bālamatiḥ) - child-minded; (having the mind of a child); भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; त्वन्नेत्राः (tvannetrāḥ) - under your guidance; (your led; your directed;) सन्तु (santu) - let them be; ते (te) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; मा (mā) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दीर्णाः (dīrṇāḥ) - distressed; (torn; afflicted;) प्रहासिषुः (prahāsiṣuḥ) - should laugh at; (should ridicule; mock;) ॥२-६६-३४॥ (॥2-66-34॥) - (2-66-34);]
(Not indeed should an old man be child-minded, O king, in any way. Let your sons be under your guidance; let them not, distressed, laugh at you. (2-66-34))
O king, an old man should never be childish in mind. May your sons remain under your guidance; let them not, in distress, ridicule you. (2-66-34)
शमेन धर्मेण परस्य बुद्ध्या; जाता बुद्धिः सास्तु ते मा प्रतीपा। प्रध्वंसिनी क्रूरसमाहिता श्री; र्मृदुप्रौढा गच्छति पुत्रपौत्रान् ॥२-६६-३५॥
śamena dharmeṇa parasya buddhyā; jātā buddhiḥ sāstu te mā pratīpā. pradhvaṃsinī krūrasamāhitā śrīḥ; mṛduprauḍhā gacchati putrapautrān ॥2-66-35॥
[शमेन (śamena) - by tranquility; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; परस्य (parasya) - of another; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; जाता (jātā) - arisen; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; सा (sā) - that; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - to you; मा (mā) - not; प्रतीपा (pratīpā) - adverse; प्रध्वंसिनी (pradhvaṃsinī) - destroying; क्रूरसमाहिता (krūrasamāhitā) - with cruel intent; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; मृदुप्रौढा (mṛduprauḍhā) - gentle and mature; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; पुत्रपौत्रान् (putrapautrān) - to sons and grandsons;]
(By tranquility, by righteousness, by another's intellect; arisen understanding, let that be to you, not adverse. Destroying, with cruel intent, prosperity, gentle and mature, goes to sons and grandsons.)
May the understanding that arises from tranquility, righteousness, and another's intellect be yours and not adverse. Prosperity, when accompanied by cruelty and destruction, departs even from the gentle and mature, going to the sons and grandsons. (2-66-35)
अथाब्रवीन्महाराजो गान्धारीं धर्मदर्शिनीम्। अन्तः कामं कुलस्यास्तु न शक्ष्यामि निवारितुम् ॥२-६६-३६॥

(Then the great king said to Gāndhārī, the one who sees dharma: Within, let there be desire of the family; I am not able to restrain (it).)

(As they desire, so indeed let it be; let the Pāṇḍavas return. Let my people again perform the dice-game together with the Pāṇḍavas.)
