rājan kiṃ karavāmas te praśādhy asmāṃs tvam īśvaraḥ। nityaṃ hi sthātum icchāmas tava bhārata śāsane ॥2-65-1॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाम (karavāma) - shall we do; स्ते (te) - for you; प्रशाध्य (praśādhya) - having ruled over; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - are the lord; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; इच्छाम (icchāma) - we wish; स्तव (tava) - in your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; शासने (śāsane) - rule;]
(O king, what shall we do for you, having ruled over us? You are the lord. Indeed, we always wish to remain in your rule, O Bhārata.)

अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते अरिष्टं स्वस्ति गच्छत। अनुज्ञाताः सहधनाः स्वराज्यमनुशासत ॥२-६५-२॥
ajātaśatro bhadraṃ te ariṣṭaṃ svasti gacchata। anujñātāḥ sahadhanāḥ svarājyamanuśāsata ॥2-65-2॥
[अजातशत्रो (ajātaśatro) - O Ajātaśatru; (one whose enemies are not born;) भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; (goodness;) ते (te) - to you; अरिष्टं (ariṣṭaṃ) - freedom from harm; (safety;) स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; (welfare;) गच्छत (gacchata) - go; (proceed;) अनुज्ञाताः (anujñātāḥ) - having been permitted; (allowed;) सहधनाः (sahadhanāḥ) - together with your wealth; (with possessions;) स्वराज्यम् (svarājyam) - your own kingdom; (sovereignty;) अनुशासत (anuśāsata) - govern; (rule; manage;);]
(O Ajātaśatru, auspiciousness to you, freedom from harm, well-being, go. Having been permitted, together with your wealth, govern your own kingdom.)
O Ajātaśatru, may you have auspiciousness, safety, and well-being. Go forth. Having received permission, rule your own kingdom together with your wealth. (2-65-2)
इदं त्वेवावबोद्धव्यं वृद्धस्य मम शासनम्। धिया निगदितं कृत्स्नं पथ्यं निःश्रेयसं परम् ॥२-६५-३॥
idaṃ tvevāvaboddhavyaṃ vṛddhasya mama śāsanam। dhiyā nigaditaṃ kṛtsnaṃ pathyaṃ niḥśreyasaṃ param ॥2-65-3॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; अवबोद्धव्यं (avaboddhavyaṃ) - to be understood; वृद्धस्य (vṛddhasya) - of the elder; मम (mama) - my; शासनम् (śāsanam) - instruction; धिया (dhiyā) - by intellect; निगदितं (nigaditaṃ) - spoken; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnaṃ) - entirely; पथ्यं (pathyaṃ) - wholesome; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśreyasaṃ) - leading to the highest good; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(This indeed but is to be understood: the instruction of my elder, spoken entirely by intellect, wholesome, leading to the highest good, supreme.)
But this must indeed be understood: the instruction of my elder, spoken entirely with discernment, is wholesome and leads to the highest and supreme good. (2-65-3)
वेत्थ त्वं तात धर्माणां गतिं सूक्ष्मां युधिष्ठिर। विनीतोऽसि महाप्राज्ञ वृद्धानां पर्युपासिता ॥२-६५-४॥
vettha tvaṃ tāta dharmāṇāṃ gatiṃ sūkṣmāṃ yudhiṣṭhira। vinīto'si mahāprājña vṛddhānāṃ paryupāsitā ॥2-65-4॥
[वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तात (tāta) - O dear; धर्माणां (dharmāṇāṃ) - of dharmas; गतिं (gatiṃ) - path; सूक्ष्मां (sūkṣmāṃ) - subtle; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; विनीतः (vinītaḥ) - trained; असि (asi) - are; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - greatly wise; वृद्धानां (vṛddhānāṃ) - of elders; पर्युपासिता (paryupāsitā) - attended upon;]
(You know, you, O dear, the subtle path of dharmas, Yudhiṣṭhira. Trained you are, greatly wise, attended upon the elders.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, you know the subtle path of dharma, dear one. You are trained, greatly wise, and have served the elders. (2-65-4)
यतो बुद्धिस्ततः शान्तिः प्रशमं गच्छ भारत। नादारौ क्रमते शस्त्रं दारौ शस्त्रं निपात्यते ॥२-६५-५॥
yato buddhistataḥ śāntiḥ praśamaṃ gaccha bhārata। nādārau kramate śastraṃ dārau śastraṃ nipātyate ॥2-65-5॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - from where; since; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; discernment; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; tranquility; प्रशमम् (praśamam) - cessation; calmness; गच्छ (gaccha) - goes; attains; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; अदारौ (adārau) - in the absence of the two; क्रमते (kramate) - proceeds; moves; शस्त्रं (śastram) - weapon; दारौ (dārau) - in the presence of the two; शस्त्रं (śastram) - weapon; निपात्यते (nipātyate) - is cast down; is thrown down;]
(From where there is intellect, from that comes peace; cessation is attained, O Bhārata. Without the two, the weapon does not proceed; in the presence of the two, the weapon is cast down. (2-65-5))
Where there is intellect, there is peace; calmness is attained, O Bhārata. Without both, the weapon does not act; with both, the weapon is subdued. (2-65-5)
न वैराण्यभिजानन्ति गुणान्पश्यन्ति नागुणान्। विरोधं नाधिगच्छन्ति ये त उत्तमपूरुषाः ॥२-६५-६॥
na vairāṇyabhijānanti guṇānpaśyanti nāguṇān। virodhaṃ nādhigacchanti ye ta uttamapūruṣāḥ ॥2-65-6॥
[न (na) - not; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; अभिजानन्ति (abhijānanti) - recognize; गुणान् (guṇān) - virtues; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; न (na) - not; अगुणान् (aguṇān) - faults; विरोधं (virodhaṃ) - conflict; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छन्ति (adhigacchanti) - attain; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - they; उत्तम (uttama) - best; पूरुषाः (pūruṣāḥ) - persons;]
(Not enmities recognize, virtues see, not faults, conflict not attain, who they best persons.)
Those who do not recognize enmities, who see virtues and not faults, and who do not engage in conflict—these are the best of people. (2-65-6)
संवादे परुषाण्याहुर्युधिष्ठिर नराधमाः। प्रत्याहुर्मध्यमास्त्वेतानुक्ताः परुषमुत्तरम् ॥२-६५-७॥
saṃvāde paruṣāṇy āhur yudhiṣṭhira narādhamāḥ। praty āhur madhyamās tv etān uktāḥ paruṣam uttaram ॥2-65-7॥
[संवादे (saṃvāde) - in conversation; परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; आहुः (āhuḥ) - say; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; नराधमाः (narādhamāḥ) - lowest of men; प्रत्याहुः (pratyāhuḥ) - reply; मध्यमाः (madhyamāḥ) - the middling ones; तु (tu) - but; एतान् (etān) - these; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken; परुषम् (paruṣam) - harsh; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply;]
(In conversation, the lowest of men say harsh words, O Yudhiṣṭhira; the middling ones reply, but these spoken (words) are a harsh reply.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, in conversation, the lowest of men utter harsh words, while the middling ones respond with a harsh reply to such words. (2-65-7)
नैवोक्ता नैव चानुक्ता अहिताः परुषा गिरः। प्रतिजल्पन्ति वै धीराः सदा उत्तमपूरुषाः ॥२-६५-८॥
naivoktā naiva cānuktā ahitāḥ paruṣā giraḥ। pratijalpanti vai dhīrāḥ sadā uttamapūruṣāḥ ॥2-65-8॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; च (ca) - and; अनुक्ता (anuktā) - unspoken; अहिताः (ahitāḥ) - harmful; परुषाः (paruṣāḥ) - harsh; गिरः (giraḥ) - words; प्रतिजल्पन्ति (pratijalpanti) - utter in return; वै (vai) - indeed; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - wise ones; सदा (sadā) - always; उत्तमपूरुषाः (uttamapūruṣāḥ) - the best persons;]
(Not indeed spoken, not indeed and unspoken, harmful, harsh words, utter in return indeed wise ones always the best persons.)
The best persons, who are always wise, never utter words that are either spoken or unspoken, harmful or harsh, in return. (2-65-8)
स्मरन्ति सुकृतान्येव न वैराणि कृतान्यपि। सन्तः प्रतिविजानन्तो लब्ध्वा प्रत्ययमात्मनः ॥२-६५-९॥
smaranti sukṛtānyeva na vairāṇi kṛtānyapi। santaḥ prativijānanto labdhvā pratyayamātmanaḥ ॥2-65-9॥
[स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - they remember; सुकृतानि (sukṛtāni) - good deeds; एव (eva) - only; न (na) - not; वैराणि (vairāṇi) - enmities; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done; अपि (api) - even; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous; प्रतिविजानन्तः (prativijānantaḥ) - knowing in return; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; प्रत्ययम् (pratyayam) - conviction; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself;]
(They remember only good deeds, not even enmities done. The virtuous, knowing in return, having obtained conviction of oneself.)
The virtuous remember only good deeds, not even the enmities done to them. When they are convinced of someone's true nature, they understand accordingly. (2-65-9)
तथाचरितमार्येण त्वयास्मिन्सत्समागमे। दुर्योधनस्य पारुष्यं तत्तात हृदि मा कृथाः ॥२-६५-१०॥
tathācaritam āryeṇa tvayā asmin sat-samāgame। duryodhanasya pāruṣyam tat tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ ॥2-65-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; चरितम् (caritam) - acted; done; आर्येण (āryeṇa) - by the noble one; by you (noble person); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; सत्समागमे (sat-samāgame) - in the assembly of the good; in the noble gathering; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; पारुष्यं (pāruṣyam) - harshness; rudeness; तत् (tat) - that; तात (tāta) - O father; dear one; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (your) heart; मा (mā) - do not; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make; keep;]
(Thus acted by you, O noble one, in this noble assembly. The harshness of Duryodhana, O father, do not keep that in your heart.)
O noble one, you have acted thus in this noble assembly. O father, do not keep Duryodhana's harshness in your heart. (2-65-10)
मातरं चैव गान्धारीं मां च त्वद्गुणकाङ्क्षिणम्। उपस्थितं वृद्धमन्धं पितरं पश्य भारत ॥२-६५-११॥
mātaraṃ caiva gāndhārīṃ māṃ ca tvad-guṇa-kāṅkṣiṇam। upasthitaṃ vṛddha-mandhaṃ pitaraṃ paśya bhārata ॥2-65-11॥
[मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - Gandhari; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; त्वत् (tvat) - your; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; काङ्क्षिणम् (kāṅkṣiṇam) - desiring; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - present; वृद्ध (vṛddha) - aged; मन्धम् (mandham) - blind; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; पश्य (paśya) - see; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Mother and indeed Gandhari, and me desiring your qualities, present, the aged blind father, see, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, see your mother, Gandhari, and me, who desires your virtues, and your aged, blind father, all present here. (2-65-11)
प्रेक्षापूर्वं मया द्यूतमिदमासीदुपेक्षितम्। मित्राणि द्रष्टुकामेन पुत्राणां च बलाबलम् ॥२-६५-१२॥
prekṣāpūrvaṃ mayā dyūtamidamāsīdupekṣitam। mitrāṇi draṣṭukāmena putrāṇāṃ ca balābalam ॥2-65-12॥
[प्रेक्षा (prekṣā) - observation; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; मया (mayā) - by me; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; इदम् (idam) - this; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; उपेक्षितम् (upekṣitam) - neglected; मित्राणि (mitrāṇi) - friends; द्रष्टुकामेन (draṣṭukāmena) - by one desiring to see; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; च (ca) - and; बलाबलम् (balābalam) - strength and weakness;]
(Before observation, by me, this dice-game was neglected. Friends, by one desiring to see, and the strength and weakness of sons.)

अशोच्याः कुरवो राजन्येषां त्वमनुशासिता। मन्त्री च विदुरो धीमान्सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥२-६५-१३॥
aśocyāḥ kuravo rājanyeṣāṃ tvam anuśāsitā। mantrī ca viduro dhīmān sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ ॥2-65-13॥
[अशोच्याः (aśocyāḥ) - not-to-be-grieved; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; राजन्येषाम् (rājanyeṣām) - of the royal ones; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुशासिता (anuśāsitā) - instructor; मन्त्री (mantrī) - minister; च (ca) - and; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः (sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ) - expert-in-all-śāstras;]
(Not-to-be-grieved are the Kurus, of the royal ones you are the instructor. The minister and Vidura, wise, expert in all śāstras.)
The Kurus are not to be grieved for, O king; among the royal ones, you are their instructor. The wise minister Vidura is an expert in all the śāstras. (2-65-13)
त्वयि धर्मोऽर्जुने वीर्यं भीमसेने पराक्रमः। श्रद्धा च गुरुशुश्रूषा यमयोः पुरुषाग्र्ययोः ॥२-६५-१४॥
tvayi dharmo'rjune vīryaṃ bhīmasene parākramaḥ। śraddhā ca guruśuśrūṣā yamayoḥ puruṣāgryayoḥ ॥2-65-14॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; अर्जुने (arjune) - O Arjuna; वीर्यं (vīryam) - valor; भीमसेने (bhīmasene) - in Bhīmasena; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - prowess; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; च (ca) - and; गुरुशुश्रूषा (guruśuśrūṣā) - service to elders; यमयोः (yamayoḥ) - in the two sons of Yama; पुरुषाग्र्ययोः (puruṣāgryayoḥ) - in the foremost of men;]
(In you is righteousness, O Arjuna; valor is in Bhīmasena, prowess. Faith and service to elders are in the two sons of Yama, the foremost of men.)
O Arjuna, righteousness is found in you; valor and prowess in Bhīmasena; faith and service to elders are present in the two sons of Yama, who are the foremost among men. (2-65-14)
अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते खाण्डवप्रस्थमाविश। भ्रातृभिस्तेऽस्तु सौभ्रात्रं धर्मे ते धीयतां मनः ॥२-६५-१५॥
ajātaśatro bhadraṃ te khāṇḍavaprastham āviśa। bhrātṛbhiḥ te 'stu saubhrātraṃ dharme te dhīyatāṃ manaḥ ॥2-65-15॥
[अजातशत्रो (ajātaśatro) - O one whose enemies are unborn; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; खाण्डवप्रस्थम् (khāṇḍavaprastham) - Khandavaprastha; आविश (āviśa) - enter; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; ते (te) - your; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; सौभ्रात्रम् (saubhrātram) - brotherhood; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; ते (te) - your; धीयताम् (dhīyatām) - may be placed; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(O one whose enemies are unborn, auspiciousness to you, enter Khandavaprastha. With your brothers, let there be brotherhood; in righteousness, may your mind be placed.)
O Ajatashatru, may auspiciousness be with you as you enter Khandavaprastha. May there be brotherhood with your brothers, and may your mind be set in righteousness. (2-65-15)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्युक्तो भरतश्रेष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। कृत्वार्यसमयं सर्वं प्रतस्थे भ्रातृभिः सह ॥२-६५-१६॥
ityukto bharataśreṣṭho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। kṛtvāryasamayaṃ sarvaṃ pratasthe bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥2-65-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; भरतश्रेष्ठः (bharataśreṣṭhaḥ) - best among the Bharatas; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; आर्यसमयम् (āryasamayam) - noble agreement; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set out; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together;]
(Thus having been addressed, the best among the Bharatas, king of dharma Yudhishthira, having fulfilled all the noble agreement, set out together with his brothers.)
Thus addressed, Yudhishthira, the best of the Bharatas and king of dharma, fulfilled all the noble agreements and set out with his brothers. (2-65-16)
ते रथान्मेघसङ्काशानास्थाय सह कृष्णया। प्रययुर्हृष्टमनस इन्द्रप्रस्थं पुरोत्तमम् ॥२-६५-१७॥
te rathān meghasaṅkāśān āsthāya saha kṛṣṇayā। prayayuḥ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ indraprasthaṃ purottamam ॥2-65-17॥
[ते (te) - they; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; मेघसङ्काशान् (meghasaṅkāśān) - cloud-like (in appearance); आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; सह (saha) - together with; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); प्रययुः (prayayūḥ) - they set forth; हृष्टमनसः (hṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; इन्द्रप्रस्थम् (indraprastham) - Indraprastha; पुरोत्तमम् (purottamam) - the best of cities;]
(They, having mounted chariots resembling clouds, together with Kṛṣṇā, set forth with delighted minds to Indraprastha, the best of cities.)
They ascended their cloud-like chariots with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and, their hearts filled with joy, set out for Indraprastha, the foremost of cities. (2-65-17)
