tato vyadhvagataṃ pārthaṃ prātikāmī yudhiṣṭhiram। uvāca vacanādrājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-67-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्यध्वगतं (vyadhvagatam) - having gone along the road; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); प्रातिकामी (prātikāmī) - Prātikāmī (the charioteer); युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise;]
(Then Prātikāmī, having gone along the road, said to Pārtha (Yudhiṣṭhira) by the word of the wise king Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
Then Prātikāmī, after proceeding, conveyed to Yudhiṣṭhira the message of the wise king Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (2-67-1)
उपस्तीर्णा सभा राजन्नक्षानुप्त्वा युधिष्ठिर। एहि पाण्डव दीव्येति पिता त्वामाह भारत ॥२-६७-२॥

(The assembly is spread out, O king, having placed the dice, O Yudhiṣṭhira. "Come, O Pāṇḍava, play (dice)," thus your father said to you, O Bhārata.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the assembly is prepared and the dice are set, O king. Your father said to you, "Come, O Pāṇḍava, play dice," O descendant of Bharata. (2-67-2)

धातुर्नियोगाद्भूतानि प्राप्नुवन्ति शुभाशुभम्। न निवृत्तिस्तयोरस्ति देवितव्यं पुनर्यदि ॥२-६७-३॥
dhātur-niyogād-bhūtāni prāpnuvanti śubhāśubham। na nivṛttis-tayor-asti devitavyaṃ punar-yadi ॥2-67-3॥
[धातोः (dhātuḥ) - of the element; (here: of the inner principle, or the doer;) नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by the injunction; by the command; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; entities; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; reach; शुभाशुभम् (śubhāśubham) - good and evil; auspicious and inauspicious; न (na) - not; निवृत्तिः (nivṛttiḥ) - cessation; stopping; तयोः (tayor) - of these two; अस्ति (asti) - there is; देवितव्यम् (devitavyam) - to be lived; to be experienced; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यदि (yadi) - if;]
(By the injunction of the element, beings attain good and evil. There is no cessation of these two; to be lived again, if.)
By the command of the inner principle, beings experience both good and evil. There is no end to these two; life must be lived again, if so destined. (2-67-3)
अक्षद्यूते समाह्वानं नियोगात्स्थविरस्य च। जानन्नपि क्षयकरं नातिक्रमितुमुत्सहे ॥२-६७-४॥
akṣadyūte samāhvānaṃ niyogāt sthavirasya ca। jānann api kṣayakaraṃ nātikramitum utsahe ॥2-67-4॥
[अक्षद्यूते (akṣadyūte) - in dice-play; समाह्वानं (samāhvānam) - invitation; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by command; स्थविरस्य (sthavirasya) - of the elder; च (ca) - and; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; क्षयकरं (kṣayakaram) - destructive; न (na) - not; अतिक्रमितुम् (atikramitum) - to transgress; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(In dice-play, invitation by command of the elder and, knowing even (it is) destructive, not to transgress am able (I am not able to transgress).)
Even knowing that the invitation to dice-play by the command of the elder is destructive, I am not able to disobey it. (2-67-4)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इति ब्रुवन्निववृते भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवः। जानंश्च शकुनेर्मायां पार्थो द्यूतमियात्पुनः ॥२-६७-५॥
iti bruvannivavṛte bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ। jānaṃśca śakunermāyāṃ pārtho dyūtamiyātpunaḥ ॥2-67-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; निववृते (nivavṛte) - departed; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; च (ca) - and; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Śakuni; मायाम् (māyām) - deceit; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna or Yudhiṣṭhira); द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; इयात् (iyāt) - should go; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus speaking, the Pāṇḍava departed together with his brothers, and knowing the deceit of Śakuni, Pārtha should go again to the dice-game.)
Thus, having spoken in this way, the Pāṇḍava departed with his brothers. Knowing the deceit of Śakuni, Pārtha again went to the game of dice. (2-67-5)
विविशुस्ते सभां तां तु पुनरेव महारथाः। व्यथयन्ति स्म चेतांसि सुहृदां भरतर्षभाः ॥२-६७-६॥
viviśus te sabhāṃ tāṃ tu punar eva mahārathāḥ। vyathayanti sma cetāṃsi suhṛdāṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ ॥2-67-6॥
[विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; ते (te) - they; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; ताम् (tām) - that; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; व्यथयन्ति (vyathayanti) - disturbed; स्म (sma) - indeed; चेतांसि (cetāṃsi) - minds; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Bharatas;]
(They, the great chariot-warriors, again indeed entered that assembly, but the bulls among the Bharatas indeed disturbed the minds of their friends.)
The great chariot-warriors again entered that assembly, but the foremost of the Bharatas disturbed the minds of their friends. (2-67-6)
यथोपजोषमासीनाः पुनर्द्यूतप्रवृत्तये। सर्वलोकविनाशाय दैवेनोपनिपीडिताः ॥२-६७-७॥
yathopajoṣam āsīnāḥ punar dyūta-pravṛttaye। sarva-loka-vināśāya daivena upanipīḍitāḥ ॥2-67-7॥
[यथोपजोषम् (yathopajoṣam) - as per pleasure; as convenient; आसीनाः (āsīnāḥ) - seated; sitting; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; द्यूतप्रवृत्तये (dyūta-pravṛttaye) - for the recommencement of gambling; for the start of dice-play; सर्वलोकविनाशाय (sarva-loka-vināśāya) - for the destruction of all worlds; for the ruin of all people; दैवेन (daivena) - by fate; by destiny; उपनिपीडिताः (upanipīḍitāḥ) - oppressed; afflicted;]
(Seated as per pleasure, again for the recommencement of gambling, for the destruction of all worlds, oppressed by fate.)
They sat as they pleased, once again to resume the game of dice, driven by fate towards the destruction of all people. (2-67-7)
शकुनिरुवाच॥

अमुञ्चत्स्थविरो यद्वो धनं पूजितमेव तत्। महाधनं ग्लहं त्वेकं शृणु मे भरतर्षभ ॥२-६७-८॥
amuñcatsthaviro yadvo dhanaṃ pūjitameva tat। mahādhanaṃ glahaṃ tvekaṃ śṛṇu me bharatarṣabha ॥2-67-8॥
[अमुञ्चत् (amuñcat) - did not release; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - the elder; यत् (yat) - which; वः (vaḥ) - your; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; पूजितम् (pūjitam) - honored; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; महाधनम् (mahādhanam) - great wealth; ग्लहम् (glaham) - gambling; तु (tu) - but; एकम् (ekam) - one; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - from me; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(The elder did not release that wealth of yours which was indeed honored. But hear from me of one great wealth, gambling, O bull among the Bharatas.)
The elder did not give up your honored wealth. But listen to me, O best of the Bharatas, about one great wealth—gambling. (2-67-8)
वयं द्वादश वर्षाणि युष्माभिर्द्यूतनिर्जिताः। प्रविशेम महारण्यं रौरवाजिनवाससः ॥२-६७-९॥
vayaṃ dvādaśa varṣāṇi yuṣmābhirdyūtanirjitāḥ। praviśema mahāraṇyaṃ rauravājinavāsasaḥ ॥2-67-9॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you; द्यूत (dyūta) - dice; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - defeated; प्रविशेम (praviśema) - let us enter; महा-अरण्यम् (mahāraṇyam) - great forest; रौरव-अजिन-वाससः (rauravājinavāsasaḥ) - clad in garments of ruru-deer skin;]
(We, defeated by you at dice for twelve years, let us enter the great forest clad in garments of ruru-deer skin.)
We, having been defeated by you at dice for twelve years, shall enter the great forest wearing garments made of ruru-deer skin. (2-67-9)
त्रयोदशं च सजने अज्ञाताः परिवत्सरम्। ज्ञाताश्च पुनरन्यानि वने वर्षाणि द्वादश ॥२-६७-१०॥
trayodaśaṃ ca sajane ajñātāḥ parivatsaram। jñātāś ca punar anyāni vane varṣāṇi dvādaśa ॥2-67-10॥
[त्रयोदशम् (trayodaśam) - thirteenth; च (ca) - and; सजने (sajane) - among people; अज्ञाताः (ajñātāḥ) - unknown; परिवत्सरम् (parivatsaram) - one year; ज्ञाताः (jñātāḥ) - known; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punar) - again; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; वने (vane) - in the forest; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve;]
(Thirteenth and among people unknown one year; known and again other in the forest years twelve.)
They spent one year, the thirteenth, unknown among people; and the other twelve years, known, in the forest. (2-67-10)
अस्माभिर्वा जिता यूयं वने वर्षाणि द्वादश। वसध्वं कृष्णया सार्धमजिनैः प्रतिवासिताः ॥२-६७-११॥
asmābhirvā jitā yūyaṃ vane varṣāṇi dvādaśa। vasadhvaṃ kṛṣṇayā sārdhamajinaiḥ prativāsitāḥ ॥2-67-11॥
[अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वा (vā) - or; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; वने (vane) - in the forest; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वसध्वम् (vasadhvam) - dwell; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अजिनैः (ajinaiḥ) - with skins; प्रतिवासिताः (prativāsitāḥ) - having been clothed;]
(By us or you conquered, in the forest twelve years, dwell with Kṛṣṇā together with skins, having been clothed.)
Either we have conquered you, or you have spent twelve years in the forest, dwelling with Kṛṣṇā, clothed in skins. (2-67-11)
त्रयोदशे च निर्वृत्ते पुनरेव यथोचितम्। स्वराज्यं प्रतिपत्तव्यमितरैरथ वेतरैः ॥२-६७-१२॥
trayodaśe ca nirvṛtte punareva yathocitam। svarājyaṃ pratipattavyam itarair atha vetaraiḥ ॥2-67-12॥
[त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - in the thirteenth (year); च (ca) - and; निर्वृत्ते (nirvṛtte) - having been completed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; यथोचितम् (yathocitam) - as is proper; स्वराज्यम् (svarājyam) - own kingdom; प्रतिपत्तव्यम् (pratipattavyam) - should be regained; इतरैः (itaraiḥ) - by the others; अथ (atha) - or; वेतरैः (vetaraiḥ) - by the different (others);]
(In the thirteenth (year), and having been completed, again indeed as is proper, own kingdom should be regained by the others or by the different (others).)
When the thirteenth year is completed, the kingdom should be rightfully regained, either by the others or by different parties, as appropriate. (2-67-12)
अनेन व्यवसायेन सहास्माभिर्युधिष्ठिर। अक्षानुप्त्वा पुनर्द्यूतमेहि दीव्यस्व भारत ॥२-६७-१३॥
anena vyavasāyena sahāsmābhiryudhiṣṭhira। akṣān uptvā punar dyūtam ehi dīvyasva bhārata ॥2-67-13॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; व्यवसायेन (vyavasāyena) - by determination; सह (saha) - together; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - with us; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अक्षान् (akṣān) - dice; उप्त्वा (uptvā) - having cast; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - game of dice; एहि (ehi) - come; दीव्यस्व (dīvyasva) - play; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By this determination, together with us, O Yudhiṣṭhira, having cast the dice, come again to the game of dice, play, O Bhārata.)
With this resolve, join us, Yudhiṣṭhira. Cast the dice again, come to the game, and play, O Bhārata. (2-67-13)

अहो धिग्बान्धवा नैनं बोधयन्ति महद्भयम्। बुद्ध्या बोध्यं न बुध्यन्ते स्वयं च भरतर्षभाः ॥२-६७-१४॥
aho dhigbāndhavā nainaṃ bodhayanti mahadbhayam। buddhyā bodhyaṃ na budhyante svayaṃ ca bharatarṣabhāḥ ॥2-67-14॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; धिक् (dhik) - shame; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; बोधयन्ति (bodhayanti) - make aware; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - danger; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; बोध्यम् (bodhyam) - to be understood; न (na) - not; बुध्यन्ते (budhyante) - understand; स्वयम् (svayam) - themselves; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - best of the Bharatas;]
(Alas, shame! The relatives do not make him aware of the great danger. By intellect, what is to be understood, they do not understand themselves, and the best of the Bharatas.)
Alas! Shame on the relatives—they do not make him aware of the great danger. Even by intellect, what should be understood, they themselves do not understand, O best of the Bharatas. (2-67-14)

जनप्रवादान्सुबहूनिति शृण्वन्नराधिपः। ह्रिया च धर्मसङ्गाच्च पार्थो द्यूतमियात्पुनः ॥२-६७-१५॥
janapravādān subahūn iti śṛṇvan narādhipaḥ। hriyā ca dharmasaṅgāc ca pārtho dyūtam iyāt punaḥ ॥2-67-15॥
[जनप्रवादान् (janapravādān) - popular sayings; सुबहून् (subahūn) - very many; इति (iti) - thus; शृण्वन् (śṛṇvan) - hearing; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; च (ca) - and; धर्मसङ्गात् (dharmasaṅgāt) - from attachment to dharma; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; इयात् (iyāt) - should go; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Hearing very many popular sayings thus, the king, with modesty and from attachment to dharma, and Pārtha should go again to the dice-game.)
Hearing many popular opinions, the king, out of modesty and attachment to righteousness, and Pārtha, should again go to the dice-game. (2-67-15)
जानन्नपि महाबुद्धिः पुनर्द्यूतमवर्तयत्। अप्ययं न विनाशः स्यात्कुरूणामिति चिन्तयन् ॥२-६७-१६॥
jānann api mahābuddhiḥ punar dyūtam avartayat। apy ayaṃ na vināśaḥ syāt kurūṇām iti cintayan ॥2-67-16॥
[जानन् (jānan) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; महाबुद्धिः (mahābuddhiḥ) - great-intellect; पुनः (punar) - again; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-game; अवर्तयत् (avartayat) - caused to be played; अपि (api) - even; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking;]
(Knowing, even the great-intellect again caused the dice-game to be played. Even thinking thus: "This might not be the destruction of the Kurus.")
Though he knew, the wise one again initiated the dice-game, thinking, "Perhaps this may not be the destruction of the Kurus." (2-67-16)

कथं वै मद्विधो राजा स्वधर्ममनुपालयन्। आहूतो विनिवर्तेत दीव्यामि शकुने त्वया ॥२-६७-१७॥
kathaṁ vai mad-vidho rājā svadharmam-anupālayan। āhūto vinivarteta dīvyāmi śakune tvayā ॥2-67-17॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; वै (vai) - indeed; मद्विधः (mad-vidhaḥ) - like me; राजा (rājā) - king; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - one's own duty; अनुपालयन् (anupālayan) - observing; आहूतः (āhūtaḥ) - having been called; विनिवर्तेत (vinivarteta) - would turn back; दीव्यामि (dīvyāmi) - I play at dice; शकुने (śakune) - O Śakuni; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(How indeed a king like me, observing his own duty, having been called, would turn back? I play at dice, O Śakuni, by you. (2-67-17))
How could a king like me, who follows his own duty, refuse when called? O Śakuni, I play at dice with you. (2-67-17)

गवाश्वं बहुधेनूकमपर्यन्तमजाविकम्। गजाः कोशो हिरण्यं च दासीदासं च सर्वशः ॥२-६७-१८॥
gavāśvaṃ bahudhenūkamaparyantamajāvikam। gajāḥ kośo hiraṇyaṃ ca dāsīdāsaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥2-67-18॥
[गव (gava) - of cows; अश्वं (aśvaṃ) - horses; बहु (bahu) - many; धेनूकम् (dhenūkam) - milch-cows; अपर्यन्तम् (aparyantam) - endless; अजाविकम् (ajāvikam) - goats and sheep; गजाः (gajāḥ) - elephants; कोशः (kośaḥ) - treasury; हिरण्यं (hiraṇyaṃ) - gold; च (ca) - and; दासी (dāsī) - female slaves; दासं (dāsaṃ) - male slaves; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(Of cows, horses, many milch-cows, endless goats and sheep, elephants, treasury, gold, and female slaves, male slaves, and entirely.)
There were cows, horses, many milch-cows, endless goats and sheep, elephants, treasury, gold, and all kinds of female and male slaves in abundance. (2-67-18)
एष नो ग्लह एवैको वनवासाय पाण्डवाः। यूयं वयं वा विजिता वसेम वनमाश्रिताः ॥२-६७-१९॥
eṣa no glaha evaiko vanavāsāya pāṇḍavāḥ। yūyaṃ vayaṃ vā vijitā vasema vanamāśritāḥ ॥2-67-19॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; नः (naḥ) - for us; ग्लहः (glahaḥ) - dispute; एव (eva) - indeed; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; वनवासाय (vanavāsāya) - for forest-dwelling; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); वयम् (vayam) - we; वा (vā) - or; विजिताः (vijitāḥ) - conquered; वसेम (vasema) - may dwell; वनम् (vanam) - forest; आश्रिताः (āśritāḥ) - having resorted to;]
(This dispute is indeed only for us for forest-dwelling, O Pāṇḍavas. Either you or we, being conquered, may dwell having resorted to the forest.)
This dispute is solely for the sake of forest exile, O Pāṇḍavas. Whichever of us is defeated—either you or we—shall go and live in the forest. (2-67-19)
अनेन व्यवसायेन दीव्याम भरतर्षभ। समुत्क्षेपेण चैकेन वनवासाय भारत ॥२-६७-२०॥
anena vyavasāyena dīvyāma bharatarṣabha। samutkṣepena caikena vanavāsāya bhārata ॥2-67-20॥

(By this effort let us strive, O bull among the Bharatas, by throwing up and with one, for forest dwelling, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, O best of the Bharatas, let us strive with this effort; by casting (the dice) with one throw, let us determine the exile to the forest. (2-67-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

pratijagrāha taṃ pārtho glahaṃ jagrāha saubalaḥ। jitamityeva śakuniryudhiṣṭhiramabhāṣata ॥2-67-21॥
