Dhṛtarāṣṭra said.
कथं गच्छति कौन्तेयो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनः सव्यसाची माद्रीपुत्रौ च तावुभौ ॥२-७१-१॥
kathaṁ gacchati kaunteyo dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasenaḥ savyasācī mādrīputrau ca tāvubhau ॥2-71-1॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - ambidextrous; माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the two sons of Madri; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both;]

How does Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti and king of dharma, proceed? And what of Bhimasena, Arjuna the ambidextrous, and the two sons of Madri, those two as well? (2-71-1)
धौम्यश्चैव कथं क्षत्तर्द्रौपदी वा तपस्विनी। श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वं तेषामङ्गविचेष्टितम् ॥२-७१-२॥
dhaumyaś caiva kathaṃ kṣattar draupadī vā tapasvinī। śrotum icchāmy ahaṃ sarvaṃ teṣām aṅgaviceṣṭitam ॥2-71-2॥

वस्त्रेण संवृत्य मुखं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। बाहू विशालौ कृत्वा तु भीमो गच्छति पाण्डवः ॥२-७१-३॥
vastreṇa saṁvṛtya mukhaṁ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu bhīmo gacchati pāṇḍavaḥ ॥2-71-3॥
[वस्त्रेण (vastreṇa) - with a cloth; संवृत्य (saṁvṛtya) - having covered; मुखं (mukhaṁ) - face; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; विशालौ (viśālau) - large; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तु (tu) - but; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava;]
(Having covered his face with a cloth, Kunti's son Yudhishthira, but Bhima, having made his arms large, the Pandava goes.)
Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, covered his face with a cloth, while Bhima, the Pandava, walked with his large arms outstretched. (2-71-3)
सिकता वपन्सव्यसाची राजानमनुगच्छति। माद्रीपुत्रः सहदेवो मुखमालिप्य गच्छति ॥२-७१-४॥
sikatā vapansavyasācī rājānamanugacchati। mādrīputraḥ sahadevo mukham ālipya gacchati ॥2-71-4॥
[सिकता (sikatā) - sand; वपन (vapan) - shaving; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Arjuna; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; माद्रीपुत्रः (mādrīputraḥ) - son of Mādrī; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; मुखम् (mukham) - face; आलिप्य (ālipya) - having smeared; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Sand, shaving, Savyasācī (Arjuna) follows the king. The son of Mādrī, Sahadeva, having smeared his face, goes. (2-71-4))
Savyasācī (Arjuna) follows the king carrying sand and shaving tools. Sahadeva, the son of Mādrī, proceeds with his face smeared. (2-71-4)
पांसूपलिप्तसर्वाङ्गो नकुलश्चित्तविह्वलः। दर्शनीयतमो लोके राजानमनुगच्छति ॥२-७१-५॥
pāṃsūpaliptasarvāṅgo nakulaścittavihvalaḥ। darśanīyatamo loke rājānamanugacchati ॥2-71-5॥
[पांसू (pāṃsū) - dust; उपलिप्त (upalipta) - smeared; सर्वाङ्गः (sarvāṅgaḥ) - all-limbed; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; चित्तविह्वलः (cittavihvalaḥ) - mind-agitated; दर्शनीयतमः (darśanīyatamaḥ) - most handsome; लोके (loke) - in the world; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows;]
(With all his limbs smeared with dust, Nakula, his mind agitated, the most handsome in the world, follows the king.)
Nakula, his entire body covered in dust and his mind distraught, the most handsome man in the world, follows the king. (2-71-5)
कृष्णा केशैः प्रतिच्छाद्य मुखमायतलोचना। दर्शनीया प्ररुदती राजानमनुगच्छति ॥२-७१-६॥
kṛṣṇā keśaiḥ praticchādya mukham āyata-locanā। darśanīyā prarudatī rājānam anugacchati ॥2-71-6॥
[कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - dark-complexioned (one); केशैः (keśaiḥ) - with hair; प्रतिच्छाद्य (praticchādya) - having covered; मुखम् (mukham) - face; आयतलोचना (āyata-locanā) - wide-eyed (one); दर्शनीया (darśanīyā) - beautiful (one); प्ररुदती (prarudatī) - weeping intensely; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows;]
(The dark-complexioned (one), having covered her face with her hair, the wide-eyed, beautiful (one), weeping intensely, follows the king.)
The dark-complexioned, wide-eyed and beautiful woman, covering her face with her hair and weeping intensely, follows the king. (2-71-6)
धौम्यो याम्यानि सामानि रौद्राणि च विशां पते। गायन्गच्छति मार्गेषु कुशानादाय पाणिना ॥२-७१-७॥
dhaumyo yāmyāni sāmāni raudrāṇi ca viśāṃ pate। gāyaṅgacchati mārgeṣu kuśānādāya pāṇinā ॥2-71-7॥
[धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya (proper noun); याम्यानि (yāmyāni) - southern (related to Yama); सामानि (sāmāni) - chants of Sāma Veda; रौद्राणि (raudrāṇi) - related to Rudra; च (ca) - and; विशाम् (viśām) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; (vocative) गायन् (gāyan) - singing; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; मार्गेषु (mārgeṣu) - on the paths; कुशान् (kuśān) - sacred grasses; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (his) hand;]
(Dhaumya, O lord of the peoples, singing southern Sāma chants and Rudra chants, goes on the paths, having taken sacred grasses with (his) hand.)
Dhaumya, singing the southern Sāma and Rudra chants, proceeds along the paths, holding sacred grasses in his hand, O lord of the people. (2-71-7)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

Dhṛtarāṣṭra said:
विविधानीह रूपाणि कृत्वा गच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः। तन्ममाचक्ष्व विदुर कस्मादेवं व्रजन्ति ते ॥२-७१-८॥
vividhāni iha rūpāṇi kṛtvā gacchanti pāṇḍavāḥ। tan mama ācakṣva vidura kasmāt evaṃ vrajanti te ॥2-71-8॥
[विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; diverse; इह (iha) - here; in this situation; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; appearances; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; after making; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - they go; they proceed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; for me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; explain; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; for what reason; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; व्रजन्ति (vrajanti) - they go; they proceed; ते (te) - they; those;]
(Various forms here having made, the Pāṇḍavas go. That to me tell, O Vidura, why thus they go.)
The Pāṇḍavas assume various forms and go forth. Tell me, O Vidura, why do they proceed in this way? (2-71-8)
विदुर उवाच॥

निकृतस्यापि ते पुत्रैर्हृते राज्ये धनेषु च। न धर्माच्चलते बुद्धिर्धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥२-७१-९॥
nikṛtasyāpi te putrair hṛte rājye dhaneṣu ca। na dharmāc calate buddhir dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ॥2-71-9॥
[निकृतस्यापि (nikṛtasyāpi) - even of one who has been deceived; ते (te) - your; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; राज्ये (rājye) - kingdom; धनेषु (dhaneṣu) - in wealth; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from dharma; चलते (calate) - moves; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise;]
(Even when deceived, with his kingdom and wealth taken away by your sons, the mind of the wise Dharmarāja does not move from dharma.)
Even though your sons have deceitfully taken away his kingdom and wealth, the wise Dharmarāja's mind does not stray from righteousness. (2-71-9)
योऽसौ राजा घृणी नित्यं धार्तराष्ट्रेषु भारत। निकृत्या क्रोधसन्तप्तो नोन्मीलयति लोचने ॥२-७१-१०॥
yo'sau rājā ghṛṇī nityaṃ dhārtarāṣṭreṣu bhārata। nikṛtyā krodhasantapto nonmīlayati locane ॥2-71-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; राजा (rājā) - king; घृणी (ghṛṇī) - compassionate; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu) - towards the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; क्रोधसन्तप्तः (krodhasantaptaḥ) - burning with anger; न (na) - not; उन्मीलयति (unmīlayati) - opens; लोचने (locane) - eyes;]
(Who that king, compassionate, always towards the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O Bhārata, by deceit, burning with anger, does not open (his) eyes.)
O Bhārata, that king, who is always compassionate towards the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, does not open his eyes due to deceit and being consumed by anger. (2-71-10)
नाहं जनं निर्दहेयं दृष्ट्वा घोरेण चक्षुषा। स पिधाय मुखं राजा तस्माद्गच्छति पाण्डवः ॥२-७१-११॥
nāhaṃ janaṃ nirdahēyaṃ dṛṣṭvā ghōrēṇa cakṣuṣā। sa pidhāya mukhaṃ rājā tasmādgacchati pāṇḍavaḥ ॥2-71-11॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जनम् (janam) - person; निर्दहेयम् (nirdaheyaṃ) - should burn completely; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; घोरेण (ghōrēṇa) - with terrible; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - eye; सः (saḥ) - he; पिधाय (pidhāya) - having covered; मुखम् (mukham) - face; राजा (rājā) - king; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava;]
(Not I person should burn completely having seen with terrible eye; he having covered face king therefore goes Pāṇḍava;)
I would not burn a person by looking at him with a terrible eye; therefore, the king, having covered his face, goes away, O Pāṇḍava. (2-71-11)
यथा च भीमो व्रजति तन्मे निगदतः शृणु। बाह्वोर्बले नास्ति समो ममेति भरतर्षभ ॥२-७१-१२॥
yathā ca bhīmo vrajati tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu। bāhvorbale nāsti samo mameti bharatarṣabha ॥2-71-12॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in what manner; च (ca) - and; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; (name of a person); व्रजति (vrajati) - goes; proceeds; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निगदतः (nigadataḥ) - speaking; telling; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - of the arms; बले (bale) - in strength; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; समः (samaḥ) - equal; मम (mama) - to me; इति (iti) - thus; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(As and Bhīma goes, that to me speaking hear. Of the arms in strength not is equal to me thus, O best of the Bharatas.)
Listen as I tell you how Bhīma proceeds. In the strength of arms, there is none equal to me, O best of the Bharatas. (2-71-12)
बाहू विशालौ कृत्वा तु तेन भीमोऽपि गच्छति। बाहू दर्शयमानो हि बाहुद्रविणदर्पितः ॥ चिकीर्षन्कर्म शत्रुभ्यो बाहुद्रव्यानुरूपतः ॥२-७१-१३॥
bāhū viśālau kṛtvā tu tena bhīmo'pi gacchati। bāhū darśayamāno hi bāhudraviṇadarpiṭaḥ ॥ cikīrṣan karma śatrubhyo bāhudravyānurūpataḥ ॥2-71-13॥
[बाहू (bāhū) - arms; विशालौ (viśālau) - large; wide; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; having placed; तु (tu) - but; तेन (tena) - by him; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; अपि (api) - also; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; दर्शयमानः (darśayamānaḥ) - showing; displaying; हि (hi) - indeed; बाहुद्रविणदर्पितः (bāhudraviṇadarpiṭaḥ) - proud of the wealth of his arms; चिकीर्षन् (cikīrṣan) - desiring to do; कर्म (karma) - action; शत्रुभ्यः (śatrubhyaḥ) - to the enemies; बाहुद्रव्य (bāhudravya) - the strength of arms; अनुरूपतः (anurūpataḥ) - according to;]
(Having made his arms large, Bhima also goes by him. Showing his arms, indeed, proud of the wealth of his arms, desiring to do action to the enemies according to the strength of his arms. (2-71-13))
Bhima, having made his arms wide, also proceeds by him. Displaying his arms, indeed, proud of the wealth of his arms, wishing to act against the enemies according to the strength of his arms. (2-71-13)
प्रदिशञ्शरसम्पातान्कुन्तीपुत्रोऽर्जुनस्तदा। सिकता वपन्सव्यसाची राजानमनुगच्छति ॥२-७१-१४॥
pradiśañ śarasampātān kuntīputro 'rjunastadā। sikatā vapan savyasācī rājānam anugacchati ॥2-71-14॥
[प्रदिशन् (pradiśan) - pointing out; शरसम्पातान् (śarasampātān) - arrows' showers; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - Kuntī's son; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तदा (tadā) - then; सिकता (sikatā) - sand; वपन (vapan) - casting; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasācī (ambidextrous, Arjuna); राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows;]
(Pointing out showers of arrows, Kuntī's son Arjuna then, casting sand, Savyasācī follows the king.)
Then Arjuna, the son of Kuntī, known as Savyasācī, pointed out the showers of arrows and, casting sand, followed the king. (2-71-14)
असक्ताः सिकतास्तस्य यथा सम्प्रति भारत। असक्तं शरवर्षाणि तथा मोक्ष्यति शत्रुषु ॥२-७१-१५॥
asaktāḥ sikatās tasya yathā samprati bhārata। asaktaṃ śaravarṣāṇi tathā mokṣyati śatruṣu ॥2-71-15॥
[असक्ताः (asaktāḥ) - unattached; not adhering; सिकताः (sikatāḥ) - sand grains; तस्य (tasya) - of him; यथा (yathā) - just as; सम्प्रति (samprati) - now; at present; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; असक्तं (asaktam) - unattached; not adhering; शरवर्षाणि (śaravarṣāṇi) - showers of arrows; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; मोक्ष्यति (mokṣyati) - will release; will let go; शत्रुषु (śatruṣu) - upon the enemies;]
(Unattached sand grains of him just as now, O Bhārata, unattached (he) showers of arrows so will release upon the enemies.)
O Bhārata, just as his sand grains are now unattached, so too will he release showers of arrows unattached upon the enemies. (2-71-15)
न मे कश्चिद्विजानीयान्मुखमद्येति भारत। मुखमालिप्य तेनासौ सहदेवोऽपि गच्छति ॥२-७१-१६॥
na me kaścid vijānīyān mukham adya iti bhārata। mukham ālipya tena asau sahadevaḥ api gacchati ॥2-71-16॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; विजानीयात् (vijānīyāt) - should recognize; मुखम् (mukham) - face; अद्य (adya) - today; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मुखम् (mukham) - face; आलिप्य (ālipya) - having smeared; तेन (tena) - with that; असौ (asau) - he; सहदेवः (sahadevaḥ) - Sahadeva; अपि (api) - also; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Not my anyone should recognize face today thus O Bhārata. Face having smeared with that he Sahadeva also goes (2-71-16).)
O Bhārata, let no one recognize my face today. Having smeared his face with that, Sahadeva also goes. (2-71-16)
नाहं मनांस्याददेयं मार्गे स्त्रीणामिति प्रभो। पांसूपचितसर्वाङ्गो नकुलस्तेन गच्छति ॥२-७१-१७॥
nāhaṃ manāṃsyādadeyaṃ mārge strīṇāmiti prabho. pāṃsūpacitasarvāṅgo nakulastena gacchati ॥2-71-17॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; आददेयम् (ādadeyam) - should take; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; पांसू (pāṃsū) - dust; उपचित (upacita) - heaped up; सर्वाङ्गः (sarvāṅgaḥ) - with all limbs; नकुलः (nakulaḥ) - Nakula; तेन (tena) - by that; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(Not I minds should take on the path of women thus O lord. With all limbs covered with heaped-up dust Nakula by that goes.)
O lord, I should not take the minds of women on the path, thus. Therefore, Nakula goes with all his limbs covered in heaped-up dust. (2-71-17)
एकवस्त्रा तु रुदती मुक्तकेशी रजस्वला। शोणिताक्तार्द्रवसना द्रौपदी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२-७१-१८॥
ekavastrā tu rudatī muktakeśī rajasvalā। śoṇitāktārdravasanā draupadī vākyam abravīt ॥2-71-18॥
[एकवस्त्रा (ekavastrā) - wearing a single garment; तु (tu) - but; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; मुक्तकेशी (muktakeśī) - with loose hair; रजस्वला (rajasvalā) - menstruating; शोणिताक्त (śoṇitākta) - stained with blood; आर्द्रवसना (ārdravasanā) - with wet garments; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Wearing a single garment but weeping, with loose hair, menstruating, stained with blood, with wet garments, Draupadī spoke words.)
Draupadī, wearing a single garment, weeping, her hair loose, menstruating, her clothes wet and stained with blood, spoke these words.
यत्कृतेऽहमिमां प्राप्ता तेषां वर्षे चतुर्दशे। हतपत्यो हतसुता हतबन्धुजनप्रियाः ॥२-७१-१९॥
yatkṛte'ham imāṃ prāptā teṣāṃ varṣe caturdaśe। hatapatyo hatasutā hatabandhujanapriyāḥ ॥2-71-19॥
[यत्कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; अहम् (aham) - I; इमां (imām) - this (state); प्राप्ता (prāptā) - have obtained; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; वर्षे (varṣe) - in the year; चतुर्दशे (caturdaśe) - fourteenth; हतपत्यः (hatapatyaḥ) - whose husbands are slain; हतसुताः (hatasutāḥ) - whose sons are slain; हतबन्धुजनप्रियाः (hatabandhujanapriyāḥ) - whose dear kinsmen are slain;]
(For whose sake I have obtained this (state), in the fourteenth year of them, whose husbands are slain, whose sons are slain, whose dear kinsmen are slain.)
For whose sake I have come to this, in the fourteenth year, their husbands, sons, and dear kinsmen have been slain. (2-71-19)
बन्धुशोणितदिग्धाङ्ग्यो मुक्तकेश्यो रजस्वलाः। एवं कृतोदका नार्यः प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति गजाह्वयम् ॥२-७१-२०॥
bandhuśoṇitadigdhāṅgyo muktakeśyo rajasvalāḥ। evaṃ kṛtodakā nāryaḥ pravekṣyanti gajāhvayam ॥2-71-20॥

(Alas, alas, our protectors go; observe such (a thing). Thus, the citizens, greatly afflicted by sorrow, indeed cry out all around.)

(Rāhu devoured the sun on a day that is not a festival, O lord of the people. A meteor also, having moved to the left, shattered the city.)

(Thus these great omens go to the forest to the Pāṇḍava, for the destruction of the Bhāratas, O king, due to your evil counsel.)

नारदश्च सभामध्ये कुरूणामग्रतः स्थितः। महर्षिभिः परिवृतो रौद्रं वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥२-७१-२९॥
nāradaś ca sabhāmadhye kurūṇām agrataḥ sthitaḥ। maharṣibhiḥ parivṛto raudraṃ vākyam uvāca ha ॥2-71-29॥

(From here, in the fourteenth year, the Kauravas will perish here by the offence of Duryodhana and by the strength of Bhima and Arjuna.)
From this point, in the fourteenth year, the Kauravas will be destroyed here due to Duryodhana's offence and by the strength of Bhima and Arjuna. (2-71-30)
इत्युक्त्वा दिवमाक्रम्य क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत। ब्राह्मीं श्रियं सुविपुलां बिभ्रद्देवर्षिसत्तमः ॥२-७१-३१॥
ity uktvā divam ākrāmya kṣipram antaradhīyata. brāhmīṃ śriyaṃ suvipulāṃ bibhrad devarṣi-sattamaḥ ॥2-71-31॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; आक्रम्य (ākrāmya) - having ascended; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; ब्राह्मीं (brāhmīṃ) - of Brahmā; श्रियम् (śriyam) - splendour; सुविपुलाम् (suvipulām) - very great; बिभ्रत् (bibhrat) - bearing; देवर्षिसत्तमः (devarṣi-sattamaḥ) - the best of divine sages;]
(Thus having spoken, having ascended heaven, he quickly disappeared. Bearing the very great splendour of Brahmā, the best of divine sages.)

ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। द्रोणं द्वीपममन्यन्त राज्यं चास्मै न्यवेदयन् ॥२-७१-३२॥
tato duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ। droṇaṃ dvīpam amanyanta rājyaṃ cāsmai nyavedayan ॥2-71-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - the son of Subala (i.e., Śakuni); द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; द्वीपम् (dvīpam) - island; अमन्यन्त (amanyanta) - considered; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - offered;]
(Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and also Śakuni, the son of Subala, considered Droṇa as an island and offered the kingdom to him.)

(Then Droṇa spoke thereupon to Duryodhana, the impatient, to Duḥśāsana and Karṇa and indeed to all the sons of Bharata.)

अवध्यान्पाण्डवानाहुर्देवपुत्रान्द्विजातयः। अहं तु शरणं प्राप्तान्वर्तमानो यथाबलम् ॥२-७१-३४॥
avadhyān pāṇḍavān āhur deva-putrān dvijātayaḥ। ahaṃ tu śaraṇaṃ prāptān vartamāno yathā-balam ॥2-71-34॥
[अवध्यान् (avadhyān) - not to be slain; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; देवपुत्रान् (deva-putrān) - sons of gods; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - the twice-born; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - those who have come; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - being; यथाबलम् (yathā-balam) - according to strength;]
(The twice-born say the Pāṇḍavas, sons of gods, are not to be slain; but I, being as I am, (will protect) those who have come for refuge, according to my strength.)
The twice-born declare that the Pāṇḍavas, sons of gods, are inviolable; but I, for my part, will protect those who have sought my refuge, to the best of my ability. (2-71-34)
गतान्सर्वात्मना भक्त्या धार्तराष्ट्रान्सराजकान्। नोत्सहे समभित्यक्तुं दैवमूलमतः परम् ॥२-७१-३५॥

(The departed, with all (his) soul, with devotion, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra along with their kings, not am I able to wholly abandon, (for) rooted in destiny, therefore, beyond.)
I am not able to completely forsake the departed sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and their kings, with all my soul and devotion, for this is rooted in destiny and beyond (my power). (2-71-35)
धर्मतः पाण्डुपुत्रा वै वनं गच्छन्ति निर्जिताः। ते च द्वादश वर्षाणि वने वत्स्यन्ति कौरवाः ॥२-७१-३६॥

(According to dharma, the sons of Pāṇḍu indeed go to the forest, defeated. They and the Kauravas will dwell in the forest for twelve years.)

चरितब्रह्मचर्याश्च क्रोधामर्षवशानुगाः। वैरं प्रत्यानयिष्यन्ति मम दुःखाय पाण्डवाः ॥२-७१-३७॥

[चरित (carita) - practiced; ब्रह्मचर्याः (brahmacaryāḥ) - celibacy; च (ca) - and; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; अमर्ष (amarṣa) - impatience; वश (vaśa) - control; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers; वैरं (vairaṃ) - enmity; प्रत्य् (praty-) - against; आनयिष्यन्ति (ānayiṣyanti) - will bring; मम (mama) - to me; दुःखाय (duḥkhāya) - for sorrow; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Practiced in celibacy and followers under the control of anger and impatience, the Pāṇḍavas will bring enmity against me for my sorrow.)
The Pāṇḍavas, who have practiced celibacy and are now driven by anger and impatience, will bring enmity against me, causing me sorrow. (2-71-37)

(But by me, Drupada was deprived from his kingdom in the enmity of friendship; for the sake of a son, out of anger, he performed a sacrifice for my destruction, O Bhārata.)
But it was I who deprived Drupada of his kingdom due to our enmity as friends; seeking a son, he performed a sacrifice out of anger for my destruction, O Bhārata. (2-71-38)
याजोपयाजतपसा पुत्रं लेभे स पावकात्। धृष्टद्युम्नं द्रौपदीं च वेदीमध्यात्सुमध्यमाम् ॥२-७१-३९॥

(By the austerity of Yāja and Upayāja, he obtained a son from the fire: Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Draupadī, the slender-waisted, from the midst of the altar.)
Through the austerities of Yāja and Upayāja, he obtained a son from the fire—Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Draupadī, the slender-waisted one, emerged from the center of the altar. (2-71-39)
ज्वालावर्णो देवदत्तो धनुष्मान्कवची शरी। मर्त्यधर्मतया तस्मादिति मां भयमाविशत् ॥२-७१-४०॥

[ज्वालावर्णः (jvālāvarṇaḥ) - having the color of flame; देवदत्तः (devadattaḥ) - named Devadatta; धनुष्मान् (dhanuṣmān) - bearing a bow; कवची (kavacī) - armored; शरी (śarī) - having arrows; मर्त्यधर्मतया (martyadharmatayā) - by the condition of mortality; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - me; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered;]
(Having the color of flame, named Devadatta, bearing a bow, armored, having arrows, by the condition of mortality, therefore, thus, fear entered me.)
Seeing Devadatta, who had the color of flame, bore a bow, was armored and equipped with arrows, and knowing the condition of mortality, therefore, fear entered me. (2-71-40)
गतो हि पक्षतां तेषां पार्षतः पुरुषर्षभः। सृष्टप्राणो भृशतरं तस्माद्योत्स्ये तवारिभिः ॥२-७१-४१॥
gato hi pakṣatāṃ teṣāṃ pārṣataḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। sṛṣṭaprāṇo bhṛśataraṃ tasmādyotsye tavāribhiḥ ॥2-71-41॥
[गतः (gataḥ) - gone; हि (hi) - indeed; पक्षताम् (pakṣatām) - to the side (of); तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - the son of Pṛṣata (i.e., Sātyaki); पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - bull among men; सृष्टप्राणः (sṛṣṭaprāṇaḥ) - having given up life; भृशतरम् (bhṛśataram) - more intensely; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I shall fight; तव (tava) - your; अरिभिः (aribhiḥ) - with enemies;]
(Gone indeed to the side of them is the son of Pṛṣata, bull among men, having given up life; therefore, I shall fight more intensely with your enemies.)
The son of Pṛṣata, Sātyaki, that bull among men, has indeed gone over to their side, having given up his life; therefore, I will fight your enemies even more fiercely. (2-71-41)
मद्वधाय श्रुतो ह्येष लोके चाप्यतिविश्रुतः। नूनं सोऽयमनुप्राप्तस्त्वत्कृते कालपर्ययः ॥२-७१-४२॥
madvadhāya śruto hyeṣa loke cāpyativiśrutaḥ। nūnaṃ so'ymanuprāptastvatkṛte kālaparyayaḥ ॥2-71-42॥
[मद्वधाय (madvadhāya) - for my killing; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; लोके (loke) - in the world; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अतिविश्रुतः (ativiśrutaḥ) - very famous; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - has arrived; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; कालपर्ययः (kālaparyayaḥ) - the change of time;]
(For my killing, this indeed has been heard in the world and also is very famous; certainly, this change of time has now arrived for your sake.)
It is well known in the world, and indeed very famous, that my death was destined; certainly, this destined time has now arrived for your sake. (2-71-42)
त्वरिताः कुरुत श्रेयो नैतदेतावता कृतम्। मुहूर्तं सुखमेवैतत्तालच्छायेव हैमनी ॥२-७१-४३॥
tvaritāḥ kuruta śreyo naitadetāvatā kṛtam। muhūrtaṃ sukhamevaitattālacchāyeva haimanī ॥2-71-43॥
[त्वरिताः (tvaritāḥ) - quick; swift; कुरुत (kuruta) - do; perform; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; auspicious; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एतावता (etāvatā) - by this much; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; accomplished; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; comfort; एव (eva) - only; indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; तालच्छायाय् (tālacchāyāy) - like the shade of a palm tree; इव (iva) - like; as if; हैमनी (haimanī) - of winter; wintry;]
(Quickly do what is better; this is not accomplished by just this much. Happiness for a moment is only like this, like the shade of a palm tree in winter.)
Act swiftly for what is truly good; this much is not sufficient. Momentary happiness is fleeting, like the shade of a palm tree in winter. (2-71-43)
यजध्वं च महायज्ञैर्भोगानश्नीत दत्त च। इतश्चतुर्दशे वर्षे महत्प्राप्स्यथ वैशसम् ॥२-७१-४४॥
yajadhvaṃ ca mahāyajñair bhogān aśnīta datta ca। itaś caturdaśe varṣe mahat prāpsyatha vaiśasam ॥2-71-44॥
[यजध्वं (yajadhvam) - perform sacrifices; च (ca) - and; महायज्ञैः (mahāyajñaiḥ) - with great sacrifices; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; अश्नीत (aśnīta) - enjoy; दत्त (datta) - give; च (ca) - and; इतः (itaḥ) - from now; चतुर्दशे (caturdaśe) - in the fourteenth; वर्षे (varṣe) - year; महत् (mahat) - great; प्राप्स्यथ (prāpsyatha) - you will obtain; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - calamity;]
(Perform sacrifices and with great sacrifices enjoy enjoyments and give. From now, in the fourteenth year, great calamity you will obtain.)
Perform sacrifices and enjoy pleasures with great sacrifices, and give (charity). From now, in the fourteenth year, you will encounter a great calamity. (2-71-44)
दुर्योधन निशम्यैतत्प्रतिपद्य यथेच्छसि। साम वा पाण्डवेयेषु प्रयुङ्क्ष्व यदि मन्यसे ॥२-७१-४५॥
duryodhana niśamyaitat pratipadya yathecchasi। sāma vā pāṇḍaveyeṣu prayuṅkṣva yadi manyase ॥2-71-45॥
[दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; (name of a person); निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रतिपद्य (pratipadya) - having understood; यथा (yathā) - as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; साम (sāma) - conciliation; वा (vā) - or; पाण्डवेयेषु (pāṇḍaveyeṣu) - towards the sons of Pāṇḍu; (in the Pāṇḍavas); प्रयुङ्क्ष्व (prayuṅkṣva) - apply; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(Duryodhana, having heard this and having understood, as you wish, conciliation or (towards) the sons of Pāṇḍu, apply, if you think.)
Duryodhana, after hearing and understanding this, do as you wish; if you think it appropriate, apply conciliation towards the Pāṇḍavas. (2-71-45)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

द्रोणस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम्। सम्यगाह गुरुः क्षत्तरुपावर्तय पाण्डवान् ॥२-७१-४६॥
droṇasya vacanaṃ śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdidam। samyagāha guruḥ kṣattarupāvartaya pāṇḍavān ॥2-71-46॥
[द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; वचनं (vacanam) - word; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; आह (āha) - spoke; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - O Vidura; उपावर्तय (upāvartaya) - bring back; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Having heard the word of Droṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra said this: "The teacher has spoken properly. O Vidura, bring back the Pāṇḍavas.")
After hearing Droṇa's words, Dhṛtarāṣṭra said, "The teacher has spoken rightly. Vidura, bring the Pāṇḍavas back." (2-71-46)
यदि वा न निवर्तन्ते सत्कृता यान्तु पाण्डवाः। सशस्त्ररथपादाता भोगवन्तश्च पुत्रकाः ॥२-७१-४७॥
yadi vā na nivartante satkṛtā yāntu pāṇḍavāḥ। saśastrarathapādātā bhogavantaś ca putrakāḥ ॥2-71-47॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; निवर्तन्ते (nivartante) - they return; सत्कृता (satkṛtāḥ) - honored; यान्तु (yāntu) - let them go; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सशस्त्र (saśastra) - armed; रथ (ratha) - with chariots; पादाता (pādātāḥ) - with infantry; भोगवन्तः (bhogavantaḥ) - possessing enjoyments; च (ca) - and; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - sons;]
(If or not they return, honored, let them go, the Pāṇḍavas; armed, with chariots, with infantry, possessing enjoyments, and sons.)
If, however, they do not return, let the honored Pāṇḍavas go; let the sons, armed, with chariots and infantry, and possessing enjoyments, depart. (2-71-47)
