vanaṃ gateṣu pārtheṣu nirjiteṣu durodare। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ mahārāja tadā cintā samāviśat ॥2-72-1॥
[वनम् (vanam) - forest; गतेषु (gateṣu) - having gone; पार्थेषु (pārtheṣu) - the sons of Pṛthā; निर्जितेषु (nirjiteṣu) - having been defeated; दुरोदरे (durodare) - by Duryodhana; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तदा (tadā) - then; चिन्ता (cintā) - anxiety; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(When the sons of Pṛthā, having been defeated by Duryodhana, had gone to the forest, then anxiety entered Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O great king.)
O great king, when the sons of Pṛthā, having been defeated by Duryodhana, went to the forest, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra was overcome by anxiety. (2-72-1)
तं चिन्तयानमासीनं धृतराष्ट्रं जनेश्वरम्। निःश्वसन्तमनेकाग्रमिति होवाच सञ्जयः ॥२-७२-२॥
taṃ cintayānam-āsīnaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janeśvaram। niḥśvasantam-anekāgram-iti hovāca sañjayaḥ ॥2-72-2॥

(Him pondering, seated, Dhritarashtra, lord of men, sighing, with distracted mind, thus said Sanjaya.)
Seeing Dhritarashtra, the lord of men, seated and pondering, sighing with a distracted mind, Sanjaya thus spoke. (2-72-2)
अवाप्य वसुसम्पूर्णां वसुधां वसुधाधिप। प्रव्राज्य पाण्डवान्राज्याद्राजन्किमनुशोचसि ॥२-७२-३॥

(Having obtained the earth filled with riches, O lord of the earth, having banished the Pāṇḍavas from the kingdom, O king, why do you grieve?)
O king, even after having acquired the earth filled with riches and banishing the Pāṇḍavas from the kingdom, why do you still grieve? (2-72-3)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

अशोच्यं तु कुतस्तेषां येषां वैरं भविष्यति। पाण्डवैर्युद्धशौण्डैर्हि मित्रवद्भिर्महारथैः ॥२-७२-४॥
aśocyaṃ tu kutasteṣāṃ yeṣāṃ vairaṃ bhaviṣyati। pāṇḍavairyuddhaśauṇḍairhi mitravadbhirmahārathaiḥ ॥2-72-4॥
[अशोच्यं (aśocyam) - not to be grieved; तु (tu) - but; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; तेषां (teṣām) - of those; येषां (yeṣām) - of whom; वैरं (vairam) - enmity; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; युद्धशौण्डैः (yuddhaśauṇḍaiḥ) - by those skilled in battle; हि (hi) - indeed; मित्रवत् (mitravat) - like friends; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - by great chariot-warriors;]
(But how can there be grief for those of whom enmity will arise, by the Pāṇḍavas, by those skilled in battle, indeed, by great chariot-warriors like friends?)
But how can there be sorrow for those against whom enmity will arise from the Pāṇḍavas, who are skilled in battle and are great chariot-warriors, yet fight like friends? (2-72-4)

tavedaṃ sukṛtaṃ rājan mahadvairaṃ bhaviṣyati। vināśaḥ sarvalokasya sānubandho bhaviṣyati ॥2-72-5॥
[तव (tava) - of you; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सुकृतं (sukṛtaṃ) - well-done (deed); राजन् (rājan) - O king; महद् (mahat) - great; वैरं (vairaṃ) - enmity; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all worlds; सानुबन्धः (sānubandhaḥ) - with connection (with associates/relations); भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(This well-done deed of yours, O king, will become great enmity. The destruction of all worlds, along with their connections, will be.)
O king, this act of yours will lead to great enmity. The destruction of all worlds, along with their associates, will occur. (2-72-5)
वार्यमाणोऽपि भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च। पाण्डवानां प्रियां भार्यां द्रौपदीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥२-७२-६॥
vāryamāṇo'pi bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca। pāṇḍavānāṃ priyāṃ bhāryāṃ draupadīṃ dharmacāriṇīm ॥2-72-6॥
[वार्यमाणः (vāryamāṇaḥ) - being restrained; अपि (api) - even; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; प्रियाम् (priyām) - dear; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; धर्मचारिणीम् (dharmacāriṇīm) - righteous-conducting;]
(Even though being restrained by Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Vidura, (he seized) Draupadī, the dear wife of the Pāṇḍavas, who follows righteousness.)
Even though Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Vidura tried to restrain him, he seized Draupadī, the beloved and righteous wife of the Pāṇḍavas. (2-72-6)
प्राहिणोदानयेहेति पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव। सूतपुत्रं सुमन्दात्मा निर्लज्जः प्रातिकामिनम् ॥२-७२-७॥
prāhiṇodānayeheti putro duryodhanastava। sūtaputraṃ sumandātmā nirlajjaḥ prātikāminam ॥2-72-7॥

(Sent (he), 'Bring (him) here,' thus, the son Duryodhana of yours, the son of the charioteer, very dull-minded, shameless, desiring to oppose.)
Your son Duryodhana, who is very dull-minded, shameless, and desirous of opposition, sent for the son of the charioteer, saying, 'Bring him here.' (2-72-7)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

यस्मै देवाः प्रयच्छन्ति पुरुषाय पराभवम्। बुद्धिं तस्यापकर्षन्ति सोऽपाचीनानि पश्यति ॥२-७२-८॥
yasmai devāḥ prayacchanti puruṣāya parābhavam। buddhiṃ tasyāpakarṣanti so'pācīnani paśyati ॥2-72-8॥
[यस्मै (yasmai) - to whom; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - grant; पुरुषाय (puruṣāya) - to a person; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - ruin; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; तस्य (tasya) - his; अपकर्षन्ति (apakarṣanti) - draw away; सः (saḥ) - he; अपाचीनानि (apācīnani) - backward things; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(To whom the gods grant ruin, they draw away his intellect; he sees only backward things.)
When the gods intend ruin for a person, they take away his intellect, so that he perceives only what is backward. (2-72-8)
बुद्धौ कलुषभूतायां विनाशे प्रत्युपस्थिते। अनयो नयसङ्काशो हृदयान्नापसर्पति ॥२-७२-९॥
buddhau kaluṣabhūtāyāṃ vināśe pratyupasthite। anayo nayasaṅkāśo hṛdayānnāpasarpati ॥2-72-9॥
[बुद्धौ (buddhau) - in the intellect; कलुषभूतायां (kaluṣabhūtāyāṃ) - having become impure; विनाशे (vināśe) - in destruction; प्रत्युपस्थिते (pratyupasthite) - when present; अनयः (anayaḥ) - unrighteousness; नयसङ्काशः (naya-saṅkāśaḥ) - appearing as righteousness; हृदयात् (hṛdayāt) - from the heart; न (na) - not; अपसर्पति (apasarpati) - departs;]
(In the intellect having become impure, when destruction is present, unrighteousness appearing as righteousness does not depart from the heart.)
When the intellect is tainted and destruction is imminent, unrighteousness disguised as righteousness does not leave the heart. (2-72-9)
अनर्थाश्चार्थरूपेण अर्थाश्चानर्थरूपिणः। उत्तिष्ठन्ति विनाशान्ते नरं तच्चास्य रोचते ॥२-७२-१०॥
anarthāś cārtharūpeṇa arthāś cānar tharūpiṇaḥ। uttiṣṭhanti vināśānte naraṃ taccāsya rocate ॥2-72-10॥
[अनर्थाः (anarthāḥ) - undesirable things; च (ca) - and; अर्थरूपेण (artharūpeṇa) - in the form of desirable things; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - desirable things; च (ca) - and; अनर्थरूपिणः (anartharūpiṇaḥ) - in the form of undesirable things; उत्तिष्ठन्ति (uttiṣṭhanti) - arise; विनाशान्ते (vināśānte) - at the end of destruction; नरं (naraṃ) - man; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; रोचते (rocate) - pleases;]
(Undesirable things and (those) in the form of desirable things, desirable things and (those) in the form of undesirable things arise; at the end of destruction, to man, that also pleases him.)
Undesirable things appearing as desirable, and desirable things appearing as undesirable, arise; at the end of ruin, even that pleases a man. (2-72-10)
न कालो दण्डमुद्यम्य शिरः कृन्तति कस्यचित्। कालस्य बलमेतावद्विपरीतार्थदर्शनम् ॥२-७२-११॥
na kālo daṇḍamudyamya śiraḥ kṛntati kasyacit। kālasya balametāvadviparītārthadarśanam ॥2-72-11॥
[न (na) - not; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - staff; उद्यस्य (udyamya) - having raised; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; कृन्तति (kṛntati) - cuts; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; बलम् (balam) - power; एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; विपरीतार्थदर्शनम् (viparītārthadarśanam) - seeing the opposite meaning;]
(Not time, having raised a staff, cuts the head of anyone. The power of time is this much: seeing the opposite meaning.)
Time does not literally raise a staff and cut off anyone's head. The power of time is such that it causes people to perceive the opposite of the true meaning. (2-72-11)
आसादितमिदं घोरं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्। पाञ्चालीमपकर्षद्भिः सभामध्ये तपस्विनीम् ॥२-७२-१२॥
āsāditam idaṃ ghoraṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। pāñcālīm apakarṣadbhiḥ sabhāmadhye tapasvinīm ॥2-72-12॥
[आसादितम् (āsāditam) - attained; reached; इदं (idaṃ) - this; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; dreadful; तुमुलम् (tumulam) - tumultuous; uproarious; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; causing hair to stand on end; पाञ्चालीम् (pāñcālīm) - Panchali; Draupadi; अपकर्षद्भिः (apakarṣadbhiḥ) - by those dragging away; by those pulling; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; तपस्विनीम् (tapasvinīm) - the ascetic; the devoted one;]
(This terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising (event) has been reached—Panchali, the ascetic, being dragged away in the midst of the assembly.)
This dreadful and tumultuous event has occurred: Panchali, the devoted one, was dragged away in the midst of the assembly. (2-72-12)
अयोनिजां रूपवतीं कुले जातां विभावरीम्। को नु तां सर्वधर्मज्ञां परिभूय यशस्विनीम् ॥२-७२-१३॥
ayonijāṃ rūpavatīṃ kule jātāṃ vibhāvarīm। ko nu tāṃ sarvadharmajñāṃ paribhūya yaśasvinīm ॥2-72-13॥
[अयोनिजाम् (ayonijām) - not-born-from-womb; रूपवतीम् (rūpavatīm) - beautiful; कुले (kule) - in a noble family; जाताम् (jātām) - born; विभावरीम् (vibhāvarīm) - night; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; ताम् (tām) - her; सर्वधर्मज्ञाम् (sarvadharmajñām) - knower of all dharmas; परिभूय (paribhūya) - disregarding; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - illustrious;]
(Not-born-from-womb, beautiful, born in a noble family, night; who indeed, disregarding her, the knower of all dharmas, illustrious?)
Who indeed would disregard her, the illustrious and beautiful one, not born from a womb, born in a noble family, the knower of all dharmas, the radiant night? (2-72-13)
पर्यानयेत्सभामध्यमृते दुर्द्यूतदेविनम्। स्त्रीधर्मिणीं वरारोहां शोणितेन समुक्षिताम् ॥२-७२-१४॥
paryānayet sabhā-madhyam ṛte durdyūta-devinam। strī-dharmiṇīm varā-rohām śoṇitena samukṣitām ॥2-72-14॥
[पर्यानयेत् (paryānayet) - should bring around; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; अध्यम् (adhyam) - middle; ऋते (ṛte) - except; दुर्द्यूत (durdyūta) - bad gambler; देविनम् (devinam) - the wretched one; स्त्रीधर्मिणीम् (strīdharmiṇīm) - one who follows the duties of a woman; वरारोहाम् (varārohām) - of excellent hips; शोणितेन (śoṇitena) - with blood; समुक्षिताम् (samukṣitām) - besmeared;]
(Should bring around into the assembly, except the wretched bad gambler, the woman who follows the duties of a woman, of excellent hips, besmeared with blood.)

एकवस्त्रां च पाञ्चालीं पाण्डवानभ्यवेक्षतीम्। हृतस्वान्भ्रष्टचित्तांस्तान्हृतदारान्हृतश्रियः ॥२-७२-१५॥
ekavastrāṃ ca pāñcālīṃ pāṇḍavān abhyavekṣatīm। hṛtasvān bhraṣṭacittāṃs tān hṛtadārān hṛtaśriyaḥ ॥2-72-15॥
[एकवस्त्राम् (ekavastrām) - wearing a single garment; च (ca) - and; पाञ्चालीम् (pāñcālīm) - Panchali (Draupadi); पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; अभ्यवेक्षतीम् (abhyavekṣatīm) - looking at; हृतस्वान् (hṛtasvān) - deprived of wealth; भ्रष्टचित्तान् (bhraṣṭacittān) - whose minds were confounded; तान् (tān) - them; हृतदारान् (hṛtadārān) - deprived of wives; हृतश्रियः (hṛtaśriyaḥ) - deprived of prosperity;]
(Wearing a single garment and Panchali, looking at the Pandavas, deprived of wealth, whose minds were confounded, them, deprived of wives, deprived of prosperity.)

विहीनान्सर्वकामेभ्यो दासभाववशं गतान्। धर्मपाशपरिक्षिप्तानशक्तानिव विक्रमे ॥२-७२-१६॥
vihīnān sarvakāmebhyo dāsabhāvavaśaṃ gatān। dharmapāśaparikṣiptānaśaktān iva vikrame ॥2-72-16॥
[विहीनान् (vihīnān) - deprived; सर्वकामेभ्यः (sarvakāmebhyaḥ) - of all desires; दासभाववशं (dāsabhāvavaśam) - under the sway of servitude; गतान् (gatān) - gone; धर्मपाशपरिक्षिप्तान् (dharmapāśaparikṣiptān) - encompassed by the noose of dharma; अशक्तान् (aśaktān) - powerless; इव (iva) - as if; विक्रमे (vikrame) - in action;]
(Deprived of all desires, gone under the sway of servitude, encompassed by the noose of dharma, powerless as if in action.)
Deprived of all desires, subject to servitude, bound by the fetters of dharma, and powerless as if unable to act. (2-72-16)
क्रुद्धाममर्षितां कृष्णां दुःखितां कुरुसंसदि। दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च कटुकान्यभ्यभाषताम् ॥२-७२-१७॥
kruddhām amarṣitāṃ kṛṣṇāṃ duḥkhitāṃ kuru-saṃsadi| duryodhanaś ca karṇaś ca kaṭukāni abhyabhāṣatām ॥2-72-17॥
[क्रुद्धाम् (kruddhām) - angry; अमर्षिताम् (amarṣitām) - indignant; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - distressed; कुरुसंसदि (kuru-saṃsadi) - in the Kuru assembly; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; च (ca) - and; कटुकानि (kaṭukāni) - harsh (words); अभ्यभाषताम् (abhyabhāṣatām) - spoke;]
(Angry, indignant, distressed Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) in the Kuru assembly; Duryodhana and Karṇa spoke harsh (words).)
In the Kuru assembly, Duryodhana and Karṇa spoke harsh words to Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), who was angry, indignant, and distressed. (2-72-17)
तस्याः कृपणचक्षुर्भ्यां प्रदह्येतापि मेदिनी। अपि शेषं भवेदद्य पुत्राणां मम सञ्जय ॥२-७२-१८॥
tasyāḥ kṛpaṇacakṣurbhyāṃ pradahyetāpi medinī। api śeṣaṃ bhavedadya putrāṇāṃ mama sañjaya ॥2-72-18॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; कृपणचक्षुर्भ्यां (kṛpaṇacakṣurbhyāṃ) - with pitiable eyes; प्रदह्येत (pradahyeta) - might be burnt; अपि (api) - even; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth; अपि (api) - even; शेषं (śeṣam) - remnant; भवेत् (bhavet) - might remain; अद्य (adya) - today; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; मम (mama) - my; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - O Sañjaya;]
(Of her, with pitiable eyes, even the earth might be burnt; even a remnant might remain today of my sons, O Sañjaya.)
O Sañjaya, even if the earth were to be scorched by her pitiable gaze, let at least some of my sons survive today. (2-72-18)
भारतानां स्त्रियः सर्वा गान्धार्या सह सङ्गताः। प्राक्रोशन्भैरवं तत्र दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां सभागताम् ॥२-७२-१९॥
bhāratānāṃ striyaḥ sarvā gāndhāryā saha saṅgatāḥ। prākrośanbhairavaṃ tatra dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇāṃ sabhāgatām ॥2-72-19॥

All the women of the Bhāratas, together with Gāndhārī, gathered and, upon seeing Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) present in the assembly, cried out in terror there. (2-72-19)
अग्निहोत्राणि सायाह्ने न चाहूयन्त सर्वशः। ब्राह्मणाः कुपिताश्चासन्द्रौपद्याः परिकर्षणे ॥२-७२-२०॥

आसीन्निष्टानको घोरो निर्घातश्च महानभूत्। दिवोल्काश्चापतन्घोरा राहुश्चार्कमुपाग्रसत् ॥ अपर्वणि महाघोरं प्रजानां जनयन्भयम् ॥२-७२-२१॥

(There was a terrible sound, and a great thunderbolt arose. Terrible meteors fell from the sky, and Rahu seized the sun. Not on a festival day, a very terrible fear was caused among the people.)

(In the same manner, in the chariot-houses, fire appeared; and the banners of the Bharatas were scattered for their welfare.)

(In Duryodhana's fire-sacrifice, jackals cried out terrifyingly; then asses responded from all directions.)

(Then I said there, urged by Vidura: I grant a boon to Kṛṣṇā, whatever she desires.)

(There Panchali chose the Pandavas of immeasurable energy; I also permitted those with chariots and with bows.)
There, Panchali (Draupadi) chose the Pandavas of immeasurable energy; I too gave permission for those with chariots and bows. (2-72-26)
अथाब्रवीन्महाप्राज्ञो विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित्। एतदन्ताः स्थ भरता यद्वः कृष्णा सभां गता ॥२-७२-२७॥
athābravīn mahāprājño viduraḥ sarvadharmavit। etadantāḥ stha bharatā yad vaḥ kṛṣṇā sabhāṃ gatā ॥2-72-27॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the greatly wise; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; सर्वधर्मवित् (sarvadharmavit) - knower of all dharmas; एतदन्ताः (etadantāḥ) - at the end of this; स्थ (stha) - you are; भरताः (bharatāḥ) - O Bharatas; यत् (yat) - when; वः (vaḥ) - your; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; गता (gatā) - has gone;]
(Then the greatly wise Vidura, knower of all dharmas, spoke: "At the end of this, you are, O Bharatas, when your Kṛṣṇā has gone to the assembly.")
Then the greatly wise Vidura, knower of all dharmas, spoke: "O Bharatas, this is the end for you, now that your Kṛṣṇā has entered the assembly." (2-72-27)

[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); पाञ्चालराजस्य (pāñcālarājasya) - of the king of the Pāñcālas; सुतैषा (sutaiṣā) - daughter, this (feminine); श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; अनुत्तमा (anuttamā) - unsurpassed; पाञ्चाली (pāñcālī) - the Pāñcālī (Draupadī); पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; एतान् (etān) - these; दैवसृष्टा (daivasṛṣṭā) - created by fate; उपसर्पति (upasarpati) - approaches;]
(This is the unsurpassed prosperity, the daughter of the king of the Pāñcālas; Pāñcālī, created by fate, approaches these Pāṇḍavas.)
This is the unsurpassed fortune, the daughter of the king of the Pāñcālas; Pāñcālī, created by destiny, approaches these Pāṇḍavas. (2-72-28)
तस्याः पार्थाः परिक्लेशं न क्षंस्यन्तेऽत्यमर्षणाः। वृष्णयो वा महेष्वासाः पाञ्चाला वा महौजसः ॥२-७२-२९॥
tasyāḥ pārthāḥ parikleśaṃ na kṣaṃsyante'tyamarṣaṇāḥ। vṛṣṇayo vā maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālā vā mahaujasaḥ ॥2-72-29॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; (referring to Draupadī) पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); परिक्लेशम् (parikleśam) - great distress; न (na) - not; क्षंस्यन्ते (kṣaṃsyante) - will tolerate; अत्यमरषणाः (atyamarṣaṇāḥ) - extremely intolerant; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis (clan of Kṛṣṇa); वा (vā) - or; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas (allies of the Pāṇḍavas); वा (vā) - or; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of great energy;]
(Of her, the sons of Pṛthā will not tolerate great distress, being extremely intolerant; the Vṛṣṇis or the great archers, or the Pāñcālas of great energy.)
Her sons, the Pāṇḍavas, will not tolerate her great distress, being extremely intolerant; nor will the Vṛṣṇis, the great archers, or the powerful Pāñcālas. (2-72-29)
तेन सत्याभिसन्धेन वासुदेवेन रक्षिताः। आगमिष्यति बीभत्सुः पाञ्चालैरभिरक्षितः ॥२-७२-३०॥
tena satyābhisandhena vāsudevena rakṣitāḥ। āgamiṣyati bībhatsuḥ pāñcālair abhirakṣitaḥ ॥2-72-30॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; सत्य-अभिसन्धेन (satya-abhisandhena) - with truthfulness; वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vāsudeva; रक्षिताः (rakṣitāḥ) - protected; आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - will come; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); पाञ्चालैः (pāñcālaiḥ) - by the Pāñcālas; अभिरक्षितः (abhirakṣitaḥ) - well-protected;]
(By him, with truthfulness, by Vāsudeva, (they are) protected. Bībhatsu (Arjuna), well-protected by the Pāñcālas, will come.)
Protected by Vāsudeva, who is steadfast in truth, they are safe. Bībhatsu (Arjuna), well-guarded by the Pāñcālas, will arrive. (2-72-30)
तेषां मध्ये महेष्वासो भीमसेनो महाबलः। आगमिष्यति धुन्वानो गदां दण्डमिवान्तकः ॥२-७२-३१॥
teṣāṃ madhye maheṣvāso bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। āgamiṣyati dhunvāno gadāṃ daṇḍamivantakaḥ ॥2-72-31॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - great archer; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; आगमिष्यति (āgamiṣyati) - will come; धुन्वानः (dhunvānaḥ) - wielding; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - staff; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - Yama (the destroyer);]
(Of them, in the midst, the great archer Bhīmasena, of great strength, will come, wielding the mace like a staff, like Yama (the destroyer).)
Among them, the mighty archer Bhīmasena, endowed with great strength, will come forward, wielding his mace like a staff, resembling Yama, the god of death. (2-72-31)
ततो गाण्डीवनिर्घोषं श्रुत्वा पार्थस्य धीमतः। गदावेगं च भीमस्य नालं सोढुं नराधिपाः ॥२-७२-३२॥
tato gāṇḍīvanirghoṣaṃ śrutvā pārthasya dhīmataḥ। gadāvegaṃ ca bhīmasya nālaṃ soḍhuṃ narādhipāḥ ॥2-72-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गाण्डीव-निर्घोषम् (gāṇḍīva-nirghoṣam) - Gāṇḍīva-bow's sound; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (Arjuna); धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise; गदा-वेगम् (gadā-vegam) - mace's force; च (ca) - and; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - capable; सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to endure; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings;]
(Then, having heard the sound of the Gāṇḍīva bow of the wise Pārtha and the force of the mace of Bhīma, the kings were not capable to endure.)
Then, hearing the sound of Arjuna's Gāṇḍīva bow and the force of Bhīma's mace, the kings could not withstand it. (2-72-32)
तत्र मे रोचते नित्यं पार्थैः सार्धं न विग्रहः। कुरुभ्यो हि सदा मन्ये पाण्डवाञ्शक्तिमत्तरान् ॥२-७२-३३॥
tatra me rocate nityaṃ pārthaiḥ sārdhaṃ na vigrahaḥ। kurubhyo hi sadā manye pāṇḍavāñśaktimattarān ॥2-72-33॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - to me; रोचते (rocate) - is pleasing; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - with the sons of Pṛthā; सार्धं (sārdham) - together; न (na) - not; विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; कुरुभ्यः (kurubhyaḥ) - to the Kurus; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; मnye (manye) - I think; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; शक्तिमत्तरान् (śaktimattarān) - more powerful;]
(There, to me, always, with the sons of Pṛthā, together, not conflict. To the Kurus, indeed, always, I think, the Pāṇḍavas (are) more powerful.)
Therefore, it always pleases me that there is no conflict with the sons of Pṛthā. Indeed, I always think that the Pāṇḍavas are more powerful than the Kurus. (2-72-33)
तथा हि बलवान्राजा जरासन्धो महाद्युतिः। बाहुप्रहरणेनैव भीमेन निहतो युधि ॥२-७२-३४॥
tathā hi balavān rājā jarāsandho mahādyutiḥ। bāhu-praharaṇenaiva bhīmena nihato yudhi ॥2-72-34॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; राजा (rājā) - king; जरासन्धः (jarāsandhaḥ) - Jarāsandha; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor; बाहुप्रहरणेन (bāhu-praharaṇena) - by arm as weapon; एव (eva) - only; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhīma; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(Thus indeed the strong king Jarāsandha of great splendor was slain in battle by Bhīma only with the arm as weapon.)
Thus, the mighty and illustrious king Jarāsandha was killed in battle by Bhīma using only his arms as weapons. (2-72-34)
तस्य ते शम एवास्तु पाण्डवैर्भरतर्षभ। उभयोः पक्षयोर्युक्तं क्रियतामविशङ्कया ॥२-७२-३५॥
tasya te śama evāstu pāṇḍavair bharatarṣabha। ubhayoḥ pakṣayor yuktaṃ kriyatām aviśaṅkayā ॥2-72-35॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; ते (te) - to you; शमः (śamaḥ) - peace; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; पक्षयोः (pakṣayoḥ) - of the sides; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without doubt;]
(Of him to you let there indeed be peace by the Pāṇḍavas, O bull among the Bharatas. Of both sides, let what is proper be done without doubt.)
Let there be peace for you from him through the Pāṇḍavas, O best of the Bharatas. Let what is proper for both sides be done without any doubt. (2-72-35)
एवं गावल्गणे क्षत्ता धर्मार्थसहितं वचः। उक्तवान्न गृहीतं च मया पुत्रहितेप्सया ॥२-७२-३६॥
evaṃ gāvalgaṇe kṣattā dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ। uktavān na gṛhītaṃ ca mayā putrahitepsayā ॥2-72-36॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गावल्गणे (gāvalgaṇe) - O Gāvalgaṇa; क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the charioteer; धर्मार्थसहितं (dharmārthasahitaṃ) - accompanied by righteousness and purpose; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoke; न (na) - not; गृहीतं (gṛhītaṃ) - accepted; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - by me; पुत्रहितेप्सया (putrahitepsayā) - with the desire for the welfare of the son;]
(Thus, O Gāvalgaṇa, the charioteer spoke speech accompanied by righteousness and purpose; (but) it was not accepted by me, with the desire for the welfare of the son.)
Thus, O Gāvalgaṇa, the charioteer spoke words of righteousness and purpose, but I did not accept them, out of my desire for my son's welfare. (2-72-36)
