tasmin samprasthite kṛṣṇā pṛthāṃ prāpya yaśasvinīm। āpṛcchad bhṛśaduḥkhārtā yāś ca anyās tatra yoṣitaḥ ॥2-70-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; सम्प्रस्थिते (samprasthite) - having set out; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); पृथाम् (pṛthām) - Pṛthā (Kuntī); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - the illustrious; आपृच्छत् (āpṛcchat) - took leave; भृशदुःखार्ता (bhṛśaduḥkhārtā) - greatly afflicted with grief; याः (yāḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; तत्र (tatra) - there; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women;]
(When he had set out, Kṛṣṇā, having reached Pṛthā the illustrious, took leave, greatly afflicted with grief, and so did the other women there.)
When he had departed, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), deeply distressed, approached the renowned Pṛthā (Kuntī) to take leave, and the other women there did likewise. (2-70-1)
यथार्हं वन्दनाश्लेषान्कृत्वा गन्तुमियेष सा। ततो निनादः सुमहान्पाण्डवान्तःपुरेऽभवत् ॥२-७०-२॥
yathārhaṃ vandanāśleṣānkṛtvā gantum iyeṣa sā। tato ninādaḥ sumahān pāṇḍavāntaḥpure'bhavat ॥2-70-2॥

(As appropriate, having made salutations and embraces, she desired to go. Then a very great sound arose in the inner apartments of the Pāṇḍavas.)

कुन्ती च भृशसन्तप्ता द्रौपदीं प्रेक्ष्य गच्छतीम्। शोकविह्वलया वाचा कृच्छ्राद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२-७०-३॥

(O child, sorrow should not be yours, having encountered this great misfortune. You are well-versed in the duties of women, likewise endowed with good conduct and character.)

न त्वां संदेष्टुमर्हामि भर्तॄन्प्रति शुचिस्मिते। साध्वीगुणसमाधानैर्भूषितं ते कुलद्वयम् ॥२-७०-५॥
na tvāṃ sandeṣṭum arhāmi bhartr̥n prati śucismite। sādhvī-guṇa-samādhānaiḥ bhūṣitaṃ te kuladvayam ॥2-70-5॥

(Not you to send (as a messenger) am I worthy, to husbands, towards, O pure-smiled one. With the harmonies of virtuous qualities adorned are your two families.)
O pure-smiled one, I am not worthy to send you as a messenger to your husbands. Both your families are adorned with the harmonies of virtuous qualities. (2-70-5)
सभाग्याः कुरवश्चेमे ये न दग्धास्त्वयानघे। अरिष्टं व्रज पन्थानं मदनुध्यानबृंहिता ॥२-७०-६॥
sabhāgyāḥ kuravaś ceme ye na dagdhās tvayānaghe। ariṣṭaṃ vraja panthānaṃ madanudhyānabṛṃhitā ॥2-70-6॥
[सभाग्याः (sabhāgyāḥ) - fortunate; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kurus; च (ca) - and; इमे (ime) - these; ये (ye) - who; न (na) - not; दग्धाः (dagdhāḥ) - burnt; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघे (anaghe) - O sinless one; अरिष्टं (ariṣṭam) - unharmed; व्रज (vraja) - go; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; मद् (mad) - my; अनुध्यान (anudhyāna) - constant meditation; बृंहिता (bṛṃhitā) - strengthened;]
(Fortunate are these Kurus who have not been burnt by you, O sinless one. Go on the unharmed path, strengthened by my constant meditation.)
These Kurus are indeed fortunate, O sinless one, for they have not been consumed by you. Proceed safely on your path, strengthened by my constant remembrance. (2-70-6)
भाविन्यर्थे हि सत्स्त्रीणां वैक्लव्यं नोपजायते। गुरुधर्माभिगुप्ता च श्रेयः क्षिप्रमवाप्स्यसि ॥२-७०-७॥
bhāvin-yarthe hi sat-strīṇāṃ vaiklavyaṃ nopajāyate. guru-dharmābhiguptā ca śreyaḥ kṣipram avāpsyasi ॥2-70-7॥
[भाविन्यर्थे (bhāvin-yarthe) - in the matter destined to happen; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्स्त्रीणां (sat-strīṇām) - of virtuous women; वैक्लव्यं (vaiklavyaṃ) - despondency; न (na) - not; उपजायते (upajāyate) - arises; गुरुधर्माभिगुप्ता (guru-dharmābhiguptā) - protected by the duty to elders; च (ca) - and; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good fortune; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(In the matter destined to happen, indeed, despondency does not arise for virtuous women; and protected by the duty to elders, you will quickly attain good fortune.)
For virtuous women, there is no despondency regarding what is destined to happen; and being protected by the duty to elders, you will soon attain good fortune. (2-70-7)
सहदेवश्च मे पुत्रः सदावेक्ष्यो वने वसन्। यथेदं व्यसनं प्राप्य नास्य सीदेन्महन्मनः ॥२-७०-८॥
sahadevaś ca me putraḥ sadāvekṣyo vane vasan। yathedaṃ vyasanaṃ prāpya nāsya sīden mahanmanaḥ ॥2-70-8॥

(Sahadeva and my son, always to be watched, dwelling in the forest, so that, having encountered this misfortune, his great mind may not sink.)
Sahadeva, my son, must always be watched while living in the forest, so that, having encountered this misfortune, his great spirit does not become dejected. (2-70-8)
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा देवी स्रवन्नेत्रजलाविला। शोणिताक्तैकवसना मुक्तकेश्यभिनिर्ययौ ॥२-७०-९॥
tathety uktvā tu sā devī sravan-netra-jalā-vilā। śoṇitāktai-ka-vasanā mukta-keśy abhiniryayau ॥2-70-9॥
[तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having thus spoken; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; देवी (devī) - the goddess; स्रवन् (sravan) - flowing; नेत्र (netra) - eye; जल (jala) - water; आविला (āvilā) - clouded; शोणिताक्त (śoṇitākta) - stained with blood; एक (eka) - one; वसना (vasanā) - garment; मुक्तकेशी (muktakeśī) - with loosened hair; अभिनिर्ययौ (abhiniryayau) - she went out;]
(Having thus spoken, but she, the goddess, with eyes clouded by flowing water, with a single garment stained with blood, with loosened hair, went out.)
Having said this, the goddess, her eyes clouded with tears, wearing a single blood-stained garment and her hair disheveled, went out. (2-70-9)
तां क्रोशन्तीं पृथा दुःखादनुवव्राज गच्छतीम्। अथापश्यत्सुतान्सर्वान्हृताभरणवाससः ॥२-७०-१०॥
tāṃ krośantīṃ pṛthā duḥkhād anuvavrāja gacchatīm। athāpaśyat sutān sarvān hṛtābharaṇavāsasaḥ ॥2-70-10॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; क्रोशन्तीं (krośantīm) - crying; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; अनुवव्राज (anuvavrāja) - followed; गच्छतीम् (gacchatīm) - going; अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; हृत (hṛta) - deprived; आभरण (ābharaṇa) - of ornaments; वाससः (vāsasaḥ) - of garments;]
(Her crying, Pṛthā, from sorrow, followed (her) going. Then saw (her) sons all deprived of ornaments and garments.)

रुरुचर्मावृततनून्ह्रिया किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखान्। परैः परीतान्संहृष्टैः सुहृद्भिश्चानुशोचितान् ॥२-७०-११॥
rurucarmāvṛtatanūn hriyā kiñcid avāṅmukhān। paraiḥ parītān saṃhṛṣṭaiḥ suhṛdbhiś cānuśocitān ॥2-70-11॥
[रुरुचर्म (rurucarma) - deerskin; आवृत (āvṛta) - covered; तनून् (tanūn) - bodies; ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; अवाङ्मुखान् (avāṅmukhān) - with faces turned down; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; परीतान् (parītān) - surrounded; संहृष्टैः (saṃhṛṣṭaiḥ) - by delighted; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - by friends; च (ca) - and; अनुशोचितान् (anuśocitān) - lamented; ॥२-७०-११॥ (॥2-70-11॥) -;]
(With bodies covered with deerskin, with modesty, somewhat with faces turned down, surrounded by others, by delighted friends and lamented.)

तदवस्थान्सुतान्सर्वानुपसृत्यातिवत्सला। सस्वजानावदच्छोकात्तत्तद्विलपती बहु ॥२-७०-१२॥
tadavasthān sutān sarvān upasṛtyātivatsalā। sasvajānāvadac chokāt tat-tad vilapatī bahu ॥2-70-12॥
[तदवस्थान् (tad-avasthān) - those situated thus; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; उपसृत्य (upasṛtya) - approaching; अतिवत्सला (ativatsalā) - very affectionate; सस्वजा (sasvajā) - embracing; अनवदत् (anavadat) - spoke; शोकात् (śokāt) - from grief; तत्तद् (tat-tad) - this and that; विलपती (vilapatī) - lamenting; बहु (bahu) - much;]
(Very affectionate, approaching all her sons who were situated thus, embracing, she spoke, from grief, this and that, lamenting much.)

कथं सद्धर्मचारित्रवृत्तस्थितिविभूषितान्। अक्षुद्रान्दृढभक्तांश्च दैवतेज्यापरान्सदा ॥२-७०-१३॥
kathaṁ saddharmacāritravṛttasthitivibhūṣitān। akṣudrāndṛḍhabhaktāṁśca daivatejyāparānsadā ॥2-70-13॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; सद्धर्म (saddharma) - true dharma; चारित्र (cāritra) - conduct; वृत्त (vṛtta) - behavior; स्थिति (sthiti) - state; विभूषितान् (vibhūṣitān) - adorned; अक्षुद्रान् (akṣudrān) - not petty; दृढ (dṛḍha) - firm; भक्तान् (bhaktān) - devotees; च (ca) - and; दैवत (daivata) - divine; इज्या (ijyā) - worship; परान् (parān) - devoted to; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(How (are) those adorned with the state, behavior, and conduct of true dharma, not petty, firm devotees, and always devoted to the worship of the divine?)
How are those who are adorned with the state, behavior, and conduct of true dharma, who are not petty, who are firm devotees, and who are always devoted to the worship of the divine? (2-70-13)
व्यसनं वः समभ्यागात्कोऽयं विधिविपर्ययः। कस्यापध्यानजं चेदमागः पश्यामि वो धिया ॥२-७०-१४॥
vyasanaṃ vaḥ samabhyāgāt ko'yaṃ vidhiviparyayaḥ। kasyāpadhyānajaṃ cedam āgaḥ paśyāmi vo dhiyā ॥2-70-14॥
[व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); समभ्यागात् (samabhyāgāt) - has come upon; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; विधि-विपर्ययः (vidhi-viparyayaḥ) - contrary to fate; कस्य (kasya) - whose; अपध्यानजम् (apadhyānajam) - born of inattention; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; आगः (āgaḥ) - fault; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; वः (vaḥ) - in you; धिया (dhiyā) - with (my) mind;]
(Misfortune has come upon you; who is this contrary to fate? Whose is this fault born of inattention? I see this in you with (my) mind.)
A misfortune has come upon you; who is this that has brought about such a reversal of fate? Whose fault, born of inattention, is this? I perceive this with my mind in you. (2-70-14)
स्यात्तु मद्भाग्यदोषोऽयं याहं युष्मानजीजनम्। दुःखायासभुजोऽत्यर्थं युक्तानप्युत्तमैर्गुणैः ॥२-७०-१५॥
syāttu mad-bhāgya-doṣo'yaṃ yāhaṃ yuṣmān-ajījanam। duḥkhāyāsa-bhujo'tyarthaṃ yuktān-api uttamaiḥ guṇaiḥ ॥2-70-15॥
[स्यात् (syāt) - may be; possible; तु (tu) - but; however; मद्भाग्यदोषः (mad-bhāgya-doṣaḥ) - my-fortune-fault; fault of my destiny; अयम् (ayam) - this; या (yā) - which; अहम् (aham) - I; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - you (all); अजीजनम् (ajījanam) - did not beget; did not produce; दुःखायासभुजः (duḥkhāyāsa-bhujaḥ) - bearing pain and effort; those who bear suffering and toil; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; exceedingly; युक्तान् (yuktān) - endowed; possessed; अपि (api) - even; उत्तमैः (uttamaiḥ) - with best; with excellent; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; virtues;]
(But it may be the fault of my fortune, this, that I did not beget you, who, though endowed even with the best virtues, bear excessive pain and toil.)
But perhaps it is the fault of my destiny that I did not have you as sons, for though you possess the highest virtues, you endure excessive suffering and hardship. (2-70-15)
कथं वत्स्यथ दुर्गेषु वनेष्वृद्धिविनाकृताः। वीर्यसत्त्वबलोत्साहतेजोभिरकृशाः कृशाः ॥२-७०-१६॥
kathaṃ vatsyatha durgeṣu vaneṣu vṛddhi-vinā-kṛtāḥ। vīrya-sattva-bala-utsāha-tejobhiḥ akṛśāḥ kṛśāḥ ॥2-70-16॥
[कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वत्स्यथ (vatsyatha) - will you live; दुर्गेषु (durgeṣu) - in fortresses; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in forests; वृद्धि (vṛddhi) - increase; विना (vinā) - without; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; वीर्य (vīrya) - strength; सत्त्व (sattva) - courage; बल (bala) - power; उत्साह (utsāha) - enthusiasm; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; अकृशाः (akṛśāḥ) - not weak; कृशाः (kṛśāḥ) - weak;]
(How will you live in fortresses, in forests, made without increase, not weak in strength, courage, power, enthusiasm, energy, weak?)
How will you survive in fortresses or forests, deprived of growth, being weak and lacking in strength, courage, power, enthusiasm, and energy? (2-70-16)
यद्येतदहमज्ञास्यं वनवासो हि वो ध्रुवम्। शतशृङ्गान्मृते पाण्डौ नागमिष्यं गजाह्वयम् ॥२-७०-१७॥
yady etad aham ajñāsyam vanavāsaḥ hi vaḥ dhruvam। śataśṛṅgāt mṛte pāṇḍau nāgamiṣyam gajāhvayam ॥2-70-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; अज्ञास्यम् (ajñāsyam) - will know; वनवासः (vanavāsaḥ) - forest-dwelling; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - for you; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain; शतशृङ्गात् (śataśṛṅgāt) - from Shatashringa; मृते (mṛte) - when dead; पाण्डौ (pāṇḍau) - Pandu; न (na) - not; आगमिष्यं (āgamiṣyam) - will come; गजाह्वयम् (gajāhvayam) - to Gajahvaya (Hastinapura);]
(If I know this, indeed your forest-dwelling is certain. From Shatashringa, when Pandu is dead, I will not come to Gajahvaya (Hastinapura).)
If I come to know this, then your exile to the forest is certain. After Pandu dies at Shatashringa, I will not return to Gajahvaya (Hastinapura). (2-70-17)
धन्यं वः पितरं मन्ये तपोमेधान्वितं तथा। यः पुत्राधिमसम्प्राप्य स्वर्गेच्छामकरोत्प्रियाम् ॥२-७०-१८॥
dhanyaṃ vaḥ pitaraṃ manye tapomedhānvitaṃ tathā। yaḥ putrādhi-masaṃprāpya svargecchām akarot priyām ॥2-70-18॥
[धन्यं (dhanyaṃ) - fortunate; blessed; वः (vaḥ) - your; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; मnye (manye) - I consider; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; मेधा (medhā) - wisdom; अन्वितं (anvitaṃ) - endowed with; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुत्राधिम् (putrādhiṃ) - grief for son; सम्प्राप्य (saṃprāpya) - having obtained; स्वर्गेच्छाम् (svargecchām) - desire for heaven; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; performed; प्रियाम् (priyām) - dear; beloved;]
(I consider your father fortunate, also endowed with austerity and wisdom, who, having obtained grief for his son, made the dear desire for heaven.)
I think your father is truly blessed, endowed with austerity and wisdom, for, having experienced the grief of his son, he cherished the noble wish for heaven. (2-70-18)
धन्यां चातीन्द्रियज्ञानामिमां प्राप्तां परां गतिम्। मन्येऽद्य माद्रीं धर्मज्ञां कल्याणीं सर्वथैव हि ॥२-७०-१९॥
dhanyāṃ cātīndriyajñānāmimāṃ prāptāṃ parāṃ gatim। manye'dya mādrīṃ dharmajñāṃ kalyāṇīṃ sarvathaiva hi ॥2-70-19॥
[धन्यां (dhanyām) - fortunate; blessed; च (ca) - and; अतीन्द्रियज्ञानाम् (atīndriyajñānām) - of those possessing knowledge beyond the senses; इमाम् (imām) - this; प्राप्ताम् (prāptām) - attained; पराम् (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; path; मन््ये (manye) - I think; अद्य (adya) - today; माद्रीम् (mādrīm) - Mādrī; धर्मज्ञाम् (dharmajñām) - knower of dharma; कल्याणीम् (kalyāṇīm) - auspicious; virtuous; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly;]
(Fortunate and of those possessing knowledge beyond the senses, this supreme state attained; I think today Mādrī, knower of dharma, auspicious, in every way indeed certainly.)
Today, I truly consider Mādrī, who is virtuous and knows dharma, to have attained the supreme state that is blessed and known only to those with knowledge beyond the senses, in every way. (2-70-19)
रत्या मत्या च गत्या च ययाहमभिसन्धिता। जीवितप्रियतां मह्यं धिगिमां क्लेशभागिनीम् ॥२-७०-२०॥
ratyā matyā ca gatyā ca yayāhamabhisandhitā। jīvitapriyatāṃ mahyaṃ dhigimāṃ kleśabhāginīm ॥2-70-20॥

(By attachment, by intention, and by movement, by which I have been bound, attachment to life to me—condemnation on this partaker in suffering.)
By attachment, intention, and movement, I have been bound to the love of life; shame on this suffering self of mine. (2-70-20)
एवं विलपतीं कुन्तीमभिसान्त्व्य प्रणम्य च। पाण्डवा विगतानन्दा वनायैव प्रवव्रजुः ॥२-७०-२१॥
evaṃ vilapatīṃ kuntīm abhisaāntvya praṇamya ca। pāṇḍavā vigatānandā vanāyaiva pravavrajuḥ ॥2-70-21॥

(Thus, having consoled the lamenting Kuntī and having bowed, the Pāṇḍavas, devoid of joy, indeed departed to the forest.)
Thus, after consoling the grieving Kuntī and bowing to her, the Pāṇḍavas, bereft of happiness, set out for the forest. (2-70-21)
विदुरादयश्च तामार्तां कुन्तीमाश्वास्य हेतुभिः। प्रावेशयन्गृहं क्षत्तुः स्वयमार्ततराः शनैः ॥२-७०-२२॥
vidurādayaś ca tām ārtāṃ kuntīm āśvāsya hetubhiḥ। prāveśayan gṛhaṃ kṣattuḥ svayam ārtatarāḥ śanaiḥ ॥2-70-22॥

राजा च धृतराष्ट्रः स शोकाकुलितचेतनः। क्षत्तुः सम्प्रेषयामास शीघ्रमागम्यतामिति ॥२-७०-२३॥
