Pancharatra: To please Duryodhana Karna suggests killing Pandavas by attacking them in the forest. Vyasa intervenes.

When the evil-minded king, son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, heard that Vidura had arrived and had been consoled by the king, he was greatly troubled. (3-8-1)
स सौबलं समानाय्य कर्णदुःशासनावपि। अब्रवीद्वचनं राजा प्रविश्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥३-८-२॥
sa saubalaṃ samānāyya karṇaduḥśāsanāvapi। abravīdvacanaṃ rājā praviśyābuddhijaṃ tamaḥ ॥3-8-2॥

एष प्रत्यागतो मन्त्री धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमतः। विदुरः पाण्डुपुत्राणां सुहृद्विद्वान्हिते रतः ॥३-८-३॥

यावदस्य पुनर्बुद्धिं विदुरो नापकर्षति। पाण्डवानयने तावन्मन्त्रयध्वं हितं मम ॥३-८-४॥
yāvad asya punar buddhiṃ viduraḥ na apakarṣati। pāṇḍavān ayane tāvat mantrayadhvam hitaṃ mama ॥3-8-4॥

अथ पश्याम्यहं पार्थान्प्राप्तानिह कथञ्चन। पुनः शोषं गमिष्यामि निरासुर्निरवग्रहः ॥३-८-५॥
atha paśyāmyahaṃ pārthānprāptāniha kathañcana। punaḥ śoṣaṃ gamiṣyāmi nirāsurniravagrahaḥ ॥3-8-5॥

(What, O king, have you taken up the opinion of the foolish, O lord of the people? Your promises, having been made, are gone; this will not be so.)

सत्यवाक्ये स्थिताः सर्वे पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ। पितुस्ते वचनं तात न ग्रहीष्यन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥३-८-८॥
satyavākye sthitāḥ sarve pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha। pitus te vacanaṃ tāta na grahīṣyanti karhicit ॥3-8-8॥

(In truthful speech established all the Pāṇḍavas, O best of the Bharatas, of the father your word, O dear one, not will accept at any time.)
O best of the Bharatas, all the Pāṇḍavas are established in truthfulness; O dear one, they will never accept your father's word at any time. (3-8-8)
अथ वा ते ग्रहीष्यन्ति पुनरेष्यन्ति वा पुरम्। निरस्य समयं भूयः पणोऽस्माकं भविष्यति ॥३-८-९॥
atha vā te grahīṣyanti punareṣyanti vā puram। nirasya samayaṃ bhūyaḥ paṇo'smākaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥3-8-9॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; ते (te) - they; ग्रहीष्यन्ति (grahīṣyanti) - will seize; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will come; वा (vā) - or; पुरम् (puram) - city; निरस्य (nirasya) - having rejected; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; पणः (paṇaḥ) - wager; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Now or they will seize, or will come again to the city. Having rejected the agreement again, the wager will be ours.)
Now, either they will seize or return again to the city. If they reject the agreement again, the wager will be ours. (3-8-9)
सर्वे भवामो मध्यस्था राज्ञश्छन्दानुवर्तिनः। छिद्रं बहु प्रपश्यन्तः पाण्डवानां सुसंवृताः ॥३-८-१०॥
sarve bhavāmo madhyasthā rājñaś chandānuvartinaḥ। chidraṃ bahu prapaśyantaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ susaṃvṛtāḥ ॥3-8-10॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; भवामः (bhavāmaḥ) - we are; मध्यस्था (madhyasthāḥ) - neutral; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; छन्दः-अनुवर्तिनः (chandaḥ-anuvartinaḥ) - following the will; छिद्रं (chidram) - fault; बहु (bahu) - many; प्रपश्यन्तः (prapaśyantaḥ) - observing; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; सुसंवृताः (susaṃvṛtāḥ) - well-concealed;]
(All we are neutral, following the king's will, observing many faults of the Pāṇḍavas, well-concealed.)
We are all neutral, following the king's wishes, and though we observe many faults of the Pāṇḍavas, they are well-concealed. (3-8-10)

एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ यथा वदसि मातुल। नित्यं हि मे कथयतस्तव बुद्धिर्हि रोचते ॥३-८-११॥
evam etan mahāprājña yathā vadasi mātula। nityaṃ hi me kathayatas tava buddhir hi rocate ॥3-8-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; मातुल (mātula) - O uncle; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; कथयतः (kathayatas) - speaking; तव (tava) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; हि (hi) - indeed; रोचते (rocate) - pleases;]
(Thus this, O greatly wise, as you speak, O uncle. Always indeed to me, your intellect, while you are speaking, indeed pleases.)
O greatly wise uncle, it is just as you say. I always find your intellect pleasing whenever you speak. (3-8-11)

उपलभ्य ततः कर्णो विवृत्य नयने शुभे। रोषाद्दुःशासनं चैव सौबलेयं च तावुभौ ॥३-८-१४॥

उवाच परमक्रुद्ध उद्यम्यात्मानमात्मना। अहो मम मतं यत्तन्निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥३-८-१५॥

(Said, extremely angry, having raised the self by the self. Indeed, my opinion which that, know, O kings.)
Extremely enraged, he said, having composed himself. "Indeed, O kings, listen to what my opinion is." (3-8-15)
प्रियं सर्वे चिकीर्षामो राज्ञः किङ्करपाणयः। न चास्य शक्नुमः सर्वे प्रिये स्थातुमतन्द्रिताः ॥३-८-१६॥
priyaṃ sarve cikīrṣāmo rājñaḥ kiṅkarapāṇayaḥ। na cāsya śaknumaḥ sarve priye sthātumatandritāḥ ॥3-8-16॥
[प्रियं (priyam) - dear; desirable; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; चिकीर्षामः (cikīrṣāmaḥ) - we wish to do; we desire to accomplish; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; किङ्करपाणयः (kiṅkarapāṇayaḥ) - servants at hand; those with hands ready to serve; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; शक्नुमः (śaknumaḥ) - we are able; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; प्रिये (priye) - dear one; beloved; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; to stay; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - without fatigue; untiringly;]
(We all, the king's servants at hand, wish to do what is dear; but we all are not able, dear one, to remain untiringly for him.)
We, all the king's ready servants, wish to do what is dear to him; but, dear one, we are not all able to remain constantly attentive for him. (3-8-16)
वयं तु शस्त्राण्यादाय रथानास्थाय दंशिताः। गच्छामः सहिता हन्तुं पाण्डवान्वनगोचरान् ॥३-८-१७॥
vayaṃ tu śastrāṇy ādāya rathān āsthāya daṃśitāḥ। gacchāmaḥ sahitā hantuṃ pāṇḍavān vanagocarān ॥3-8-17॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; तु (tu) - but; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; दंशिताः (daṃśitāḥ) - armed; गच्छामः (gacchāmaḥ) - we go; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to slay; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वनगोचरान् (vanagocarān) - dwelling in the forest;]
(We, but, weapons having taken, chariots having mounted, armed, we go together to slay the Pāṇḍavas dwelling in the forest.)
But we, having taken up weapons, mounted on chariots and armed, go together to slay the Pāṇḍavas who dwell in the forest. (3-8-17)
तेषु सर्वेषु शान्तेषु गतेष्वविदितां गतिम्। निर्विवादा भविष्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रास्तथा वयम् ॥३-८-१८॥
teṣu sarveṣu śānteṣu gateṣvaviditāṃ gatim। nirvivādā bhaviṣyanti dhārtarāṣṭrās tathā vayam ॥3-8-18॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in those; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; शान्तेषु (śānteṣu) - who are pacified; गतेषु (gateṣu) - who have departed; अविदितां (aviditām) - unknown; गतिम् (gatim) - path; निर्विवादा (nirvivādā) - free from dispute; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; तथा (tathā) - so; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(In those all who are pacified, who have departed, the unknown path; free from dispute will become the sons of Dhritarashtra, so we.)
When all those who are pacified have departed on the unknown path, the sons of Dhritarashtra and we too will become free from disputes. (3-8-18)
यावदेव परिद्यूना यावच्छोकपरायणाः। यावन्मित्रविहीनाश्च तावच्छक्या मतं मम ॥३-८-१९॥
yāvad eva paridyūnā yāvat śoka-parāyaṇāḥ। yāvan mitra-vihīnāś ca tāvat śakyā mataṃ mama ॥3-8-19॥

(As long as (they are) indeed distressed, as long as (they are) absorbed in grief, as long as (they are) bereft of friends and so long (it is) possible (to follow) my opinion.)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा पूजयन्तः पुनः पुनः। बाढमित्येव ते सर्वे प्रत्यूचुः सूतजं तदा ॥३-८-२०॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā pūjayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। bāḍhamityeva te sarve pratyūcuḥ sūtajaṃ tadā ॥3-8-20॥

(Thus having spoken, but very enraged, with chariots, all separately set out to slay the Pāṇḍavas, in groups, having made up their minds.)
Thus, having spoken, all of them, greatly enraged, set out separately in their chariots, determined in groups to slay the Pāṇḍavas. (3-8-21)
तान्प्रस्थितान्परिज्ञाय कृष्णद्वैपायनस्तदा। आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा दृष्ट्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥३-८-२२॥

(Having known them departed, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana then came, pure-souled, having seen with divine eye.)
Then Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), whose soul was pure, having perceived with his divine eye that they had departed, arrived there. (3-8-22)
