Pancharatra: Vyasa asks Dhritarashtra to reconcile.
व्यास उवाच॥

(Vyāsa said;)
Vyāsa said.
धृतराष्ट्र महाप्राज्ञ निबोध वचनं मम। वक्ष्यामि त्वा कौरवाणां सर्वेषां हितमुत्तमम् ॥३-९-१॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra mahāprājña nibodha vacanaṃ mama। vakṣyāmi tvā kauravāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ hitamuttamam ॥3-9-1॥
[धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; (name of the king) महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - greatly wise; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; मम (mama) - my; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; त्वा (tvā) - to you; कौरवाणां (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Dhritarashtra, greatly wise, listen to my speech. I shall speak to you the supreme welfare of all the Kauravas. (3-9-1))
O Dhritarashtra, greatly wise, listen to my words. I will tell you what is the highest welfare for all the Kauravas. (3-9-1)
न मे प्रियं महाबाहो यद्गताः पाण्डवा वनम्। निकृत्या निर्जिताश्चैव दुर्योधनवशानुगैः ॥३-९-२॥
na me priyaṃ mahābāho yadgatāḥ pāṇḍavā vanam। nikṛtyā nirjitāścaiva duryodhanavaśānugaiḥ ॥3-9-2॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यत् (yat) - that; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - defeated; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुर्योधनवशानुगैः (duryodhanavaśānugaiḥ) - by those following the will of Duryodhana;]
(Not to me is dear, O mighty-armed, that the Pāṇḍavas have gone to the forest, defeated by deceit and indeed by those following the will of Duryodhana.)
O mighty-armed one, I do not like that the Pāṇḍavas have gone to the forest, having been deceitfully defeated by those who follow Duryodhana's will. (3-9-2)
ते स्मरन्तः परिक्लेशान्वर्षे पूर्णे त्रयोदशे। विमोक्ष्यन्ति विषं क्रुद्धाः करवेयेषु भारत ॥३-९-३॥
te smarantaḥ parikleśān varṣe pūrṇe trayodaśe। vimokṣyanti viṣaṃ kruddhāḥ karaveyeṣu bhārata ॥3-9-3॥
[ते (te) - they; स्मरन्तः (smarantaḥ) - remembering; परिक्लेशान् (parikleśān) - afflictions; वर्षे (varṣe) - in the year; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - completed; त्रयोदशे (trayodaśe) - thirteenth; विमोक्ष्यन्ति (vimokṣyanti) - will release; विषं (viṣam) - poison; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; करवेयेषु (karaveyeṣu) - among the Karaveyas; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(They, remembering the afflictions, in the completed thirteenth year, will release poison, being angry, among the Karaveyas, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when the thirteenth year is completed, remembering their afflictions, they, enraged, will release poison among the Karaveyas. (3-9-3)
तदयं किं नु पापात्मा तव पुत्रः सुमन्दधीः। पाण्डवान्नित्यसङ्क्रुद्धो राज्यहेतोर्जिघांसति ॥३-९-४॥
tad ayaṃ kiṃ nu pāpātmā tava putraḥ sumandadhīḥ। pāṇḍavān nitya-saṅkruddhaḥ rājya-hetor jighāṃsati ॥3-9-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अयम् (ayam) - this; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - wicked-souled; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - very dull-witted; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; नित्यसङ्क्रुद्धः (nitya-saṅkruddhaḥ) - always enraged; राज्यहेतोः (rājya-hetoḥ) - for the sake of the kingdom; जिघांसति (jighāṃsati) - seeks to destroy;]
(That this, what indeed, wicked-souled, your son, very dull-witted, the Pāṇḍavas, always enraged, for the sake of the kingdom, seeks to destroy.)
So, why does this wicked-souled, very dull-witted son of yours, who is always enraged at the Pāṇḍavas, seek to destroy them for the sake of the kingdom? (3-9-4)
वार्यतां साध्वयं मूढः शमं गच्छतु ते सुतः। वनस्थांस्तानयं हन्तुमिच्छन्प्राणैर्विमोक्ष्यते ॥३-९-५॥
vāryatāṃ sādhvayaṃ mūḍhaḥ śamaṃ gacchatu te sutaḥ। vanasthāṃstāna yaṃ hantumicchanprāṇairvimokṣyate ॥3-9-5॥
[वार्यताम् (vāryatām) - let be restrained; साधु-अयम् (sādhu-ayam) - well-this; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded one; शमम् (śamam) - peace; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - let him go; ते (te) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; वनस्थान् (vanasthān) - those dwelling in the forest; तान् (tān) - them; अयम् (ayam) - this; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life-breaths; विमोक्ष्यते (vimokṣyate) - will be deprived;]
(Let this deluded one be restrained well; let your son go to peace. Desiring to kill those dwelling in the forest, this one will be deprived of life-breaths.)
Let this deluded one be restrained; let your son attain peace. If he desires to kill those dwelling in the forest, he will lose his life. (3-9-5)
यथाह विदुरः प्राज्ञो यथा भीष्मो यथा वयम्। यथा कृपश्च द्रोणश्च तथा साधु विधीयताम् ॥३-९-६॥
yathāha viduraḥ prājño yathā bhīṣmo yathā vayam। yathā kṛpaśca droṇaśca tathā sādhu vidhīyatām ॥3-9-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; आह (āha) - said; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise; यथा (yathā) - just as; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; यथा (yathā) - just as; वयम् (vayam) - we; यथा (yathā) - just as; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kripa; च (ca) - and; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; साधु (sādhu) - properly; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be done;]
(Just as Vidura the wise said, just as Bhishma, just as we, just as Kripa and Drona, so let it be properly done.)
Let it be done properly, just as Vidura the wise said, as Bhishma, as we, as Kripa and Drona have said. (3-9-6)
विग्रहो हि महाप्राज्ञ स्वजनेन विगर्हितः। अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च मा राजन्प्रतिपद्यथाः ॥३-९-७॥
vigraho hi mahāprājña svajanena vigarhitaḥ। adharmyamayaśasyaṃ ca mā rājanpratipadyathāḥ॥3-9-7॥
[विग्रहः (vigrahaḥ) - conflict; हि (hi) - indeed; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; स्वजनेन (svajanena) - by one's own people; विगर्हितः (vigarhitaḥ) - condemned; अधर्म्यम् (adharmyam) - unrighteous; अयशस्यं (ayaśasyam) - disgraceful; च (ca) - and; मा (mā) - do not; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रतिपद्यथाः (pratipadyathāḥ) - undertake;]
(Conflict indeed, O greatly wise one, condemned by one's own people; unrighteous and disgraceful also, do not, O king, undertake.)
O wise king, do not undertake conflict that is condemned by your own people, for it is unrighteous and brings disgrace. (3-9-7)
समीक्षा यादृशी ह्यस्य पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत। उपेक्ष्यमाणा सा राजन्महान्तमनयं स्पृशेत् ॥३-९-८॥
samīkṣā yādṛśī hy asya pāṇḍavān prati bhārata। upekṣyamāṇā sā rājan mahāntam anayaṃ spṛśet ॥3-9-8॥
[समीक्षा (samīkṣā) - examination; यादृशी (yādṛśī) - such as; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - towards the Pāṇḍavas; प्रति (prati) - towards; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उपेक्ष्यमाणा (upekṣyamāṇā) - being neglected; सा (sā) - she; राजन् (rājan) - O king; महान्तम् (mahāntam) - great; अनयम् (anayam) - misfortune; स्पृशेत् (spṛśet) - may touch;]
(Examination such as this indeed of this towards the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata, being neglected, she, O king, great misfortune may touch.)
O Bhārata, if such an examination regarding the Pāṇḍavas is neglected, O king, it may bring great misfortune. (3-9-8)
अथ वायं सुमन्दात्मा वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः। पाण्डवैः सहितो राजन्नेक एवासहायवान् ॥३-९-९॥
atha vāyaṃ sumandātmā vanaṃ gacchatu te sutaḥ। pāṇḍavaiḥ sahito rājanneka evāsahāyavān ॥3-9-9॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुमन्दात्मा (sumandātmā) - very weak-minded; वनम् (vanam) - forest; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - let him go; ते (te) - your; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; राजन् (rājan) - O king; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; एव (eva) - indeed; असहायवान् (asahāyavān) - without help;]
(Now or this very weak-minded (person) let your son go to the forest, accompanied by the Pāṇḍavas, O king, alone indeed without help.)
Now, O king, let this very weak-minded son of yours go to the forest, accompanied by the Pāṇḍavas, but alone and without any support. (3-9-9)
ततः संसर्गजः स्नेहः पुत्रस्य तव पाण्डवैः। यदि स्यात्कृतकार्योऽद्य भवेस्त्वं मनुजेश्वर ॥३-९-१०॥
tataḥ saṁsargajaḥ snehaḥ putrasya tava pāṇḍavaiḥ। yadi syāt kṛtakāryo'dya bhaves tvaṁ manujeśvara ॥3-9-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; संसर्गजः (saṁsargajaḥ) - arisen from association; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; तव (tava) - your; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; यदि (yadi) - if; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; कृतकार्यः (kṛtakāryaḥ) - one whose purpose is accomplished; अद्य (adya) - today; भवेत् (bhavet) - should become; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O lord of men;]
(Then, the affection arisen from association of your son with the Pāṇḍavas, if it should be (that) today you become one whose purpose is accomplished, O lord of men.)
Then, if the affection that has arisen from your son's association with the Pāṇḍavas should result in your purpose being accomplished today, O lord of men, (so be it). (3-9-10)
अथ वा जायमानस्य यच्छीलमनुजायते। श्रूयते तन्महाराज नामृतस्यापसर्पति ॥३-९-११॥
atha vā jāyamānasya yacchīlam anujāyate। śrūyate tan mahārāja nāmṛtasya apasarpati ॥3-9-11॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; जायमानस्य (jāyamānasya) - of one being born; यत् (yat) - which; शीलम् (śīlam) - nature; character; अनुजायते (anujāyate) - follows; is born after; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; तत् (tat) - that; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; अमृतस्य (amṛtasya) - of the immortal; अपसर्पति (apasarpati) - departs; moves away;]
(Now or, of one being born, whatever nature follows, it is heard, O great king, that it does not depart from the immortal.)
O great king, it is said that whatever nature is acquired at birth does not depart from the immortal. (3-9-11)
कथं वा मन्यते भीष्मो द्रोणो वा विदुरोऽपि वा। भवान्वात्र क्षमं कार्यं पुरा चार्थोऽतिवर्तते ॥३-९-१२॥
kathaṁ vā manyate bhīṣmo droṇo vā viduro'pi vā। bhavānvātra kṣamaṁ kāryaṁ purā cārtho'tivartate ॥3-9-12॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; वा (vā) - or; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; वा (vā) - or; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; भवान् (bhavān) - you; वा (vā) - or; अत्र (atra) - here; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; पुरा (purā) - before; च (ca) - and; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; अतिवर्तते (ativartate) - is surpassed;]
(How or thinks Bhishma, or Drona, or Vidura also, or you, here proper action before and purpose is surpassed.)
How do Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, or even you think about this? Should not proper action be taken here before the purpose is lost? (3-9-12)
