Pancharatra: After gaining consciousness Pradyumna urges the charioteer to return to the battlefield.
वासुदेव उवाच॥

शाल्वबाणार्दिते तस्मिन्प्रद्युम्ने बलिनां वरे। वृष्णयो भग्नसङ्कल्पा विव्यथुः पृतनागताः ॥३-१९-१॥
śālvabāṇārditē tasmin pradyumnē balināṃ varē। vṛṣṇayaḥ bhagnasaṅkalpā vivyathuḥ pṛtanāgatāḥ ॥3-19-1॥
[शाल्व (śālva) - of Śālva; बाण (bāṇa) - arrow; आर्दिते (ārditē) - struck; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रद्युम्ने (pradyumnē) - Pradyumna; बलिनां (balināṃ) - of the strong; वरे (varē) - the best; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis; भग्न (bhagna) - broken; सङ्कल्पा (saṅkalpā) - resolutions; विव्यथुः (vivyathuḥ) - were distressed; पृतना (pṛtanā) - battle; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - arrived;]
(In that Pradyumna, the best of the strong, struck by Śālva's arrow, the Vṛṣṇis, their resolutions broken, who had arrived at the battle, were distressed.)
When Pradyumna, the foremost among the strong, was struck by Śālva's arrow, the Vṛṣṇis, whose resolve was broken, who had come to the battle, were filled with distress. (3-19-1)
हाहाकृतमभूत्सार्वं वृष्ण्यन्धकबलं तदा। प्रद्युम्ने पतिते राजन्परे च मुदिताभवन् ॥३-१९-२॥
hāhākṛtam abhūt sārvaṃ vṛṣṇy-andhaka-balaṃ tadā। pradyumne patite rājan pare ca muditā abhavan ॥3-19-2॥
[हाहाकृतम् (hāhākṛtam) - made a cry of distress; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; सार्वम् (sārvaṃ) - all; वृष्ण्यन्धकबलम् (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-balam) - the force of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रद्युम्ने (pradyumne) - when Pradyumna; पतिते (patite) - had fallen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; परे (pare) - the others (enemies); च (ca) - and; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - became joyful; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(A cry of distress arose from all the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka forces then; when Pradyumna had fallen, O king, the others and became joyful.)
At that time, O king, when Pradyumna fell, all the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka forces cried out in distress, while the opposing side became joyful. (3-19-2)
तं तथा मोहितं दृष्ट्वा सारथिर्जवनैर्हयैः। रणादपाहरत्तूर्णं शिक्षितो दारुकिस्ततः ॥३-१९-३॥
taṃ tathā mohitaṃ dṛṣṭvā sārathir javanair hayaiḥ। raṇād apāharat tūrṇaṃ śikṣito dārukis tataḥ ॥3-19-3॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; मोहितं (mohitaṃ) - bewildered; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; जवनैः (javanaiḥ) - by swift; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - horses; रणात् (raṇāt) - from the battlefield; अपाहरत् (apāharat) - carried away; तूर्णं (tūrṇaṃ) - quickly; शिक्षितः (śikṣitaḥ) - trained; दारुकिः (dārukiḥ) - Dāruka; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Him thus bewildered having seen, the charioteer by swift horses from the battlefield carried away quickly, trained Dāruka then.)
Seeing him thus bewildered, the trained charioteer Dāruka quickly carried him away from the battlefield with swift horses. (3-19-3)
नातिदूरापयाते तु रथे रथवरप्रणुत्। धनुर्गृहीत्वा यन्तारं लब्धसञ्ज्ञोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥३-१९-४॥
nātīdūrāpayāte tu rathe rathavarapraṇut। dhanurgr̥hītvā yantāraṃ labdhasaṃjño'bravīdidam ॥3-19-4॥
[न (na) - not; अति-दूर-अपयाते (ati-dūra-apayāte) - when (the chariot) had not gone very far; तु (tu) - but; रथे (rathe) - in the chariot; रथवर-प्रणुत् (rathavara-praṇut) - praised by the best of charioteers; धनुः-गृहीत्वा (dhanuḥ-gr̥hītvā) - having taken the bow; यन्तारम् (yantāram) - the charioteer; लब्ध-सञ्ज्ञः (labdha-saṃjñaḥ) - having regained consciousness; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Not having gone very far, but in the chariot praised by the best of charioteers, having taken the bow, having regained consciousness, he said this to the charioteer.)
When the chariot had not gone very far, and as he regained consciousness, he took up his bow and spoke these words to the charioteer. (3-19-4)
सौते किं ते व्यवसितं कस्माद्यासि पराङ्मुखः। नैष वृष्णिप्रवीराणामाहवे धर्म उच्यते ॥३-१९-५॥
saute kiṁ te vyavasitaṁ kasmādyāsi parāṅmukhaḥ। naiṣa vṛṣṇipravīrāṇāmāhave dharma ucyate ॥3-19-5॥
[सौते (saute) - O son of Suta; किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - your; व्यवसितं (vyavasitaṁ) - resolve; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; यासि (yāsi) - are you going; पराङ्मुखः (parāṅmukhaḥ) - turned away; न (na) - not; एष (eṣa) - this; वृष्णिप्रवीराणाम् (vṛṣṇipravīrāṇām) - of the mighty Vṛṣṇis; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(O son of Suta, what is your resolve? Why are you turned away? This is not said to be righteousness in battle for the mighty Vṛṣṇis.)
O son of Suta, what have you decided? Why are you turning away? For the mighty Vṛṣṇis, this is not considered righteousness in battle. (3-19-5)
कच्चित्सौते न ते मोहः शाल्वं दृष्ट्वा महाहवे। विषादो वा रणं दृष्ट्वा ब्रूहि मे त्वं यथातथम् ॥३-१९-६॥
kaccitsaute na te mohaḥ śālwaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahāhave। viṣādo vā raṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā brūhi me tvaṃ yathātatham ॥3-19-6॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; सौते (saute) - O son of Suta; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; मोहः (mohaḥ) - delusion; शाल्वं (śālwam) - Śālva; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; विषादः (viṣādaḥ) - despondency; वा (vā) - or; रणं (raṇam) - battle; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - as it is;]
(Whether, O son of Suta, not your delusion having seen Śālva in the great battle, or despondency having seen the battle, tell me you as it is.)
O son of Suta, tell me truly: did you not feel delusion on seeing Śālva in the great battle, or did you feel despondency on seeing the battle? Tell me exactly as it happened. (3-19-6)
सूत उवाच॥

(The charioteer said;)
The charioteer said.
जानार्दने न मे मोहो नापि मे भयमाविशत्। अतिभारं तु ते मन्ये शाल्वं केशवनन्दन ॥३-१९-७॥
jānārdane na me moho nāpi me bhayam āviśat। atibhāraṃ tu te manye śālvaṃ keśavanandana ॥3-19-7॥
[जानार्दने (jānārdane) - in Jānārdana; (O Jānārdana;) न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; मोहः (mohaḥ) - delusion; नापि (nāpi) - nor also; मे (me) - to me; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; अतिभारम् (atibhāram) - excessive burden; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - of you; मन्ये (manye) - I think; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; केशवनन्दन (keśavanandana) - O son of Keśava;]
(In Jānārdana, not to me delusion, nor also to me fear entered. Excessive burden but of you I think Śālva, O son of Keśava. (3-19-7))
O Jānārdana, I have neither delusion nor has fear entered me. But I consider Śālva to be an excessive burden for you, O son of Keśava. (3-19-7)
सोऽपयामि शनैर्वीर बलवानेष पापकृत्। मोहितश्च रणे शूरो रक्ष्यः सारथिना रथी ॥३-१९-८॥
so'payāmi śanair vīra balavān eṣa pāpakṛt। mohitaś ca raṇe śūro rakṣyaḥ sārathinā rathī ॥3-19-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; आयामि (āyāmi) - I restrain; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; वीर (vīra) - hero; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पापकृत् (pāpakṛt) - evil-doer; मोहितः (mohitaḥ) - deluded; च (ca) - and; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शूरः (śūraḥ) - valiant; रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; सारथिना (sārathinā) - by the charioteer; रथी (rathī) - the chariot-warrior;]
(He also I restrain slowly, hero, strong, this evil-doer; deluded and in battle valiant to be protected by the charioteer the chariot-warrior.)
O hero, I am restraining this strong evil-doer slowly; though valiant, the chariot-warrior, being deluded in battle, must be protected by the charioteer. (3-19-8)
आयुष्मंस्त्वं मया नित्यं रक्षितव्यस्त्वयाप्यहम्। रक्षितव्यो रथी नित्यमिति कृत्वापयाम्यहम् ॥३-१९-९॥
āyuṣmaṃs tvaṃ mayā nityaṃ rakṣitavyas tvayāpy aham। rakṣitavyo rathī nityam iti kṛtvā apayāmy aham॥3-19-9॥
[आयुष्मन् (āyuṣman) - O long-lived one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; रक्षितव्यः (rakṣitavyaḥ) - to be protected; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I; रक्षितव्यः (rakṣitavyaḥ) - to be protected; रथी (rathī) - the charioteer; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having considered; अपयामि (apayāmi) - I withdraw; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(O long-lived one, you are always to be protected by me; I also am to be protected by you always, the charioteer—thus having considered, I withdraw.)
O long-lived one, you are always to be protected by me, and I too must always be protected by you, the charioteer. Thinking thus, I withdraw. (3-19-9)
एकश्चासि महाबाहो बहवश्चापि दानवाः। नसमं रौक्मिणेयाहं रणं मत्वापयाम्यहम् ॥३-१९-१०॥
ekaś cāsi mahābāho bahavaś cāpi dānavāḥ। nasamaṃ raukmiṇeyāhaṃ raṇaṃ matvāpayāmy aham ॥3-19-10॥
[एकः (ekaḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; न (na) - not; समं (samaṃ) - equal; रौक्मिणेय (raukmiṇeya) - son of Rukmiṇī; अहम् (aham) - I; रणं (raṇam) - battle; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; अपयामि (apayāmi) - I withdraw; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(One and you are, O mighty-armed, many and also Dānavas; not equal, O son of Rukmiṇī, I, battle, having considered, I withdraw, I.)
O mighty-armed, you are one, and the Dānavas are many; considering the battle not to be equal, O son of Rukmiṇī, I withdraw. (3-19-10)

Vāsudeva said.
एवं ब्रुवति सूते तु तदा मकरकेतुमान्। उवाच सूतं कौरव्य निवर्तय रथं पुनः ॥३-१९-११॥
evaṃ bruvati sūte tu tadā makaraketumān। uvāca sūtaṃ kauravya nivartaya rathaṃ punaḥ ॥3-19-11॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; सूते (sūte) - to the charioteer; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; मकरकेतुमान् (makaraketumān) - Makaraketu (name); उवाच (uvāca) - said; सूतं (sūtaṃ) - to the charioteer; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; निवर्तय (nivartaya) - turn back; रथं (rathaṃ) - the chariot; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus, while the charioteer was speaking, then Makaraketu said to the charioteer, O Kauravya, turn back the chariot again.)
While the charioteer was thus speaking, at that moment Makaraketu said to the charioteer, "O Kauravya, turn the chariot back again." (3-19-11)
दारुकात्मज मैवं त्वं पुनः कार्षीः कथञ्चन। व्यपयानं रणात्सौते जीवतो मम कर्हिचित् ॥३-१९-१२॥
dārukātmaja maivaṃ tvaṃ punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana। vyapayānaṃ raṇātsaute jīvato mama karhicit ॥3-19-12॥
[दारुकात्मज (dārukātmaja) - O son of Dāruka; मा (mā) - do not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - should do; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; व्यपयानं (vyapayānam) - departure; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; सौते (saute) - O charioteer; जीवत: (jīvataḥ) - living; मम (mama) - my; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time;]
(O son of Dāruka, do not thus you again should do in any way departure from battle, O charioteer, living my at any time.)
O son of Dāruka, never again should you, O charioteer, in any way leave the battlefield while I am alive. (3-19-12)
न स वृष्णिकुले जातो यो वै त्यजति सङ्गरम्। यो वा निपतितं हन्ति तवास्मीति च वादिनम् ॥३-१९-१३॥
na sa vṛṣṇikule jāto yo vai tyajati saṅgaram। yo vā nipatitaṃ hanti tavāsmīti ca vādinam ॥3-19-13॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; वृष्णिकुले (vṛṣṇikule) - in the Vṛṣṇi family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; त्यजति (tyajati) - abandons; सङ्गरम् (saṅgaram) - battle; यः (yaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; निपतितम् (nipatitam) - fallen; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; तव (tava) - your; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; वादिनम् (vādinam) - one who says;]
(He is not born in the Vṛṣṇi family who indeed abandons battle; or who kills the fallen, and one who says 'I am yours' thus.)
He who abandons battle, or who kills the fallen, or who slays one saying 'I am yours', is not born in the Vṛṣṇi family. (3-19-13)
तथा स्त्रियं वै यो हन्ति वृद्धं बालं तथैव च। विरथं विप्रकीर्णं च भग्नशस्त्रायुधं तथा ॥३-१९-१४॥
tathā striyaṃ vai yo hanti vṛddhaṃ bālaṃ tathaiva ca। virathaṃ viprakīrṇaṃ ca bhagnaśastrāyudhaṃ tathā ॥3-19-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that manner; स्त्रियं (striyaṃ) - woman; वै (vai) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; वृद्धं (vṛddhaṃ) - old person; बालं (bālaṃ) - child; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; विरथं (virathaṃ) - one without a chariot; विप्रकीर्णं (viprakīrṇaṃ) - disheveled; च (ca) - and; भग्नशस्त्रायुधं (bhagnaśastrāyudhaṃ) - whose weapons and arms are broken; तथा (tathā) - in that manner;]
(In that manner, a woman indeed, who kills an old person, a child likewise and; one without a chariot, disheveled and whose weapons and arms are broken, in that manner.)
In the same way, whoever kills a woman, an old person, a child, one who is without a chariot, disheveled, or whose weapons and arms are broken, is also condemned. (3-19-14)
त्वं च सूतकुले जातो विनीतः सूतकर्मणि। धर्मज्ञश्चासि वृष्णीनामाहवेष्वपि दारुके ॥३-१९-१५॥
tvaṃ ca sūtakule jāto vinītaḥ sūtakarmaṇi। dharmajñaś cāsi vṛṣṇīnām āhaveṣv api dāruke ॥3-19-15॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; सूतकुले (sūtakule) - in the charioteer family; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; विनीतः (vinītaḥ) - trained; सूतकर्मणि (sūtakarmaṇi) - in the duties of a charioteer; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - are; वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; आहवेषु (āhaveṣu) - in battles; अपि (api) - also; दारुके (dāruke) - O Dāruka;]
(You and in the charioteer family born, trained in the duties of a charioteer, knower of dharma and are of the Vṛṣṇis in battles also, O Dāruka.)
O Dāruka, you were born in the charioteer family, are trained in the duties of a charioteer, are a knower of dharma, and are also among the Vṛṣṇis in battles. (3-19-15)
स जानंश्चरितं कृत्स्नं वृष्णीनां पृतनामुखे। अपयानं पुनः सौते मैवं कार्षीः कथञ्चन ॥३-१९-१६॥
sa jānaṁś caritaṁ kṛtsnaṁ vṛṣṇīnāṁ pṛtanāmukhe। apayānaṁ punaḥ saute maivaṁ kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana ॥3-19-16॥
[स (sa) - he; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; चरितं (caritam) - deed; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnam) - entire; वृष्णीनां (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; पृतनामुखे (pṛtanāmukhe) - in the forefront of battle; अपयानं (apayānam) - retreat; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सौते (saute) - O charioteer; मा (mā) - do not; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - you should do; कथञ्चन (kathaṁcana) - in any way;]
(He, knowing the entire deed of the Vṛṣṇis in the forefront of battle, retreat again, O charioteer, do not thus you should do in any way.)
He, knowing all the deeds of the Vṛṣṇis at the front of battle, said, "O charioteer, do not ever retreat again in this way." (3-19-16)
अपयातं हतं पृष्ठे भीतं रणपलायिनम्। गदाग्रजो दुराधर्षः किं मां वक्ष्यति माधवः ॥३-१९-१७॥
apayātaṃ hataṃ pṛṣṭhe bhītaṃ raṇapalāyinam। gadāgrajo durādharṣaḥ kiṃ māṃ vakṣyati mādhavaḥ ॥3-19-17॥
[अपयातम् (apayātam) - departed; हतम् (hatam) - slain; पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; भीतम् (bhītam) - frightened; रणपलायिनम् (raṇapalāyinam) - one fleeing from battle; गदाग्रजः (gadāgrajaḥ) - elder brother of Gadā; दुराधर्षः (durādharṣaḥ) - difficult to overcome; किम् (kim) - what; माम् (mām) - me; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava;]
(Departed, slain on the back, frightened, fleeing from battle—the elder brother of Gadā, difficult to overcome, what will he say to me, Mādhava?)
If I depart, slain on the back, frightened, fleeing from battle, what will the elder brother of Gadā, the unconquerable Mādhava, say to me? (3-19-17)
केशवस्याग्रजो वापि नीलवासा मदोत्कटः। किं वक्ष्यति महाबाहुर्बलदेवः समागतः ॥३-१९-१८॥
keśavasya agrajaḥ vā api nīlavāsā madotkaṭaḥ। kiṃ vakṣyati mahābāhuḥ baladevaḥ samāgataḥ॥3-19-18॥
[केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; अग्रजः (agrajaḥ) - elder brother; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; नीलवासा (nīlavāsā) - one wearing blue garment; मदोत्कटः (madotkaṭaḥ) - intensely proud; किं (kiṃ) - what; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; बलदेवः (baladevaḥ) - Baladeva; समागतः (samāgataḥ) - having arrived;]
(Of Keśava the elder brother or also the one wearing blue garment, intensely proud; what will the mighty-armed Baladeva, having arrived, say?)
What will Baladeva, the mighty-armed elder brother of Keśava, who is also clad in blue and intensely proud, say now that he has arrived? (3-19-18)
किं वक्ष्यति शिनेर्नप्ता नरसिंहो महाधनुः। अपयातं रणात्सौते साम्बश्च समितिञ्जयः ॥३-१९-१९॥
kiṁ vakṣyati śiner naptā narasiṁho mahādhanuḥ। apayātaṁ raṇāt saute sāmbaś ca samitiñjayaḥ ॥3-19-19॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; शिनेः (śineḥ) - of Śini; नप्ता (naptā) - grandson; नरसिंहः (narasiṁhaḥ) - Narasiṁha; महाधनुः (mahādhanuḥ) - great bowman; अपयातं (apayātaṁ) - departed; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; सौते (saute) - O charioteer; साम्बः (sāmbaḥ) - Sāmba; च (ca) - and; समिति-ञ्जयः (samitiñjayaḥ) - conqueror of assemblies (battles);]
(What will say of Śini's grandson Narasiṁha, the great bowman, having departed from battle, O charioteer, Sāmba and the conqueror of assemblies;)
O charioteer, what will Śini's grandson Narasiṁha, the great bowman, say about Sāmba and the conqueror of assemblies having left the battlefield? (3-19-19)
चारुदेष्णश्च दुर्धर्षस्तथैव गदसारणौ। अक्रूरश्च महाबाहुः किं मां वक्ष्यति सारथे ॥३-१९-२०॥
cārudeṣṇaś ca durdharṣas tathaiva gadasāraṇau। akrūraś ca mahābāhuḥ kiṁ māṁ vakṣyati sārathe ॥3-19-20॥

शूरं सम्भावितं सन्तं नित्यं पुरुषमानिनम्। स्त्रियश्च वृष्णीवीराणां किं मां वक्ष्यन्ति सङ्गताः ॥३-१९-२१॥
śūraṃ sambhāvitaṃ santaṃ nityaṃ puruṣamāninam। striyaś ca vṛṣṇīvīrāṇāṃ kiṃ māṃ vakṣyanti saṅgatāḥ ॥3-19-21॥

(Heroic, honored, virtuous, always, proud of manliness; women and of the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi clan; what me will say assembled; (3-19-21))
What will the assembled women of the Vṛṣṇi heroes say about me, who am always brave, honored, virtuous, and proud of my manliness? (3-19-21)
प्रद्युम्नोऽयमुपायाति भीतस्त्यक्त्वा महाहवम्। धिगेनमिति वक्ष्यन्ति न तु वक्ष्यन्ति साध्विति ॥३-१९-२२॥
pradyumno'ayam upāyāti bhītaḥ tyaktvā mahāhavam। dhig enam iti vakṣyanti na tu vakṣyanti sādhv iti ॥3-19-22॥

(Pradyumna, this (one), approaches, afraid, having abandoned, great battle. Shame, him, thus, they will say, not, but, they will say, good, thus.)
This Pradyumna, having abandoned the great battle out of fear, is approaching. People will say "Shame on him", but they will not say "Well done". (3-19-22)
धिग्वाचा परिहासोऽपि मम वा मद्विधस्य वा। मृत्युनाभ्यधिकः सौते स त्वं मा व्यपयाः पुनः ॥३-१९-२३॥
dhig-vācā parihāso'pi mama vā mad-vidhasya vā। mṛtyunābhyadhikaḥ saute sa tvaṃ mā vyapayāḥ punaḥ ॥3-19-23॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; परिहासः (parihāsaḥ) - mockery; अपि (api) - even; मम (mama) - of me; वा (vā) - or; मत्-विधस्य (mat-vidhasya) - of one like me; वा (vā) - or; मृत्युना (mṛtyunā) - by death; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - greater; सौते (saute) - O Sauti; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मा (mā) - do not; व्यपयाः (vyapayāḥ) - repeat; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Condemnation by speech, even mockery, of me or of one like me, is greater than death, O Sauti; he, you, do not repeat (it) again.)
O Sauti, even mockery by words, whether of me or of one like me, is worse than death; therefore, do not repeat it again. (3-19-23)
भारं हि मयि संन्यस्य यातो मधुनिहा हरिः। यज्ञं भरतसिंहस्य पार्थस्यामिततेजसः ॥३-१९-२४॥
bhāraṃ hi mayi saṃnyasya yāto madhuni-hā hariḥ। yajñaṃ bharata-siṃhasya pārthasya amita-tejasaḥ ॥3-19-24॥
[भारम् (bhāram) - burden; हि (hi) - indeed; मयि (mayi) - on me; संन्यस्य (saṃnyasya) - having placed; यातः (yātaḥ) - departed; मधुनिहा (madhuni-hā) - the slayer of Madhu; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; भरतसिंहस्य (bharata-siṃhasya) - of the lion of the Bharatas; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; अमिततेजसः (amita-tejasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(The burden indeed having placed on me, departed the slayer of Madhu, Hari. The sacrifice of the lion of the Bharatas, of Partha of immeasurable energy.)
Indeed, having placed the burden upon me, Hari, the slayer of Madhu, departed. The sacrifice of Partha, the lion of the Bharatas, who possesses immeasurable energy, (was thus left to me). (3-19-24)
कृतवर्मा मया वीरो निर्यास्यन्नेव वारितः। शाल्वं निवारयिष्येऽहं तिष्ठ त्वमिति सूतज ॥३-१९-२५॥
kṛtavarmā mayā vīro niryāsyanneva vāritaḥ। śālvaṃ nivārayiṣye'haṃ tiṣṭha tvamiti sūtaja ॥3-19-25॥
[कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kṛtavarmā; (proper name); मया (mayā) - by me; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; warrior; निर्यास्यन् (niryāsyan) - going out; departing; एव (eva) - just; indeed; वारितः (vāritaḥ) - was stopped; was restrained; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; (proper name); निवारयिष्ये (nivārayiṣye) - I will restrain; I will check; अहम् (aham) - I; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; stay; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus; so; सूतज (sūtaja) - O son of the charioteer;]
(Kṛtavarmā by me, the hero, just as he was departing, was restrained. Śālva I will restrain, I, stand you thus, O son of the charioteer.)
Kṛtavarmā, the hero, was stopped by me just as he was about to depart. I will restrain Śālva; you stay here, O son of the charioteer. (3-19-25)
स च सम्भावयन्मां वै निवृत्तो हृदिकात्मजः। तं समेत्य रणं त्यक्त्वा किं वक्ष्यामि महारथम् ॥३-१९-२६॥
sa ca sambhāvayan māṁ vai nivṛtto hṛdikātmajaḥ। taṁ sametya raṇaṁ tyaktvā kiṁ vakṣyāmi mahāratham ॥3-19-26॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; सम्भावयन् (sambhāvayan) - honouring; माम् (mām) - me; वै (vai) - indeed; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - withdrawn; हृदिकात्मजः (hṛdikātmajaḥ) - the son of Hṛidika; तं (taṁ) - him; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; रणम् (raṇam) - battle; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; किं (kiṁ) - what; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall I say; महारथम् (mahāratham) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(He and honouring me indeed withdrawn the son of Hṛidika; him having approached the battle having abandoned what shall I say the great chariot-warrior; (3-19-26))
And he, the son of Hṛidika, having honoured me, has withdrawn; having approached him and abandoned the battle, what shall I say to the great chariot-warrior? (3-19-26)
उपयातं दुराधर्षं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम्। पुरुषं पुण्डरीकाक्षं किं वक्ष्यामि महाभुजम् ॥३-१९-२७॥
upayātaṃ durādharṣaṃ śaṅkhacakragadādharam। puruṣaṃ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ kiṃ vakṣyāmi mahābhujam ॥3-19-27॥
[उपयातं (upayātam) - approached; दुराधर्षं (durādharṣam) - difficult to overcome; शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् (śaṅkhacakragadādharam) - bearing conch, discus, and mace; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; पुण्डरीकाक्षं (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - lotus-eyed; किं (kiṃ) - what; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall I say; महाभुजम् (mahābhujam) - mighty-armed;]
(Approached, difficult to overcome, bearing conch, discus, and mace, person, lotus-eyed, what shall I say, mighty-armed.)
What can I say about the mighty-armed, lotus-eyed person, who has approached, who is difficult to overcome, and who bears the conch, discus, and mace? (3-19-27)
सात्यकिं बलदेवं च ये चान्येऽन्धकवृष्णयः। मया स्पर्धन्ति सततं किं नु वक्ष्यामि तानहम् ॥३-१९-२८॥
sātyakiṃ baladevaṃ ca ye ca anye'ndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ। mayā spardhanti satataṃ kiṃ nu vakṣyāmi tān aham ॥3-19-28॥
[सात्यकिं (sātyakim) - Sātyaki; (a Yādava hero); बलदेवं (baladevam) - Baladeva; (Balarāma); च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; अन्धकवृष्णयः (andhakavṛṣṇayaḥ) - Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi (clansmen); मया (mayā) - by me; स्पर्धन्ति (spardhanti) - compete; vie; सततं (satatam) - always; continually; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; truly; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - shall I say; will I speak; तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Sātyaki, Baladeva and who and others Andhaka-Vṛṣṇis, by me compete always; what indeed shall I say them I.)
Sātyaki, Baladeva, and the other Andhaka and Vṛṣṇi clansmen always compete with me; what indeed shall I say about them? (3-19-28)
त्यक्त्वा रणमिमं सौते पृष्ठतोऽभ्याहतः शरैः। त्वयापनीतो विवशो न जीवेयं कथञ्चन ॥३-१९-२९॥
tyaktvā raṇam imaṃ saute pṛṣṭhato'bhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ। tvayāpanīto vivaśo na jīveyaṃ kathaṃcana ॥3-19-29॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; रणम् (raṇam) - battle; इमम् (imam) - this; सौते (saute) - O charioteer; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अभ्याहतः (abhyāhataḥ) - struck; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपनीतः (apanītaḥ) - removed; विवशः (vivaśaḥ) - helpless; न (na) - not; जीवेयम् (jīveyaṃ) - would I live; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Having abandoned this battle, O charioteer, struck from behind by arrows, removed by you, helpless, not would I live in any way.)
O charioteer, having abandoned this battle and being struck from behind by arrows, if I am removed by you and rendered helpless, I would not wish to live in any way. (3-19-29)
स निवर्त रथेनाशु पुनर्दारुकनन्दन। न चैतदेवं कर्तव्यमथापत्सु कथञ्चन ॥३-१९-३०॥
sa nivarta rathena āśu punar dāruka-nandana। na ca etad evaṃ kartavyam atha āpatsu kathaṃcana ॥3-19-30॥
[स (sa) - he; निवर्त (nivarta) - return; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; आशु (āśu) - quickly; पुनः (punar) - again; दारुकनन्दन (dāruka-nandana) - O son of Dāruka; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; अथ (atha) - but; आपत्सु (āpatsu) - in dangers; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(He return by chariot quickly again, O son of Dāruka. Not and this thus should be done, but in dangers in any way.)
Return quickly by chariot again, O son of Dāruka. This should not be done in this way, except in cases of danger, in any way. (3-19-30)
न जीवितमहं सौते बहु मन्ये कदाचन। अपयातो रणाद्भीतः पृष्ठतोऽभ्याहतः शरैः ॥३-१९-३१॥
na jīvitam ahaṃ saute bahu manye kadācana। apayāto raṇād bhītaḥ pṛṣṭhato'bhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ ॥3-19-31॥
[न (na) - not; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; अहम् (aham) - I; सौते (saute) - O charioteer; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्ये (manye) - I consider; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; अपयातः (apayātaḥ) - departed; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अभ्याहतः (abhyāhataḥ) - struck; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows;]
(Not life I, O charioteer, much consider at any time; departed from battle, afraid, from behind struck by arrows.)
O charioteer, I never value life much if one flees from battle in fear and is struck from behind by arrows. (3-19-31)
कदा वा सूतपुत्र त्वं जानीषे मां भयार्दितम्। अपयातं रणं हित्वा यथा कापुरुषं तथा ॥३-१९-३२॥
kadā vā sūtaputra tvaṃ jānīṣe māṃ bhayārditam। apayātaṃ raṇaṃ hitvā yathā kāpuruṣaṃ tathā ॥3-19-32॥
[कदा (kadā) - when; वा (vā) - or; सूतपुत्र (sūtaputra) - son of a charioteer; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - do you know; माम् (mām) - me; भयार्दितम् (bhayārditam) - afflicted by fear; अपयातम् (apayātam) - departed; रणम् (raṇam) - battle; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; यथा (yathā) - just as; कापुरुषम् (kāpuruṣam) - coward; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(When or, O son of a charioteer, do you know me afflicted by fear, having departed from the battle, just as a coward so.)
O son of a charioteer, when have you ever seen me, afflicted by fear, abandon the battle and flee like a coward? (3-19-32)
न युक्तं भवता त्यक्तुं सङ्ग्रामं दारुकात्मज। मयि युद्धार्थिनि भृशं स त्वं याहि यतो रणम् ॥३-१९-३३॥
na yuktaṃ bhavatā tyaktuṃ saṅgrāmaṃ dārukātmaja। mayi yuddhārthini bhṛśaṃ sa tvaṃ yāhi yato raṇam ॥3-19-33॥
[न (na) - not; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - proper; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; त्यक्तुं (tyaktuṃ) - to abandon; सङ्ग्रामं (saṅgrāmaṃ) - battle; दारुकात्मज (dārukātmaja) - O son of Dāruka; मयि (mayi) - when I; युद्धार्थिनि (yuddhārthini) - desiring battle; भृशं (bhṛśaṃ) - greatly; स (sa) - therefore; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; याहि (yāhi) - go; यतः (yataḥ) - where; रणम् (raṇam) - battle;]
(Not proper by you to abandon battle, O son of Dāruka; when I, desiring battle, greatly, therefore you go where battle.)
It is not proper for you to abandon the battle, O son of Dāruka; since I am greatly desiring battle, therefore you go where the battle is. (3-19-33)
