Pancharatra: Pradyumna is overpowered by Shalva in the battle.

एवमुक्त्वा रौक्मिणेयो यादवान्भरतर्षभ। दंशितैर्हरिभिर्युक्तं रथमास्थाय काञ्चनम् ॥३-१८-१॥
evam uktvā raukmiṇeyo yādavān bharatarṣabha। daṃśitaiḥ haribhir yuktaṃ ratham āsthāya kāñcanam ॥3-18-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; रौक्मिणेयः (raukmiṇeyaḥ) - son of Rukmiṇī; यादवान् (yādavān) - the Yādavas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; दंशितैः (daṃśitaiḥ) - with adorned; हरिभिः (haribhiḥ) - with horses; युक्तम् (yuktam) - yoked; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having mounted; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - golden;]
(Thus having spoken, the son of Rukmiṇī, O bull among the Bharatas, having mounted the golden chariot yoked with adorned horses, (addressed) the Yādavas.)
After saying this, the son of Rukmiṇī, O best of the Bharatas, mounted the golden chariot yoked with decorated horses and addressed the Yādavas. (3-18-1)
उच्छ्रित्य मकरं केतुं व्यात्ताननमलङ्कृतम्। उत्पतद्भिरिवाकाशं तैर्हयैरन्वयात्परान् ॥३-१८-२॥
ucchṛtya makaraṃ ketuṃ vyāttānanam-alaṅkṛtam। utpatadbhir-ivākāśaṃ tair-hayair-anvayāt-parān ॥3-18-2॥

(Having raised the makara-banner adorned with a gaping mouth, as if the sky was leapt upon by those horses, he pursued the enemies.)

विक्षिपन्नादयंश्चापि धनुःश्रेष्ठं महाबलः। तूणखड्गधरः शूरो बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् ॥३-१८-३॥

(Casting and making sound also the best bow, the mighty one, quiver and sword bearer, hero, wearing bound lizard-finger-guard.)
The mighty hero, bearing a quiver and sword, casting and making the best bow resound, and wearing a bound lizard-finger-guard. (3-18-3)
स विद्युच्चलितं चापं विहरन्वै तलात्तलम्। मोहयामास दैतेयान्सर्वान्सौभनिवासिनः ॥३-१८-४॥
sa vidyuc-calitaṃ cāpaṃ viharann vai talāt-talam। mohayām āsa daiteyān sarvān saubha-nivāsinaḥ ॥3-18-4॥
[स (sa) - he; विद्युच्चलितं (vidyuc-calitaṃ) - lightning-moved; चापं (cāpaṃ) - bow; विहरन् (viharann) - moving about; वै (vai) - indeed; तलात्तलम् (talāt-talam) - from plane to plane; मोहयामास (mohayām āsa) - caused to be deluded; दैतेयान् (daiteyān) - the Daityas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सौभनिवासिनः (saubha-nivāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of Saubha;]
(He, with a lightning-moved bow, moving about indeed from plane to plane, caused all the Daityas, the inhabitants of Saubha, to be deluded.)
He, wielding a bow that moved like lightning, roamed from level to level and bewildered all the Daityas, the inhabitants of Saubha. (3-18-4)
नास्य विक्षिपतश्चापं संदधानस्य चासकृत्। अन्तरं ददृशे कश्चिन्निघ्नतः शात्रवान्रणे ॥३-१८-५॥
nāsya vikṣipataś cāpaṃ saṃdadhānasya cāsakṛt। antaraṃ dadṛśe kaścin nighnataḥ śātravān raṇe ॥3-18-5॥
[न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - his; विक्षिपतः (vikṣipataḥ) - of (him) who is shooting; चापं (cāpaṃ) - bow; संदधानस्य (saṃdadhānasya) - of (him) who is stringing (the bow); च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; अन्तरं (antaraṃ) - interval; gap; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - saw; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; निघ्नतः (nighnataḥ) - of (him) who is striking; शात्रवान् (śātravān) - enemies; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Not his of (him) who is shooting bow of (him) who is stringing (the bow) and repeatedly interval; gap; saw anyone of (him) who is striking enemies in battle.)
No one could see any interval, repeatedly, between him shooting and stringing his bow as he struck down enemies in battle. (3-18-5)
मुखस्य वर्णो न विकल्पतेऽस्य; चेलुश्च गात्राणि न चापि तस्य। सिंहोन्नतं चाप्यभिगर्जतोऽस्य; शुश्राव लोकोऽद्भुतरूपमग्र्यम् ॥३-१८-६॥
mukhasya varṇo na vikalpate'sya; celuś ca gātrāṇi na cāpi tasya. siṃhonnataṃ cāpy abhigarjato'sya; śuśrāva loko'dbhutarūpam agryam ॥3-18-6॥
[मुखस्य (mukhasya) - of the face; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; न (na) - not; विकल्पते (vikalpate) - changes; अस्य (asya) - of him; चेलुः (celuḥ) - moved; च (ca) - and; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सिंह-उन्नतं (siṃha-unnataṃ) - lion-raised; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभिगर्जतः (abhigarjataḥ) - roaring; अस्य (asya) - of him; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; अद्भुत-रूपम् (adbhuta-rūpam) - wonderful form; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - excellent;]
(Of the face color not changes of him; moved and limbs not and also of him. Lion-raised and also roaring of him; heard the world wonderful form excellent.)
The color of his face did not change; nor did his limbs move. Even as he roared with a lion-like raised voice, the world heard his most wonderful and excellent form. (3-18-6)
जलेचरः काञ्चनयष्टिसंस्थो; व्यात्ताननः सर्वतिमिप्रमाथी। वित्रासयन्राजति वाहमुख्ये; शाल्वस्य सेनाप्रमुखे ध्वजाग्र्यः ॥३-१८-७॥
jale-caraḥ kāñcana-yaṣṭi-saṃsthaḥ; vyāttānanaḥ sarva-timi-pramāthī. vitrāsayan rājati vāha-mukhye; śālvasya senā-pramukhe dhvajāgryaḥ ॥3-18-7॥
[जलेचरः (jale-caraḥ) - water-dweller; काञ्चनयष्टिसंस्थः (kāñcana-yaṣṭi-saṃsthaḥ) - golden-pole-upon-standing; व्यात्ताननः (vyātta-ānanaḥ) - wide-open-mouthed; सर्वतिमिप्रमाथी (sarva-timi-pramāthī) - all-whale-destroyer; वित्रासयन् (vitrāsayan) - causing-fear; राजति (rājati) - shines; वाहमुख्ये (vāha-mukhye) - in-the-chief-of-mounts; शाल्वस्य (śālvasya) - of-Śālva; सेनाप्रमुखे (senā-pramukhe) - in-the-army-chief; ध्वजाग्र्यः (dhvaja-agryaḥ) - foremost-banner;]
(The water-dweller, standing upon a golden pole; wide-open-mouthed, destroyer of all whales; causing fear, shines in the chief of mounts; in the army-chief of Śālva, the foremost banner.)
The aquatic creature, mounted on a golden staff, with its mouth wide open and capable of destroying all whales, shines fearfully atop the foremost mount; it is the chief banner on the army leader of Śālva. (3-18-7)
ततः स तूर्णं निष्पत्य प्रद्युम्नः शत्रुकर्शनः। शाल्वमेवाभिदुद्राव विधास्यन्कलहं नृप ॥३-१८-८॥
tataḥ sa tūrṇaṃ niṣpatya pradyumnaḥ śatrukarśanaḥ। śālvam evābhidudrāva vidhāsyan kalahaṃ nṛpa ॥3-18-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - quickly; निष्पत्य (niṣpatya) - having gone out; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; शत्रुकर्शनः (śatrukarśanaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिदुद्राव (abhidudrāva) - rushed towards; विधास्यन् (vidhāsyan) - intending to cause; कलहं (kalahaṃ) - conflict; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Then he quickly having gone out, Pradyumna, destroyer of enemies, indeed rushed towards Śālva, intending to cause conflict, O king.)
Then Pradyumna, the destroyer of enemies, quickly went out and rushed towards Śālva, intending to engage in battle, O king. (3-18-8)
अभियानं तु वीरेण प्रद्युम्नेन महाहवे। नामर्षयत सङ्क्रुद्धः शाल्वः कुरुकुलोद्वह ॥३-१८-९॥
abhiyānaṃ tu vīreṇa pradyumnena mahāhave। nāmarṣayata saṅkruddhaḥ śālvaḥ kurukulodvaha ॥3-18-9॥
[अभियानम् (abhiyānam) - attack; तु (tu) - but; वीरेण (vīreṇa) - by the hero; प्रद्युम्नेन (pradyumnena) - by Pradyumna; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; न (na) - not; अमर्षयत (amarṣayata) - endured; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - greatly enraged; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulodvaha) - O best of the Kuru race;]
(But the attack by the hero Pradyumna in the great battle, Śālva, greatly enraged, did not endure, O best of the Kuru race.)

स रोषमदमत्तो वै कामगादवरुह्य च। प्रद्युम्नं योधयामास शाल्वः परपुरञ्जयः ॥३-१८-१०॥
sa roṣamadamattō vai kāmagādavaruhya ca। pradyumnaṃ yōdhayāmāsa śālvaḥ parapurañjayaḥ ॥3-18-10॥
[स (sa) - he; रोषमदमत्तः (roṣamadamattaḥ) - filled with anger and intoxication; वै (vai) - indeed; कामगात् (kāmagāt) - from the aerial car; अवरुह्य (avaruhya) - having descended; च (ca) - and; प्रद्युम्नम् (pradyumnam) - Pradyumna; योधयामास (yōdhayāmāsa) - he fought; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(He, filled with anger and intoxication indeed, having descended from the aerial car and, Pradyumna he fought, Śālva, conqueror of enemy cities.)

तयोः सुतुमुलं युद्धं शाल्ववृष्णिप्रवीरयोः। समेता ददृशुर्लोका बलिवासवयोरिव ॥३-१८-११॥
tayoḥ sutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ śālvavṛṣṇipravīrayoḥ। sametā dadṛśurlokā balivāsavayoriva ॥3-18-11॥

(Of those two, a very tumultuous battle of the heroes of Śālva and Vṛṣṇi, having come together, the worlds saw, like (the battle) of Bali and Vāsava (Indra).)

तस्य मायामयो वीर रथो हेमपरिष्कृतः। सध्वजः सपताकश्च सानुकर्षः सतूणवान् ॥३-१८-१२॥

(Of him, the magical hero's chariot adorned with gold, with a banner, with a flag and with a yoke, with a quiver.)

स तं रथवरं श्रीमान्समारुह्य किल प्रभो। मुमोच बाणान्कौरव्य प्रद्युम्नाय महाबलः ॥३-१८-१३॥

(He that excellent chariot prosperous one having mounted indeed O lord released arrows O descendant of Kuru at Pradyumna the mighty one.)
O descendant of Kuru, the mighty one, having mounted that excellent chariot, O lord, indeed released arrows at Pradyumna. (3-18-13)
ततो बाणमयं वर्षं व्यसृजत्तरसा रणे। प्रद्युम्नो भुजवेगेन शाल्वं संमोहयन्निव ॥३-१८-१४॥
tato bāṇamayaṃ varṣaṃ vyasṛjattarasa raṇe। pradyumno bhujavegena śālvaṃ saṃmohayanniva ॥3-18-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; बाणमयम् (bāṇamayam) - consisting of arrows; वर्षम् (varṣam) - shower; विसृजत् (visṛjat) - releasing; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; भुजवेगेन (bhujavegena) - by the speed of the arm; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; संमोहयन् (saṃmohayan) - bewildering; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Then, a shower consisting of arrows releasing with force in battle, Pradyumna by the speed of the arm Śālva bewildering as if.)

स तैरभिहतः सङ्ख्ये नामर्षयत सौभराट्। शरान्दीप्ताग्निसङ्काशान्मुमोच तनये मम ॥३-१८-१५॥
sa tair abhihataḥ saṅkhye nāmarṣayata saubharāṭ. śarān dīptāgni-saṅkāśān mumoca tanaye mama ॥3-18-15॥

(He, struck by them in battle, did not tolerate, the king of the Saubhas; arrows resembling blazing fire released at the son my.)
Struck by them in battle, the king of the Saubhas could not tolerate it and released arrows, blazing like fire, at my son. (3-18-15)
स शाल्वबाणै राजेन्द्र विद्धो रुक्मिणिनन्दनः। मुमोच बाणं त्वरितो मर्मभेदिनमाहवे ॥३-१८-१६॥
sa śālvabāṇai rājendra viddho rukmiṇinandanaḥ। mumoca bāṇaṃ tvarito marmabhedinamāhave ॥3-18-16॥

तस्य वर्म विभिद्याशु स बाणो मत्सुतेरितः। बिभेद हृदयं पत्री स पपात मुमोह च ॥३-१८-१७॥

(Of him armor having pierced quickly, that arrow discharged by the son of Matsya pierced (his) heart, the feathered (arrow); he fell and became unconscious.)

तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे शाल्वराजे विचेतसि। सम्प्राद्रवन्दानवेन्द्रा दारयन्तो वसुन्धराम् ॥३-१८-१८॥
tasminnipatite vīre śālvarāje vicetasi। samprādravandānavendrā dārayanto vasundharām ॥3-18-18॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; वीरे (vīre) - hero; शाल्वराजे (śālvarāje) - king of Śālva; विचेतसि (vicetasi) - unconscious; सम् (sam) - together; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - fled; दानवेन्द्राः (dānavendrāḥ) - lords of the Dānavas; दारयन्तः (dārayantaḥ) - tearing; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth;]
(In that (moment), with the hero, king of Śālva, having fallen unconscious, the lords of the Dānavas together fled, tearing the earth.)
When the heroic king of Śālva fell unconscious, the lords of the Dānavas all fled, tearing up the earth as they went. (3-18-18)
हाहाकृतमभूत्सैन्यं शाल्वस्य पृथिवीपते। नष्टसञ्ज्ञे निपतिते तदा सौभपतौ नृप ॥३-१८-१९॥
hāhākṛtam abhūt sainyaṃ śālvasya pṛthivīpate| naṣṭasañjñe nipatite tadā saubhapatau nṛpa ॥3-18-19॥
[हाहाकृतम् (hāhākṛtam) - made with cries of distress; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; शाल्वस्य (śālvasya) - of Śālva; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; नष्टसञ्ज्ञे (naṣṭasañjñe) - with consciousness lost; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; तदा (tadā) - then; सौभपतौ (saubhapatau) - when the lord of Saubha; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(The army of Śālva, O lord of the earth, became filled with cries of distress when the lord of Saubha, having lost consciousness, fell then, O king.)
O king, when the lord of Saubha lost consciousness and fell, the army of Śālva, O lord of the earth, was thrown into an uproar of distress. (3-18-19)
तत उत्थाय कौरव्य प्रतिलभ्य च चेतनाम्। मुमोच बाणं तरसा प्रद्युम्नाय महाबलः ॥३-१८-२०॥
tat utthāya kauravya pratilabhya ca cetanām। mumoca bāṇaṃ tarasā pradyumnāya mahābalaḥ ॥3-18-20॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; च (ca) - and; चेतनाम् (cetanām) - consciousness; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; बाणम् (bāṇam) - arrow; तरसा (tarasā) - with speed; प्रद्युम्नाय (pradyumnāya) - towards Pradyumna; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one;]
(Then, having risen, O descendant of Kuru, having regained consciousness and, the mighty one released an arrow with speed towards Pradyumna.)
Then, O descendant of Kuru, having regained consciousness and risen, the mighty warrior swiftly released an arrow at Pradyumna. (3-18-20)
तेन विद्धो महाबाहुः प्रद्युम्नः समरे स्थितः। जत्रुदेशे भृशं वीरो व्यवासीदद्रथे तदा ॥३-१८-२१॥

ततो मोहं समापन्ने तनये मम भारत। मुमोच बाणांस्त्वरितः पुनरन्यान्दुरासदान् ॥३-१८-२३॥
tato mohaṃ samāpanne tanaye mama bhārata। mumoca bāṇāṃstvaritaḥ punaranyāndurāsadān ॥3-18-23॥

(Then, when my son had fallen into delusion, O Bhārata, he quickly released other arrows, difficult to approach, again.)

sa tair abhihato bāṇair bahubhis tena mohitaḥ। niśceṣṭaḥ kauravaśreṣṭha pradyumno'bhūd raṇājire ॥3-18-24॥
