Pancharatra: For a moment even Krishna is overpowered by Shalva’s illusion!
वासुदेव उवाच॥

Vāsudeva said.
एवं स पुरुषव्याघ्र शाल्वो राज्ञां महारिपुः। युध्यमानो मया सङ्ख्ये वियदभ्यागमत्पुनः ॥३-२२-१॥
evaṃ sa puruṣavyāghra śālvo rājñāṃ mahāripuḥ। yudhyamāno mayā saṅkhye viyadabhyāgamatpunaḥ ॥3-22-1॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; स (sa) - he; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva (proper name); राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; महारिपुः (mahāripuḥ) - great enemy; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; मया (mayā) - by me; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; वियत् (viyat) - sky; अभ्यागमत् (abhyāgamat) - approached; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus he, the tiger among men, Śālva, the great enemy of kings, fighting with me in battle, again approached the sky.)
In this way, Śālva, the tiger among men and a great enemy of kings, while fighting with me in battle, once again ascended into the sky. (3-22-1)
ततः शतघ्नीश्च महागदाश्च; दीप्तांश्च शूलान्मुसलानसींश्च। चिक्षेप रोषान्मयि मन्दबुद्धिः; शाल्वो महाराज जयाभिकाङ्क्षी ॥३-२२-२॥
tataḥ śataghnīś ca mahāgadāś ca; dīptāṃś ca śūlān musalān asīṃś ca. cikṣepa roṣāt mayi mandabuddhiḥ; śālvaḥ mahārāja jayābhikāṅkṣī ॥3-22-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शतघ्नीः (śataghnīḥ) - hundred-slaying weapons; च (ca) - and; महागदाः (mahāgadāḥ) - great maces; च (ca) - and; दीप्तान् (dīptān) - blazing; च (ca) - and; शूलान् (śūlān) - spears; मुसलान् (musalān) - clubs; असीन् (asīn) - swords; च (ca) - and; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - hurled; रोषात् (roṣāt) - from anger; मयि (mayi) - at me; मन्दबुद्धिः (mandabuddhiḥ) - dull-witted; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Śālva; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; जयाभिकाङ्क्षी (jayābhikāṅkṣī) - desiring victory;]
(Then hundred-slaying weapons and great maces and blazing spears, clubs, swords and, hurled from anger at me, the dull-witted Śālva, great king, desiring victory.)
Then, Śālva, the dull-witted great king, desiring victory, hurled at me hundred-slaying weapons, great maces, blazing spears, clubs, and swords in his anger. (3-22-2)
तानाशुगैरापततोऽहमाशु; निवार्य तूर्णं खगमान्ख एव। द्विधा त्रिधा चाच्छिनमाशु मुक्तै; स्ततोऽन्तरिक्षे निनदो बभूव ॥३-२२-३॥
tān āśugair āpatato'ham āśu; nivārya tūrṇaṃ khagamān kha eva। dvidhā tridhā cācchinam āśu muktaiḥ; tataḥ antarikṣe ninadaḥ babhūva ॥3-22-3॥
[तान् (tān) - them; आशुगैः (āśugaiḥ) - with swift (arrows); आपततः (āpatataḥ) - rushing; अहम् (aham) - I; आशु (āśu) - quickly; निवार्य (nivārya) - having repelled; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - swiftly; खगमान् (khagamān) - birds (arrows); ख (kha) - in the sky; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two; त्रिधा (tridhā) - in three; च (ca) - and; आच्छिनम् (ācchinam) - I cut; आशु (āśu) - quickly; मुक्तैः (muktaiḥ) - released (arrows); स्ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; निनदः (ninadaḥ) - sound; बभूव (babhūva) - arose;]
(Them with swift (arrows) rushing I quickly; having repelled swiftly birds (arrows) in the sky indeed. In two, in three and I cut quickly with released (arrows); then in the sky sound arose.)
I quickly repelled those who were rushing at me with swift arrows; I swiftly cut down the flying arrows in the sky into two and three pieces with my released arrows. Then, a sound arose in the sky. (3-22-3)
ततः शतसहस्रेण शराणां नतपर्वणाम्। दारुकं वाजिनश्चैव रथं च समवाकिरत् ॥३-२२-४॥
tataḥ śatasahasreṇa śarāṇāṃ nataparvaṇām। dārukaṃ vājinaś caiva rathaṃ ca samavākirat ॥3-22-4॥

(Then with a hundred thousand of arrows with bent joints, Dāruka, the horses, and the chariot indeed and covered completely.)
Then, with a hundred thousand arrows with bent joints, he completely covered Dāruka, the horses, and the chariot. (3-22-4)
ततो मामब्रवीद्वीर दारुको विह्वलन्निव। स्थातव्यमिति तिष्ठामि शाल्वबाणप्रपीडितः ॥३-२२-५॥
tato mām abravīd vīra dāruko vihvalan niva। sthātavyam iti tiṣṭhāmi śālvabāṇaprapīḍitaḥ ॥3-22-5॥

(Then to me said hero Dāruka, agitated as if: "One must stand" thus I stand, afflicted by Śālva's arrow.)
Then, the hero Dāruka, appearing agitated, said to me: "You must stand." So I remain standing, afflicted by Śālva's arrow. (3-22-5)
इति तस्य निशम्याहं सारथेः करुणं वचः। अवेक्षमाणो यन्तारमपश्यं शरपीडितम् ॥३-२२-६॥
iti tasya niśamyāhaṃ sāratheḥ karuṇaṃ vacaḥ। avekṣamāṇo yantāram apaśyaṃ śarapīḍitam ॥3-22-6॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; अहम् (aham) - I; सारथेः (sāratheḥ) - of the charioteer; करुणम् (karuṇam) - pitiful; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; अवेक्षमाणः (avekṣamāṇaḥ) - looking; यन्तारम् (yantāram) - the charioteer; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - I saw; शरपीडितम् (śarapīḍitam) - afflicted by arrows;]
(Thus, having heard his pitiful speech of the charioteer, I, looking, saw the charioteer afflicted by arrows.)
Thus, having heard the charioteer's pitiful words, I looked and saw the charioteer wounded by arrows. (3-22-6)
न तस्योरसि नो मूर्ध्नि न काये न भुजद्वये। अन्तरं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ पश्यामि नहतं शरैः ॥३-२२-७॥
na tasyorasi no mūrdhni na kāye na bhujadvaye। antaraṃ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha paśyāmi nahataṃ śaraiḥ ॥3-22-7॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; उरसि (urasi) - on the chest; नो (no) - nor; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; न (na) - not; काये (kāye) - on the body; न (na) - not; भुजद्वये (bhujadvaye) - on the two arms; अन्तरं (antaraṃ) - difference; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha) - O best of the Pāṇḍavas; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नहतं (nahataṃ) - not struck; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows;]
(Not on his chest nor on the head, not on the body, not on the two arms, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, I see any difference not struck by arrows.)
O best of the Pāṇḍavas, I do not see any part of his chest, head, body, or both arms that has not been struck by arrows. (3-22-7)
स तु बाणवरोत्पीडाद्विस्रवत्यसृगुल्बणम्। अभिवृष्टो यथा मेघैर्गिरिर्गैरिकधातुमान् ॥३-२२-८॥
sa tu bāṇavarotpīḍād visravaty asṛgulbaṇam। abhivṛṣṭo yathā meghair girir gairikadhātumān ॥3-22-8॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; बाणवरोत्पीडात् (bāṇavara-utpīḍāt) - from the pressure of the best arrow; विस्रवति (visravati) - flows; असृगुल्बणम् (asṛg-ulbaṇam) - abundant blood; अभिवृष्टः (abhivṛṣṭaḥ) - having been rained upon; यथा (yathā) - just as; मेघैः (meghaiḥ) - by clouds; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; गैरिकधातुमान् (gairika-dhātumān) - possessing red ochre ore;]
(He but from the pressure of the best arrow flows abundant blood; having been rained upon just as by clouds mountain possessing red ochre ore;)
But he, from the pressure of the best arrow, flows with abundant blood, just as a mountain possessing red ochre ore flows when rained upon by clouds. (3-22-8)
अभीषुहस्तं तं दृष्ट्वा सीदन्तं सारथिं रणे। अस्तम्भयं महाबाहो शाल्वबाणप्रपीडितम् ॥३-२२-९॥
abhīṣuhastaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā sīdantaṃ sārathiṃ raṇe। astambhayaṃ mahābāho śālvabāṇaprapīḍitam ॥3-22-9॥
[अभीषुहस्तं (abhīṣuhastam) - with hand on the reins; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सीदन्तं (sīdantam) - sinking; सारथिं (sārathim) - the charioteer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अस्तम्भयं (astambhayaṃ) - I supported; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; शाल्वबाणप्रपीडितम् (śālvabāṇaprapīḍitam) - afflicted by Śālva's arrows;]
(With hand on the reins, him having seen sinking charioteer in battle, I supported, O mighty-armed, afflicted by Śālva's arrows.)
O mighty-armed one, seeing the charioteer, with his hand on the reins, sinking in battle and afflicted by Śālva's arrows, I supported him. (3-22-9)
अथ मां पुरुषः कश्चिद्द्वारकानिलयोऽब्रवीत्। त्वरितो रथमभ्येत्य सौहृदादिव भारत ॥३-२२-१०॥
atha māṃ puruṣaḥ kaścid dvārakānilayo'bravīt। tvarito ratham abhyetya sauhṛdād iva bhārata ॥3-22-10॥
[अथ (atha) - then; माम् (mām) - me; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; द्वारका (dvārakā) - Dvārakā; निलयः (nilayaḥ) - resident; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; सौहृदात् (sauhṛdāt) - from friendship; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then me a man someone Dvārakā resident spoke; quickly chariot approaching from friendship as if O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, a certain man, a resident of Dvārakā, quickly approached my chariot and spoke to me as if out of friendship. (3-22-10)
आहुकस्य वचो वीर तस्यैव परिचारकः। विषण्णः सन्नकण्ठो वै तन्निबोध युधिष्ठिर ॥३-२२-११॥
āhukasya vaco vīra tasyaiva paricārakaḥ। viṣaṇṇaḥ sannakaṇṭho vai tannibodha yudhiṣṭhira ॥3-22-11॥
[आहुकस्य (āhukasya) - of Āhuka; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; वीर (vīra) - O hero; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of him indeed; परिचारकः (paricārakaḥ) - attendant; विषण्णः (viṣaṇṇaḥ) - dejected; सन्नकण्ठः (sannakaṇṭhaḥ) - with choked throat; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(O hero, the speech of Āhuka, his very attendant, dejected, with choked throat indeed, that listen, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, listen to the words of Āhuka, whose very attendant, dejected and with a choked throat, spoke thus. (3-22-11)
द्वारकाधिपतिर्वीर आह त्वामाहुको वचः। केशवेह विजानीष्व यत्त्वां पितृसखोऽब्रवीत् ॥३-२२-१२॥
dvārakādhipatir vīra āha tvām āhuko vacaḥ। keśaveha vijānīṣva yat tvāṃ pitṛsakho'bravīt ॥3-22-12॥
[द्वारकाधिपति: (dvārakādhipatiḥ) - lord of Dvārakā; वीर (vīra) - hero; आह (āha) - said; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; आहुक: (āhukaḥ) - Āhuka (Ugrasena); वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; केशव (keśava) - Keśava; इह (iha) - here; विजानीष्व (vijānīṣva) - know; यत् (yat) - which; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; पितृसख: (pitṛsakhaḥ) - friend of your father; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(The lord of Dvārakā, hero, said to you, Āhuka's speech. Keśava, here know which to you the friend of your father said.)
The lord of Dvārakā, O hero, spoke to you the words of Āhuka. O Keśava, here, know what the friend of your father said to you. (3-22-12)
उपयात्वाद्य शाल्वेन द्वारकां वृष्णिनन्दन। विषक्ते त्वयि दुर्धर्ष हतः शूरसुतो बलात् ॥३-२२-१३॥
upayātvādya śālvena dvārakāṃ vṛṣṇinandana। viṣakte tvayi durdharṣa hataḥ śūrasuto balāt ॥3-22-13॥
[उपयात्वा (upayātvā) - having approached; having come near; अद्य (adya) - today; शाल्वेन (śālvena) - by Śālva; द्वारकां (dvārakāṃ) - Dvārakā (the city); वृष्णिनन्दन (vṛṣṇinandana) - O delight of the Vṛṣṇis; O son of the Vṛṣṇi clan; विषक्ते (viṣakte) - when you were engaged; when you were separated; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; upon you; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - O unconquerable one; हतः (hataḥ) - was slain; was killed; शूरसुतः (śūrasutaḥ) - the son of Śūra; बलात् (balāt) - by force; forcibly;]
(Having approached today by Śālva to Dvārakā, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, when you were engaged, O unconquerable one, the son of Śūra was slain by force.)
O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, today Śālva approached Dvārakā, and while you were away, O unconquerable one, the son of Śūra was forcibly slain. (3-22-13)
तदलं साधु युद्धेन निवर्तस्व जनार्दन। द्वारकामेव रक्षस्व कार्यमेतन्महत्तव ॥३-२२-१४॥
tad alaṃ sādhu yuddhena nivartasva janārdana। dvārakām eva rakṣasva kāryam etan mahat tava ॥3-22-14॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अलम् (alam) - enough; साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; युद्धेन (yuddhena) - by battle; निवर्तस्व (nivartasva) - turn back; withdraw; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - Dvaraka; एव (eva) - only; indeed; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect; कार्यम् (kāryam) - duty; task; एतत् (etat) - this; महत् (mahat) - great; तव (tava) - your;]
(That is enough, well, by battle withdraw, O Janardana. Dvaraka only protect, duty this great your.)
That is enough, O Janardana; withdraw from battle. Protect Dvaraka only—this is your great duty. (3-22-14)
इत्यहं तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा परमदुर्मनाः। निश्चयं नाधिगच्छामि कर्तव्यस्येतरस्य वा ॥३-२२-१५॥
ityahaṃ tasya vacanaṃ śrutvā paramadurmanaḥ। niścayaṃ nādhigacchāmi kartavyasyetarasya vā ॥3-22-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; परमदुर्मनाः (paramadurmanaḥ) - extremely distressed in mind; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - certainty; न (na) - not; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - I obtain; कर्तव्यस्य (kartavyasya) - of what is to be done; इतरस्य (itarasya) - of the other; वा (vā) - or;]
(Thus I, having heard his speech, extremely distressed in mind, do not obtain certainty of what is to be done or of the other.)
Thus, having heard his words, I am extremely troubled in mind and cannot decide what should be done or otherwise. (3-22-15)
सात्यकिं बलदेवं च प्रद्युम्नं च महारथम्। जगर्हे मनसा वीर तच्छ्रुत्वा विप्रियं वचः ॥३-२२-१६॥
sātyakiṃ baladevaṃ ca pradyumnaṃ ca mahāratham। jagarhe manasā vīra tacchrutvā vipriyaṃ vacaḥ ॥3-22-16॥
[सात्यकिं (sātyakim) - Sātyaki; (a warrior's name); बलदेवं (baladevam) - Baladeva; (Balarāma, a warrior's name); च (ca) - and; प्रद्युम्नं (pradyumnam) - Pradyumna; (a warrior's name); च (ca) - and; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior; जगर्हे (jagarhe) - censured; blamed; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; वीर (vīra) - hero; तच्छ्रुत्वा (tacchrutvā) - having heard that; विप्रियं (vipriyam) - unpleasant; disagreeable; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; speech;]
(Sātyaki, Baladeva and Pradyumna, the great chariot-warrior, (he) censured with (his) mind, hero, having heard that unpleasant words.)
The hero, having heard those unpleasant words, mentally censured Sātyaki, Baladeva, and Pradyumna, the great chariot-warrior. (3-22-16)
अहं हि द्वारकायाश्च पितुश्च कुरुनन्दन। तेषु रक्षां समाधाय प्रयातः सौभपातने ॥३-२२-१७॥
ahaṃ hi dvārakāyāś ca pituś ca kurunandana। teṣu rakṣāṃ samādhāya prayātaḥ saubhapātane ॥3-22-17॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; द्वारकायाः (dvārakāyāḥ) - of Dvārakā; च (ca) - and; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (my) father; च (ca) - and; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - protection; समाधाय (samādhāya) - having established; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; सौभपातने (saubhapātane) - for the destruction of Saubha;]
(I indeed of Dvārakā and of (my) father and O delight of the Kurus, among them protection having established, departed for the destruction of Saubha.)
O delight of the Kurus, I, having established protection among the people of Dvārakā and my father, departed for the destruction of Saubha. (3-22-17)
बलदेवो महाबाहुः कच्चिज्जीवति शत्रुहा। सात्यकी रौक्मिणेयश्च चारुदेष्णश्च वीर्यवान् ॥ साम्बप्रभृतयश्चैवेत्यहमासं सुदुर्मनाः ॥३-२२-१८॥
baladevo mahābāhuḥ kaccijjīvati śatruhā। sātyakī raukmiṇeyaś ca cārudeṣṇaś ca vīryavān ॥ sāmbaprabhṛtayaś caivetya ham āsaṃ sudurmanāḥ ॥3-22-18॥
[बलदेवः (baladevaḥ) - Bala (strength) + deva (god); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; शत्रुहा (śatruhā) - destroyer of enemies; सात्यकी (sātyakī) - Sātyakī; रौक्मिणेयः (raukmiṇeyaḥ) - son of Rukmiṇī; च (ca) - and; चारुदेष्णः (cārudeṣṇaḥ) - Cārudeṣṇa; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; साम्बप्रभृतयः (sāmbaprabhṛtayaḥ) - Sāmba and others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; आसं (āsaṃ) - was; सुदुर्मनाः (sudurmanāḥ) - very troubled in mind;]
(Bala-deva, mighty-armed, whether lives, destroyer of enemies; Sātyakī, son of Rukmiṇī, and Cārudeṣṇa and powerful; Sāmba and others and indeed thus I was very troubled in mind.)
I wondered anxiously whether Baladeva, the mighty-armed destroyer of enemies, Sātyakī, Rukmiṇeya, Cārudeṣṇa, the powerful one, Sāmba and the others were still alive; thus I was very troubled in mind. (3-22-18)
एतेषु हि नरव्याघ्र जीवत्सु न कथञ्चन। शक्यः शूरसुतो हन्तुमपि वज्रभृता स्वयम् ॥३-२२-१९॥
eteṣu hi naravyāghra jīvatsu na kathañcana। śakyaḥ śūrasuto hantum api vajrabhṛtā svayam ॥3-22-19॥
[एतेषु (eteṣu) - in these; हि (hi) - indeed; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; जीवत्सु (jīvatsu) - while living; न (na) - not; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; शूरसुतः (śūrasutaḥ) - son of a hero; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; अपि (api) - even; वज्रभृता (vajrabhṛtā) - by the wielder of the thunderbolt; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(In these indeed, O tiger among men, while living, not in any way is it possible for the son of a hero to be killed even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself.)
O tiger among men, as long as these are alive, it is not possible for the son of a hero to be killed, even by the wielder of the thunderbolt himself. (3-22-19)
हतः शूरसुतो व्यक्तं व्यक्तं ते च परासवः। बलदेवमुखाः सर्वे इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥३-२२-२०॥
hataḥ śūrasuto vyaktaṃ vyaktaṃ te ca parāsavaḥ। baladevamukhāḥ sarve iti me niścitā matiḥ॥3-22-20॥
[हतः (hataḥ) - killed; शूरसुतः (śūrasutaḥ) - son of Śūra; व्यक्तं (vyaktaṃ) - clearly; व्यक्तं (vyaktaṃ) - clearly; ते (te) - your; च (ca) - and; परासवः (parāsavaḥ) - other offspring; बलदेवमुखाः (baladevamukhāḥ) - headed by Baladeva; सर्वे (sarve) - all; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - ascertained; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]

सोऽहं सर्वविनाशं तं चिन्तयानो मुहुर्मुहुः। सुविह्वलो महाराज पुनः शाल्वमयोधयम् ॥३-२२-२१॥
so'haṃ sarvavināśaṃ taṃ cintayāno muhurmuhuḥ। suvihvalo mahārāja punaḥ śālvamayodhayam ॥3-22-21॥

ततोऽपश्यं महाराज प्रपतन्तमहं तदा। सौभाच्छूरसुतं वीर ततो मां मोह आविशत् ॥३-२२-२२॥
tato'paśyaṃ mahārāja prapatantam ahaṃ tadā। saubhāc chūrasutaṃ vīra tato māṃ moha āviśat ॥3-22-22॥

Then, O great king, I saw myself falling at that time. O hero, from Saubha, the son of Śūra, then delusion overtook me. (3-22-22)
तस्य रूपं प्रपततः पितुर्मम नराधिप। ययातेः क्षीणपुण्यस्य स्वर्गादिव महीतलम् ॥३-२२-२३॥
tasya rūpaṃ prapatataḥ pitur mama narādhipa। yayāteḥ kṣīṇapuṇyasya svargādiva mahītalam ॥3-22-23॥

(With torn and fallen turban, with disheveled garment and hair, falling, is seen indeed formerly, like a planet whose merit is diminished.)
He is seen with his turban torn and fallen, his garments and hair disheveled, falling down, just like a planet whose merit has waned. (3-22-24)
ततः शार्ङ्गं धनुःश्रेष्ठं करात्प्रपतितं मम। मोहात्सन्नश्च कौन्तेय रथोपस्थ उपाविशम् ॥३-२२-२५॥
tataḥ śārṅgaṃ dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ karātprapatitaṃ mama। mohātsannaśca kaunteya rathopastha upāviśam ॥3-22-25॥

(Then Śārṅga, the best of bows, fell from my hand; from delusion, enfeebled and O son of Kuntī, I sat down on the chariot seat.)

ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं सैन्यं मे गतचेतनम्। मां दृष्ट्वा रथनीडस्थं गतासुमिव भारत ॥३-२२-२६॥
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ sainyaṃ me gatacetanam। māṃ dṛṣṭvā rathanīḍasthaṃ gatāsumiva bhārata ॥3-22-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हाहाकृतम् (hāhākṛtam) - made a cry of distress; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; मे (me) - my; गतचेतनम् (gatacetanam) - devoid of consciousness; माम् (mām) - me; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रथनीडस्थम् (rathanīḍastham) - situated in the chariot's seat; गतासुम् (gatāsum) - with life departed; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then, all my army, having lost consciousness, made a cry of distress, having seen me, situated in the chariot's seat, as if with life departed, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, seeing me seated in the chariot as if lifeless, all my army, having lost consciousness, cried out in distress. (3-22-26)
प्रसार्य बाहू पततः प्रसार्य चरणावपि। रूपं पितुरपश्यं तच्छकुनेः पततो यथा ॥३-२२-२७॥
prasārya bāhū patataḥ prasārya caraṇāv api। rūpaṃ pitur apaśyaṃ tac chakuneḥ patato yathā ॥3-22-27॥

तं पतन्तं महाबाहो शूलपट्टिशपाणयः। अभिघ्नन्तो भृशं वीरा मम चेतो व्यकम्पयन् ॥३-२२-२८॥
taṃ patantaṃ mahābāho śūlapaṭṭiśapāṇayaḥ। abhighnanto bhṛśaṃ vīrā mama ceto vyakampayan ॥3-22-28॥

(Him falling, O mighty-armed, with spears and pattiśas in hand, striking violently, the heroes shook my mind.)

ततो मुहूर्तात्प्रतिलभ्य सञ्ज्ञा; महं तदा वीर महाविमर्दे। न तत्र सौभं न रिपुं न शाल्वं; पश्यामि वृद्धं पितरं न चापि ॥३-२२-२९॥
tato muhūrtātpratilabhya sañjñā; mahaṃ tadā vīra mahāvimarde. na tatra saubhaṃ na ripuṃ na śālvam; paśyāmi vṛddhaṃ pitaraṃ na cāpi ॥3-22-29॥

ततो ममासीन्मनसि मायेयमिति निश्चितम्। प्रबुद्धोऽस्मि ततो भूयः शतशो विकिरञ्शरान् ॥३-२२-३०॥
tato mamāsīn manasi māyeyam iti niścitam। prabuddho'smi tato bhūyaḥ śataśo vikirañ śarān ॥3-22-30॥

(Then in my mind there was (the thought) "this is illusion" thus ascertained; awakened I am, then again by hundreds scattering arrows.)
