ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रगृह्य रुचिरं धनुः। शरैरपातयं सौभाच्छिरांसि विबुधद्विषाम् ॥३-२३-१॥
tato'haṃ bharataśreṣṭha pragṛhya ruciraṃ dhanuḥ। śarairapātayaṃ saubhācchiraāṃsi vibudhādviṣām ॥3-23-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; रुचिरम् (ruciram) - beautiful; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; अपातयम् (apātayam) - I caused to fall; सौभात् (saubhāt) - from Saubha; शिरांसि (śirāṃsi) - heads; विबुधद्विषाम् (vibudhādviṣām) - of the enemies of the gods;]
(Then I, O best of the Bharatas, having taken up the beautiful bow, with arrows caused to fall from Saubha the heads of the enemies of the gods.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, I took up my beautiful bow and with arrows struck down from Saubha the heads of the enemies of the gods. (3-23-1)
शरांश्चाशीविषाकारानूर्ध्वगांस्तिग्मतेजसः। अप्रैषं शाल्वराजाय शार्ङ्गमुक्तान्सुवाससः ॥३-२३-२॥
śarāṁś cāśīviṣākārān ūrdhvagāṁs tigmatejasaḥ। apraiṣaṁ śālvarājāya śārṅgamuktān suvāsasaḥ ॥3-23-2॥
[शरान् (śarān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; आशीविषाकारान् (āśīviṣākārān) - having the form of serpents; ऊर्ध्वगान् (ūrdhvagān) - rising upwards; तिग्मतेजसः (tigmatejasaḥ) - of sharp brilliance; अप्रैषम् (apraiṣam) - I sent; शाल्वराजाय (śālvarājāya) - to the king of Śālva; शार्ङ्गमुक्तान् (śārṅgamuktān) - released from the Śārṅga bow; सुवाससः (suvāsasaḥ) - well-adorned;]
(Arrows and having the form of serpents, rising upwards, of sharp brilliance, I sent to the king of Śālva, released from the Śārṅga bow, well-adorned.)
I sent well-adorned arrows, having the form of serpents, rising upwards with sharp brilliance, released from the Śārṅga bow, to the king of Śālva. (3-23-2)
ततो नादृश्यत तदा सौभं कुरुकुलोद्वह। अन्तर्हितं माययाभूत्ततोऽहं विस्मितोऽभवम् ॥३-२३-३॥
tato nādṛśyata tadā saubhaṃ kurukulodvaha। antarhitaṃ māyayābhūt tato'haṃ vismito'bhavam ॥3-23-3॥

(Then not was seen then Saubha O best of the Kuru lineage; disappeared by illusion became; then I astonished became.)
Then, O best of the Kuru lineage, the Saubha was not seen at that time; it disappeared by illusion. Then I became astonished. (3-23-3)
अथ दानवसङ्घास्ते विकृताननमूर्धजाः। उदक्रोशन्महाराज विष्ठिते मयि भारत ॥३-२३-४॥
atha dānavasaṅghās te vikṛtānanamūrdhajāḥ। udakrośan mahārāja viṣṭhite mayi bhārata ॥3-23-4॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दानवसङ्घाः (dānavasaṅghāḥ) - assemblies of Dānavas; ते (te) - they; विकृताननमूर्धजाः (vikṛtānanamūrdhajāḥ) - with distorted faces and hair; उदक्रोशन् (udakrośan) - cried out loudly; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; विष्ठिते (viṣṭhite) - when stationed; मयि (mayi) - I; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then the assemblies of Dānavas, they, with distorted faces and hair, cried out loudly, O great king, when I was stationed, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, when I was stationed, the groups of Dānavas with distorted faces and hair cried out loudly, O great king. (3-23-4)
ततोऽस्त्रं शब्दसाहं वै त्वरमाणो महाहवे। अयोजयं तद्वधाय ततः शब्द उपारमत् ॥३-२३-५॥
tato'straṃ śabdasāhaṃ vai tvaramāṇo mahāhave। ayojayaṃ tadvadhāya tataḥ śabda upāramat ॥3-23-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; शब्दसाहं (śabdasāham) - sound-powered; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; अयोजयम् (ayojayam) - I discharged; तद्वधाय (tadvadhāya) - for the destruction of that; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; उपारमत् (upāramat) - ceased;]
(Then, the missile powered by sound, indeed, hastening in the great battle, I discharged for the destruction of that; then the sound ceased.)
Then, in the great battle, I quickly discharged the missile powered by sound for its destruction; then the sound ceased. (3-23-5)
हतास्ते दानवाः सर्वे यैः स शब्द उदीरितः। शरैरादित्यसङ्काशैर्ज्वलितैः शब्दसाधनैः ॥३-२३-६॥
hatās te dānavāḥ sarve yaiḥ sa śabda udīritaḥ। śarair āditya-saṅkāśair jvalitaiḥ śabda-sādhanaiḥ ॥3-23-6॥
[हताः (hatāḥ) - slain; destroyed; ते (te) - those; they; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; demons; सर्वे (sarve) - all; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; स (sa) - that; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; उदीरितः (udīritaḥ) - uttered; produced; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; आदित्यसङ्काशैः (āditya-saṅkāśaiḥ) - sun-like; resembling the sun; ज्वलितैः (jvalitaiḥ) - blazing; burning; शब्दसाधनैः (śabda-sādhanaiḥ) - sound-producing; making sound;]
(Slain those Dānavas all by whom that sound was uttered; by arrows sun-like blazing sound-producing;)
All those Dānavas were slain by whom that sound was uttered, by blazing, sun-like, sound-producing arrows. (3-23-6)
तस्मिन्नुपरते शब्दे पुनरेवान्यतोऽभवत्। शब्दोऽपरो महाराज तत्रापि प्राहरं शरान् ॥३-२३-७॥
tasminn uparate śabde punar evānyato 'bhavat। śabdo 'paro mahārāja tatrāpi prāharaṃ śarān॥3-23-7॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; (locative singular of tat) उपरते (uparate) - ceased; (past participle of upa-√ram) शब्दे (śabde) - sound; (locative singular of śabda) पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्यतः (anyataḥ) - from elsewhere; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; (3rd person singular past of √bhū) शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; अपरो (aparaḥ) - another; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; प्राहरम् (prāharam) - struck; (1st person singular past of pra-√hṛ, but here as noun: striking) शरान् (śarān) - arrows; (accusative plural of śara);]
(In that ceased sound, again indeed from elsewhere arose; sound another O great king, there also striking arrows.)
O great king, when that sound had ceased, again another sound arose from elsewhere; there too, another struck arrows. (3-23-7)
एवं दश दिशः सर्वास्तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च भारत। नादयामासुरसुरास्ते चापि निहता मया ॥३-२३-८॥
evaṃ daśa diśaḥ sarvāstiryagūrdhvaṃ ca bhārata। nādayāmāsurasurāste cāpi nihatā mayā ॥3-23-8॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; दश (daśa) - ten; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - across; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - upwards; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; नादयामासुḥ (nādayāmāsuḥ) - caused to resound; असुराः (asurāḥ) - asuras; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निहता (nihata) - slain; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus, the ten directions, all, across and upwards, O Bhārata, the asuras, they, caused to resound, and also, slain by me.)
Thus, O Bhārata, the asuras, having been slain by me, caused all the ten directions, across and upwards, to resound. (3-23-8)
ततः प्राग्ज्योतिषं गत्वा पुनरेव व्यदृश्यत। सौभं कामगमं वीर मोहयन्मम चक्षुषी ॥३-२३-९॥
tataḥ prāgjyotiṣaṃ gatvā punareva vyadṛśyata। saubhaṃ kāmagamaṃ vīra mohayanmama cakṣuṣī ॥3-23-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राग्ज्योतिषं (prāgjyotiṣam) - Prāgjyotiṣa (name of a place); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen; सौभं (saubham) - Saubha (name of a flying city); कामगमं (kāmagamam) - moving at will; वीर (vīra) - O hero; मोहयन् (mohayan) - bewildering; मम (mama) - my; चक्षुषी (cakṣuṣī) - eyes;]
(Then, having gone to Prāgjyotiṣa, again indeed it was seen. The Saubha, moving at will, O hero, bewildering my eyes.)
Then, after going to Prāgjyotiṣa, the Saubha, which could move at will, was again seen, O hero, bewildering my eyes. (3-23-9)
ततो लोकान्तकरणो दानवो वानराकृतिः। शिलावर्षेण सहसा महता मां समावृणोत् ॥३-२३-१०॥
tato lokāntakaraṇo dānavo vānarākṛtiḥ। śilāvarṣeṇa sahasā mahatā māṃ samāvṛṇot ॥3-23-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; लोकान्तकरणः (lokāntakaraṇaḥ) - destroyer of worlds; दानवः (dānavaḥ) - demon; वानराकृतिः (vānarākṛtiḥ) - having the form of a monkey; शिलावर्षेण (śilāvarṣeṇa) - with a shower of stones; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; महत् (mahatā) - great; माम् (mām) - me; समावृणोत् (samāvṛṇot) - covered;]
(Then the destroyer of worlds, the demon having the form of a monkey, with a great shower of stones, suddenly covered me.)
Then, the demon who was the destroyer of worlds and had the form of a monkey, suddenly covered me with a great shower of stones. (3-23-10)
सोऽहं पर्वतवर्षेण वध्यमानः समन्ततः। वल्मीक इव राजेन्द्र पर्वतोपचितोऽभवम् ॥३-२३-११॥
so'haṃ parvatavarṣeṇa vadhyamānaḥ samantataḥ। valmīka iva rājeṃdra parvatopacito'bhavam ॥3-23-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; पर्वतवर्षेण (parvatavarṣeṇa) - by a shower of mountains; वध्यमानः (vadhyamānaḥ) - being struck; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; वल्मीक (valmīka) - an anthill; इव (iva) - like; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; पर्वत (parvata) - mountain; उपचितः (upacitaḥ) - heaped up; अभवम् (abhavam) - I became;]
(He I by a shower of mountains being struck on all sides. An anthill like O king mountain heaped up I became.)
O king, being struck on all sides by a shower of mountains, I became heaped up like an anthill of mountains. (3-23-11)
ततोऽहं पर्वतचितः सहयः सहसारथिः। अप्रख्यातिमियां राजन्सध्वजः पर्वतैश्चितः ॥३-२३-१२॥
tato'haṃ parvatacitaḥ sahayaḥ sahasārathiḥ। aprakhyātimiyāṃ rājansadhvajaḥ parvataiścitaḥ ॥3-23-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; अहम् (aham) - I; पर्वतचितः (parvatacitaḥ) - heaped with mountains; सहयः (sahayaḥ) - with horses; सहसारथिः (sahasārathiḥ) - with charioteer; अप्रख्यातिमियां (aprakhyātimiyāṃ) - not attaining fame; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सध्वजः (sadhvajaḥ) - with banner; पर्वतैः (parvataiḥ) - with mountains; चितः (citaḥ) - heaped;]
(Then I, heaped with mountains, with horses, with charioteer, not attaining fame, O king, with banner, heaped with mountains.)
Then, O king, I, along with my horses, charioteer, and banner, was heaped with mountains and did not attain fame. (3-23-12)
ततो वृष्णिप्रवीरा ये ममासन्सैनिकास्तदा। ते भयार्ता दिशः सर्वाः सहसा विप्रदुद्रुवुः ॥३-२३-१३॥
tato vṛṣṇipravīrā ye mamāsansainikāstadā। te bhayārtā diśaḥ sarvāḥ sahasā vipradudruvuḥ ॥3-23-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वृष्णि-प्रवीराः (vṛṣṇi-pravīrāḥ) - Vṛṣṇi heroes; ये (ye) - who; मम (mama) - my; आसन् (āsan) - were; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; तदा (tadā) - then; ते (te) - they; भय-आर्ताः (bhaya-ārtāḥ) - afflicted by fear; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; विप्रदुद्रुवुः (vipradudruvuḥ) - ran away in different directions;]
(Then the Vṛṣṇi heroes who were my soldiers at that time, they, afflicted by fear, suddenly ran away in all directions.)
Then, the Vṛṣṇi heroes who were my soldiers at that time, being overcome by fear, suddenly fled in all directions. (3-23-13)
ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वमभूत्किल विशां पते। द्यौश्च भूमिश्च खं चैवादृश्यमाने तथा मयि ॥३-२३-१४॥
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvam abhūt kila viśāṃ pate। dyauś ca bhūmiś ca khaṃ caivādṛśyamāne tathā mayi ॥3-23-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; हाहाकृतम् (hāhākṛtam) - cries of distress made; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; arose; किल (kila) - indeed; surely; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; of people; पते (pate) - O lord; O ruler; द्यौः (dyauḥ) - sky; heaven; च (ca) - and; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; च (ca) - and; खम् (kham) - space; ether; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; just; अदृश्यमाने (adṛśyamāne) - when (I) was not seen; being invisible; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; मयि (mayi) - in me;]
(Then cries of distress were made everywhere, indeed, O lord of men; the sky and the earth and space also, when I was not seen, thus, in me.)
Then, O lord of men, cries of distress arose everywhere; the sky, the earth, and space also seemed thus when I was not visible. (3-23-14)
ततो विषण्णमनसो मम राजन्सुहृज्जनाः। रुरुदुश्चुक्रुशुश्चैव दुःखशोकसमन्विताः ॥३-२३-१५॥
tato viṣaṇṇamanaso mama rājan suhṛjjanāḥ। ruruduś cukruśuś caiva duḥkhaśokasamanvitāḥ ॥3-23-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; विषण्णमनसः (viṣaṇṇamanasaḥ) - with dejected minds; मम (mama) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुहृज्जनाः (suhṛjjanāḥ) - friends; well-wishers; रुरुदुः (ruruduḥ) - cried; wept; चुक्रुशुः (cukruśuḥ) - wailed; screamed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुःखशोकसमन्विताः (duḥkhaśokasamanvitāḥ) - afflicted with pain and grief;]
(Then, with dejected minds, my O king, friends cried, wailed and indeed, afflicted with pain and grief.)
Then, O king, my friends, afflicted with pain and grief, cried and wailed with dejected minds. (3-23-15)
द्विषतां च प्रहर्षोऽभूदार्तिश्चाद्विषतामपि। एवं विजितवान्वीर पश्चादश्रौषमच्युत ॥३-२३-१६॥
dviṣatāṃ ca praharṣo'bhūd ārtiś cādviṣatām api। evaṃ vijitavān vīra paścād aśrauṣam acyuta ॥3-23-16॥
[द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; च (ca) - and; प्रहर्षः (praharṣaḥ) - great joy; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; आर्तिः (ārtiḥ) - distress; च (ca) - and; अद्विषताम् (adviṣatām) - of the non-enemies; अपि (api) - also; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विजितवान् (vijitavān) - having conquered; वीर (vīra) - O hero; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - I heard; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta;]
(Of the enemies and great joy arose, and distress also of the non-enemies; thus, having conquered, O hero, afterwards I heard, O Acyuta.)
Both the enemies felt great joy, and even the non-enemies experienced distress; thus, O hero, after the victory, I heard this, O Acyuta. (3-23-16)
ततोऽहमस्त्रं दयितं सर्वपाषाणभेदनम्। वज्रमुद्यम्य तान्सर्वान्पर्वतान्समशातयम् ॥३-२३-१७॥
tato'ham astraṃ dayitaṃ sarvapāṣāṇabhedanam। vajram udyamya tān sarvān parvatān samaśātayam ॥3-23-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; दयितं (dayitaṃ) - beloved; सर्वपाषाणभेदनम् (sarvapāṣāṇabhedanam) - breaking all stones; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; तान् (tān) - those; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; समशातयम् (samaśātayam) - I shattered;]
(Then I, the beloved weapon breaking all stones, having raised the thunderbolt, shattered all those mountains.)
Then, having raised my beloved weapon that breaks all stones—the thunderbolt—I shattered all those mountains. (3-23-17)
ततः पर्वतभारार्ता मन्दप्राणविचेष्टिताः। हया मम महाराज वेपमाना इवाभवन् ॥३-२३-१८॥
tataḥ parvatabhārārtā mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitāḥ। hayā mama mahārāja vepamānā ivābhavan ॥3-23-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; पर्वत (parvata) - mountain; भार (bhāra) - weight; burden; आर्ता (ārtā) - afflicted; distressed; मन्द (manda) - slow; weak; प्राण (prāṇa) - breath; life; विचेष्टिताः (viceṣṭitāḥ) - moving; acting; हया (hayā) - horses; मम (mama) - my; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वेपमाना (vepamānā) - trembling; shaking; इव (iva) - as if; like; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; were;]
(Then, afflicted by the weight of the mountain, moving with slow breath, my horses, O great king, became as if trembling.)
Then, O great king, my horses, afflicted by the weight of the mountain and moving with slow breath, appeared as if they were trembling. (3-23-18)
मेघजालमिवाकाशे विदार्याभ्युदितं रविम्। दृष्ट्वा मां बान्धवाः सर्वे हर्षमाहारयन्पुनः ॥३-२३-१९॥
meghajālam ivākāśe vidāryābhyuditaṃ ravim। dṛṣṭvā māṃ bāndhavāḥ sarve harṣam āhārayan punaḥ ॥3-23-19॥
[मेघजालम् (meghajālam) - cloud-mass; इव (iva) - like; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; विदार्य (vidārya) - having torn apart; अभ्युदितम् (abhyuditam) - risen; रविम् (ravim) - the sun; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; माम् (mām) - me; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; आहारयन् (āhārayan) - brought forth; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Like a mass of clouds in the sky having been torn apart, the risen sun; having seen me, all the relatives again brought forth joy.)
Just as the sun rises after tearing apart a mass of clouds in the sky, seeing me, all my relatives once again became joyful. (3-23-19)
ततो मामब्रवीत्सूतः प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतो नृप। साधु सम्पश्य वार्ष्णेय शाल्वं सौभपतिं स्थितम् ॥३-२३-२०॥
tato mām abravīt sūtaḥ prāñjaliḥ praṇato nṛpa। sādhu sampaśya vārṣṇeya śālvaṃ saubhapatiṃ sthitam ॥3-23-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; साधु (sādhu) - well; सम्पश्य (sampaśya) - behold; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; शाल्वम् (śālvam) - Śālva; सौभपतिं (saubhapatiṃ) - the lord of Saubha; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing;]
(Then me said the charioteer with joined palms, bowed, O king: Well, behold, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, Śālva, the lord of Saubha, standing.)
Then the charioteer, with joined palms and bowed, said to me, O king: "Well, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, behold Śālva, the lord of Saubha, standing there." (3-23-20)
अलं कृष्णावमन्यैनं साधु यत्नं समाचर। मार्दवं सखितां चैव शाल्वादद्य व्यपाहर ॥३-२३-२१॥
alaṃ kṛṣṇāvamanya enaṃ sādhu yatnaṃ samācara। mārdavaṃ sakhitāṃ caiva śālvād adya vyapāhara ॥3-23-21॥
[अलम् (alam) - enough; sufficient; stop; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; अवमन्‍य (avamanya) - disregarding; despising; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; साधु (sādhu) - properly; rightly; well; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; attempt; समाचर (samācara) - perform; do; मार्दवम् (mārdavam) - gentleness; softness; सखिताम् (sakhitām) - friendship; companionship; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; शाल्वात् (śālvāt) - from Śālva; अद्य (adya) - today; व्यपाहर (vyapāhara) - remove; take away;]
(Enough, Kṛṣṇa, disregarding him; properly make effort. Gentleness and friendship indeed from Śālva today remove.)
Stop, Kṛṣṇa, do not disregard him; act properly and make an effort. Remove gentleness and friendship towards Śālva today. (3-23-21)
जहि शाल्वं महाबाहो मैनं जीवय केशव। सर्वैः पराक्रमैर्वीर वध्यः शत्रुरमित्रहन् ॥३-२३-२२॥
jahi śālvaṃ mahābāho mainaṃ jīvaya keśava। sarvaiḥ parākramair vīra vadhyaḥ śatrur amitrahan ॥3-23-22॥

(Destroy Śālva, O mighty-armed, do not let him live, Keśava. By all powers, O hero, the enemy who is to be slain, O destroyer of foes.)
O mighty-armed Keśava, destroy Śālva; do not let him live. Use all your powers, O hero, for the enemy must be slain, O destroyer of foes. (3-23-22)
न शत्रुरवमन्तव्यो दुर्बलोऽपि बलीयसा। योऽपि स्यात्पीठगः कश्चित्किं पुनः समरे स्थितः ॥३-२३-२३॥
na śatruravamantavyo durbalo'pi balīyasā। yo'pi syāt pīṭhagaḥ kaścit kiṃ punaḥ samare sthitaḥ ॥3-23-23॥
[न (na) - not; शत्रुः (śatruḥ) - enemy; अवमन्तव्यः (avamantavyaḥ) - should be despised; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - weak; अपि (api) - even; बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by the stronger; यः (yaḥ) - who; अपि (api) - even; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; पीठगः (pīṭhagaḥ) - one who is at the rear; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; किं (kiṃ) - what (to say of); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; moreover; समरे (samare) - in battle; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Not enemy should be despised weak even by the stronger; who even may be at the rear someone, what again in battle standing.)
An enemy, even if weak, should not be despised by the stronger; if even someone at the rear is not to be disregarded, then how much more so one who stands firm in battle. (3-23-23)
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल सर्वयत्नैरिमं प्रभो। जहि वृष्णिकुलश्रेष्ठ मा त्वां कालोऽत्यगात्पुनः ॥३-२३-२४॥
sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla sarvayatnair imaṃ prabho। jahi vṛṣṇikulāśreṣṭha mā tvāṃ kālo 'tyagāt punaḥ ॥3-23-24॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुरुषशार्दूल (puruṣaśārdūla) - tiger among men; सर्वयत्नैः (sarvayatnaiḥ) - with all efforts; इमं (imaṃ) - this; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; जहि (jahi) - destroy; वृष्णिकुलश्रेष्ठ (vṛṣṇikulāśreṣṭha) - best of the Vṛṣṇi clan; मा (mā) - do not; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - should pass by; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He you tiger among men with all efforts this O lord destroy best of the Vṛṣṇi clan do not you time should pass by again.)
Therefore, you, O tiger among men, with all your efforts, O lord, destroy this (enemy), O best of the Vṛṣṇi clan. Do not let time pass you by again. (3-23-24)
नैष मार्दवसाध्यो वै मतो नापि सखा तव। येन त्वं योधितो वीर द्वारका चावमर्दिता ॥३-२३-२५॥
naiṣa mārdavasādhyo vai mato nāpi sakhā tava। yena tvaṃ yodhito vīra dvārakā cāvamarditā ॥3-23-25॥
[नैष (naiṣa) - not this; मार्दवसाध्यः (mārdavasādhyaḥ) - attainable by gentleness; वै (vai) - indeed; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; सखा (sakhā) - friend; तव (tava) - your; येन (yena) - by whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; योधितः (yodhitaḥ) - fought; वीर (vīra) - hero; द्वारका (dvārakā) - Dvaraka; च (ca) - and; अवमर्दिता (avamarditā) - oppressed;]
(Not this attainable by gentleness indeed considered, not also friend your, by whom you fought, hero, Dvaraka and oppressed.)
This is not considered attainable by gentleness, nor is he your friend, by whom you, O hero, were fought against and Dvaraka was oppressed. (3-23-25)
एवमादि तु कौन्तेय श्रुत्वाहं सारथेर्वचः। तत्त्वमेतदिति ज्ञात्वा युद्धे मतिमधारयम् ॥३-२३-२६॥
evamādi tu kaunteya śrutvāhaṃ sāratheḥ vacaḥ। tattvam etad iti jñātvā yuddhe matim adhārayam ॥3-23-26॥
[एवमादि (evamādi) - thus-beginning; (beginning with thus;) तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अहम् (aham) - I; सारथेः (sāratheḥ) - of the charioteer; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - the truth; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; मतिम् (matim) - mind; अधारयम् (adhārayam) - I fixed;]
(Thus-beginning but O son of Kunti, having heard I of the charioteer's words, the truth this thus having known, in battle mind I fixed.)
O son of Kunti, having heard these words of the charioteer beginning thus, and having known this to be the truth, I fixed my mind in the battle. (3-23-26)
वधाय शाल्वराजस्य सौभस्य च निपातने। दारुकं चाब्रुवं वीर मुहूर्तं स्थीयतामिति ॥३-२३-२७॥
vadhāya śālvarājasya saubhasya ca nipātane। dārukaṃ cābruvaṃ vīra muhūrtaṃ sthīyatāmiti ॥3-23-27॥
[वधाय (vadhāya) - for the killing; शाल्वराजस्य (śālvarājasya) - of the king of Śālva; सौभस्य (saubhasya) - of Saubha (the aerial city); च (ca) - and; निपातने (nipātane) - for the destruction; दारुकं (dārukaṃ) - to Dāruka; च (ca) - and; अब्रुवं (abruvaṃ) - I said; वीर (vīra) - O hero; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtam) - for a moment; स्थीयताम् (sthīyatām) - let it be stopped; इति (iti) - thus;]
(For the killing of the king of Śālva and for the destruction of Saubha, I said to Dāruka, "O hero, let it be stopped for a moment," thus.)
For the destruction of the king of Śālva and the Saubha, I told Dāruka, "O hero, halt for a moment." (3-23-27)
ततोऽप्रतिहतं दिव्यमभेद्यमतिवीर्यवत्। आग्नेयमस्त्रं दयितं सर्वसाहं महाप्रभम् ॥३-२३-२८॥
tato'pratihataṃ divyam abhedyam ativīryavat। āgneyam astraṃ dayitaṃ sarvasāhaṃ mahāprabham ॥3-23-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अप्रतिहतम् (apratihatam) - unobstructed; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अभेद्यम् (abhedyam) - impenetrable; अतिवीर्यवत् (ativīryavat) - of great power; आग्नेयम् (āgneyam) - of Agni (fire); अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; दयितम् (dayitam) - beloved; सर्वसाहम् (sarvasāham) - all-conquering; महाप्रभम् (mahāprabham) - greatly radiant;]
(Then the unobstructed, divine, impenetrable, greatly powerful, of Agni (fire) missile, beloved, all-conquering, greatly radiant.)
Then he took up the unobstructed, divine, impenetrable, supremely powerful Agneya missile, his beloved weapon, all-conquering and greatly radiant. (3-23-28)
यक्षाणां राक्षसानां च दानवानां च संयुगे। राज्ञां च प्रतिलोमानां भस्मान्तकरणं महत् ॥३-२३-२९॥
yakṣāṇāṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca dānavānāṃ ca saṃyuge। rājñāṃ ca pratilomānāṃ bhasmāntakaraṇaṃ mahat ॥3-23-29॥
[यक्षाणां (yakṣāṇām) - of the Yakṣas; राक्षसानां (rākṣasānām) - of the Rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; दानवानां (dānavānām) - of the Dānavas; च (ca) - and; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; राज्ञां (rājñām) - of the kings; च (ca) - and; प्रतिलोमानां (pratilomānām) - of the adversaries; भस्मान्तकरणं (bhasmāntakaraṇam) - making (them) end in ashes; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Of the Yakṣas, of the Rākṣasas and of the Dānavas and in battle; of the kings and of the adversaries, great making (them) end in ashes;)
In battle, it was a great destruction, reducing to ashes the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Dānavas, and the adversarial kings. (3-23-29)
क्षुरान्तममलं चक्रं कालान्तकयमोपमम्। अभिमन्त्र्याहमतुलं द्विषतां च निबर्हणम् ॥३-२३-३०॥
kṣurāntamamalaṃ cakraṃ kālāntakayamopamam। abhimantryāhamatulaṃ dviṣatāṃ ca nibarhaṇam ॥3-23-30॥
[क्षुरान्तम् (kṣurāntam) - having a razor edge; अमलं (amalam) - spotless; चक्रं (cakram) - disc; कालान्तकयम (kālāntakayam) - like Yama, the ender of time; उपमम् (upamam) - comparable; अभिमन्त्र्य (abhimantrya) - having consecrated with mantras; अहम् (aham) - I; अतुलं (atulaṃ) - incomparable; द्विषतां (dviṣatām) - of enemies; च (ca) - and; निबर्हणम् (nibarhaṇam) - destroyer;]
(Having consecrated the spotless disc with a razor edge, comparable to Yama, the ender of time, I (took) the incomparable destroyer of enemies.)
I consecrated the spotless, razor-edged disc, comparable to Yama, the ender of time, and took up the incomparable weapon that destroys enemies. (3-23-30)
जहि सौभं स्ववीर्येण ये चात्र रिपवो मम। इत्युक्त्वा भुजवीर्येण तस्मै प्राहिणवं रुषा ॥३-२३-३१॥
jahi saubhaṃ svavīryeṇa ye cātra ripavo mama। ity uktvā bhujavīryeṇa tasmai prāhiṇavaṃ ruṣā ॥3-23-31॥
[जहि (jahi) - destroy; सौभं (saubham) - Saubha (the aerial city); स्ववीर्येण (svavīryeṇa) - by own strength; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; रिपवः (ripavaḥ) - enemies; मम (mama) - my; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; भुजवीर्येण (bhujavīryeṇa) - by the strength of the arm; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्राहिणवम् (prāhiṇavam) - I sent; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger;]
(Destroy Saubha by your own strength, and those here who are my enemies. Thus having said, by the strength of my arm, to him I sent with anger.)
Destroy Saubha with your own strength, as well as those here who are my enemies. Having said this, I sent him forth with anger, using the strength of my arm. (3-23-31)
रूपं सुदर्शनस्यासीदाकाशे पततस्तदा। द्वितीयस्येव सूर्यस्य युगान्ते परिविष्यतः ॥३-२३-३२॥
rūpaṃ sudarśanasyāsīd ākāśe patatas tadā। dvitīyasyeva sūryasya yugānte pariviṣyataḥ ॥3-23-32॥
[रूपं (rūpam) - form; सुदर्शनस्य (sudarśanasya) - of Sudarśana; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; आकाशे (ākāśe) - in the sky; पततस् (patatas) - falling; तदा (tadā) - then; द्वितीयस्य (dvitīyasya) - of the second; इव (iva) - like; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of an age; परिविष्यतः (pariviṣyataḥ) - blazing all around;]
(The form of Sudarśana was then in the sky as it was falling, like that of a second sun blazing all around at the end of an age.)
At that time, as Sudarśana fell through the sky, its form appeared like a second sun blazing all around at the end of an age. (3-23-32)
तत्समासाद्य नगरं सौभं व्यपगतत्विषम्। मध्येन पाटयामास क्रकचो दार्विवोच्छ्रितम् ॥३-२३-३३॥
tatsamāsādya nagaraṃ saubhaṃ vyapagatatviṣam। madhyena pāṭayāmāsa krakaco dārvivocchritam ॥3-23-33॥
[तत् (tat) - that; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; सौभम् (saubham) - Saubha (the flying city); व्यपगतत्विषम् (vyapagatatviṣam) - deprived of brilliance; मध्येन (madhyena) - in the middle; पाटयामास (pāṭayāmāsa) - split; क्रकचः (krakacaḥ) - saw; दारु (dāru) - wood; इव (iva) - like; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - raised;]
(That having approached the city Saubha deprived of brilliance, in the middle split (he) like a saw (splits) raised wood.)
Having approached that city of Saubha, which had lost its brilliance, he split it in the middle like a saw splits raised wood. (3-23-33)
द्विधा कृतं ततः सौभं सुदर्शनबलाद्धतम्। महेश्वरशरोद्धूतं पपात त्रिपुरं यथा ॥३-२३-३४॥
dvidhā kṛtaṃ tataḥ saubhaṃ sudarśanabalāddhatam। maheśvaraśaroddhūtaṃ papāta tripuraṃ yathā ॥3-23-34॥
[द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two parts; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - made; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सौभं (saubhaṃ) - Saubha (the aerial city); सुदर्शनबलात् (sudarśanabalāt) - by the power of Sudarshana; धतम् (dhatam) - struck; महेश्वरशर (maheśvaraśara) - by the arrow of Maheśvara; उद्धूतं (uddhūtaṃ) - blown away; पपात (papāta) - fell; त्रिपुरं (tripuraṃ) - Tripura (the triple city); यथा (yathā) - as;]
(In two parts made then Saubha by the power of Sudarshana struck; by the arrow of Maheśvara blown away fell as Tripura;)
Then Saubha, struck by the power of Sudarshana, was split in two; blown away by the arrow of Maheśvara, it fell just as Tripura did. (3-23-34)
तस्मिन्निपतिते सौभे चक्रमागात्करं मम। पुनश्चोद्धूय वेगेन शाल्वायेत्यहमब्रुवम् ॥३-२३-३५॥
tasminnipatite saubhe cakram āgāt karaṃ mama। punaś coddhūya vegena śālvāya ity aham abruvam ॥3-23-35॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; सौभे (saubhe) - on Saubha; चक्रम् (cakram) - discus; आगात् (āgāt) - came; करम् (karam) - hand; मम (mama) - my; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; उद्धूय (uddhūya) - having lifted up; वेगेन (vegena) - with speed; शाल्वाय (śālvāya) - at Śālva; इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said;]
(In that, having fallen on Saubha, the discus came to my hand. Again and having lifted up with speed at Śālva, thus I said.)
When the discus had fallen on Saubha, it returned to my hand. Then, having quickly lifted it again, I said to Śālva as follows. (3-23-35)
ततः शाल्वं गदां गुर्वीमाविध्यन्तं महाहवे। द्विधा चकार सहसा प्रजज्वाल च तेजसा ॥३-२३-३६॥
tataḥ śālvaṃ gadāṃ gurvīm āvidhyantaṃ mahāhave। dvidhā cakāra sahasā prajajvāla ca tejasā ॥3-23-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शाल्वं (śālvaṃ) - Śālva (the king); गदां (gadām) - mace; गुर्वीम् (gurvīm) - heavy; आविध्यन्तं (āvidhyantam) - wielding; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; द्विधा (dvidhā) - in two; चकार (cakāra) - made; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; प्रजज्वाल (prajajvāla) - blazed forth; च (ca) - and; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance;]
(Then Śālva, wielding a heavy mace in the great battle, was made into two suddenly and blazed forth by brilliance.)
Then, Śālva, who was wielding a heavy mace in the great battle, was suddenly split in two and blazed with brilliance. (3-23-36)
तस्मिन्निपतिते वीरे दानवास्त्रस्तचेतसः। हाहाभूता दिशो जग्मुरर्दिता मम सायकैः ॥३-२३-३७॥
tasminnipatite vīre dānavāstrastacetasaḥ। hāhābhūtā diśo jagmurarditā mama sāyakaiḥ ॥3-23-37॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; वीरे (vīre) - hero; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the dānavas; त्रस्तचेतसः (trastacetasaḥ) - with terrified minds; हाहाभूता (hāhābhūtā) - becoming distressed; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; अर्दिता (arditā) - tormented; मम (mama) - by my; सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - arrows;]
(In that (moment), with the hero having fallen, the dānavas with terrified minds, becoming distressed, went to the directions, tormented by my arrows.)
When that hero fell, the dānavas, their minds terrified, became distressed and fled in all directions, tormented by my arrows. (3-23-37)
ततोऽहं समवस्थाप्य रथं सौभसमीपतः। शङ्खं प्रध्माप्य हर्षेण सुहृदः पर्यहर्षयम् ॥३-२३-३८॥
tato'haṃ samavasthāpya rathaṃ saubhasamīpataḥ। śaṅkhaṃ pradhmāpya harṣeṇa suhṛdaḥ paryaharṣayam ॥3-23-38॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; समवस्थाप्य (samavasthāpya) - having properly stationed; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; सौभसमीपतः (saubhasamīpataḥ) - near Saubha; शङ्खम् (śaṅkham) - conch; प्रध्माप्य (pradhmāpya) - having blown; हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; पर्यहर्षयम् (paryaharṣayam) - I delighted;]
(Then I, having properly stationed the chariot near Saubha, having blown the conch with joy, delighted the friends.)
Then, after properly positioning the chariot near Saubha, I joyfully blew the conch and delighted my friends. (3-23-38)
तन्मेरुशिखराकारं विध्वस्ताट्टालगोपुरम्। दह्यमानमभिप्रेक्ष्य स्त्रियस्ताः सम्प्रदुद्रुवुः ॥३-२३-३९॥
tanmeruśikharākāraṃ vidhvastāṭṭālagopuram। dahyamānamabhiprekṣya striyastāḥ sampradudruvuḥ ॥3-23-39॥
[तत् (tat) - that; मेरुशिखराकारम् (meruśikharākāram) - having the form of the peak of Meru; विध्वस्त (vidhvasta) - destroyed; अट्टाल (aṭṭāla) - turrets; गोपुरम् (gopuram) - gate-tower; दह्यमानम् (dahyamānam) - burning; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having seen; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; ताः (tāḥ) - those; सम्प्रदुद्रुवुः (sampradudruvuḥ) - ran away together;]
(That, having the form of the peak of Meru, destroyed turrets and gate-tower, burning, having seen, women those ran away together.)
Seeing that city, shaped like the peak of Meru, with its turrets and gate-tower destroyed and burning, those women all fled together. (3-23-39)
एवं निहत्य समरे शाल्वं सौभं निपात्य च। आनर्तान्पुनरागम्य सुहृदां प्रीतिमावहम् ॥३-२३-४०॥
evaṃ nihatya samare śālvaṃ saubhaṃ nipātya ca। ānartān punar āgamya suhṛdāṃ prītim āvaham ॥3-23-40॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; समरे (samare) - in battle; शाल्वं (śālvaṃ) - Śālva; सौभं (saubhaṃ) - Saubha (his aerial city); निपात्य (nipātya) - having destroyed; च (ca) - and; आनर्तान् (ānartān) - the people of Ānarta; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगम्य (āgamya) - having returned; सुहृदां (suhṛdāṃ) - of friends; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - joy; आवहम् (āvaham) - bringing;]
(Thus, having slain Śālva in battle and having destroyed Saubha, and having returned again to the Ānartas, I brought joy to the friends.)
Thus, after slaying Śālva in battle and destroying Saubha, I returned again to the Ānartas, bringing joy to my friends. (3-23-40)
एतस्मात्कारणाद्राजन्नागमं नागसाह्वयम्। यद्यगां परवीरघ्न न हि जीवेत्सुयोधनः ॥३-२३-४१॥
etasmātkāraṇādrājannāgamaṃ nāgasāhvayam। yadyagāṃ paravīraghna na hi jīvetsuyodhanaḥ ॥3-23-41॥
[एतस्मात् (etasmāt) - from this; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - because of the reason; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नागमम् (nāgamam) - the assembly; नागसाह्वयम् (nāgasāhvayam) - named Nāgasāhvaya; यदि (yadi) - if; अगाम् (agām) - I went; परवीरघ्न (paravīraghna) - destroyer of enemy heroes; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवेत् (jīvet) - would live; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(From this reason, O king, the assembly named Nāgasāhvaya; if I went, destroyer of enemy heroes, not indeed would live Suyodhana.)
For this reason, O king, to the assembly called Nāgasāhvaya; if I had gone there, Suyodhana, the destroyer of enemy heroes, would certainly not have survived. (3-23-41)

[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - great-armed; कौरवम् (kauravam) - to Kaurava; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the best among men; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana;]
(Thus having spoken, the great-armed, the best among men, having addressed Kaurava, departed, the wise Madhusūdana, to the Pāṇḍavas.)
Having thus spoken to Kaurava, the great-armed and wise Madhusūdana, the best among men, took leave and went to the Pāṇḍavas. (3-23-42)
अभिवाद्य महाबाहुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। राज्ञा मूर्धन्युपाघ्रातो भीमेन च महाभुजः ॥३-२३-४३॥
abhivādya mahābāhur dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। rājñā mūrdhany upāghrāto bhīmena ca mahābhujaḥ ॥3-23-43॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; उपाघ्रातः (upāghrātaḥ) - having been smelled; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; च (ca) - and; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - the mighty-armed one;]
(Having saluted the mighty-armed king of dharma Yudhishthira, the mighty-armed one was smelled on the head by the king and by Bhima.)
After saluting the mighty-armed king Yudhishthira, the mighty-armed one was embraced and his head was smelled by the king and by Bhima. (3-23-43)
सुभद्रामभिमन्युं च रथमारोप्य काञ्चनम्। आरुरोह रथं कृष्णः पाण्डवैरभिपूजितः ॥३-२३-४४॥
subhadrām abhimanyuṃ ca ratham āropya kāñcanam। āruroha rathaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍavair abhipūjitaḥ ॥3-23-44॥

(Having placed Subhadrā and Abhimanyu upon the golden chariot, Kṛṣṇa, honored by the Pāṇḍavas, ascended the chariot. (3-23-44))
Kṛṣṇa, honored by the Pāṇḍavas, placed Subhadrā and Abhimanyu on the golden chariot and then ascended it himself. (3-23-44)
सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेनादित्यवर्चसा। द्वारकां प्रययौ कृष्णः समाश्वास्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३-२३-४५॥
sainyasugrīvayuktena rathenādityavarcasā। dvārakāṃ prayayau kṛṣṇaḥ samāśvāsya yudhiṣṭhiram ॥3-23-45॥
[सैन्य (sainya) - army; सुग्रीव (sugrīva) - with a fine neck-yoke; युक्तेन (yuktena) - joined with; रथेन (rathena) - by the chariot; आदित्यवर्चसा (ādityavarcasā) - with the brilliance of the sun; द्वारकां (dvārakāṃ) - to Dvārakā; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(With a chariot joined with army and a fine neck-yoke, with the brilliance of the sun, to Dvārakā departed Kṛṣṇa, having consoled Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Kṛṣṇa, after consoling Yudhiṣṭhira, departed for Dvārakā in a chariot equipped with a fine neck-yoke and accompanied by his army, shining with the brilliance of the sun. (3-23-45)
ततः प्रयाते दाशार्हे धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि पार्षतः। द्रौपदेयानुपादाय प्रययौ स्वपुरं तदा ॥३-२३-४६॥
tataḥ prayāte dāśārhe dhṛṣṭadyumno'pi pārṣataḥ। draupadeyānupādāya prayayau svapuraṃ tadā ॥3-23-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; प्रयाते (prayāte) - having departed; having gone; दाशार्हे (dāśārhe) - the Dāśārha (Krishna); धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; अपि (api) - also; even; पार्षतः (pārṣataḥ) - the son of Pṛṣata; द्रौपदेयान् (draupadeyān) - the sons of Draupadī; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; having brought; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; went; स्वपुरम् (svapuram) - his own city; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Then, after the Dāśārha had departed, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata, also, having taken the sons of Draupadī, went to his own city at that time.)
Then, after Krishna had left, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata, also took the sons of Draupadī and went to his own city at that time. (3-23-46)
धृष्टकेतुः स्वसारं च समादायाथ चेदिराट्। जगाम पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा रम्यां शुक्तिमतीं पुरीम् ॥३-२३-४७॥
dhṛṣṭaketuḥ svasāraṃ ca samādāyātha cedirāṭ। jagāma pāṇḍavāndṛṣṭvā ramyāṃ śuktimatīṃ purīm ॥3-23-47॥

(Dhṛṣṭaketu, his sister and having taken, then the king of the Cedis, went to the Pāṇḍavas, having seen the beautiful Śuktimatī city.)
Dhṛṣṭaketu, having taken his sister, then the king of the Cedis, went to the Pāṇḍavas after seeing the beautiful city of Śuktimatī. (3-23-47)
केकयाश्चाप्यनुज्ञाताः कौन्तेयेनामितौजसा। आमन्त्र्य पाण्डवान्सर्वान्प्रययुस्तेऽपि भारत ॥३-२३-४८॥
kekayāś cāpy anujñātāḥ kaunteyena amitaujasa। āmantrya pāṇḍavān sarvān prayayus te'pi bhārata ॥3-23-48॥
[केकयाः (kekayāḥ) - the Kekayas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुज्ञाताः (anujñātāḥ) - having been permitted; कौन्तेयेन (kaunteyena) - by the son of Kunti; अमितौजसा (amitaujasa) - of immeasurable energy; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having taken leave of; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रययुः (prayayus) - departed; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The Kekayas also, having been permitted by the son of Kunti of immeasurable energy, having taken leave of all the Pandavas, they too departed, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the Kekayas also, having received permission from the mighty son of Kunti, took leave of all the Pandavas and departed. (3-23-48)
ब्राह्मणाश्च विशश्चैव तथा विषयवासिनः। विसृज्यमानाः सुभृशं न त्यजन्ति स्म पाण्डवान् ॥३-२३-४९॥
brāhmaṇāś ca viśaś caiva tathā viṣayavāsinaḥ। visṛjyamānāḥ subhṛśaṃ na tyajanti sma pāṇḍavān ॥3-23-49॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; (priests;) च (ca) - and; विशः (viśaḥ) - common people; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - also; विषयवासिनः (viṣayavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the region; विसृज्यमानाः (visṛjyamānāḥ) - being dismissed; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - very much; न (na) - not; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - abandon; स्म (sma) - indeed; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Brāhmaṇas and common people indeed, also inhabitants of the region, being dismissed, very much, not abandon, indeed, the Pāṇḍavas.)
The Brāhmaṇas, the common people, and also the inhabitants of the region, even when being dismissed, did not at all abandon the Pāṇḍavas. (3-23-49)
समवायः स राजेन्द्र सुमहाद्भुतदर्शनः। आसीन्महात्मनां तेषां काम्यके भरतर्षभ ॥३-२३-५०॥
samavāyaḥ sa rājendra sumahādbhutadarśanaḥ। āsīnmahātmanāṃ teṣāṃ kāmyake bharatarṣabha ॥3-23-50॥
[समवायः (samavāyaḥ) - assembly; स (sa) - he; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सुमहाद्भुतदर्शनः (sumahādbhutadarśanaḥ) - of exceedingly wonderful appearance; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Assembly he O king of exceedingly wonderful appearance was of the great-souled of them in Kāmyaka O bull among the Bharatas.)
O king, that assembly of exceedingly wonderful appearance of those great-souled ones was in Kāmyaka, O bull among the Bharatas. (3-23-50)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु विप्रांस्ताननुमान्य महामनाः। शशास पुरुषान्काले रथान्योजयतेति ह ॥३-२३-५१॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tu viprāṁs tān anumānya mahāmanāḥ। śaśāsa puruṣān kāle rathān yojayate iti ha ॥3-23-51॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तु (tu) - but; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; तान् (tān) - those; अनुमान्य (anumānya) - having honored; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; शशास (śaśāsa) - ordered; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; रथान् (rathān) - chariots; योजयते (yojayate) - to yoke; इति (iti) - thus; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Yudhiṣṭhira but Brāhmaṇas those having honored great-minded ordered men at the proper time chariots to yoke thus indeed.)
But Yudhiṣṭhira, having honored those Brāhmaṇas, the great-minded one, ordered the men to yoke the chariots at the proper time, thus indeed. (3-23-51)
