तस्मिन्दशार्हाधिपतौ प्रयाते; युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनार्जुनौ च। यमौ च कृष्णा च पुरोहितश्च; रथान्महार्हान्परमाश्वयुक्तान् ॥३-२४-१॥
tasmin daśārhādhipatau prayāte; yudhiṣṭhiro bhīmasenārjunau ca. yamau ca kṛṣṇā ca purohitaś ca; rathān mahārhān paramāśvayuktān ॥3-24-1॥

आस्थाय वीराः सहिता वनाय; प्रतस्थिरे भूतपतिप्रकाशाः। हिरण्यनिष्कान्वसनानि गाश्च; प्रदाय शिक्षाक्षरमन्त्रविद्भ्यः ॥३-२४-२॥

[आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; having taken up; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; brave ones; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; united; वनाय (vanāya) - to the forest; प्रतस्थिरे (pratastire) - set out; departed; भूतपतिप्रकाशाः (bhūtapati-prakāśāḥ) - shining with the lord of beings; illuminated by the lord of beings; हिरण्यनिष्कान् (hiraṇya-niṣkān) - gold coins; golden ornaments; वसनानि (vasanāni) - garments; clothes; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; after giving; शिक्षाक्षरमन्त्रविद्भ्यः (śikṣākṣara-mantra-vidbhyaḥ) - to those who know the mantras of śikṣā and akṣara; to the knowers of the śikṣā, akṣara, and mantra;]
(Having resorted to, the heroes, united, to the forest; set out, shining with the lord of beings. Gold coins, garments, and cows; having given to the knowers of śikṣā, akṣara, and mantra. (3-24-2))
The heroes, united, having resolved, set out for the forest, shining with the lord of beings. They gave gold coins, garments, and cows to those who knew the śikṣā, akṣara, and mantra sciences. (3-24-2)
प्रेष्याः पुरो विंशतिरात्तशस्त्रा; धनूंषि वर्माणि शरांश्च पीतान्। मौर्वीश्च यन्त्राणि च सायकांश्च; सर्वे समादाय जघन्यमीयुः ॥३-२४-३॥
preṣyāḥ puro viṃśatirāttaśastrā; dhanūṃṣi varmāṇi śarāṃś ca pītān. maurvīś ca yantrāṇi ca sāyakāṃś ca; sarve samādāya jaghanyamīyuḥ ॥3-24-3॥
[प्रेष्याः (preṣyāḥ) - servants; पुरः (puraḥ) - in front; विंशति (viṃśati) - twenty; आत्तशस्त्राः (āttaśastrāḥ) - having taken up weapons; धनूंषि (dhanūṃṣi) - bows; वर्माणि (varmāṇi) - armors; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; पीतान् (pītān) - yellow; मौर्वीः (maurvīḥ) - bowstrings; च (ca) - and; यन्त्राणि (yantrāṇi) - mechanisms; च (ca) - and; सायकान् (sāyakān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; जघन्यम् (jaghanyam) - the hind part; ईयुः (īyuḥ) - went;]
(Servants in front, twenty, having taken up weapons; bows, armors, and yellow arrows; bowstrings and mechanisms and arrows; all having taken went to the hind part.)
Twenty servants in front, having taken up weapons—bows, armors, yellow arrows, bowstrings, mechanisms, and arrows—all of them, having gathered these, went to the rear. (3-24-3)
ततस्तु वासांसि च राजपुत्र्या; धात्र्यश्च दास्यश्च विभूषणं च। तदिन्द्रसेनस्त्वरितं प्रगृह्य; जघन्यमेवोपययौ रथेन ॥३-२४-४॥
tatastu vāsāṃsi ca rājaputryā; dhātryaśca dāsyaśca vibhūṣaṇaṃ ca. tadindrasenastvaritaṃ pragṛhya; jaghanyamevopayayau rathena ॥3-24-4॥

(Then but garments and by the princess; nursemaids and female servants and ornament and; that Indrasena quickly having taken; the hindmost indeed approached by chariot.)
Then, the garments by the princess, as well as the nursemaids, female servants, and ornaments, were quickly taken by Indrasena, who approached the hindmost by chariot. (3-24-4)
ततः कुरुश्रेष्ठमुपेत्य पौराः; प्रदक्षिणं चक्रुरदीनसत्त्वाः। तं ब्राह्मणाश्चाभ्यवदन्प्रसन्ना; मुख्याश्च सर्वे कुरुजाङ्गलानाम् ॥३-२४-५॥
tataḥ kuruśreṣṭhamupetya paurāḥ; pradakṣiṇaṃ cakruradīnasattvāḥ. taṃ brāhmaṇāścābhyavadanprasannā; mukhyāśca sarve kurujāṅgalānām ॥3-24-5॥

(Then, having approached the best of the Kurus, the citizens, with undepressed spirits, performed circumambulation. Him, the brāhmaṇas also, pleased, addressed; and the chiefs, all of the Kurujāṅgala.)

स चापि तानभ्यवदत्प्रसन्नः; सहैव तैर्भ्रातृभिर्धर्मराजः। तस्थौ च तत्राधिपतिर्महात्मा; दृष्ट्वा जनौघं कुरुजाङ्गलानाम् ॥३-२४-६॥
sa cāpi tān abhyavadat prasannaḥ; sahaiva tair bhrātṛbhiḥ dharmarājaḥ। tasthau ca tatra adhipatiḥ mahātmā; dṛṣṭvā jana-ogham kuru-jāṅgalānām ॥3-24-6॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तान् (tān) - them; अभ्यवदत् (abhyavadat) - addressed; प्रसन्नः (prasannaḥ) - pleased; सह (saha) - with; एव (eva) - indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - brothers; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; अधिपतिः (adhipatiḥ) - lord; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; जनौघम् (jana-ogham) - multitude of people; कुरुजाङ्गलानाम् (kuru-jāṅgalānām) - of the Kurujāṅgala people;]
(He and also, pleased, addressed them; with those brothers indeed, Dharmaraja; and the great-souled lord stood there; having seen the multitude of people of the Kurujāṅgala. (3-24-6))

पितेव पुत्रेषु स तेषु भावं; चक्रे कुरूणामृषभो महात्मा। ते चापि तस्मिन्भरतप्रबर्हे; तदा बभूवुः पितरीव पुत्राः ॥३-२४-७॥
piteva putreṣu sa teṣu bhāvaṃ; cakre kurūṇāmṛṣabho mahātmā. te cāpi tasmin bharataprabharhe; tadā babhūvuḥ pitarīva putrāḥ ॥3-24-7॥
[पितेव (piteva) - like a father; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - among sons; स (sa) - he; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; भावं (bhāvaṃ) - feeling; चक्रे (cakre) - made; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - bull; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; भरतप्रबर्हे (bharataprabharhe) - foremost of the Bharatas; तदा (tadā) - then; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; पितरीव (pitarīva) - like a father; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons;]
(Like a father among sons, he among them feeling made; of the Kurus the bull, great-souled. They and also in him, foremost of the Bharatas; then became like sons to a father.)
He, the great-souled bull among the Kurus, felt towards them as a father towards his sons. And they too, O foremost of the Bharatas, then became like sons to a father. (3-24-7)
ततः समासाद्य महाजनौघाः; कुरुप्रवीरं परिवार्य तस्थुः। हा नाथ हा धर्म इति ब्रुवन्तो; ह्रिया च सर्वेऽश्रुमुखा बभूवुः ॥३-२४-८॥
tataḥ samāsādya mahājanaughāḥ; kurupravīraṃ parivārya tasthuḥ. hā nātha hā dharma iti bruvanto; hriyā ca sarve'śrumukhā babhūvuḥ ॥3-24-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; महाजनौघाः (mahājanaughāḥ) - great multitude of people; कुरुप्रवीरं (kurupravīram) - the Kuru hero; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - stood; हा (hā) - alas; नाथ (nātha) - lord; हा (hā) - alas; धर्म (dharma) - Dharma; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन्तः (bruvantaḥ) - saying; ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अश्रुमुखाः (aśrumukhāḥ) - tear-faced; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became;]
(Then, having approached, the great multitude of people, having surrounded the Kuru hero, stood. "Alas, lord! Alas, Dharma!"—thus saying, with modesty and all became tear-faced.)
Then, the great multitude of people approached and surrounded the Kuru hero and stood there. Crying out, "Alas, lord! Alas, Dharma!" they all, with modesty, became tear-faced. (3-24-8)
वरः कुरूणामधिपः प्रजानां; पितेव पुत्रानपहाय चास्मान्। पौरानिमाञ्जानपदांश्च सर्वा; न्हित्वा प्रयातः क्व नु धर्मराजः ॥३-२४-९॥

(The best lord of the Kurus, of the subjects, like a father (to his) sons, having abandoned us and all these citizens and countrymen, having left, departed; where indeed is Dharmaraja?)

धिग्धार्तराष्ट्रं सुनृशंसबुद्धिं; ससौबलं पापमतिं च कर्णम्। अनर्थमिच्छन्ति नरेन्द्र पापा; ये धर्मनित्यस्य सतस्तवोग्राः ॥३-२४-१०॥
dhigdhārtarāṣṭraṃ sunṛśaṃsabuddhiṃ; sasoubalaṃ pāpamatiṃ ca karṇam। anarthamicchanti narendra pāpā; ye dharmanityasya satastavogrāḥ ॥3-24-10॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; reproach; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra's son; Duryodhana; सुनृशंसबुद्धिं (sunṛśaṃsabuddhiṃ) - having very cruel mind; स (sa) - with; सौबलम् (saubalam) - Saubala; (Shakuni, son of Subala); पापमतिं (pāpamatiṃ) - evil-minded; च (ca) - and; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; अनर्थम् (anartham) - evil; misfortune; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; wish; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - the wicked; evil ones; ये (ye) - who; धर्मनित्यस्य (dharmanityasya) - of the one always in dharma; सतः (sataḥ) - of the good; of the virtuous; तव (tava) - your; उग्राः (ugrāḥ) - fierce; harsh;]
(Condemnation to Dhritarashtra's son, of very cruel mind; with Saubala, evil-minded, and Karna. Evil is desired, O king, by the wicked; who are fierce towards your ever-righteous and virtuous ones.)
Condemnation to Duryodhana, who has a very cruel mind, along with Shakuni, the evil-minded, and Karna. O king, it is the wicked who desire evil, those fierce ones who oppose your ever-righteous and virtuous people. (3-24-10)
स्वयं निवेश्याप्रतिमं महात्मा; पुरं महद्देवपुरप्रकाशम्। शतक्रतुप्रस्थममोघकर्मा; हित्वा प्रयातः क्व नु धर्मराजः ॥३-२४-११॥
svayaṃ niveśyāpratimaṃ mahātmā; puraṃ mahaddevapuraprakāśam. śatakratuprasthamamoghakarmā; hitvā prayātaḥ kva nu dharmarājaḥ ॥3-24-11॥

(Oneself having established the unrivaled great-souled city, great, shining like the city of the gods, the seat of Indra, whose actions are unfailing, having abandoned, departed; where indeed is the king of dharma?)
Having himself established the unrivaled, great city, shining like the city of the gods, the seat of Indra, the great-souled one whose actions are unfailing has departed after abandoning it; where indeed has the king of dharma gone? (3-24-11)
चकार यामप्रतिमां महात्मा; सभां मयो देवसभाप्रकाशाम्। तां देवगुप्तामिव देवमायां; हित्वा प्रयातः क्व नु धर्मराजः ॥३-२४-१२॥
cakāra yāmapratimāṃ mahātmā; sabhāṃ mayo devasabhāprakāśām. tāṃ devaguptāmiva devamāyāṃ; hitvā prayātaḥ kva nu dharmarājaḥ ॥3-24-12॥
[चकार (cakāra) - he did; यामप्रतिमां (yāmapratimām) - equal to Yama; (the god of death); महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; सभां (sabhām) - assembly hall; मयः (mayaḥ) - Maya (the architect); देवसभाप्रकाशाम् (devasabhāprakāśām) - shining like the assembly of the gods; तां (tām) - that; देवगुप्ताम् (devaguptām) - protected by the gods; इव (iva) - like; देवमायाम् (devamāyām) - divine illusion; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira);]
(He did (make) an assembly hall equal to Yama, the great-souled one; Maya (the architect) (made) an assembly hall shining like the assembly of the gods. That (hall), protected by the gods, like a divine illusion, having abandoned (it), departed; where indeed is Dharmaraja?)
The great-souled one had an assembly hall constructed, equal to Yama's, by Maya, shining like the assembly of the gods. That hall, protected by the gods and resembling a divine illusion, has been abandoned; where indeed has Dharmaraja gone? (3-24-12)
तान्धर्मकामार्थविदुत्तमौजा; बीभत्सुरुच्चैः सहितानुवाच। आदास्यते वासमिमं निरुष्य; वनेषु राजा द्विषतां यशांसि ॥३-२४-१३॥
tāndharmakāmārthaviduttamauja; bībhatsuruccaiḥ sahitānuvāca। ādāsyate vāsamimaṃ niruṣya; vaneṣu rājā dviṣatāṃ yaśāṃsi ॥3-24-13॥
[तान् (tān) - them; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; काम (kāma) - desire; अर्थ (artha) - wealth; विद् (vid) - knowing; उत्तम (uttama) - excellent; उजस् (ojas) - strength; बीभत्सु (bībhatsu) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); रुच्चैः (ruccaiḥ) - in a loud voice; सहितान् (sahitān) - those who are together; उवाच (uvāca) - said; आदास्यते (ādāsyate) - will take; वासम् (vāsam) - dwelling; इमम् (imam) - this; निरुष्य (niruṣya) - having dwelt; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; राजा (rājā) - the king; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of the enemies; यशांसि (yaśāṃsi) - fames;]
(Them, righteousness, desire, wealth, knowing, excellent, strength, Bībhatsu in a loud voice to those who are together said. Will take dwelling this having dwelt in the forests, the king of the enemies fames.)
Bībhatsu (Arjuna), knowing them to be excellent in righteousness, desire, and wealth, and strength, said in a loud voice to those assembled. The king, having dwelt in these forests, will take this dwelling and the fame of the enemies. (3-24-13)
द्विजातिमुख्याः सहिताः पृथक्च; भवद्भिरासाद्य तपस्विनश्च। प्रसाद्य धर्मार्थविदश्च वाच्या; यथार्थसिद्धिः परमा भवेन्नः ॥३-२४-१४॥
dvijātimukhyāḥ sahitāḥ pṛthak ca; bhavadbhiḥ āsādya tapasvinaś ca। prasādya dharmārthavidaś ca vācyā; yathārthasiddhiḥ paramā bhaven naḥ ॥3-24-14॥
[द्विजातिमुख्याः (dvijātimukhyāḥ) - best among twice-born; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; च (ca) - and; भवद्भिः (bhavadbhiḥ) - by you; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; च (ca) - and; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; धर्मार्थविदः (dharmārthavidaḥ) - knowers of dharma and artha; च (ca) - and; वाच्या (vācyāḥ) - should be addressed; यथार्थसिद्धिः (yathārthasiddhiḥ) - attainment of true purpose; परमा (paramā) - supreme; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(Best among twice-born together and separately, by you having approached ascetics and having propitiated knowers of dharma and artha and should be addressed; attainment of true purpose supreme may be for us.)
You should approach the foremost among the twice-born, both together and separately, as well as ascetics, and respectfully address those who know dharma and artha; thus, the supreme attainment of the true purpose may be ours. (3-24-14)
इत्येवमुक्ते वचनेऽर्जुनेन; ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्ववर्णाश्च राजन्। मुदाभ्यनन्दन्सहिताश्च चक्रुः; प्रदक्षिणं धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठम् ॥३-२४-१५॥

[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; वचने (vacane) - speech; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; ते (te) - they; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; सर्ववर्णाः (sarvavarṇāḥ) - all castes; च (ca) - and; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; अभ्यनन्दन् (abhyanandan) - they rejoiced; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; च (ca) - and; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they did; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - the most excellent;]
(Thus, when this speech was spoken by Arjuna; those Brāhmaṇas and all castes, O king, with joy rejoiced together and did circumambulation of the most excellent among the upholders of dharma. (3-24-15))
When Arjuna had thus spoken these words, O king, the Brāhmaṇas and people of all castes, rejoicing together with happiness, circumambulated the foremost among the upholders of dharma. (3-24-15)
आमन्त्र्य पार्थं च वृकोदरं च; धनञ्जयं याज्ञसेनीं यमौ च। प्रतस्थिरे राष्ट्रमपेतहर्षा; युधिष्ठिरेणानुमता यथास्वम् ॥३-२४-१६॥
āmantrya pārthaṃ ca vṛkodaraṃ ca; dhanañjayaṃ yājñasenīṃ yamau ca. pratast hire rāṣṭramapetaharṣā; yudhiṣṭhireṇānumatā yathāsvam ॥3-24-16॥
[आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; पार्थं (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; वृकोदरं (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); च (ca) - and; धनञ्जयं (dhanañjayaṃ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); याज्ञसेनीं (yājñasenīṃ) - Yājñasenī (Draupadī); यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; प्रतस्थिरे (pratast hire) - set out; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - to the kingdom; अपेतहर्षा (apetaharṣā) - devoid of joy; युधिष्ठिरेण (yudhiṣṭhireṇa) - by Yudhiṣṭhira; अनुमता (anumata) - having been permitted; यथास्वम् (yathāsvam) - each to their own;]
(Having addressed Pārtha and Vṛkodara and Dhanañjaya, Yājñasenī, the two sons of Yama, and having been permitted by Yudhiṣṭhira, devoid of joy, they set out to the kingdom, each to their own.)
After addressing Pārtha, Vṛkodara, Dhanañjaya, Yājñasenī, and the twin sons of Yama, and with Yudhiṣṭhira's permission, they, bereft of joy, set out for their respective kingdoms. (3-24-16)
