Pancharatra: Pandavas enter Dvaitavana forest.

ततस्तेषु प्रयातेषु कौन्तेयः सत्यसङ्गरः। अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा भ्रातॄन्सर्वान्युधिष्ठिरः ॥३-२५-१॥
tatasteṣu prayāteṣu kaunteyaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ। abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā bhrātṝnsarvānyudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥3-25-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; प्रयातेषु (prayāteṣu) - having departed; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - steadfast in truth; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Then, in them having departed, the son of Kunti, steadfast in truth, addressed, the righteous-souled, all brothers, Yudhishthira.)
Then, after they had departed, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti who was steadfast in truth and righteous-souled, addressed all his brothers. (3-25-1)
द्वादशेमाः समास्माभिर्वस्तव्यं निर्जने वने। समीक्षध्वं महारण्ये देशं बहुमृगद्विजम् ॥३-२५-२॥
dvādaśemāḥ samāsmābhirvastavyaṃ nirjane vane. samīkṣadhvaṃ mahāraṇye deśaṃ bahumṛgadvijam ॥3-25-2॥
[द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; समाः (samāḥ) - years; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; वस्तव्यं (vastavyam) - to be dwelt; निर्जने (nirjane) - in the deserted; वने (vane) - forest; समीक्षध्वं (samīkṣadhvam) - you all examine; महारण्ये (mahāraṇye) - in the great forest; देशं (deśam) - place; बहु (bahu) - much; मृग (mṛga) - animal; द्विजम् (dvijam) - bird;]
(Twelve these years by us are to be dwelt in the deserted forest. You all examine in the great forest a place with many animals and birds. (3-25-2))
We must dwell here in this deserted forest for twelve years. Please look for a place in the great forest that is abundant with animals and birds. (3-25-2)
बहुपुष्पफलं रम्यं शिवं पुण्यजनोचितम्। यत्रेमाः शरदः सर्वाः सुखं प्रतिवसेमहि ॥३-२५-३॥
bahupuṣpaphalaṃ ramyaṃ śivaṃ puṇyajanocitam। yatre māḥ śaradaḥ sarvāḥ sukhaṃ prativasemahi ॥3-25-3॥
[बहु (bahu) - many; पुष्प (puṣpa) - flowers; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruits; रम्यं (ramyaṃ) - beautiful; शिवं (śivaṃ) - auspicious; पुण्य (puṇya) - virtuous; जन (jana) - people; उचितम् (ucitam) - suitable; यत्र (yatra) - where; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; शरदः (śaradaḥ) - autumns; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happily; प्रतिवसेमहि (prativasemahi) - may we dwell;]
(Many flowers fruits beautiful auspicious virtuous people suitable; where these autumns all happily may we dwell.)
May we dwell happily through all these autumns in a place that is beautiful, auspicious, full of many flowers and fruits, and suitable for virtuous people. (3-25-3)
एवमुक्ते प्रत्युवाच धर्मराजं धनञ्जयः। गुरुवन्मानवगुरुं मानयित्वा मनस्विनम् ॥३-२५-४॥
evam-ukte pratyuvāca dharmarājaṃ dhanañjayaḥ। guru-van-mānava-guruṃ mānayitvā manasvinam ॥3-25-4॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this manner; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; spoken; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; answered; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja; king of dharma; Yudhiṣṭhira; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; Arjuna; गुरुवत् (guru-vat) - like a teacher; as to a guru; मानवगुरुम् (mānava-gurum) - the human teacher; guru of men; मानयित्वा (mānayitvā) - having honored; having respected; मनस्विनम् (manasvinam) - the high-minded one; the wise;]
(Thus, having been said, replied to Dharmarāja Dhanañjaya; like a teacher, the human teacher having honored the high-minded one.)
When this was said, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) replied to Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); having honored the high-minded human teacher as one would a guru. (3-25-4)

भवानेव महर्षीणां वृद्धानां पर्युपासिता। अज्ञातं मानुषे लोके भवतो नास्ति किञ्चन ॥३-२५-५॥
bhavāneva maharṣīṇāṃ vṛddhānāṃ paryupāsitā। ajñātaṃ mānuṣe loke bhavato nāsti kiñcana ॥3-25-5॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); एव (eva) - indeed; only; महर्षीणाम् (maharṣīṇām) - of the great sages; वृद्धानाम् (vṛddhānām) - of the elders; पर्युपासिता (paryupāsitā) - attended upon; served; अज्ञातम् (ajñātam) - unknown; मानुषे (mānuṣe) - in the human; लोके (loke) - in the world; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; (honorific); नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(You indeed, attended upon by the great sages and elders. Unknown in the human world is anything of you.)
You alone are attended by the great sages and elders. There is nothing about you that is unknown in the world of men. (3-25-5)
त्वया ह्युपासिता नित्यं ब्राह्मणा भरतर्षभ। द्वैपायनप्रभृतयो नारदश्च महातपाः ॥३-२५-६॥
tvayā hyupāsitā nityaṃ brāhmaṇā bharatarṣabha। dvaipāyanaprabhṛtayo nāradaś ca mahātapāḥ ॥3-25-6॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; उपासिता (upāsitā) - have been served; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; द्वैपायनप्रभृतयः (dvaipāyanaprabhṛtayaḥ) - beginning with Dvaipāyana; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; च (ca) - and; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetics;]
(By you indeed have always been served Brāhmaṇas, O bull among the Bharatas; beginning with Dvaipāyana, Nārada and great ascetics.)
O best of the Bharatas, you have always served Brāhmaṇas, especially great ascetics such as Dvaipāyana and Nārada. (3-25-6)
यः सर्वलोकद्वाराणि नित्यं सञ्चरते वशी। देवलोकाद्ब्रह्मलोकं गन्धर्वाप्सरसामपि ॥३-२५-७॥
yaḥ sarvalokadvārāṇi nityaṃ sañcarate vaśī। devalokād brahmalokaṃ gandharvāpsarasām api ॥3-25-7॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सर्वलोकद्वाराणि (sarvalokadvārāṇi) - all-worlds-gates; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - constantly; सञ्चरते (sañcarate) - moves about; वशी (vaśī) - self-controlled; देवलोकात् (devalokāt) - from the world of gods; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokaṃ) - Brahma's world; गन्धर्वाप्सरसाम् (gandharvāpsarasām) - of Gandharvas and Apsarases; अपि (api) - even;]
(Who all-worlds-gates constantly moves about self-controlled; from the world of gods Brahma's world of Gandharvas and Apsarases even.)
He who, being self-controlled, constantly moves through all the gates of the worlds, from the world of the gods to Brahma's world, and even among the Gandharvas and Apsarases. (3-25-7)
सर्वा गतीर्विजानासि ब्राह्मणानां न संशयः। प्रभावांश्चैव वेत्थ त्वं सर्वेषामेव पार्थिव ॥३-२५-८॥
sarvā gatīr vijānāsi brāhmaṇānāṃ na saṃśayaḥ। prabhāvāṃś caiva vettha tvaṃ sarveṣām eva pārthiva ॥3-25-8॥
[सर्वा (sarvā) - all; गतीः (gatīḥ) - paths; विजानासि (vijānāsi) - you know; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; प्रभावान् (prabhāvān) - powers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(You know all the paths of the Brāhmaṇas, there is no doubt; and indeed you know the powers of all, O king.)
O king, you know all the paths of the Brāhmaṇas without any doubt, and you also know the powers of everyone.
त्वमेव राजञ्जानासि श्रेयःकारणमेव च। यत्रेच्छसि महाराज निवासं तत्र कुर्महे ॥३-२५-९॥
tvam eva rājan jānāsi śreyaḥ-kāraṇam eva ca। yatra icchasi mahārāja nivāsaṃ tatra kurmahe॥3-25-9॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जानासि (jānāsi) - know; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the better; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; यत्र (yatra) - where; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; निवासम् (nivāsaṃ) - residence; तत्र (tatra) - there; कुर्महे (kurmahe) - we shall make;]
(You indeed, O king, know the better reason indeed and; where you desire, O great king, residence there we shall make.)
You alone, O king, know the best reason; wherever you wish, O great king, we shall make our residence there. (3-25-9)
इदं द्वैतवनं नाम सरः पुण्यजनोचितम्। बहुपुष्पफलं रम्यं नानाद्विजनिषेवितम् ॥३-२५-१०॥
idaṃ dvaitavanaṃ nāma saraḥ puṇyajanocitam। bahupuṣpaphalaṃ ramyaṃ nānādvijaniṣevitam ॥3-25-10॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; द्वैतवनं (dvaitavanaṃ) - Dvaitavana; (the forest named Dvaita;) नाम (nāma) - named; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; पुण्यजनोचितम् (puṇyajanocitam) - fit for virtuous people; बहुपुष्पफलं (bahupuṣpaphalaṃ) - having many flowers and fruits; रम्यं (ramyaṃ) - pleasant; नानाद्विजनिषेवितम् (nānādvijaniṣevitam) - frequented by various twice-born (brāhmaṇas, etc.);]
(This Dvaitavana named lake, fit for virtuous people, having many flowers and fruits, pleasant, frequented by various twice-born.)
This is the lake called Dvaitavana, suitable for virtuous people, abundant with many flowers and fruits, delightful, and frequented by various brāhmaṇas and other twice-born. (3-25-10)
अत्रेमा द्वादश समा विहरेमेति रोचये। यदि तेऽनुमतं राजन्किं वान्यन्मन्यते भवान् ॥३-२५-११॥
atre mā dvādaśa samā viharemeti rocaye। yadi te'numataṃ rājan kiṃ vānyan manyate bhavān ॥3-25-11॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; इमा (imā) - these; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; समा (samā) - years; विहरेम (viharema) - let us dwell; इति (iti) - thus; रोचये (rocaye) - I desire; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; अनुमतम् (anumataṃ) - approved; राजन् (rājan) - O king; किम् (kim) - what; वा (vā) - or; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself;]
(Here these twelve years let us dwell thus I desire. If to you approved O king what or else thinks yourself.)
I wish that we may dwell here for these twelve years, if it is approved by you, O king. Or does your mind consider something else? (3-25-11)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

ममाप्येतन्मतं पार्थ त्वया यत्समुदाहृतम्। गच्छाम पुण्यं विख्यातं महद्द्वैतवनं सरः ॥३-२५-१२॥
mamāpy etan mataṁ pārtha tvayā yat samudāhṛtam। gacchāma puṇyaṁ vikhyātaṁ mahad-dvaitavanaṁ saraḥ ॥3-25-12॥
[मम (mama) - of me; अपि (api) - also; एतत् (etat) - this; मतम् (matam) - opinion; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; यत् (yat) - which; समुदाहृतम् (samudāhṛtam) - has been stated; गच्छाम (gacchāma) - let us go; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; विख्यातम् (vikhyātam) - famous; महत् (mahat) - great; द्वैतवनम् (dvaitavanam) - Dvaitavana (the forest named Dvaita); सरः (saraḥ) - lake;]
(Of me also this opinion, O Pārtha, by you which has been stated; let us go to the holy, famous, great Dvaitavana lake.)
O Pārtha, I too hold the same opinion as you have expressed; let us go to the renowned and sacred great lake of Dvaitavana. (3-25-12)

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; ते (te) - they; प्रययुः (prayayuḥ) - set forth; went; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; धर्मचारिणः (dharmacāriṇaḥ) - practisers of dharma; followers of righteousness; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with Brāhmaṇas; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together with; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; auspicious; द्वैतवनम् (dvaitavanam) - Dwaita forest; सरः (saraḥ) - lake;]
(Then they set forth, all the Pāṇḍavas, followers of dharma, together with many Brāhmaṇas, to the holy Dwaita forest lake.)
Then all the Pāṇḍavas, who were followers of righteousness, together with many Brāhmaṇas, set out for the sacred lake in the Dwaita forest. (3-25-13)
ब्राह्मणाः साग्निहोत्राश्च तथैव च निरग्नयः। स्वाध्यायिनो भिक्षवश्च सजपा वनवासिनः ॥३-२५-१४॥
brāhmaṇāḥ sāgnihotrāś ca tathaiva ca niragnayaḥ। svādhyāyino bhikṣavaś ca sajapā vanavāsinaḥ ॥3-25-14॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; साग्निहोत्राः (sāgnihotrāḥ) - with Agnihotra; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; निरग्नयः (niragnayaḥ) - without fire; स्वाध्यायिनः (svādhyāyinaḥ) - self-study practitioners; भिक्षवः (bhikṣavaḥ) - mendicants; च (ca) - and; सजपाः (sajapāḥ) - with recitation; वनवासिनः (vanavāsinaḥ) - forest-dwellers;]
(Brāhmaṇas with Agnihotra and likewise and those without fire; self-study practitioners, mendicants and with recitation, forest-dwellers.)
Brāhmaṇas who perform Agnihotra, as well as those without fire, those devoted to self-study, mendicants, those who recite, and forest-dwellers. (3-25-14)
बहवो ब्राह्मणास्तत्र परिवव्रुर्युधिष्ठिरम्। तपस्विनः सत्यशीलाः शतशः संशितव्रताः ॥३-२५-१५॥
bahavo brāhmaṇās tatra parivavrur yudhiṣṭhiram। tapasvinaḥ satyaśīlāḥ śataśaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ ॥3-25-15॥
[बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; तत्र (tatra) - there; परिवव्रुः (parivavrur) - surrounded; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; सत्यशीलाः (satyaśīlāḥ) - truthful-natured; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm in vows;]
(Many Brāhmaṇas there surrounded Yudhiṣṭhira; ascetics, truthful-natured, by hundreds, firm in vows.)
There, many Brāhmaṇas, ascetics of truthful nature and firm vows, by the hundreds, surrounded Yudhiṣṭhira. (3-25-15)
ते यात्वा पाण्डवास्तत्र बहुभिर्ब्राह्मणैः सह। पुण्यं द्वैतवनं रम्यं विविशुर्भरतर्षभाः ॥३-२५-१६॥
te yātvā pāṇḍavās tatra bahubhir brāhmaṇaiḥ saha। puṇyaṃ dvaitavanaṃ ramyaṃ viviśur bharatarṣabhāḥ ॥3-25-16॥

(They, having gone, the Pāṇḍavas, there, with many Brāhmaṇas together, the holy Dvaita forest, pleasant, entered, the best of the Bharatas.)

तच्छालतालाम्रमधूकनीप; कदम्बसर्जार्जुनकर्णिकारैः। तपात्यये पुष्पधरैरुपेतं; महावनं राष्ट्रपतिर्ददर्श ॥३-२५-१७॥
tacchālatālāmramadhūkanīpa; kadambasarjārjunakarṇikāraiḥ। tapātyaye puṣpadharairupetaṃ; mahāvanaṃ rāṣṭrapatirdadarśa ॥3-25-17॥

(That (forest) of śāla, palmyra, mango, madhūka, nīpa, kadamba, sarja, arjuna, (and) with karṇikāra trees, at the end of the heat, endowed with flower-bearing (trees), the great forest the king saw.)
The king saw that great forest, filled with śāla, palmyra, mango, madhūka, nīpa, kadamba, sarja, arjuna, and karṇikāra trees, adorned with flowers at the end of the hot season. (3-25-17)
महाद्रुमाणां शिखरेषु तस्थु; र्मनोरमां वाचमुदीरयन्तः। मयूरदात्यूहचकोरसङ्घा; स्तस्मिन्वने काननकोकिलाश्च ॥३-२५-१८॥
mahādrumāṇāṃ śikhareṣu tasthu; rmanoramāṃ vācamudīrayantaḥ। mayūradātyūhacakorasaṅghā; stasminvane kānanakokilāśca ॥3-25-18॥

(On the tops of great trees stood, uttering pleasing speech, groups of peacocks, cranes, and partridges; in that forest, and forest-cuckoos.)

kareṇuyūthaiḥ saha yūthapānāṃ; madotkaṭānām acalaprabḥāṇām. mahānti yūthāni mahādvipānāṃ; tasmin vane rāṣṭrapatir dadarśa ॥3-25-19॥
[करेणुयूथैः (kareṇuyūthaiḥ) - by herds of female elephants; सह (saha) - together with; यूथपानां (yūthapānām) - of the leaders of herds; मदोत्कटानाम् (madotkaṭānām) - of those who are exceedingly intoxicated; अचलप्रभाणाम् (acalaprabḥāṇām) - of those whose splendour is like a mountain; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; यूथानि (yūthāni) - herds; महाद्विपानां (mahādvipānāṃ) - of great elephants; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वने (vane) - forest; राष्ट्रपति: (rāṣṭrapatiḥ) - the king; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw;]
(By herds of female elephants together with the leaders of herds, of those exceedingly intoxicated, of those whose splendour is like a mountain; great herds of great elephants; in that forest the king saw.)
In that forest, the king saw great herds of mighty elephants, led by their chiefs, accompanied by groups of female elephants, all of whom were exceedingly intoxicated and whose splendour was like that of mountains. (3-25-19)
मनोरमां भोगवतीमुपेत्य; धृतात्मनां चीरजटाधराणाम्। तस्मिन्वने धर्मभृतां निवासे; ददर्श सिद्धर्षिगणाननेकान् ॥३-२५-२०॥
manoramāṃ bhogavatīmupetya; dhṛtātmanāṃ cīra-jaṭā-dharāṇām। tasmin vane dharma-bhṛtāṃ nivāse; dadarśa siddharṣigaṇānanekān ॥3-25-20॥

(Having approached the charming, delightful (place), in the abode of the self-restrained, wearers of bark garments and matted hair, in that forest, of the upholders of dharma, he saw many groups of perfected sage(s).)

ततः स यानादवरुह्य राजा; सभ्रातृकः सजनः काननं तत्। विवेश धर्मात्मवतां वरिष्ठ; स्त्रिविष्टपं शक्र इवामितौजाः ॥३-२५-२१॥

(Then he, having descended from the vehicle, the king, with his brothers and people, entered that forest; the foremost of the righteous, like Indra of immeasurable energy, entered heaven.)

स तत्र सिद्धानभिवाद्य सर्वा; न्प्रत्यर्चितो राजवद्देववच्च। विवेश सर्वैः सहितो द्विजाग्र्यैः; कृताञ्जलिर्धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठः ॥३-२५-२३॥
