Pancharatra: Markandeya visits Pandavas and advises them not to follow adharma, thinking they are powerful.

तत्काननं प्राप्य नरेन्द्रपुत्राः; सुखोचिता वासमुपेत्य कृच्छ्रम्। विजह्रुरिन्द्रप्रतिमाः शिवेषु; सरस्वतीशालवनेषु तेषु ॥३-२६-१॥
tatkānanaṃ prāpya narendraputrāḥ; sukhocitā vāsamupetya kṛcchram। vijahrur indrapratimāḥ śiveṣu; sarasvatīśālavanṣu teṣu ॥3-26-1॥
[तत् (tat) - that; काननम् (kānanam) - forest; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; नरेन्द्रपुत्राः (narendraputrāḥ) - sons of the king; सुखोचिता (sukhocitā) - accustomed to comfort; वासम् (vāsam) - dwelling; उपेत्य (upetya) - having approached; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - difficulty; विजह्रुः (vijahrur) - they sported; इन्द्रप्रतिमाः (indrapratimāḥ) - equal to Indra; शिवेषु (śiveṣu) - in auspicious (places); सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvati; शालवनेषु (śālavanṣu) - in groves of śāla trees; तेषु (teṣu) - in those;]
(That forest having reached, the sons of the king, accustomed to comfort, having approached dwelling with difficulty, they sported, equal to Indra, in auspicious places, in the groves of śāla trees of Sarasvati, in those.)
Having reached that forest, the sons of the king, though accustomed to comfort, endured hardship in their dwelling and sported like Indra in the auspicious groves of śāla trees on the banks of the Sarasvati. (3-26-1)
यतींश्च सर्वान्स मुनींश्च राजा; तस्मिन्वने मूलफलैरुदग्रैः। द्विजातिमुख्यानृषभः कुरूणां; सन्तर्पयामास महानुभावः ॥३-२६-२॥

(He, the king, satisfied all the ascetics and sages in that forest with abundant roots and fruits, the bull among the Kurus, the great-souled, satisfied the foremost of the twice-born.)

[इष्टीः (iṣṭīḥ) - sacrificial rites; च (ca) - and; पित्र्याणि (pitryāṇi) - ancestral (rites); तथा (tathā) - also; अग्रियाणि (agriyāṇi) - foremost (rites); महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; वसताम् (vasatām) - of those dwelling; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; पुरोहितः (purohitaḥ) - the priest; सर्वसमृद्धतेजा (sarvasamṛddhatejā) - of all-accomplished splendor; श्चकार (ścakāra) - performed; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; पितृवत् (pitṛvat) - like a father; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus;]
(Sacrificial rites and ancestral (rites), also foremost (rites), in the great forest of those dwelling, of the Pāṇḍavas, the priest of all-accomplished splendor, performed Dhaumya, like a father, of the Kurus.)
While the Pāṇḍavas dwelt in the great forest, Dhaumya, the priest of the Kurus, who possessed all-accomplished splendor, performed sacrificial, ancestral, and foremost rites for them like a father. (3-26-3)
अपेत्य राष्ट्राद्वसतां तु तेषा; मृषिः पुराणोऽतिथिराजगाम। तमाश्रमं तीव्रसमृद्धतेजा; मार्कण्डेयः श्रीमतां पाण्डवानाम् ॥३-२६-४॥
apetya rāṣṭrād vasatāṃ tu teṣā; mṛṣiḥ purāṇo'tithir ājagāma. tam āśramaṃ tīvrasamṛddhatejā; mārkaṇḍeyaḥ śrīmatāṃ pāṇḍavānām ॥3-26-4॥
[अपेत्य (apetya) - having departed; राष्ट्रात् (rāṣṭrāt) - from the kingdom; वसतां (vasatām) - of those dwelling; तु (tu) - but; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; मृषिः (mṛṣiḥ) - sage; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; तीव्रसमृद्धतेजा (tīvrasamṛddhatejā) - of intense and abundant splendor; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; श्रीमताम् (śrīmatām) - of the glorious; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas;]
(Having departed from the kingdom of those dwelling but of them, the ancient sage guest arrived. That hermitage of intense and abundant splendor, Markandeya of the glorious Pandavas.)
After they had left the kingdom and were dwelling elsewhere, the ancient sage and guest, Markandeya, who possessed intense and abundant splendor, came to the hermitage of the illustrious Pandavas. (3-26-4)
स सर्वविद्द्रौपदीं प्रेक्ष्य कृष्णां; युधिष्ठिरं भीमसेनार्जुनौ च। संस्मृत्य रामं मनसा महात्मा; तपस्विमध्येऽस्मयतामितौजाः ॥३-२६-५॥
sa sarvavid-draupadīṃ prekṣya kṛṣṇāṃ; yudhiṣṭhiraṃ bhīmasenārjunau ca. saṃsmṛtya rāmaṃ manasā mahātmā; tapasvimadhye'smayatāmitaujāḥ ॥3-26-5॥
[स (sa) - he; सर्वविद् (sarvavid) - all-knowing; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇāṃ) - Kṛṣṇā; युधिष्ठिरं (yudhiṣṭhiraṃ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhīmasena and Arjuna; च (ca) - and; संस्मृत्य (saṃsmṛtya) - having remembered; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; तपस्विमध्ये (tapasvimadhye) - among ascetics; अस्मयत (asmayata) - smiled; अमितौजाः (amitaujāḥ) - of immeasurable energy;]
(He, all-knowing, having seen Draupadī, Kṛṣṇā, Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena and Arjuna and having remembered Rāma with (his) mind, the great-souled one, among ascetics, of immeasurable energy, smiled.)
He, the all-knowing one, seeing Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena and Arjuna, and recalling Rāma in his mind, that great-souled ascetic of immeasurable energy smiled among the ascetics. (3-26-5)
तं धर्मराजो विमना इवाब्रवी; त्सर्वे ह्रिया सन्ति तपस्विनोऽमी। भवानिदं किं स्मयतीव हृष्ट; स्तपस्विनां पश्यतां मामुदीक्ष्य ॥३-२६-६॥
taṃ dharmarājo vimanā ivābravī; tsarve hriyā santi tapasvino'mī. bhavān idaṃ kiṃ smayatīva hṛṣṭa; stapasvināṃ paśyatāṃ māmudīkṣya ॥3-26-6॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - dispirited; इव (iva) - as if; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; सन्ति (santi) - are; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; अमी (amī) - these; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इदं (idaṃ) - this; किम् (kim) - why; स्मयतीव (smayatīva) - as if smiling; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - glad; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of ascetics; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - while seeing; माम् (mām) - me; उदीक्ष्य (udīkṣya) - having looked at;]
(Him Dharmarāja dispirited as if said; all with modesty are ascetics these. You this why as if smiling glad; of ascetics while seeing me having looked at.)
Dharmarāja, appearing dispirited, said to him: "All these ascetics are modest. Why do you seem glad and as if smiling, having looked at me in the presence of these ascetics?" (3-26-6)
मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

न तात हृष्यामि न च स्मयामि; प्रहर्षजो मां भजते न दर्पः। तवापदं त्वद्य समीक्ष्य रामं; सत्यव्रतं दाशरथिं स्मरामि ॥३-२६-७॥
na tāta hṛṣyāmi na ca smayāmi; praharṣajo māṃ bhajate na darpaḥ. tavāpadaṃ tvadya samīkṣya rāmaṃ; satyavrataṃ dāśarathiṃ smarāmi ॥3-26-7॥
[न (na) - not; तात (tāta) - O father; हृष्यामि (hṛṣyāmi) - I rejoice; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; स्मयामि (smayāmi) - I smile; प्रहर्षजः (praharṣajaḥ) - arising from great joy; माम् (mām) - me; भजते (bhajate) - possesses; न (na) - not; दर्पः (darpaḥ) - pride; तव (tava) - your; आपदं (āpadaṃ) - misfortune; त्वद्य (tvadya) - today; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having seen; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rama; सत्यव्रतम् (satyavratam) - one of true vow; दाशरथिम् (dāśarathim) - son of Dasharatha; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember;]
(Not, O father, I rejoice, not and I smile; arising from great joy me possesses not pride. Your misfortune today having seen Rama, one of true vow, son of Dasharatha, I remember.)
O father, I neither rejoice nor smile; no pride born of great joy possesses me. Seeing your misfortune today, I remember Rama, the son of Dasharatha, who is true to his vow. (3-26-7)
स चापि राजा सह लक्ष्मणेन; वने निवासं पितुरेव शासनात्। धन्वी चरन्पार्थ पुरा मयैव; दृष्टो गिरेरृष्यमूकस्य सानौ ॥३-२६-८॥
sa cāpi rājā saha lakṣmaṇena; vane nivāsaṃ pitureva śāsanāt। dhanvī caran pārtha purā mayaiva; dṛṣṭo girerṛṣyamūkasya sānau ॥3-26-8॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; राजा (rājā) - king; सह (saha) - with; लक्ष्मणेन (lakṣmaṇena) - by Lakṣmaṇa; वने (vane) - in the forest; निवासं (nivāsaṃ) - dwelling; पितुरेव (pitureva) - of the father only; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the command; धन्वी (dhanvī) - armed with a bow; चरन् (caran) - wandering; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; पुरा (purā) - formerly; मया (mayā) - by me; एव (eva) - indeed; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; ऋष्यमूकस्य (ṛṣyamūkasya) - of Ṛṣyamūka; सानौ (sānau) - on the summit;]
(He and also the king, with Lakṣmaṇa, in the forest dwelling by the command of the father only. Armed with a bow, wandering, O son of Pṛthā, formerly by me indeed seen on the summit of Ṛṣyamūka mountain.)
He, the king, together with Lakṣmaṇa, was dwelling in the forest solely by his father's command. O son of Pṛthā, I myself saw him earlier, armed with a bow and wandering, on the summit of the Ṛṣyamūka mountain. (3-26-8)
सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमो महात्मा; मयस्य जेत नमुचेश्च हन्ता। पितुर्निदेशादनघः स्वधर्मं; वने वासं दाशरथिश्चकार ॥३-२६-९॥
sahasranetrapratimo mahātmā; mayasya jeta namuceś ca hantā. pitur nideśād anaghaḥ svadharmaṃ; vane vāsaṃ dāśarathiś cakāra ॥3-26-9॥
[सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमः (sahasranetrapratimaḥ) - like Indra (thousand-eyed); महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; मयस्य (mayasya) - of Maya (the demon); जेत (jeta) - conqueror; नमुचेश्च (namuceś ca) - and of Namuci; हन्ता (hantā) - slayer; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; निदेशात् (nideśāt) - by the command; अनघः (anaghaḥ) - sinless; स्वधर्मं (svadharmaṃ) - own duty; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासं (vāsaṃ) - residence; दाशरथिः (dāśarathiḥ) - the son of Dasharatha; चकार (cakāra) - performed;]
(Like Indra (thousand-eyed), the great-souled; conqueror of Maya, and slayer of Namuci; by the command of (his) father, the sinless one, his own duty; in the forest, residence, the son of Dasharatha performed. ॥3-26-9॥)
The great-souled son of Dasharatha, like Indra, conqueror of Maya and slayer of Namuci, sinless, performed his own duty by residing in the forest as commanded by his father. (3-26-9)
स चापि शक्रस्य समप्रभावो; महानुभावः समरेष्वजेयः। विहाय भोगानचरद्वनेषु; नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-१०॥
sa cāpi śakrasya samaprabhāvo; mahānubhāvaḥ samareṣv ajeyaḥ. vihāya bhogān acarad vaneṣu; neśe balasyeti cared adharmaṃ ॥3-26-10॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); समप्रभावः (samaprabhāvaḥ) - equal in power; महानुभावः (mahānubhāvaḥ) - of great dignity; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; अजेयः (ajeyaḥ) - invincible; विहाय (vihāya) - having abandoned; भोगान् (bhogān) - pleasures; अचरत् (acarat) - wandered; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in forests; नेशे (neśe) - did not rule; बलस्य (balasya) - of the army; इति (iti) - thus; चरेत् (caret) - should act; अधर्मम् (adharmaṃ) - unrighteousness;]
(He and also, of Śakra, equal in power; of great dignity, in battles invincible. Having abandoned pleasures, wandered in forests; did not rule the army, thus should act unrighteousness. (3-26-10))
He too, equal in power to Śakra (Indra), of great dignity and invincible in battle, having abandoned pleasures, wandered in the forests; he did not command the army, thus he would not act unrighteously. (3-26-10)
नृपाश्च नाभागभगीरथादयो; महीमिमां सागरान्तां विजित्य। सत्येन तेऽप्यजयंस्तात लोका; न्नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-११॥
nṛpāś ca nābhāgabhagīrathādayo; mahīm imāṃ sāgarāntāṃ vijitya. satyena te'py ajayaṃs tāta lokān neśe balasyeti cared adharmaṃ ॥3-26-11॥
[नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; नाभागभगीरथादयः (nābhāgabhagīrathādayaḥ) - Nābhāga, Bhagīratha and others; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; सागरान्ताम् (sāgarāntām) - bounded by the ocean; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; अजयन् (ajayan) - conquered; तात (tāta) - O dear one; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; न (na) - not; ईशे (īśe) - is master; बलस्य (balasya) - of strength; इति (iti) - thus; चरेत् (caret) - should act; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness;]
(Kings and Nābhāga, Bhagīratha and others, having conquered this earth bounded by the ocean, by truth they also conquered the worlds, O dear one; not is master of strength thus should act unrighteousness.)

अलर्कमाहुर्नरवर्य सन्तं; सत्यव्रतं काशिकरूषराजम्। विहाय राष्ट्राणि वसूनि चैव; नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-१२॥
alarkam āhur naravarya santaṃ; satyavrataṃ kāśikarūṣarājam। vihāya rāṣṭrāṇi vasūni caiva; neśe balasyeti cared adharmaṃ ॥3-26-12॥
[अलर्कम् (alarkam) - Alarka; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; नरवर्य (naravarya) - best of men; सन्तं (santaṃ) - virtuous; सत्यव्रतम् (satyavratam) - truthful in vow; काशिकरूषराजम् (kāśikarūṣarājam) - king of Kāśi and Karūṣa; विहाय (vihāya) - abandoning; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; वसूनि (vasūni) - riches; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नेशे (neśe) - he could not control; बलस्य (balasya) - of strength; इति (iti) - thus; चरेत् (cared) - he would act; अधर्मम् (adharmaṃ) - unrighteousness;]
(Alarka they call best of men, virtuous, truthful in vow, king of Kāśi and Karūṣa; abandoning kingdoms and riches indeed; he could not control strength, thus he would act unrighteousness.)

धात्रा विधिर्यो विहितः पुराण; स्तं पूजयन्तो नरवर्य सन्तः। सप्तर्षयः पार्थ दिवि प्रभान्ति; नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-१३॥
dhātrā vidhiryo vihitaḥ purāṇa; staṃ pūjayanto naravarya santaḥ. saptarṣayaḥ pārtha divi prabhānti; neśe balasyeti caredadharmam ॥3-26-13॥
[धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the Creator; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule; यः (yaḥ) - which; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - established; पुराण (purāṇa) - ancient; स्तं (staṃ) - that; पूजयन्तः (pūjayantaḥ) - worshipping; नरवर्य (naravarya) - best of men; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous; सप्तर्षयः (saptarṣayaḥ) - the seven sages; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; प्रभान्ति (prabhānti) - shine; नेशे (neśe) - in the absence of a ruler; बलस्य (balasya) - of strength; इति (iti) - thus; चरेत् (caret) - one should act; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness;]
(By the Creator, the rule which is established, ancient; that worshipping, O best of men, the virtuous; the seven sages, O Pārtha, in heaven shine; in the absence of a ruler, of strength, thus, one should act unrighteously.)
O Pārtha, the rule established by the Creator in ancient times is worshipped by the virtuous best of men; the seven sages shine in heaven. In the absence of a ruler, strength prevails, and thus people act unrighteously. (3-26-13)
महाबलान्पर्वतकूटमात्रा; न्विषाणिनः पश्य गजान्नरेन्द्र। स्थितान्निदेशे नरवर्य धातु; र्नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-१४॥
mahābalān parvatakūṭamātrān viṣāṇinaḥ paśya gajān narendra। sthitān nideśe naravarya dhātūn neśe balasya iti caret adharmaṃ ॥3-26-14॥
[महाबलान् (mahābalān) - great-strength; पर्वतकूटमात्रान् (parvatakūṭamātrān) - mountain-peak-sized; विषाणिनः (viṣāṇinaḥ) - tusked; पश्य (paśya) - see; गजान् (gajān) - elephants; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; निदेशे (nideśe) - at command; नरवर्य (naravarya) - O best of men; धातून् (dhātūn) - elements; नेशे (neśe) - in control; बलस्य (balasya) - of strength; इति (iti) - thus; चरेत् (caret) - should act; अधर्मम् (adharmaṃ) - unrighteousness;]
(Great-strength mountain-peak-sized tusked see elephants O king; standing at command O best of men; elements in control of strength thus should act unrighteousness.)
O king, see those tusked elephants of great strength and mountain-peak size; O best of men, standing at command, the elements under control of strength—thus, one should not act unrighteously. (3-26-14)
सर्वाणि भूतानि नरेन्द्र पश्य; यथा यथावद्विहितं विधात्रा। स्वयोनितस्तत्कुरुते प्रभावा; न्नेशे बलस्येति चरेदधर्मम् ॥३-२६-१५॥

(All beings, O king, see; as properly ordained by the Creator. One born from himself does that action of power; not is master of strength, thus should act unrighteousness. (3-26-15))
O king, see all beings; as ordained by the Creator, each acts according to their own nature. One who is self-born performs those powerful deeds; not being the master of strength, thus one should not act unrighteously. (3-26-15)
सत्येन धर्मेण यथार्हवृत्त्या; ह्रिया तथा सर्वभूतान्यतीत्य। यशश्च तेजश्च तवापि दीप्तं; विभावसोर्भास्करस्येव पार्थ ॥३-२६-१६॥
satyena dharmeṇa yathārhavṛttyā; hriyā tathā sarvabhūtānyatītya। yaśaś ca tejaś ca tavāpi dīptaṃ; vibhāvasor bhāskarasy eva pārtha ॥3-26-16॥
[सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; यथार्हवृत्त्या (yathārhavṛttyā) - by conduct as is proper; ह्रिया (hriyā) - by modesty; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; अतीत्य (atītya) - having surpassed; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; दीप्तं (dīptam) - shining; विभावसोर् (vibhāvasoḥ) - of fire; भास्करस्य (bhāskarasyā) - of the sun; इव (iva) - like; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha;]
(By truth, by righteousness, by conduct as is proper, by modesty, thus having surpassed all beings; fame and splendor, your also shining, like of fire, of the sun, O Pārtha.)
O Pārtha, by truth, righteousness, proper conduct, and modesty, you have surpassed all beings; your fame and splendor shine like that of fire and the sun. (3-26-16)
यथाप्रतिज्ञं च महानुभाव; कृच्छ्रं वने वासमिमं निरुष्य। ततः श्रियं तेजसा स्वेन दीप्ता; मादास्यसे पार्थिव कौरवेभ्यः ॥३-२६-१७॥
yathāpratijñaṃ ca mahānubhāva; kṛcchraṃ vane vāsam imaṃ niruṣya. tataḥ śriyaṃ tejasā svena dīptā; mādāsyase pārthiva kauravebhyaḥ ॥3-26-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in accordance with; प्रतिज्ञं (pratijñam) - promise; vow; च (ca) - and; महानुभाव (mahānubhāva) - O great one; कृच्छ्रं (kṛcchram) - difficulty; hardship; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासम् (vāsam) - residence; dwelling; इमं (imaṃ) - this; निरुष्य (niruṣya) - having endured; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; wealth; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; by energy; स्वेन (svena) - by your own; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - shining; radiant; मादास्यसे (mādāsyase) - you will obtain; you will get; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; कौरवेभ्यः (kauravebhyaḥ) - from the Kauravas;]
(As promised and O great one, having endured this hardship of residence in the forest, then you will obtain prosperity shining by your own brilliance, O king, from the Kauravas.)
O great one, as you have promised, after enduring this difficult stay in the forest, you will then, by your own brilliance, obtain radiant prosperity from the Kauravas, O king. (3-26-17)

तमेवमुक्त्वा वचनं महर्षि; स्तपस्विमध्ये सहितं सुहृद्भिः। आमन्त्र्य धौम्यं सहितांश्च पार्थां; स्ततः प्रतस्थे दिशमुत्तरां सः ॥३-२६-१८॥
tamevam uktvā vacanaṃ maharṣi; tapasyimadhye sahitaṃ suhṛdbhiḥ. āmantrya dhaumyaṃ sahitāṃś ca pārthān; tataḥ pratasthe diśam uttarāṃ saḥ ॥3-26-18॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; तपस्वि-मध्ये (tapasi-madhye) - in the midst of ascetics; सहितम् (sahitam) - together; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - with friends; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having bidden farewell; धौम्यम् (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; सहितान् (sahitān) - together; च (ca) - and; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रतस्थे (pratasthe) - set out; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; उत्तराम् (uttarām) - northern; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Him thus having spoken speech great sage in the midst of ascetics together with friends; having bidden farewell to Dhaumya and the sons of Pṛthā together; then set out direction northern he.)
Having thus spoken to him, the great sage, in the midst of ascetics and together with friends, after bidding farewell to Dhaumya and the sons of Pṛthā, then he set out towards the northern direction. (3-26-18)
