Vaiśampāyana said.
वसत्स्वथ द्वैतवने पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। अनुकीर्णं महारण्यं ब्राह्मणैः समपद्यत ॥३-२७-१॥
vasatsvatha dvaitavane pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। anukīrṇaṃ mahāraṇyaṃ brāhmaṇaiḥ samapadyata ॥3-27-1॥
[वसत्सु (vasatsu) - while dwelling; (locative plural of vasat, to dwell); अथ (atha) - then; (now, at that time); द्वैतवने (dvaitavane) - in the Dvaita forest; (locative singular); पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; (locative plural); महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great-souled; (locative plural); अनुकीर्णं (anukīrṇaṃ) - covered with; (past participle of anu+kṛ, to scatter over); महारण्यं (mahāraṇyaṃ) - great forest; (accusative singular); ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; (instrumental plural); समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; (imperfect, 3rd person singular, sam+pad, to become);]
(While the great-souled Pāṇḍavas were dwelling in the Dvaita forest, the great forest became covered with Brāhmaṇas.)
When the great-souled Pāṇḍavas were living in the Dvaita forest, the vast forest became filled with Brāhmaṇas. (3-27-1)
ईर्यमाणेन सततं ब्रह्मघोषेण सर्वतः। ब्रह्मलोकसमं पुण्यमासीद्द्वैतवनं सरः ॥३-२७-२॥
īryamāṇena satataṃ brahmaghoṣeṇa sarvataḥ। brahmalokasamaṃ puṇyam āsīd dvaitavanaṃ saraḥ॥3-27-2॥
[ईर्यमाणेन (īryamāṇena) - being moved; by the one going; by the one proceeding; सततम् (satatam) - always; continuously; ब्रह्मघोषेण (brahmaghoṣeṇa) - with the sound of Brahman; with the sacred chant; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; everywhere; ब्रह्मलोकसमम् (brahmalokasamam) - equal to Brahma-loka; like the world of Brahman; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; auspicious; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; existed; द्वैतवनम् (dvaitavanam) - Dwaita forest; the forest named Dwaita; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; pond;]
(By the one proceeding, always, with the sound of Brahman, on all sides, equal to Brahma-loka, holy, was the Dwaita forest lake.)
As it was being traversed, the Dwaita forest lake, always resounding with the sacred chant of Brahman on all sides, was as holy as Brahma-loka. (3-27-2)
यजुषामृचां च साम्नां च गद्यानां चैव सर्वशः। आसीदुच्चार्यमाणानां निस्वनो हृदयङ्गमः ॥३-२७-३॥
yajuṣām ṛcām ca sāmnām ca gadyānām caiva sarvaśaḥ। āsīd uccāryamāṇānām nisvano hṛdayaṅgamaḥ ॥3-27-3॥
[यजुषाम् (yajuṣām) - of Yajus verses; ऋचाम् (ṛcām) - of Ṛc (Rig) verses; च (ca) - and; साम्नाम् (sāmnām) - of Sāman (Sāma) chants; च (ca) - and; गद्यानाम् (gadyānām) - of prose passages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in all ways; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; उच्चार्यमाणानाम् (uccāryamāṇānām) - of those being uttered; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - resonance; हृदयङ्गमः (hṛdayaṅgamaḥ) - touching the heart;]
(Of Yajus verses, of Ṛc verses, and of Sāman chants, and of prose passages indeed in all ways; there was, of those being uttered, a resonance touching the heart.)
The recitation of the Yajus, Ṛc, Sāman, and all prose passages produced a resonance, as they were uttered, that touched the heart. (3-27-3)
ज्याघोषः पाण्डवेयानां ब्रह्मघोषश्च धीमताम्। संसृष्टं ब्रह्मणा क्षत्रं भूय एव व्यरोचत ॥३-२७-४॥
jyāghoṣaḥ pāṇḍaveyānāṃ brahmaghoṣaś ca dhīmatām। saṃsṛṣṭaṃ brahmaṇā kṣatraṃ bhūya eva vyarocata ॥3-27-4॥
[ज्याघोषः (jyāghoṣaḥ) - twang-sound; (of the bowstring); पाण्डवेयानां (pāṇḍaveyānāṃ) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; ब्रह्मघोषः (brahmaghoṣaḥ) - chant-sound; (of Vedic hymns); च (ca) - and; धीमताम् (dhīmatām) - of the wise; संसृष्टं (saṃsṛṣṭam) - mingled; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with the Brāhmaṇa; (priestly power); क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - Kṣatriya; (warrior power); भूय (bhūya) - more; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यरोचत (vyarocata) - shone forth;]
(The twang-sound of the sons of Pāṇḍu and the chant-sound of the wise, mingled, with the Brāhmaṇa and the Kṣatriya, more indeed shone forth.)
The twang of the bows of the sons of Pāṇḍu and the chanting of the wise blended together; the combined power of the Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas shone forth even more. (3-27-4)
अथाब्रवीद्बको दाल्भ्यो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम्। सन्ध्यां कौन्तेयमासीनमृषिभिः परिवारितम् ॥३-२७-५॥
athābravīdbako dālbhyō dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। sandhyāṃ kaunteyam āsīnam ṛṣibhiḥ parivāritam ॥3-27-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; बकः (bakaḥ) - Baka (the sage); दाल्भ्यः (dālbhyaḥ) - Dalbhya (the sage); धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja (the king of dharma); युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - at twilight; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - Kaunteya (son of Kunti); आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; परिवारितम् (parivāritam) - surrounded;]
(Then Baka Dalbhya spoke to Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, Kaunteya, sitting at twilight, surrounded by sages.)
Then Baka Dalbhya addressed Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, who was seated at twilight and surrounded by sages. (3-27-5)
पश्य द्वैतवने पार्थ ब्राह्मणानां तपस्विनाम्। होमवेलां कुरुश्रेष्ठ सम्प्रज्वलितपावकाम् ॥३-२७-६॥
paśya dvaitavane pārtha brāhmaṇānāṃ tapasvinām। homavelāṃ kuruśreṣṭha samprajvalitapāvakām ॥3-27-6॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; द्वैतवने (dvaitavane) - in the Dvaita forest; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṃ) - of the Brāhmaṇas; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of the ascetics; होमवेलां (homavelāṃ) - the time of the oblation; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; सम्प्रज्वलितपावकाम् (samprajvalitapāvakām) - with blazing fire;]

O Partha, see in the Dvaita forest the ascetic Brāhmaṇas at the time of their oblation, O best of the Kurus, with the fire blazing. (3-27-6)
चरन्ति धर्मं पुण्येऽस्मिंस्त्वया गुप्ता धृतव्रताः। भृगवोऽङ्गिरसश्चैव वासिष्ठाः काश्यपैः सह ॥३-२७-७॥
caranti dharmaṃ puṇye'smiṃstvayā guptā dhṛtavratāḥ। bhṛgavo'ṅgirasaścaiva vāsiṣṭhāḥ kāśyapaiḥ saha ॥3-27-7॥
[चरन्ति (caranti) - move; act; practice; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; पुण्ये (puṇye) - in the holy; in the meritorious; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; गुप्ता (guptā) - protected; धृतव्रताः (dhṛtavratāḥ) - firm in vows; steadfast in vows; भृगवः (bhṛgavaḥ) - the Bhṛgus; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - the Aṅgirasas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; also; वासिष्ठाः (vāsiṣṭhāḥ) - the Vāsiṣṭhas; काश्यपैः (kāśyapaiḥ) - with the Kāśyapas; सह (saha) - together with;]
(Move dharma in the holy in this by you protected firm in vows the Bhṛgus the Aṅgirasas and indeed the Vāsiṣṭhas with the Kāśyapas together with.)
The Bhṛgus, Aṅgirasas, and Vāsiṣṭhas, together with the Kāśyapas, who are steadfast in their vows and protected by you, practice dharma in this holy place. (3-27-7)
आगस्त्याश्च महाभागा आत्रेयाश्चोत्तमव्रताः। सर्वस्य जगतः श्रेष्ठा ब्राह्मणाः सङ्गतास्त्वया ॥३-२७-८॥
āgastyāś ca mahābhāgā ātreyāś cottamavratāḥ। sarvasya jagataḥ śreṣṭhā brāhmaṇāḥ saṅgatās tvayā ॥3-27-8॥
[आगस्त्याः (āgastyāḥ) - descendants of Agastya; च (ca) - and; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate ones; आत्रेयाः (ātreyāḥ) - descendants of Atri; च (ca) - and; उत्तमव्रताः (uttamavratāḥ) - of excellent vows; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - the best; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - assembled; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Descendants of Agastya and greatly fortunate ones, descendants of Atri and of excellent vows, of all the world the best brāhmaṇas assembled by you.)
The most fortunate descendants of Agastya and the excellent-vowed descendants of Atri, the best brāhmaṇas in the world, have all assembled here by you. (3-27-8)
इदं तु वचनं पार्थ शृण्वेकाग्रमना मम। भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेय यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि कौरव ॥३-२७-९॥
idaṃ tu vacanaṃ pārtha śṛṇvekāgramanā mama। bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteya yat tvāṃ vakṣyāmi kaurava ॥3-27-9॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; एकाग्रमना (ekāgramanā) - with concentrated mind; मम (mama) - my; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; यत् (yat) - which; त्वां (tvām) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; कौरव (kaurava) - O descendant of Kuru;]
(But this speech, O son of Pṛthā, hear with concentrated mind from me. Together with your brothers, O son of Kuntī, which I shall speak to you, O descendant of Kuru.)
But listen attentively to this speech of mine, O son of Pṛthā, along with your brothers, O son of Kuntī, which I am about to tell you, O descendant of Kuru. (3-27-9)
ब्रह्म क्षत्रेण संसृष्टं क्षत्रं च ब्रह्मणा सह। उदीर्णौ दहतः शत्रून्वनानीवाग्निमारुतौ ॥३-२७-१०॥
brahma kṣatreṇa saṁsṛṣṭaṁ kṣatraṁ ca brahmaṇā saha। udīrṇau dahataḥ śatrūn vanān iva agni-mārutau ॥3-27-10॥
[ब्रह्म (brahma) - the priestly power; क्षत्रेण (kṣatreṇa) - by the warrior power; संसृष्टं (saṁsṛṣṭam) - combined; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - the warrior power; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with the priestly power; सह (saha) - together; उदीर्णौ (udīrṇau) - risen up; दहतः (dahataḥ) - burning; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; इव (iva) - like; अग्नि (agni) - fire; मारुतौ (mārutau) - and wind;]
(The priestly power, combined with the warrior power, and the warrior power together with the priestly power, risen up, burning enemies like fire and wind (burn) forests.)
When priestly and warrior powers are united, and both rise up together, they burn their enemies like fire and wind burn forests. (3-27-10)
नाब्राह्मणस्तात चिरं बुभूषे; दिच्छन्निमं लोकममुं च जेतुम्। विनीतधर्मार्थमपेतमोहं; लब्ध्वा द्विजं नुदति नृपः सपत्नान् ॥३-२७-११॥
nābrāhmaṇastāta ciraṃ bubhūṣe; dicchannimaṃ lokamamuṃ ca jetum। vinītadharmārthamapetamoham; labdhvā dvijaṃ nudati nṛpaḥ sapatnān ॥3-27-11॥
[न (na) - not; अब्राह्मणः (abrāhmaṇaḥ) - non-brāhmaṇa; तात (tāta) - O dear; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; बुभूषे (bubhūṣe) - desires; दिच्छन् (dicchan) - desiring; इमम् (imam) - this; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अमुम् (amum) - that; च (ca) - and; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; विनीतधर्मार्थम् (vinīta-dharmārtham) - trained in dharma and artha; अपेतमोहम् (apeta-moham) - free from delusion; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; द्विजम् (dvijam) - brāhmaṇa; नुदति (nudati) - drives away; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; सपत्नान् (sapatnān) - rivals;]
(Not a non-brāhmaṇa, O dear, for long desires; desiring to conquer this world and that; having obtained a brāhmaṇa trained in dharma and artha, free from delusion; the king drives away rivals.)
O dear, a non-brāhmaṇa does not long endure who desires to conquer both this world and the next; but a king, having obtained a brāhmaṇa who is trained in dharma and artha and free from delusion, drives away his rivals. (3-27-11)
चरन्नैःश्रेयसं धर्मं प्रजापालनकारितम्। नाध्यगच्छद्बलिर्लोके तीर्थमन्यत्र वै द्विजात् ॥३-२७-१२॥
carannaiḥśreyasaṃ dharmaṃ prajāpālanakāritam। nādhyagacchadbalirloke tīrthamanyatra vai dvijāt ॥3-27-12॥
[चरन् (caran) - moving; going; ऐःश्रेयसं (aiḥśreyasam) - leading to the highest good; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; righteousness; प्रजापालनकारितम् (prajāpālanakāritam) - caused by the protection of subjects; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - attained; reached; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali; (the king's name); लोके (loke) - in the world; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - holy place; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; द्विजात् (dvijāt) - from a Brāhmaṇa;]
(Moving in the highest good duty caused by the protection of subjects, Bali did not attain in the world a holy place elsewhere indeed than from a Brāhmaṇa.)
While following the supreme duty arising from protecting his subjects, Bali did not find in the world any holy place greater than that which comes from a Brāhmaṇa. (3-27-12)
अनूनमासीदसुरस्य कामै; र्वैरोचनेः श्रीरपि चाक्षयासीत्। लब्ध्वा महीं ब्राह्मणसम्प्रयोगा; त्तेष्वाचरन्दुष्टमतो व्यनश्यत् ॥३-२७-१३॥
anūnam āsīd asurasya kāmaiḥ; vairocaneḥ śrīr api ca akṣayā āsīt. labdhvā mahīm brāhmaṇa-samprayogāt; teṣu ācaran duṣṭam ataḥ vyanaśyat ॥3-27-13॥
[अनूनम् (anūnam) - not deficient; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; असुरस्य (asurasya) - of the asura; कामैः (kāmaiḥ) - in enjoyments; वैरोचनेः (vairocaneḥ) - of Virocana's son; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अक्षया (akṣayā) - undiminished; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; ब्राह्मणसम्प्रयोगात् (brāhmaṇa-samprayogāt) - by association with a Brāhmaṇa; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; आचरन् (ācaran) - acting; दुष्टम् (duṣṭam) - wickedness; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; वयनश्यत् (vyanaśyat) - perished;]
(Not deficient was the asura in enjoyments; of Virocana's son, prosperity also and undiminished was. Having obtained the earth by association with a Brāhmaṇa, among them, acting wickedness, therefore, perished.)
The asura was not lacking in enjoyments; the prosperity of Virocana's son was also undiminished. Having obtained the earth through association with a Brāhmaṇa, when they acted wickedly among themselves, therefore, they perished. (3-27-13)
नाब्राह्मणं भूमिरियं सभूति; र्वर्णं द्वितीयं भजते चिराय। समुद्रनेमिर्नमते तु तस्मै; यं ब्राह्मणः शास्ति नयैर्विनीतः ॥३-२७-१४॥
nābrāhmaṇaṃ bhūmir iyaṃ sabhūti; rvarṇaṃ dvitīyaṃ bhajate cirāya. samudranemir namate tu tasmai; yaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ śāsti nayair vinītaḥ ॥3-27-14॥
[न (na) - not; अब्राह्मणम् (abrāhmaṇam) - non-brāhmaṇa; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; इयम् (iyam) - this; सभूति (sabhūti) - with existence; र्वर्णम् (rvarṇam) - other class; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - second; भजते (bhajate) - enjoys; चिराय (cirāya) - for long; समुद्रनेमिः (samudranemiḥ) - the ocean-rim; नमते (namate) - bows; तु (tu) - but; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; यम् (yam) - whom; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; शास्ति (śāsti) - teaches; नयैः (nayaiḥ) - by means; विनीतः (vinītaḥ) - disciplined;]
(Not a non-brāhmaṇa does this earth with existence enjoy for long; the ocean-rim bows but to him whom a brāhmaṇa, disciplined by means, teaches.)
This earth, with all its riches, does not long belong to a non-brāhmaṇa; it is the other class that enjoys it for a long time. The ocean's rim bows only to him whom a brāhmaṇa, disciplined in conduct, instructs. (3-27-14)
कुञ्जरस्येव सङ्ग्रामेऽपरिगृह्याङ्कुशग्रहम्। ब्राह्मणैर्विप्रहीणस्य क्षत्रस्य क्षीयते बलम् ॥३-२७-१५॥
kuñjarasyeva saṅgrāme'parigṛhyāṅkuśagraham। brāhmaṇairviprahīṇasya kṣatrasya kṣīyate balam ॥3-27-15॥
[कुञ्जरस्य (kuñjarasya) - of an elephant; इव (iva) - like; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; अपरिगृह्य (aparigṛhya) - not having seized; अङ्कुशग्रहम् (aṅkuśagraham) - the goad-handle; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; विप्रहीणस्य (viprahīṇasya) - bereft of Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रस्य (kṣatrasya) - of the Kṣatriya; क्षीयते (kṣīyate) - is diminished; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(Of an elephant, like, in battle, not having seized, the goad-handle, by Brāhmaṇas, bereft of Brāhmaṇas, of the Kṣatriya, is diminished, strength.)
Just as the strength of an elephant in battle is diminished if the goad-handle is not seized, so too the strength of a Kṣatriya bereft of Brāhmaṇas is diminished. (3-27-15)
ब्रह्मण्यनुपमा दृष्टिः क्षात्रमप्रतिमं बलम्। तौ यदा चरतः सार्धमथ लोकः प्रसीदति ॥३-२७-१६॥
brahmaṇyanupamā dṛṣṭiḥ kṣātramapratimaṃ balam। tau yadā carataḥ sārdhamatha lokaḥ prasīdati ॥3-27-16॥
[ब्रह्मण्य (brahmaṇya) - devoted to Brahman; अनुपमा (anupamā) - incomparable; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ) - vision; क्षात्रम् (kṣātram) - of kṣatriya (warrior); अप्रतिमं (apratimaṃ) - unrivaled; बलम् (balam) - strength; तौ (tau) - those two; यदा (yadā) - when; चरतः (carataḥ) - move about; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; अथ (atha) - then; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; प्रसीदति (prasīdati) - becomes pleased;]
(Devoted to Brahman, incomparable vision; kṣatriya unrivaled strength; those two when move about together with, then the world becomes pleased.)
When those two, endowed with devotion to Brahman and incomparable vision, and possessing unrivaled kṣatriya strength, move about together, then the world becomes pleased. (3-27-16)
यथा हि सुमहानग्निः कक्षं दहति सानिलः। तथा दहति राजन्यो ब्राह्मणेन समं रिपून् ॥३-२७-१७॥
yathā hi sumahānagniḥ kakṣaṃ dahati sānilaḥ। tathā dahati rājanyo brāhmaṇena samaṃ ripūn ॥3-27-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; कक्षं (kakṣam) - dry wood; दहति (dahati) - burns; स (sa) - with; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind; तथा (tathā) - so; दहति (dahati) - burns; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - kṣatriya; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - with a brāhmaṇa; समं (samaṃ) - together; रिपून् (ripūn) - enemies;]
(Just as indeed a very great fire burns dry wood with wind, so burns the kṣatriya with a brāhmaṇa together (their) enemies.)
Just as a very great fire, aided by the wind, burns dry wood, so too does a kṣatriya, together with a brāhmaṇa, destroy his enemies. (3-27-17)
ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽथ मेधावी बुद्धिपर्येषणं चरेत्। अलब्धस्य च लाभाय लब्धस्य च विवृद्धये ॥३-२७-१८॥
brāhmaṇebhyo'tha medhāvī buddhiparyeṣaṇaṃ caret। alabdhāsya ca lābhāya labdhasya ca vivṛddhaye ॥3-27-18॥
[ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; अथ (atha) - then; मेधावी (medhāvī) - the intelligent one; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; पर्येषणम् (paryeṣaṇam) - searching; चरेत् (caret) - should undertake; अलब्धस्य (alabdhāsya) - of what is not obtained; च (ca) - and; लाभाय (lābhāya) - for obtaining; लब्धस्य (labdhasya) - of what is obtained; च (ca) - and; विवृद्धये (vivṛddhaye) - for increase;]
(To the Brāhmaṇas, then, the intelligent one should undertake the search of intellect; for obtaining what is not obtained, and for the increase of what is obtained.)
Then, for the Brāhmaṇas, the intelligent person should pursue intellectual inquiry; so that what has not been gained may be obtained, and what has been gained may be increased. (3-27-18)
अलब्धलाभाय च लब्धवृद्धये; यथार्हतीर्थप्रतिपादनाय। यशस्विनं वेदविदं विपश्चितं; बहुश्रुतं ब्राह्मणमेव वासय ॥३-२७-१९॥
alabdhalābhāya ca labdhavṛddhaye; yathārhatīrthapratipādanāya. yaśasvinaṃ vedavidaṃ vipaścitaṃ; bahuśrutaṃ brāhmaṇameva vāsaya ॥3-27-19॥
[अलब्धलाभाय (alabdhalābhāya) - for one who has not obtained gain; च (ca) - and; लब्धवृद्धये (labdhavṛddhaye) - for one whose gain has increased; यथार्ह (yathārha) - as is fitting; तीर्थप्रतिपादनाय (tīrthapratipādanāya) - for the establishment of sacred places; यशस्विनं (yaśasvinam) - glorious; वेदविदं (vedavidam) - knower of the Veda; विपश्चितं (vipaścitam) - wise; बहुश्रुतं (bahuśrutam) - much-heard; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - brāhmaṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; वासय (vāsaya) - cause to dwell;]
(For one who has not obtained gain and for one whose gain has increased; for the establishment of sacred places as is fitting. Cause to dwell a glorious, Veda-knowing, wise, much-heard brāhmaṇa indeed.)
For those who have not obtained gain and for those whose gain has increased, and for the proper establishment of sacred places, cause to reside a glorious, Veda-knowing, wise, and well-learned brāhmaṇa. (3-27-19)
ब्राह्मणेषूत्तमा वृत्तिस्तव नित्यं युधिष्ठिर। तेन ते सर्वलोकेषु दीप्यते प्रथितं यशः ॥३-२७-२०॥
brāhmaṇeṣūttamā vṛttis tava nityaṃ yudhiṣṭhira। tena te sarvalokeṣu dīpyate prathitaṃ yaśaḥ ॥3-27-20॥
[ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; उत्तमा (uttamā) - excellent; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; तव (tava) - your; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; तेन (tena) - by that; ते (te) - your; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; दीप्यते (dīpyate) - is illuminated; प्रथितं (prathitaṃ) - famed; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(Among Brāhmaṇas, excellent conduct your always, O Yudhiṣṭhira; by that, your in all worlds is illuminated famed fame.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, your conduct is always excellent among Brāhmaṇas; by that, your renowned fame shines in all worlds. (3-27-20)
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे बकं दाल्भ्यमपूजयन्। युधिष्ठिरे स्तूयमाने भूयः सुमनसोऽभवन् ॥३-२७-२१॥
tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve bakaṃ dāl'bhyam apūjayan। yudhiṣṭhire stūyamāne bhūyaḥ sumanaso'bhavan ॥3-27-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; बकं (bakaṃ) - Baka; दाल्भ्यम् (dāl'bhyam) - Dalbhya; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - honored; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - when Yudhiṣṭhira; स्तूयमाने (stūyamāne) - being praised; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; सुमनसः (sumanasaḥ) - happy-minded; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(Then they Brāhmaṇas all Baka Dalbhya honored. When Yudhiṣṭhira being praised again happy-minded became.)
Then all those Brāhmaṇas honored Baka Dalbhya. While Yudhiṣṭhira was being praised, they again became happy-minded. (3-27-21)
द्वैपायनो नारदश्च जामदग्न्यः पृथुश्रवाः। इन्द्रद्युम्नो भालुकिश्च कृतचेताः सहस्रपात् ॥३-२७-२२॥
dvaipāyano nāradaś ca jāmadagnyaḥ pṛthuśravāḥ। indradyumno bhālukiś ca kṛtacetāḥ sahasrapāt ॥3-27-22॥

कर्णश्रवाश्च मुञ्जश्च लवणाश्वश्च काश्यपः। हारीतः स्थूणकर्णश्च अग्निवेश्योऽथ शौनकः ॥३-२७-२३॥
karṇaśravāś ca muñjaś ca lavaṇāśvaś ca kāśyapaḥ। hārītaḥ sthūṇakarṇaś ca agniveśyo 'tha śaunakaḥ॥3-27-23॥

Bṛhadaśva, Ṛtāvasu, Vṛṣāmitra, Suhotra, and Hotravāhana were all known for their truthful and virtuous speech; among them was also one whose seed was upward. (3-27-24)
एते चान्ये च बहवो ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः। अजातशत्रुमानर्चुः पुरंदरमिवर्षयः ॥३-२७-२५॥
ete cānye ca bahavo brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ। ajātaśatrum ānarcuḥ puraṃdaram iva ṛṣayaḥ ॥3-27-25॥
[एते (ete) - these; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm-in-vows; अजातशत्रुम् (ajātaśatrum) - Ajātaśatru; अनर्चुः (ānarcuḥ) - worshipped; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Purandara; इव (iva) - like; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages;]
(These and other many Brāhmaṇas firm-in-vows worshipped Ajātaśatru, like sages (worship) Purandara.)
