Pancharatra: Arjuna travels to the north in a day and meets Indra.

कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। संस्मृत्य मुनिसंदेशमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३-३८-१॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। saṁsmṛtya munisaṁdeśam idaṁ vacanam abravīt ॥3-38-1॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; त् (t) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; संस्मृत्य (saṁsmṛtya) - having remembered; मुनिसंदेशम् (munisaṁdeśam) - sage's message; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Of someone indeed then of time Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, having remembered the sage's message, this speech spoke.)
At a certain time, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, recalling the sage's message, spoke these words. (3-38-1)
विविक्ते विदितप्रज्ञमर्जुनं भरतर्षभम्। सान्त्वपूर्वं स्मितं कृत्वा पाणिना परिसंस्पृशन् ॥३-३८-२॥
vivikte viditaprajñamarjunaṃ bharatarṣabham। sāntvapūrvaṃ smitaṃ kṛtvā pāṇinā parisaṃspṛśan ॥3-38-2॥
[विविक्ते (vivikte) - in a secluded place; विदितप्रज्ञम् (viditaprajñam) - whose wisdom is known; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; भरतर्षभम् (bharatarṣabham) - bull among the Bharatas; सान्त्वपूर्वम् (sāntvapūrvam) - with gentle preface; स्मितम् (smitam) - smile; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with (his) hand; परिसंस्पृशन् (parisaṃspṛśan) - touching all around;]
(In a secluded place, to Arjuna whose wisdom is known, the bull among the Bharatas, with a gentle preface, having made a smile, touching (him) with (his) hand all around.)
In a secluded place, to Arjuna, the renowned wise one and foremost among the Bharatas, (he) gently smiled, touched him with his hand, and began to speak with soothing words. (3-38-2)
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा वनवासमरिंदमः। धनञ्जयं धर्मराजो रहसीदमुवाच ह ॥३-३८-३॥
sa muhūrtam iva dhyātvā vanavāsam ariṃdamaḥ। dhanañjayaṃ dharmarājo rahasīdam uvāca ha ॥3-38-3॥
[स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; इव (iva) - as if; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; वनवासम् (vanavāsam) - forest-dwelling; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - subduer of enemies; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; रहसि (rahasi) - in private; इदम् (idam) - this; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, having meditated as if for a moment on the forest-dwelling, the subduer of enemies, Dharmarāja, said this in private to Dhanañjaya indeed.)
He, the subduer of enemies, Dharmarāja, after contemplating the forest exile for a moment, spoke these words in private to Dhanañjaya. (3-38-3)
भीष्मे द्रोणे कृपे कर्णे द्रोणपुत्रे च भारत। धनुर्वेदश्चतुष्पाद एतेष्वद्य प्रतिष्ठितः ॥३-३८-४॥
bhīṣme droṇe kṛpe karṇe droṇaputre ca bhārata। dhanurvedaścatuṣpāda eteṣvadya pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥3-38-4॥
[भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - in Bhīṣma; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Droṇa; कृपे (kṛpe) - in Kṛpa; कर्णे (karṇe) - in Karṇa; द्रोणपुत्रे (droṇaputre) - in the son of Droṇa; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; धनुर्वेदः (dhanurvedaḥ) - the science of archery; चतुष्पात् (catuṣpāt) - four-footed; एतेषु (eteṣu) - in these; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - established;]
(In Bhīṣma, in Droṇa, in Kṛpa, in Karṇa, in the son of Droṇa, and, O Bhārata, the science of archery, four-footed, in these, today, is established.)
O Bhārata, today the fourfold science of archery is established in Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and the son of Droṇa. (3-38-4)
ब्राह्मं दैवमासुरं च सप्रयोगचिकित्सितम्। सर्वास्त्राणां प्रयोगं च तेऽभिजानन्ति कृत्स्नशः ॥३-३८-५॥
brāhmaṃ daivam āsuraṃ ca saprayogacikitsitam। sarvāstrāṇāṃ prayogaṃ ca te'bhijānanti kṛtsnaśaḥ ॥3-38-5॥
[ब्राह्मं (brāhmaṃ) - relating to Brahma; divine; sacred; दैवम् (daivam) - pertaining to the gods; celestial; आसुरम् (āsuram) - pertaining to asuras; demonic; च (ca) - and; सप्रयोगचिकित्सितम् (saprayogacikitsitam) - with application and treatment; with practical use and remedy; सर्वास्त्राणां (sarvāstrāṇāṃ) - of all weapons; प्रयोगं (prayogaṃ) - application; use; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; अभिजानन्ति (abhijānanti) - know thoroughly; recognize; कृत्स्नशः (kṛtsnaśaḥ) - completely; entirely;]
(Relating to Brahma, pertaining to the gods, pertaining to asuras, and with application and treatment; the application of all weapons and they know thoroughly completely.)
They know completely the Brahma, Daiva, and Asura (types of weapons), along with their application and treatment; they are thoroughly acquainted with the use of all weapons. (3-38-5)
ते सर्वे धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण परिसान्त्विताः। संविभक्ताश्च तुष्टाश्च गुरुवत्तेषु वर्तते ॥३-३८-६॥
te sarve dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putreṇa parisāntvitāḥ। saṃvibhaktāś ca tuṣṭāś ca guruvatteṣu vartate ॥3-38-6॥
[ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; परिसान्त्विताः (parisāntvitāḥ) - completely conciliated; संविभक्ताः (saṃvibhaktāḥ) - having been distributed (with gifts); च (ca) - and; तुष्टाः (tuṣṭāḥ) - satisfied; च (ca) - and; गुरुवत्तेषु (guruvatteṣu) - towards the elders; वर्तते (vartate) - conducts (himself);]
(They all, by Dhritarashtra's son, having been completely conciliated, having been distributed (with gifts), and satisfied, and towards the elders conducts (himself).)
All of them, having been completely conciliated, satisfied, and given gifts by Dhritarashtra's son, conduct themselves respectfully towards the elders. (3-38-6)
सर्वयोधेषु चैवास्य सदा वृत्तिरनुत्तमा। शक्तिं न हापयिष्यन्ति ते काले प्रतिपूजिताः ॥३-३८-७॥
sarvayodheṣu caiva asya sadā vṛttir anuttamā। śaktiṃ na hāpayiṣyanti te kāle pratipūjitāḥ॥3-38-7॥
[सर्वयोधेषु (sarvayodheṣu) - among all warriors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; सदा (sadā) - always; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; अनुत्तमा (anuttamā) - unsurpassed; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - power; न (na) - not; हापयिष्यन्ति (hāpayiṣyanti) - will cause to be lost; ते (te) - they; काले (kāle) - in time; प्रतिपूजिताः (pratipūjitāḥ) - having been duly honored;]
(Among all warriors and indeed his conduct always unsurpassed; his power not will cause to be lost they in time having been duly honored.)
Among all warriors, his conduct is always unsurpassed; those who have been duly honored will not cause his power to be lost in time. (3-38-7)
अद्य चेयं मही कृत्स्ना दुर्योधनवशानुगा। त्वयि व्यपाश्रयोऽस्माकं त्वयि भारः समाहितः ॥ तत्र कृत्यं प्रपश्यामि प्राप्तकालमरिंदम ॥३-३८-८॥
adya ceyaṃ mahī kṛtsnā duryodhanavaśānugā। tvayi vyapāśrayo'smākaṃ tvayi bhāraḥ samāhitaḥ ॥ tatra kṛtyaṃ prapaśyāmi prāptakālam ariṃdama ॥3-38-8॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; मही (mahī) - earth; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - entire; दुर्योधनवशानुगा (duryodhanavaśānugā) - following the will of Duryodhana; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; व्यपाश्रयः (vyapāśrayaḥ) - support; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - placed; तत्र (tatra) - there; कृत्यम् (kṛtyam) - duty; प्रपश्यामि (prapaśyāmi) - I see; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - timely; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(Today and this entire earth is following the will of Duryodhana; in you is the support of us, in you the burden is placed. There I see the duty, timely, O subduer of enemies.)
Today, this entire earth is under Duryodhana's control; our support rests with you, and the responsibility is placed upon you. There, I see the duty that is timely, O subduer of enemies. (3-38-8)
कृष्णद्वैपायनात्तात गृहीतोपनिषन्मया। तया प्रयुक्तया सम्यग्जगत्सर्वं प्रकाशते ॥ तेन त्वं ब्रह्मणा तात संयुक्तः सुसमाहितः ॥३-३८-९॥
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāttāta gṛhītopan­iṣanmayā। tayā prayuktayā samyagjagatsarvaṃ prakāśate ॥ tena tvaṃ brahmaṇā tāta saṃyuktaḥ susamāhitaḥ ॥3-38-9॥
[कृष्णद्वैपायनात् (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāt) - from Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; तात (tāta) - O dear one; गृहीत (gṛhīta) - taken; उपनिषत् (upaniṣat) - Upaniṣad; मया (mayā) - by me; तया (tayā) - by that; प्रयुक्तया (prayuktayā) - applied; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; जगत् (jagat) - world; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; प्रकाशते (prakāśate) - shines forth; तेन (tena) - by that; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with Brahman; तात (tāta) - O dear one; संयुक्तः (saṃyuktaḥ) - joined; सुसमाहितः (susamāhitaḥ) - well concentrated;]
(O dear one, the Upaniṣad taken by me from Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, when properly applied by that, all the world shines forth. By that, you, O dear one, joined with Brahman, are well concentrated. (3-38-9))
O dear one, the Upaniṣad which I received from Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, when properly applied, reveals the entire world. By that, you, O dear one, united with Brahman, are well composed. (3-38-9)
देवतानां यथाकालं प्रसादं प्रतिपालय। तपसा योजयात्मानमुग्रेण भरतर्षभ ॥३-३८-१०॥
devatānāṃ yathākālaṃ prasādaṃ pratipālaya। tapasā yojayātmānamugreṇa bharatarṣabha ॥3-38-10॥
[देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; यथा (yathā) - as; कालम् (kālam) - time; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; प्रतिपालय (pratipālaya) - observe; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; योजय (yojaya) - engage; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - with intense; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Of the deities as time favor observe. By austerity engage the self with intense, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, observe the favor of the deities at the proper time. Engage yourself with intense austerity. (3-38-10)
धनुष्मान्कवची खड्गी मुनिः सारसमन्वितः। न कस्यचिद्ददन्मार्गं गच्छ तातोत्तरां दिशम् ॥ इन्द्रे ह्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समस्तानि धनञ्जय ॥३-३८-११॥
dhanuṣmānkavacī khaḍgī muniḥ sārasamanvitaḥ। na kasyacid dadan mārgaṃ gaccha tāta uttarāṃ diśam ॥ indre hy astrāṇi divyāni samastāni dhanañjaya ॥3-38-11॥
[धनुष्मान् (dhanuṣmān) - having a bow; कवची (kavacī) - armored; खड्गी (khaḍgī) - sword-bearer; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; सारसमन्वितः (sārasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with a chariot; न (na) - not; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - to anyone; ददन् (dadan) - giving; मार्गम् (mārgam) - way; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; तात (tāta) - dear one; उत्तराम् (uttarām) - northern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; इन्द्रे (indre) - in Indra; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; समस्तानि (samastāni) - all; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(Having a bow, armored, sword-bearer, the sage endowed with a chariot, not to anyone giving way, go dear one to the northern direction. In Indra indeed are the weapons, all divine, O Dhananjaya.)
The sage, armed with bow, armor, and sword, and riding a chariot, did not yield the way to anyone. Go, dear one, to the northern direction. In Indra are all the divine weapons, O Dhananjaya. (3-38-11)
वृत्राद्भीतैस्तदा देवैर्बलमिन्द्रे समर्पितम्। तान्येकस्थानि सर्वाणि ततस्त्वं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ॥३-३८-१२॥
vṛtrādbhītais tadā devair balam indre samarpitam। tāny ekasthāni sarvāṇi tatas tvaṃ pratipatsyase ॥3-38-12॥
[वृत्रात् (vṛtrāt) - from Vṛtra; भीतैः (bhītaiḥ) - by the frightened; तदा (tadā) - then; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; बलम् (balam) - strength; इन्द्रे (indre) - unto Indra; समर्पितम् (samarpitam) - was offered; तानि (tāni) - those; एकस्थानि (ekasthāni) - in one place; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; प्रतिपत्स्यसे (pratipatsyase) - will obtain;]
(From Vṛtra, by the frightened, then, by the gods, strength unto Indra was offered. Those, in one place, all, then, you will obtain.)
Then, when the gods were frightened by Vṛtra, they offered all their strength to Indra. All those strengths, being in one place, you will then obtain. (3-38-12)
शक्रमेव प्रपद्यस्व स तेऽस्त्राणि प्रदास्यति। दीक्षितोऽद्यैव गच्छ त्वं द्रष्टुं देवं पुरंदरम् ॥३-३८-१३॥
śakram eva prapadyasva sa te'strāṇi pradāsyati। dīkṣito'dyaiva gaccha tvaṃ draṣṭuṃ devaṃ puraṃdaram ॥3-38-13॥
[शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रपद्यस्व (prapadyasva) - resort to; स (sa) - he; ते (te) - to you; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will give; दीक्षितः (dīkṣitaḥ) - having been consecrated; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - indeed; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; त्वम् (tvam) - you; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; देवम् (devam) - the god; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Purandara (Indra);]
(Resort indeed to Indra; he will give weapons to you. Having been consecrated, today indeed go you to see the god Purandara.)
Go to Indra himself; he will give you the weapons. Having been consecrated, go today to see the god Purandara (Indra). (3-38-13)
एवमुक्त्वा धर्मराजस्तमध्यापयत प्रभुः। दीक्षितं विधिना तेन यतवाक्कायमानसम् ॥ अनुजज्ञे ततो वीरं भ्राता भ्रातरमग्रजः ॥३-३८-१४॥
evam uktvā dharmarājas tam adhyāpayata prabhuḥ। dīkṣitaṃ vidhinā tena yatavākkāyamānasam॥ anujajñe tato vīraṃ bhrātā bhrātaram agrajaḥ॥3-38-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; तम् (tam) - him; अध्यापयत् (adhyāpayat) - caused to study; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; दीक्षितम् (dīkṣitam) - initiated; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the procedure; तेन (tena) - by him; यतवाक् (yatavāk) - restrained in speech; काय (kāya) - body; मानसम् (mānasam) - mind; अनुजज्ञे (anujajñe) - permitted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; भ्राता (bhrātā) - the brother; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - the brother; अग्रजः (agrajaḥ) - the elder;]
(Thus having spoken, the king of dharma caused him to study, the lord, initiated by the procedure by him, restrained in speech, body, and mind. Then the elder brother permitted the hero, the brother.)
Having thus spoken, the king of dharma, the lord, caused him, who was initiated according to the procedure and restrained in speech, body, and mind, to study. Then the elder brother permitted the heroic brother. (3-38-14)
निदेशाद्धर्मराजस्य द्रष्टुं देवं पुरंदरम्। धनुर्गाण्डीवमादाय तथाक्षय्यौ महेषुधी ॥३-३८-१५॥
nideśāddharmarājasya draṣṭuṃ devaṃ puraṃdaram। dhanur-gāṇḍīvam-ādāya tathākṣayyau maheṣudhī ॥3-38-15॥
[निदेशात् (nideśāt) - from the command; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; देवम् (devam) - the god; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Purandara (Indra); धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तथा (tathā) - also; अक्षय्यौ (akṣayyau) - the inexhaustible (dual); महेषुधी (maheṣudhī) - great arrows (dual);]
(From the command of Dharmarāja, to see the god Purandara, having taken the bow Gāṇḍīva and also the two inexhaustible great arrows.)
At the command of Dharmarāja, to see the god Purandara, he took up the Gāṇḍīva bow and the two inexhaustible great arrows. (3-38-15)
कवची सतलत्राणो बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान्। हुत्वाग्निं ब्राह्मणान्निष्कैः स्वस्ति वाच्य महाभुजः ॥३-३८-१६॥
kavacī satalatrāṇo baddhagodhāṅgulitravān। hutvāgniṃ brāhmaṇānniṣkaiḥ svasti vācya mahābhujaḥ ॥3-38-16॥
[कवची (kavacī) - armored one; सतलत्राणः (satalatrāṇaḥ) - with seven shields; बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् (baddhagodhāṅgulitravān) - wearing bound finger-protectors of lizard skin; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; निष्कैः (niṣkaiḥ) - with gold coins; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; वाच्य (vācya) - should be spoken; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - the mighty-armed one;]
(Armored one, with seven shields, wearing bound finger-protectors of lizard skin, having offered fire, Brahmins with gold coins, well-being should be spoken, the mighty-armed one.)
The mighty-armed one, armored, with seven shields and wearing finger-guards of lizard skin, after offering fire and gifting gold coins to Brahmins, should be wished well. (3-38-16)
प्रातिष्ठत महाबाहुः प्रगृहीतशरासनः। वधाय धार्तराष्ट्राणां निःश्वस्योर्ध्वमुदीक्ष्य च ॥३-३८-१७॥
prātiṣṭhata mahābāhuḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ। vadhāya dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ niḥśvasyordhvamudīkṣya ca ॥3-38-17॥
[प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - set out; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; प्रगृहीतशरासनः (pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ) - having taken up bow and arrow; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the destruction; धार्तराष्ट्राणां (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ) - of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - having sighed; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; उदीक्ष्य (udīkṣya) - having looked; च (ca) - and;]
(The mighty-armed (one) set out, having taken up bow and arrow, for the destruction of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having sighed, having looked upwards, and.)
The mighty-armed hero, having taken up his bow and arrows, set out for the destruction of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, sighing and looking upwards. (3-38-17)
तं दृष्ट्वा तत्र कौन्तेयं प्रगृहीतशरासनम्। अब्रुवन्ब्राह्मणाः सिद्धा भूतान्यन्तर्हितानि च ॥ क्षिप्रं प्राप्नुहि कौन्तेय मनसा यद्यदिच्छसि ॥३-३८-१८॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā tatra kaunteyaṃ pragṛhītaśarāsanam। abruvanbrāhmaṇāḥ siddhā bhūtānyantarhitāni ca ॥ kṣipraṃ prāpnuhikaunteya manasā yadyadicchasi ॥3-38-18॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तत्र (tatra) - there; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; प्रगृहीतशरासनम् (pragṛhītaśarāsanam) - holding the bow and arrow; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brahmanas; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; अन्तर्हितानि (antarhitāni) - invisible; च (ca) - and; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuh) - attain; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Him having seen there, the son of Kunti holding the bow and arrow, said the Brahmanas, perfected beings, beings, invisible and also: Quickly attain, O son of Kunti, by mind, whatever you desire.)
Seeing him there, the son of Kunti holding his bow and arrow, the Brahmanas, Siddhas, and invisible beings said: "Quickly attain by mind, O son of Kunti, whatever you desire." (3-38-18)
तं सिंहमिव गच्छन्तं शालस्कन्धोरुमर्जुनम्। मनांस्यादाय सर्वेषां कृष्णा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३-३८-१९॥
taṃ siṃhamiva gacchantaṃ śālaskandhorumarjunam। manāṃsyādāya sarveṣāṃ kṛṣṇā vacanamabravīt ॥3-38-19॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; सिंहम् (siṃham) - lion; इव (iva) - like; गच्छन्तम् (gacchantam) - going; शाल (śāla) - śāla tree; स्कन्ध (skandha) - shouldered; उरु (uru) - thighed; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Him like a lion going, with śāla-tree shoulders and thighs, Arjuna; the minds having taken of all, Kṛṣṇā speech spoke.)
Seeing Arjuna, who was going like a lion, with shoulders and thighs like a śāla tree, Kṛṣṇā, having taken the minds of all, spoke these words. (3-38-19)
यत्ते कुन्ती महाबाहो जातस्यैच्छद्धनञ्जय। तत्तेऽस्तु सर्वं कौन्तेय यथा च स्वयमिच्छसि ॥३-३८-२०॥
yat te kuntī mahābāho jātasya aicchad dhanañjaya। tat te 'stu sarvaṃ kaunteya yathā ca svayam icchasi ॥3-38-20॥
[यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - to you; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; जातस्य (jātasya) - having been born; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhanañjaya; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Which to you, Kuntī, O mighty-armed, having been born, desired, O Dhanañjaya; that to you let it be all, O son of Kuntī, as and yourself you desire.)
O Dhanañjaya, whatever your mother Kuntī desired for you at your birth, let all that be granted to you, O son of Kuntī, as you yourself desire. (3-38-20)
मास्माकं क्षत्रियकुले जन्म कश्चिदवाप्नुयात्। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नमो नित्यं येषां युद्धे न जीविका ॥३-३८-२१॥
māsmākaṃ kṣatriyakule janma kaścidavāpnuyāt। brāhmaṇebhyo namo nityaṃ yeṣāṃ yuddhe na jīvikā ॥3-38-21॥
[मास्माकं (māsmākam) - not of us; क्षत्रियकुले (kṣatriyakule) - in the family of warriors; जन्म (janma) - birth; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - should obtain; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; नमः (namaḥ) - obeisance; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; न (na) - not; जीविका (jīvikā) - livelihood;]
(Not of us in the family of warriors birth anyone should obtain. To the Brāhmaṇas obeisance always, of whom in battle not livelihood.)
No one among us should be born in the family of warriors. Always offer obeisance to the Brāhmaṇas, whose livelihood is not in battle. (3-38-21)
नूनं ते भ्रातरः सर्वे त्वत्कथाभिः प्रजागरे। रंस्यन्ते वीरकर्माणि कीर्तयन्तः पुनः पुनः ॥३-३८-२२॥
nūnaṃ te bhrātaraḥ sarve tvatkathābhiḥ prajāgare। raṃsyante vīrakarmāṇi kīrtayantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥3-38-22॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्वत्कथाभिः (tvatkathābhiḥ) - with stories about you; प्रजागरे (prajāgare) - in wakefulness; रंस्यन्ते (raṃsyante) - they delight; वीरकर्माणि (vīrakarmāṇi) - heroic deeds; कीर्तयन्तः (kīrtayantaḥ) - praising; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Certainly your brothers all, with stories about you, in wakefulness, they delight, heroic deeds, praising, again, again.)
Certainly, all your brothers, staying awake, delight again and again in praising your heroic deeds with stories about you. (3-38-22)
नैव नः पार्थ भोगेषु न धने नोत जीविते। तुष्टिर्बुद्धिर्भवित्री वा त्वयि दीर्घप्रवासिनि ॥३-३८-२३॥
naiva naḥ pārtha bhogeṣu na dhane nota jīvite। tuṣṭirbuddhirbhavitri vā tvayi dīrghapravāsini ॥3-38-23॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; भोगेषु (bhogeṣu) - in enjoyments; न (na) - not; धने (dhane) - in wealth; न (na) - not; उत (uta) - nor; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; तुष्टिः (tuṣṭiḥ) - satisfaction; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; भवित्री (bhavitri) - will be; वा (vā) - or; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; दीर्घप्रवासिनि (dīrghapravāsini) - long-absent one;]
(Not indeed for us, O Pārtha, in enjoyments, not in wealth, nor in life, satisfaction or understanding will be in you, long-absent one.)
O Pārtha, for us there is truly no satisfaction or understanding in enjoyments, wealth, or even in life, when you, the long-absent one, are not present. (3-38-23)
त्वयि नः पार्थ सर्वेषां सुखदुःखे समाहिते। जीवितं मरणं चैव राज्यमैश्वर्यमेव च ॥ आपृष्टो मेऽसि कौन्तेय स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि पाण्डव ॥३-३८-२४॥
tvayi naḥ pārtha sarveṣāṃ sukhaduḥkhe samāhite। jīvitaṃ maraṇaṃ caiva rājyamaiśvaryameva ca ॥ āpṛṣṭo me'si kaunteya svasti prāpnuhī pāṇḍava ॥3-38-24॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; नः (naḥ) - our; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; सुखदुःखे (sukhaduḥkhe) - happiness and sorrow; समाहिते (samāhite) - absorbed; जीवितं (jīvitaṃ) - life; मरणं (maraṇaṃ) - death; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - sovereignty; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; आपृष्टः (āpṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; मे (me) - by me; असि (asi) - you are; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhī) - attain; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu;]
(In you, O Pārtha, of all, in happiness and sorrow absorbed, life, death and indeed kingdom, sovereignty and indeed; having been asked by me, you are, O Kaunteya, well-being attain, O Pāṇḍava.)
O Pārtha, for all of us, with your mind absorbed equally in happiness and sorrow, life and death, as well as kingdom and sovereignty; having been asked by me, O Kaunteya, may you attain well-being, O Pāṇḍava. (3-38-24)
नमो धात्रे विधात्रे च स्वस्ति गच्छ ह्यनामयम्। स्वस्ति तेऽस्त्वान्तरिक्षेभ्यः पार्थिवेभ्यश्च भारत ॥ दिव्येभ्यश्चैव भूतेभ्यो ये चान्ये परिपन्थिनः ॥३-३८-२५॥
namo dhātre vidhātre ca svasti gaccha hy-anāmayam। svasti te-'stv-āntarikṣebhyaḥ pārthivebhyaś-ca bhārata ॥ divyebhyaś-caiva bhūtebhyo ye ca anye paripanthinaḥ ॥3-38-25॥
[नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; धात्रे (dhātre) - to the supporter; विधात्रे (vidhātre) - to the creator; च (ca) - and; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; हि (hi) - indeed; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from disease; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; अन्तरिक्षेभ्यः (antarikṣebhyaḥ) - from the beings of the mid-space; पार्थिवेभ्यः (pārthivebhyaḥ) - from the beings of the earth; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; दिव्येभ्यः (divyebhyaḥ) - from the divine beings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतेभ्यः (bhūtebhyaḥ) - from the beings; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; परिपन्थिनः (paripanthinaḥ) - enemies;]
(Salutation to the supporter, to the creator, and well-being; go indeed free from disease. Well-being to you let there be from the beings of the mid-space, from the beings of the earth, and, O Bhārata, from the divine beings indeed, from the beings, and who and others (are) enemies.)
Salutations to the supporter and the creator. Go forth in well-being, indeed free from disease. May well-being be to you from the beings of the mid-space, from those of the earth, O Bhārata, and from the divine beings, from all beings, and from any other enemies. (3-38-25)
ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा भ्रातॄन्धौम्यं च पाण्डवः। प्रातिष्ठत महाबाहुः प्रगृह्य रुचिरं धनुः ॥३-३८-२६॥
tataḥ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā bhrātṝn dhaumyaṃ ca pāṇḍavaḥ। prātiṣṭhata mahābāhuḥ pragṛhya ruciraṃ dhanuḥ ॥3-38-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रदक्षिणं (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; धौम्यं (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; प्रातिष्ठत (prātiṣṭhata) - set out; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; रुचिरं (ruciram) - beautiful; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow;]
(Then, having circumambulated the brothers and Dhaumya, the Pāṇḍava, mighty-armed, set out, having taken the beautiful bow.)
Then, after circumambulating his brothers and Dhaumya, the mighty-armed Pāṇḍava set out, taking up his beautiful bow. (3-38-26)
तस्य मार्गादपाक्रामन्सर्वभूतानि गच्छतः। युक्तस्यैन्द्रेण योगेन पराक्रान्तस्य शुष्मिणः ॥३-३८-२७॥
tasya mārgād apākrāman sarvabhūtāni gacchataḥ। yuktasya aindreṇa yogena parākrāntasya śuṣmiṇaḥ ॥3-38-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; मार्गात् (mārgāt) - from the path; अपाक्रामन् (apākrāman) - departed; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - as he was going; युक्तस्य (yuktasya) - of the united one; ऐन्द्रेण (aindreṇa) - by Indra's; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; पराक्रान्तस्य (parākrāntasya) - of the one who has surpassed; शुष्मिणः (śuṣmiṇaḥ) - of the powerful one;]
(Of him from the path departed all beings as he was going; of the united one by Indra's yoga of the one who has surpassed, of the powerful one.)
As he, the powerful one united by Indra's yoga and having surpassed, was going, all beings departed from his path. (3-38-27)
सोऽगच्छत्पर्वतं पुण्यमेकाह्नैव महामनाः। मनोजवगतिर्भूत्वा योगयुक्तो यथानिलः ॥३-३८-२८॥
so'gacchat parvataṃ puṇyam ekāhnai va mahāmanāḥ। manojavagatir bhūtvā yogayukto yathānilaḥ ॥3-38-28॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; पर्वतं (parvatam) - mountain; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - holy; एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; एव (eva) - indeed; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; मनोजवगति: (manojavagatiḥ) - having the speed of the mind; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; योगयुक्तः (yogayuktaḥ) - endowed with yoga; यथा (yathā) - like; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind;]
(He went to the holy mountain in one day indeed, the great-minded one, having become possessed of the speed of the mind, endowed with yoga, like the wind.)
He, the great-minded one, endowed with yoga and possessing the speed of the mind, went to the holy mountain in just one day, like the wind. (3-38-28)
हिमवन्तमतिक्रम्य गन्धमादनमेव च। अत्यक्रामत्स दुर्गाणि दिवारात्रमतन्द्रितः ॥३-३८-२९॥
himavantam atikramya gandhamādanam eva ca। atyakrāmats durgāṇi divārātram atandritaḥ ॥3-38-29॥
[हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - the Himavant (Himalaya) mountain; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having crossed over; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamadana (mountain); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अत्यक्रामत् (atyakrāmat) - he crossed over; सः (saḥ) - he; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficult places; दिवा (divā) - by day; रात्रम् (rātram) - by night; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - untiring;]
(Having crossed the Himavant, and indeed Gandhamadana, he crossed over the difficult places by day and by night, untiring.)
He crossed the Himalayas and Gandhamadana mountains, passing through difficult regions day and night without fatigue. (3-38-29)
इन्द्रकीलं समासाद्य ततोऽतिष्ठद्धनञ्जयः। अन्तरिक्षे हि शुश्राव तिष्ठेति स वचस्तदा ॥३-३८-३०॥
indrakīlaṃ samāsādya tato'tiṣṭhaddhanañjayaḥ। antarikṣe hi śuśrāva tiṣṭheti sa vacastadā ॥3-38-30॥
[इन्द्रकीलं (indrakīlam) - Indrakīla mountain; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - stood; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; हि (hi) - indeed; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; इति (iti) - thus; स (sa) - he; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having approached Indrakīla, then Dhanañjaya stood. Indeed, in the sky he heard the speech "Stand" at that time. (3-38-30))
After reaching Indrakīla, Dhanañjaya stood there. At that moment, he heard a voice in the sky saying "Stand." (3-38-30)
ततोऽपश्यत्सव्यसाची वृक्षमूले तपस्विनम्। ब्राह्म्या श्रिया दीप्यमानं पिङ्गलं जटिलं कृशम् ॥३-३८-३१॥
tato'paśyat-savyasācī vṛkṣamūle tapasvinam। brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānaṃ piṅgalaṃ jaṭilaṃ kṛśam ॥3-38-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Savyasācī (Arjuna); वृक्ष-मूले (vṛkṣa-mūle) - at the root of a tree; तपस्विनम् (tapasvinam) - ascetic; ब्राह्म्या (brāhmyā) - with Brahmanic; श्रिया (śriyā) - splendor; दीप्यमानम् (dīpyamānam) - shining; पिङ्गलम् (piṅgalam) - tawny; जटिलम् (jaṭilam) - matted-haired; कृशम् (kṛśam) - thin;]
(Then Savyasācī saw at the root of a tree an ascetic, shining with Brahmanic splendor, tawny, matted-haired, thin.)
Then Savyasācī (Arjuna) saw at the root of a tree an ascetic, radiant with Brahmanic splendor, tawny in color, with matted hair, and thin. (3-38-31)
सोऽब्रवीदर्जुनं तत्र स्थितं दृष्ट्वा महातपाः। कस्त्वं तातेह सम्प्राप्तो धनुष्मान्कवची शरी ॥ निबद्धासितलत्राणः क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः ॥३-३८-३२॥
so'bravīd arjunaṃ tatra sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātapāḥ। kas tvaṃ tāteha samprāpto dhanuṣmān kavacī śarī ॥ nibaddhāsitalatrāṇaḥ kṣatradharmam anuvrataḥ ॥3-38-32॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तात (tāta) - dear one; इह (iha) - here; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; धनुष्मान् (dhanuṣmān) - bearing a bow; कवची (kavacī) - armored; शरी (śarī) - with arrows; निबद्ध (nibaddha) - bound; असितलत्राणः (asitalatrāṇaḥ) - with black arm-guard; क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - warrior's duty; अनुव्रतः (anuvrataḥ) - devoted to;]
(He said to Arjuna, having seen him standing there, the great ascetic: Who are you, dear one, arrived here, bearing a bow, armored, with arrows, bound with a black arm-guard, devoted to the warrior's duty.)
The great ascetic, having seen Arjuna standing there, said: "Who are you, dear one, who has come here armed with bow and arrows, wearing armor and a black arm-guard, devoted to the warrior's duty?" (3-38-32)
नेह शस्त्रेण कर्तव्यं शान्तानामयमालयः। विनीतक्रोधहर्षाणां ब्राह्मणानां तपस्विनाम् ॥३-३८-३३॥
neha śastreṇa kartavyaṃ śāntānām ayam ālayaḥ। vinīta-krodha-harṣāṇāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ tapasvinām ॥3-38-33॥
[नेह (neha) - not here; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - should be done; शान्तानाम् (śāntānām) - of the peaceful; अयम् (ayam) - this; आलयः (ālayaḥ) - abode; विनीत (vinīta) - restrained; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; हर्षाणाम् (harṣāṇām) - of those with joy; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; तपस्विनाम् (tapasvinām) - of the ascetics;]
(Not here by weapon should be done; of the peaceful this abode; of those with restrained anger and joy, of the Brāhmaṇas, of the ascetics.)
Here, nothing should be done by weapons; this is the abode of the peaceful, of Brāhmaṇas who are ascetics with restrained anger and joy. (3-38-33)
नेहास्ति धनुषा कार्यं न सङ्ग्रामेण कर्हिचित्। निक्षिपैतद्धनुस्तात प्राप्तोऽसि परमां गतिम् ॥३-३८-३४॥
nehāsti dhanuṣā kāryaṃ na saṅgrāmeṇa karhicit। nikṣipaitaddhanustāta prāpto'si paramāṃ gatim ॥3-38-34॥
[नेह (neha) - here not; अस्ति (asti) - is; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - by the bow; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; न (na) - not; सङ्ग्रामेण (saṅgrāmeṇa) - by battle; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; निक्षिप (nikṣipa) - put down; एतद्धनुः (etaddhanuḥ) - this bow; तात (tāta) - dear one; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - you have attained; असि (asi) - are; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Here not is by the bow to be done, not by battle at any time. Put down this bow, dear one, you have attained the supreme state.)
There is nothing to be accomplished here by the bow, nor at any time by battle. Lay down this bow, dear one; you have attained the supreme state. (3-38-34)
इत्यनन्तौजसं वीरं यथा चान्यं पृथग्जनम्। तथा वाचमथाभीक्ष्णं ब्राह्मणोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥ न चैनं चालयामास धैर्यात्सुदृढनिश्चयम् ॥३-३८-३५॥
ityanantaujasaṃ vīraṃ yathā cānyaṃ pṛthagjanam। tathā vācamathābhīkṣṇaṃ brāhmaṇo'rjunamabravīt ॥ na cainaṃ cālayāmāsa dhairyātsudṛḍhaniścayam ॥3-38-35॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अनन्तौजसम् (anantaujasaṃ) - of infinite energy; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; अन्यम् (anyam) - other; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; जनम् (janam) - person; तथा (tathā) - so; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; अथ (atha) - then; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - repeatedly; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - to Arjuna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; चालयामास (cālayāmāsa) - caused to shake; धैर्यात् (dhairyāt) - from fortitude; सुदृढनिश्चयम् (sudṛḍhaniścayam) - of very firm resolve;]
(Thus, the brāhmaṇa spoke repeatedly to Arjuna, the hero of infinite energy, as (he would) to another separate person; but he did not cause him, of very firm resolve, to shake from fortitude.)
Thus, the brāhmaṇa repeatedly addressed Arjuna, the hero of infinite energy, just as he would address any other person; but due to his great fortitude and firm resolve, Arjuna was not shaken. (3-38-35)
तमुवाच ततः प्रीतः स द्विजः प्रहसन्निव। वरं वृणीष्व भद्रं ते शक्रोऽहमरिसूदन ॥३-३८-३६॥
tamuvāca tataḥ prītaḥ sa dvijaḥ prahasanniva। varaṃ vṛṇīṣva bhadraṃ te śakro'hamarisūdana ॥3-38-36॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; स (sa) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - as if smiling; वरम् (varam) - boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good; ते (te) - for you; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; अहम् (aham) - I; अरिसूदन (arisūdana) - O destroyer of enemies;]
(Him said then pleased he the twice-born as if smiling. Boon choose good for you. Śakra I O destroyer of enemies. (3-38-36))
Then, pleased, the twice-born said to him as if smiling: "Choose a boon, O destroyer of enemies, for your good. I am Śakra." (3-38-36)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच सहस्राक्षं धनञ्जयः। प्राञ्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा शूरः कुरुकुलोद्वहः ॥३-३८-३७॥
evam-uktaḥ pratyuvāca sahasrākṣaṃ dhanañjayaḥ। prāñjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā śūraḥ kurukulodvahaḥ ॥3-38-37॥

(Thus addressed, Dhananjaya replied to the thousand-eyed; with joined palms, having bowed, the hero, the best of the Kuru race.)

ईप्सितो ह्येष मे कामो वरं चैनं प्रयच्छ मे। त्वत्तोऽद्य भगवन्नस्त्रं कृत्स्नमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥३-३८-३८॥
īpsito hyeṣa me kāmo varaṃ cainaṃ prayaccha me। tvatto'dya bhagavannastraṃ kṛtsnamicchāmi veditum ॥3-38-38॥
[ईप्सितः (īpsitaḥ) - desired; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मे (me) - my; कामः (kāmaḥ) - wish; वरम् (varam) - boon; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant; मे (me) - to me; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; अद्य (adya) - today; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Indeed, this desired wish is mine; grant this boon to me. From you today, O Lord, I desire to know the entire weapon.)
Indeed, this is my cherished wish; grant me this boon. O Lord, today I wish to know the entire weapon from you. (3-38-38)
प्रत्युवाच महेन्द्रस्तं प्रीतात्मा प्रहसन्निव। इह प्राप्तस्य किं कार्यमस्त्रैस्तव धनञ्जय ॥ कामान्वृणीष्व लोकांश्च प्राप्तोऽसि परमां गतिम् ॥३-३८-३९॥
pratyuvāca mahendras taṃ prītātmā prahasann iva। iha prāptasya kiṃ kāryam astraīs tava dhanañjaya ॥ kāmān vṛṇīṣva lokāṃś ca prāpto'si paramāṃ gatim ॥3-38-39॥
[प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - Indra; तम् (tam) - to him; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with pleased mind; प्रहसन्निव (prahasann iva) - as if smiling; इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तस्य (prāptasya) - having attained; किं (kiṃ) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - purpose; अस्त्रैः (astraīḥ) - with weapons; तव (tava) - your; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; च (ca) - and; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - you have attained; असि (asi) - are; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Indra, with pleased mind, as if smiling, replied to him: O Dhananjaya, here, having attained, what purpose is there for your weapons? Choose desires and worlds; you have attained the supreme state.)
Indra, his mind pleased and as if smiling, replied to him: "O Dhananjaya, now that you have arrived here, what use are your weapons? Choose whatever desires and worlds you wish; you have attained the highest state." (3-38-39)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच सहस्राक्षं धनञ्जयः। न लोकान्न पुनः कामान्न देवत्वं कुतः सुखम् ॥३-३८-४०॥

[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; answered; सहस्राक्षम् (sahasrākṣam) - to the thousand-eyed (Indra); धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); न (na) - not; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; न (na) - not; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; न (na) - not; देवत्वम् (devatvam) - divinity; godhood; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; from where; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; pleasure;]
(Thus having been spoken to, Dhananjaya replied to the thousand-eyed: Not worlds, not again desires, not divinity, whence happiness.)
Thus addressed, Dhananjaya replied to Indra: "I do not seek worlds, nor desires again, nor divinity; so from where would happiness arise?" (3-38-40)
न च सर्वामरैश्वर्यं कामये त्रिदशाधिप। भ्रातॄंस्तान्विपिने त्यक्त्वा वैरमप्रतियात्य च ॥ अकीर्तिं सर्वलोकेषु गच्छेयं शाश्वतीः समाः ॥३-३८-४१॥
na ca sarvāmaraiśvaryaṃ kāmaye tridaśādhipa। bhrātṝṃs tān vipine tyaktvā vairam apratiyātya ca ॥ akīrtiṃ sarvalokeṣu gaccheyaṃ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ॥3-38-41॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सर्व (sarva) - all; अमर (amara) - immortal; ऐश्वर्यं (aiśvaryaṃ) - prosperity; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; त्रिदश (tridaśa) - of the thirty gods; अधिप (adhipa) - lord; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; तान् (tān) - those; विपिने (vipine) - in the forest; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; अप्रतियात्य (apratiyātya) - without returning; च (ca) - and; अकीर्तिं (akīrtiṃ) - disrepute; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṃ) - I would go; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Not and all immortal prosperity I desire, lord of the thirty gods. Brothers those in the forest having abandoned, enmity without returning and. Disrepute in all worlds I would go, eternal years.)
Nor do I desire all the prosperity of the immortals, O lord of the thirty gods. Having abandoned those brothers in the forest, and not returning enmity, I would incur disrepute in all worlds for eternal years. (3-38-41)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच वृत्रहा पाण्डुनन्दनम्। सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः ॥३-३८-४२॥
evam-uktaḥ pratyuvāca vṛtrahā pāṇḍu-nandanam। sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā vācā sarva-loka-namaskṛtaḥ ॥3-38-42॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; वृत्रहा (vṛtrahā) - the slayer of Vṛtra; पाण्डुनन्दनम् (pāṇḍunandanam) - to the son of Pāṇḍu; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः (sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ) - honored by all worlds;]
(Thus having been addressed, the slayer of Vṛtra replied to the son of Pāṇḍu, consoling with gentle speech, honored by all worlds.)

yadā drakṣyasi bhūteśaṃ tryakṣaṃ śūladharaṃ śivam। tadā dātāsmi te tāta divyānyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ ॥3-38-43॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; भूतेशम् (bhūteśam) - lord of beings; त्र्यक्षम् (tryakṣam) - three-eyed; शूलधरम् (śūladharam) - trident-bearer; शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious one; तदा (tadā) - then; दातास्मि (dātāsmi) - I am giver; ते (te) - to you; तात (tāta) - dear one; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all;]
(When you will see the lord of beings, the three-eyed, the trident-bearer, the auspicious one, then I am giver to you, dear one, of all divine weapons.)
When you see the lord of beings, the three-eyed, the trident-bearer, the auspicious Shiva, then, dear one, I will grant you all the divine weapons. (3-38-43)
क्रियतां दर्शने यत्नो देवस्य परमेष्ठिनः। दर्शनात्तस्य कौन्तेय संसिद्धः स्वर्गमेष्यसि ॥३-३८-४४॥
kriyatāṃ darśane yatno devasya parameṣṭhinaḥ। darśanāttasya kaunteya saṃsiddhaḥ svargameṣyasi ॥3-38-44॥
[क्रियतां (kriyatāṃ) - let it be done; (imperative of kṛ, to do;) दर्शने (darśane) - in seeing; (locative of darśana, sight;) यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; (noun;) देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; (genitive singular;) परमेष्ठिनः (parameṣṭhinaḥ) - of Parameṣṭhin; (Brahmā; genitive singular;) दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from seeing; (ablative of darśana;) तस्य (tasya) - of him; (genitive singular;) कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; (vocative;) संसिद्धः (saṃsiddhaḥ) - perfected; (past participle;) स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; (accusative singular;) एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will go; (future of i, to go;);]
(Let effort be made in seeing the god Parameṣṭhin; from seeing him, O son of Kuntī, perfected, you will go to heaven.)
Make an effort to see the god Parameṣṭhin; by seeing him, O son of Kuntī, you will attain perfection and go to heaven. (3-38-44)
इत्युक्त्वा फल्गुनं शक्रो जगामादर्शनं ततः। अर्जुनोऽप्यथ तत्रैव तस्थौ योगसमन्वितः ॥३-३८-४५॥
ity uktvā phalgunaṃ śakro jagāmādarśanaṃ tataḥ। arjuno'py atha tatraiva tasthau yogasamanvitaḥ ॥3-38-45॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); जगाम (jagāma) - went; अदर्शनं (adarśanam) - invisibility; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - then; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; योगसमन्वितः (yogasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with yoga;]
(Thus having spoken to Phalguna, Śakra went to invisibility then. Arjuna also then stood right there, endowed with yoga.)
Having thus spoken to Phalguna, Śakra (Indra) became invisible. Arjuna too then stood there, absorbed in yoga. (3-38-45)
