भीमसेनवचः श्रुत्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। निःश्वस्य पुरुषव्याघ्रः सम्प्रदध्यौ परन्तपः ॥३-३७-१॥
bhīmasenavacaḥ śrutvā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। niḥśvasya puruṣavyāghraḥ sampradadhyau parantapaḥ ॥3-37-1॥
[भीमसेनवचः (bhīmasenavacaḥ) - the words of Bhīmasena; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - the son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - having sighed; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; सम्प्रदध्यौ (sampradadhyau) - deeply pondered; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes;]
(Having heard the words of Bhīmasena, the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira, having sighed, the tiger among men, deeply pondered, the scorcher of foes.)
Hearing Bhīmasena's words, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and tiger among men, sighed deeply and, as the scorcher of foes, fell into deep thought. (3-37-1)
स मुहूर्तमिव ध्यात्वा विनिश्चित्येतिकृत्यताम्। भीमसेनमिदं वाक्यमपदान्तरमब्रवीत् ॥३-३७-२॥
sa muhūrtam iva dhyātvā viniścitya iti kṛtyatām। bhīmasenam idaṃ vākyam apadāntaram abravīt ॥3-37-2॥
[स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; इव (iva) - as if; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having ascertained; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्यताम् (kṛtyatām) - what should be done; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - to Bhīmasena; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अपद्-अन्तरम् (apad-antarām) - without pause; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
(He, having meditated for a moment as if, having ascertained thus what should be done, to Bhīmasena this speech without pause he spoke.)
He paused as if in meditation for a moment, determined what should be done, and then spoke these uninterrupted words to Bhīmasena. (3-37-2)
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि भारत। इदमन्यत्समाधत्स्व वाक्यं मे वाक्यकोविद ॥३-३७-३॥
evam etan mahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata। idam anyat samādhatsva vākyaṃ me vākyakovida ॥3-37-3॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; you say; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; इदम् (idam) - this; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; another; समाधत्स्व (samādhatsva) - set; arrange; establish; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - statement; speech; मे (me) - my; to me; वाक्यकोविद (vākyakovida) - expert in words; skilled in speech;]
(Thus this, O mighty-armed, as you say, O Bharata. This other set (arrange) statement my, O expert in words.)
O mighty-armed Bharata, it is just as you say. Now, O expert in words, arrange this other statement of mine. (3-37-3)
महापापानि कर्माणि यानि केवलसाहसात्। आरभ्यन्ते भीमसेन व्यथन्ते तानि भारत ॥३-३७-४॥
mahāpāpāni karmāṇi yāni kevalasāhasāt। ārabhyante bhīmasena vyathante tāni bhārata ॥3-37-4॥
[महापापानि (mahāpāpāni) - great sins; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; यानि (yāni) - which; केवलसाहसात् (kevalasāhasāt) - from mere rashness; आरभ्यन्ते (ārabhyante) - are undertaken; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - O Bhīmasena; व्यथन्ते (vyathante) - cause suffering; तानि (tāni) - those; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Great sins, actions which from mere rashness are undertaken, O Bhīmasena, cause suffering, those, O Bhārata.)
O Bhīmasena, those actions which are great sins and are undertaken out of mere rashness, O Bhārata, cause suffering. (3-37-4)
सुमन्त्रिते सुविक्रान्ते सुकृते सुविचारिते। सिध्यन्त्यर्था महाबाहो दैवं चात्र प्रदक्षिणम् ॥३-३७-५॥
sumantrite suvikrānte sukṛte suvicārite। sidhyantyarthā mahābāho daivaṃ cātra pradakṣiṇam ॥3-37-5॥
[सुमन्त्रिते (sumantrite) - well-counseled; सुविक्रान्ते (suvikrānte) - well-accomplished; सुकृते (sukṛte) - well-done; सुविचारिते (suvicārite) - well-considered; सिध्यन्ति (sidhyanti) - are accomplished; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - purposes; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - favorable;]
(In what is well-counseled, well-accomplished, well-done, and well-considered, purposes are accomplished, O mighty-armed; here fate also is favorable.)
O mighty-armed one, when actions are well-counseled, well-accomplished, well-done, and well-considered, purposes are achieved; here, fate too is favorable. (3-37-5)
त्वं तु केवलचापल्याद्बलदर्पोच्छ्रितः स्वयम्। आरब्धव्यमिदं कर्म मन्यसे शृणु तत्र मे ॥३-३७-६॥
tvaṁ tu kevalacāpalyādbaladarpocchritaḥ svayam। ārabdhavyamidaṁ karma manyase śṛṇu tatra me ॥3-37-6॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तु (tu) - but; केवल (kevala) - only; चापल्यात् (cāpalyāt) - from fickleness; बल (bala) - strength; दर्प (darpa) - pride; उच्छ्रितः (ucchritaḥ) - arisen; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; आरब्धव्यम् (ārabdhavyam) - ought to be begun; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कर्म (karma) - action; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my;]
(You but only from fickleness, arisen from the pride of strength, yourself; ought to be begun this action you think; hear there my.)
But you, out of mere fickleness and pride in your own strength, think that this action ought to be undertaken by yourself; hear my view on that. (3-37-6)
भूरिश्रवाः शलश्चैव जलसन्धश्च वीर्यवान्। भीष्मो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च द्रोणपुत्रश्च वीर्यवान् ॥३-३७-७॥
bhūriśravāḥ śalaścaiva jalasandhaśca vīryavān। bhīṣmo droṇaśca karṇaśca droṇaputraśca vīryavān ॥3-37-7॥

Bhūriśravā, Śala, and Jalasandha, all powerful; Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa, and Droṇaputra, all powerful. (3-37-7)
धार्तराष्ट्रा दुराधर्षा दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः। सर्व एव कृतास्त्राश्च सततं चाततायिनः ॥३-३७-८॥
dhārtarāṣṭrā durādharṣā duryodhanapurogamāḥ। sarva eva kṛtāstrāś ca satataṃ cātatāyinaḥ ॥3-37-8॥
[धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; दुराधर्षाः (durādharṣāḥ) - difficult to overcome; दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः (duryodhanapurogamāḥ) - headed by Duryodhana; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; कृतास्त्राः (kṛtāstrāḥ) - trained in weapons; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; च (ca) - and; अततायिनः (atatāyinaḥ) - aggressors;]
(The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, difficult to overcome, headed by Duryodhana, all indeed, trained in weapons and always aggressors.)
The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who are difficult to defeat and led by Duryodhana, are all skilled in weaponry and are constantly aggressors. (3-37-8)
राजानः पार्थिवाश्चैव येऽस्माभिरुपतापिताः। संश्रिताः कौरवं पक्षं जातस्नेहाश्च साम्प्रतम् ॥३-३७-९॥
rājānaḥ pārthivāścaiva ye'smābhirupatāpitāḥ। saṃśritāḥ kauravaṃ pakṣaṃ jātasnehāśca sāmpratam ॥3-37-9॥
[राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - earthly rulers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; उपतापिताः (upatāpitāḥ) - afflicted; संश्रिताः (saṃśritāḥ) - taken refuge; कौरवं (kauravam) - Kaurava; पक्षं (pakṣam) - side; जातस्नेहाः (jātasnehāḥ) - having developed affection; च (ca) - and; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present;]
(Kings, earthly rulers and indeed, who by us afflicted, having taken refuge in the Kaurava side, having developed affection and at present.)
The kings and earthly rulers who were afflicted by us, having now taken refuge with the Kaurava side and developed affection for them at present. (3-37-9)
दुर्योधनहिते युक्ता न तथास्मासु भारत। पूर्णकोशा बलोपेताः प्रयतिष्यन्ति रक्षणे ॥३-३७-१०॥
duryodhanahite yuktā na tathāsmāsu bhārata। pūrṇakośā balopetāḥ prayatiṣyanti rakṣaṇe ॥3-37-10॥
[दुर्योधनहिते (duryodhanahite) - for Duryodhana's benefit; युक्ता (yuktā) - engaged; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - among us; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पूर्णकोशा (pūrṇakośā) - with full treasuries; बलोपेताः (balopetāḥ) - endowed with strength; प्रयतिष्यन्ति (prayatiṣyanti) - will strive; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection;]
(Engaged for Duryodhana's benefit, not in the same way among us, O Bhārata; with full treasuries, endowed with strength, they will strive in protection.)
O Bhārata, those engaged for Duryodhana's benefit are not so among us; with full treasuries and endowed with strength, they will strive to protect him. (3-37-10)
सर्वे कौरवसैन्यस्य सपुत्रामात्यसैनिकाः। संविभक्ता हि मात्राभिर्भोगैरपि च सर्वशः ॥३-३७-११॥
sarve kauravasainyasya saputrāmātyasainikāḥ। saṃvibhaktā hi mātrābhirbhogairapi ca sarvaśaḥ ॥3-37-11॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; कौरवसैन्यस्य (kauravasainyasya) - of the Kaurava army; सपुत्रामात्यसैनिकाः (saputrāmātyasainikāḥ) - with sons, ministers, and soldiers; संविभक्ता (saṃvibhaktā) - distributed; हि (hi) - indeed; मात्राभिः (mātrābhiḥ) - by measures; भोगैः (bhogaiḥ) - by enjoyments; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(All of the Kaurava army, with sons, ministers, and soldiers, indeed were distributed by measures, by enjoyments also and in every way.)
All members of the Kaurava army, along with their sons, ministers, and soldiers, were indeed allotted enjoyments and shares in every possible way. (3-37-11)
दुर्योधनेन ते वीरा मानिताश्च विशेषतः। प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यन्ति सङ्ग्रामे इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥३-३७-१२॥
duryodhanena te vīrā mānitāś ca viśeṣataḥ। prāṇāṁs tyakṣyanti saṅgrāme iti me niścitā matiḥ ॥3-37-12॥
[दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; ते (te) - those; वीरा (vīrā) - heroes; मानिताः (mānitāḥ) - honored; च (ca) - and; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; त्यक्ष्यन्ति (tyakṣyanti) - will abandon; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - determined; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(By Duryodhana those heroes honored and especially lives will abandon in battle thus my determined thought.)
Those heroes, honored especially by Duryodhana, will abandon their lives in battle; thus is my determined thought. (3-37-12)
समा यद्यपि भीष्मस्य वृत्तिरस्मासु तेषु च। द्रोणस्य च महाबाहो कृपस्य च महात्मनः ॥३-३७-१३॥
samā yadyapi bhīṣmasya vṛttirasmāsu teṣu ca। droṇasya ca mahābāho kṛpasya ca mahātmanah ॥3-37-13॥
[समा (samā) - equal; same; alike; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - although; even if; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhīṣma; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; behavior; disposition; अस्मासु (asmāsu) - towards us; in us; तेषु (teṣu) - towards them; in them; च (ca) - and; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; च (ca) - and; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कृपस्य (kṛpasya) - of Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Equal although the conduct of Bhīṣma towards us and towards them and of Droṇa and O mighty-armed, of Kṛpa and of the great-souled.)
Although the conduct of Bhīṣma towards us and them is equal, O mighty-armed one, so too is that of Droṇa and the great-souled Kṛpa. (3-37-13)
अवश्यं राजपिण्डस्तैर्निर्वेश्य इति मे मतिः। तस्मात्त्यक्ष्यन्ति सङ्ग्रामे प्राणानपि सुदुस्त्यजान् ॥३-३७-१४॥
avaśyaṃ rājapiṇḍas tair nirveśya iti me matiḥ। tasmāt tyakṣyanti saṅgrāme prāṇān api sudustyajān ॥3-37-14॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; राजपिण्डः (rājapiṇḍaḥ) - royal share (of food); तैः (taiḥ) - by them; निर्वेश्य (nirveśya) - to be offered; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्यक्ष्यन्ति (tyakṣyanti) - they will abandon; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; अपि (api) - even; सुदुस्त्यजान् (sudustyajān) - very difficult to abandon;]
(Certainly the royal share by them is to be offered, thus my thought; therefore they will abandon in battle even lives very difficult to abandon.)
It is my firm conviction that they must certainly offer the royal share; therefore, in battle, they will even give up their lives, which are so hard to abandon. (3-37-14)
सर्वे दिव्यास्त्रविद्वांसः सर्वे धर्मपरायणाः। अजेयाश्चेति मे बुद्धिरपि देवैः सवासवैः ॥३-३७-१५॥
sarve divyāstravidvāṃsaḥ sarve dharmaparāyaṇāḥ। ajeyāś ceti me buddhir api devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ ॥3-37-15॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; दिव्य (divya) - divine; अस्त्र (astra) - weapon; विद्वांसः (vidvāṃsaḥ) - knowers; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; परायणाः (parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted; अजेयाः (ajeyāḥ) - invincible; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; अपि (api) - also; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सवासवैः (savāsavaiḥ) - with Vāsava (Indra);]
(All are knowers of divine weapons, all are devoted to righteousness. Invincible, thus is my understanding, also by the gods with Vāsava (Indra).)
All are skilled in divine weapons, all are devoted to righteousness. My understanding is that they are invincible, even by the gods together with Vāsava (Indra). (3-37-15)
अमर्षी नित्यसंहृष्टस्तत्र कर्णो महारथः। सर्वास्त्रविदनाधृष्य अभेद्यकवचावृतः ॥३-३७-१६॥
amarṣī nityasaṁhṛṣṭas tatra karṇo mahārathaḥ। sarvāstravid anādhṛṣya abhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ ॥3-37-16॥
[अमर्षी (amarṣī) - not-forbearing; नित्यसंहृष्टः (nityasaṁhṛṣṭaḥ) - always-gladdened; तत्र (tatra) - there; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great-chariot-warrior; सर्वास्त्रविद् (sarvāstravid) - knower-of-all-weapons; अनाधृष्य (anādhṛṣya) - unassailable; अभेद्यकवचावृतः (abhedyakavacāvṛtaḥ) - covered-with-impenetrable-armor;]
(Not-forbearing, always-gladdened, there Karṇa, great-chariot-warrior, knower-of-all-weapons, unassailable, covered-with-impenetrable-armor.)
There, Karṇa, the great chariot-warrior, who was not-forbearing and always gladdened, was unassailable, a knower of all weapons, and covered with impenetrable armor. (3-37-16)
अनिर्जित्य रणे सर्वानेतान्पुरुषसत्तमान्। अशक्यो ह्यसहायेन हन्तुं दुर्योधनस्त्वया ॥३-३७-१७॥
anirjitya raṇe sarvān etān puruṣasattamān। aśakyo hy asahāyena hantuṃ duryodhanas tvayā ॥3-37-17॥
[अनिर्जित्य (anirjitya) - not having conquered; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; एतान् (etān) - these; पुरुषसत्तमान् (puruṣasattamān) - the foremost of men; अशक्यः (aśakyaḥ) - not possible; हि (hi) - indeed; असहायेन (asahāyena) - by one without help; हन्तुम् (hantuṃ) - to kill; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Not having conquered in battle all these foremost of men, indeed, by one without help, to kill Duryodhana by you is not possible.)
Unless you have conquered all these foremost warriors in battle, it is not possible for you, unaided, to kill Duryodhana. (3-37-17)
न निद्रामधिगच्छामि चिन्तयानो वृकोदर। अति सर्वान्धनुर्ग्राहान्सूतपुत्रस्य लाघवम् ॥३-३७-१८॥
na nidrām adhigacchāmi cintayāno vṛkodara। ati sarvān dhanurgrāhān sūtaputrasya lāghavam ॥3-37-18॥
[न (na) - not; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - I obtain; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - Vṛkodara; अति (ati) - excessively; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; धनुर्ग्राहान् (dhanurgrāhān) - archers; सूतपुत्रस्य (sūtaputrasya) - of the son of the charioteer; लाघवम् (lāghavam) - lightness;]
(Not sleep I obtain thinking, O Vṛkodara. Excessively all archers, of the son of the charioteer, lightness.)
O Vṛkodara, I do not obtain sleep while thinking about the exceptional lightness of hand of the son of the charioteer, which surpasses all archers. (3-37-18)
एतद्वचनमाज्ञाय भीमसेनोऽत्यमर्षणः। बभूव विमनास्त्रस्तो न चैवोवाच किञ्चन ॥३-३७-१९॥
etadvacanamājñāya bhīmaseno’tyamarṣaṇaḥ। babhūva vimanāstrasto na caivovāca kiñcana ॥3-37-19॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अत्य् (aty) - excessively; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - impatient; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - dispirited; त्रस्तः (trastaḥ) - disturbed; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(Having understood this speech, Bhīmasena, excessively impatient, became dispirited, disturbed, and did not indeed speak anything.)
Upon hearing these words, Bhīmasena, who was extremely impatient, became dispirited and agitated, and did not say anything at all. (3-37-19)
तयोः संवदतोरेवं तदा पाण्डवयोर्द्वयोः। आजगाम महायोगी व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः ॥३-३७-२०॥
tayoḥ saṁvadatorevaṁ tadā pāṇḍavayordvayoḥ। ājagāma mahāyogī vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ॥3-37-20॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; संवदतोः (saṁvadatoḥ) - while conversing (of the two); एवं (evaṁ) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; पाण्डवयोः (pāṇḍavayoḥ) - of the two Pāṇḍavas; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - the great yogi; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - the son of Satyavatī;]
(Of those two, while conversing thus, then, of the two Pāṇḍavas, of the two, arrived the great yogi Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī.)
While those two Pāṇḍavas were thus conversing, at that moment, the great yogi Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, arrived. (3-37-20)
सोऽभिगम्य यथान्यायं पाण्डवैः प्रतिपूजितः। युधिष्ठिरमिदं वाक्यमुवाच वदतां वरः ॥३-३७-२१॥
so'bhigamya yathānyāyaṃ pāṇḍavaiḥ pratipūjitaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiram idaṃ vākyam uvāca vadatāṃ varaḥ ॥3-37-21॥

(He, having approached, as is proper, having been duly honored by the Pāṇḍavas, to Yudhiṣṭhira this speech said, the best of speakers.)
He, having approached and having been duly honored by the Pāṇḍavas in the proper manner, spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira, the best among speakers. (3-37-21)
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो वेद्मि ते हृदि मानसम्। मनीषया ततः क्षिप्रमागतोऽस्मि नरर्षभ ॥३-३७-२२॥
yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho vedmi te hṛdi mānasam। manīṣayā tataḥ kṣipram āgato'smi nararṣabha ॥3-37-22॥

(Yudhiṣṭhira, O mighty-armed, I know your mind in (the) heart; by (my) discernment, therefore, quickly (I) have come, am, O bull among men.)
O mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira, I know the thoughts in your heart; therefore, by my discernment, I have quickly come here, O best of men. (3-37-22)
भीष्माद्द्रोणात्कृपात्कर्णाद्द्रोणपुत्राच्च भारत। यत्ते भयममित्रघ्न हृदि सम्परिवर्तते ॥३-३७-२३॥
bhīṣmād droṇāt kṛpāt karṇād droṇaputrāc ca bhārata। yat te bhayam amitra-ghna hṛdi samparivartate ॥3-37-23॥

(From Bhīṣma, from Droṇa, from Kṛpa, from Karṇa, from Droṇa's son and, O Bhārata, which your fear, destroyer of enemies, in (your) heart moves about.)
O Bhārata, the fear that moves in your heart regarding Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Droṇa's son, O destroyer of enemies, (I speak of that). (3-37-23)
तत्तेऽहं नाशयिष्यामि विधिदृष्टेन हेतुना। तच्छ्रुत्वा धृतिमास्थाय कर्मणा प्रतिपादय ॥३-३७-२४॥
tat te 'haṃ nāśayiṣyāmi vidhidṛṣṭena hetunā। tac chrutvā dhṛtim āsthāya karmaṇā pratipādaya ॥3-37-24॥

(That to you I will destroy by what is ordained by rule, by the cause. That having heard, having assumed steadfastness, by action establish.)
I will destroy that for you by the cause ordained by rule. Having heard this, assume steadfastness and establish it by action. (3-37-24)
तत एकान्तमुन्नीय पाराशर्यो युधिष्ठिरम्। अब्रवीदुपपन्नार्थमिदं वाक्यविशारदः ॥३-३७-२५॥
tat ekāntamunnīya pārāśaryo yudhiṣṭhiram। abravīdupapannārthamidaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ॥3-37-25॥

(Then, having led Yudhiṣṭhira to a secluded place, the son of Parāśara, skilled in speech, said this with appropriate meaning.)
Then Vyāsa, the son of Parāśara, skillful in speech, led Yudhiṣṭhira to a secluded place and spoke these words with fitting meaning. (3-37-25)
श्रेयसस्ते परः कालः प्राप्तो भरतसत्तम। येनाभिभविता शत्रून्रणे पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥३-३७-२६॥
śreyasaste paraḥ kālaḥ prāpto bharatasattama। yenābhibhavitā śatrūnraṇe pārtho dhanañjayaḥ ॥3-37-26॥

(Of prosperity to you, the supreme time has arrived, O best of the Bharatas; by whom the enemies in battle will be conquered, Pārtha, Dhanañjaya.)
O best of the Bharatas, the supreme time for your prosperity has arrived, by which Pārtha, Dhanañjaya, will conquer the enemies in battle. (3-37-26)
गृहाणेमां मया प्रोक्तां सिद्धिं मूर्तिमतीमिव। विद्यां प्रतिस्मृतिं नाम प्रपन्नाय ब्रवीमि ते ॥ यामवाप्य महाबाहुरर्जुनः साधयिष्यति ॥३-३७-२७॥
gṛhāṇemāṁ mayā proktāṁ siddhiṁ mūrtimatīm iva। vidyāṁ pratismṛtiṁ nāma prapannāya bravīmi te ॥ yām avāpya mahābāhur arjunaḥ sādhayiṣyati ॥3-37-27॥

(Accept this accomplishment spoken by me, as if embodied; the knowledge called remembrance, I speak to you who has taken refuge. Which, having obtained, the mighty-armed Arjuna will accomplish.)
Accept this accomplishment spoken by me, as if it were embodied; I impart to you, who has sought refuge, the knowledge called 'remembrance'. Having obtained this, the mighty-armed Arjuna will accomplish his purpose. (3-37-27)

(For the sake of weapons, let him approach Mahendra and Rudra indeed; and Varuṇa and Dhaneśa and Dharmarāja and, O Pāṇḍava, he is indeed capable to see the gods by austerity and by prowess.)
O Pāṇḍava, for the sake of weapons, let him approach Mahendra, Rudra, Varuṇa, Dhaneśa, and Dharmarāja; he is indeed capable of seeing the gods through austerity and prowess. (3-37-28)
ऋषिरेष महातेजा नारायणसहायवान्। पुराणः शाश्वतो देवो विष्णोरंशः सनातनः ॥३-३७-२९॥
ṛṣir eṣa mahātejā nārāyaṇasahāyavān। purāṇaḥ śāśvato devo viṣṇoraṃśaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥3-37-29॥
[ऋषि (ṛṣi) - seer; sage; एष (eṣa) - this; he; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; possessing great energy; नारायणसहायवान् (nārāyaṇasahāyavān) - having Nārāyaṇa as helper; supported by Nārāyaṇa; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; old; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; perpetual; देवः (devaḥ) - god; divine being; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; अंशः (aṃśaḥ) - portion; part; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; everlasting;]
(This seer, of great splendor, having Nārāyaṇa as helper, ancient, eternal, god, portion of Viṣṇu, everlasting.)
This sage, endowed with great energy and supported by Nārāyaṇa, is ancient, eternal, divine, and an everlasting portion of Viṣṇu. (3-37-29)
अस्त्राणीन्द्राच्च रुद्राच्च लोकपालेभ्य एव च। समादाय महाबाहुर्महत्कर्म करिष्यति ॥३-३७-३०॥
astrāṇīndrāc ca rudrāc ca lokapālebhya eva ca। samādāya mahābāhur mahatkarma kariṣyati॥3-37-30॥
[अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - from Indra; च (ca) - and; रुद्रात् (rudrāt) - from Rudra; च (ca) - and; लोकपालेभ्यः (lokapālebhyaḥ) - from the guardians of the worlds; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; महत् (mahat) - great; कर्म (karma) - deed; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will perform;]
(Weapons from Indra and from Rudra and from the guardians of the worlds indeed and, having taken, the mighty-armed one great deed will perform.)
Having received weapons from Indra, Rudra, and the guardians of the worlds, the mighty-armed one will perform a great deed. (3-37-30)
वनादस्माच्च कौन्तेय वनमन्यद्विचिन्त्यताम्। निवासार्थाय यद्युक्तं भवेद्वः पृथिवीपते ॥३-३७-३१॥
vanādasmācca kaunteya vanamanyadvicintyatām। nivāsārthāya yadyuktaṃ bhavedvaḥ pṛthivīpate ॥3-37-31॥
[वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; वनम् (vanam) - forest; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; विचिन्त्यताम् (vicintyatām) - let it be considered; निवासार्थाय (nivāsārthāya) - for the purpose of dwelling; यत् (yat) - which; युक्तम् (yuktam) - suitable; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; वः (vaḥ) - for you; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(From this forest and, O son of Kunti, let another forest be considered; for the purpose of dwelling, whichever may be suitable for you, O lord of the earth.)
O son of Kunti, let another forest besides this one be considered for your dwelling, whichever may be suitable for you, O lord of the earth. (3-37-31)
एकत्र चिरवासो हि न प्रीतिजननो भवेत्। तापसानां च शान्तानां भवेदुद्वेगकारकः ॥३-३७-३२॥
ekatra ciravāso hi na prītijanano bhavet। tāpasānāṃ ca śāntānāṃ bhavedudvegakārakaḥ ॥3-37-32॥
[एकत्र (ekatra) - in one place; चिरवासः (ciravāsaḥ) - long dwelling; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; प्रीतिजननः (prītijananaḥ) - cause of affection; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; तापसानाम् (tāpasānām) - of ascetics; च (ca) - and; शान्तानाम् (śāntānām) - of the peaceful; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; उद्वेगकारकः (udvegakārakaḥ) - cause of disturbance;]
(In one place, long dwelling indeed not cause of affection would be; of ascetics and of the peaceful it would be cause of disturbance.)
Indeed, long dwelling together in one place does not generate affection; for ascetics and the peaceful, it would be a cause of disturbance. (3-37-32)
मृगाणामुपयोगश्च वीरुदोषधिसङ्क्षयः। बिभर्षि हि बहून्विप्रान्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगान् ॥३-३७-३३॥
mṛgāṇām-upayogaś-ca vīrud-oṣadhi-saṅkṣayaḥ। bibhārṣi hi bahūn viprān veda-vedāṅga-pāragān ॥3-37-33॥
[मृगाणाम् (mṛgāṇām) - of the deer; उपयोगः (upayogaḥ) - use; employment; च (ca) - and; वीरुद् (vīrud) - of herbs; ओषधि (oṣadhi) - of medicinal plants; सङ्क्षयः (saṅkṣayaḥ) - destruction; loss; बिभर्षि (bibhārṣi) - you bear; you carry; हि (hi) - indeed; बहून् (bahūn) - many; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; वेद (veda) - Veda; वेदाङ्ग (vedāṅga) - limbs of the Veda; पारगान् (pāragān) - those who have crossed over; those who are proficient;]
(The use of deer and the destruction of herbs and medicinal plants; you indeed bear many Brāhmaṇas who are proficient in the Veda and the limbs of the Veda.)
You make use of deer and cause the destruction of herbs and medicinal plants; indeed, you support many Brāhmaṇas who are well-versed in the Veda and its branches. (3-37-33)
एवमुक्त्वा प्रपन्नाय शुचये भगवान्प्रभुः। प्रोवाच योगतत्त्वज्ञो योगविद्यामनुत्तमाम् ॥३-३७-३४॥
evam uktvā prapannāya śucaye bhagavān prabhuḥ। provāca yogatattvajño yogavidyām anuttamām ॥3-37-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रपन्नाय (prapannāya) - to the one who has taken refuge; शुचये (śucaye) - to the pure; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; योगतत्त्वज्ञः (yogatattvajñaḥ) - knower of the essence of yoga; योगविद्याम् (yogavidyām) - the knowledge of yoga; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassed;]
(Thus having spoken to the one who has taken refuge, to the pure, the illustrious lord spoke, the knower of the essence of yoga, the unsurpassed knowledge of yoga.)
Having thus spoken to the pure-hearted one who had taken refuge, the illustrious Lord, master and knower of the essence of yoga, imparted the unsurpassed knowledge of yoga. (3-37-34)
धर्मराज्ञे तदा धीमान्व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः। अनुज्ञाय च कौन्तेयं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥३-३७-३५॥
dharmarājñe tadā dhīmān vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ। anujñāya ca kaunteyaṃ tatraiva antaradhīyata ॥3-37-35॥
[धर्मराज्ञे (dharmarājñe) - to the king of dharma; तदा (tadā) - then; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - son of Satyavatī; अनुज्ञाय (anujñāya) - having permitted; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - Kuntī's son; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(To the king of dharma then the wise Vyāsa, son of Satyavatī, having permitted and Kuntī's son, right there disappeared.)
Then the wise Vyāsa, son of Satyavatī, having given permission to the king of dharma and Kuntī's son, disappeared right there. (3-37-35)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु धर्मात्मा तद्ब्रह्म मनसा यतः। धारयामास मेधावी काले काले समभ्यसन् ॥३-३७-३६॥
yudhiṣṭhirastu dharmātmā tadbrahma manasā yataḥ। dhārayāmāsa medhāvī kāle kāle samabhyasan ॥3-37-36॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - one whose nature is dharma; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; यतः (yataḥ) - controlled; धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - held; मेधावी (medhāvī) - the intelligent one; काले (kāle) - at the time; काले (kāle) - at the time; समभ्यसन् (samabhyasan) - practiced repeatedly;]
(Yudhishthira but, one whose nature is dharma, that Brahman with the mind controlled, held; the intelligent one, at the time, at the time, practiced repeatedly.)
But Yudhishthira, whose nature was dharma, with a controlled mind, held that Brahman and, being intelligent, practiced it repeatedly at every proper time. (3-37-36)
स व्यासवाक्यमुदितो वनाद्द्वैतवनात्ततः। ययौ सरस्वतीतीरे काम्यकं नाम काननम् ॥३-३७-३७॥
sa vyāsavākyamudito vanāddvaitavanāttataḥ। yayau sarasvatītīre kāmyakaṃ nāma kānanam ॥3-37-37॥

(He, inspired by Vyāsa's words, from the forest, from Dvaita forest, then, went, on the bank of Sarasvatī, Kāmyaka, named, forest.)
He, inspired by Vyāsa's words, then left the Dvaita forest and went to the forest named Kāmyaka on the bank of the Sarasvatī. (3-37-37)
तमन्वयुर्महाराज शिक्षाक्षरविदस्तथा। ब्राह्मणास्तपसा युक्ता देवेन्द्रमृषयो यथा ॥३-३७-३८॥
tamanvayurmahārāja śikṣākṣaravidastathā। brāhmaṇāstapasā yuktā devendramṛṣayo yathā ॥3-37-38॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; शिक्षा (śikṣā) - instruction; अक्षरविदः (akṣaravidaḥ) - knowers of syllables; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra, lord of the gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Him followed, O great king, those skilled in instruction and syllables likewise, Brāhmaṇas engaged in austerity, as the sages (follow) Indra, lord of the gods.)
O great king, those skilled in instruction and syllables, as well as Brāhmaṇas devoted to austerity, followed him just as the sages follow Indra, the lord of the gods. (3-37-38)
ततः काम्यकमासाद्य पुनस्ते भरतर्षभाः। न्यविशन्त महात्मानः सामात्याः सपदानुगाः ॥३-३७-३९॥
tataḥ kāmyakam āsādya punas te bharatarṣabhāḥ। nyaviśanta mahātmānaḥ sāmātyāḥ sapadānugāḥ ॥3-37-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; काम्यकम् (kāmyakam) - Kamyaka (forest); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ते (te) - they; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among the Bharatas; न्यविशन्त (nyaviśanta) - they settled; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सामात्याः (sāmātyāḥ) - with their ministers; सपदानुगाः (sapadānugāḥ) - with their attendants;]
(From there, having reached Kamyaka, again those bulls among the Bharatas, great-souled ones, with their ministers, with their attendants, settled.)
Then, after reaching Kamyaka once again, those great-souled leaders of the Bharatas, along with their ministers and attendants, settled down. (3-37-39)
तत्र ते न्यवसन्राजन्कञ्चित्कालं मनस्विनः। धनुर्वेदपरा वीराः शृण्वाना वेदमुत्तमम् ॥३-३७-४०॥
tatra te nyavasan rājan kañcit kālaṃ manasvinaḥ। dhanurvedaparā vīrāḥ śṛṇvānā vedam uttamam ॥3-37-40॥
