Pancharatra: Arjuna’s penance.

भगवञ्श्रोतुमिच्छामि पार्थस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। विस्तरेण कथामेतां यथास्त्राण्युपलब्धवान् ॥३-३९-१॥
bhagavañśrotumicchāmi pārthasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ। vistareṇa kathāmetāṃ yathāstrāṇyupalabdhavān ॥3-39-1॥

(O Lord, to hear I wish of Pārtha of unwearied action, in detail this story, how weapons he obtained.)
O Lord, I wish to hear in detail the story of how Pārtha, who performed unwearied actions, obtained the weapons. (3-39-1)
कथं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो दीर्घबाहुर्धनञ्जयः। वनं प्रविष्टस्तेजस्वी निर्मनुष्यमभीतवत् ॥३-३९-२॥
kathaṁ sa puruṣavyāghro dīrghabāhur dhanañjayaḥ। vanaṁ praviṣṭas tejasvī nirmanuṣyam abhītavat ॥3-39-2॥

How did he, Dhananjaya, the long-armed and radiant tiger among men, enter the deserted forest as if without fear? (3-39-2)
किं च तेन कृतं तत्र वसता ब्रह्मवित्तम। कथं च भगवान्स्थाणुर्देवराजश्च तोषितः ॥३-३९-३॥
kiṁ ca tena kṛtaṁ tatra vasatā brahmavittama। kathaṁ ca bhagavān sthāṇur devarājaś ca toṣitaḥ ॥3-39-3॥

(What and by him was done there by dwelling, O knower of Brahman; how and the Lord Sthāṇu and the king of the gods were pleased.)
O knower of Brahman, what did he do there while residing, and how were the Lord Sthāṇu and the king of the gods pleased? (3-39-3)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं त्वत्प्रसादाद्द्विजोत्तम। त्वं हि सर्वज्ञ दिव्यं च मानुषं चैव वेत्थ ह ॥३-३९-४॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ tvatprasādāddvijottama। tvaṃ hi sarvajña divyaṃ ca mānuṣaṃ caiva vettha ha ॥3-39-4॥

(This I desire I to hear by your favor, O best of the twice-born; you indeed all-knowing, the divine and the human indeed you know indeed.)
O best of the twice-born, I wish to hear this from you by your favor. For you are indeed all-knowing; you know both the divine and the human, indeed. (3-39-4)
अत्यद्भुतं महाप्राज्ञ रोमहर्षणमर्जुनः। भवेन सह सङ्ग्रामं चकाराप्रतिमं किल ॥ पुरा प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः सङ्ग्रामेष्वपराजितः ॥३-३९-५॥
atyadbhutaṃ mahāprājña romaharṣaṇamarjunaḥ। bhavena saha saṅgrāmaṃ cakārāpratimaṃ kila ॥ purā praharatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ saṅgrāmeṣvaparājitaḥ ॥3-39-5॥
[अत्यद्भुतं (atyadbhutaṃ) - very-wonderful; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - great-wise; रोमहर्षणमर्जुनः (romaharṣaṇamarjunaḥ) - hair-raising-Arjuna; भवेन (bhavena) - with-Bhava (Śiva); सह (saha) - together-with; सङ्ग्रामं (saṅgrāmaṃ) - battle; चकार (cakāra) - did; अप्रतिमं (apratimaṃ) - unparalleled; किल (kila) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्रहरतां (praharatāṃ) - of-those-striking; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the-best; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in-battles; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unconquered;]
(Very wonderful, the great-wise, hair-raising Arjuna, with Bhava (Śiva), together, battle did, unparalleled, indeed. Formerly, of those striking, the best, in battles, unconquered.)
Arjuna, the supremely wise and awe-inspiring, once fought an unparalleled battle together with Bhava (Śiva); formerly, he was the best among warriors and unconquered in battles. (3-39-5)
यच्छ्रुत्वा नरसिंहानां दैन्यहर्षातिविस्मयात्। शूराणामपि पार्थानां हृदयानि चकम्पिरे ॥३-३९-६॥
yacchrutvā nara-siṃhānāṃ dainya-harṣa-ativismayāt। śūrāṇām api pārthānāṃ hṛdayāni cakampire ॥3-39-6॥

(Which having heard, from the excessive astonishment of dejection and joy of the lion-men, even the hearts of the heroic sons of Pṛthā trembled.)
Hearing this, from the overwhelming astonishment of dejection and joy of the lion-like men, even the hearts of the heroic sons of Pṛthā trembled. (3-39-6)
यद्यच्च कृतवानन्यत्पार्थस्तदखिलं वद। न ह्यस्य निन्दितं जिष्णोः सुसूक्ष्ममपि लक्षये ॥ चरितं तस्य शूरस्य तन्मे सर्वं प्रकीर्तय ॥३-३९-७॥
yadyacca kṛtavān anyat pārthaḥ tad akhilaṃ vada। na hi asya ninditaṃ jiṣṇoḥ susūkṣmam api lakṣaye ॥ caritaṃ tasya śūrasya tan me sarvaṃ prakīrtaya ॥3-39-7॥
[यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; तत् (tat) - that; अखिलम् (akhilam) - all; वद (vada) - tell; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; निन्दितम् (ninditam) - blameworthy; जिष्णोः (jiṣṇoḥ) - of Jiṣṇu; सुसूक्ष्मम् (susūkṣmam) - very subtle; अपि (api) - even; लक्षये (lakṣaye) - I perceive; चरितम् (caritam) - conduct; तस्य (tasya) - of him; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of the hero; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रकीर्तय (prakīrtaya) - proclaim;]
(Whatever else Pārtha has done, all that tell. Indeed, I do not perceive even a very subtle blameworthy thing of Jiṣṇu. The conduct of that hero, all that proclaim to me.)
Tell me everything else that Pārtha has done. I do not see even the slightest blameworthy thing in Jiṣṇu. Proclaim to me all the deeds of that hero. (3-39-7)

(I shall narrate to you, O dear one, this story of the great-souled one; divine, O tiger among the Kauravas, great and wonderful-like.)

गात्रसंस्पर्शसम्बन्धं त्र्यम्बकेण सहानघ। पार्थस्य देवदेवेन शृणु सम्यक्समागमम् ॥३-३९-९॥
gātrasaṁsparśasambandhaṁ tryambakeṇa sahānagha। pārthasya devadevena śṛṇu samyaksamāgamam ॥3-39-9॥
[गात्र (gātra) - limb; body; संस्पर्श (saṁsparśa) - touch; contact; सम्बन्धं (sambandhaṁ) - connection; relation; त्र्यम्बकेण (tryambakeṇa) - by Tryambaka; by the three-eyed one (Śiva); सह (saha) - with; together with; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; of Arjuna; देवदेवेन (devadevena) - by the god of gods; by the lord of gods; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; completely; समागमम् (samāgamam) - meeting; union;]
(The connection of bodily touch with Tryambaka, O sinless one; of Pārtha by the god of gods, hear the proper meeting.)
O sinless one, hear about the bodily contact and connection between Tryambaka (Śiva) and Pārtha (Arjuna), as properly brought about by the god of gods. (3-39-9)
युधिष्ठिरनियोगात्स जगामामितविक्रमः। शक्रं सुरेश्वरं द्रष्टुं देवदेवं च शङ्करम् ॥३-३९-१०॥
yudhiṣṭhira-niyogāt sa jagāma amita-vikramaḥ। śakraṃ sureśvaraṃ draṣṭuṃ devadevaṃ ca śaṅkaram ॥3-39-10॥
[युधिष्ठिरनियोगात् (yudhiṣṭhira-niyogāt) - from the command of Yudhiṣṭhira; सः (saḥ) - he; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अमितविक्रमः (amita-vikramaḥ) - of immeasurable valor; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; सुरेश्वरम् (sureśvaram) - lord of the gods; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; देवदेवम् (devadevam) - god of gods; च (ca) - and; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara;]
(From the command of Yudhiṣṭhira, he of immeasurable valor went to see Indra, the lord of the gods, and Śaṅkara, the god of gods.)

दिव्यं तद्धनुरादाय खड्गं च पुरुषर्षभः। महाबलो महाबाहुरर्जुनः कार्यसिद्धये ॥ दिशं ह्युदीचीं कौरव्यो हिमवच्छिखरं प्रति ॥३-३९-११॥
divyaṃ taddhanur-ādāya khaḍgaṃ ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ। mahābalo mahābāhur-arjunaḥ kāryasiddhaye ॥ diśaṃ hy-udīcīṃ kauravyo himavac-chikharaṃ prati ॥3-39-11॥

(Divine that bow having taken, sword and, bull among men, of great strength, mighty-armed Arjuna, for the accomplishment of the task, direction indeed northern, descendant of Kuru, Himalaya peak towards.)
The mighty-armed, greatly powerful Arjuna, the bull among men, having taken that divine bow and sword for the accomplishment of the task, went towards the northern direction, towards the peak of the Himalayas. (3-39-11)
ऐन्द्रिः स्थिरमना राजन्सर्वलोकमहारथः। त्वरया परया युक्तस्तपसे धृतनिश्चयः ॥ वनं कण्टकितं घोरमेक एवान्वपद्यत ॥३-३९-१२॥
aindriḥ sthiramanā rājan sarvalokamahārathaḥ। tvarayā parayā yuktas tapase dhṛtaniścayaḥ॥ vanaṃ kaṇṭakitaṃ ghoram eka evānvapadyata॥3-39-12॥
[ऐन्द्रिः (aindriḥ) - of Indra; स्थिरमना (sthiramanā) - steadfast-minded; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वलोकमहारथः (sarvalokamahārathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior of all worlds; त्वरया (tvarayā) - with haste; परया (parayā) - supreme; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; धृतनिश्चयः (dhṛtaniścayaḥ) - firm in resolve; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; कण्टकितं (kaṇṭakitaṃ) - thorny; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - entered;]

नानापुष्पफलोपेतं नानापक्षिनिषेवितम्। नानामृगगणाकीर्णं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥३-३९-१३॥

ततः प्रयाते कौन्तेये वनं मानुषवर्जितम्। शङ्खानां पटहानां च शब्दः समभवद्दिवि ॥३-३९-१४॥
tataḥ prayāte kaunteye vanaṃ mānuṣavarjitam। śaṅkhānāṃ paṭahānāṃ ca śabdaḥ samabhavad divi ॥3-39-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रयाते (prayāte) - having departed; कौन्तेये (kaunteye) - Kunti's son; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; मानुषवर्जितम् (mānuṣavarjitam) - devoid of humans; शङ्खानां (śaṅkhānāṃ) - of conches; पटहानां (paṭahānāṃ) - of drums; च (ca) - and; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; दिवि (divi) - in the sky;]

तत्रापश्यद्द्रुमान्फुल्लान्विहगैर्वल्गु नादितान्। नदीश्च बहुलावर्ता नीलवैडूर्यसंनिभाः ॥३-३९-१७॥
tatrāpaśyaddrumāṇ phullān vihagair valgu nāditān। nadīś ca bahulāvartā nīlavaiḍūryasaṃnibhāḥ ॥3-39-17॥

(Swan and duck sung forth; crane cried out likewise; male cuckoo cried and indeed crane and peacock resounded.)
The songs of swans and ducks, the cries of cranes, the calls of male cuckoos, and the resounding voices of cranes and peacocks were heard. (3-39-18)
मनोहरवनोपेतास्तस्मिन्नतिरथोऽर्जुनः। पुण्यशीतामलजलाः पश्यन्प्रीतमनाभवत् ॥३-३९-१९॥
manoharavanopetās tasmin natiratho'rjunaḥ। puṇyaśītāmalajalāḥ paśyan prītamanā'bhavat ॥3-39-19॥

(Having approached the charming forest there, the great chariot-warrior Arjuna, seeing the holy, cool, pure waters, became pleased in mind.)
When the great chariot-warrior Arjuna entered that charming forest and saw the holy, cool, and pure waters, his mind was filled with joy. (3-39-19)
रमणीये वनोद्देशे रममाणोऽर्जुनस्तदा। तपस्युग्रे वर्तमान उग्रतेजा महामनाः ॥३-३९-२०॥
ramaṇīye vanoddeśe ramamāṇo'rjunastadā। tapasyugre vartamāna ugratejā mahāmanāḥ ॥3-39-20॥
[रमणीये (ramaṇīye) - in the delightful; वनोद्देशे (vanoddeśe) - forest-region; रममाणः (ramamāṇaḥ) - rejoicing; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तदा (tadā) - then; तपस्य्-उग्रे (tapasy-ugre) - in severe penance; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - abiding; उग्रतेजाः (ugratejāḥ) - of fierce energy; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(In the delightful forest-region, rejoicing, Arjuna then, in severe penance abiding, of fierce energy, great-minded.)
At that time, Arjuna, rejoicing in the delightful forest region, was engaged in severe penance, possessing fierce energy and a great mind. (3-39-20)
दर्भचीरं निवस्याथ दण्डाजिनविभूषितः। पूर्णे पूर्णे त्रिरात्रे तु मासमेकं फलाशनः ॥ द्विगुणेनैव कालेन द्वितीयं मासमत्यगात् ॥३-३९-२१॥
darbhacīraṃ nivas yātha daṇḍājinavibhūṣitaḥ। pūrṇe pūrṇe trirātre tu māsamekaṃ phalāśanaḥ ॥ dviguṇenaiva kālena dvitīyaṃ māsamatyagāt ॥3-39-21॥
[दर्भचीरं (darbhacīram) - grass-cloth garment; निवस्य (nivasya) - having worn; अथ (atha) - then; दण्डाजिनविभूषितः (daṇḍājinavibhūṣitaḥ) - adorned with staff and deer skin; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - on completion; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - on completion; त्रिरात्रे (trirātre) - three nights; तु (tu) - but; मासमेकं (māsam ekaṃ) - one month; फलाशनः (phalāśanaḥ) - eating fruits; द्विगुणेनैव (dviguṇena eva) - with double (the time) indeed; कालेन (kālena) - with time; द्वितीयं (dvitīyam) - the second; मासम् (māsam) - month; अत्यगात् (atyagāt) - he passed;]
(Having worn a grass-cloth garment, then adorned with staff and deer skin; on completion, on completion, three nights but, one month eating fruits; with double the time indeed, with time, the second month he passed.)
Having put on a garment of grass-cloth and then adorned himself with a staff and deer skin, he ate only fruits for a month, completing three nights at a time; then, with double that period, he passed the second month. (3-39-21)
तृतीयमपि मासं स पक्षेणाहारमाचरन्। शीर्णं च पतितं भूमौ पर्णं समुपयुक्तवान् ॥३-३९-२२॥
tṛtīyam api māsaṃ sa pakṣeṇāhāram ācaran। śīrṇaṃ ca patitaṃ bhūmau parṇaṃ samupayuktavān ॥3-39-22॥
[तृतीयम् (tṛtīyam) - third; अपि (api) - also; मासम् (māsaṃ) - month; सः (sa) - he; पक्षेण (pakṣeṇa) - with leaves; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; आचरन् (ācaran) - practicing; शीर्णम् (śīrṇam) - withered; च (ca) - and; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; पर्णम् (parṇam) - leaf; समुपयुक्तवान् (samupayuktavān) - consumed;]
(He, also for the third month, practiced food with leaves; and he consumed withered and fallen leaf on the ground.)
For the third month as well, he sustained himself on leaves, consuming withered and fallen leaves from the ground. (3-39-22)
चतुर्थे त्वथ सम्प्राप्ते मासि पूर्णे ततः परम्। वायुभक्षो महाबाहुरभवत्पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥ ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्निरालम्बः पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रविष्ठितः ॥३-३९-२३॥
caturthe tvatha samprāpte māsi pūrṇe tataḥ param। vāyubhakṣo mahābāhurabhavatpāṇḍunandanaḥ ॥ ūrdhvabāhurnirālambaḥ pādāṅguṣṭhāgraviṣṭhitaḥ ॥3-39-23॥
[चतुर्थे (caturthe) - in the fourth; त्व (tva) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; मासि (māsi) - in the month; पूर्णे (pūrṇe) - full; ततः (tataḥ) - then; परम् (param) - after; वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - air-eater; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; पाण्डुनन्दनः (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) - son of Pāṇḍu; ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with arms raised; निरालम्बः (nirālambaḥ) - unsupported; पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रविष्ठितः (pādāṅguṣṭhāgraviṣṭhitaḥ) - standing on the tips of the big toes;]
(In the fourth, indeed, then, having arrived, in the month, full, then, after, air-eater, mighty-armed, became, son of Pāṇḍu. With arms raised, unsupported, standing on the tips of the big toes. (3-39-23))
When the fourth full month had arrived, then after that, the mighty-armed son of Pāṇḍu became an air-eater. He stood with his arms raised, unsupported, standing on the tips of his big toes. (3-39-23)
सदोपस्पर्शनाच्चास्य बभूवुरमितौजसः। विद्युदम्भोरुहनिभा जटास्तस्य महात्मनः ॥३-३९-२४॥
sadopasparśanāccāsya babhūvuramitaujasaḥ। vidyudambhoruhanibhā jaṭāstasya mahātmanaḥ ॥3-39-24॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; उपस्पर्शनात् (upasparśanāt) - from touching closely; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; अमितौजसः (amitaujasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy; विद्युत् (vidyut) - lightning; अम्भोरुह (ambhoruha) - lotus; निभा (nibhā) - resembling; जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; तस्य (tasya) - his; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Always from close contact and his became of immeasurable energy; lightning lotus resembling matted locks his of the great-souled.)
Because of always being in close contact, his matted locks, possessing immeasurable energy, became like lightning and lotus, belonging to that great-souled one. (3-39-24)
ततो महर्षयः सर्वे जग्मुर्देवं पिनाकिनम्। शितिकण्ठं महाभागं प्रणिपत्य प्रसाद्य च ॥सर्वे निवेदयामासुः कर्म तत्फल्गुनस्य ह ॥३-३९-२५॥
tato maharṣayaḥ sarve jagmur devaṃ pinākinam। śitikaṇṭhaṃ mahābhāgaṃ praṇipatya prasādya ca ॥sarve nivedayāmāsuḥ karma tat phalgunasya ha ॥3-39-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; देवम् (devaṃ) - the god; पिनाकिनम् (pinākinam) - the wielder of Pināka; शितिकण्ठम् (śitikaṇṭham) - the blue-throated one; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - the greatly fortunate; प्रणिपत्य (praṇipatya) - having bowed down; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निवेदयामासुः (nivedayāmāsuḥ) - they reported; कर्म (karma) - the act; तत् (tat) - that; फलगुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then all the great sages went to the god Pinākin, the blue-throated, the greatly fortunate one; having bowed down and propitiated (him), all reported that act of Phalguna indeed.)

एष पार्थो महातेजा हिमवत्पृष्ठमाश्रितः। उग्रे तपसि दुष्पारे स्थितो धूमाययन्दिशः ॥३-३९-२६॥
eṣa pārtho mahātejā himavatpṛṣṭhamāśritaḥ। ugre tapasi duṣpāre sthito dhūmāyayandiśaḥ ॥3-39-26॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (person); पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; हिमवत्पृष्ठम् (himavatpṛṣṭham) - Himalaya's back (mountain ridge); आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having resorted to; उग्रे (ugre) - intense; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; दुष्पारे (duṣpāre) - difficult to cross; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; धूमाययन् (dhūmāyayan) - causing to smoke; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions;]
(This son of Pṛthā, of great brilliance, having resorted to the Himalaya's back, standing in intense, difficult-to-cross austerity, causing the directions to smoke.)
This Arjuna, endowed with great energy, has taken refuge on the Himalaya's ridge, standing firm in severe and arduous austerities, making the directions appear as if filled with smoke. (3-39-26)
तस्य देवेश न वयं विद्मः सर्वे चिकीर्षितम्। सन्तापयति नः सर्वानसौ साधु निवार्यताम् ॥३-३९-२७॥
tasya deveśa na vayaṃ vidmaḥ sarve cikīrṣitam। santāpayati naḥ sarvān asau sādhu nivāryatām ॥3-39-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; देवेश (deveśa) - O lord of the gods; न (na) - not; वयम् (vayam) - we; विद्मः (vidmaḥ) - know; सर्वे (sarve) - all; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended action; सन्तापयति (santāpayati) - afflicts; नः (naḥ) - us; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; असौ (asau) - he; साधु (sādhu) - properly; निवार्यताम् (nivāryatām) - should be restrained;]
(Of him, O lord of the gods, not we know all intended action. He afflicts us all; he should properly be restrained.)
O lord of the gods, none of us know his intentions. He is afflicting all of us; he should indeed be restrained. (3-39-27)
महेश्वर उवाच॥

[महेश्वर (maheśvara) - great lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

शीघ्रं गच्छत संहृष्टा यथागतमतन्द्रिताः। अहमस्य विजानामि सङ्कल्पं मनसि स्थितम् ॥३-३९-२८॥
śīghraṃ gacchata saṃhṛṣṭā yathāgatamatandritāḥ। aham asya vijānāmi saṅkalpaṃ manasi sthitam ॥3-39-28॥
[शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; गच्छत (gacchata) - go (you all); संहृष्टा (saṃhṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as come; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - without sloth; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्य (asya) - of him; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - resolve; मनसि (manasi) - in the mind; स्थितम् (sthitam) - fixed;]
(Quickly go, joyful, as come, without sloth; I know his resolve fixed in the mind.)
Go quickly, joyfully, just as you came, without any sloth. I know the resolve that is fixed in his mind. (3-39-28)
नास्य स्वर्गस्पृहा काचिन्नैश्वर्यस्य न चायुषः। यत्त्वस्य काङ्क्षितं सर्वं तत्करिष्येऽहमद्य वै ॥३-३९-२९॥
nāsya svargaspṛhā kācin naiśvaryasya na cāyuṣaḥ। yat tvasya kāṅkṣitaṃ sarvaṃ tat kariṣye'ham adya vai॥3-39-29॥
[न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of him; स्वर्गस्पृहा (svargaspṛhā) - desire for heaven; काचित् (kācit) - any; नैश्वर्यस्य (naiśvaryasya) - of sovereignty; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - but; अस्य (asya) - of him; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Not of him is any desire for heaven, nor of sovereignty, nor of life; but whatever of him is desired, all that I shall do today indeed.)
He has no desire for heaven, nor for sovereignty, nor for life; but whatever he desires, all that I shall indeed do today. (3-39-29)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ते श्रुत्व शर्ववचनमृषयः सत्यवादिनः। प्रहृष्टमनसो जग्मुर्यथास्वं पुनराश्रमान् ॥३-३९-३०॥
te śrutvā śarvavacanam ṛṣayaḥ satyavādinaḥ। prahṛṣṭamanaso jagmur yathā svaṃ punar āśramān ॥3-39-30॥
[ते (te) - they; श्रुत्व (śrutvā) - having heard; शर्ववचनम् (śarvavacanam) - the words of Śarva (Śiva); ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; सत्यवादिनः (satyavādinaḥ) - truth-speakers; प्रहृष्टमनसः (prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ) - with delighted minds; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; यथा (yathā) - as; स्वम् (svam) - their own; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आश्रमान् (āśramān) - hermitages;]
(They, having heard the words of Śarva, the sages, truth-speakers, with delighted minds, went as (to) their own hermitages again.)
Having heard Śarva's words, the truthful sages, their minds delighted, returned once more to their own hermitages. (3-39-30)
