Pancharatra: Arjuna’s encounter with Shiva in the guise of a hunter.

गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु तपस्विषु महात्मसु। पिनाकपाणिर्भगवान्सर्वपापहरो हरः ॥३-४०-१॥
gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu tapasviṣu mahātmasu। pinākapāṇir bhagavān sarvapāpaharo haraḥ ॥3-40-1॥
[गतेषु (gateṣu) - having gone; in those who have departed; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; in them; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; in all; तपस्विषु (tapasviṣu) - ascetics; in ascetics; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - great-souled ones; in the great souls; पिनाकपाणिः (pinākapāṇiḥ) - Pinaka-holder; (one) whose hand holds the Pinaka bow; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; the blessed one; सर्वपापहरः (sarvapāpaharaḥ) - remover of all sins; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara; (another name for Śiva);]
(When all those ascetics, the great-souled ones, had departed, the Lord Hara, the remover of all sins, the Pinaka-holder, (remained).)
After all those great ascetics had departed, the blessed Lord Hara, the remover of all sins and wielder of the Pinaka bow, remained. (3-40-1)
कैरातं वेषमास्थाय काञ्चनद्रुमसंनिभम्। विभ्राजमानो वपुषा गिरिर्मेरुरिवापरः ॥३-४०-२॥
kairātaṃ veṣam āsthāya kāñcanadrumasaṃnibham। vibhrājamāno vapuṣā girir merur ivāparaḥ ॥3-40-2॥

Assuming the guise of a Kirāta, with a form shining like a golden tree, he appeared like another Mount Meru. (3-40-2)
श्रीमद्धनुरुपादाय शरांश्चाशीविषोपमान्। निष्पपात महार्चिष्मान्दहन्कक्षमिवानलः ॥३-४०-३॥
śrīmad-dhanur-upādāya śarāṁś cāśīviṣopamān। niṣpapāta mahārciṣmān dahan kakṣam ivānalaḥ ॥3-40-3॥
[श्रीमत् (śrīmat) - glorious; endowed with fortune; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken up; having assumed; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; आशीविष (āśīviṣa) - venomous snake; उपमान् (upamān) - comparable; like; निष्पपात (niṣpapāta) - sprang forth; leapt out; महा-अर्चिष्मान् (mahā-arciṣmān) - greatly radiant; of great flame; दहन् (dahan) - burning; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - forest; इव (iva) - like; as; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire;]
(Glorious bow having taken up, arrows and venomous snake-like, sprang forth greatly radiant, burning forest like fire.)

देव्या सहोमया श्रीमान्समानव्रतवेषया। नानावेषधरैर्हृष्टैर्भूतैरनुगतस्तदा ॥३-४०-४॥
devyā sahomayā śrīmān samānavrataveṣayā। nānāveṣadharaiḥ hṛṣṭaiḥ bhūtaiḥ anugataḥ tadā ॥3-40-4॥

किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नः स्त्रीभिश्चानु सहस्रशः। अशोभत तदा राजन्स देवोऽतीव भारत ॥३-४०-५॥
kirātaveṣapracchannaḥ strībhiś cānu sahasraśaḥ। aśobhata tadā rājans devo'tīva bhārata ॥3-40-5॥

O Bhārata, the god, exceedingly resplendent, then shone forth, disguised in the form of a Kirāta, together with thousands of women, O king. (3-40-5)
क्षणेन तद्वनं सर्वं निःशब्दमभवत्तदा। नादः प्रस्रवणानां च पक्षिणां चाप्युपारमत् ॥३-४०-६॥
kṣaṇena tad vanaṃ sarvaṃ niḥśabdam abhavat tadā। nādaḥ prasravaṇānāṃ ca pakṣiṇāṃ ca api upāramat ॥3-40-6॥
[क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; निःशब्दम् (niḥśabdam) - silent; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; प्रस्रवणानाम् (prasravaṇānām) - of the streams; च (ca) - and; पक्षिणाम् (pakṣiṇām) - of the birds; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपारमत् (upāramat) - ceased;]
(In an instant, that entire forest became silent then. The sound of the streams and also of the birds ceased.)

स संनिकर्षमागम्य पार्थस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। मूकं नाम दितेः पुत्रं ददर्शाद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥३-४०-७॥
sa saṁnikarṣam āgamya pārthasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ। mūkaṁ nāma diteḥ putraṁ dadarśa adbhutadarśanam ॥3-40-7॥
[स (sa) - he; सन्निकर्षम् (saṁnikarṣam) - proximity; आगम्य (āgamya) - having approached; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; अक्लिष्टकर्मणः (akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ) - of unwearied action; मूकम् (mūkam) - Mūka; नाम (nāma) - by name; दितेः (diteḥ) - of Diti; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; अद्भुतदर्शनम् (adbhutadarśanam) - of wonderful appearance;]
(He, having approached the proximity of Pārtha of unwearied action, saw Mūka by name, the son of Diti, of wonderful appearance.)
He came near Pārtha, who was tireless in action, and saw Mūka, the son of Diti, who had a wondrous appearance. (3-40-7)
वाराहं रूपमास्थाय तर्कयन्तमिवार्जुनम्। हन्तुं परमदुष्टात्मा तमुवाचाथ फल्गुनः ॥३-४०-८॥
vārāhaṃ rūpam āsthāya tarkayantam iva arjunam। hantuṃ paramaduṣṭātmā tam uvāca atha phalgunaḥ ॥3-40-8॥

Having assumed the form of a boar and debating like Arjuna in order to kill him, the extremely wicked-souled one was then addressed by Phalguna. (3-40-8)
गाण्डीवं धनुरादाय शरांश्चाशीविषोपमान्। सज्यं धनुर्वरं कृत्वा ज्याघोषेण निनादयन् ॥३-४०-९॥
gāṇḍīvaṃ dhanur ādāya śarāṃś cāśīviṣopamān। sajyaṃ dhanur varaṃ kṛtvā jyāghoṣeṇa ninādayan ॥3-40-9॥
[गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gāṇḍīva bow; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; च (ca) - and; आशीविष-उपमान् (āśīviṣa-upamān) - like poisonous serpents; सज्यम् (sajyam) - strung; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; वरम् (varam) - excellent; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; ज्या-घोषेण (jyā-ghoṣeṇa) - with the twang of the bowstring; निनादयन् (ninādayan) - making resound;]
(Having taken the Gāṇḍīva bow and arrows like poisonous serpents, having made the excellent bow strung, making resound with the twang of the bowstring.)
Taking up the Gāṇḍīva bow and arrows resembling poisonous serpents, stringing the excellent bow and making it resound with the twang of the bowstring. (3-40-9)
यन्मां प्रार्थयसे हन्तुमनागसमिहागतम्। तस्मात्त्वां पूर्वमेवाहं नेष्यामि यमसादनम् ॥३-४०-१०॥
yan māṃ prārthayase hantum anāgasam ihāgatam। tasmāt tvāṃ pūrvam eva ahaṃ neṣyāmi yamasādanam ॥3-40-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; प्रार्थयसे (prārthayase) - you request; हन्तुम् (hantum) - to kill; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent; इह (iha) - here; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; नेष्यामि (neṣyāmi) - will lead; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - abode of Yama;]
(Which me you request to kill, innocent, here arrived. Therefore you before indeed I will lead to the abode of Yama.)
Since you request to kill me, who am innocent and have come here, therefore I will send you to the abode of Yama before myself. (3-40-10)
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रहरिष्यन्तं फल्गुनं दृढधन्विनम्। किरातरूपी सहसा वारयामास शङ्करः ॥३-४०-११॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā prahariṣyantaṃ phalgunaṃ dṛḍhadhanvinam। kirātarūpī sahasā vārayāmāsa śaṅkaraḥ ॥3-40-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रहरिष्यन्तं (prahariṣyantam) - about to strike; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); दृढधन्विनम् (dṛḍhadhanvinam) - firm-bowed; किरातरूपी (kirātarūpī) - in the form of a Kirata; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; वारयामास (vārayāmāsa) - restrained; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Shankara;]
(Having seen him about to strike, Phalguna, firm-bowed, in the form of a Kirata, suddenly restrained Shankara.)
Seeing Phalguna (Arjuna), the firm-bowed, about to strike, Shankara, in the form of a Kirata, suddenly restrained him. (3-40-11)
मयैष प्रार्थितः पूर्वं नीलमेघसमप्रभः। अनादृत्यैव तद्वाक्यं प्रजहाराथ फल्गुनः ॥३-४०-१२॥
mayaiṣa prārthitaḥ pūrvaṃ nīlameghasamaprabhaḥ। anādṛtyaiva tadvākyaṃ prajahārātha phalgunaḥ ॥3-40-12॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; प्रार्थितः (prārthitaḥ) - requested; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - before; नीलमेघसमप्रभः (nīlameghasamaprabhaḥ) - having radiance like a dark cloud; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; प्रजहारा (prajahāra) - struck; अथ (atha) - then; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna);]
(By me this (one) was requested before, having radiance like a dark cloud; disregarding indeed that speech, then Phalguna struck.)
I had previously requested this one, who shines like a dark cloud; but disregarding those words, Phalguna (Arjuna) then struck. (3-40-12)
किरातश्च समं तस्मिन्नेकलक्ष्ये महाद्युतिः। प्रमुमोचाशनिप्रख्यं शरमग्निशिखोपमम् ॥३-४०-१३॥
kirātaś ca samaṃ tasmin nekalakṣye mahādyutiḥ। pramumocāśaniprakhyaṃ śaram agniśikhopamam ॥3-40-13॥
[किरातः (kirātaḥ) - the Kirāta; (a hunter or forest-dweller); च (ca) - and; समम् (samam) - together; equally; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; therein; एकलक्ष्ये (ekalakṣye) - at the single target; at one aim; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the greatly radiant one; the one of great splendor; प्रमुमोच (pramumoca) - released; let loose; आशनिप्रख्यम् (āśaniprakhyam) - like a thunderbolt; resembling a thunderbolt; शरम् (śaram) - arrow; अग्निशिखोपमम् (agniśikhopamam) - like a flame of fire; resembling a fire's tongue;]
(The Kirāta and (he), together, at that single target, the greatly radiant one released an arrow like a thunderbolt, resembling a flame of fire.)

तौ मुक्तौ सायकौ ताभ्यां समं तत्र निपेततुः। मूकस्य गात्रे विस्तीर्णे शैलसंहनने तदा ॥३-४०-१४॥

(Those two released arrows by those two together there fell on the body of Muka, broad, rock-solid, then.)

यथाशनिविनिष्पेषो वज्रस्येव च पर्वते। तथा तयोः संनिपातः शरयोरभवत्तदा ॥३-४०-१५॥

(Just as the crushing of a thunderbolt, like the vajra, and on the mountain; so the collision of the two, of the two arrows, happened then.)

(He, pierced by many arrows like by serpents with blazing mouths, died, having again assumed the rākṣasa form of Vibhīṣaṇa.)

ददर्शाथ ततो जिष्णुः पुरुषं काञ्चनप्रभम्। किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नं स्त्रीसहायममित्रहा ॥ तमब्रवीत्प्रीतमनाः कौन्तेयः प्रहसन्निव ॥३-४०-१७॥
dadarśātha tato jiṣṇuḥ puruṣaṃ kāñcanaprabham। kirātaveṣapracchannaṃ strīsahāyamamitrahā ॥ tamabravītpṛītamanāḥ kaunteyaḥ prahasanniva ॥3-40-17॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; काञ्चनप्रभम् (kāñcanaprabham) - golden-radiant; किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नं (kirātaveṣapracchannam) - disguised in hunter's attire; स्त्रीसहायम् (strīsahāyam) - accompanied by a woman; अमित्रहा (amitrahā) - destroyer of enemies; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; प्रीतमनाः (prītamanāḥ) - with a pleased mind; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; प्रहसन्निव (prahasanniva) - as if smiling;]
(He saw then thereafter the victorious one a man golden-radiant disguised in hunter's attire accompanied by a woman destroyer of enemies. Him said with a pleased mind the son of Kunti as if smiling. (3-40-17))
Then, the victorious Arjuna saw a golden-radiant man, disguised as a hunter, accompanied by a woman and destroyer of enemies. The son of Kunti, with a pleased mind, spoke to him as if smiling. (3-40-17)
को भवानटते शून्ये वने स्त्रीगणसंवृतः। न त्वमस्मिन्वने घोरे बिभेषि कनकप्रभ ॥३-४०-१८॥
ko bhavānaṭate śūnye vane strīgaṇasaṃvṛtaḥ। na tvamasminvane ghore bibheṣi kanakaprabha ॥3-40-18॥

(Who are you, O sir, wandering in the empty forest, surrounded by a group of women? Do you not fear in this terrible forest, O golden-radiant one?)

किमर्थं च त्वया विद्धो मृगोऽयं मत्परिग्रहः। मयाभिपन्नः पूर्वं हि राक्षसोऽयमिहागतः ॥३-४०-१९॥
kimarthaṃ ca tvayā viddho mṛgo'yaṃ matparigrahaḥ। mayābhipannaḥ pūrvaṃ hi rākṣaso'yamihāgataḥ ॥3-40-19॥

(For what reason and by you pierced deer this my possession; by me attacked previously indeed demon this here has come;)
For what reason did you pierce this deer, my possession? This demon, indeed, previously attacked by me, has come here. (3-40-19)
कामात्परिभवाद्वापि न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे। न ह्येष मृगयाधर्मो यस्त्वयाद्य कृतो मयि ॥ तेन त्वां भ्रंशयिष्यामि जीवितात्पर्वताश्रय ॥३-४०-२०॥
kāmāt paribhavād vā api na me jīvan vimokṣyase। na hi eṣa mṛgayā-dharmo yaḥ tvayā adya kṛtaḥ mayi ॥ tena tvām bhraṃśayiṣyāmi jīvitāt parvata-āśraya ॥3-40-20॥
[कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; परिभवाद् (paribhavād) - from insult; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; जीवन् (jīvan) - alive; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - you will be released; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; मृगया (mṛgayā) - hunting; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; यः (yaḥ) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; मयि (mayi) - unto me; तेन (tena) - therefore; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भ्रंशयिष्यामि (bhraṃśayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to fall; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - from life; पर्वताश्रय (parvata-āśraya) - mountain-dweller;]
(From desire or from insult even, not by me alive you will be released. Not indeed this is hunting-righteousness which by you today done unto me. Therefore you I will cause to fall from life, O mountain-dweller.)
Whether from desire or from insult, you will not be released alive by me. This is not the righteousness of hunting that you have done to me today. Therefore, O mountain-dweller, I will cause you to fall from life. (3-40-20)
इत्युक्तः पाण्डवेयेन किरातः प्रहसन्निव। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पाण्डवं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥३-४०-२१॥

(Thus addressed by the son of Pāṇḍu, the Kirāta, as if smiling, said with gentle speech to the Pāṇḍava, the ambidextrous one.)
Thus, when addressed by the son of Pāṇḍu, the Kirāta, as if smiling, spoke gently to the ambidextrous Pāṇḍava. (3-40-21)
ममैवायं लक्ष्यभूतः पूर्वमेव परिग्रहः। ममैव च प्रहारेण जीविताद्व्यवरोपितः ॥३-४०-२२॥
mamaiva ayaṃ lakṣyabhūtaḥ pūrvam eva parigrahaḥ। mamaiva ca prahāreṇa jīvitād vyavaropitaḥ ॥3-40-22॥

(Of me indeed this (one), having become the target, previously indeed (was) the acquisition; of me indeed and by the blow (he was) separated from life.)
This one was indeed my possession, having previously become my target; and by my blow, he was separated from life. (3-40-22)
दोषान्स्वान्नार्हसेऽन्यस्मै वक्तुं स्वबलदर्पितः। अभिषक्तोऽस्मि मन्दात्मन्न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे ॥३-४०-२३॥
doṣān svān nārhase 'nyasmai vaktum svabala-darpitaḥ। abhiṣakto 'smi mandātmanna me jīvan vimokṣyase॥3-40-23॥
[दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; (accusative plural of doṣa) स्वान् (svān) - your own; (accusative plural of sva) न (na) - not; अर्हसे (arhase) - you ought; (second person singular, present, of arh) अन्यस्मै (anyasmai) - to another; (dative singular of anya) वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; स्वबलदर्पितः (svabala-darpitaḥ) - proud of your own strength; अभिषक्तः (abhiṣaktaḥ) - afflicted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मन्दात्मन् (mandātman) - slow-minded one; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - you will be released; (second person singular, future, passive, of vi-muc);]
(Faults your own not you ought to another to speak, proud of your own strength. Afflicted I am, slow-minded one, not by me living you will be released. (3-40-23))
You should not speak of your own faults to another, being proud of your own strength. I am afflicted, slow-minded one; you will not be released alive by me. (3-40-23)
स्थिरो भवस्व मोक्ष्यामि सायकानशनीनिव। घटस्व परया शक्त्या मुञ्च त्वमपि सायकान् ॥३-४०-२४॥
sthiro bhavasva mokṣyāmi sāyakānaśanīniva। ghaṭasva parayā śaktyā muñca tvam api sāyakān ॥3-40-24॥

(Steady become, I will release arrows like a thunderbolt; exert yourself with supreme power, release you also arrows.)
Be steady; I will release arrows like a thunderbolt. Exert yourself with supreme power, you too release your arrows. (3-40-24)
ततस्तौ तत्र संरब्धौ गर्जमानौ मुहुर्मुहुः। शरैराशीविषाकारैस्ततक्षाते परस्परम् ॥३-४०-२५॥
tatastau tatra saṁrabdhau garjamānau muhurmuhuḥ। śarairāśīviṣākāraistatakṣāte parasparam ॥3-40-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; तत्र (tatra) - there; संरब्धौ (saṁrabdhau) - enraged; गर्जमानौ (garjamānau) - roaring; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuḥuḥ) - again and again; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; आशीविषाकारैः (āśīviṣākāraiḥ) - having the form of venomous serpents; ततक्षाते (tatakṣāte) - struck; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other;]
(Then those two there, enraged, roaring again and again, with arrows having the form of venomous serpents, struck each other.)
Then, those two, enraged and roaring repeatedly, struck each other there with arrows shaped like venomous serpents. (3-40-25)
ततोऽर्जुनः शरवर्षं किराते समवासृजत्। तत्प्रसन्नेन मनसा प्रतिजग्राह शङ्करः ॥३-४०-२६॥
tato'rjunaḥ śaravarṣaṃ kirāte samavāsṛjat। tatprasannena manasā pratijagrāha śaṅkaraḥ ॥3-40-26॥

(Then Arjuna completely released a rain of arrows at the Kirāta. That Śaṅkara, with a pleased mind, accepted.)

मुहूर्तं शरवर्षं तत्प्रतिगृह्य पिनाकधृक्। अक्षतेन शरीरेण तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥३-४०-२७॥
muhūrtaṃ śaravarṣaṃ tatpratigṛhya pinākadhṛk। akṣatena śarīreṇa tasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥3-40-27॥
[मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; शरवर्षम् (śaravarṣam) - arrow-rain; तत् (tat) - that; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; पिनाकधृक् (pinākadhṛk) - the wielder of Pināka; अक्षतेन (akṣatena) - uninjured; शरीरेण (śarīreṇa) - with (his) body; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (acalaḥ) - immovable;]
(For a moment, the rain of arrows, having received that, the wielder of Pināka, with uninjured body, stood like an immovable mountain.)

स दृष्ट्वा बाणवर्षं तन्मोघीभूतं धनञ्जयः। परमं विस्मयं चक्रे साधु साध्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥३-४०-२८॥
sa dṛṣṭvā bāṇavarṣaṃ tanmoghībhūtaṃ dhanañjayaḥ। paramaṃ vismayaṃ cakre sādhu sādhviti cābravīt ॥3-40-28॥
[स (sa) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बाणवर्षं (bāṇavarṣam) - shower of arrows; तत् (tat) - that; मोघीभूतं (moghībhūtam) - become ineffective; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); परमं (paramam) - supreme; विस्मयं (vismayam) - astonishment; चक्रे (cakre) - made; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(He, having seen that shower of arrows become ineffective, Dhananjaya made supreme astonishment, and said "Well done, well done" thus.)
Seeing that shower of arrows rendered ineffective, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) was greatly astonished and exclaimed, "Well done, well done." (3-40-28)
अहोऽयं सुकुमाराङ्गो हिमवच्छिखरालयः। गाण्डीवमुक्तान्नाराचान्प्रतिगृह्णात्यविह्वलः ॥३-४०-२९॥
aho'yaṃ sukumārāṅgo himavacchikharālayaḥ। gāṇḍīvamuktānnārācān pratigṛhṇātyavihvalaḥ ॥3-40-29॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; alas; अयम् (ayam) - this; सुकुमाराङ्गः (sukumārāṅgaḥ) - tender-limbed; हिमवत् (himavat) - Himalaya; शिखर (śikhara) - peak; आलयः (ālayaḥ) - dweller; गाण्डीव (gāṇḍīva) - Gandiva (Arjuna's bow); मुक्तान् (muktān) - released; नाराचान् (nārācān) - iron arrows; प्रतिगृह्णाति (pratigṛhṇāti) - receives; अविह्वलः (avihvalaḥ) - unperturbed;]
(Indeed, this tender-limbed dweller of the Himalaya peak receives the iron arrows released from the Gandiva unperturbed.)
Indeed, this tender-limbed one, dwelling on the peak of the Himalayas, receives the iron arrows shot from the Gandiva without being shaken. (3-40-29)
कोऽयं देवो भवेत्साक्षाद्रुद्रो यक्षः सुरेश्वरः। विद्यते हि गिरिश्रेष्ठे त्रिदशानां समागमः ॥३-४०-३०॥
ko'yaṃ devo bhavetsākṣādrudro yakṣaḥ sureśvaraḥ। vidyate hi giriśreṣṭhe tridaśānāṃ samāgamaḥ ॥3-40-30॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; देवः (devaḥ) - god; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; यक्षः (yakṣaḥ) - Yakṣa; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; हि (hi) - indeed; गिरिश्रेष्ठे (giriśreṣṭhe) - in the best of mountains; त्रिदशानाम् (tridaśānām) - of the gods; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - gathering;]
(Who is this god, may he be directly Rudra, Yakṣa, lord of the gods? Indeed, in the best of mountains, there is a gathering of the gods. (3-40-30))
Who is this god? Could he be Rudra himself, a Yakṣa, or the lord of the gods? Indeed, on the best of mountains, there is a gathering of the gods. (3-40-30)
न हि मद्बाणजालानामुत्सृष्टानां सहस्रशः। शक्तोऽन्यः सहितुं वेगमृते देवं पिनाकिनम् ॥३-४०-३१॥
na hi mad-bāṇa-jālānām utsṛṣṭānām sahasraśaḥ। śakto'nyaḥ sahituṃ vegam ṛte devaṃ pinākinam ॥3-40-31॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मद् (mad) - my; बाण (bāṇa) - arrow; जालानाम् (jālānām) - of the nets (multitudes); उत्सृष्टानाम् (utsṛṣṭānām) - released; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; सहितुम् (sahitum) - to withstand; वेगम् (vegam) - force; ऋते (ṛte) - except; देवम् (devam) - the god; पिनाकिनम् (pinākinam) - Pinākin (the wielder of Pināka, i.e., Śiva);]
(Not indeed my arrow-nets released by thousands able another to withstand force except the god Pinākin.)
Indeed, no one except the god Pinākin (Śiva) is able to withstand the force of my thousands of released arrows. (3-40-31)
देवो वा यदि वा यक्षो रुद्रादन्यो व्यवस्थितः। अहमेनं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नयामि यमसादनम् ॥३-४०-३२॥
devo vā yadi vā yakṣo rudrādanyo vyavasthitaḥ। ahamenaṃ śaraistīkṣṇairnayāmi yamasādanam ॥3-40-32॥
[देवः (devaḥ) - god; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; यक्षः (yakṣaḥ) - yakṣa; रुद्रात् (rudrāt) - from Rudra; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - situated; अहम् (aham) - I; एनम् (enam) - this (one); शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; तीक्ष्णैः (tīkṣṇaiḥ) - sharp; नयामि (nayāmi) - lead; यमसादनम् (yamasādanam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(God or if or yakṣa from Rudra other situated; I this (one) with arrows sharp lead to the abode of Yama;)
Whether he is a god or a yakṣa, or someone else apart from Rudra who is present here, I will lead him with sharp arrows to the abode of Yama. (3-40-32)
ततो हृष्टमना जिष्णुर्नाराचान्मर्मभेदिनः। व्यसृजच्छतधा राजन्मयूखानिव भास्करः ॥३-४०-३३॥
tato hṛṣṭamanā jiṣṇurnārācān marmabhedinaḥ। vyasṛjacchatadhā rājan mayūkhān iva bhāskaraḥ ॥3-40-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; हृष्टमना (hṛṣṭamanā) - with gladdened mind; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; नाराचान् (nārācān) - iron arrows; मर्मभेदिनः (marmabhedinaḥ) - piercing the vital parts; विसृजत् (vyasṛjat) - discharged; शतधा (śatadhā) - in hundreds; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मयूखान् (mayūkhān) - rays; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun;]
(Then, with gladdened mind, the victorious one discharged iron arrows piercing the vital parts in hundreds, O king, like the sun (sends forth) rays.)
Then, O king, the victorious hero, his mind elated, released hundreds of iron arrows that pierced the vital parts, just as the sun emits its rays. (3-40-33)
तान्प्रसन्नेन मनसा भगवाँल्लोकभावनः। शूलपाणिः प्रत्यगृह्णाच्छिलावर्षमिवाचलः ॥३-४०-३४॥
tān prasannena manasā bhagavāṁl lokabhāvanaḥ। śūlapāṇiḥ pratyagṛhṇāc chilāvarṣam ivāchalaḥ ॥3-40-34॥
[तान् (tān) - them; प्रसन्नेन (prasannena) - with pleased; मनसा (manasā) - mind; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - creator of the worlds; शूलपाणिः (śūlapāṇiḥ) - trident-handed; प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - accepted; शिलावर्षम् (śilāvarṣam) - shower of stones; इव (iva) - like; अचलः (achalaḥ) - mountain;]
(Them with pleased mind the blessed one, creator of the worlds, trident-handed, accepted, the shower of stones like a mountain.)
The blessed Lord, creator of the worlds, holding the trident, accepted them with a pleased mind, like a mountain accepts a shower of stones. (3-40-34)
क्षणेन क्षीणबाणोऽथ संवृत्तः फल्गुनस्तदा। वित्रासं च जगामाथ तं दृष्ट्वा शरसङ्क्षयम् ॥३-४०-३५॥
kṣaṇena kṣīṇabāṇo'tha saṁvṛttaḥ phalgunastadā। vitrāsaṁ ca jagāmātha taṁ dṛṣṭvā śarasaṅkṣayam ॥3-40-35॥
[क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; क्षीणबाणः (kṣīṇabāṇaḥ) - one whose arrows are exhausted; अथ (atha) - then; संवृत्तः (saṁvṛttaḥ) - became; फल्गुनः (phalguṇaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); तदा (tadā) - at that time; वित्रासम् (vitrāsam) - fear; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शरसङ्क्षयम् (śarasaṅkṣayam) - the exhaustion of arrows;]
(In a moment, Phalguna, whose arrows were exhausted, then became (such); at that time, having seen the exhaustion of arrows, he then went to fear.)
In a moment, Phalguna (Arjuna), whose arrows were exhausted, then became so; at that time, seeing the exhaustion of arrows, he then became fearful. (3-40-35)
चिन्तयामास जिष्णुस्तु भगवन्तं हुताशनम्। पुरस्तादक्षयौ दत्तौ तूणौ येनास्य खाण्डवे ॥३-४०-३६॥
cintayāmāsa jiṣṇus tu bhagavantaṃ hutāśanam। purastād akṣayau dattau tūṇau yenāsya khāṇḍave ॥3-40-36॥
[चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; he reflected; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; conqueror; तु (tu) - but; however; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - the divine one; the blessed one; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - the fire; the eater of oblations; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - before; previously; अक्षयौ (akṣayau) - inexhaustible (dual); दत्तौ (dattau) - were given (dual); तूणौ (tūṇau) - quivers (dual); येन (yena) - by whom; अस्य (asya) - to him; of him; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava (forest);]
(He thought the victorious one but the divine fire. Before inexhaustible (dual) were given quivers (dual) by whom to him in Khāṇḍava.)
But the victorious one (Arjuna) reflected upon the divine Fire. Previously, in Khāṇḍava, two inexhaustible quivers had been given to him by whom.
किं नु मोक्ष्यामि धनुषा यन्मे बाणाः क्षयं गताः। अयं च पुरुषः कोऽपि बाणान्ग्रसति सर्वशः ॥३-४०-३७॥
kiṁ nu mokṣyāmi dhanuṣā yan me bāṇāḥ kṣayaṁ gatāḥ। ayaṁ ca puruṣaḥ ko'pi bāṇān grasati sarvaśaḥ ॥3-40-37॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मोक्ष्यामि (mokṣyāmi) - shall I release; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - with the bow; यत् (yat) - because; मे (me) - my; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; क्षयं (kṣayam) - destruction; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; अयम् (ayam) - this; च (ca) - and; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कः (kaḥ) - who; अपि (api) - indeed; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; ग्रसति (grasati) - devours; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(What indeed shall I release with the bow, because my arrows have gone to destruction? This man also, who indeed devours arrows entirely.)
What can I shoot with my bow now, since all my arrows are spent? And who is this man who devours all the arrows? (3-40-37)
अहमेनं धनुष्कोट्या शूलाग्रेणेव कुञ्जरम्। नयामि दण्डधारस्य यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥३-४०-३८॥
aham enaṃ dhanuṣkoṭyā śūlāgreṇeva kuñjaram। nayāmi daṇḍadhārasya yamasya sadanaṃ prati ॥3-40-38॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एनम् (enam) - this (one); धनुष्कोट्या (dhanuṣkoṭyā) - with the end of the bow; शूलाग्रेण (śūlāgreṇa) - with the tip of the spear; इव (iva) - like; कुञ्जरम् (kuñjaram) - elephant; नयामि (nayāmi) - I lead; दण्डधारस्य (daṇḍadhārasya) - of the staff-holder; यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; सदनं (sadanam) - abode; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(I this (one) with the end of the bow, with the tip of the spear like (an) elephant, I lead of the staff-holder, of Yama, abode towards.)
I will lead this one, like an elephant with the tip of a spear or the end of a bow, to the abode of Yama, the staff-holder. (3-40-38)
सम्प्रायुध्यद्धनुष्कोट्या कौन्तेयः परवीरहा। तदप्यस्य धनुर्दिव्यं जग्रास गिरिगोचरः ॥३-४०-३९॥
samprāyudhyaddhanuṣkoṭyā kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā। tadapyasya dhanurdivyaṃ jagrāsa girigocaraḥ ॥3-40-39॥
[सम्प्रायुध्यत् (samprāyudhyat) - engaged in battle; धनुष्कोट्या (dhanuṣkoṭyā) - with the tip of the bow; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; तदपि (tad api) - even that; अस्य (asya) - his; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; जग्रास (jagrāsa) - devoured; गिरिगोचरः (girigocaraḥ) - mountain-dweller;]
(Engaged in battle with the tip of the bow, the son of Kunti, destroyer of enemy heroes—even that his divine bow was devoured by the mountain-dweller.)
While the son of Kunti, the destroyer of enemy heroes, was engaged in battle with the tip of his bow, even his divine bow was devoured by the mountain-dweller. (3-40-39)
ततोऽर्जुनो ग्रस्तधनुः खड्गपाणिरतिष्ठत। युद्धस्यान्तमभीप्सन्वै वेगेनाभिजगाम तम् ॥३-४०-४०॥
tato'ṛjuno grastadhanuḥ khaḍgapāṇir atiṣṭhata। yuddhasyāntam abhīpsan vai vegenābhijagāma tam ॥3-40-40॥

(Then Arjuna, with seized bow and sword in hand, stood. Desiring the end of the battle indeed, with speed, he approached him.)
Then Arjuna, grasping his bow and holding a sword in his hand, stood firm. Wishing for the end of the battle, he swiftly approached him. (3-40-40)
तस्य मूर्ध्नि शितं खड्गमसक्तं पर्वतेष्वपि। मुमोच भुजवीर्येण विक्रम्य कुरुनन्दनः ॥ तस्य मूर्धानमासाद्य पफालासिवरो हि सः ॥३-४०-४१॥

(Of him, on the head, the sharp sword stuck even in mountains, released by the strength of the arm, having exerted, O delight of the Kurus. Of him, having reached the head, the excellent sword indeed split it. (3-40-41))
O delight of the Kurus, having exerted himself, he released from the head of that man the sharp sword, which was stuck even in mountains, by the strength of his arm. Having reached his head, the excellent sword indeed split it. (3-40-41)
ततो वृक्षैः शिलाभिश्च योधयामास फल्गुनः। यथा वृक्षान्महाकायः प्रत्यगृह्णादथो शिलाः ॥३-४०-४२॥
tato vṛkṣaiḥ śilābhiś ca yodhayām āsa phalgunaḥ। yathā vṛkṣān mahākāyaḥ pratyagṛhṇād atho śilāḥ ॥3-40-42॥

(Then with trees and with stones, Phalguna began to fight; just as the great-bodied one seized trees, then (he seized) stones.)

किरातरूपी भगवांस्ततः पार्थो महाबलः। मुष्टिभिर्वज्रसंस्पर्शैर्धूममुत्पादयन्मुखे ॥ प्रजहार दुराधर्षे किरातसमरूपिणि ॥३-४०-४३॥

(Having the form of a Kirāta, the Lord then, Pārtha of great strength, with fists having the touch of a thunderbolt, causing smoke to arise on the face, struck the difficult to overcome one who had assumed the form of a Kirāta.)
Then Pārtha (Arjuna), of great strength, struck the Lord who had assumed the form of a Kirāta, with fists as hard as thunderbolts, causing smoke to arise on his face, in the battle with the Kirāta, who was difficult to overcome. (3-40-43)
ततः शक्राशनिसमैर्मुष्टिभिर्भृशदारुणैः। किरातरूपी भगवानर्दयामास फल्गुनम् ॥३-४०-४४॥
tataḥ śakrāśanisamairmuṣṭibhirbhṛśadāruṇaiḥ। kirātarūpī bhagavānardayāmāsa phalgunam ॥3-40-44॥

(Then, with fists very fierce and equal to Indra's thunderbolt, the Lord, assuming the form of a Kirāta, tormented Phalguna.)
Then the Lord, taking the form of a Kirāta, struck Phalguna (Arjuna) with very fierce fists, as powerful as Indra's thunderbolt, and tormented him. (3-40-44)
ततश्चटचटाशब्दः सुघोरः समजायत। पाण्डवस्य च मुष्टीनां किरातस्य च युध्यतः ॥३-४०-४५॥
tataś caṭacaṭāśabdaḥ sughoraḥ samajāyata। pāṇḍavasya ca muṣṭīnāṃ kirātasya ca yudhyataḥ ॥3-40-45॥

(Then a crackling sound very terrible arose; of the Pāṇḍava and of the fists, of the Kirāta and (while) fighting.)

सुमुहूर्तं महद्युद्धमासीत्तल्लोमहर्षणम्। भुजप्रहारसंयुक्तं वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥३-४०-४६॥

(For a good moment, a great battle was, that hair-raising, accompanied by arm-blows, like (the battle) of Vṛtra and Vāsava.)
For a considerable time, there was a great and hair-raising battle, filled with blows of arms, like the fight between Vṛtra and Indra. (3-40-46)
जहाराथ ततो जिष्णुः किरातमुरसा बली। पाण्डवं च विचेष्टन्तं किरातोऽप्यहनद्बलात् ॥३-४०-४७॥
jahārātha tato jiṣṇuḥ kirātam urasā balī। pāṇḍavaṃ ca viceṣṭantaṃ kirāto'py ahanad balāt ॥3-40-47॥
[जहार (jahāra) - seized; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; किरातम् (kirātam) - the Kirāta; उरसा (urasā) - with the chest; बली (balī) - the strong one; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; च (ca) - and; विचेष्टन्तम् (viceṣṭantam) - struggling; किरातः (kirātaḥ) - the Kirāta; अपि (api) - also; अहनत् (ahanat) - struck; बलात् (balāt) - with force;]
(Seized then thereafter the victorious one the Kirāta with the chest the strong one; the Pāṇḍava and struggling the Kirāta also struck with force.)
Then, the victorious strong one seized the Kirāta with his chest; and as the Pāṇḍava was struggling, the Kirāta also struck him forcefully. (3-40-47)
तयोर्भुजविनिष्पेषात्सङ्घर्षेणोरसोस्तथा। समजायत गात्रेषु पावकोऽङ्गारधूमवान् ॥३-४०-४८॥
tayor-bhuja-viniṣpeṣāt saṅgharṣeṇa urasoḥ tathā। samajāyata gātreṣu pāvakaḥ aṅgāra-dhūma-vān ॥3-40-48॥
[तयोः (tayor) - of those two; भुज (bhuja) - arms; विनिष्पेषात् (viniṣpeṣāt) - from the intense crushing; सङ्घर्षेण (saṅgharṣeṇa) - by friction; उरसोः (urasoḥ) - of the chests; तथा (tathā) - likewise; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on the limbs; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; अङ्गारधूमवान् (aṅgāra-dhūma-vān) - possessing embers and smoke;]
(Of those two, from the intense crushing of the arms, by the friction of the chests likewise, fire possessing embers and smoke arose on the limbs.)

तत एनं महादेवः पीड्य गात्रैः सुपीडितम्। तेजसा व्याक्रमद्रोषाच्चेतस्तस्य विमोहयन् ॥३-४०-४९॥
tat enaṃ mahādevaḥ pīḍya gātraiḥ supīḍitam। tejasā vyākramadroṣāccetastasya vimohayan ॥3-40-49॥

(Then Mahadeva, having afflicted him, with limbs well-afflicted, by brilliance and from anger, overcame (him), bewildering his mind.)

(Then by those who are pressed, by limbs, made into a mass as if appeared; Phalguna with limbs restrained by the god of gods, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, Phalguna, his limbs pressed and appearing as if made into a mass, was restrained by the god of gods. (3-40-50)
निरुच्छ्वासोऽभवच्चैव संनिरुद्धो महात्मना। ततः पपात संमूढस्ततः प्रीतोऽभवद्भवः ॥३-४०-५१॥
nirucchvāso'bhavaccaiva saṁniruddho mahātmanā। tataḥ papāta saṁmūḍhastataḥ prīto'bhavadbhavaḥ ॥3-40-51॥

bho bho phalguna tuṣṭo'smi karmaṇāpratimena te। śauryeṇānena dhṛtyā ca kṣatriyo nāsti te samaḥ॥3-40-52॥

(O O Phalguna, I am pleased by your unrivalled action, by this valour and by fortitude, and there is no warrior equal to you.)
O Phalguna, I am truly pleased with your unparalleled deeds, your valour and fortitude; there is no warrior equal to you. (3-40-52)
समं तेजश्च वीर्यं च ममाद्य तव चानघ। प्रीतस्तेऽहं महाबाहो पश्य मां पुरुषर्षभ ॥३-४०-५३॥
samaṁ tejaś ca vīryaṁ ca mamādya tava cānagha। prītas te'ham mahābāho paśya māṁ puruṣarṣabha ॥3-40-53॥
[समम् (samam) - equal; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; च (ca) - and; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - strength; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; ते (te) - with you; अहम् (aham) - I; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; पश्य (paśya) - see; माम् (mām) - me; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(Equal splendor and strength today of mine and yours and O sinless one; pleased with you I O mighty-armed see me O bull among men;)
Today, my splendor and strength are equal to yours, O sinless one. I am pleased with you, O mighty-armed; see me, O bull among men. (3-40-53)
ददानि ते विशालाक्ष चक्षुः पूर्वऋषिर्भवान्। विजेष्यसि रणे शत्रूनपि सर्वान्दिवौकसः ॥३-४०-५४॥
dadāni te viśālākṣa cakṣuḥ pūrvaṛṣirbhavān। vijeṣyasi raṇe śatrūnapi sarvān divaukasaḥ ॥3-40-54॥
[ददानि (dadāni) - I give; ते (te) - to you; विशालाक्ष (viśālākṣa) - O wide-eyed one; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - sight; पूर्वऋषिः (pūrvaṛṣiḥ) - former sage; भवान् (bhavān) - you; विजेष्यसि (vijeṣyasi) - you will conquer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; अपि (api) - even; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(I give to you, O wide-eyed one, sight; you are a former sage; you will conquer in battle even all the enemies, the dwellers of heaven.)
I grant you, O wide-eyed one, the power of sight; you were a sage in a previous life. You will defeat in battle even all the enemies among the dwellers of heaven. (3-40-54)

(He, having gone to the earth on his knees, having bowed with (his) head and, caused Hara (Śiva) to be pleased, Pārtha (Arjuna), conqueror of enemy cities.)
Pārtha (Arjuna), the conqueror of enemy cities, went down to the earth on his knees, bowed his head, and sought to please Hara (Śiva). (3-40-56)

भवगद्दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी प्राप्तोऽस्मीमं महागिरिम्। दयितं तव देवेश तापसालयमुत्तमम् ॥३-४०-५८॥
bhavagaddarśanākāṅkṣī prāpto'smīmaṃ mahāgirim। dayitaṃ tava deveśa tāpasālayamuttamam ॥3-40-58॥

(Desiring the sight of the one who has approached, I have arrived at this great mountain, the beloved, your, O lord of the gods, excellent hermitage.)
Desiring to see you, I have come to this great mountain, your beloved and excellent hermitage, O lord of the gods. (3-40-58)
प्रसादये त्वां भगवन्सर्वभूतनमस्कृत। न मे स्यादपराधोऽयं महादेवातिसाहसात् ॥३-४०-५९॥

(I propitiate you, O Lord, worshipped by all beings. Let not this offense of mine arise from great rashness, O Mahadeva.)
I seek your favor, O Lord, revered by all beings. May this offense of mine not be due to excessive boldness, O Mahadeva. (3-40-59)
कृतो मया यदज्ञानाद्विमर्दोऽयं त्वया सह। शरणं सम्प्रपन्नाय तत्क्षमस्वाद्य शङ्कर ॥३-४०-६०॥
kṛto mayā yad ajñānād vimardo'yaṃ tvayā saha। śaraṇaṃ samprapannāya tat kṣamasvā adya śaṅkara ॥3-40-60॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; accomplished; मया (mayā) - by me; यत् (yat) - which; अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; विमर्दः (vimardaḥ) - conflict; dispute; अयम् (ayam) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; by you; सह (saha) - together; with; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; shelter; सम्प्रपन्नाय (samprapannāya) - to one who has sought; तत् (tat) - that; क्षमस्व (kṣamasva) - forgive; अद्य (adya) - today; now; शङ्कर (śaṅkara) - O Śaṅkara;]
(That conflict which was done by me with you from ignorance, to one who has sought refuge, forgive that now, O Śaṅkara.)
O Śaṅkara, please forgive that conflict which I, out of ignorance, had with you; now, as I have sought your refuge. (3-40-60)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तमुवाच महातेजाः प्रहस्य वृषभध्वजः। प्रगृह्य रुचिरं बाहुं क्षान्तमित्येव फल्गुनम् ॥३-४०-६१॥
tam uvāca mahātejāḥ prahasya vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ। pragṛhya ruciraṃ bāhuṃ kṣāntam ityeva phalgunam ॥3-40-61॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; वृषभध्वजः (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner is the bull (Śiva); प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken; रुचिरं (ruciraṃ) - beautiful; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; क्षान्तम् (kṣāntam) - forgiven; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; फल्गुनम् (phalgunam) - Phalguna (Arjuna);]
(Him said of great splendor, having smiled, the one whose banner is the bull; having taken the beautiful arm, forgiven thus indeed Phalguna (Arjuna).)
The greatly radiant bull-bannered one (Śiva), having smiled, said to him; taking Phalguna's beautiful arm, he declared, 'You are forgiven.' (3-40-61)
