Pancharatra: Girisha grants Arjuna the weapon known as Pashupata, also called brahmashira.
भगवानुवाच॥

The Blessed One said.
नरस्त्वं पूर्वदेहे वै नारायणसहायवान्। बदर्यां तप्तवानुग्रं तपो वर्षायुतान्बहून् ॥३-४१-१॥
naras tvaṃ pūrvadehe vai nārāyaṇasahāyavān। badaryāṃ taptavān ugraṃ tapo varṣāyutān bahūn ॥3-41-1॥
[नरः (naraḥ) - man; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पूर्वदेहे (pūrvadehe) - in a previous body; वै (vai) - indeed; नारायणसहायवान् (nārāyaṇasahāyavān) - having Nārāyaṇa as companion; बदर्यां (badaryām) - in Badarī; तप्तवान् (taptavān) - you performed austerity; उग्रम् (ugram) - severe; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; वर्षायुतान् (varṣāyutān) - tens of thousands of years; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(You, as a man, indeed in a previous body, having Nārāyaṇa as companion, in Badarī, performed severe austerity for many tens of thousands of years.)
In your previous birth, you were a man who, with Nārāyaṇa as your companion, performed severe austerities in Badarī for many tens of thousands of years. (3-41-1)
त्वयि वा परमं तेजो विष्णौ वा पुरुषोत्तमे। युवाभ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां तेजसा धार्यते जगत् ॥३-४१-२॥
tvayi vā paramaṃ tejo viṣṇau vā puruṣottame। yuvābhyāṃ puruṣāgryābhyāṃ tejasā dhāryate jagat ॥3-41-2॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वा (vā) - or; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; विष्णौ (viṣṇau) - in Viṣṇu; वा (vā) - or; पुरुषोत्तमे (puruṣottame) - in the supreme person; युवाभ्याम् (yuvābhyām) - by you two; पुरुषाग्र्याभ्याम् (puruṣāgryābhyām) - by the foremost men; तेजसा (tejasā) - by splendor; धार्यते (dhāryate) - is supported; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(In you or in the supreme splendor, in Viṣṇu or in the supreme person, by you two, by the foremost men, by splendor, the world is supported.)
Whether in you or in Viṣṇu, the supreme person, it is by the splendor of you both, the foremost among men, that the world is sustained. (3-41-2)
शक्राभिषेके सुमहद्धनुर्जलदनिस्वनम्। प्रगृह्य दानवाः शस्तास्त्वया कृष्णेन च प्रभो ॥३-४१-३॥
śakrābhiṣeke sumahaddhanurjaladanisvanam। pragṛhya dānavāḥ śastāstvayā kṛṣṇena ca prabho ॥3-41-3॥
[शक्राभिषेके (śakrābhiṣeke) - at the anointing of Indra; सुमहद्धनुः (sumahaddhanuḥ) - very great bow; जलदनिस्वनम् (jaladanisvanam) - having the sound of thundercloud; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having taken up; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; शस्ताः (śastāḥ) - were destroyed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(At the anointing of Indra, having taken up the very great bow with the sound of thundercloud, the Dānavas were destroyed by you and by Kṛṣṇa, O lord.)
O lord, at the anointing of Indra, you and Kṛṣṇa, having taken up the mighty bow that sounded like a thundercloud, destroyed the Dānavas. (3-41-3)
एतत्तदेव गाण्डीवं तव पार्थ करोचितम्। मायामास्थाय यद्ग्रस्तं मया पुरुषसत्तम ॥ तूणौ चाप्यक्षयौ भूयस्तव पार्थ यथोचितौ ॥३-४१-४॥
etattadeva gāṇḍīvaṃ tava pārtha karocitam। māyāmāsthāya yadgrastaṃ mayā puruṣasattama ॥ tūṇau cāpyakṣayau bhūyastava pārtha yathocitau ॥3-41-4॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; तदेव (tadeva) - that indeed; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gandiva (bow); तव (tava) - your; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Partha; करोचितम् (karocitam) - properly done; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; यत् (yat) - which; ग्रस्तम् (grastam) - seized; मया (mayā) - by me; पुरुषसत्तम (puruṣasattama) - O best of men; तूणौ (tūṇau) - quivers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अक्षयौ (akṣayau) - inexhaustible; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; तव (tava) - your; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Partha; यथोचितौ (yathocitau) - as is proper;]
(This indeed Gandiva your O Partha properly done. Having resorted to illusion which was seized by me O best of men. Quivers and also inexhaustible again your O Partha as is proper. (3-41-4))
This is indeed your Gandiva, O Partha, restored as it should be. By resorting to illusion, it was seized by me, O best of men. The quivers and the inexhaustible bow are again yours, O Partha, as is proper. (3-41-4)
प्रीतिमानस्मि वै पार्थ तव सत्यपराक्रम। गृहाण वरमस्मत्तः काङ्क्षितं यन्नरर्षभ ॥३-४१-५॥
prītimānasmi vai pārtha tava satyaparākrama। gṛhāṇa varamasmattaḥ kāṅkṣitaṃ yannarārṣabha ॥3-41-5॥
[प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - possessed of affection; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; वै (vai) - indeed; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; तव (tava) - your; सत्यपराक्रम (satyaparākrama) - true in valor; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; वरम् (varam) - boon; अस्मत्तः (asmattaḥ) - from me; काङ्क्षितम् (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; यत् (yat) - which; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(I am possessed of affection indeed, O son of Pṛthā, your true valor; accept the boon from me, the desired which, O bull among men.)
O son of Pṛthā, truly valorous, I am indeed affectionate towards you; O bull among men, accept from me the boon you desire. (3-41-5)
न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्पुमान्मर्त्येषु मानद। दिवि वा विद्यते क्षत्रं त्वत्प्रधानमरिंदम ॥३-४१-६॥
na tvayā sadṛśaḥ kaścit pumān martyeṣu mānada। divi vā vidyate kṣatraṃ tvat-pradhānam ariṃdama ॥3-41-6॥
[न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; पुमान् (pumān) - man; मर्त्येषु (martyeṣu) - among mortals; मानद (mānada) - giver of honor; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; वा (vā) - or; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - kṣatriya (warrior class); त्वत्-प्रधानम् (tvat-pradhānam) - with you as chief; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Not by you equal any man among mortals, giver of honor; in heaven or exists kṣatriya with you as chief, destroyer of enemies. (3-41-6))
O giver of honor, among mortals there is no man equal to you; nor is there, even in heaven, a kṣatriya with you as chief, O destroyer of enemies. (3-41-6)
अर्जुन उवाच॥

भगवन्ददासि चेन्मह्यं कामं प्रीत्या वृषध्वज। कामये दिव्यमस्त्रं तद्घोरं पाशुपतं प्रभो ॥३-४१-७॥
bhagavandadāsi cenmahyaṁ kāmaṁ prītyā vṛṣadhvaja। kāmaye divyam astraṁ tad ghoram pāśupataṁ prabho ॥3-41-7॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; ददासि (dadāsi) - you give; चेत् (cet) - if; मह्यम् (mahyaṁ) - to me; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; वृषध्वज (vṛṣadhvaja) - O bull-bannered (Śiva); कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रं (astraṁ) - weapon; तत् (tat) - that; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; पाशुपतं (pāśupataṁ) - Pāśupata (weapon); प्रभो (prabho) - O master;]
(O Lord, if you give to me desire with affection, O bull-bannered, I desire the divine weapon, that terrible Pāśupata, O master.)
O Lord, if you are pleased to grant me a boon with affection, O bull-bannered one, I desire that divine and terrible Pāśupata weapon, O master. (3-41-7)
यत्तद्ब्रह्मशिरो नाम रौद्रं भीमपराक्रमम्। युगान्ते दारुणे प्राप्ते कृत्स्नं संहरते जगत् ॥३-४१-८॥
yattadbrahmaśiro nāma raudraṃ bhīmaparākramam। yugānte dāruṇe prāpte kṛtsnaṃ saṃharate jagat ॥3-41-8॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्मशिरः (brahmaśiraḥ) - Brahmaśiras (the Brahmaśiras weapon); नाम (nāma) - named; रौद्रं (raudram) - terrible; भीमपराक्रमम् (bhīmaparākramam) - of fearful prowess; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of the age; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - fierce; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having arrived; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; संहरते (saṃharate) - destroys; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Which that Brahmaśiras named terrible of fearful prowess at the end of the age fierce having arrived entire destroys the world.)
That which is called the Brahmaśiras, terrible and of fearful prowess, destroys the entire world when the fierce end of the age arrives. (3-41-8)
दहेयं येन सङ्ग्रामे दानवान्राक्षसांस्तथा। भूतानि च पिशाचांश्च गन्धर्वानथ पन्नगान् ॥३-४१-९॥
daheyaṃ yena saṅgrāme dānavānrākṣasāṃstathā। bhūtāni ca piśācāṃśca gandharvānatha pannagān ॥3-41-9॥
[दहेयं (daheyaṃ) - I may burn; (from √dah, to burn, optative, first person singular); येन (yena) - by which; (instrumental singular of yat, which); सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; (locative singular of saṅgrāma, battle); दानवान् (dānavān) - Dānavas; (accusative plural of dānava, a class of demons); राक्षसांश् (rākṣasāṃś) - Rākṣasas; (accusative plural of rākṣasa, demons); तथा (tathā) - also; (in that way, likewise); भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; (accusative plural of bhūta, beings); च (ca) - and; (conjunction); पिशाचान् (piśācān) - Piśācas; (accusative plural of piśāca, flesh-eating spirits); च (ca) - and; (conjunction); गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - Gandharvas; (accusative plural of gandharva, celestial musicians); अथ (atha) - and; (then, also); पन्नगान् (pannagān) - serpents; (accusative plural of pannaga, serpent beings);]
(I may burn by which in battle Dānavas, Rākṣasas also, beings and Piśācas and Gandharvas and serpents.)
By which I may burn in battle the Dānavas, Rākṣasas, beings, Piśācas, Gandharvas, and serpents. (3-41-9)
यतः शूलसहस्राणि गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः। शराश्चाशीविषाकाराः सम्भवन्त्यनुमन्त्रिताः ॥३-४१-१०॥
yataḥ śūlasahasrāṇi gadāś cogra-pradarśanāḥ। śarāś cāśīviṣākārāḥ sambhavanty anumātritāḥ ॥3-41-10॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; शूलसहस्राणि (śūla-sahasrāṇi) - thousands of spears; गदाः (gadāḥ) - maces; च (ca) - and; उग्रप्रदर्शनाः (ugra-pradarśanāḥ) - of fierce appearance; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; च (ca) - and; आशीविषाकाराः (āśīviṣa-ākārāḥ) - having the form of venomous serpents; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - arise; अनुमन्त्रिताः (anumātritāḥ) - being enchanted by mantras;]
(From whom thousands of spears, maces of fierce appearance, and arrows having the form of venomous serpents arise, being enchanted by mantras.)
From him, thousands of spears, maces of fierce appearance, and arrows shaped like venomous serpents arise, all empowered by mantras. (3-41-10)
युध्येयं येन भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च कृपेण च। सूतपुत्रेण च रणे नित्यं कटुकभाषिणा ॥३-४१-११॥
yudhye yaṁ yena bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca। sūtaputreṇa ca raṇe nityaṁ kaṭukabhāṣiṇā ॥3-41-11॥
[युध्येयं (yudhye yaṁ) - I would fight; येन (yena) - by whom; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; च (ca) - and; कृपेण (kṛpeṇa) - by Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; सूतपुत्रेण (sūtaputreṇa) - by the son of the charioteer; च (ca) - and; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; कटुकभाषिणा (kaṭukabhāṣiṇā) - with the harsh-speaking one;]
(I would fight by whom, by Bhīṣma, by Droṇa and by Kṛpa and by the son of the charioteer and in battle always with the harsh-speaking one.)
I would fight with anyone by whom Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, and the son of the charioteer, who always speaks harshly in battle, are present. (3-41-11)
एष मे प्रथमः कामो भगवन्भगनेत्रहन्। त्वत्प्रसादाद्विनिर्वृत्तः समर्थः स्यामहं यथा ॥३-४१-१२॥
eṣa me prathamaḥ kāmo bhagavan-bhaganetrahan। tvat-prasādād vinirvṛttaḥ samarthaḥ syām ahaṃ yathā ॥3-41-12॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - my; प्रथमः (prathamaḥ) - first; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; भगनेत्रहन् (bhaganetrahan) - destroyer of Bhaga's eye; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; विनिर्वृत्तः (vinirvṛttaḥ) - fulfilled; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; स्याम् (syām) - may I be; अहम् (aham) - I; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(This my first desire, O Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eye; by your grace fulfilled, capable may I be as I;)
O Lord, destroyer of Bhaga's eye, this is my first desire: by your grace, may I be fulfilled and capable as I wish. (3-41-12)

ददानि तेऽस्त्रं दयितमहं पाशुपतं महत्। समर्थो धारणे मोक्षे संहारे चापि पाण्डव ॥३-४१-१३॥
dadāni te'straṃ dayitam ahaṃ pāśupataṃ mahat। samartho dhāraṇe mokṣe saṃhāre cāpi pāṇḍava ॥3-41-13॥
[ददानि (dadāni) - I give; ते (te) - to you; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; दयितम् (dayitam) - beloved; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पाशुपतं (pāśupataṃ) - Pāśupata; महत् (mahat) - great; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; धारणे (dhāraṇe) - in holding; मोक्षे (mokṣe) - in releasing; संहारे (saṃhāre) - in destruction; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava;]
(I give to you the beloved weapon, I, the great Pāśupata; capable in holding, in releasing, in destruction, and also, O Pāṇḍava.)
O Pāṇḍava, I give you the beloved great Pāśupata weapon, which is capable of being held, released, and withdrawn.
नैतद्वेद महेन्द्रोऽपि न यमो न च यक्षराट्। वरुणो वाथ वा वायुः कुतो वेत्स्यन्ति मानवाः ॥३-४१-१४॥
naitadveda mahendro'pi na yamo na ca yakṣarāṭ। varuṇo vātha vā vāyuḥ kuto vetsyanti mānavāḥ ॥3-41-14॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; वेद (veda) - knows; महेन्द्रः (mahendraḥ) - the great Indra; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; यक्षराट् (yakṣarāṭ) - the king of Yakṣas; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; वा (vā) - or; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; वेत्स्यन्ति (vetsyanti) - will know; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans;]
(Not this knows the great Indra even, not Yama, not and the king of Yakṣas; Varuṇa or or or Vāyu; whence will know humans?)
Even the great Indra does not know this, nor Yama, nor the king of the Yakṣas; neither Varuṇa nor Vāyu—so how could humans possibly know? (3-41-14)
न त्वेतत्सहसा पार्थ मोक्तव्यं पुरुषे क्वचित्। जगद्विनिर्दहेत्सर्वमल्पतेजसि पातितम् ॥३-४१-१५॥
na tv etat sahasā pārtha moktavyaṃ puruṣe kvacit। jagad vinirdahyet sarvam alpa-tejasi pātitam ॥3-41-15॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एतत् (etat) - this; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; मोक्तव्यम् (moktavyam) - to be spoken; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - to a person; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; जगत् (jagat) - the world; विनिर्दहेत् (vinirdahyet) - might completely burn; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अल्पतेजसि (alpa-tejasi) - in one of little energy; पातितम् (pātitam) - fallen;]
(But this, O Pārtha, is not to be spoken suddenly to any person anywhere; the world might be completely burned, all fallen in one of little energy.)
But, O Pārtha, this should never be spoken suddenly to any person; for if it is imparted to one of little energy, the entire world, having fallen, might be completely destroyed. (3-41-15)
अवध्यो नाम नास्त्यस्य त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे। मनसा चक्षुषा वाचा धनुषा च निपात्यते ॥३-४१-१६॥
avadhyo nāma nāsty asya trailokye sacarācare। manasā cakṣuṣā vācā dhanuṣā ca nipātyate ॥3-41-16॥
[अवध्यः (avadhyaḥ) - not to be slain; नाम (nāma) - indeed; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; अस्य (asya) - of him; त्रैलोक्ये (trailokye) - in the three worlds; सचराचरे (sacarācare) - among moving and unmoving beings; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - by eye; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - by bow; च (ca) - and; निपात्यते (nipātyate) - is struck down;]
(Not to be slain indeed not is of him in the three worlds among moving and unmoving beings; by mind, by eye, by speech, by bow and is struck down.)
He is indeed not to be slain; in the three worlds, among all moving and unmoving beings, he cannot be struck down by mind, by eye, by speech, or by bow. (3-41-16)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
तच्छ्रुत्वा त्वरितः पार्थः शुचिर्भूत्वा समाहितः। उपसङ्गृह्य विश्वेशमधीष्वेति च सोऽब्रवीत् ॥३-४१-१७॥
tacchrutvā tvaritaḥ pārthaḥ śucirbhūtvā samāhitaḥ। upasaṅgṛhya viśveśam adhīṣveti ca so'bravīt ॥3-41-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quick; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna, son of Pritha); शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected (in mind); उपसङ्गृह्य (upasaṅgṛhya) - having approached; विश्वेशम् (viśveśam) - Lord of the universe; अधीष्व (adhīṣva) - recite (imperative); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(That having heard, quick Pārtha, having become pure, collected (in mind), having approached the Lord of the universe, "Recite" thus and he said.)
Having heard that, the quick Pārtha (Arjuna), after purifying himself and collecting his mind, approached the Lord of the universe and said, "Recite." (3-41-17)
ततस्त्वध्यापयामास सरहस्य निवर्तनम्। तदस्त्रं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठं मूर्तिमन्तमिवान्तकम् ॥३-४१-१८॥
tatastv adhyāpayām āsa sarahasya nivartanam। tad astraṃ pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhaṃ mūrtimantam ivāntakam ॥3-41-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्व् (tv) - to you; अध्यापयाम् (adhyāpayām) - caused to be taught; आस (āsa) - he did; स (sa) - that; रहस्य (rahasya) - secret; निवर्तनम् (nivartanam) - return; तत् (tat) - that; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठं (pāṇḍava-śreṣṭham) - best of the Pāṇḍavas; मूर्तिमन्तम् (mūrtimantam) - embodied; इव (iva) - like; अन्तकम् (antakam) - destroyer;]
(Then to you he caused to be taught the secret return; that missile, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, embodied like the destroyer.)
Then he taught you the secret of withdrawal; that missile, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, was embodied like the destroyer. (3-41-18)
उपतस्थे महात्मानं यथा त्र्यक्षमुमापतिम्। प्रतिजग्राह तच्चापि प्रीतिमानर्जुनस्तदा ॥३-४१-१९॥
upatasthe mahātmānaṃ yathā tryakṣam umāpatim। pratijagrāha tac cāpi prītimān arjunaḥ tadā ॥3-41-19॥
[उपतस्थे (upatasthe) - approached; (from upa-√sthā); महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled one; (mahā-atman); यथा (yathā) - just as; as; त्र्यक्षम् (tryakṣam) - three-eyed; (tri-akṣa); उमापतिम् (umāpatim) - consort of Umā; (Umā-pati); प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; accepted; (pra-ti-√grah); तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - joyful; pleased; (prīti-mān); अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Approached the great-souled one just as (one approaches) the three-eyed consort of Umā. Received that also, the joyful Arjuna then.)
He approached the great-souled one as one would approach the three-eyed lord, Umā's consort. Arjuna, full of joy, then received that as well. (3-41-19)
ततश्चचाल पृथिवी सपर्वतवनद्रुमा। ससागरवनोद्देशा सग्रामनगराकरा ॥३-४१-२०॥
tataś cacāla pṛthivī sa-parvata-vana-drumā। sa-sāgara-vana-uddeśā sa-grāma-nagara-ākarā ॥3-41-20॥

(Then and shook earth with mountains, forests, trees; with oceans, forest regions; with villages, cities, forms.)
Then the earth, along with its mountains, forests, and trees, together with its oceans, forest regions, villages, and cities, shook. (3-41-20)
शङ्खदुन्दुभिघोषाश्च भेरीणां च सहस्रशः। तस्मिन्मुहूर्ते सम्प्राप्ते निर्घातश्च महानभूत् ॥३-४१-२१॥
śaṅkhadundubhighoṣāś ca bherīṇāṃ ca sahasraśaḥ। tasmin muhūrte samprāpte nirghātaś ca mahān abhūt ॥3-41-21॥
[शङ्ख (śaṅkha) - conch; दुन्दुभि (dundubhi) - drum; घोषाः (ghoṣāḥ) - sounds; च (ca) - and; भेरीणां (bherīṇām) - of kettledrums; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; मुहूर्ते (muhūrte) - moment; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; निर्घातः (nirghātaḥ) - thunderclap; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose;]
(Conch, drum sounds and of kettledrums and by thousands; in that moment having arrived, thunderclap and great arose.)
At that very moment, the sounds of conches, drums, and thousands of kettledrums arose, and a great thunderclap occurred. (3-41-21)
अथास्त्रं जाज्वलद्घोरं पाण्डवस्यामितौजसः। मूर्तिमद्विष्ठितं पार्श्वे ददृशुर्देवदानवाः ॥३-४१-२२॥
athāstraṃ jājvaladghoraṃ pāṇḍavasyāmitaujasaḥ। mūrtimadviṣṭhitaṃ pārśve dadṛśurdevadānavāḥ ॥3-41-22॥

(Then the blazing, terrible missile of the Pāṇḍava of immeasurable energy, embodied, standing at the side, the gods and the demons saw.)

स्पृष्टस्य च त्र्यम्बकेन फल्गुनस्यामितौजसः। यत्किञ्चिदशुभं देहे तत्सर्वं नाशमेयिवत् ॥३-४१-२३॥
spṛṣṭasya ca tryambakena phalgunasya amitaujasaḥ। yatkiñcidaśubhaṃ dehe tatsarvaṃ nāśameyivat ॥3-41-23॥

(Of the touched and by Tryambaka, of Phalguna of immeasurable energy, whatever little inauspicious (thing) in the body, that all would go to destruction.)
Whatever inauspiciousness was present in the body of Phalguna of immeasurable energy, touched by Tryambaka, all of that was destroyed. (3-41-23)
स्वर्गं गच्छेत्यनुज्ञातस्त्र्यम्बकेन तदार्जुनः। प्रणम्य शिरसा पार्थः प्राञ्जलिर्देवमैक्षत ॥३-४१-२४॥
svargaṃ gacchetyanujñātas tryambakena tadārjunaḥ। praṇamya śirasā pārthaḥ prāñjalir devam aikṣata ॥3-41-24॥

Having been permitted by Tryambaka with the words "Go to heaven," then Arjuna, Pārtha, having bowed his head and with joined palms, looked at the god. (3-41-24)
ततः प्रभुस्त्रिदिवनिवासिनां वशी; महामतिर्गिरिश उमापतिः शिवः। धनुर्महद्दितिजपिशाचसूदनं; ददौ भवः पुरुषवराय गाण्डिवम् ॥३-४१-२५॥
tataḥ prabhus tridiva-nivāsināṃ vaśī; mahāmatis giriśa umāpatiḥ śivaḥ. dhanur mahad ditija-piśāca-sūdanam; dadau bhavaḥ puruṣavarāya gāṇḍivam ॥3-41-25॥

(Then the lord, controller of the residents of heaven, great-minded, lord of the mountains, husband of Umā, Śiva, gave the great bow, destroyer of demons and spirits, Bhava gave to the best of men the Gāṇḍīva.)

ततः शुभं गिरिवरमीश्वरस्तदा; सहोमया सिततटसानुकन्दरम्। विहाय तं पतगमहर्षिसेवितं; जगाम खं पुरुषवरस्य पश्यतः ॥३-४१-२६॥
tataḥ śubhaṃ girivaram īśvaras tadā; sahomayā sitataṭa-sānu-kandaram. vihāya taṃ pataga-maharṣi-sevitam; jagāma khaṃ puruṣavarasya paśyataḥ ॥3-41-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; गिरिवरम् (girivaram) - excellent mountain; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; तदा (tadā) - then; सहोमया (sahomayā) - with Umā; सिततट (sitataṭa) - white-banked; सानु (sānu) - peak; कन्दरम् (kandaram) - cave; विहाय (vihāya) - having left; तं (tam) - that; पतग (pataga) - bird; महर्षि (maharṣi) - great sage; सेवितं (sevitam) - attended; जगाम (jagāma) - went; खं (kham) - sky; पुरुषवरस्य (puruṣavarasya) - of the best of men; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while seeing;]
(Then the lord, having left the auspicious excellent mountain with Umā, the white-banked peak and cave, that was attended by birds and great sages, went to the sky while the best of men was seeing.)
Then the lord, together with Umā, left the auspicious excellent mountain with its white-banked peaks and caves, which was frequented by birds and great sages, and ascended into the sky as the best of men looked on. (3-41-26)
