gateṣu lokapāleṣu pārthaḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ। cintayāmāsa rājendra devarājarathāgamam ॥3-43-1॥
[गतेषु (gateṣu) - having gone; in those who have departed; लोकपालेषु (lokapāleṣu) - in the guardians of the worlds; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; (Arjuna, son of Pritha); शत्रुनिबर्हणः (śatrunibarhaṇaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; he pondered; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; best of kings; देवराजरथागमम् (devarājarathāgamam) - the arrival of the chariot of the king of the gods (Indra);]
(When the guardians of the worlds had departed, Pārtha, destroyer of enemies, thought, O king, about the arrival of the chariot of the king of the gods.)
When the guardians of the worlds had left, Pārtha, the destroyer of enemies, pondered, O king, about the arrival of the chariot of the king of the gods (Indra). (3-43-1)
ततश्चिन्तयमानस्य गुडाकेशस्य धीमतः। रथो मातलिसंयुक्त आजगाम महाप्रभः ॥३-४३-२॥
tataś cintayamānasya guḍākeśasya dhīmataḥ। ratho mātalisaṃyukta ājagāma mahāprabhaḥ ॥3-43-2॥

(Then, as the wise Guḍākeśa was thinking, the chariot, accompanied by Mātali, greatly splendid, came.)
Then, as the wise Guḍākeśa was reflecting, the magnificent chariot, with Mātali as its charioteer, arrived. (3-43-2)
नभो वितिमिरं कुर्वञ्जलदान्पाटयन्निव। दिशः सम्पूरयन्नादैर्महामेघरवोपमैः ॥३-४३-३॥
nabho vitimiraṃ kurvañ jaladān pāṭayann iva। diśaḥ sampūrayann ādair mahāmegharavopamaiḥ ॥3-43-3॥
[नभो (nabhaḥ) - sky; वितिमिरं (vitimiraṃ) - free from darkness; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - making; जलदान् (jaladān) - clouds; पाटयन् (pāṭayan) - tearing; इव (iva) - as if; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सम्पूरयन् (sampūrayan) - filling; आदैः (ādaiḥ) - with sounds; महामेघ (mahāmegha) - great cloud; रव (rava) - roar; उपमैः (upamaiḥ) - with similes;]
(Making the sky free from darkness, tearing the clouds as if, filling the directions with sounds with similes of the roar of great clouds.)
He made the sky free from darkness, as if tearing apart the clouds, and filled all directions with sounds like the roar of great clouds. (3-43-3)
असयः शक्तयो भीमा गदाश्चोग्रप्रदर्शनाः। दिव्यप्रभावाः प्रासाश्च विद्युतश्च महाप्रभाः ॥३-४३-४॥
asayaḥ śaktayo bhīmā gadāś cogra-pradarśanāḥ। divya-prabhāvāḥ prāsāś ca vidyutaś ca mahā-prabhāḥ ॥3-43-4॥
[असयः (asayaḥ) - swords; शक्तयः (śaktayaḥ) - spears; भीमा (bhīmā) - terrible; गदाः (gadāḥ) - maces; च (ca) - and; उग्रप्रदर्शनाः (ugra-pradarśanāḥ) - of fierce appearance; दिव्यप्रभावाः (divya-prabhāvāḥ) - of divine power; प्रासाः (prāsāḥ) - javelins; च (ca) - and; विद्युतः (vidyutaḥ) - lightnings; च (ca) - and; महाप्रभाः (mahā-prabhāḥ) - of great radiance;]
(Swords, spears, terrible maces and of fierce appearance; of divine power, javelins and lightnings and of great radiance.)
There were swords, spears, terrible maces of fierce appearance, weapons of divine power, javelins, and lightnings, all of great radiance. (3-43-4)
तथैवाशनयस्तत्र चक्रयुक्ता हुडागुडाः। वायुस्फोटाः सनिर्घाता बर्हिमेघनिभस्वनाः ॥३-४३-५॥
tathaivāśanayastatra cakrayuktā huḍāguḍāḥ। vāyusphoṭāḥ sanirghātā barhimeghanibhasvanāḥ ॥3-43-5॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; thus; just so; अशनयः (aśanayaḥ) - thunderbolts; lightning; तत्र (tatra) - there; in that place; चक्रयुक्ताः (cakrayuktāḥ) - fitted with wheels; wheel-equipped; हुडागुडाः (huḍāguḍāḥ) - roaring; rumbling; वायुस्फोटाः (vāyusphoṭāḥ) - wind-blasts; gusts of wind; सनिर्घाताः (sanirghātāḥ) - with thunderclaps; accompanied by thunder; बर्हिमेघनिभस्वनाः (barhimeghanibhasvanāḥ) - having sounds like great clouds; resembling the sound of mighty clouds;]
(In the same manner, thunderbolts there, fitted with wheels, roaring; wind-blasts with thunderclaps, having sounds like great clouds.)

तत्र नागा महाकाया ज्वलितास्याः सुदारुणाः। सिताभ्रकूटप्रतिमाः संहताश्च यथोपलाः ॥३-४३-६॥
tatra nāgā mahākāyā jvalitāsyāḥ sudāruṇāḥ। sitābhra-kūṭa-pratimāḥ saṃhatāś ca yathopalāḥ ॥3-43-6॥

(There serpents great-bodied with blazing mouths very fierce white cloud peak like clustered and like stones.)

दश वाजिसहस्राणि हरीणां वातरंहसाम्। वहन्ति यं नेत्रमुषं दिव्यं मायामयं रथम् ॥३-४३-७॥
daśa vāji-sahasrāṇi harīṇāṃ vāta-raṃhasām। vahanti yaṃ netram-uṣam divyaṃ māyā-mayaṃ ratham ॥3-43-7॥

(Ten thousand horses of steeds of wind-speed carry which eye-removing, divine, made of illusion chariot.)

तत्रापश्यन्महानीलं वैजयन्तं महाप्रभम्। ध्वजमिन्दीवरश्यामं वंशं कनकभूषणम् ॥३-४३-८॥
tatrāpaśyan mahānīlaṃ vaijayantaṃ mahāprabham। dhvajam indīvaraśyāmaṃ vaṃśaṃ kanakabhūṣaṇam ॥3-43-8॥

(In that chariot, standing charioteer adorned with refined gold, having seen, Pārtha, mighty-armed, the god indeed inferred.)
Seeing the charioteer standing in that chariot, adorned with refined gold, Pārtha, the mighty-armed, inferred that he was indeed a god. (3-43-9)
तथा तर्कयतस्तस्य फल्गुनस्याथ मातलिः। संनतः प्रश्रितो भूत्वा वाक्यमर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥३-४३-१०॥
tathā tarkayatastasya phalgunasya atha mātaliḥ। saṁnataḥ praśrito bhūtvā vākyam arjunam abravīt ॥3-43-10॥

(Thus, while reasoning, of him, of Phalguna, then, Mātali, bowed, respectful, having become, words, to Arjuna, said.)

भो भो शक्रात्मज श्रीमाञ्शक्रस्त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति। आरोहतु भवाञ्शीघ्रं रथमिन्द्रस्य संमतम् ॥३-४३-११॥

(O O son of Śakra, prosperous Śakra desires to see you. Let you quickly ascend the chariot of Indra, approved.)
O son of Śakra, Śakra, who is prosperous, wishes to see you. Please quickly ascend Indra's approved chariot. (3-43-11)
आह माममरश्रेष्ठः पिता तव शतक्रतुः। कुन्तीसुतमिह प्राप्तं पश्यन्तु त्रिदशालयाः ॥३-४३-१२॥
āha mām amaraśreṣṭhaḥ pitā tava śatakratuḥ। kuntīsutam iha prāptam paśyantu tridaśālayāḥ ॥3-43-12॥
[आह (āha) - said; माम् (mām) - to me; अमरश्रेष्ठः (amaraśreṣṭhaḥ) - best among immortals; पिता (pitā) - father; तव (tava) - your; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra; कुन्ती-सुतम् (kuntī-sutam) - Kunti's son; इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - arrived; पश्यन्तु (paśyantu) - let them see; त्रिदशालयाः (tridaśālayāḥ) - inhabitants of the abode of the gods;]
(Said to me, the best among immortals, your father Indra: Let the inhabitants of the abode of the gods see Kunti's son who has arrived here.)

एष शक्रः परिवृतो देवैरृषिगणैस्तथा। गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च त्वां दिदृक्षुः प्रतीक्षते ॥३-४३-१३॥
eṣa śakraḥ parivṛto devair ṛṣigaṇais tathā। gandharvair apsarobhiś ca tvāṃ didṛkṣuḥ pratīkṣate ॥3-43-13॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (one); शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; ऋषिगणैः (ṛṣigaṇaiḥ) - by groups of sages; तथा (tathā) - also; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - by the Apsarases; च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to see; प्रतीक्षते (pratīkṣate) - is waiting;]
(This Śakra, surrounded by the gods, by groups of sages also, by Gandharvas and Apsarases, is waiting, desiring to see you.)

अस्माल्लोकाद्देवलोकं पाकशासनशासनात्। आरोह त्वं मया सार्धं लब्धास्त्रः पुनरेष्यसि ॥३-४३-१४॥
asmāllokād devalokaṃ pākaśāsanaśāsanāt। āroha tvaṃ mayā sārdhaṃ labdhāstraḥ punareṣyasi ॥3-43-14॥
[अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; लोकात् (lokāt) - from world; देवलोकं (devalokaṃ) - divine world; पाकशासनशासनात् (pākaśāsanaśāsanāt) - from the rule of Indra (Pākaśāsana); आरोह (āroha) - ascend; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; लब्धास्त्रः (labdhāstraḥ) - having obtained weapons; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will come;]
(From this world, to the divine world, from the rule of Indra; ascend, you, with me, together, having obtained weapons, again you will come.)

मातले गच्छ शीघ्रं त्वमारोहस्व रथोत्तमम्। राजसूयाश्वमेधानां शतैरपि सुदुर्लभम् ॥३-४३-१५॥
mātale gaccha śīghraṃ tvārohāsva rathottamam। rājasūyāśvamedhānāṃ śatair api sudurlabham ॥3-43-15॥
[मातले (mātale) - O Mātali; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; शीघ्रं (śīghraṃ) - quickly; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आरोहस्व (ārohāsva) - ascend; रथोत्तमम् (rathottamam) - the best chariot; राजसूयाश्वमेधानाम् (rājasūyāśvamedhānām) - of Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices; शतैः (śataiḥ) - by hundreds; अपि (api) - even; सुदुर्लभम् (sudurlabham) - very difficult to obtain;]
(O Mātali, go quickly, you ascend the best chariot, which even by hundreds of Rājasūya and Aśvamedha sacrifices is very difficult to obtain.)

पार्थिवैः सुमहाभागैर्यज्वभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। दैवतैर्वा समारोढुं दानवैर्वा रथोत्तमम् ॥३-४३-१६॥
pārthivaiḥ sumahābhāgair yajvabhir bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। daivatair vā samāroḍhuṃ dānavair vā rathottamam ॥3-43-16॥
[पार्थिवैः (pārthivaiḥ) - by kings; सुमहाभागैः (sumahābhāgaiḥ) - by those of great fortune; यज्वभिः (yajvabhiḥ) - by sacrificers; भूरिदक्षिणैः (bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ) - by those who give many gifts; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by gods; वा (vā) - or; समारोढुम् (samāroḍhum) - to ascend together; दानवैः (dānavaiḥ) - by demons; वा (vā) - or; रथोत्तमम् (rathottamam) - the best chariot;]
(By kings, by those of great fortune, by sacrificers, by those who give many gifts, or by gods, or to ascend together, by demons, or the best chariot.)
The best chariot could not be ascended even by kings of great fortune, by sacrificers who give many gifts, by gods, or by demons. (3-43-16)
नातप्ततपसा शक्य एष दिव्यो महारथः। द्रष्टुं वाप्यथ वा स्प्रष्टुमारोढुं कुत एव तु ॥३-४३-१७॥
nātaptatapasā śakya eṣa divyo mahārathaḥ। draṣṭuṃ vāpyatha vā spraṣṭumāroḍhuṃ kuta eva tu ॥3-43-17॥
[न (na) - not; अतप्ततपसा (ataptatapasā) - by one whose austerity is not heated; शक्य (śakya) - possible; एष (eṣa) - this; दिव्यः (divyaḥ) - divine; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great chariot; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; स्प्रष्टुम् (spraṣṭum) - to touch; आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to mount; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but;]
(Not by one whose austerity is not heated is this divine great chariot possible to see or even or to touch or to mount; whence indeed but.)
This divine great chariot cannot be seen, touched, or mounted by anyone whose austerity is not intense; how much less by others. (3-43-17)
त्वयि प्रतिष्ठिते साधो रथस्थे स्थिरवाजिनि। पश्चादहमथारोक्ष्ये सुकृती सत्पथं यथा ॥३-४३-१८॥
tvayi pratiṣṭhite sādho rathasthe sthiravājini। paścād aham athārokṣye sukṛtī satpathaṃ yathā ॥3-43-18॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; प्रतिष्ठिते (pratiṣṭhite) - being established; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; रथस्थे (rathasthe) - situated in the chariot; स्थिरवाजिनि (sthiravājini) - on the steady-horsed (chariot); पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; अहम् (aham) - I; अथ (atha) - then; आरोक्ष्ये (ārokṣye) - will mount; सुकृती (sukṛtī) - the virtuous one; सत्पथं (satpathaṃ) - the right path; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(In you being established, O noble one, situated in the chariot, on the steady-horsed (chariot); afterwards I then will mount, the virtuous one, the right path as.)
O noble one, when you are firmly established on the steady-horsed chariot, then afterwards I, the virtuous one, will mount and proceed on the right path as is proper. (3-43-18)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मातलिः शक्रसारथिः। आरुरोह रथं शीघ्रं हयान्येमे च रश्मिभिः ॥३-४३-१९॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā mātaliḥ śakrasārathiḥ। āruroha rathaṃ śīghraṃ hayān yeme ca raśmibhiḥ ॥3-43-19॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनं (tadvacanam) - that speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; शक्रसारथिः (śakrasārathiḥ) - charioteer of Śakra; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; रथं (ratham) - chariot; शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; हयान् (hayān) - horses; येमे (yeme) - he yoked; च (ca) - and; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - with reins;]
(Of him that speech having heard, Mātali, charioteer of Śakra, ascended the chariot quickly, yoked the horses and (bound them) with reins.)
Hearing those words, Mātali, the charioteer of Śakra, quickly ascended the chariot, yoked the horses, and fastened them with reins. (3-43-19)
ततोऽर्जुनो हृष्टमना गङ्गायामाप्लुतः शुचिः। जजाप जप्यं कौन्तेयो विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥३-४३-२०॥
tato'ṛjuno hṛṣṭamanā gaṅgāyāmāplutaḥ śuciḥ। jajāpa japyaṃ kaunteyo vidhivatkurunandanaḥ ॥3-43-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; हृष्टमना (hṛṣṭamanā) - with delighted mind; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Ganga; आप्लुतः (āplutaḥ) - having bathed; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; जजाप (jajāpa) - recited; जप्यम् (japyaṃ) - mantra; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - delighter of the Kurus;]
(Then Arjuna, with delighted mind, having bathed in the Ganga, pure, recited the mantra, the son of Kunti, according to rule, delighter of the Kurus.)
Then Arjuna, his mind delighted, having bathed and purified himself in the Ganga, recited the mantra as prescribed, O son of Kunti, delight of the Kurus. (3-43-20)
ततः पितॄन्यथान्यायं तर्पयित्वा यथाविधि। मन्दरं शैलराजं तमाप्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥३-४३-२१॥
tataḥ pitṝn yathā-nyāyam tarpayitvā yathā-vidhi| mandaraṃ śailarājaṃ tam āpraṣṭum upacakrame ॥3-43-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; यथा (yathā) - according to; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - proper manner; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied; यथा (yathā) - according to; विधि (vidhi) - rule; मन्दरम् (mandaram) - Mandara; शैलराजम् (śailarājam) - king of mountains; तम् (tam) - him; आप्रष्टुम् (āpraṣṭum) - to take leave of; उपचक्रमे (upacakrame) - he began;]
(Then, having satisfied the ancestors according to proper manner and rule, he began to take leave of Mandara, the king of mountains.)
Then, having duly satisfied the ancestors as prescribed, he began to take leave of Mandara, the king of mountains. (3-43-21)
साधूनां धर्मशीलानां मुनीनां पुण्यकर्मणाम्। त्वं सदा संश्रयः शैल स्वर्गमार्गाभिकाङ्क्षिणाम् ॥३-४३-२२॥
sādhūnāṃ dharmaśīlānāṃ munīnāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām। tvaṃ sadā saṃśrayaḥ śaila svargamārgābhikāṅkṣiṇām ॥3-43-22॥
[साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; धर्मशीलानाम् (dharmaśīlānām) - of those whose nature is righteousness; मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - of sages; पुण्यकर्मणाम् (puṇyakarmaṇām) - of those whose actions are meritorious; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सदा (sadā) - always; संश्रयः (saṃśrayaḥ) - refuge; शैल (śaila) - O mountain; स्वर्गमार्ग (svargamārga) - path to heaven; अभिकाङ्क्षिणाम् (abhikāṅkṣiṇām) - of those who desire;]
(Of the virtuous, of those whose nature is righteousness, of sages, of those whose actions are meritorious, you always are the refuge, O mountain, for those who desire the path to heaven.)
O mountain, you are always the refuge for the virtuous, the righteous, the sages, and those who perform meritorious deeds, for all who desire the path to heaven. (3-43-22)
त्वत्प्रसादात्सदा शैल ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया विशः। स्वर्गं प्राप्ताश्चरन्ति स्म देवैः सह गतव्यथाः ॥३-४३-२३॥
tvatprasādātsadā śaila brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā viśaḥ। svargaṃ prāptāścaranti sma devaiḥ saha gatavyathāḥ ॥3-43-23॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - from you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; सदा (sadā) - always; शैल (śaila) - O mountain; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kṣatriyas; विशः (viśaḥ) - Vaiśyas; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; चरन्ति (caranti) - move about; स्म (sma) - indeed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together; गतव्यथाः (gatavyathāḥ) - free from suffering;]
(From your grace always, O mountain, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas attained heaven, indeed move about together with the gods, free from suffering.)
By your grace, O mountain, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas have always attained heaven and move about there with the gods, free from suffering. (3-43-23)
अद्रिराज महाशैल मुनिसंश्रय तीर्थवन्। गच्छाम्यामन्त्रयामि त्वां सुखमस्म्युषितस्त्वयि ॥३-४३-२४॥
adrirāja mahāśaila munisaṃśraya tīrthavan। gacchāmyāmantrayāmi tvāṃ sukhamasmyuṣitastvayi ॥3-43-24॥
[अद्रिराज (adrirāja) - mountain-king; महाशैल (mahāśaila) - great-rock; मुनिसंश्रय (munisaṃśraya) - sage-refuge; तीर्थवन् (tīrthavan) - having holy places; गच्छामि (gacchāmi) - I go; आमन्त्रयामि (āmantrayāmi) - I take leave; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सुखम् (sukham) - comfortably; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having dwelt; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you;]
(O mountain-king, great-rock, sage-refuge, having holy places, I go, I take leave of you, comfortably I am, having dwelt with you.)
O king of mountains, great rock, refuge of sages, and abode of holy places, I now depart, taking leave of you, having dwelt happily with you. (3-43-24)
तव सानूनि कुञ्जाश्च नद्यः प्रस्रवणानि च। तीर्थानि च सुपुण्यानि मया दृष्टान्यनेकशः ॥३-४३-२५॥
tava sānūni kuñjāś ca nadyaḥ prasravaṇāni ca. tīrthāni ca supuṇyāni mayā dṛṣṭāny anekaśaḥ ॥3-43-25॥
[तव (tava) - of you; सानूनि (sānūni) - mountain-tops; कुञ्जाः (kuñjāḥ) - thickets; च (ca) - and; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; प्रस्रवणानि (prasravaṇāni) - springs; च (ca) - and; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - fords; च (ca) - and; सुपुण्यानि (supuṇyāni) - very holy; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टानि (dṛṣṭāni) - seen; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - many times;]
(Of you, mountain-tops, thickets and rivers, springs and fords and very holy places, by me seen many times.)
I have seen your mountain-tops, thickets, rivers, springs, and very holy fords many times. (3-43-25)
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः शैलमामन्त्र्य परवीरहा। आरुरोह रथं दिव्यं द्योतयन्निव भास्करः ॥३-४३-२६॥
evam-uktvā arjunaḥ śailam āmantrya paravīrahā। āruroha rathaṃ divyaṃ dyotayann iva bhāskaraḥ ॥3-43-26॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; शैलम् (śailam) - mountain; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; द्योतयन् (dyotayan) - shining; इव (iva) - like; भास्करः (bhāskaraḥ) - the sun;]
(Thus having said, Arjuna, having addressed the mountain, destroyer of enemy heroes, ascended the divine chariot, shining like the sun.)
Having thus spoken, Arjuna, the destroyer of enemy heroes, addressed the mountain and ascended his divine chariot, shining like the sun. (3-43-26)
स तेनादित्यरूपेण दिव्येनाद्भुतकर्मणा। ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे धीमान्प्रहृष्टः कुरुनन्दनः ॥३-४३-२७॥
sa tenādityarūpeṇa divyenādbhutakarmaṇā। ūrdhvamācakrame dhīmān prahṛṣṭaḥ kurunandanaḥ ॥3-43-27॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by that; आदित्यरूपेण (ādityarūpeṇa) - with the form of the sun; दिव्येन (divyena) - by the divine; अद्भुतकर्मणा (adbhutakarmaṇā) - by the wondrous deed; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; आचक्रमे (ācakrame) - he stepped; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(He, by that sun-form, by the divine, by the wondrous deed, upwards stepped, the wise, delighted, O joy of the Kurus.)
He, assuming that sun-like, divine and wondrous form, joyfully and wisely stepped upwards, O delight of the Kurus. (3-43-27)
सोऽदर्शनपथं यात्वा मर्त्यानां भूमिचारिणाम्। ददर्शाद्भुतरूपाणि विमानानि सहस्रशः ॥३-४३-२८॥
so'adarśanapathaṃ yātvā martyānāṃ bhūmicāriṇām। dadarśādbhutarūpāṇi vimānāni sahasraśaḥ ॥3-43-28॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अदर्शनपथम् (adarśanapatham) - the path of invisibility; यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; मर्त्यानाम् (martyānām) - of mortals; भूमिचारिणाम् (bhūmicāriṇām) - of those who move on the earth; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; अद्भुतरूपाणि (adbhutarūpāṇi) - of wonderful forms; विमानानि (vimānāni) - aerial vehicles; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(He, having gone by the path of invisibility of mortals who move on the earth, saw aerial vehicles of wonderful forms by thousands.)
He traversed the invisible path of mortals who walk the earth and saw thousands of aerial vehicles of marvelous forms. (3-43-28)
न तत्र सूर्यः सोमो वा द्योतते न च पावकः। स्वयैव प्रभया तत्र द्योतन्ते पुण्यलब्धया ॥३-४३-२९॥
na tatra sūryaḥ somo vā dyotate na ca pāvakaḥ। svayaiva prabhayā tatra dyotante puṇyalabdhayā ॥3-43-29॥
[न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; सोमः (somaḥ) - moon; वा (vā) - or; द्योतते (dyotate) - shines; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; स्वयैव (svayaiva) - by its own (self) indeed; प्रभया (prabhayā) - by radiance; तत्र (tatra) - there; द्योतन्ते (dyotante) - shine; पुण्यलब्धया (puṇyalabdhayā) - by the attainment of merit;]
(Not there sun, moon or shines, not and fire. By its own radiance there shine by the attainment of merit.)
There, neither the sun nor the moon nor fire shines; by its own radiance, attained through merit, it shines there. (3-43-29)
तारारूपाणि यानीह दृश्यन्ते द्युतिमन्ति वै। दीपवद्विप्रकृष्टत्वादणूनि सुमहान्त्यपि ॥३-४३-३०॥
tārārūpāṇi yāni iha dṛśyante dyutimanti vai। dīpavat viprakṛṣṭatvāt aṇūni su-mahānti api ॥3-43-30॥
[तारारूपाणि (tārārūpāṇi) - star-forms; यानि (yāni) - which; इह (iha) - here; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; द्युतिमन्ति (dyutimanti) - luminous; वै (vai) - indeed; दीपवत् (dīpavat) - like a lamp; विप्रकृष्टत्वात् (viprakṛṣṭatvāt) - due to remoteness; अणूनि (aṇūni) - minute; सुमहान्ति (su-mahānti) - very great; अपि (api) - even;]
(The star-forms which here are seen, luminous indeed, like a lamp, due to remoteness, minute, very great even.)
The star-like forms that are seen here, though luminous like lamps, appear minute due to their remoteness, even though they are actually very large. (3-43-30)
तानि तत्र प्रभास्वन्ति रूपवन्ति च पाण्डवः। ददर्श स्वेषु धिष्ण्येषु दीप्तिमन्ति स्वयार्चिषा ॥३-४३-३१॥
tāni tatra prabhāsvanti rūpavanti ca pāṇḍavaḥ। dadarśa sveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣu dīptimanti svayārciṣā ॥3-43-31॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; (neuter plural nominative); तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रभास्वन्ति (prabhāsvanti) - shining; (having brilliance); रूपवन्ति (rūpavanti) - beautiful; (having form); च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; (Arjuna); ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; स्वेषु (sveṣu) - in his own; (plural locative); धिष्ण्येषु (dhiṣṇyeṣu) - seats; (thrones); दीप्तिमन्ति (dīptimanti) - radiant; (possessing splendor); स्वयार्चिषा (svayārciṣā) - with their own flame; (by their own radiance);]
(Those there shining beautiful and the son of Pāṇḍu saw in his own seats radiant with their own flame.)
There, the son of Pāṇḍu saw those shining and beautiful seats, radiant with their own brilliance, in his own places. (3-43-31)
तत्र राजर्षयः सिद्धा वीराश्च निहता युधि। तपसा च जितस्वर्गाः सम्पेतुः शतसङ्घशः ॥३-४३-३२॥
tatra rājarṣayaḥ siddhā vīrāś ca nihatā yudhi. tapasā ca jitasvargāḥ sampetuḥ śatasaṅghaśaḥ ॥3-43-32॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; च (ca) - and; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; जितस्वर्गाः (jitasvargāḥ) - those who have conquered heaven; सम्पेतुः (sampetuḥ) - have attained; शतसङ्घशः (śatasaṅghaśaḥ) - in hundreds of groups;]
(There royal sages, perfected beings, and heroes, and those slain in battle, and by austerity those who have conquered heaven, have attained (there) in hundreds of groups.)
There, royal sages, perfected beings, heroes, and those slain in battle, as well as those who have conquered heaven through austerity, have gathered there in hundreds of groups. (3-43-32)
गन्धर्वाणां सहस्राणि सूर्यज्वलनतेजसाम्। गुह्यकानामृषीणां च तथैवाप्सरसां गणाः ॥३-४३-३३॥
gandharvāṇāṃ sahasrāṇi sūryajvalanatejasām। guhyakānām ṛṣīṇāṃ ca tathaivāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ ॥3-43-33॥
[गन्धर्वाणां (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; सूर्यज्वलनतेजसाम् (sūryajvalanatejasām) - of those whose brilliance is like the sun and fire; गुह्यकानाम् (guhyakānām) - of the Guhyakas; ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; अप्सरसां (apsarasām) - of the Apsarases; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups;]
(Of the Gandharvas thousands of those whose brilliance is like the sun and fire; of the Guhyakas, of the sages and likewise of the Apsarases groups.)
There were thousands of Gandharvas whose brilliance was like that of the sun and fire; similarly, there were groups of Guhyakas, sages, and Apsarases. (3-43-33)
लोकानात्मप्रभान्पश्यन्फल्गुनो विस्मयान्वितः। पप्रच्छ मातलिं प्रीत्या स चाप्येनमुवाच ह ॥३-४३-३४॥
lokān ātma-prabhān paśyan phalguno vismayānvitaḥ। papraccha mātaliṃ prītyā sa cāpy enam uvāca ha ॥3-43-34॥
[लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आत्मप्रभान् (ātma-prabhān) - self-luminous; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; फलगुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); विस्मयान्वितः (vismayānvitaḥ) - filled with wonder; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; मातलिम् (mātalim) - Mātali; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एनम् (enam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Seeing the self-luminous worlds, Phalguna, filled with wonder, asked Mātali with affection; he also indeed spoke to him.)
Beholding the self-luminous worlds, Arjuna, filled with wonder, affectionately asked Mātali; and he too replied to him. (3-43-34)
एते सुकृतिनः पार्थ स्वेषु धिष्ण्येष्ववस्थिताः। यान्दृष्टवानसि विभो तारारूपाणि भूतले ॥३-४३-३५॥
ete sukṛtinaḥ pārtha sveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣv avasthitāḥ। yān dṛṣṭavān asi vibho tārārūpāṇi bhūtale ॥3-43-35॥
[एते (ete) - these; सुकृतिनः (sukṛtinaḥ) - virtuous ones; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; स्वेषु (sveṣu) - in their own; धिष्ण्येषु (dhiṣṇyeṣu) - seats; अवस्थिताः (avasthitāḥ) - situated; यान् (yān) - which; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - you have seen; असि (asi) - are; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; तारारूपाणि (tārārūpāṇi) - star-forms; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the earth;]
(These virtuous ones, O son of Pṛthā, are situated in their own seats; which star-forms you have seen, O mighty one, on the earth.)
O Pārtha, these virtuous ones are established in their own seats; the star-like forms you have seen on the earth, O mighty one, are them. (3-43-35)
ततोऽपश्यत्स्थितं द्वारि सितं वैजयिनं गजम्। ऐरावतं चतुर्दन्तं कैलासमिव शृङ्गिणम् ॥३-४३-३६॥
tato'paśyat sthitaṃ dvāri sitaṃ vaijayinaṃ gajam। airāvataṃ caturdantaṃ kailāsam iva śṛṅgiṇam ॥3-43-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the gate; सितम् (sitam) - white; वैजयिनम् (vaijayinam) - victorious; गजम् (gajam) - elephant; ऐरावतम् (airāvatam) - Airavata; चतुर्दन्तम् (caturdantam) - four-tusked; कैलासम् (kailāsam) - Kailāsa; इव (iva) - like; शृङ्गिणम् (śṛṅgiṇam) - having a peak;]
(Then he saw standing at the gate a white, victorious elephant, Airavata, four-tusked, like Kailāsa having a peak.)
Then he saw, standing at the gate, the white, victorious elephant Airavata, four-tusked and resembling Mount Kailāsa with its peak. (3-43-36)
स सिद्धमार्गमाक्रम्य कुरुपाण्डवसत्तमः। व्यरोचत यथा पूर्वं मान्धाता पार्थिवोत्तमः ॥३-४३-३७॥
sa siddhamārgamākramya kurupāṇḍavasattamaḥ। vyarocata yathā pūrvaṃ māndhātā pārthivottamaḥ ॥3-43-37॥
[स (sa) - he; सिद्धमार्गम् (siddhamārgam) - the perfected path; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having ascended; कुरुपाण्डवसत्तमः (kurupāṇḍavasattamaḥ) - the best among the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas; व्यरोचत (vyarocata) - shone; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; मान्धाता (māndhātā) - Māndhātā; पार्थिवोत्तमः (pārthivottamaḥ) - the best of kings;]
(He, having ascended the perfected path, the best among the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas, shone as formerly Māndhātā, the best of kings.)
Having ascended the perfected path, the best among the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas shone just as Māndhātā, the foremost of kings, did in former times. (3-43-37)
अतिचक्राम लोकान्स राज्ञां राजीवलोचनः। ततो ददर्श शक्रस्य पुरीं ताममरावतीम् ॥३-४३-३८॥
aticakrāma lokāns rājñāṃ rājīvalocanaḥ। tato dadarśa śakrasya purīṃ tām amarāvatīm ॥3-43-38॥
[अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - he crossed over; (ati-: beyond; cakrāma: he went;) लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; (plural accusative of loka;) स (sa) - he; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; (genitive plural of rājā;) राजीवलोचनः (rājīvalocanaḥ) - lotus-eyed; (rājīva: lotus; locana: eye;) ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; (genitive singular of Śakra, Indra;) पुरीम् (purīm) - city; (accusative singular of purī;) ताम् (tām) - that; (accusative singular feminine;) अमरावतीम् (amarāvatīm) - Amarāvatī; (name of Indra's city;);]
(He crossed over the worlds of kings, the lotus-eyed one. Then he saw the city of Śakra, that Amarāvatī.)
The lotus-eyed one crossed beyond the worlds of kings. Then he saw Śakra's city, Amarāvatī. (3-43-38)
