Pancharatra: Varuna, Yama, Kubera and Indra appear in front of Arjuna and bestow their weapons.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तस्य सम्पश्यतस्त्वेव पिनाकी वृषभध्वजः। जगामादर्शनं भानुर्लोकस्येवास्तमेयिवान् ॥३-४२-१॥
tasya sampaśyatastveva pinākī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ। jagāmādarśanaṃ bhānurlokasyevāstameyivān ॥3-42-1॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; सम्पश्यतः (sampaśyataḥ) - while looking; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; पिनाकी (pinākī) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva); वृषभध्वजः (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner is the bull; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अदर्शनम् (adarśanam) - to invisibility; भानुः (bhānuḥ) - the sun; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; इव (iva) - like; अस्तमेयिवान् (astameyivān) - setting (gone to setting);]
(Of him, while looking, but indeed, the wielder of Pināka, the one whose banner is the bull, went to invisibility, the sun of the world like setting.)
While he was looking on, Pināki, the Bull-bannered One, vanished from sight, just as the sun of the world disappears at sunset. (3-42-1)
ततोऽर्जुनः परं चक्रे विस्मयं परवीरहा। मया साक्षान्महादेवो दृष्ट इत्येव भारत ॥३-४२-२॥
tato'rujunaḥ paraṃ cakre vismayaṃ paravīrahā। mayā sākṣānmahādevo dṛṣṭa ityeva bhārata ॥3-42-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; परम् (param) - supreme; चक्रे (cakre) - made; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; मया (mayā) - by me; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Then Arjuna, the destroyer of enemy heroes, made supreme wonder. By me, Mahadeva was directly seen, thus indeed, O Bharata.)
Then Arjuna, the destroyer of enemy heroes, was filled with supreme wonder, saying, "I have directly seen Mahadeva myself," O Bharata. (3-42-2)
धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि यन्मया त्र्यम्बको हरः। पिनाकी वरदो रूपी दृष्टः स्पृष्टश्च पाणिना ॥३-४२-३॥
dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi yanmayā tryambako haraḥ। pinākī varado rūpī dṛṣṭaḥ spṛṣṭaśca pāṇinā ॥3-42-3॥
[धन्यः (dhanyaḥ) - fortunate; blessed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अनुगृहीतः (anugṛhītaḥ) - favoured; shown grace; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यत् (yat) - that; because; मया (mayā) - by me; त्र्यम्बकः (tryambakaḥ) - the three-eyed one; Śiva; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara; Śiva; पिनाकी (pinākī) - the wielder of Pināka (bow); वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; रूपी (rūpī) - having form; manifest; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; स्पृष्टः (spṛṣṭaḥ) - touched; च (ca) - and; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - by (his) hand;]
(Fortunate I am, favoured I am, because by me the three-eyed Hara, the wielder of Pināka, the bestower of boons, manifest, was seen and touched by (his) hand.)
I am blessed and favoured, for I have seen and touched with my own hand the three-eyed Hara, the wielder of Pināka, the bestower of boons, in manifest form. (3-42-3)
कृतार्थं चावगच्छामि परमात्मानमात्मना। शत्रूंश्च विजितान्सर्वान्निर्वृत्तं च प्रयोजनम् ॥३-४२-४॥
kṛtārthaṃ cāvagacchāmi paramātmānam ātmanā। śatrūṃś ca vijitān sarvān nirvṛttaṃ ca prayojanam ॥3-42-4॥
[कृतार्थं (kṛtārtham) - accomplished purpose; च (ca) - and; अवगच्छामि (avagacchāmi) - I understand; परमात्मानम् (paramātmānam) - the supreme self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by (my) self; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; च (ca) - and; विजितान् (vijitān) - conquered; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; निर्वृत्तं (nirvṛttam) - completed; च (ca) - and; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose;]
(Accomplished purpose and I understand the supreme self by (my) self. Enemies and conquered all, completed and purpose.)
I understand that my purpose has been accomplished, I have realized the supreme self by myself. All enemies have been conquered, and the objective has been fulfilled. (3-42-4)
ततो वैडूर्यवर्णाभो भासयन्सर्वतो दिशः। यादोगणवृतः श्रीमानाजगाम जलेश्वरः ॥३-४२-५॥
tato vaiḍūryavarṇābho bhāsayansarvato diśaḥ। yādogaṇavṛtaḥ śrīmānājagāma jaleśvaraḥ ॥3-42-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वैडूर्यवर्णाभः (vaiḍūryavarṇābhaḥ) - having the appearance of the color of beryl; भासयन् (bhāsayan) - shining; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; यादोगणवृतः (yādogaṇavṛtaḥ) - surrounded by groups of aquatic beings; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - splendid; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; जलेश्वरः (jaleśvaraḥ) - the lord of waters;]
(Then, having the appearance of the color of beryl, shining on all sides the directions, surrounded by groups of aquatic beings, splendid, came the lord of waters.)
Then the lord of waters, splendid and shining with the color of beryl, illuminating all directions and surrounded by groups of aquatic beings, arrived. (3-42-5)
नागैर्नदैर्नदीभिश्च दैत्यैः साध्यैश्च दैवतैः। वरुणो यादसां भर्ता वशी तं देशमागमत् ॥३-४२-६॥
nāgair nadair nadībhiś ca daityaiḥ sādhyaiś ca daivataiḥ। varuṇo yādasāṃ bhartā vaśī taṃ deśam āgamat ॥3-42-6॥
[नागैः (nāgaiḥ) - by serpents; नदैः (nadaiḥ) - by rivers; नदीभिः (nadībhiḥ) - by river-goddesses; च (ca) - and; दैत्यैः (daityaiḥ) - by Daityas; साध्यैः (sādhyaiḥ) - by Sādhyas; च (ca) - and; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by gods; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; यादसाम् (yādasām) - of aquatic beings; भर्ता (bhartā) - the lord; वशी (vaśī) - the controller; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; आगमत् (āgamat) - came;]
(By serpents, by rivers, by river-goddesses, and by Daityas, by Sādhyas and by gods, Varuṇa, the lord of aquatic beings, the controller, came to that place.)
Attended by serpents, rivers, river-goddesses, Daityas, Sādhyas, and gods, Varuṇa, the lord and controller of aquatic beings, came to that place. (3-42-6)
अथ जाम्बूनदवपुर्विमानेन महार्चिषा। कुबेरः समनुप्राप्तो यक्षैरनुगतः प्रभुः ॥३-४२-७॥
atha jāmbūnadavapurvimānena mahārciṣā। kuberaḥ samanuprāpto yakṣairanugataḥ prabhuḥ ॥3-42-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; जाम्बूनद-वपुः-विमानेन (jāmbūnada-vapuḥ-vimānena) - with an aerial car having a body of Jāmbūnada gold; महा-अर्चिषा (mahā-arciṣā) - with great radiance; कुबेरः (kuberaḥ) - Kubera; समनुप्राप्तः (samanuprāptaḥ) - having arrived; यक्षैः (yakṣaiḥ) - with Yakṣas; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - accompanied; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Then, with an aerial car having a body of Jāmbūnada gold, with great radiance, Kubera, having arrived, accompanied by Yakṣas, the lord.)
Then Kubera, the lord, arrived in his radiant aerial car made of Jāmbūnada gold, accompanied by the Yakṣas. (3-42-7)
विद्योतयन्निवाकाशमद्भुतोपमदर्शनः। धनानामीश्वरः श्रीमानर्जुनं द्रष्टुमागतः ॥३-४२-८॥
vidyotayann ivākāśam adbhutopama-darśanaḥ। dhanānām īśvaraḥ śrīmān arjunaṃ draṣṭum āgataḥ ॥3-42-8॥
[विद्योतयन् (vidyotayan) - shining; illuminating; इव (iva) - as if; like; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; अद्भुतोपम (adbhutopama) - wonderful-like; marvelous; दर्शनः (darśanaḥ) - appearance; sight; धनानाम् (dhanānām) - of the wealthy; of riches; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; master; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; illustrious; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; arrived;]
(Shining as if the sky, of wonderful-like appearance, the lord of the wealthy, illustrious, has come to see Arjuna.)
The illustrious lord of wealth, whose appearance was marvelous and who shone like the sky, came to see Arjuna. (3-42-8)
तथा लोकान्तकृच्छ्रीमान्यमः साक्षात्प्रतापवान्। मूर्त्यमूर्तिधरैः सार्धं पितृभिर्लोकभावनैः ॥३-४२-९॥
tathā lokāntakṛcchrīmānyamaḥ sākṣātpratāpavān। mūrtyamūrtidharaiḥ sārdhaṃ pitṛbhirlokabhāvanaiḥ ॥3-42-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; लोकान्तकृत् (lokāntakṛt) - destroyer of worlds; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessor of fortune; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - possessing splendor; मूर्त्य् (mūrty) - with form; अमूर्तिधरैः (amūrtidharaiḥ) - with those who possess formlessness; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together with; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - with the ancestors; लोकभावनैः (lokabhāvanaiḥ) - with the creators of the worlds;]
(Thus, the destroyer of worlds, the illustrious Yama, directly possessing splendor, together with those possessing form and formlessness, with the ancestors, with the creators of the worlds.)
Thus, the illustrious Yama, destroyer of worlds and radiant in splendor, appeared directly, accompanied by the ancestors—both those with form and those formless—who are the creators of the worlds. (3-42-9)
दण्डपाणिरचिन्त्यात्मा सर्वभूतविनाशकृत्। वैवस्वतो धर्मराजो विमानेनावभासयन् ॥३-४२-१०॥
daṇḍapāṇir acintyātmā sarvabhūtavināśakṛt। vaivasvato dharmarājo vimānenāvabhāsayan ॥3-42-10॥
[दण्डपाणि (daṇḍapāṇi) - staff-handed; (one who holds a staff); अचिन्त्यात्मा (acintyātmā) - inconceivable-self; (whose nature is inconceivable); सर्वभूतविनाशकृत् (sarvabhūtavināśakṛt) - all-beings-destruction-doer; (one who causes the destruction of all beings); वैवस्वत (vaivasvata) - descendant of Vivasvat; (son of Vivasvat); धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - king of dharma; (lord of righteousness); विमानेन (vimānena) - by chariot; (by aerial car); आवभासयन् (āvabhāsayan) - shining forth; (illuminating);]
(Staff-handed, inconceivable-self, all-beings-destruction-doer; descendant of Vivasvat, king of dharma, by chariot, shining forth.)
The staff-bearing, inconceivable-natured destroyer of all beings, Vaivasvata, the king of dharma, shone forth in his chariot. (3-42-10)
त्रीँल्लोकान्गुह्यकांश्चैव गन्धर्वांश्च सपन्नगान्। द्वितीय इव मार्तण्डो युगान्ते समुपस्थिते ॥३-४२-११॥
trīṁllokānguhyakāṁścaiva gandharvāṁśca sapannagān। dvitīya iva mārtaṇḍo yugānte samupasthite ॥3-42-11॥
[त्रीँन् (trīn) - three; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गुह्यकान् (guhyakān) - guhyakas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - gandharvas; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - with; पन्नगान् (pannagān) - serpents; द्वितीय (dvitīya) - second; इव (iva) - like; मार्तण्डः (mārtaṇḍaḥ) - the Sun; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of the age; समुपस्थिते (samupasthite) - when arrived;]
(Three worlds, guhyakas and indeed gandharvas and with serpents; like a second Sun at the end of the age when arrived.)
He, having reached, appeared like a second Sun at the end of the age, along with the three worlds, guhyakas, gandharvas, and serpents. (3-42-11)
भानुमन्ति विचित्राणि शिखराणि महागिरेः। समास्थायार्जुनं तत्र ददृशुस्तपसान्वितम् ॥३-४२-१२॥
bhānumanti vicitrāṇi śikharāṇi mahāgireḥ। samāsthāyārjunaṃ tatra dadṛśustapasānvitam ॥3-42-12॥
[भानुमन्ति (bhānumanti) - possessed of light; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - variegated; शिखराणि (śikharāṇi) - peaks; महागिरेः (mahāgireḥ) - of the great mountain; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having ascended; अर्जुनं (arjunam) - Arjuna; तत्र (tatra) - there; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तपसा (tapasā) - with austerity; अन्वितम् (anvitam) - endowed;]
(Possessed of light, variegated peaks of the great mountain, having ascended, Arjuna there they saw endowed with austerity.)
Having ascended the variegated, radiant peaks of the great mountain, they saw Arjuna there, endowed with austerity. (3-42-12)
ततो मुहूर्ताद्भगवानैरावतशिरोगतः। आजगाम सहेन्द्राण्या शक्रः सुरगणैर्वृतः ॥३-४२-१३॥
tato muhūrtādbhagavān airāvataśirogataḥ। ājagāma sahendrāṇyā śakraḥ suragaṇairvṛtaḥ ॥3-42-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - from the moment; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; ऐरावत-शिरः-गतः (airāvata-śiraḥ-gataḥ) - gone to the head of Airāvata; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; स-इन्द्राण्या (sa-indrāṇyā) - with Indrāṇī; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; सुर-गणैः-वृतः (sura-gaṇaiḥ-vṛtaḥ) - surrounded by groups of gods;]
(From then, from the moment, the illustrious one, gone to the head of Airāvata, arrived, with Indrāṇī, Śakra, surrounded by groups of gods.)
Then, at that moment, the illustrious Śakra, having mounted the head of Airāvata, arrived together with Indrāṇī, surrounded by groups of gods. (3-42-13)
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि। शुशुभे तारकाराजः सितमभ्रमिवास्थितः ॥३-४२-१४॥
pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani। śuśubhe tārakārājaḥ sitamabhramivāsthitaḥ ॥3-42-14॥
[पाण्डुरेण (pāṇḍureṇa) - by the white; आतपत्रेण (ātapatreṇa) - by the parasol; ध्रियमाणेन (dhriyamāṇena) - being held; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; तारका-राजः (tārakā-rājaḥ) - the king of stars; सितम् (sitam) - white; अभ्रम् (abhram) - cloud; इव (iva) - like; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - standing;]
(By the white parasol being held on the head, the king of stars shone like a white cloud standing.)
With the white parasol held above his head, the king of stars shone like a white cloud in the sky. (3-42-14)
संस्तूयमानो गन्धर्वैरृषिभिश्च तपोधनैः। शृङ्गं गिरेः समासाद्य तस्थौ सूर्य इवोदितः ॥३-४२-१५॥
saṁstūyamāno gandharvair ṛṣibhiś ca tapodhanaiḥ। śṛṅgaṁ gireḥ samāsādya tasthau sūrya iva uditaḥ ॥3-42-15॥
[संस्तूयमानः (saṁstūyamānaḥ) - being praised; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनैः (tapodhanaiḥ) - by ascetics; शृङ्गम् (śṛṅgam) - peak; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having reached; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the Sun; इव (iva) - like; उदितः (uditaḥ) - risen;]
(Being praised by Gandharvas, by sages and by ascetics, having reached the peak of the mountain, stood like the risen Sun.)
Having been praised by Gandharvas, sages, and ascetics, he reached the mountain peak and stood there like the rising Sun. (3-42-15)
अथ मेघस्वनो धीमान्व्याजहार शुभां गिरम्। यमः परमधर्मज्ञो दक्षिणां दिशमास्थितः ॥३-४२-१६॥
atha meghasvano dhīmān vyājahāra śubhāṃ giram। yamaḥ paramadharmajño dakṣiṇāṃ diśam āsthitaḥ ॥3-42-16॥
[अथ (atha) - then; मेघस्वनः (meghasvanaḥ) - having the sound of thunder; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - spoke; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; गिरम् (giram) - speech; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; परमधर्मज्ञः (paramadharmajñaḥ) - knower of supreme dharma; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - standing;]
(Then, the wise one with the sound of thunder spoke auspicious speech; Yama, the knower of supreme dharma, standing in the southern direction.)
Then, Yama, the wise one whose voice was like thunder and who knows the highest dharma, standing in the southern direction, spoke auspicious words. (3-42-16)
अर्जुनार्जुन पश्यास्माँल्लोकपालान्समागतान्। दृष्टिं ते वितरामोऽद्य भवानर्हो हि दर्शनम् ॥३-४२-१७॥
arjunārjuna paśyāsmāṃllokapālānsamāgatān। dṛṣṭiṃ te vitarāmo'dya bhavānarho hi darśanam ॥3-42-17॥

(Arjuna Arjuna see us guardians of the worlds assembled; sight to you we bestow today; you worthy indeed vision.)
Arjuna, Arjuna, behold us, the assembled guardians of the worlds; today we grant you the vision, for you are indeed worthy of this sight. (3-42-17)
पूर्वर्षिरमितात्मा त्वं नरो नाम महाबलः। नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणस्तात मर्त्यतां समुपागतः ॥ त्वं वासवसमुद्भूतो महावीर्यपराक्रमः ॥३-४२-१८॥
pūrvarṣiramitātmā tvaṃ naro nāma mahābalaḥ। niyogādbrahmaṇastāta martyatāṃ samupāgataḥ ॥ tvaṃ vāsavasamudbhūto mahāvīryaparākramaḥ ॥3-42-18॥
[पूर्व (pūrva) - former; earlier; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sage; अर् (ar) - not; (negation); मित (mita) - measured; limited; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; soul; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नर (nara) - man; नाम (nāma) - named; by name; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by command; by order; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; तात (tāta) - dear one; son; मर्त्यताम् (martyatām) - mortality; state of being mortal; समुपागतः (samupāgataḥ) - has come; has attained; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वासव (vāsava) - of Indra; समुद्भूतः (samudbhūtaḥ) - born from; arisen from; महावीर्य (mahāvīrya) - of great energy; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valour; prowess;]
(Former sage of unmeasured self, you, man named of great strength, by command of Brahmā, dear one, have come to mortality. You, arisen from Indra, of great energy and valour. (3-42-18))
You were formerly a sage of immeasurable self, now you are a man named Nara of great strength. By the command of Brahmā, dear one, you have come to a mortal state. You are born from Indra, endowed with great energy and valour. (3-42-18)
क्षत्रं चाग्निसमस्पर्शं भारद्वाजेन रक्षितम्। दानवाश्च महावीर्या ये मनुष्यत्वमागताः ॥ निवातकवचाश्चैव संसाध्याः कुरुनन्दन ॥३-४२-१९॥
kṣatraṃ cāgnisamasparśaṃ bhāradvājena rakṣitam। dānavāś ca mahāvīryā ye manuṣyatvam āgatāḥ ॥ nivātakavacāś caiva saṃsādhyāḥ kurunandana ॥3-42-19॥
[क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - warrior-class; च (ca) - and; अग्निसमस्पर्शम् (agnisamasparśam) - equal-to-fire-in-touch; भारद्वाजेन (bhāradvājena) - by Bhāradvāja; रक्षितम् (rakṣitam) - protected; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; च (ca) - and; महावीर्याः (mahāvīryāḥ) - of great strength; ये (ye) - who; मनुष्यत्वम् (manuṣyatvam) - human-state; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - have attained; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - Nivātakavacas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; संसाध्याः (saṃsādhyāḥ) - to be subdued; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus;]
(The warrior-class, and equal-to-fire-in-touch, protected by Bhāradvāja. And the Dānavas of great strength, who have attained human-state. The Nivātakavacas indeed are to be subdued, O joy of the Kurus. (3-42-19))
The warrior-class, whose touch is like fire, has been protected by Bhāradvāja. The Dānavas of great strength who have taken human form, and the Nivātakavacas, must indeed be subdued, O joy of the Kurus. (3-42-19)
पितुर्ममांशो देवस्य सर्वलोकप्रतापिनः। कर्णः स सुमहावीर्यस्त्वया वध्यो धनञ्जय ॥३-४२-२०॥
pitur mamāṃśo devasya sarvalokapratāpinaḥ। karṇaḥ sa sumahāvīryas tvayā vadhyo dhanañjaya ॥3-42-20॥

(Of the father my portion of the god of the one who shines upon all worlds, Karṇa, he of great might, by you to be slain, O Dhanañjaya.)
O Dhanañjaya, Karṇa, who is a portion of my father, the god who shines upon all worlds, and who is of great might, is to be slain by you. (3-42-20)
अंशाश्च क्षितिसम्प्राप्ता देवगन्धर्वरक्षसाम्। तया निपातिता युद्धे स्वकर्मफलनिर्जिताम् ॥ गतिं प्राप्स्यन्ति कौन्तेय यथास्वमरिकर्शन ॥३-४२-२१॥
aṁśāś ca kṣitisamprāptā devagandharvarakṣasām। tayā nipātitā yuddhe svakarmaphalanirjitām ॥ gatiṁ prāpsyanti kaunteya yathāsvamarikarśana ॥3-42-21॥
[अंशाः (aṁśāḥ) - parts; shares; च (ca) - and; क्षितिसम्प्राप्ताः (kṣitisamprāptāḥ) - having reached the earth; देवगन्धर्वरक्षसाम् (devagandharvarakṣasām) - of gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas; तया (tayā) - by her; निपातिताः (nipātitāḥ) - cast down; struck down; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; स्वकर्मफलनिर्जिताम् (svakarmaphalanirjitām) - conquered by the fruit of their own actions; गतिम् (gatim) - state; destination; प्राप्स्यन्ति (prāpsyanti) - will attain; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यथास्वम् (yathāsvam) - according to their own; अरि-कर्त्शन (ari-karśana) - O tormentor of enemies;]
(And the shares having reached the earth of gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas, by her were cast down in battle, conquered by the fruit of their own actions. The state they will attain, O son of Kunti, according to their own, O tormentor of enemies. (3-42-21))
The portions of gods, gandharvas, and rākṣasas who have descended to earth were struck down in battle by her, overcome by the results of their own actions. O son of Kunti, O tormentor of enemies, they will each attain the state that is their due. (3-42-21)
अक्षया तव कीर्तिश्च लोके स्थास्यति फल्गुन। त्वया साक्षान्महादेवस्तोषितो हि महामृधे ॥ लघ्वी वसुमती चापि कर्तव्या विष्णुना सह ॥३-४२-२२॥
akṣayā tava kīrtiś ca loke sthāsyati phalguna। tvayā sākṣān mahādevas toṣito hi mahāmṛdhe ॥ laghvī vasumatī cāpi kartavyā viṣṇunā saha ॥3-42-22॥
[अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable; तव (tava) - your; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; च (ca) - and; लोके (loke) - in the world; स्थास्यति (sthāsyati) - will remain; फल्गुन (phalguna) - O Phalguna; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; तोषितः (toṣitaḥ) - is pleased; हि (hi) - indeed; महामृधे (mahāmṛdhe) - in the great battle; लघ्वी (laghvī) - light; वसुमती (vasumatī) - the earth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कर्तव्या (kartavyā) - to be made; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Vishnu; सह (saha) - together with;]
(Imperishable your fame and in the world will remain, O Phalguna. By you directly Mahadeva is pleased indeed in the great battle. Light the earth also to be made by Vishnu together with.)
O Phalguna, your fame will remain imperishable in the world. In the great battle, Mahadeva himself has indeed been pleased by you. The earth will also become light together with Vishnu. (3-42-22)
गृहाणास्त्रं महाबाहो दण्डमप्रतिवारणम्। अनेनास्त्रेण सुमहत्त्वं हि कर्म करिष्यसि ॥३-४२-२३॥
gṛhāṇāstraṃ mahābāho daṇḍamaprativāraṇam। anenāstreṇa sumahattvaṃ hi karma kariṣyasi ॥3-42-23॥
[गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; receive; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; weapon; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; दण्डम् (daṇḍam) - rod; staff; punishment; अप्रतिवारणम् (aprativāraṇam) - irresistible; not to be opposed; अनेन (anena) - by this; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by the weapon; सुमहत्त्वं (sumahattvaṃ) - greatness; very great; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; you will perform;]
(Take the weapon, O mighty-armed, the rod which is irresistible. By this weapon, indeed, you will perform very great action. (3-42-23))
O mighty-armed one, take this weapon—the rod that cannot be resisted. With this weapon, you will indeed accomplish very great deeds. (3-42-23)
प्रतिजग्राह तत्पार्थो विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः। समन्त्रं सोपचारं च समोक्षं सनिवर्तनम् ॥३-४२-२४॥
pratijagrāha tatpārtho vidhivat kurunandanaḥ। samantraṃ sopacāraṃ ca samokṣaṃ sanivartanam ॥3-42-24॥

(Arjuna, the son of Pṛthā, the delight of the Kurus, accepted that properly, with mantra, with proper offerings and with release and with return.)

ततो जलधरश्यामो वरुणो यादसां पतिः। पश्चिमां दिशमास्थाय गिरमुच्चारयन्प्रभुः ॥३-४२-२५॥
tato jaladharaśyāmo varuṇo yādasāṃ patiḥ। paścimāṃ diśam āsthāya giram uccārayan prabhuḥ ॥3-42-25॥

(Then, cloud-dark Varuṇa, lord of the aquatic beings, having assumed the western direction, uttering speech, the lord.)
Then Varuṇa, dark as a raincloud and lord of the aquatic beings, took his place in the western direction and, uttering words, the lord spoke. (3-42-25)
पार्थ क्षत्रियमुख्यस्त्वं क्षत्रधर्मे व्यवस्थितः। पश्य मां पृथुताम्राक्ष वरुणोऽस्मि जलेश्वरः ॥३-४२-२६॥
pārtha kṣatriyamukhyas tvaṃ kṣatradharme vyavasthitaḥ। paśya māṃ pṛthutāmrākṣa varuṇo'smi jaleśvaraḥ ॥3-42-26॥
[पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; क्षत्रियमुख्य (kṣatriyamukhya) - chief among warriors; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; क्षत्रधर्मे (kṣatradharme) - in the duty of a warrior; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - situated; पश्य (paśya) - see; माम् (mām) - me; पृथुताम्राक्ष (pṛthutāmrākṣa) - wide reddish-eyed; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; जलेश्वरः (jaleśvaraḥ) - lord of waters;]
(O son of Pṛthā, chief among warriors, you are situated in the duty of a warrior. See me, wide reddish-eyed, I am Varuṇa, lord of waters.)
O Pārtha, you are the foremost among warriors, established in the warrior's duty. Behold me with wide reddish eyes—I am Varuṇa, the lord of the waters. (3-42-26)
मया समुद्यतान्पाशान्वारुणाननिवारणान्। प्रतिगृह्णीष्व कौन्तेय सरहस्यनिवर्तनान् ॥३-४२-२७॥
mayā samudyatān pāśān vāruṇān anivāraṇān। pratigṛhṇīṣva kaunteya sarahasya-nivartanān ॥3-42-27॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; समुद्यतान् (samudyatān) - raised up; पाशान् (pāśān) - nooses; वारुणान् (vāruṇān) - of Varuṇa; अनिवारणान् (anivāraṇān) - irresistible; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सरहस्यनिवर्तनान् (sarahasya-nivartanān) - those that turn back the secret;]
(By me raised up nooses of Varuṇa irresistible accept O son of Kunti those that turn back the secret.)
O son of Kunti, accept from me these irresistible nooses of Varuṇa, which can turn back even secret things. (3-42-27)
एभिस्तदा मया वीर सङ्ग्रामे तारकामये। दैतेयानां सहस्राणि संयतानि महात्मनाम् ॥३-४२-२८॥
ebhis tadā mayā vīra saṅgrāme tārakāmaye। daiteyānāṃ sahasrāṇi saṃyatāni mahātmanām ॥3-42-28॥
[एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; तदा (tadā) - then; मया (mayā) - by me; वीर (vīra) - O hero; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; तारकामये (tārakāmaye) - in the Taraka war; दैतेयानाम् (daiteyānām) - of the Daiteyas; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; संयतानि (saṃyatāni) - restrained; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled;]
(By these then by me, O hero, in the battle of Taraka, thousands of Daiteyas, restrained, of the great-souled.)
O hero, then by me in the battle of Taraka, thousands of great-souled Daiteyas were restrained. (3-42-28)
तस्मादिमान्महासत्त्व मत्प्रसादात्समुत्थितान्। गृहाण न हि ते मुच्येदन्तकोऽप्याततायिनः ॥३-४२-२९॥
tasmādimān mahāsattva matprasādāt samutthitān। gṛhāṇa na hi te mucyed antako'pyātatāyinaḥ ॥3-42-29॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इमान् (imān) - these; महासत्त्व (mahāsattva) - great being; मत्-प्रसादात् (mat-prasādāt) - by my favor; समुत्थितान् (samutthitān) - risen; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; मुच्येत् (mucyet) - should be released; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - death; अपि (api) - even; आततायिनः (ātatāyinaḥ) - aggressors;]
(Therefore, these, great being, by my favor, risen, take; not, indeed, they, should be released, death, even, aggressors.)
Therefore, O great being, take these who have arisen by my favor; for even if they are aggressors, not even death should release them. (3-42-29)
अनेन त्वं यदास्त्रेण सङ्ग्रामे विचरिष्यसि। तदा निःक्षत्रिया भूमिर्भविष्यति न संशयः ॥३-४२-३०॥
anena tvaṃ yadāstreṇa saṅgrāme vicariṣyasi। tadā niḥkṣatriyā bhūmirbhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ॥3-42-30॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यदा (yadā) - when; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with the weapon; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; विचरिष्यसि (vicariṣyasi) - you will move about; तदा (tadā) - then; निःक्षत्रिया (niḥkṣatriyā) - bereft of kṣatriyas; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - the earth; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(By this, you, when with the weapon in battle you will move about, then bereft of kṣatriyas the earth will become, not doubt.)
By this weapon, when you move about in battle, then the earth will become bereft of kṣatriyas; there is no doubt. (3-42-30)
ततः कैलासनिलयो धनाध्यक्षोऽभ्यभाषत। दत्तेष्वस्त्रेषु दिव्येषु वरुणेन यमेन च ॥३-४२-३१॥
tataḥ kailāsanilayo dhanādhyakṣo'bhyabhāṣata। datteṣvastreṣu divyeṣu varuṇena yamena ca ॥3-42-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कैलास-निलयः (kailāsa-nilayaḥ) - Kailāsa-dweller; धनाध्यक्षः (dhanādhyakṣaḥ) - lord of wealth; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke; दत्तेषु (datteṣu) - having been given; अस्त्रेषु (astreṣu) - weapons; दिव्येषु (divyeṣu) - divine; वरुणेन (varuṇena) - by Varuṇa; यमेन (yamena) - by Yama; च (ca) - and;]
(Then the Kailāsa-dweller, lord of wealth, spoke. When the divine weapons had been given by Varuṇa and Yama.)
Then the lord of wealth, who dwells on Kailāsa, spoke after the divine weapons had been given by Varuṇa and Yama. (3-42-31)
सव्यसाचिन्महाबाहो पूर्वदेव सनातन। सहास्माभिर्भवाञ्श्रान्तः पुराकल्पेषु नित्यशः ॥३-४२-३२॥
savyasācin-mahābāho pūrva-deva sanātana। sahāsmābhir-bhavāñ-śrāntaḥ purā-kalpeṣu nityaśaḥ ॥3-42-32॥
[सव्यसाचिन् (savyasācin) - ambidextrous one; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; पूर्व (pūrva) - former; देव (deva) - divine one; सनातन (sanātana) - eternal; सह (saha) - together; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - with us; भवान् (bhavān) - you; श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - tired; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कल्पेषु (kalpeṣu) - in aeons; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always;]
(O ambidextrous one, O mighty-armed, former divine eternal one; together with us, you were tired formerly in aeons always.)
O Savyasācin, mighty-armed and eternal divine one of old, you have always grown weary together with us in former aeons. (3-42-32)
मत्तोऽपि त्वं गृहाणास्त्रमन्तर्धानं प्रियं मम। ओजस्तेजोद्युतिहरं प्रस्वापनमरातिहन् ॥३-४२-३३॥
matto'pi tvaṃ gṛhāṇāstram antardhānaṃ priyaṃ mama। ojas tejo dyuti-haraṃ prasvāpanam arāti-han ॥3-42-33॥
[मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; अन्तर्धानम् (antardhānam) - disappearance; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; मम (mama) - my; ओजस् (ojas) - vital energy; तेजस् (tejas) - splendor; द्युतिहरम् (dyuti-haram) - remover of brilliance; प्रस्वापनम् (prasvāpanam) - causing sleep; अरातिहन् (arāti-han) - destroyer of enemies;]
(From me also you accept the weapon of disappearance, dear to me; (it is) remover of vital energy, splendor, brilliance, causing sleep, destroyer of enemies.)
You also accept from me this weapon of disappearance, dear to me; it removes vital energy, splendor, and brilliance, causes sleep, and destroys enemies. (3-42-33)
ततोऽर्जुनो महाबाहुर्विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः। कौबेरमपि जग्राह दिव्यमस्त्रं महाबलः ॥३-४२-३४॥
tato'ṛjuno mahābāhur vidhivat kurunandanaḥ। kauberam api jagrāha divyam astraṃ mahābalaḥ ॥3-42-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - delighter of the Kurus; कौबेरम् (kauberam) - of Kubera; अपि (api) - also; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he obtained; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength;]
(Then Arjuna, mighty-armed, according to rule, delighter of the Kurus, also obtained the divine weapon of Kubera, of great strength.)
Then Arjuna, the mighty-armed delighter of the Kurus, duly obtained the divine weapon of Kubera, being of great strength. (3-42-34)
ततोऽब्रवीद्देवराजः पार्थमक्लिष्टकारिणम्। सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा मेघदुन्दुभिनिस्वनः ॥३-४२-३५॥
tato'bravīd devarājaḥ pārtham akliṣṭakāriṇam। sāntvayan ślakṣṇayā vācā meghadundubhinisvanaḥ ॥3-42-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of the gods; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha; अक्लिष्टकारिणम् (akliṣṭakāriṇam) - one who does unwearied deeds; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; मेघदुन्दुभिनिस्वनः (meghadundubhinisvanaḥ) - having a voice like thunder and drums;]
(Then the king of the gods spoke to Pārtha, the doer of unwearied deeds, consoling with gentle speech, having a voice like thunder and drums.)
Then the king of the gods, with a voice like thunder and drums, gently consoled Pārtha, the tireless doer, with soothing words. (3-42-35)
कुन्तीमातर्महाबाहो त्वमीशानः पुरातनः। परां सिद्धिमनुप्राप्तः साक्षाद्देवगतिं गतः ॥३-४२-३६॥
kuntīmātar-mahābāho tvam-īśānaḥ purātanaḥ। parāṃ siddhim-anuprāptaḥ sākṣād-devagatiṃ gataḥ ॥3-42-36॥
[कुन्तीमातर् (kuntīmātar) - O mother of Kuntī; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ईशानः (īśānaḥ) - the lord; पुरातनः (purātanaḥ) - ancient; पराम् (parām) - supreme; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - attained; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; देवगतिम् (devagatim) - the state of the gods; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(O mother of Kuntī; O mighty-armed; you; the lord; ancient; supreme; perfection; attained; directly; the state of the gods; gone;)
O mother Kuntī, O mighty-armed one, you are the ancient lord; you have attained the supreme perfection and have directly reached the state of the gods. (3-42-36)
देवकार्यं हि सुमहत्त्वया कार्यमरिंदम। आरोढव्यस्त्वया स्वर्गः सज्जीभव महाद्युते ॥३-४२-३७॥
devakāryaṃ hi sumahattvayā kāryam ariṃdama। āroḍhavyas tvayā svargaḥ sajjībhava mahādyute ॥3-42-37॥
[देवकार्यं (devakāryam) - deva—of the gods; kāryam—action; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहत्त्वया (sumahattvayā) - su—very; mahat—great; tvayā—by you; कार्यं (kāryam) - kāryam—action; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - ariṃ—enemy; dama—subduer; आरोढव्यस्त्वया (āroḍhavyas tvayā) - āroḍhavyas—to be ascended; tvayā—by you; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - svargaḥ—heaven; सज्जीभव (sajjībhava) - sajjī—be ready; bhava—become; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - mahā—great; dyute—splendor;]
(The action of the gods indeed by you of great importance, O subduer of enemies, is to be done; heaven is to be ascended by you; be ready, O greatly radiant one.)
Indeed, O subduer of enemies, a task of the gods of great importance is to be performed by you; you must ascend to heaven—be prepared, O one of great splendor. (3-42-37)
रथो मातलिसंयुक्त आगन्ता त्वत्कृते महीम्। तत्र तेऽहं प्रदास्यामि दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि कौरव ॥३-४२-३८॥
ratho mātalisaṃyukta āgantā tvatkṛte mahīm। tatra te'haṃ pradāsyāmi divyānyastrāṇi kaurava ॥3-42-38॥
[रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; मातलि-संयुक्तः (mātali-saṃyuktaḥ) - joined with Mātali; आगन्ता (āgantā) - will come; त्वत्-कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; महीम् (mahīm) - to the earth; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रदास्यामि (pradāsyāmi) - will give; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava;]
(The chariot joined with Mātali will come for your sake to the earth. There to you I will give divine weapons, O Kaurava.)
The chariot with Mātali as charioteer will come to earth for your sake. There, O Kaurava, I will give you divine weapons. (3-42-38)
तान्दृष्ट्वा लोकपालांस्तु समेतान्गिरिमूर्धनि। जगाम विस्मयं धीमान्कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः ॥३-४२-३९॥
tāndṛṣṭvā lokapālāṃstu sametāngirimūrdhani। jagāma vismayaṃ dhīmānkuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ ॥3-42-39॥
[तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; लोकपालान् (lokapālān) - guardians of the worlds; तु (tu) - but; समेतान् (sametān) - assembled; गिरिमूर्धनि (girimūrdhani) - on the mountain summit; जगाम (jagāma) - went; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kuntī; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya;]
(Having seen them, the guardians of the worlds, but assembled on the mountain summit, the wise son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, went to astonishment.)
When the wise son of Kuntī, Dhanañjaya, saw the assembled guardians of the worlds on the mountain summit, he was filled with astonishment. (3-42-39)
ततोऽर्जुनो महातेजा लोकपालान्समागतान्। पूजयामास विधिवद्वाग्भिरद्भिः फलैरपि ॥३-४२-४०॥
tato'ṛjuno mahātejā lokapālānsamāgatān। pūjayāmāsa vidhivadvāgbhiradbhih phalairapi ॥3-42-40॥

(Then Arjuna, of great brilliance, worshipped the assembled guardians of the worlds according to rule, with words, with water, and also with fruits.)

(Then the gods, having duly honored Dhanañjaya, departed; all the wise ones, whose speed is as the mind by desire, by the path by which they had come.)
Then the gods, after duly honoring Dhanañjaya, departed; all the wise ones, swift as thought by their will, went back by the way they had come. (3-42-41)
ततोऽर्जुनो मुदं लेभे लब्धास्त्रः पुरुषर्षभः। कृतार्थमिव चात्मानं स मेने पूर्णमानसः ॥३-४२-४२॥
tato'ṛjuno mudaṃ lebhe labdhāstraḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। kṛtārtham iva cātmānaṃ sa mene pūrṇamānasaḥ ॥3-42-42॥

(Then Arjuna, having obtained weapons, the bull among men, obtained joy; and he, with a fulfilled mind, considered himself as if his purpose was accomplished.)
Then Arjuna, the foremost among men, having obtained the weapons, felt great joy; with a fulfilled mind, he considered himself as if his purpose had been accomplished. (3-42-42)
