sa dadarśa purīṃ ramyāṃ siddhacāraṇasevitām। sarvartukusumaiḥ puṇyaiḥ pādapairupaśobhitām ॥3-44-1॥

(He saw the beautiful city attended by siddhas and cāraṇas, adorned by auspicious trees with flowers of all seasons.)

तत्र सौगन्धिकानां स द्रुमाणां पुण्यगन्धिनाम्। उपवीज्यमानो मिश्रेण वायुना पुण्यगन्धिना ॥३-४४-२॥

नन्दनं च वनं दिव्यमप्सरोगणसेवितम्। ददर्श दिव्यकुसुमैराह्वयद्भिरिव द्रुमैः ॥३-४४-३॥
nandanaṃ ca vanaṃ divyam apsarogaṇasevitam। dadarśa divyakusumair āhvayadbhir iva drumaiḥ ॥3-44-3॥

नातप्ततपसा शक्यो द्रष्टुं नानाहिताग्निना। स लोकः पुण्यकर्तॄणां नापि युद्धपराङ्मुखैः ॥३-४४-४॥
nātaptatapasā śakyo draṣṭuṃ nānāhitāgninā। sa lokaḥ puṇyakartṝṇāṃ nāpi yuddhaparāṅmukhaiḥ ॥3-44-4॥
[न (na) - not; अतप्ततपसा (ataptatapasā) - by one whose austerity is not heated; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; न (na) - not; अनाहिताग्निना (anāhitāgninā) - by one who has not kindled the sacred fire; स (sa) - that; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; पुण्यकर्तॄणाम् (puṇyakartṝṇām) - of the doers of merit; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - even; युद्धपराङ्मुखैः (yuddhaparāṅmukhaiḥ) - by those who turn away from battle;]
(Not by one whose austerity is not heated is it possible to see, not by one who has not kindled the sacred fire. That world of the doers of merit is not even for those who turn away from battle.)
That world of the meritorious cannot be seen by one who has not performed austerities, nor by one who has not kindled the sacred fire. It is not for those who turn away from battle. (3-44-4)
नायज्वभिर्नानृतकैर्न वेदश्रुतिवर्जितैः। नानाप्लुताङ्गैस्तीर्थेषु यज्ञदानबहिष्कृतैः ॥३-४४-५॥
nāyajvabhir nānṛtakair na vedaśrutivarjitaiḥ। nānāplutāṅgais tīrtheṣu yajñadānabahiṣkṛtaiḥ ॥3-44-5॥
[न (na) - not; अयज्वभिः (ayajvabhiḥ) - by non-sacrificers; न (na) - not; अनृतकैः (anṛtakaiḥ) - by untruthful ones; न (na) - not; वेदश्रुति (vedaśruti) - Veda-hearing; वर्जितैः (varjitaiḥ) - excluded; न (na) - not; नानाप्लुताङ्गैः (nānāplutāṅgaiḥ) - with various deformed limbs; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in sacred places; यज्ञदान (yajñadāna) - sacrifice and gift; बहिष्कृतैः (bahiṣkṛtaiḥ) - excluded;]
(Not by non-sacrificers, not by untruthful ones, not by those excluded from hearing the Veda, not by those with various deformed limbs, in sacred places, sacrifice and gift (are) excluded.)
Sacrifices and gifts are not to be performed in sacred places by non-sacrificers, by those who speak untruth, by those excluded from hearing the Veda, or by those with various bodily deformities. (3-44-5)
नापि यज्ञहनैः क्षुद्रैर्द्रष्टुं शक्यः कथञ्चन। पानपैर्गुरुतल्पैश्च मांसादैर्वा दुरात्मभिः ॥३-४४-६॥
nāpi yajñahanaiḥ kṣudrair draṣṭuṃ śakyaḥ kathaṃcana। pānapair gurutalpaiś ca māṃsādair vā durātmabhiḥ ॥3-44-6॥

स तद्दिव्यं वनं पश्यन्दिव्यगीतनिनादितम्। प्रविवेश महाबाहुः शक्रस्य दयितां पुरीम् ॥३-४४-७॥

(He, seeing that divine forest resounded with divine song, the mighty-armed entered the beloved city of Śakra.)

तत्र देवविमानानि कामगानि सहस्रशः। संस्थितान्यभियातानि ददर्शायुतशस्तदा ॥३-४४-८॥

संस्तूयमानो गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च पाण्डवः। पुष्पगन्धवहैः पुण्यैर्वायुभिश्चानुवीजितः ॥३-४४-९॥
saṁstūyamāno gandharvair apsarobhiś ca pāṇḍavaḥ। puṣpagandhavahaiḥ puṇyair vāyubhiś cānuvījitaḥ ॥3-44-9॥
[संस्तूयमानः (saṁstūyamānaḥ) - being praised; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - by Apsarases; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; पुष्पगन्धवहैः (puṣpagandhavahaiḥ) - by those carrying the fragrance of flowers; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - by auspicious; वायुभिः (vāyubhiḥ) - by winds; च (ca) - and; अनुवीजितः (anuvījitaḥ) - fanned;]
(Being praised by Gandharvas and by Apsarases, the son of Pāṇḍu, fanned by auspicious winds carrying the fragrance of flowers, and by winds, and fanned.)

ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः। हृष्टाः सम्पूजयामासुः पार्थमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ॥३-४४-१०॥
tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāś ca paramarṣayaḥ। hṛṣṭāḥ sampūjayāmāsuḥ pārtham akliṣṭakāriṇam ॥3-44-10॥

(Then the gods, with Gandharvas, perfected beings, and supreme sages, joyful, honored Arjuna, the doer of unwearied deeds.)

आशीर्वादैः स्तूयमानो दिव्यवादित्रनिस्वनैः। प्रतिपेदे महाबाहुः शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादितम् ॥३-४४-११॥
āśīrvādaiḥ stūyamāno divya-vāditra-nisvanaiḥ। pratipede mahābāhuḥ śaṅkha-dundubhi-nāditam ॥3-44-11॥
[आशीर्वादैः (āśīrvādaiḥ) - by blessings; स्तूयमानः (stūyamānaḥ) - being praised; दिव्य (divya) - divine; वादित्र (vāditra) - musical instruments; निस्वनैः (nisvanaiḥ) - by sounds; प्रतिपेदे (pratipede) - he attained; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; शङ्ख (śaṅkha) - conch; दुन्दुभि (dundubhi) - drum; नादितम् (nāditam) - resounding;]
(By blessings, being praised, by the sounds of divine musical instruments, the mighty-armed attained the place resounding with conch and drum.)
While being praised with blessings and the sounds of divine musical instruments, the mighty-armed hero reached the place resounding with conch and drum. (3-44-11)
नक्षत्रमार्गं विपुलं सुरवीथीति विश्रुतम्। इन्द्राज्ञया ययौ पार्थः स्तूयमानः समन्ततः ॥३-४४-१२॥
nakṣatramārgaṃ vipulaṃ suravīthīti viśrutam। indrājñayā yayau pārthaḥ stūyamānaḥ samantataḥ ॥3-44-12॥
[नक्षत्रमार्गं (nakṣatramārgaṃ) - star-path; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - vast; सुरवीथी (suravīthī) - gods'-road; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - well-known; इन्द्राज्ञया (indrājñayā) - by Indra's command; ययौ (yayau) - he went; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; स्तूयमानः (stūyamānaḥ) - being praised; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(The star-path, vast, the gods'-road, thus well-known; by Indra's command, Pārtha went, being praised on all sides.)

तत्र साध्यास्तथा विश्वे मरुतोऽथाश्विनावपि। आदित्या वसवो रुद्रास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः ॥३-४४-१३॥
tatra sādhyās tathā viśve maruto’thāśvināv api। ādityā vasavo rudrās tathā brahmarṣayo’malāḥ ॥3-44-13॥

राजर्षयश्च बहवो दिलीपप्रमुखा नृपाः। तुम्बुरुर्नारदश्चैव गन्धर्वौ च हहाहुहू ॥३-४४-१४॥
rājarṣayaś ca bahavo dilīpapramukhā nṛpāḥ। tumburur nāradaś caiva gandharvau ca hahāhuhū ॥3-44-14॥

तान्सर्वान्स समागम्य विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः। ततोऽपश्यद्देवराजं शतक्रतुमरिंदमम् ॥३-४४-१५॥
tān sarvān sa samāgamya vidhivat kurunandanaḥ। tato'paśyad devarājaṃ śatakratum ariṃdamam ॥3-44-15॥

ततः पार्थो महाबाहुरवतीर्य रथोत्तमात्। ददर्श साक्षाद्देवेन्द्रं पितरं पाकशासनम् ॥३-४४-१६॥
tataḥ pārtho mahābāhur avatīrya rathottamāt। dadarśa sākṣād devendraṃ pitaraṃ pākaśāsanam ॥3-44-16॥

पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण हेमदण्डेन चारुणा। दिव्यगन्धाधिवासेन व्यजनेन विधूयता ॥३-४४-१७॥
pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa hemadaṇḍena cāruṇā। divyagandhādhivāsena vyajanena vidhūyatā ॥3-44-17॥

विश्वावसुप्रभृतिभिर्गन्धर्वैः स्तुतिवन्दनैः। स्तूयमानं द्विजाग्र्यैश्च ऋग्यजुःसामसंस्तवैः ॥३-४४-१८॥
viśvāvasu-prabhṛtibhir gandharvaiḥ stuti-vandanaiḥ। stūyamānaṃ dvijāgryaiś ca ṛg-yajuḥ-sāma-saṃstavaiḥ ॥3-44-18॥
[विश्वावसु (viśvāvasu) - Viśvāvasu (name of a Gandharva); प्रभृतिभिः (prabhṛtibhiḥ) - and others; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; स्तुतिवन्दनैः (stuti-vandanaiḥ) - with praise and salutations; स्तूयमानं (stūyamānam) - being praised; द्विजाग्र्यैः (dvijāgryaiḥ) - by foremost Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; ऋग्यजुःसामसंस्तवैः (ṛg-yajuḥ-sāma-saṃstavaiḥ) - with hymns from Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma Vedas;]

ततोऽभिगम्य कौन्तेयः शिरसाभ्यनमद्बली। स चैनमनुवृत्ताभ्यां भुजाभ्यां प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥३-४४-१९॥
tato'bhigamya kaunteyaḥ śirasā'bhyanamadbali. sa cainamanuvṛttābhyāṃ bhujābhyāṃ pratyagṛhṇata ॥3-44-19॥

ततः शक्रासने पुण्ये देवराजर्षिपूजिते। शक्रः पाणौ गृहीत्वैनमुपावेशयदन्तिके ॥३-४४-२०॥

(Then, on Indra's seat, holy, worshipped by the king of gods and sages, Indra, having taken him by the hand, caused him to sit near.)

मूर्ध्नि चैनमुपाघ्राय देवेन्द्रः परवीरहा। अङ्कमारोपयामास प्रश्रयावनतं तदा ॥३-४४-२१॥
mūrdhni cainam upāghrāya devendraḥ paravīrahā। aṅkam āropayāmāsa praśrayāvanataṃ tadā ॥3-44-21॥

(On the head and him having smelled, Indra of the gods, destroyer of enemy heroes, lap caused to be placed, bowed down with humility, then.)
Then Indra, the destroyer of enemy heroes, after smelling him on the head, placed him, who was bowed down with humility, on his lap. (3-44-21)
सहस्राक्षनियोगात्स पार्थः शक्रासनं तदा। अध्यक्रामदमेयात्मा द्वितीय इव वासवः ॥३-४४-२२॥
sahasrākṣaniyogātsa pārthaḥ śakrāsanaṃ tadā। adhyakrāmadameyātmā dvitīya iva vāsavaḥ ॥3-44-22॥
[सहस्राक्षनियोगात् (sahasrākṣa-niyogāt) - by the command of Sahasrākṣa (Indra); स (sa) - he; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शक्रासनं (śakrāsanam) - the seat of Śakra (Indra); तदा (tadā) - then; अध्यक्रामत् (adhyakrāmat) - ascended; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable self; द्वितीय (dvitīya) - second; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra);]
(By the command of Sahasrākṣa (Indra), he, Pārtha, the seat of Śakra (Indra), then ascended, of immeasurable self, second like Vāsava (Indra).)
Then, by the command of Sahasrākṣa (Indra), Pārtha (Arjuna), whose self was immeasurable, ascended the seat of Śakra (Indra), like a second Vāsava (Indra). (3-44-22)
ततः प्रेम्णा वृत्रशत्रुरर्जुनस्य शुभं मुखम्। पस्पर्श पुण्यगन्धेन करेण परिसान्त्वयन् ॥३-४४-२३॥
tataḥ premṇā vṛtraśatrur arjunasya śubhaṃ mukham। pasparśa puṇyagandhena kareṇa parisāntvayan ॥3-44-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with affection; वृत्रशत्रुः (vṛtraśatruḥ) - Vṛtra's enemy; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; मुखम् (mukham) - face; पस्पर्श (pasparśa) - touched; पुण्यगन्धेन (puṇyagandhena) - with auspicious fragrance; करेण (kareṇa) - with (his) hand; परिसान्त्वयन् (parisāntvayan) - soothing;]
(Then, with affection, Vṛtra's enemy touched Arjuna's auspicious face with (his) hand having auspicious fragrance, soothing (him).)
Then, with affection, Indra (the enemy of Vṛtra) gently touched Arjuna's auspicious face with his fragrant hand, soothing him. (3-44-23)
परिमार्जमानः शनकैर्बाहू चास्यायतौ शुभौ। ज्याशरक्षेपकठिनौ स्तम्भाविव हिरण्मयौ ॥३-४४-२४॥
parimārjamānaḥ śanakair bāhū cāsya āyatau śubhau। jyā-śara-kṣepa-kaṭhinau stambhau iva hiraṇmayau ॥3-44-24॥
[परिमार्जमानः (parimārjamānaḥ) - wiping; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; आयतौ (āyatau) - long; शुभौ (śubhau) - beautiful; ज्या (jyā) - bowstring; शर (śara) - arrow; क्षेप (kṣepa) - throwing; कठिनौ (kaṭhinau) - hard; स्तम्भौ (stambhau) - pillars; इव (iva) - like; हिरण्मयौ (hiraṇmayau) - golden;]
(Wiping slowly, his arms, long, beautiful, hard for bowstring and arrow throwing, like golden pillars.)
He, wiping slowly, had long and beautiful arms, hard for drawing the bowstring and shooting arrows, like golden pillars. (3-44-24)
वज्रग्रहणचिह्नेन करेण बलसूदनः। मुहुर्मुहुर्वज्रधरो बाहू संस्फालयञ्शनैः ॥३-४४-२५॥
vajragrahaṇacihnena kareṇa balasūdanaḥ। muhurmuhurvajradharo bāhū saṃsphālayañśanaiḥ ॥3-44-25॥
[वज्रग्रहणचिह्नेन (vajragrahaṇacihnena) - by the mark of grasping the vajra; करेण (kareṇa) - by the hand; बलसूदनः (balasūdanaḥ) - destroyer of strength; मुःमुहुः (muhurmuhur) - again and again; वज्रधरः (vajradharaḥ) - the vajra-holder; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; संस्फालयन् (saṃsphālayañ) - striking together; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly;]
(By the mark of grasping the vajra, by the hand, the destroyer of strength, again and again, the vajra-holder, arms, striking together, slowly.)
The destroyer of strength, the vajra-holder, repeatedly and slowly struck his arms together with the hand marked by grasping the vajra. (3-44-25)
स्मयन्निव गुडाकेशं प्रेक्षमाणः सहस्रदृक्। हर्षेणोत्फुल्लनयनो न चातृप्यत वृत्रहा ॥३-४४-२६॥
smayanniva guḍākeśaṃ prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasradṛk। harṣeṇotphullanayano na cātṛpyata vṛtrahā ॥3-44-26॥
[स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; गुडाकेशम् (guḍākeśam) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); प्रेक्षमाणः (prekṣamāṇaḥ) - looking at; सहस्रदृक् (sahasradṛk) - thousand-eyed (epithet of Indra); हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; उत्फुल्लनयनः (utphullanayanaḥ) - with eyes expanded; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अतृप्यत (atṛpyata) - was not satisfied; वृत्रहा (vṛtrahā) - Vṛtrahā (slayer of Vṛtra, Indra);]
(Smiling as if, at Guḍākeśa, looking, the thousand-eyed, with joy, with eyes expanded, not and was not satisfied, Vṛtrahā;)
Vṛtrahā (Indra), smiling as if at Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), gazed at him with eyes expanded in joy, and the thousand-eyed one was not satisfied (with looking at him). (3-44-26)
एकासनोपविष्टौ तौ शोभयां चक्रतुः सभाम्। सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ व्योम्नि चतुर्दश्यामिवोदितौ ॥३-४४-२७॥
ekāsanopaviṣṭau tau śobhayāṃ cakratuḥ sabhām। sūryācandramasau vyomni caturdaśyām ivoditau ॥3-44-27॥
[एकासने (ekāsane) - on one seat; उपविष्टौ (upaviṣṭau) - seated (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; शोभयाम् (śobhayām) - splendour; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - made (dual); सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ (sūryācandramasau) - the Sun and the Moon (dual); व्योम्नि (vyomni) - in the sky; चतुर्दश्याम् (caturdaśyām) - on the fourteenth (lunar day); इव (iva) - like; उदितौ (uditau) - risen (dual);]
(On one seat, seated, those two, splendour, made, assembly. The Sun and the Moon, in the sky, on the fourteenth, like, risen.)
Seated together on one seat, those two made the assembly splendid, like the Sun and the Moon risen in the sky on the fourteenth day. (3-44-27)
तत्र स्म गाथा गायन्ति साम्ना परमवल्गुना। गन्धर्वास्तुम्बुरुश्रेष्ठाः कुशला गीतसामसु ॥३-४४-२८॥
tatra sma gāthā gāyanti sāmnā paramavalgunā। gandharvāstumbaruśreṣṭhāḥ kuśalā gītasāmasu ॥3-44-28॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्म (sma) - indeed; गाथा (gāthā) - songs; गायन्ति (gāyanti) - sing; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with Sāman (melodious chant); परमवल्गुना (paramavalgunā) - with supremely sweet (voice); गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; तुम्बुरुश्रेष्ठाः (tumburuśreṣṭhāḥ) - the best among Tumburu; कुशलाः (kuśalāḥ) - skilled; गीतसामसु (gītasāmasu) - in song and Sāman;]
(There indeed songs sing with Sāman with supremely sweet (voice); the Gandharvas, the best among Tumburu, skilled in song and Sāman.)
There, indeed, the Gandharvas, the foremost among Tumburu, skilled in song and Sāman, sing songs with supremely melodious Sāman. (3-44-28)
घृताची मेनका रम्भा पूर्वचित्तिः स्वयम्प्रभा। उर्वशी मिश्रकेशी च डुण्डुर्गौरी वरूथिनी ॥३-४४-२९॥
ghṛtācī menakā rambhā pūrvacittiḥ svayamprabhā। urvaśī miśrakeśī ca ḍuṇḍurgaurī varūthinī ॥3-44-29॥

Ghṛtācī, Menakā, Rambhā, Pūrvacittiḥ, Svayamprabhā, Urvaśī, Miśrakeśī, Ḍuṇḍurgaurī, and Varūthinī were (the apsarases). (3-44-29)
गोपाली सहजन्या च कुम्भयोनिः प्रजागरा। चित्रसेना चित्रलेखा सहा च मधुरस्वरा ॥३-४४-३०॥
gopālī sahajanyā ca kumbhayoniḥ prajāgarā। citrasenā citralekhā sahā ca madhurasvarā ॥3-44-30॥

एताश्चान्याश्च ननृतुस्तत्र तत्र वराङ्गनाः। चित्तप्रमथने युक्ताः सिद्धानां पद्मलोचनाः ॥३-४४-३१॥
etāś cānyāś ca nanṛtuḥ tatra tatra varāṅganāḥ। citta-pramathane yuktāḥ siddhānāṃ padma-locanāḥ ॥3-44-31॥
[एताः (etāḥ) - these (feminine); च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - others (feminine); च (ca) - and; ननृतुः (nanṛtuḥ) - danced; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; वराङ्गनाः (varāṅganāḥ) - excellent women; चित्तप्रमथने (citta-pramathane) - in the agitation of the mind; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged; सिद्धानाम् (siddhānām) - of the siddhas; पद्मलोचनाः (padma-locanāḥ) - lotus-eyed (women);]
(These and others and danced there there excellent women in the agitation of the mind engaged of the siddhas lotus-eyed (women).)
These and other excellent women, lotus-eyed, engaged in agitating the minds of the siddhas, danced here and there. (3-44-31)
महाकटितटश्रोण्यः कम्पमानैः पयोधरैः। कटाक्षहावमाधुर्यैश्चेतोबुद्धिमनोहराः ॥३-४४-३२॥
mahā-kaṭi-taṭa-śroṇyaḥ kampamānaiḥ payodharaīḥ। kaṭākṣa-hāva-mādhuryaīś cetobuddhi-mano-harāḥ ॥3-44-32॥
[महाकटितटश्रोण्यः (mahā-kaṭi-taṭa-śroṇyaḥ) - of great-hipped women; कम्पमानैः (kampamānaiḥ) - with quivering; पयोधरैः (payodharaīḥ) - with breasts; कटाक्षहावमाधुर्यैः (kaṭākṣa-hāva-mādhuryaīḥ) - with the sweetness of sidelong glances and gestures; चेतोबुद्धिमनोहराः (ceto-buddhi-mano-harāḥ) - enchanting the mind, intellect, and heart;]
(Of great-hipped women, with quivering breasts, with the sweetness of sidelong glances and gestures, enchanting the mind, intellect, and heart.)
Women with broad hips and quivering breasts, whose sidelong glances and graceful gestures are sweet, enchant the mind, intellect, and heart. (3-44-32)
