ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः समादायार्घ्यमुत्तमम्। शक्रस्य मतमाज्ञाय पार्थमानर्चुरञ्जसा ॥३-४५-१॥
tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ samādāyārghyamuttamam। śakrasya matamājñāya pārthamānarcurañjasā ॥3-45-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सगन्धर्वाः (sagandharvāḥ) - together with gandharvas; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering of water; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; मतम् (matam) - opinion; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having known; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha; अनर्चुः (anarcuḥ) - honored; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - quickly;]
(Then the gods together with the gandharvas, having taken the excellent offering of water, having known the opinion of Śakra, quickly honored Pārtha.)
Then the gods along with the gandharvas, after taking the excellent water offering and understanding Śakra's opinion, quickly honored Pārtha. (3-45-1)
पाद्यमाचमनीयं च प्रतिग्राह्य नृपात्मजम्। प्रवेशयामासुरथो पुरंदरनिवेशनम् ॥३-४५-२॥
pādyam ācamanīyam ca pratigrāhya nṛpātmajam। praveśayām āsur atho puraṃdara-niveśanam ॥3-45-2॥
[पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; आचमनीयं (ācamanīyam) - water for sipping; च (ca) - and; प्रतिग्राह्य (pratigrāhya) - having accepted; नृपात्मजम् (nṛpātmajam) - the prince; (son of the king); प्रवेशयाम् (praveśayām) - caused to enter; आसुः (āsuḥ) - they made; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; पुरंदरनिवेशनम् (puraṃdara-niveśanam) - Indra's residence;]
(Having accepted water for washing feet and for sipping, the prince; then indeed they made (him) enter Indra's residence.)
After receiving water for washing the feet and for sipping, the prince was then ushered into Indra's palace. (3-45-2)
एवं सम्पूजितो जिष्णुरुवास भवने पितुः। उपशिक्षन्महास्त्राणि ससंहाराणि पाण्डवः ॥३-४५-३॥
evaṃ sampūjito jiṣṇuruvāsa bhavane pituḥ। upaśikṣanmahāstrāṇi sasaṃhārāṇi pāṇḍavaḥ ॥3-45-3॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - having been honored; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; भवने (bhavane) - in the house; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; उपशिक्षन् (upaśikṣan) - learning under; महास्त्राणि (mahāstrāṇi) - great weapons; ससंहाराणि (sasaṃhārāṇi) - with their withdrawal (methods); पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu;]
(Thus, having been honored, the victorious one dwelt in the house of his father, learning under (him) the great weapons with their withdrawal (methods), the son of Pāṇḍu.)
Thus, after being honored, the victorious Arjuna stayed in his father's house, learning from him the use of great weapons along with their methods of withdrawal. (3-45-3)
शक्रस्य हस्ताद्दयितं वज्रमस्त्रं दुरुत्सहम्। अशनीश्च महानादा मेघबर्हिणलक्षणाः ॥३-४५-४॥
śakrasya hastāddayitaṃ vajramastraṃ durutsaham। aśanīś ca mahānādā meghabarhiṇalakṣaṇāḥ ॥3-45-4॥
[शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); हस्तात् (hastāt) - from the hand; दयितं (dayitaṃ) - beloved; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; दुरुत्सहम् (durutsaham) - hard to withstand; अशनीः (aśanīḥ) - thunderbolts; च (ca) - and; महानादाः (mahānādāḥ) - having great sound; मेघबर्हिणलक्षणाः (meghabarhiṇalakṣaṇāḥ) - marked by cloud-peacock (having the marks of clouds and peacocks);]
(Of Śakra (Indra), from the hand, beloved, thunderbolt, weapon, hard to withstand; thunderbolts and having great sound, marked by cloud-peacock;)
The beloved thunderbolt weapon, hard to withstand, from the hand of Śakra (Indra); thunderbolts with great sound, marked by the features of clouds and peacocks. (3-45-4)
गृहीतास्त्रस्तु कौन्तेयो भ्रातॄन्सस्मार पाण्डवः। पुरंदरनियोगाच्च पञ्चाब्दमवसत्सुखी ॥३-४५-५॥
gṛhītāstras tu kaunteyo bhrātṝn sasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ। puraṃdara-niyogāc ca pañcābdam avasat sukhī ॥3-45-5॥
[गृहीतास्त्रः (gṛhītāstraḥ) - having taken up weapons; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - Indra; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by the command; च (ca) - and; पञ्च (pañca) - five; अब्दम् (abdam) - years; अवसत् (avasat) - dwelt; सुखी (sukhī) - happily;]
(Having taken up weapons but the son of Kunti remembered brothers, the Pandava. By the command of Indra and five years dwelt happily.)
But having taken up arms, the son of Kunti, the Pandava, remembered his brothers. By the command of Indra, he lived happily for five years. (3-45-5)
ततः शक्रोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं कृतास्त्रं काल आगते। नृत्तं गीतं च कौन्तेय चित्रसेनादवाप्नुहि ॥३-४५-६॥
tataḥ śakro'bravīt pārthaṃ kṛtāstraṃ kāla āgate। nṛttaṃ gītaṃ ca kaunteya citrasenād avāpnuhi ॥3-45-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Pārtha (Arjuna); कृतास्त्रम् (kṛtāstram) - one who has mastered weapons; काल (kāla) - time; आगते (āgate) - having arrived; नृत्तम् (nṛttam) - dance; गीतम् (gītam) - song; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; चित्रसेनात् (citrasenāt) - from Citraseṇa; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - obtain;]
(Then Indra said to Pārtha, who had mastered weapons, when the time had arrived: O son of Kunti, obtain dance and song from Citraseṇa.)
Then Indra said to Arjuna, who had mastered the weapons, when the time had come: "O son of Kunti, learn dance and music from Citraseṇa." (3-45-6)
वादित्रं देवविहितं नृलोके यन्न विद्यते। तदर्जयस्व कौन्तेय श्रेयो वै ते भविष्यति ॥३-४५-७॥
vāditraṃ devavihitaṃ nṛloke yan na vidyate। tadarjayasva kaunteya śreyo vai te bhaviṣyati ॥3-45-7॥
[वादित्रं (vāditram) - musical instrument; देवविहितं (devavihitam) - ordained by the gods; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the world of men; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; विध्यते (vidyate) - is found; तत् (tat) - that; अर्जयस्व (arjayasva) - acquire; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; वै (vai) - indeed; ते (te) - for you; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Musical instrument ordained by the gods in the world of men which is not found, that acquire, O son of Kunti; better indeed for you will be.)
O son of Kunti, acquire any musical instrument ordained by the gods that is not found in the world of men; it will indeed be better for you. (3-45-7)
सखायं प्रददौ चास्य चित्रसेनं पुरंदरः। स तेन सह सङ्गम्य रेमे पार्थो निरामयः ॥३-४५-८॥
sakhāyaṃ pradadau cāsya citrasenaṃ puraṃdaraḥ। sa tena saha saṅgamya reme pārtho nirāmayaḥ ॥3-45-8॥
[सखायम् (sakhāyam) - friend; (accusative singular); प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; (3rd person singular past); च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; (genitive singular); चित्रसेनम् (citrasenam) - Citrasena; (accusative singular); पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara; (Indra); स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - with him; (instrumental singular); सह (saha) - together; with; सङ्गम्य (saṅgamya) - having united; having met; रेमे (reme) - enjoyed; (3rd person singular past); पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; (Arjuna); निरामयः (nirāmayaḥ) - free from affliction; healthy;]
(Purandara gave Citrasena as a friend to him and. He, having united with him, Pārtha, free from affliction, enjoyed.)
Purandara (Indra) gave Citrasena as a friend to him. Then, having joined with him, Pārtha (Arjuna), free from affliction, enjoyed himself. (3-45-8)
कदाचिदटमानस्तु महर्षिरुत लोमशः। जगाम शक्रभवनं पुरंदरदिदृक्षया ॥३-४५-९॥
kadācid aṭamānas tu maharṣir uta lomaśaḥ। jagāma śakrabhavanaṃ puraṃdaradidṛkṣayā ॥3-45-9॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; अटमानः (aṭamānaḥ) - wandering; तु (tu) - but; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; उत (uta) - indeed; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomasha; जगाम (jagāma) - went; शक्रभवनम् (śakrabhavanam) - Indra's abode; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - Purandara (Indra); दिदृक्षया (didṛkṣayā) - with the desire to see;]
(At some time, wandering, but the great sage indeed Lomasha went to Indra's abode with the desire to see Purandara.)
Once, while wandering, the great sage Lomasha went to Indra's abode, wishing to see Purandara (Indra). (3-45-9)
स समेत्य नमस्कृत्य देवराजं महामुनिः। ददर्शार्धासनगतं पाण्डवं वासवस्य ह ॥३-४५-१०॥
sa sametya namaskṛtya devarājaṃ mahāmuniḥ। dadarśārdhāsanagataṃ pāṇḍavaṃ vāsavasya ha ॥3-45-10॥
[स (sa) - he; समेत्य (sametya) - having approached; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; देवराजं (devarājam) - the king of the gods; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; अर्धासनगतं (ardhāsanagatam) - seated on half the seat; पाण्डवं (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava; वासवस्य (vāsavasya) - of Vāsava; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, having approached and having bowed to the king of the gods, the great sage saw the Pāṇḍava seated on half the seat of Vāsava indeed.)
Having approached and bowed to the king of the gods, the great sage saw the Pāṇḍava seated on half of Vāsava's throne. (3-45-10)
ततः शक्राभ्यनुज्ञात आसने विष्टरोत्तरे। निषसाद द्विजश्रेष्ठः पूज्यमानो महर्षिभिः ॥३-४५-११॥
tataḥ śakrābhyanujñāta āsane viṣṭarottare। niṣasāda dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ pūjyamāno maharṣibhiḥ ॥3-45-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; शक्राभ्यनुज्ञात (śakrābhyanujñāta) - permitted by Śakra; आसने (āsane) - on the seat; विष्टरोत्तरे (viṣṭarottare) - with a cover/spread placed; निषसाद (niṣasāda) - sat down; द्विजश्रेष्ठः (dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among twice-born; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by the great sages;]
(Then, permitted by Śakra, on the seat with a cover placed, the best among twice-born sat down, being honored by the great sages.)
Then, with Śakra's permission, the foremost of the twice-born sat down on the seat covered with a spread, being honored by the great sages. (3-45-11)
तस्य दृष्ट्वाभवद्बुद्धिः पार्थमिन्द्रासने स्थितम्। कथं नु क्षत्रियः पार्थः शक्रासनमवाप्तवान् ॥३-४५-१२॥
tasya dṛṣṭvābhavadbuddhiḥ pārtham indrāsane sthitam। kathaṁ nu kṣatriyaḥ pārthaḥ śakrāsanam avāptavān ॥3-45-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thought; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); इन्द्रासने (indrāsane) - on Indra's seat; स्थितम् (sthitam) - situated; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); शक्रासनम् (śakrāsanam) - Indra's seat; अवाप्तवान् (avāptavān) - has obtained;]
(Of him, having seen, arose, thought; Pārtha (Arjuna), on Indra's seat, situated; how, indeed, warrior, Pārtha (Arjuna), Indra's seat, has obtained.)
Seeing Pārtha (Arjuna) seated on Indra's throne, a thought arose in his mind: 'How indeed has the warrior Pārtha obtained Indra's seat?' (3-45-12)
किं त्वस्य सुकृतं कर्म लोका वा के विनिर्जिताः। य एवमुपसम्प्राप्तः स्थानं देवनमस्कृतम् ॥३-४५-१३॥
kiṁ tvasya sukṛtaṁ karma lokā vā ke vinirjitāḥ। ya evamupasamprāptaḥ sthānaṁ devanamaskṛtam ॥3-45-13॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; अस्य (asya) - of him; सुकृतं (sukṛtaṁ) - well-done; virtuous; कर्म (karma) - action; लोका (lokā) - worlds; वा (vā) - or; के (ke) - which; who; विनिर्जिताः (vinirjitāḥ) - conquered; य (ya) - who; एवम् (evam) - thus; उपसम्प्राप्तः (upasamprāptaḥ) - having attained; स्थानं (sthānaṁ) - place; देवनमस्कृतम् (devanamaskṛtam) - worshipped by the gods;]
(What but of him well-done action worlds or which conquered; who thus having attained place worshipped by the gods;)
But what are his virtuous actions, or which worlds has he conquered? Who, having thus attained the place worshipped by the gods? (3-45-13)
तस्य विज्ञाय सङ्कल्पं शक्रो वृत्रनिषूदनः। लोमशं प्रहसन्वाक्यमिदमाह शचीपतिः ॥३-४५-१४॥
tasya vijñāya saṅkalpaṃ śakro vṛtraniṣūdanaḥ। lomaśaṃ prahasan vākyam idam āha śacīpatiḥ ॥3-45-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - intention; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; वृत्रनिषूदनः (vṛtraniṣūdanaḥ) - destroyer of Vṛtra; लोमशं (lomaśam) - Lomaśa; प्रहसन् (prahassan) - smiling; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; इदम् (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - lord of Śacī;]
(Of him, having understood the intention, Indra, destroyer of Vṛtra, to Lomaśa, smiling, this speech said, lord of Śacī.)
Having understood his intention, Indra, the destroyer of Vṛtra and lord of Śacī, smiled and said these words to Lomaśa. (3-45-14)
ब्रह्मर्षे श्रूयतां यत्ते मनसैतद्विवक्षितम्। नायं केवलमर्त्यो वै क्षत्रियत्वमुपागतः ॥३-४५-१५॥
brahmarṣe śrūyatāṃ yat te manasaitad vivakṣitam। nāyaṃ kevalam artyo vai kṣatriyatvam upāgataḥ ॥3-45-15॥
[ब्रह्मर्षे (brahmarṣe) - O brāhmaṇa-ṛṣi; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - by you; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; एतत् (etat) - this; विवक्षितम् (vivakṣitam) - intended to be spoken; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; अर्त्यः (artyaḥ) - mortal; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षत्रियत्वम् (kṣatriyatvam) - the state of being a kṣatriya; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - has attained;]
(O brāhmaṇa-ṛṣi, let it be heard which by you by mind this intended to be spoken. Not this only mortal indeed the state of being a kṣatriya has attained.)
O brāhmaṇa-ṛṣi, listen to what you have intended in your mind to say. This person is not merely a mortal; indeed, he has attained the status of a kṣatriya. (3-45-15)
महर्षे मम पुत्रोऽयं कुन्त्यां जातो महाभुजः। अस्त्रहेतोरिह प्राप्तः कस्माच्चित्कारणान्तरात् ॥३-४५-१६॥
maharṣe mama putro'yaṁ kuntyāṁ jāto mahābhujaḥ। astrahetoriha prāptaḥ kasmāccitkāraṇāntarāt ॥3-45-16॥
[महर्षे (maharṣe) - O great sage; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अयम् (ayam) - this; कुन्त्याम् (kuntyām) - in Kunti; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - mighty-armed; अस्त्रहेतोः (astrahetoḥ) - for the sake of weapons; इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what; चित् (cit) - certain; कारणान्तरात् (kāraṇāntarāt) - from another reason;]
(O great sage, my son, this (one), born in Kunti, mighty-armed, for the sake of weapons, here, has come, from what certain other reason.)
O great sage, this son of mine, born of Kunti and mighty-armed, has come here for weapons, but for what other reason has he come? (3-45-16)
अहो नैनं भवान्वेत्ति पुराणमृषिसत्तमम्। शृणु मे वदतो ब्रह्मन्योऽयं यच्चास्य कारणम् ॥३-४५-१७॥
aho nainaṁ bhavān vetti purāṇam ṛṣisattamam। śṛṇu me vadato brahman yo'yaṁ yaccāsya kāraṇam ॥3-45-17॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - him; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); वेत्ति (vetti) - know; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - best of sages; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - my; वदतः (vadataḥ) - speaking; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; यत् (yat) - what; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause;]
(Indeed, you do not know him, the ancient best of sages. Hear from me, O Brahman, as I speak, who this is and what also is his cause. (3-45-17))
Indeed, you do not know him, the ancient and foremost of sages. Listen to me, O Brahman, as I tell you who he is and what his cause is. (3-45-17)
नरनारायणौ यौ तौ पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ। ताविमावभिजानीहि हृषीकेशधनञ्जयौ ॥३-४५-१८॥
naranārāyaṇau yau tau purāṇāvṛṣisattamau। tāvimāvabhijānīhi hṛṣīkeśadhanañjayau ॥3-45-18॥
[नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; यौ (yau) - who (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; पुराण (purāṇa) - ancient; ऋषिसत्तमौ (ṛṣisattamau) - the best among sages (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; इमौ (imau) - these two; अभिजानीहि (abhijānīhi) - recognize; हृषीकेश (hṛṣīkeśa) - Hṛṣīkeśa; धनञ्जयौ (dhanañjayau) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna, dual);]
(Nara and Nārāyaṇa, who are those two ancient best among sages; those two, recognize as these two, Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanañjaya;)
Know that Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanañjaya here are those two ancient best among sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa. (3-45-18)
यन्न शक्यं सुरैर्द्रष्टुमृषिभिर्वा महात्मभिः। तदाश्रमपदं पुण्यं बदरी नाम विश्रुतम् ॥३-४५-१९॥
yanna śakyaṃ surair draṣṭum ṛṣibhir vā mahātmabhiḥ। tad āśramapadaṃ puṇyaṃ badarī nāma viśrutam ॥3-45-19॥
[यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; वा (vā) - or; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great souls; तत् (tat) - that; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadam) - hermitage place; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; बदरी (badarī) - Badarī; नाम (nāma) - named; विश्रुतम् (viśrutam) - renowned;]
(That hermitage place, holy, named Badarī, which is not possible to be seen by the gods, or by sages, or by great souls.)
That sacred hermitage known as Badarī is renowned as a place which even the gods, sages, or great souls are unable to behold. (3-45-19)
स निवासोऽभवद्विप्र विष्णोर्जिष्णोस्तथैव च। यतः प्रववृते गङ्गा सिद्धचारणसेविता ॥३-४५-२०॥
sa nivāso'bhavad vipra viṣṇoḥ jiṣṇoḥ tathaiva ca। yataḥ pravavṛte gaṅgā siddha-cāraṇa-sevitā ॥3-45-20॥
[स (sa) - that; निवासः (nivāsaḥ) - abode; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; जिष्णोः (jiṣṇoḥ) - of Jiṣṇu; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; प्रववृते (pravavṛte) - proceeded; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; सिद्ध (siddha) - perfected being; चारण (cāraṇa) - celestial minstrel; सेविता (sevitā) - served;]
(That abode became, O brāhmaṇa, of Viṣṇu, of Jiṣṇu likewise and; from where proceeded Gaṅgā served by siddhas and cāraṇas.)
That place became the abode of Viṣṇu and Jiṣṇu as well, O brāhmaṇa; from there the Gaṅgā, attended by siddhas and cāraṇas, flowed forth. (3-45-20)
तौ मन्नियोगाद्ब्रह्मर्षे क्षितौ जातौ महाद्युती। भूमेर्भारावतरणं महावीर्यौ करिष्यतः ॥३-४५-२१॥
tau manniyogādbrahmarṣe kṣitau jātau mahādyutī। bhūmerbhārāvataraṇaṃ mahāvīryau kariṣyataḥ ॥3-45-21॥

(Those two, by my command, O Brahmarṣi, born on earth, of great splendor, for the removal of the earth's burden, of great might, will accomplish.)
O Brahmarṣi, by my command, those two of great splendor and might have been born on earth and will accomplish the removal of the earth's burden. (3-45-21)
उद्वृत्ता ह्यसुराः केचिन्निवातकवचा इति। विप्रियेषु स्थितास्माकं वरदानेन मोहिताः ॥३-४५-२२॥
udvṛttā hy asurāḥ kecin nivātakavacā iti। vipriyeṣu sthitāsmākaṃ varadānena mohitāḥ ॥3-45-22॥
[उद्वृत्ता (udvṛttā) - arrogant; raised up; हि (hi) - indeed; असुराः (asurāḥ) - asuras; demons; केचित् (kecit) - some; निवातकवचाः (nivātakavacāḥ) - Nivātakavacas; (a class of asuras); इति (iti) - thus; so-called; विप्रियेषु (vipriyeṣu) - in those who are hostile; in enemies; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - situated; standing; अस्माकं (asmākam) - our; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the boon; by the granting of a boon; मोहिताः (mohitāḥ) - deluded; bewildered;]
(Arrogant indeed are the asuras, some called Nivātakavacas thus. In those who are hostile, situated among our (enemies), by the boon, (they are) deluded.)
Indeed, some of the asuras, known as the Nivātakavacas, have become arrogant. They have taken a stand among our enemies and, due to the boon, have become deluded. (3-45-22)
तर्कयन्ते सुरान्हन्तुं बलदर्पसमन्विताः। देवान्न गणयन्ते च तथा दत्तवरा हि ते ॥३-४५-२३॥
tarkayante surān hantuṃ baladarpa-samanvitāḥ। devān na gaṇayante ca tathā dattavarā hi te ॥3-45-23॥
[तर्कयन्ते (tarkayante) - they consider; they deliberate; सुरान् (surān) - the gods; हन्तुम् (hantuṃ) - to kill; to slay; बलदर्पसमन्विताः (baladarpa-samanvitāḥ) - endowed with pride of strength; देवान् (devān) - the gods; न (na) - not; गणयन्ते (gaṇayante) - they regard; they count; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; दत्तवरा (dattavarā) - granted boons; having received boons; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; ते (te) - they;]
(They consider to kill the gods, endowed with pride of strength; the gods they do not regard and thus, having received boons, indeed they.)
Endowed with the pride of strength and having received boons, they contemplate killing the gods; they do not regard the gods at all. (3-45-23)
पातालवासिनो रौद्रा दनोः पुत्रा महाबलाः। सर्वे देवनिकाया हि नालं योधयितुं स्म तान् ॥३-४५-२४॥
pātālavāsino raudrā danoḥ putrā mahābalāḥ। sarve devanīkāyā hi nālaṃ yodhayituṃ sma tān ॥3-45-24॥
[पातालवासिनः (pātālavāsinaḥ) - inhabitants of the netherworld; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) - fierce ones; दनोः (danoḥ) - of Danu; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवनिकायाः (devanikāyāḥ) - of the host of gods; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - capable; योधयितुम् (yodhayitum) - to fight; स्म (sma) - indeed; तान् (tān) - them;]
(Inhabitants of the netherworld, fierce ones, sons of Danu, of great strength; all of the host of gods indeed were not capable to fight them indeed.)
The fierce and mighty sons of Danu, dwellers of the netherworld, were so powerful that not even all the hosts of the gods were able to fight them. (3-45-24)
योऽसौ भूमिगतः श्रीमान्विष्णुर्मधुनिषूदनः। कपिलो नाम देवोऽसौ भगवानजितो हरिः ॥३-४५-२५॥
yo'sau bhūmigataḥ śrīmān viṣṇur madhuniṣūdanaḥ। kapilo nāma devo'sau bhagavān ajito hariḥ ॥3-45-25॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; भूमिगतः (bhūmigataḥ) - gone to the earth; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessing fortune; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; मधुनिषूदनः (madhuniṣūdanaḥ) - destroyer of Madhu; कपिलः (kapilaḥ) - Kapila; नाम (nāma) - by name; देवः (devaḥ) - god; असौ (asau) - that; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the glorious one; अजितः (ajitaḥ) - unconquered; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
(Who that has gone to the earth, the fortunate Viṣṇu, destroyer of Madhu; Kapila by name, that god, the glorious unconquered Hari.)
That one who has gone to the earth, the illustrious Viṣṇu, destroyer of Madhu, is the god named Kapila, the glorious, unconquered Hari. (3-45-25)
येन पूर्वं महात्मानः खनमाना रसातलम्। दर्शनादेव निहताः सगरस्यात्मजा विभो ॥३-४५-२६॥
yena pūrvaṃ mahātmānaḥ khanamānā rasātalam। darśanādeva nihatāḥ sagarasya ātmajā vibho ॥3-45-26॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - formerly; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; खनमाना (khanamānāḥ) - digging; रसातलम् (rasātalam) - netherworld; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from the sight; एव (eva) - indeed; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - were slain; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; आत्मजाः (ātmajāḥ) - sons; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(By whom formerly the great-souled ones, digging the netherworld, were slain indeed from the sight, the sons of Sagara, O lord.)
O lord, by whose mere sight the sons of Sagara, those great-souled ones who were digging into the netherworld, were formerly slain. (3-45-26)
तेन कार्यं महत्कार्यमस्माकं द्विजसत्तम। पार्थेन च महायुद्धे समेताभ्यामसंशयम् ॥३-४५-२७॥
tena kāryaṃ mahatkāryamasmākaṃ dvijasattama। pārthena ca mahāyuddhe sametābhyāmasaṃśayam ॥3-45-27॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; by that; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; action; महत्कार्यम् (mahatkāryam) - great deed; important task; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - our; of us; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born; O excellent Brāhmaṇa; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha; by Arjuna; च (ca) - and; महायुद्धे (mahāyuddhe) - in the great battle; समेताभ्याम् (sametābhyām) - by the two assembled; by the two joined; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; surely;]
(By him, a great deed to be done, our, O best of the twice-born; by Pārtha and in the great battle, by the two assembled, without doubt.)
O best of the twice-born, a great task of ours is to be accomplished by him; by Pārtha too, in the great battle, surely by the two assembled, there is no doubt. (3-45-27)
अयं तेषां समस्तानां शक्तः प्रतिसमासने। तान्निहत्य रणे शूरः पुनर्यास्यति मानुषान् ॥३-४५-२८॥
ayaṃ teṣāṃ samastānāṃ śaktaḥ pratisamāsane। tān nihatya raṇe śūraḥ punar yāsyati mānuṣān ॥3-45-28॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समस्तानाम् (samastānām) - of all; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; प्रतिसमासने (pratisamāsane) - in opposing; तान् (tān) - them; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; पुनः (punar) - again; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - to men;]
(This, of them, of all, capable, in opposing; them, having slain, in battle, hero, again, will go, to men.)
He, being capable of opposing all of them, having slain them in battle, the hero will again return to the men. (3-45-28)
भवांश्चास्मन्नियोगेन यातु तावन्महीतलम्। काम्यके द्रक्ष्यसे वीरं निवसन्तं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥३-४५-२९॥
bhavāṁś cāsmanniyogena yātu tāvan mahītalam। kāmyake drakṣyase vīraṁ nivasantaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥3-45-29॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); च (ca) - and; अस्मन् (asman) - our; नियोगेन (niyogena) - by command; यातु (yātu) - should go; तावत् (tāvat) - meanwhile; मही-तलम् (mahī-talam) - earth's surface; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka (forest); द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; निवसन्तम् (nivasantam) - dwelling; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(You and by our command should go meanwhile to the earth's surface; in Kāmyaka you will see the hero Yudhishthira dwelling.)
You, by our command, should go for now to the earth; in Kāmyaka you will see the hero Yudhishthira residing there. (3-45-29)
स वाच्यो मम संदेशाद्धर्मात्मा सत्यसङ्गरः। नोत्कण्ठा फल्गुने कार्या कृतास्त्रः शीघ्रमेष्यति ॥३-४५-३०॥
sa vācyo mama saṃdeśād dharmātmā satyasaṅgaraḥ। notkaṇṭhā phalgune kāryā kṛtāstraḥ śīghrameṣyati ॥3-45-30॥
[स (sa) - he; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be told; मम (mama) - my; संदेशात् (saṃdeśāt) - from message; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सत्यसङ्गरः (satyasaṅgaraḥ) - steadfast in truth; न (na) - not; उत्कण्ठा (utkaṇṭhā) - longing; फल्गुने (phalguṇe) - in Phalguna (month); कार्या (kāryā) - should be made; कृतास्त्रः (kṛtāstraḥ) - having accomplished weapons; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; एष्यति (eṣyati) - he will come;]
(He should be told from my message: the righteous-souled, steadfast in truth, should not have longing in Phalguna; having accomplished weapons, he will come quickly.)
He should be told my message: the righteous and truthful one should not be anxious in the month of Phalguna; having completed his preparations, he will return quickly. (3-45-30)
नाशुद्धबाहुवीर्येण नाकृतास्त्रेण वा रणे। भीष्मद्रोणादयो युद्धे शक्याः प्रतिसमासितुम् ॥३-४५-३१॥
nāśuddhabāhuvīryeṇa nākṛtāstreṇa vā raṇe। bhīṣmadroṇādayo yuddhe śakyāḥ pratisamāsitum ॥3-45-31॥
[न (na) - not; अशुद्ध (aśuddha) - impure; बाहु (bāhu) - arm; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by strength; न (na) - not; अकृत (akṛta) - not performed; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by weapon; वा (vā) - or; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; आदयः (ādayaḥ) - and others; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible; प्रतिसमासितुम् (pratisamāsitum) - to be opposed;]
(Not by impure arm strength, nor by unperformed weapon, or in battle, Bhishma, Drona and others in battle are possible to be opposed.)
Bhishma, Drona, and others cannot be opposed in battle either by impure strength of arms or by weapons not properly used. (3-45-31)
गृहीतास्त्रो गुडाकेशो महाबाहुर्महामनाः। नृत्तवादित्रगीतानां दिव्यानां पारमेयिवान् ॥३-४५-३२॥
gṛhītāstro guḍākeśo mahābāhur mahāmanāḥ। nṛttavāditragītānāṃ divyānāṃ pārameyivān ॥3-45-32॥
[गृहीतास्त्रः (gṛhītāstraḥ) - having taken up weapons; गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; नृत्तवादित्रगीतानाम् (nṛttavāditragītānām) - of dance, musical instruments, and songs; दिव्यानाम् (divyānām) - divine; पारमेयिवान् (pārameyivān) - having surpassed;]
(Having taken up weapons, Guḍākeśa, mighty-armed, great-minded, having surpassed the divine dance, musical instruments, and songs.)
Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), mighty-armed and great-minded, took up his weapons, surpassing the divine dance, music, and songs. (3-45-32)
भवानपि विविक्तानि तीर्थानि मनुजेश्वर। भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैर्द्रष्टुमर्हत्यरिंदम ॥३-४५-३३॥
bhavān api viviktāni tīrthāni manujeśvara। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvair draṣṭum arhati ariṃdama ॥3-45-33॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); अपि (api) - also; indeed; विविक्तानि (viviktāni) - secluded; distinguished; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - holy places; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O lord of men; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; together; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; with all; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; deserves; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes;]
(You also, O lord of men, accompanied by all your brothers, are worthy to see the secluded holy places, O subduer of foes.)
O lord of men, you too, accompanied by all your brothers, deserve to visit the secluded holy places, O subduer of foes. (3-45-33)
तीर्थेष्वाप्लुत्य पुण्येषु विपाप्मा विगतज्वरः। राज्यं भोक्ष्यसि राजेन्द्र सुखी विगतकल्मषः ॥३-४५-३४॥
tīrtheṣvāplutya puṇyeṣu vipāpmā vigatajvaraḥ। rājyaṃ bhokṣyasi rājendra sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ ॥3-45-34॥
[तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - in holy places; आप्लुत्य (āplutya) - having bathed; पुण्येषु (puṇyeṣu) - in meritorious (places); विपाप्मा (vipāpmā) - free from sin; विगतज्वरः (vigatajvaraḥ) - one whose fever is gone; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; भोक्ष्यसि (bhokṣyasi) - you will enjoy; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; विगतकल्मषः (vigatakalmaṣaḥ) - one whose impurity is gone;]
(Having bathed in holy and meritorious places, free from sin, with fever gone, you will enjoy the kingdom, O king, happy, with impurity gone.)
O king, after bathing in holy and meritorious places, freed from sin and all afflictions, you will happily enjoy your kingdom, your impurities having vanished. (3-45-34)
भवांश्चैनं द्विजश्रेष्ठ पर्यटन्तं महीतले। त्रातुमर्हति विप्राग्र्य तपोबलसमन्वितः ॥३-४५-३५॥
bhavāṁś cainaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha paryaṭantaṁ mahītale। trātum arhati viprāgrya tapobalasamanvitaḥ ॥3-45-35॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this (one); द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; पर्यटन्तम् (paryaṭantam) - wandering; महीतले (mahītale) - on the surface of the earth; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; विप्राग्र्य (viprāgrya) - O foremost among Brāhmaṇas; तपःबलसमन्वितः (tapo-bala-samanvitaḥ) - endowed with the power of penance;]
(You and this (one), O best of twice-born, wandering on the surface of the earth, to protect, is worthy, O foremost among Brāhmaṇas, endowed with the power of penance.)
You, O best of Brāhmaṇas, endowed with the power of penance, are indeed worthy to protect this one who wanders on the earth. (3-45-35)
गिरिदुर्गेषु हि सदा देशेषु विषमेषु च। वसन्ति राक्षसा रौद्रास्तेभ्यो रक्षेत्सदा भवान् ॥३-४५-३६॥
giridurgeṣu hi sadā deśeṣu viṣameṣu ca। vasanti rākṣasā raudrās tebhyo rakṣet sadā bhavān ॥3-45-36॥
[गिरिदुर्गेषु (giridurgeṣu) - in mountain-fortresses; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; देशेषु (deśeṣu) - in regions; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - in difficult (places); च (ca) - and; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; रौद्राः (raudrāḥ) - fierce; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; रक्षेत् (rakṣet) - should protect; सदा (sadā) - always; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself;]
(In mountain-fortresses indeed always in regions in difficult (places) and dwell rākṣasas fierce; from them should protect always yourself.)
Fierce rākṣasas always dwell in mountain-fortresses and difficult regions; you should always protect yourself from them. (3-45-36)
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय लोमशः सुमहातपाः। काम्यकं वनमुद्दिश्य समुपायान्महीतलम् ॥३-४५-३७॥
sa tatheti pratijñāya lomaśaḥ sumahātapāḥ। kāmyakaṃ vanam uddiśya samupāyān mahītalam ॥3-45-37॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; thus; प्रतिज्ञाय (pratijñāya) - having promised; लोमशः (lomaśaḥ) - Lomaśa; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kāmyaka; वनम् (vanam) - forest; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having directed towards; समुपायात् (samupāyāt) - approached; महीतलम् (mahītalam) - the surface of the earth;]
(He, thus having promised, Lomaśa, of great austerity, having directed towards the Kāmyaka forest, approached the surface of the earth.)
Having thus promised, the great ascetic Lomaśa set out for the Kāmyaka forest and arrived on the earth's surface. (3-45-37)
ददर्श तत्र कौन्तेयं धर्मराजमरिंदमम्। तापसैर्भ्रातृभिश्चैव सर्वतः परिवारितम् ॥३-४५-३८॥
dadarśa tatra kaunteyaṃ dharmarājam ariṃ-damam। tāpasaiḥ bhrātṛbhiś caiva sarvataḥ parivāritam ॥3-45-38॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - king of dharma; अरिंदमम् (ariṃ-damam) - subduer of enemies; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by ascetics; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; परिवारितम् (parivāritam) - surrounded;]
(He saw there the son of Kunti, the king of dharma, subduer of enemies, surrounded on all sides by ascetics and brothers indeed.)
