Pancharatra: How Yudhisthira sustained themselves along with thousands of Brahmanas in the forest.

यदिदं शोचितं राज्ञा धृतराष्ट्रेण वै मुने। प्रव्राज्य पाण्डवान्वीरान्सर्वमेतन्निरर्थकम् ॥३-४७-१॥
yad idaṃ śocitaṃ rājñā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa vai mune। pravrājya pāṇḍavān vīrān sarvam etan nirarthakam ॥3-47-1॥
[यत् (yat) - which; (relative pronoun); इदं (idaṃ) - this; शोचितं (śocitam) - lamented; grieved; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; धृतराष्ट्रेण (dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa) - by Dhritarashtra; वै (vai) - indeed; मुने (mune) - O sage; प्रव्राज्य (pravrājya) - having sent away; having exiled; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एतत् (etat) - this; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - meaningless; useless;]
(Which this lamented by the king Dhritarashtra indeed O sage, having exiled the Pāṇḍavas, the heroes, all this is meaningless.)
O sage, all this lamentation by King Dhritarashtra, having exiled the heroic Pāṇḍavas, is truly meaningless. (3-47-1)
कथं हि राजा पुत्रं स्वमुपेक्षेताल्पचेतसम्। दुर्योधनं पाण्डुपुत्रान्कोपयानं महारथान् ॥३-४७-२॥
kathaṁ hi rājā putraṁ svam upekṣetālpacetasaṁ। duryodhanaṁ pāṇḍuputrān kopyānaṁ mahārathān ॥3-47-2॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; पुत्रं (putraṁ) - son; स्वम् (svam) - his own; उपेक्षेत (upekṣeta) - would neglect; अल्पचेतसम् (alpacetasam) - of little intelligence; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanaṁ) - Duryodhana; पाण्डुपुत्रान् (pāṇḍuputrān) - the sons of Pandu; कोपयानम् (kopyānam) - provoking to anger; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors;]
(How indeed would a king neglect his own son of little intelligence, Duryodhana, provoking to anger the sons of Pandu, the great chariot-warriors?)
How could a king possibly neglect his own son, even if he is of little intelligence? By doing so to Duryodhana, he would provoke the mighty sons of Pandu, who are great chariot-warriors. (3-47-2)
किमासीत्पाण्डुपुत्राणां वने भोजनमुच्यताम्। वानेयमथ वा कृष्टमेतदाख्यातु मे भवान् ॥३-४७-३॥
kim āsīt pāṇḍu-putrāṇām vane bhojanam ucyatām। vāneyam atha vā kṛṣṭam etad ākhyātu me bhavān ॥3-47-3॥

(What was the food of the sons of Pāṇḍu in the forest? Let it be told. Is this of the forest or cultivated? Let you tell this to me.)
What food did the sons of Pāṇḍu have in the forest? Please tell me. Was it wild or cultivated? Please explain this to me. (3-47-3)

वानेयं च मृगांश्चैव शुद्धैर्बाणैर्निपातितान्। ब्राह्मणानां निवेद्याग्रमभुञ्जन्पुरुषर्षभाः ॥३-४७-४॥
vāna eyaṃ ca mṛgāṃś caiva śuddhair bāṇair nipātitān। brāhmaṇānāṃ nivedya agram abhuñjan puruṣarṣabhāḥ ॥3-47-4॥
[वानेयम् (vāna-iyam) - forest-game; this; च (ca) - and; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer; (wild) animals; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शुद्धैः (śuddhaiḥ) - pure; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - by arrows; निपातितान् (nipātitān) - felled; struck down; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having offered; अग्रम् (agram) - the best part; अभुञ्जन् (abhuñjan) - they ate; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; heroes;]
(Forest-game and this and deer and indeed, pure by arrows felled, of the brāhmaṇas having offered the best part, they ate, bulls among men.)
The heroes, having offered the best portion of the forest-game and deer, which had been felled by pure arrows, to the brāhmaṇas, ate (the remainder). (3-47-4)
तांस्तु शूरान्महेष्वासांस्तदा निवसतो वने। अन्वयुर्ब्राह्मणा राजन्साग्नयोऽनग्नयस्तथा ॥३-४७-५॥
tāṃs tu śūrān maheṣvāsāṃs tadā nivasato vane। anvayur brāhmaṇā rājan sāgnayo'gnayās tathā ॥3-47-5॥
[तांस् (tāṃs) - them; तु (tu) - but; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; महेष्वासान् (maheṣvāsān) - great bowmen; तदा (tadā) - then; निवसतः (nivasataḥ) - dwelling; वने (vane) - in the forest; अन्वयुः (anvayuḥ) - followed; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; राजन् (rājan) - O king; साग्नयः (sāgnayaḥ) - with fire; अनग्नयः (anagnayaḥ) - without fire; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Them but heroes great bowmen then dwelling in the forest followed Brāhmaṇas O king with fire without fire likewise.)
O king, Brāhmaṇas, both those with fire and those without, followed those heroic great bowmen as they dwelt in the forest. (3-47-5)
ब्राह्मणानां सहस्राणि स्नातकानां महात्मनाम्। दश मोक्षविदां तद्वद्यान्बिभर्ति युधिष्ठिरः ॥३-४७-६॥
brāhmaṇānāṃ sahasrāṇi snātakānāṃ mahātmanām। daśa mokṣavidāṃ tadvadyānbibharti yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥3-47-6॥
[ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; स्नातकानां (snātakānām) - of the initiated (graduates); महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; दश (daśa) - ten; मोक्षविदां (mokṣavidām) - of the knowers of liberation; तद्वत् (tadvat) - similarly; यान् (yān) - whom; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - supports; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Of the Brāhmaṇas thousands, of the initiated great-souled, ten of the knowers of liberation, similarly whom supports Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Yudhiṣṭhira supports thousands of Brāhmaṇas who are initiated and great-souled, and likewise ten who are knowers of liberation. (3-47-6)
रुरून्कृष्णमृगांश्चैव मेध्यांश्चान्यान्वनेचरान्। बाणैरुन्मथ्य विधिवद्ब्राह्मणेभ्यो न्यवेदयत् ॥३-४७-७॥
rurūn kṛṣṇamṛgāṁś caiva medhyāṁś cānyān vanecarān। bāṇair unmathya vidhivad brāhmaṇebhyo nyavedayat ॥3-47-7॥
[रुरून् (rurūn) - antelope (ruru deer); कृष्णमृगान् (kṛṣṇamṛgān) - black-buck deer; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मेध्यान् (medhyān) - fit for sacrifice; च (ca) - and; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; वनेचरान् (vanecarān) - forest-dwellers; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - with arrows; उन्मथ्य (unmathya) - having killed; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he offered;]
(Antelopes, black-buck deer and indeed those fit for sacrifice and other forest-dwellers, having killed with arrows, according to rule, to the Brāhmaṇas he offered.)
He killed antelopes, black-buck deer, and other forest-dwelling animals fit for sacrifice with arrows, and duly offered them to the Brāhmaṇas. (3-47-7)
न तत्र कश्चिद्दुर्वर्णो व्याधितो वाप्यदृश्यत। कृशो वा दुर्बलो वापि दीनो भीतोऽपि वा नरः ॥३-४७-८॥
na tatra kaścid durvarṇo vyādhito vā apy adṛśyata। kṛśo vā durbalo vā api dīno bhīto'pi vā naraḥ ॥3-47-8॥
[न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; दुर्वर्णः (durvarṇaḥ) - of bad color; व्याधितः (vyādhitaḥ) - diseased; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated; वा (vā) - or; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - weak; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - distressed; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Not there anyone of bad color, diseased or also was seen; emaciated or weak or also distressed, afraid also or man.)
There, no man of bad complexion, diseased, emaciated, weak, distressed, or afraid was seen. (3-47-8)
पुत्रानिव प्रियाञ्ज्ञातीन्भ्रातॄनिव सहोदरान्। पुपोष कौरवश्रेष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥३-४७-९॥
putrān iva priyān jñātīn bhrātṝn iva sahodarán। pupoṣa kauravaśreṣṭho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥3-47-9॥
[पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; इव (iva) - like; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; इव (iva) - like; सहोदरान् (sahodarán) - born of the same womb; पुपोष (pupoṣa) - nourished; कौरवश्रेष्ठः (kauravaśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the Kauravas; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Like sons, (he nourished) dear kinsmen; like brothers, (he nourished) those born of the same womb; the best of the Kauravas, the king of dharma, Yudhishthira, nourished (them).)
Yudhishthira, the king of dharma and the foremost among the Kauravas, cared for his dear kinsmen as if they were his own sons, and for his brothers as if they were born of the same mother. (3-47-9)
पतींश्च द्रौपदी सर्वान्द्विजांश्चैव यशस्विनी। मातेव भोजयित्वाग्रे शिष्टमाहारयत्तदा ॥३-४७-१०॥
patīṁś ca draupadī sarvān dvijāṁś caiva yaśasvinī। māteva bhojayitvā agre śiṣṭam āhārayat tadā ॥3-47-10॥
[पतीन् (patīn) - husbands; च (ca) - and; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; द्विजान् (dvijān) - twice-born; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious; माता (mātā) - mother; इव (iva) - like; भोजयित्वा (bhojayitvā) - having fed; अग्रे (agre) - first; शिष्टम् (śiṣṭam) - the remainder; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - she ate; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(And Draupadī, the illustrious, having fed her husbands and all the twice-born first, like a mother, then ate the remainder.)
Draupadī, the illustrious one, first served food to her husbands and all the twice-born, just like a mother would, and then she herself ate what was left. (3-47-10)
प्राचीं राजा दक्षिणां भीमसेनो; यमौ प्रतीचीमथ वाप्युदीचीम्। धनुर्धरा मांसहेतोर्मृगाणां; क्षयं चक्रुर्नित्यमेवोपगम्य ॥३-४७-११॥
prācīṃ rājā dakṣiṇāṃ bhīmaseno; yamau pratīcīmatha vāpyudīcīm. dhanurdharā māṃsahetormṛgāṇāṃ; kṣayaṃ cakrurnityamevopagamya ॥3-47-11॥
[प्राचीम् (prācīm) - eastern direction; राजा (rājā) - king; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern direction; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhimasena; यमौ (yamau) - the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva); प्रतीचीम् (pratīcīm) - western direction; अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northern direction; धनुर्धराः (dhanurdharāḥ) - archers; मांसहेतोः (māṃsahetoḥ) - for the sake of flesh; मृगाणाम् (mṛgāṇām) - of the deer; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached;]
(The king (went to) the east, Bhimasena (to) the south; the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva) (to) the west, then or also (to) the north. The archers, for the sake of flesh, of the deer, destruction they made, always indeed having approached.)
The king went east, Bhimasena to the south; the twins Nakula and Sahadeva to the west, and sometimes also to the north. The archers, always approaching, caused the destruction of the deer for the sake of flesh. (3-47-11)
तथा तेषां वसतां काम्यके वै; विहीनानामर्जुनेनोत्सुकानाम्। पञ्चैव वर्षाणि तदा व्यतीयु; रधीयतां जपतां जुह्वतां च ॥३-४७-१२॥
tathā teṣāṃ vasatāṃ kāmyake vai; vihīnānām arjunena utsukānām। pañcaiva varṣāṇi tadā vyatīyu; radhīyatāṃ japatāṃ juhvatāṃ ca ॥3-47-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; वसतां (vasatām) - dwelling; काम्यके (kāmyake) - in Kāmyaka; वै (vai) - indeed; विहीनानाम् (vihīnānām) - bereft; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; उत्सुकानाम् (utsukānām) - eager; पञ्च (pañca) - five; एव (eva) - only; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यतीयु (vyatīyu) - passed; रधीयताम् (radhīyatām) - of those studying; जपताम् (japatām) - of those reciting; जुह्वताम् (juhvatām) - of those offering oblations; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus, of them dwelling in Kāmyaka indeed, bereft by Arjuna, eager, five only years then passed, of those studying, of those reciting, and of those offering oblations.)
Thus, while they dwelt in Kāmyaka, deprived of Arjuna and longing for him, five years passed for those who studied, recited, and offered oblations. (3-47-12)
