Pancharatra: Conversation between Dhritarastra and Sanjaya on glories of Arjuna.

अत्यद्भुतमिदं कर्म पार्थस्यामिततेजसः। धृतराष्ट्रो महातेजाः श्रुत्वा विप्र किमब्रवीत् ॥३-४६-१॥
atyadbhutam idaṃ karma pārthasya amitatejasaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahātejāḥ śrutvā vipra kim abravīt ॥3-46-1॥

O brāhmaṇa, after hearing of this most wonderful deed of Pārtha, who possesses immeasurable energy, what did the great and powerful Dhṛtarāṣṭra say? (3-46-1)

शक्रलोकगतं पार्थं श्रुत्वा राजाम्बिकासुतः। द्वैपायनादृषिश्रेष्ठात्सञ्जयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३-४६-२॥
śakralokagataṃ pārthaṃ śrutvā rājāmbikāsutaḥ। dvaipāyanād ṛṣiśreṣṭhāt sañjayaṃ vākyam abravīt ॥3-46-2॥

(Having heard that Pārtha had gone to Indra's world, the king, son of Ambikā, from Dvaipāyana, from the best of sages, spoke words to Sañjaya.)
When the king, the son of Ambikā, heard from the sage Dvaipāyana that Pārtha had gone to Indra's world, he spoke to Sañjaya. (3-46-2)
श्रुतं मे सूत कार्त्स्न्येन कर्म पार्थस्य धीमतः। कच्चित्तवापि विदितं यथातथ्येन सारथे ॥३-४६-३॥
śrutaṃ me sūta kārtsnyena karma pārthasya dhīmataḥ। kaccittavāpi viditaṃ yathātathyena sārathe ॥3-46-3॥
[श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; मे (me) - by me; सूत (sūta) - O charioteer; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; कर्म (karma) - deed; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; त्व (tva) - by you; अपि (api) - also; विदितं (viditam) - known; यथातथ्येन (yathātathyena) - according to reality; सारथे (sārathe) - O charioteer;]
(Heard by me, O charioteer, in entirety, the deed of Pārtha, the wise; whether by you also it is known according to reality, O charioteer.)
O charioteer, I have heard in full the deeds of the wise Pārtha; do you also know them truly, O charioteer? (3-46-3)
प्रमत्तो ग्राम्यधर्मेषु मन्दात्मा पापनिश्चयः। मम पुत्रः सुदुर्बुद्धिः पृथिवीं घातयिष्यति ॥३-४६-४॥
pramatto grāmyadharmeṣu mandātmā pāpaniścayaḥ। mama putraḥ sudurbuddhiḥ pṛthivīṃ ghātayiṣyati ॥3-46-4॥
[प्रमत्तः (pramattaḥ) - negligent; ग्राम्यधर्मेषु (grāmyadharmeṣu) - in sensual practices; मन्दात्मा (mandātmā) - dull-minded; पापनिश्चयः (pāpaniścayaḥ) - resolved on evil; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सुदुर्बुद्धिः (sudurbuddhiḥ) - very wicked-minded; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; घातयिष्यति (ghātayiṣyati) - will destroy;]
(Negligent in sensual practices, dull-minded, resolved on evil, my son, very wicked-minded, the earth, will destroy.)
My son, who is negligent, dull-minded, resolved on evil, and of very wicked intellect, will destroy the earth. (3-46-4)
यस्य नित्यमृता वाचः स्वैरेष्वपि महात्मनः। त्रैलोक्यमपि तस्य स्याद्योद्धा यस्य धनञ्जयः ॥३-४६-५॥
yasya nityamṛtā vācaḥ svaireṣv api mahātmanaḥ। trailokyam api tasya syād yoddhā yasya dhanañjayaḥ ॥3-46-5॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नित्य (nitya) - always; अमृता (amṛtā) - immortal; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - among the independent; अपि (api) - even; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; योद्धा (yoddhā) - warrior; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Of whom always immortal words (are there), even among the independent, of the great-souled; even the three worlds would be his, of whom Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is the warrior.)
He whose words are always immortal, even among the independent great souls—if Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is his warrior, even the three worlds would be his. (3-46-5)
अस्यतः कर्णिनाराचांस्तीक्ष्णाग्रांश्च शिलाशितान्। कोऽर्जुनस्याग्रतस्तिष्ठेदपि मृत्युर्जरातिगः ॥३-४६-६॥
asyataḥ karṇinārācāṃstīkṣṇāgrāṃśca śilāśitān। ko'rjunasyaagratastiṣṭhedapi mṛtyurjarātigaḥ ॥3-46-6॥
[अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - shooting; कर्णिनाराचान् (karṇinārācān) - ear-tipped arrows; तीक्ष्णाग्रान् (tīkṣṇāgrān) - sharp-pointed; च (ca) - and; शिलाशितान् (śilāśitān) - stone-edged; कः (kaḥ) - who; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - would stand; अपि (api) - even; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; जरातिगः (jarātigaḥ) - one who has overcome old age;]
(Shooting ear-tipped arrows, sharp-pointed and stone-edged, who would stand in front of Arjuna? Even Death, who has overcome old age.)
Who could stand before Arjuna, as he shoots ear-tipped arrows with sharp and stone-edged points? Not even Death, the conqueror of old age, could do so. (3-46-6)
मम पुत्रा दुरात्मानः सर्वे मृत्युवशं गताः। येषां युद्धं दुराधर्षैः पाण्डवैः प्रत्युपस्थितम् ॥३-४६-७॥
mama putrā durātmānaḥ sarve mṛtyuvaśaṃ gatāḥ। yeṣāṃ yuddhaṃ durādharṣaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ pratyupasthitam ॥3-46-7॥
[मम (mama) - of me; my; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; दुरात्मानः (durātmānaḥ) - wicked-minded; evil-natured; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मृत्युवशं (mṛtyuvaśaṃ) - to the power of death; under the control of death; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; war; दुराधर्षैः (durādharṣaiḥ) - by the unassailable; by the difficult-to-conquer; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; प्रत्युपस्थितम् (pratyupasthitam) - has come upon; has approached;]
(My sons, wicked-minded, all have gone to the power of death. Of whom the battle by the unassailable Pāṇḍavas has come upon. (3-46-7))
All my sons, who were wicked-minded, have fallen under the sway of death, as the battle with the unassailable Pāṇḍavas has come upon them. (3-46-7)
तस्यैव च न पश्यामि युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः। अनिशं चिन्तयानोऽपि य एनमुदियाद्रथी ॥३-४६-८॥
tasyaiva ca na paśyāmi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ। aniśaṃ cintayāno'pi ya enam udiyād rathī ॥3-46-8॥
[तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of him only; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; गाण्डीवधन्वनः (gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ) - of the wielder of the Gandiva bow; अनिशं (aniśam) - constantly; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; अपि (api) - even; यः (yaḥ) - who; एनम् (enam) - him; उदियात् (udiyāt) - could surpass; रथी (rathī) - chariot-warrior;]
(Of him only and not I see in battle of the wielder of the Gandiva bow; constantly thinking even who him could surpass chariot-warrior.)
And of him alone, I do not see in battle, among the wielders of the Gandiva bow, anyone who, even after constant thought, could surpass him as a chariot-warrior. (3-46-8)
द्रोणकर्णौ प्रतीयातां यदि भीष्मोऽपि वा रणे। महान्स्यात्संशयो लोके न तु पश्यामि नो जयम् ॥३-४६-९॥
droṇakarṇau pratīyātāṃ yadi bhīṣmo'pi vā raṇe. mahān syāt saṃśayo loke na tu paśyāmi no jayam ॥3-46-9॥
[द्रोणकर्णौ (droṇakarṇau) - Droṇa and Karṇa; प्रतीयातां (pratīyātāṃ) - may go forth; यदि (yadi) - if; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; महान् (mahān) - great; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नः (naḥ) - our; जयम् (jayam) - victory;]
(Droṇa and Karṇa may go forth; if Bhīṣma also or in battle; great may be doubt in the world; not but I see our victory.)
Let Droṇa and Karṇa go forth; even if Bhīṣma himself enters the battle, there may be great doubt in the world, but I do not see our victory. (3-46-9)
घृणी कर्णः प्रमादी च आचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः। अमर्षी बलवान्पार्थः संरम्भी दृढविक्रमः ॥३-४६-१०॥
ghṛṇī karṇaḥ pramādī ca ācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ। amarṣī balavān pārthaḥ saṁrambhī dṛḍhavikramaḥ ॥3-46-10॥
[घृणी (ghṛṇī) - one who has compassion; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; प्रमादी (pramādī) - negligent one; च (ca) - and; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - teacher; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - elder; गुरुः (guruḥ) - preceptor; अमर्षी (amarṣī) - intolerant one; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; संरम्भी (saṁrambhī) - impetuous one; दृढविक्रमः (dṛḍhavikramaḥ) - firm in prowess;]
(Compassionate Karṇa, negligent one and teacher, elder, preceptor; intolerant one, strong Pārtha, impetuous one, firm in prowess. (3-46-10))
Karṇa is compassionate, negligent, and a teacher; he is an elder and preceptor. Pārtha is intolerant, strong, impetuous, and firm in his prowess. (3-46-10)
भवेत्सुतुमुलं युद्धं सर्वशोऽप्यपराजितम्। सर्वे ह्यस्त्रविदः शूराः सर्वे प्राप्ता महद्यशः ॥३-४६-११॥
bhavetsutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ sarvaśo'pyaparājitam। sarve hyastravidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve prāptā mahadyaśaḥ ॥3-46-11॥
[भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; (optative of √bhū, to be); सुतुमुलं (sutumulaṃ) - very tumultuous; (su- intensifier + tumula, tumultuous); युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; (from √yudh, to fight); सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; in every way; (from sarva, all); अपि (api) - even; also; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - undefeated; (a- not + parājita, conquered); सर्वे (sarve) - all; (plural of sarva, all); हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अस्त्रविदः (astravidaḥ) - knowers of weapons; (astra, weapon + vid, to know); शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; brave ones; (from śūra, hero); सर्वे (sarve) - all; (plural of sarva, all); प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have attained; (pra- forth + āpta, obtained); महत् (mahat) - great; (from mah, to be great); यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; glory;]
(May there be a very tumultuous battle, entirely even undefeated. All indeed knowers of weapons, heroes, all have attained great fame.)

अपि सर्वेश्वरत्वं हि न वाञ्छेरन्पराजिताः। वधे नूनं भवेच्छान्तिस्तेषां वा फल्गुनस्य वा ॥३-४६-१२॥
api sarveśvaratvaṃ hi na vāñcheranparājitāḥ। vadhe nūnaṃ bhavecchāntisteṣāṃ vā phalgunasya vā ॥3-46-12॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; सर्वेश्वरत्वं (sarveśvaratvam) - supremacy over all; हि (hi) - for; न (na) - not; वाञ्छेरन् (vāñcheran) - would desire; पराजिताः (parājitāḥ) - the defeated; वधे (vadhe) - in killing; नूनं (nūnam) - certainly; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; तेषां (teṣām) - for them; वा (vā) - or; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna (Arjuna); वा (vā) - or;]
(Indeed, supremacy over all, for, not, would desire, the defeated; in killing, certainly, would be, peace, for them, or, of Phalguna, or.)
Indeed, the defeated would not desire supremacy over all; in killing, certainly, there would be peace for them or for Phalguna. (3-46-12)
न तु हन्तार्जुनस्यास्ति जेता वास्य न विद्यते। मन्युस्तस्य कथं शाम्येन्मन्दान्प्रति समुत्थितः ॥३-४६-१३॥
na tu hantārjunas yāsti jetā vā'sya na vidyate। manyus tasya kathaṃ śāmyen mandān prati samutthitaḥ ॥3-46-13॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; हन्ता (hantā) - slayer; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; अस्ति (asti) - there is; जेता (jetā) - conqueror; वा (vā) - or; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; शाम्येत् (śāmyet) - would subside; मन्दान् (mandān) - the dull ones; प्रति (prati) - towards; समुत्थितः (samutthitaḥ) - arisen;]
(But not is there a slayer of Arjuna, or a conqueror of him is not found. His anger, how would it subside, arisen towards the dull ones?)
But there is no one who can slay Arjuna, nor is there anyone who can conquer him. How could his anger, which has arisen towards the dull-witted, be calmed? (3-46-13)
त्रिदशेशसमो वीरः खाण्डवेऽग्निमतर्पयत्। जिगाय पार्थिवान्सर्वान्राजसूये महाक्रतौ ॥३-४६-१४॥
tridaśeśasamo vīraḥ khāṇḍave'gnimatarpayat। jigāya pārthivānsarvān rājasūye mahākratau ॥3-46-14॥
[त्रिदशेशसमः (tridaśeśasamaḥ) - equal to the lord of the thirty (gods); वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava (forest); अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; अतर्पयत् (atarpayat) - satisfied; जिगाय (jigāya) - conquered; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; राजसूये (rājasūye) - at the Rājasūya (sacrifice); महाक्रतौ (mahākratau) - great sacrifice;]
(Equal to the lord of the thirty (gods), the hero in Khāṇḍava satisfied fire. He conquered all kings at the Rājasūya great sacrifice.)
The hero, who was equal to the lord of the gods, satisfied Agni in the Khāṇḍava forest and conquered all the kings at the great Rājasūya sacrifice. (3-46-14)
शेषं कुर्याद्गिरेर्वज्रं निपतन्मूर्ध्नि सञ्जय। न तु कुर्युः शराः शेषमस्तास्तात किरीटिना ॥३-४६-१५॥
śeṣaṃ kuryād girer vajraṃ nipatan mūrdhni sañjaya। na tu kuryuḥ śarāḥ śeṣam astā tāt kirīṭinā ॥3-46-15॥
[शेषम् (śeṣam) - remainder; residue; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; should make; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt; निपतन् (nipatan) - falling; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - O Sañjaya; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - should do; should make; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remainder; residue; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; तात (tāta) - O dear one; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by the one with a crown; by Arjuna;]
(The remainder should be done by the thunderbolt of the mountain falling on the head, O Sañjaya; but not should the arrows do the remainder, let it be, O dear one, by the one with a crown.)
O Sañjaya, let the remainder be accomplished by the thunderbolt falling from the mountain onto the head, but not by the arrows of the crowned one, O dear one. (3-46-15)
यथा हि किरणा भानोस्तपन्तीह चराचरम्। तथा पार्थभुजोत्सृष्टाः शरास्तप्स्यन्ति मे सुतान् ॥३-४६-१६॥
yathā hi kiraṇā bhānos tapantīha carācaram। tathā pārthabhujotsṛṣṭāḥ śarāstapsyanti me sutān ॥3-46-16॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; किरणाः (kiraṇāḥ) - rays; भानः (bhānaḥ) - of the sun; तपन्ति (tapanti) - burn; इह (iha) - here; चराचरम् (carācaram) - the moving and unmoving; तथा (tathā) - so; पार्थभुजोत्सृष्टाः (pārthabhujotsṛṣṭāḥ) - released from the arm of Partha; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; तप्स्यन्ति (tapsyanti) - will burn; मे (me) - my; सुतान् (sutān) - sons;]
(Just as indeed the rays of the sun burn here the moving and unmoving, so the arrows released from the arm of Partha will burn my sons.)
Just as the rays of the sun burn everything, both moving and unmoving, so too will the arrows released from Arjuna's arm scorch my sons. (3-46-16)
अपि वा रथघोषेण भयार्ता सव्यसाचिनः। प्रतिभाति विदीर्णेव सर्वतो भारती चमूः ॥३-४६-१७॥
api vā rathaghoṣeṇa bhayārtā savyasācinaḥ। pratibhāti vidīrṇeva sarvato bhāratī camūḥ ॥3-46-17॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; also; वा (vā) - or; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) - by the sound of chariots; भयार्ता (bhayārtā) - afflicted by fear; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Savyasācin (Arjuna); प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; विदीर्णेव (vidīrṇeva) - as if torn apart; सर्वतो (sarvato) - on all sides; भारती (bhāratī) - of the Bhāratas; चमूः (camūḥ) - army;]
(Indeed or by the sound of chariots, afflicted by fear of Savyasācin, appears as if torn apart on all sides the army of the Bhāratas.)
Indeed, by the sound of the chariots, the army of the Bhāratas, afflicted by fear of Savyasācin (Arjuna), appears as if torn apart on all sides. (3-46-17)
यदुद्वपन्प्रवपंश्चैव बाणा; न्स्थाताततायी समरे किरीटी। सृष्टोऽन्तकः सर्वहरो विधात्रा; भवेद्यथा तद्वदपारणीयः ॥३-४६-१८॥
yad udvapan pravapaṃś caiva bāṇān sthātā tatāyī samare kirīṭī। sṛṣṭo'ntakaḥ sarvaharo vidhātrā; bhaved yathā tadvad apāraṇīyaḥ ॥3-46-18॥
[यत् (yat) - as; उद्वपन् (udvapan) - raising; प्रवपन् (pravapan) - shooting; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बाणान् (bāṇān) - arrows; स्थाता (sthātā) - one who stands; ततायी (tatāyī) - aggressor; समरे (samare) - in battle; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a crown; सृष्टः (sṛṣṭaḥ) - created; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - destroyer; सर्वहरः (sarvaharaḥ) - all-destroyer; विधात्रा (vidhātrā) - by the creator; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; यथा (yathā) - as; तद्वत् (tadvat) - so; अपारणीयः (apāraṇīyaḥ) - not to be overcome;]
(As raising and shooting indeed arrows, one who stands, aggressor, in battle, the crowned one, created destroyer, all-destroyer, by the creator, would be as so not to be overcome.)
Just as, raising and shooting arrows, the crowned aggressor who stands in battle, created as a destroyer and all-destroyer by the creator, would be not to be overcome, so is he. (3-46-18)

(Which this spoken O king by you regarding Duryodhana, all this as you have said you, not this false O lord of the earth.)
O king, all that you have spoken regarding Duryodhana is just as you have said; this is not false, O lord of the earth. (3-46-19)
मन्युना हि समाविष्टाः पाण्डवास्तेऽमितौजसः। दृष्ट्वा कृष्णां सभां नीतां धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ॥३-४६-२०॥
manyunā hi samāviṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavās te'mitaujasaḥ। dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇāṃ sabhāṃ nītāṃ dharmapatnīṃ yaśasvinīm ॥3-46-20॥

(By anger indeed overcome the Pāṇḍavas they of immeasurable energy, having seen Kṛṣṇā assembly led lawful wife illustrious.)
The Pāṇḍavas, possessed of immeasurable energy, were indeed overcome by anger when they saw their illustrious lawful wife Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) led into the assembly. (3-46-20)
दुःशासनस्य ता वाचः श्रुत्वा ते दारुणोदयाः। कर्णस्य च महाराज न स्वप्स्यन्तीति मे मतिः ॥३-४६-२१॥
duḥśāsanasya tā vācaḥ śrutvā te dāruṇodayāḥ। karṇasya ca mahārāja na svapsyantīti me matiḥ ॥3-46-21॥

O great king, having heard those words of Duḥśāsana, they, aroused to cruelty, and Karṇa, I think, will not sleep. (3-46-21)
श्रुतं हि ते महाराज यथा पार्थेन संयुगे। एकादशतनुः स्थाणुर्धनुषा परितोषितः ॥३-४६-२२॥
śrutaṃ hi te mahārāja yathā pārthena saṃyuge। ekādaśatanuḥ sthāṇur dhanuṣā paritoṣitaḥ ॥3-46-22॥
[श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - by you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; यथा (yathā) - as; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; एकादशतनुः (ekādaśatanuḥ) - having eleven forms; स्थाणुः (sthāṇuḥ) - Sthāṇu (Śiva); धनुषा (dhanuṣā) - with the bow; परितोषितः (paritoṣitaḥ) - was satisfied;]
(Heard indeed by you, O great king, as by Pārtha in battle, the eleven-formed Sthāṇu (Śiva) was satisfied with the bow.)
O great king, you have indeed heard how, in battle, Sthāṇu (Śiva) with eleven forms was satisfied by Pārtha (Arjuna) with his bow. (3-46-22)
कैरातं वेषमास्थाय योधयामास फल्गुनम्। जिज्ञासुः सर्वदेवेशः कपर्दी भगवान्स्वयम् ॥३-४६-२३॥
kairātaṃ veṣam āsthāya yodhayām āsa phalgunam। jijñāsuḥ sarvadeveśaḥ kapardī bhagavān svayam॥3-46-23॥

तत्रैनं लोकपालास्ते दर्शयामासुरर्जुनम्। अस्त्रहेतोः पराक्रान्तं तपसा कौरवर्षभम् ॥३-४६-२४॥
tatraiṇaṃ lokapālāste darśayāmāsurarjunam। astrahetoḥ parākrāntaṃ tapasā kauravarṣabham ॥3-46-24॥

There, the guardians of the worlds showed Arjuna, the bull among the Kurus, who had excelled in austerity for the sake of weapons. (3-46-24)
नैतदुत्सहतेऽन्यो हि लब्धुमन्यत्र फल्गुनात्। साक्षाद्दर्शनमेतेषामीश्वराणां नरो भुवि ॥३-४६-२५॥
naitadutsahate'nyo hi labdhumanyatra phalgunāt. sākṣāddarśanameteṣāmīśvarāṇāṃ naro bhuvi ॥3-46-25॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; हि (hi) - indeed; लब्धुम् (labdhum) - to obtain; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - except; फल्गुनात् (phalgunāt) - from Phalguna (Arjuna); साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; एतेषाम् (eteṣām) - of these; ईश्वराणाम् (īśvarāṇām) - of the lords; नरः (naraḥ) - man; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Not this is able another indeed to obtain except from Phalguna; directly sight of these lords man on earth.)
No one else except Phalguna (Arjuna) is able to obtain this; on earth, a man cannot directly see these lords. (3-46-25)
महेश्वरेण यो राजन्न जीर्णो ग्रस्तमूर्तिमान्। कस्तमुत्सहते वीरं युद्धे जरयितुं पुमान् ॥३-४६-२६॥
maheśvareṇa yo rājann jīrṇo grastamūrtimān। kastamutsahate vīraṃ yuddhe jarayituṃ pumān॥3-46-26॥

O king, who is the man that can defeat in battle that hero, who, though worn out and having a consumed form, was empowered by Maheśvara? (3-46-26)
आसादितमिदं घोरं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्। द्रौपदीं परिकर्षद्भिः कोपयद्भिश्च पाण्डवान् ॥३-४६-२७॥
āsāditam idaṃ ghoraṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। draupadīṃ parikarṣadbhiḥ kopayadbhiś ca pāṇḍavān ॥3-46-27॥
[आसादितम् (āsāditam) - attained; reached; इदं (idaṃ) - this; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; dreadful; तुमुलम् (tumulam) - tumultuous; noisy; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; causing hair to stand; द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī; परिकर्षद्भिः (parikarṣadbhiḥ) - by those dragging; by those pulling around; कोपयद्भिः (kopayadbhiḥ) - by those enraging; by those angering; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(This terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising (event) has been attained, Draupadī by those dragging (her), and by those angering the Pāṇḍavas.)
This dreadful, tumultuous, and hair-raising event has occurred: Draupadī is being dragged about, provoking the anger of the Pāṇḍavas. (3-46-27)
यत्र विस्फुरमाणोष्ठो भीमः प्राह वचो महत्। दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनेनोरू द्रौपद्या दर्शितावुभौ ॥३-४६-२८॥
yatra visphuramāṇoṣṭho bhīmaḥ prāha vaco mahat। dṛṣṭvā duryodhanenorū draupadyā darśitāvubhau ॥3-46-28॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; विस्फुरमाण-ओष्ठः (visphuramāṇa-oṣṭhaḥ) - with quivering lip; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; महत् (mahat) - great; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दुर्योधनेन (duryodhanena) - by Duryodhana; ऊरू (ūrū) - thighs; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - to Draupadi; दर्शितौ (darśitau) - shown; उभौ (ubhau) - both;]

ऊरू भेत्स्यामि ते पाप गदया वज्रकल्पया। त्रयोदशानां वर्षाणामन्ते दुर्द्यूतदेविनः ॥३-४६-२९॥
ūrū bhetsyāmi te pāpa gadayā vajrakalpayā। trayodaśānāṃ varṣāṇām ante durdyūtadevinaḥ ॥3-46-29॥
[ऊरू (ūrū) - thighs; भेत्स्यामि (bhetsyāmi) - I will break; ते (te) - your; पाप (pāpa) - wicked; गदया (gadayā) - with the mace; वज्रकल्पया (vajrakalpayā) - like a thunderbolt; त्रयोदशानां (trayodaśānāṃ) - of thirteen; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - years; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; दुर्द्यूतदेविनः (durdyūtadevinaḥ) - O evil gambler;]
(Thighs I will break your wicked with the mace like a thunderbolt; of thirteen years at the end O evil gambler; (3-46-29))
O wicked one, at the end of thirteen years, I will break your thighs with a mace as strong as a thunderbolt, O evil gambler. (3-46-29)
सर्वे प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठाः सर्वे चामिततेजसः। सर्वे सर्वास्त्रविद्वांसो देवैरपि सुदुर्जयाः ॥३-४६-३०॥
sarve praharatāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ sarve cāmitatejasaḥ। sarve sarvāstravidvāṃso devairapi sudurjayāḥ ॥3-46-30॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रहरतां (praharatām) - of the strikers; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - the best; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वास्त्रविद्वांसः (sarvāstravidvāṃsaḥ) - knowers of all weapons; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; सुदुर्जयाः (sudurjayāḥ) - very difficult to conquer;]
(All of the strikers are the best; all and of immeasurable energy; all knowers of all weapons; even by the gods very difficult to conquer;)
All of them are the best among warriors, all possess immeasurable energy, all are skilled in every weapon, and even the gods find them very difficult to conquer. (3-46-30)
मnye मन्युसमुद्धूताः पुत्राणां तव संयुगे। अन्तं पार्थाः करिष्यन्ति वीर्यामर्षसमन्विताः ॥३-४६-३१॥
manye manyusamuddhūtāḥ putrāṇāṃ tava saṃyuge. antaṃ pārthāḥ kariṣyanti vīryāmarṣasamanvitāḥ ॥3-46-31॥
[मnye (manye) - I think; मन्युसमुद्धूताः (manyusamuddhūtāḥ) - stirred up by anger; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of the sons; तव (tava) - your; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; अन्तं (antaṃ) - end; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pritha (the Pandavas); करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will bring about; वीर्यामर्षसमन्विताः (vīryāmarṣasamanvitāḥ) - endowed with heroism and wrath;]

(What done, O charioteer, by Karṇa, speaking harsh speech? Sufficient enmity this much, that Kṛṣṇā she assembly went.)
O charioteer, what has Karṇa done by speaking harsh words? This much enmity is sufficient, that Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) went into the assembly. (3-46-32)
अपीदानीं मम सुतास्तिष्ठेरन्मन्दचेतसः। येषां भ्राता गुरुर्ज्येष्ठो विनये नावतिष्ठते ॥३-४६-३३॥
apīdānīṃ mama sutās tiṣṭheran manda-cetasaḥ। yeṣāṃ bhrātā gurur jyeṣṭho vinaye nāvatiṣṭhate ॥3-46-33॥
[अपीदानीं (apīdānīṃ) - now indeed; मम (mama) - my; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तिष्ठेरन् (tiṣṭheran) - might remain; मन्दचेतसः (manda-cetasaḥ) - dull-minded; येषां (yeṣāṃ) - of whom; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; गुरुः (guruḥ) - elder; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; विनये (vinaye) - in discipline; नावतिष्ठते (na avatiṣṭhate) - does not abide;]

ममापि वचनं सूत न शुश्रूषति मन्दभाक्। दृष्ट्वा मां चक्षुषा हीनं निर्विचेष्टमचेतनम् ॥३-४६-३४॥
mamāpi vacanaṃ sūta na śuśrūṣati mandabhāk। dṛṣṭvā māṃ cakṣuṣā hīnaṃ nirviceṣṭam acetanam ॥3-46-34॥
[मम (mama) - of me; अपि (api) - also; वचनं (vacanam) - word; सूत (sūta) - O charioteer; न (na) - not; शुश्रूषति (śuśrūṣati) - heeds; मन्दभाक् (mandabhāk) - unfortunate one; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मां (mām) - me; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with the eye; हीनं (hīnam) - deprived; निर्विचेष्टम् (nirviceṣṭam) - motionless; अचेतनम् (acetanam) - unconscious;]

O charioteer, the unfortunate one does not heed my words either; seeing me deprived of sight, motionless and unconscious. (3-46-34)
ये चास्य सचिवा मन्दाः कर्णसौबलकादयः। तेऽप्यस्य भूयसो दोषान्वर्धयन्ति विचेतसः ॥३-४६-३५॥
ye cāsya sacivā mandāḥ karṇasaubalakādayaḥ। te'pyasya bhūyaso doṣānvardhayanti vicetasaḥ ॥3-46-35॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural); च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; सचिवाः (sacivāḥ) - ministers; मन्दाः (mandāḥ) - dull; slow-witted; कर्णसौबलकादयः (karṇasaubalakādayaḥ) - Karna, Saubala and others; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - his; भूयसः (bhūyasaḥ) - more; greater; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; defects; वर्धयन्ति (vardhayanti) - increase; augment; विचेतसः (vicetasaḥ) - unwise; lacking discernment;]
(Who and his ministers dull Karna, Saubala and others, they also his greater faults increase unwise.)
And those dull ministers of his, such as Karna, Saubala and others, they too, being unwise, further increase his many faults. (3-46-35)
स्वैरमुक्ता अपि शराः पार्थेनामिततेजसा। निर्दहेयुर्मम सुतान्किं पुनर्मन्युनेरिताः ॥३-४६-३६॥
svairamuktā api śarāḥ pārthenāmitatejasā। nirdaheyur mama sutān kiṃ punar manyuneritāḥ ॥3-46-36॥
[स्वैरमुक्ताः (svairamuktāḥ) - released freely; अपि (api) - even; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Pārtha (Arjuna); अमिततेजसा (amitatejasā) - of immeasurable energy; निर्दहेयुः (nirdaheyuḥ) - would burn; मम (mama) - my; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; किं (kiṃ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मन्युना (manyunā) - by wrath; इरिताः (iritāḥ) - impelled;]
(Even arrows released freely by Pārtha of immeasurable energy would burn my sons; what again (to say) of those impelled by wrath.)

pārthabāhubalotsṛṣṭā mahācāpaviniḥsṛtāḥ। divyāstramantramuditāḥ sādayeyuḥ surānapi ॥3-46-37॥

(Released by the strength of Pārtha's arm, emerged from the great bow, divine weapons with mantras uttered could destroy even the gods.)

यस्य मन्त्री च गोप्ता च सुहृच्चैव जनार्दनः। हरिस्त्रैलोक्यनाथः स किं नु तस्य न निर्जितम् ॥३-४६-३८॥
yasya mantrī ca goptā ca suhṛc caiva janārdanaḥ। haris trailokyanāthaḥ sa kiṃ nu tasya na nirjitam ॥3-46-38॥

(Of whom Janardana, Hari, lord of the three worlds, is the counselor and protector and friend indeed, what indeed of him is not conquered?)
For one whose counselor, protector, and true friend is Janardana—Hari, the lord of the three worlds—what indeed can remain unconquered for him? (3-46-38)
इदं च सुमहच्चित्रमर्जुनस्येह सञ्जय। महादेवेन बाहुभ्यां यत्समेत इति श्रुतिः ॥३-४६-३९॥

(This and very great wonderful of Arjuna here, O Sañjaya; by Mahadeva by the arms which joined thus tradition.)
O Sañjaya, here is this very great and wonderful thing of Arjuna; it is said in tradition that it was joined by the arms of Mahadeva. (3-46-39)
प्रत्यक्षं सर्वलोकस्य खाण्डवे यत्कृतं पुरा। फल्गुनेन सहायार्थे वह्नेर्दामोदरेण च ॥३-४६-४०॥
pratyakṣaṃ sarvalokasya khāṇḍave yat kṛtaṃ purā। phalgunena sahāyārthe vahnēr dāmodareṇa ca ॥3-46-40॥

(That which was done formerly in Khāṇḍava, directly before all worlds, by Phalguna for the purpose of assisting Agni, and by Dāmodara.)
What was done long ago in the Khāṇḍava forest, openly before all beings, by Phalguna (Arjuna) to help Agni, and by Dāmodara (Krishna), (3-46-40)
सर्वथा नास्ति मे पुत्रः सामात्यः सहबान्धवः। क्रुद्धे पार्थे च भीमे च वासुदेवे च सात्वते ॥३-४६-४१॥
sarvathā nāsti me putraḥ sāmātyaḥ sahabāndhavaḥ। kruddhe pārthe ca bhīme ca vāsudeve ca sātvate ॥3-46-41॥
