अतिष्ठन्मनुजेन्द्राणां मूर्ध्नि देवपतिर्यथा। उपर्युपरि सर्वेषामादित्य इव तेजसा ॥३-५०-२॥

तथैवासीद्विदर्भेषु भीमो भीमपराक्रमः। शूरः सर्वगुणैर्युक्तः प्रजाकामः स चाप्रजः ॥३-५०-५॥
tathaivāsīd vidarbheṣu bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ। śūraḥ sarvaguṇair yuktaḥ prajākāmaḥ sa cāprajaḥ ॥3-50-5॥

स प्रजार्थे परं यत्नमकरोत्सुसमाहितः। तमभ्यगच्छद्ब्रह्मर्षिर्दमनो नाम भारत ॥३-५०-६॥
sa prajā-arthe paraṃ yatnam akarot susamāhitaḥ। tam abhyagacchad brahmarṣir damano nāma bhārata ॥3-50-6॥

तं स भीमः प्रजाकामस्तोषयामास धर्मवित्। महिष्या सह राजेन्द्र सत्कारेण सुवर्चसम् ॥३-५०-७॥
taṃ sa bhīmaḥ prajākāmaḥ toṣayām āsa dharmavit। mahiṣyā saha rājendra satkāreṇa suvarcasam ॥3-50-7॥

तस्मै प्रसन्नो दमनः सभार्याय वरं ददौ। कन्यारत्नं कुमारांश्च त्रीनुदारान्महायशाः ॥३-५०-८॥
tasmai prasanno damanaḥ sabhāryāya varaṃ dadau. kanyāratnaṃ kumārāṃś ca trīn udārān mahāyaśāḥ ॥3-50-8॥

Pleased, Damana granted a boon to him and his wife: a jewel-like daughter and three noble, illustrious sons. (3-50-8)
दमयन्तीं दमं दान्तं दमनं च सुवर्चसम्। उपपन्नान्गुणैः सर्वैर्भीमान्भीमपराक्रमान् ॥३-५०-९॥
damayantīṃ damaṃ dāntaṃ damanaṃ ca suvarcasam। upapannānguṇaiḥ sarvairbhīmānbhīmaparākrāmān ॥3-50-9॥
[दमयन्तीं (damayantīṃ) - Damayantī; (the princess) दमं (damaṃ) - self-restraint; दान्तं (dāntaṃ) - controlled; subdued; दमनं (damanaṃ) - subduing; conquering; च (ca) - and; सुवर्चसम् (suvarcasam) - of good radiance; उपपन्नान् (upapannān) - endowed with; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; भीमान् (bhīmān) - terrible; mighty; भीमपराक्रमान् (bhīmaparākrāmān) - of terrible valor;]
(Damayantī, self-restraint, controlled, subduing and of good radiance, endowed with all qualities, mighty, of terrible valor.)
Damayantī, possessing self-restraint, control, the power to subdue, and great radiance, endowed with all virtues, mighty and of formidable valor. (3-50-9)
दमयन्ती तु रूपेण तेजसा यशसा श्रिया। सौभाग्येन च लोकेषु यशः प्राप सुमध्यमा ॥३-५०-१०॥
damayantī tu rūpeṇa tejasā yaśasā śriyā। saubhāgyena ca lokeṣu yaśaḥ prāpa sumadhyamā ॥3-50-10॥

(Damayantī but by beauty, by brilliance, by fame, by prosperity, by good fortune and in the worlds, fame attained, the slender-waisted one.)
But Damayantī, by her beauty, brilliance, fame, prosperity, and good fortune, attained fame among people as the graceful one. (3-50-10)
अथ तां वयसि प्राप्ते दासीनां समलङ्कृतम्। शतं सखीनां च तथा पर्युपास्ते शचीमिव ॥३-५०-११॥
atha tāṃ vayasi prāpte dāsīnām samalaṅkṛtam। śataṃ sakhīnāṃ ca tathā paryupāste śacīm iva ॥3-50-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; वयसि (vayasi) - in age; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having attained; दासीनाम् (dāsīnām) - of maidservants; समलङ्कृतम् (samalaṅkṛtam) - well-adorned; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; सखीनाम् (sakhīnāṃ) - of companions; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पर्युपास्ते (paryupāste) - attends upon; शचीम् (śacīm) - Śacī (Indra's wife); इव (iva) - like;]
(Then, when she had attained age, a hundred well-adorned maidservants and likewise companions attend upon her like Śacī.)

तत्र स्म भ्राजते भैमी सर्वाभरणभूषिता। सखीमध्येऽनवद्याङ्गी विद्युत्सौदामिनी यथा ॥ अतीव रूपसम्पन्ना श्रीरिवायतलोचना ॥३-५०-१२॥
tatra sma bhrājate bhaimī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā। sakhī-madhye'navadyāṅgī vidyut-saudāminī yathā॥ atīva rūpasampannā śrīr-ivāyata-locanā॥3-50-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; स्म (sma) - indeed; भ्राजते (bhrājate) - shines; भैमी (bhaimī) - daughter of Bhīma; सर्वाभरणभूषिता (sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā) - adorned with all ornaments; सखीमध्ये (sakhī-madhye) - among companions; अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - faultless-limbed; विद्युत्सौदामिनी (vidyut-saudāminī) - lightning-flash; यथा (yathā) - like; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; रूपसम्पन्ना (rūpasampannā) - endowed with beauty; श्रीरिव (śrīr-iva) - like Śrī (Lakṣmī); आयतलोचना (āyata-locanā) - large-eyed;]
(There indeed shines the daughter of Bhīma, adorned with all ornaments; among companions, faultless-limbed, like a lightning-flash; exceedingly endowed with beauty, like Śrī, large-eyed.)
There, the daughter of Bhīma, adorned with all ornaments, shone among her companions, her limbs flawless, like a flash of lightning; she was exceedingly beautiful, with large eyes like the goddess Śrī (Lakṣmī). (3-50-12)
न देवेषु न यक्षेषु तादृग्रूपवती क्वचित्। मानुषेष्वपि चान्येषु दृष्टपूर्वा न च श्रुता ॥ चित्तप्रमाथिनी बाला देवानामपि सुन्दरी ॥३-५०-१३॥
na deveṣu na yakṣeṣu tādṛgrūpavatī kvacit। mānuṣeṣvapi cānyeṣu dṛṣṭapūrvā na ca śrutā ॥ cittapramāthinī bālā devānāmapi sundarī ॥3-50-13॥
[न (na) - not; देवेषु (deveṣu) - among gods; न (na) - not; यक्षेषु (yakṣeṣu) - among yakṣas; तादृग्रूपवती (tādṛgrūpavatī) - such form-possessing (of such beauty); क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among humans; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; अन्येषु (anyeṣu) - among others; दृष्टपूर्वा (dṛṣṭapūrvā) - seen before; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; श्रुता (śrutā) - heard; चित्तप्रमाथिनी (cittapramāthinī) - mind-agitating; बाला (bālā) - young woman; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अपि (api) - even; सुन्दरी (sundarī) - beautiful woman;]
(Not among gods, not among yakṣas, such a form-possessing (woman) anywhere; among humans even and among others, seen before not and heard; mind-agitating young woman, even among the gods, beautiful woman.)
Such a beautiful young woman, who agitates the mind, has not been seen or heard of anywhere among the gods, yakṣas, humans, or others; even among the gods, she is a beauty. (3-50-13)
नलश्च नरशार्दूलो रूपेणाप्रतिमो भुवि। कन्दर्प इव रूपेण मूर्तिमानभवत्स्वयम् ॥३-५०-१४॥
nalaś ca naraśārdūlo rūpeṇāpratimo bhuvi। kandarpa iva rūpeṇa mūrtimān abhavat svayam ॥3-50-14॥
[नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; च (ca) - and; नरशार्दूलः (naraśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among men; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - incomparable; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; कन्दर्पः (kandarpaḥ) - Kandarpa (Cupid); इव (iva) - like; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by beauty; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - embodied; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Nala and the tiger among men, by beauty incomparable on earth; Kandarpa (Cupid) like, by beauty, embodied became himself.)
Nala, the tiger among men, was unmatched in beauty on earth; he himself became the very embodiment of Kandarpa (Cupid) in form. (3-50-14)
तस्याः समीपे तु नलं प्रशशंसुः कुतूहलात्। नैषधस्य समीपे तु दमयन्तीं पुनः पुनः ॥३-५०-१५॥
tasyāḥ samīpe tu nalaṃ praśaśaṃsuḥ kutūhalāt। naiṣadhasya samīpe tu damayantīṃ punaḥ punaḥ ॥3-50-15॥

तयोरदृष्टकामोऽभूच्छृण्वतोः सततं गुणान्। अन्योन्यं प्रति कौन्तेय स व्यवर्धत हृच्छयः ॥३-५०-१६॥
tayor adṛṣṭakāmo'bhūc chṛṇvatoḥ satataṃ guṇān। anyonyaṃ prati kaunteya sa vyavardhata hṛcchayaḥ ॥3-50-16॥

(Of those two, desire for the unseen arose while constantly hearing qualities towards each other, O son of Kunti; that heart-desire grew.)

अशक्नुवन्नलः कामं तदा धारयितुं हृदा। अन्तःपुरसमीपस्थे वन आस्ते रहोगतः ॥३-५०-१७॥
aśaknuvannalaḥ kāmaṃ tadā dhārayituṃ hṛdā। antaḥpurasamīpasthe vana āste rahogataḥ ॥3-50-17॥

Unable to restrain his desire, the fire (of passion) then, by his heart, being near the inner apartments, he remains in the forest, having gone into solitude. (3-50-17)
स ददर्श तदा हंसाञ्जातरूपपरिच्छदान्। वने विचरतां तेषामेकं जग्राह पक्षिणम् ॥३-५०-१८॥
sa dadarśa tadā haṃsāñjātarūpaparicchadān। vane vicaratāṃ teṣāmekam jagrāha pakṣiṇam ॥3-50-18॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then; हंसान् (haṃsān) - swans; जातरूप (jātarūpa) - gold; परिच्छदान् (paricchadān) - adorned (with); वने (vane) - in the forest; विचरताम् (vicaratām) - wandering; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एकम् (ekam) - one; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; पक्षिणम् (pakṣiṇam) - bird;]

ततोऽन्तरिक्षगो वाचं व्याजहार तदा नलम्। न हन्तव्योऽस्मि ते राजन्करिष्यामि हि ते प्रियम् ॥३-५०-१९॥
tato'ntarikṣago vācaṃ vyājahāra tadā nalam। na hantavyo'smi te rājan kariṣyāmi hi te priyam ॥3-50-19॥

(Then the one who moves in the sky uttered speech to Nala at that time: "I am not to be killed by you, O king; I will indeed do what is dear for you." (3-50-19))
Then, the celestial being spoke to Nala at that moment: "O king, I am not to be killed by you; indeed, I will do what is dear to you." (3-50-19)
दमयन्तीसकाशे त्वां कथयिष्यामि नैषध। यथा त्वदन्यं पुरुषं न सा मंस्यति कर्हिचित् ॥३-५०-२०॥
damayantī-sakāśe tvāṃ kathayiṣyāmi naiṣadha। yathā tvad-anyaṃ puruṣaṃ na sā maṃsyati karhicit ॥3-50-20॥

(In the presence of Damayantī, I will tell you, O Naiṣadha, so that she will not consider any other man than you at any time.)
O Naiṣadha, I will speak of you in Damayantī's presence in such a way that she will never consider any man other than you. (3-50-20)
एवमुक्तस्ततो हंसमुत्ससर्ज महीपतिः। ते तु हंसाः समुत्पत्य विदर्भानगमंस्ततः ॥३-५०-२१॥
evam-uktas-tato haṁsam-utsasarja mahīpatiḥ। te tu haṁsāḥ samutpatya vidarbhān-agamaṁs-tataḥ ॥3-50-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; हंसम् (haṁsam) - the swan; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - released; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; हंसाः (haṁsāḥ) - the swans; समुत्पत्य (samutpatya) - having risen up; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to the Vidarbhas; अगमन् (agaman) - went; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(Thus having been spoken, then the king released the swan. They but the swans, having risen up, went to the Vidarbhas from there.)
Thus addressed, the king released the swan. The swans then rose up and went from there to the land of the Vidarbhas. (3-50-21)
विदर्भनगरीं गत्वा दमयन्त्यास्तदान्तिके। निपेतुस्ते गरुत्मन्तः सा ददर्शाथ तान्खगान् ॥३-५०-२२॥
vidarbhanagarīṃ gatvā damayantyās tadāntike। nipetus te garutmantaḥ sā dadarśa atha tān khagān ॥3-50-22॥
[विदर्भनगरीं (vidarbhanagarīṃ) - to the city of Vidarbha; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; दमयन्त्याः (damayantyāḥ) - of Damayantī; तद् (tad) - that; अन्तिके (antike) - near; निपेतुः (nipetuḥ) - alighted; ते (te) - they; गरुत्मन्तः (garutmantaḥ) - the Garuḍa-like (divine birds); सा (sā) - she; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; अथ (atha) - then; तान् (tān) - those; खगान् (khagān) - birds;]
(Having gone to the city of Vidarbha, near Damayantī, they, the Garuḍa-like (divine birds), alighted; she then saw those birds.)
After reaching the city of Vidarbha, near Damayantī, those Garuḍa-like birds alighted; then she saw those birds. (3-50-22)
सा तानद्भुतरूपान्वै दृष्ट्वा सखिगणावृता। हृष्टा ग्रहीतुं खगमांस्त्वरमाणोपचक्रमे ॥३-५०-२३॥
sā tān adbhutarūpān vai dṛṣṭvā sakhigaṇāvṛtā। hṛṣṭā grahītuṃ khagamāṃs tvaramāṇopacakrame ॥3-50-23॥
[सा (sā) - she; तान् (tān) - those; अद्भुतरूपान् (adbhutarūpān) - wonderful-formed; (of) marvelous appearance; वै (vai) - indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सखिगणावृता (sakhigaṇāvṛtā) - surrounded by a group of friends; हृष्टा (hṛṣṭā) - delighted; ग्रहीतुं (grahītuṃ) - to seize; खगमांस् (khagamāṃs) - bird-meats; त्वरमाण (tvaramāṇa) - hastening; उपचक्रमे (upacakrame) - she began;]
(She, those wonderful-formed (ones) indeed having seen, surrounded by a group of friends, delighted, to seize bird-meats, hastening, she began.)
Seeing those of marvelous appearance, she, surrounded by her group of friends and delighted, hastily began to seize the bird-meats. (3-50-23)
अथ हंसा विससृपुः सर्वतः प्रमदावने। एकैकशस्ततः कन्यास्तान्हंसान्समुपाद्रवन् ॥३-५०-२४॥
atha haṃsā visasṛpuḥ sarvataḥ pramadāvane। ekaikaśas tataḥ kanyās tān haṃsān samupādravan ॥3-50-24॥
[अथ (atha) - then; हंसा (haṃsā) - swans; विससृपुः (visasṛpuḥ) - spread out; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - in all directions; प्रमदावने (pramadāvane) - in the pleasure-garden; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - one by one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; तान् (tān) - those; हंसान् (haṃsān) - swans; समुपाद्रवन् (samupādravan) - approached together;]
(Then the swans spread out in all directions in the pleasure-garden; one by one, then, the maidens approached those swans together.)
Then the swans dispersed in all directions throughout the pleasure-garden; after that, the maidens, one by one, approached those swans. (3-50-24)
दमयन्ती तु यं हंसं समुपाधावदन्तिके। स मानुषीं गिरं कृत्वा दमयन्तीमथाब्रवीत् ॥३-५०-२५॥
damayantī tu yaṃ haṃsaṃ samupādhāvadantike। sa mānuṣīṃ giraṃ kṛtvā damayantīmathābravīt ॥3-50-25॥

(Damayantī but whom swan approached near. He, having made human speech, then spoke to Damayantī.)
But Damayantī approached the swan closely. He then, having assumed human speech, spoke to Damayantī. (3-50-25)
दमयन्ति नलो नाम निषधेषु महीपतिः। अश्विनोः सदृशो रूपे न समास्तस्य मानुषाः ॥३-५०-२६॥
damayanti nalo nāma niṣadheṣu mahīpatiḥ। aśvinoḥ sadṛśo rūpe na samās tasya mānuṣāḥ ॥3-50-26॥
[दमयन्ति (damayanti) - Damayanti; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नाम (nāma) - named; निषधेषु (niṣadheṣu) - among the Niṣadhas; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - similar; रूपे (rūpe) - in form; न (na) - not; समाः (samāḥ) - equal; तस्य (tasya) - to him; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - men;]
(Damayanti, Nala named, among the Niṣadhas, king; of the Aśvins, similar, in form; not, equal, to him, men.)
There was a king among the Niṣadhas named Nala, beloved of Damayanti; in form he was like the Aśvins, and no men were equal to him. (3-50-26)
तस्य वै यदि भार्या त्वं भवेथा वरवर्णिनि। सफलं ते भवेज्जन्म रूपं चेदं सुमध्यमे ॥३-५०-२७॥
tasya vai yadi bhāryā tvaṃ bhavethā varavarṇini। saphalaṃ te bhavejjanma rūpaṃ cedaṃ sumadhyame ॥3-50-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वै (vai) - indeed; यदि (yadi) - if; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भवेथा (bhavethā) - would become; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O one of excellent complexion; सफलं (saphalaṃ) - fruitful; ते (te) - your; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; जन्म (janma) - birth; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O slender-waisted one;]
(Of him indeed if wife you would become, O one of excellent complexion; fruitful your would be birth, form and this, O slender-waisted one.)
O one of excellent complexion, if you were to become his wife, O slender-waisted one, then your birth and this form would indeed be fruitful. (3-50-27)
वयं हि देवगन्धर्वमनुष्योरगराक्षसान्। दृष्टवन्तो न चास्माभिर्दृष्टपूर्वस्तथाविधः ॥३-५०-२८॥
vayaṃ hi deva-gandharva-manuṣya-uraga-rākṣasān। dṛṣṭavanto na ca asmābhiḥ dṛṣṭapūrvas tathāvidhaḥ ॥3-50-28॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; देव (deva) - god; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - gandharva; मनुष्य (manuṣya) - human; उरग (uraga) - serpent; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas; दृष्टवन्तः (dṛṣṭavantaḥ) - have seen; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - seen before; तथाविधः (tathāvidhaḥ) - such as this;]
(We indeed gods gandharvas humans serpents rākṣasas have seen; not and by us seen before such as this.)
We have indeed seen gods, gandharvas, humans, serpents, and rākṣasas; but never before have we seen anyone such as this. (3-50-28)
त्वं चापि रत्नं नारीणां नरेषु च नलो वरः। विशिष्टाया विशिष्टेन सङ्गमो गुणवान्भवेत् ॥३-५०-२९॥
tvaṃ cāpi ratnaṃ nārīṇāṃ nareṣu ca nalo varaḥ। viśiṣṭāyā viśiṣṭena saṅgamo guṇavānbhavet ॥3-50-29॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; रत्नं (ratnaṃ) - jewel; नारीणां (nārīṇāṃ) - of women; नरेषु (nareṣu) - among men; च (ca) - and; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; वरः (varaḥ) - excellent; विशिष्टाया (viśiṣṭāyā) - of the distinguished (woman); विशिष्टेन (viśiṣṭena) - with the distinguished (man); सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - union; गुणवान् (guṇavān) - endowed with virtues; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(You and also jewel of women; among men and Nala excellent; of the distinguished (woman) with the distinguished (man) union endowed with virtues should be.)
You are the jewel among women, and Nala is the best among men; the union of the distinguished woman with the distinguished man should be virtuous. (3-50-29)
एवमुक्ता तु हंसेन दमयन्ती विशां पते। अब्रवीत्तत्र तं हंसं तमप्येवं नलं वद ॥३-५०-३०॥
evamuktā tu haṃsena damayantī viśāṃ pate। abravīttatra taṃ haṃsaṃ tamapyevaṃ nalaṃ vada ॥3-50-30॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; हंसेन (haṃsena) - by the swan; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तत्र (tatra) - there; तम् (tam) - to him; हंसम् (haṃsam) - swan; तम् (tam) - him; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; वद (vada) - speak;]
(Thus addressed by the swan, Damayanti, O lord of men, said there to that swan: "Also thus speak to Nala." (3-50-30))
Thus, when addressed by the swan, Damayanti, O lord of men, said to the swan there: "Speak thus also to Nala." (3-50-30)
तथेत्युक्त्वाण्डजः कन्यां वैदर्भस्य विशां पते। पुनरागम्य निषधान्नले सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥३-५०-३१॥
tathety uktvāṇḍajaḥ kanyāṃ vaidarbhasya viśāṃ pate। punar āgamya niṣadhān nale sarvaṃ nyavedayat ॥3-50-31॥
[तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having thus spoken; अण्डजः (aṇḍajaḥ) - the egg-born (bird); कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - the maiden; वैदर्भस्य (vaidarbhasya) - of the king of Vidarbha; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; निषधान् (niṣadhān) - to Niṣadha; नले (nale) - to Nala; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - everything; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he reported;]
(Having thus spoken, the egg-born (bird) the maiden of the king of Vidarbha, O lord of the peoples, again having come to Niṣadha, to Nala, everything he reported.)
Having said this, the egg-born bird, taking the maiden of the king of Vidarbha, O lord of the people, returned again to Niṣadha and reported everything to Nala. (3-50-31)
