Bṛhadaśva said.
ततस्तु याते वार्ष्णेये पुण्यश्लोकस्य दीव्यतः। पुष्करेण हृतं राज्यं यच्चान्यद्वसु किञ्चन ॥०३-५८-१॥
tatastu yāte vārṣṇeye puṇyaślokasya dīvyataḥ। puṣkareṇa hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ yaccānyadvasu kiñcana ॥03-58-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; याते (yāte) - having departed; वार्ष्णेये (vārṣṇeye) - son of Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa); पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of the virtuous-famed one; दीव्यतः (dīvyataḥ) - while sporting; पुष्करेण (puṣkareṇa) - by Puṣkara; हृतं (hṛtam) - was taken; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; वसु (vasu) - wealth; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - any;]
(Then but, with the Vārṣṇeya (son of Vṛṣṇi, Kṛṣṇa) having departed, when the virtuous-famed one was sporting, by Puṣkara the kingdom was taken and whatever other wealth [also].)
But then, after the Vārṣṇeya had departed, as the virtuous-famed one was sporting, Puṣkara took away his kingdom and whatever other wealth there was. (03-58-1)
हृतराज्यं नलं राजन्प्रहसन्पुष्करोऽब्रवीत्। द्यूतं प्रवर्ततां भूयः प्रतिपाणोऽस्ति कस्तव ॥०३-५८-२॥
hṛtarājyaṃ nalaṃ rājan prahasan puṣkaro'bravīt। dyūtaṃ pravartatāṃ bhūyaḥ pratipāṇo'sti kas tava॥03-58-2॥
[हृतराज्यं (hṛta-rājyaṃ) - kingdom taken away; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; द्यूतं (dyūtaṃ) - the dice game; प्रवर्ततां (pravartatām) - let proceed; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रतिपाणः (pratipāṇaḥ) - a stake; अस्ति (asti) - is; कः (kaḥ) - who; तव (tava) - your;]
(Kingdom taken away Nala O King, smiling Puṣkara said; Let the dice game proceed again, what stake is there of yours? (03-58-2))
Having won away the kingdom from Nala, O King, the smiling Puṣkara said: 'Let the dice game proceed again. What stake do you have?' (03-58-2)
शिष्टा ते दमयन्त्येका सर्वमन्यद्धृतं मया। दमयन्त्याः पणः साधु वर्ततां यदि मन्यसे ॥३-५८-३॥
śiṣṭā te damayanty-ekā sarvam anyad dhṛtaṃ mayā। damayantyāḥ paṇaḥ sādhu vartatāṃ yadi manyase॥3-58-3॥
[शिष्टा (śiṣṭā) - remains; has been left; has been spared; ते (te) - for you; दमयन्त्य् - एका (damayanty-ekā) - Damayantī alone; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all (others); अन्यत् (anyat) - the rest; other; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - has been taken; has been accepted; मया (mayā) - by me; दमयन्त्याः (damayantyāḥ) - Damayantī's; पणः (paṇaḥ) - wager; stake; साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; वर्तताम् (vartatām) - may be; may proceed; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; you consider;]
(Remains for you Damayantī alone, all the rest has been taken by me. Damayantī's wager may properly proceed, if you think (so).)
Only Damayantī remains for you, all the others have been taken by me. Let Damayantī's wager proceed, if you think it proper. (3-58-3)
पुष्करेणैवमुक्तस्य पुण्यश्लोकस्य मन्युना। व्यदीर्यतेव हृदयं न चैनं किञ्चिदब्रवीत् ॥०३-५८-४॥
puṣkareṇaivam uktasya puṇyaślokasya manyunā। vyadīryateva hṛdayaṁ na cainaṁ kiñcid abravīt ॥03-58-4॥
[पुष्करेण (puṣkareṇa) - by Puṣkara; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तस्य (uktasya) - having been spoken; पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of Puṇyaśloka; मन्युना (manyunā) - by anger; व्यदीर्यते (vyadīryate) - is torn; इव (iva) - as if; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(By Puṣkara, thus having been spoken to, the heart of Puṇyaśloka as if by anger is torn, and he did not say anything to him.)
When thus addressed by Puṣkara, the heart of Puṇyaśloka felt as if torn apart by anger, yet he did not say anything to him. (03-58-4)
ततः पुष्करमालोक्य नलः परममन्युमान्। उत्सृज्य सर्वगात्रेभ्यो भूषणानि महायशाः ॥०३-५८-५॥
tataḥ puṣkaram ālokya nalaḥ paramam anyumān। utsṛjya sarva-gātrebhyaḥ bhūṣaṇāni mahā-yaśāḥ ॥03-58-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara; आलोक्य (ālokkya) - having seen; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; परमं (paramam) - supreme; अन्युमान् (anyumān) - having anger; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having discarded; सर्व (sarva) - all; गात्रेभ्यः (gātrebhyaḥ) - from the limbs; भूषणानि (bhūṣaṇāni) - ornaments; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - the greatly renowned;]
(Then, having seen Puṣkara, Nala, having supreme anger, having discarded all ornaments from the limbs, the greatly renowned.)
Then, having seen Puṣkara, the greatly renowned Nala, full of intense anger, discarded all ornaments from his limbs. (03-58-5)
एकवासा असंवीतः सुहृच्छोकविवर्धनः। निश्चक्राम तदा राजा त्यक्त्वा सुविपुलां श्रियम् ॥०३-५८-६॥
ekavāsā asaṁvitaḥ suhṛcchokavivardhanaḥ। niścakrāma tadā rājā tyaktvā suvipulāṁ śriyam ॥03-58-6॥
[एकवासा (ekavāsā) - wearing one garment; असंवीतः (asaṁvitaḥ) - uncovered (without other clothing); सुहृच्छोकविवर्धनः (suhṛcchokavivardhanaḥ) - one who increases the grief of friends; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - departed; तदा (tadā) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; सुविपुलां (suvipulāṁ) - very great; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity;]
(Wearing one garment, uncovered, the increaser of the grief of friends, then the king departed, having abandoned very great prosperity.)
Wearing only one garment, and uncovered, thus increasing the grief of his friends, the king then departed, having abandoned his vast prosperity. (03-58-6)
दमयन्त्येकवस्त्रा तं गच्छन्तं पृष्ठतोऽन्वियात्। स तया बाह्यतः सार्धं त्रिरात्रं नैषधोऽवसत् ॥०३-५८-७॥
damayanty-ekavastrā taṃ gacchantam pṛṣṭhato'nviyāt। sa tayā bāhyataḥ sārdhaṃ trirātraṃ naiṣadho'vasat ॥03-58-7॥
[दमयन्त्येकवस्त्रा (damayanty-ekavastrā) - Damayantī (the name, feminine); in a single garment; तं (taṃ) - him; गच्छन्तं (gacchantam) - going; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वियात् (anviyāt) - she followed; स (sa) - he; तया (tayā) - with her; बाह्यतः (bāhyataḥ) - outside; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; त्रिरात्रं (trirātram) - for three nights; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Naiṣadha (Nala, the king of Niṣadha); अवसत् (avasat) - dwelt/stayed;]
(Damayantī, in a single garment, him going from behind, she followed. He with her outside together for three nights Naiṣadha stayed.)
Damayantī, dressed in a single garment, followed him as he was going, from behind. Together with her, Naiṣadha (Nala) stayed outside for three nights. (03-58-7)
पुष्करस्तु महाराज घोषयामास वै पुरे। नले यः सम्यगातिष्ठेत्स गच्छेद्वध्यतां मम ॥०३-५८-८॥
puṣkaras tu mahārāja ghoṣayām āsa vai pure। nale yaḥ samyag ātiṣṭhet sa gacched vadhyatāṃ mama॥03-58-8॥
[पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; (a proper noun); तु (tu) - but; however; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; (vocative); घोषयाम् आस (ghoṣayām āsa) - ordered to announce; (causative of ghuṣ, to proclaim); वै (vai) - indeed; verily; पुरे (pure) - in the city; नले (nale) - to Nala; (locative case); यः (yaḥ) - who; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; rightly; आतिष्ठेत् (ātiṣṭhet) - stands by; supports; सः (saḥ) - he; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - to the state of being killed; to execution; मम (mama) - of me; my;]
(But Puṣkara, O great king, ordered to announce indeed in the city: To Nala, whoever properly supports, he should go to the state of execution of me.)
But, O great king, Puṣkara had it proclaimed throughout the city: Whoever supports Nala shall be put to death by my order. (03-58-8)
पुष्करस्य तु वाक्येन तस्य विद्वेषणेन च। पौरा न तस्मिन्सत्कारं कृतवन्तो युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-५८-९॥
puṣkarasya tu vākyena tasya vidveṣaṇena ca| paurā na tasminsatkāraṃ kṛtavanto yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-58-9॥
[पुष्करस्य (puṣkarasya) - of Puṣkara; तु (tu) - but; वाक्येन (vākyena) - by the speech; तस्य (tasya) - by his; विद्वेषणेन (vidveṣaṇena) - by enmity; by act of causing aversion; च (ca) - and; पौरा (paurā) - the townspeople; न (na) - not; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; सत्कारं (satkāraṃ) - respect; honor; कृतवन्तः (kṛtavantaḥ) - did perform; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(O Yudhiṣṭhira, but by Puṣkara's speech and by his act of enmity, the townspeople did not show respect to him.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, however, because of Puṣkara's words and hostile acts, the townspeople did not show him any respect. (03-58-9)
स तथा नगराभ्याशे सत्कारार्हो न सत्कृतः। त्रिरात्रमुषितो राजा जलमात्रेण वर्तयन् ॥०३-५८-१०॥
sa tathā nagarābhyāśe satkārārho na satkṛtaḥ। trirātram-uṣito rājā jalamātreṇa vartayan ॥03-58-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; नगराभ्याशे (nagarābhyāśe) - near the city; सत्कारार्हः (satkārārhaḥ) - worthy of honor; न (na) - not; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; त्रिरात्रम् (trirātram) - for three nights; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - dwelt; राजा (rājā) - the king; जलमात्रेण (jalamātreṇa) - with only water; वर्तयन् (vartayan) - subsisting;]
(He thus near the city, though worthy of honor, not honored; for three nights dwelt the king, with only water subsisting.)
Thus, near the city, the king, though worthy of honor, was not honored. For three nights he remained there, subsisting only on water. (03-58-10)
क्षुधा सम्पीड्यमानस्तु नलो बहुतिथेऽहनि। अपश्यच्छकुनान्कांश्चिद्धिरण्यसदृशच्छदान् ॥०३-५८-११॥
kṣudhā sampīḍyamānas tu nalo bahutithe'ahani। apaśyac chakunān kāṃścid dhiraṇyasadṛśacchadān ॥03-58-11॥
[क्षुधा (kṣudhā) (kṣudhā) - by hunger; सम्पीड्यमानः (sampīḍyamānaḥ) (sampīḍyamānaḥ) - being afflicted; तु (tu) (tu) - but; नलः (nalaḥ) (nalaḥ) - Nala; बहुतिथे (bahutithe) (bahutithe) - on a many-tithied; अहनि (ahani) (ahani) - day; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) (apaśyat) - he saw; शकुनान् (śakunān) (śakunān) - birds; कांश्चित् (kāṃścit) (kāṃścit) - some; धिरण्यसदृशच्छदान् (dhiraṇyasadṛśacchadān) (dhiraṇyasadṛśacchadān) - with coverings resembling gold;]
(But Nala, being afflicted by hunger, on a day with many tithis, saw some birds with coverings resembling gold.)
But Nala, afflicted by hunger, on a day having many tithis, saw some birds with plumage like gold. (03-58-11)
स चिन्तयामास तदा निषधाधिपतिर्बली। अस्ति भक्षो ममाद्यायं वसु चेदं भविष्यति ॥०३-५८-१२॥
sa cintayāmāsa tadā niṣadhādhipatir balī. asti bhakṣo mama adyāyaṁ vasu ca idaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥03-58-12॥
[स (sa) - he; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; तदा (tadā) - then; निषधाधिपतिः (niṣadhādhipatiḥ) - king of Niṣadha; बली (balī) - the powerful; अस्ति (asti) - is; भक्षः (bhakṣaḥ) - food; मम (mama) - for me; अद्य (adya) - today; अयं (ayaṁ) - this; वसु (vasu) - wealth; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṁ) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(He thought then, king of Niṣadha, powerful. There is food for me today, this wealth also this will be.)
Then the powerful king of Niṣadha thought, "Today there is food for me; this wealth too will be mine." (03-58-12)
ततस्तानन्तरीयेण वाससा समवास्तृणोत्। तस्यान्तरीयमादाय जग्मुः सर्वे विहायसा ॥०३-५८-१३॥
tatas tān antarīyeṇa vāsasā samavāstṛṇot। tasya antarīyam ādāya jagmuḥ sarve vihāyasā ॥03-58-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - them; अन्तरीयेण (antarīyeṇa) - with the undergarment; वाससा (vāsasā) - with garment; समवास्तृणोत् (samavāstṛṇot) - he completely covered; तस्य (tasya) - his; अन्तरीयम् (antarīyam) - undergarment; आदाय (ādāya) - taking; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विहायसा (vihāyasā) - through the sky;]
(Then them with the undergarment with garment he completely covered. His undergarment taking, they went all through the sky.)
Then he fully covered them with his undergarment. Taking his undergarment, all of them departed through the sky. (03-58-13)
उपतन्तः खगास्ते तु वाक्यमाहुस्तदा नलम्। दृष्ट्वा दिग्वाससं भूमौ स्थितं दीनमधोमुखम् ॥०३-५८-१४॥
upatantaḥ khagās te tu vākyam āhus tadā nalam। dṛṣṭvā dig-vāsasam bhūmau sthitam dīnam adho-mukham॥03-58-14॥
[उपतन्तः (upatantaḥ) - approaching; (they) came near; खगाः (khagāḥ) - birds; (the) birds; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; speech; आहुः (āhuḥ) - said; spoke; तदा (tadā) - then; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; (to) Nala; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; दिग्वाससम् (dig-vāsasam) - clad in sky (wearing only directions); naked; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; दीनम् (dīnam) - dejected; अधोमुखम् (adho-mukham) - with downcast face;]
(Approaching, the birds then said words to Nala, having seen (him) naked, on the ground, standing, dejected, with downcast face.)
The birds came near and then spoke to Nala, seeing him standing on the ground, dejected, naked, and with his face cast down. (03-58-14)
वयमक्षाः सुदुर्बुद्धे तव वासो जिहीर्षवः। आगता न हि नः प्रीतिः सवाससि गते त्वयि ॥०३-५८-१५॥
vayam akṣāḥ sudurbuddhe tava vāso jihīrṣavaḥ। āgatā na hi naḥ prītiḥ savāsasi gate tvayi॥03-58-15॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; अक्षाः (akṣāḥ) - gamblers; सुदुर्बुद्धे (sudurbuddhe) - O very unintelligent one; तव (tava) - your; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; जिहीर्षवः (jihīrṣavaḥ) - wishing to seize; आगता (āgatā) - has come; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; सवाससि (savāsasi) - with the dweller; गते (gate) - having gone; त्वयि (tvayi) - when you;]
(we gamblers O very unintelligent one your dwelling wishing to seize has come not indeed our affection with the dweller having gone when you)
O very unintelligent one, we gamblers came wishing to take over your dwelling, but our affection does not remain when the dweller (you) is gone. (03-58-15)
तान्समीक्ष्य गतानक्षानात्मानं च विवाससम्। पुण्यश्लोकस्ततो राजा दमयन्तीमथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-५८-१६॥
tān samīkṣya gatān akṣān ātmānam ca vivāsasam। puṇyaślokas tato rājā damayantīm athābravīt॥03-58-16॥
[तान् (tān) - them; (those) समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having observed; (having examined;) गतानक्षान् (gatān akṣān) - departed dice; (dice which have gone; i.e., used up;) आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; च (ca) - and; विवाससम् (vivāsasam) - without garment; (clad in just one garment;) पुण्यश्लोकः (puṇyaślokaḥ) - the virtuous (renowned) one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - to Damayantī; अथ (atha) - thereupon; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Them having observed, dice gone, himself and without garment, the virtuous one then king to Damayantī thereupon spoke.)
Having examined them—the played-out dice, and himself deprived of his garment—the virtuous king then addressed Damayantī. (03-58-16)
येषां प्रकोपादैश्वर्यात्प्रच्युतोऽहमनिन्दिते। प्राणयात्रां न विन्दे च दुःखितः क्षुधयार्दितः ॥०३-५८-१७॥
yeṣāṃ prakopād aiśvaryāt pracyuto'ham anindite. prāṇayātrāṃ na vinde ca duḥkhitaḥ kṣudhayā arditaḥ ॥03-58-17॥
[येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; प्रकोपात् (prakopāt) - from anger; ऐश्वर्यात् (aiśvaryāt) - from sovereignty; प्रच्युतः (pracyutaḥ) - deprived; अहम् (aham) - I; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one; प्राणयात्राम् (prāṇayātrām) - means of livelihood; न (na) - not; विन्दे (vinde) - find; च (ca) - and; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - afflicted; क्षुधया (kṣudhayā) - by hunger; अर्दितः (arditaḥ) - tormented;]
(O blameless one, I, deprived from sovereignty by the anger of whom, do not find (any) means of livelihood and am afflicted, tormented by hunger.)
O blameless one, by the anger of those whose power I have been deprived of, I do not find a means of sustenance and I am suffering, tormented by hunger. (03-58-17)
येषां कृते न सत्कारमकुर्वन्मयि नैषधाः। त इमे शकुना भूत्वा वासोऽप्यपहरन्ति मे ॥०३-५८-१८॥
yeṣāṃ kṛte na satkāram akurvan mayi naiṣadhāḥ। ta ime śakunā bhūtvā vāso'py apaharanti me ॥03-58-18॥
[येषां (yeṣāṃ) - whose; (of those); कृते (kṛte) - for the sake of; on account of; न (na) - not; सत्कारम् (satkāram) - honor; respect; अकुर्वन् (akurvan) - did (they) not do; did not perform; मयि (mayi) - towards me; नैषधाः (naiṣadhāḥ) - the people of Naishadha; inhabitants of Naisadha; ते (te) - they; इमे (ime) - these; शकुनाः (śakunāḥ) - birds; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; वासः (vāsaḥ) - clothing; garment; अपि (api) - even; also; अपहरन्ति (apaharanti) - take away; carry off; मे (me) - my; of me;]
(Whose for the sake of not honor did not do towards me the Naishadhas, they these birds having become even clothing carry off of me.)
Because the people of Naishadha did not honor me, these—having become birds—are even carrying off my clothing. (03-58-18)
वैषम्यं परमं प्राप्तो दुःखितो गतचेतनः। भर्ता तेऽहं निबोधेदं वचनं हितमात्मनः ॥०३-५८-१९॥
vaiṣamyaṃ paramaṃ prāpto duḥkhito gatacetanāḥ। bharatā te'haṃ nibodhedaṃ vacanaṃ hitamātmanaḥ॥03-58-19॥
[वैषम्यं (vaiṣamyaṃ) - distress; परमं (paramam) - supreme; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - reached; दुःखितः (duḥkhitaḥ) - afflicted; गतचेतनः (gatacetanaḥ) - having lost consciousness; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; ते (te) - your; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; निबोध (nibodha) - know; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनं (vacanam) - word; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - to yourself;]
(Distress supreme reached, afflicted, having lost consciousness. Husband your I, know this word beneficial to yourself.)
I, your husband—having reached supreme distress, afflicted and insensible—tell you these words for your own benefit. (03-58-19)
एते गच्छन्ति बहवः पन्थानो दक्षिणापथम्। अवन्तीमृक्षवन्तं च समतिक्रम्य पर्वतम् ॥०३-५८-२०॥
ete gacchanti bahavaḥ panthāno dakṣiṇāpatham। avantī-mṛkṣavantaṃ ca samatikramya parvatam ॥03-58-20॥
[एते (ete) - these; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पन्थानः (panthānaḥ) - paths; दक्षिणापथम् (dakṣiṇāpatham) - to the southern route; अवन्तीम् (avantīm) - Avanti (city); ऋक्षवन्तं (mṛkṣavantam) - Ṛikṣavanta (mountain); च (ca) - and; समतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having crossed over; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain;]
(These many paths go to the southern route; Avanti and Ṛikṣavanta, too, having crossed over the mountain.)
These many paths lead to the southern route, passing through Avanti and the Ṛikṣavanta mountain after crossing the mountain. (03-58-20)
एष विन्ध्यो महाशैलः पयोष्णी च समुद्रगा। आश्रमाश्च महर्षीणाममी पुष्पफलान्विताः ॥०३-५८-२१॥
eṣa vindhyo mahāśailaḥ payoṣṇī ca samudragā. āśramāś ca maharṣīṇām amī puṣpaphalānvitāḥ ॥03-58-21॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; (masculine nominative singular); विन्ध्यः (vindhyaḥ) - Vidhya (the Vindhya); महाशैलः (mahāśailaḥ) - great mountain; (masculine nominative singular); पयोष्णी (payoṣṇī) - Payoshni (name of a river); च (ca) - and; समुद्रगा (samudragā) - going to the ocean; आश्रमाः (āśramāḥ) - hermitages; (masculine nominative plural); च (ca) - and; महर्षीणाम् (maharṣīṇām) - of great sages; अमी (amī) - these; (masculine nominative plural); पुष्पफलान्विताः (puṣpaphalānvitāḥ) - endowed with flowers and fruits;]
(This Vindhya, the great mountain; Payoshni also, which goes to the ocean; and the hermitages of the great sages, these (are) endowed with flowers and fruits.)
Here is the Vindhya, the great mountain; Payoshni, which flows to the ocean; and these hermitages of the great sages, full of flowers and fruits. (03-58-21)
एष पन्था विदर्भाणामयं गच्छति कोसलान्। अतः परं च देशोऽयं दक्षिणे दक्षिणापथः ॥०३-५८-२२॥
eṣa panthā vidarbhāṇām ayaṃ gacchati kosalān। ataḥ paraṃ ca deśo'yaṃ dakṣiṇe dakṣiṇāpathaḥ॥03-58-22॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; पन्था (panthā) - path; विदर्भाणाम् (vidarbhāṇām) - of the Vidarbhas; अयम् (ayam) - this; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; कोसलान् (kosalān) - to Kosalas; अतः (ataḥ) - from here; परम् (param) - further; च (ca) - and; देशः (deśaḥ) - region; अयम् (ayam) - this; दक्षिणे (dakṣiṇe) - in the south; दक्षिणापथः (dakṣiṇāpathaḥ) - Dakṣiṇāpatha;]
(This path of the Vidarbhas, this goes to the Kosalas. From here further, and this region in the south (is) Dakṣiṇāpatha (the southern country).)
This is the road of the Vidarbhas; it leads to Kosala. Beyond this point, the country to the south is called Dakṣiṇāpatha (the southern region). (03-58-22)
ततः सा बाष्पकलया वाचा दुःखेन कर्शिता। उवाच दमयन्ती तं नैषधं करुणं वचः ॥०३-५८-२३॥
tataḥ sā bāṣpakalayā vācā duḥkhena karśitā। uvāca damayantī taṃ naiṣadhaṃ karuṇaṃ vacaḥ॥03-58-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; बाष्पकलया (bāṣpakalayā) - with a voice choked with tears; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; कर्शिता (karśitā) - emaciated; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; तं (taṃ) - to him; नैषधं (naiṣadham) - Nishadha (King Nala); करुणं (karuṇam) - piteous; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Then she, with a voice choked with tears, with speech, with sorrow, emaciated, spoke; Damayanti to him, to the Nishadha, piteous words.)
Then Damayanti, worn thin with sorrow, spoke piteous words to Nala of Nishadha with a voice choked by tears. (03-58-23)
उद्वेपते मे हृदयं सीदन्त्यङ्गानि सर्वशः। तव पार्थिव सङ्कल्पं चिन्तयन्त्याः पुनः पुनः ॥०३-५८-२४॥
udvepate me hṛdayaṁ sīdantyaṅgāni sarvaśaḥ। tava pārthiva saṅkalpaṁ cintayantyāḥ punaḥ punaḥ॥03-58-24॥
[उद्वेपते (udvepate) - is agitated; मे (me) - my; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; सीदन्ति (sīdanti) - fail; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; तव (tava) - your; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; सङ्कल्पं (saṅkalpam) - resolve; चिन्तयन्त्याः (cintayantyāḥ) - of the one thinking; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Is agitated my heart, fail limbs entirely, your O king resolve, of the one thinking, again and again.)
My heart is agitated, and all my limbs collapse completely, as I reflect again and again on your resolve, O king. (03-58-24)
हृतराज्यं हृतधनं विवस्त्रं क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितम्। कथमुत्सृज्य गच्छेयमहं त्वां विजने वने ॥०३-५८-२५॥
hṛtarājyaṃ hṛtadhanaṃ vivastraṃ kṣucchramānvitam। kathamutsṛjya gaccheyamahaṃ tvāṃ vijane vane॥03-58-25॥
[हृतराज्यं (hṛtarājyaṃ) - whose kingdom is lost; हृतधनं (hṛtadhanaṃ) - wealth is lost; विवस्त्रं (vivastraṃ) - deprived of garments; क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितम् (kṣucchramānvitam) - afflicted with hunger and hardship; कथम् (katham) - how; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - would go; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; विजने (vijane) - in a lonely (place); वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Whose kingdom is lost, wealth is lost, deprived of garments, afflicted with hunger and hardship, how abandoning you would go I, in a lonely forest.)
How could I abandon you, who have lost your kingdom and wealth, are deprived of garments, afflicted by hunger and hardship, and go alone in a lonely forest? (03-58-25)
श्रान्तस्य ते क्षुधार्तस्य चिन्तयानस्य तत्सुखम्। वने घोरे महाराज नाशयिष्यामि ते क्लमम् ॥०३-५८-२६॥
śrāntasya te kṣudhārttasya cintayānasya tat-sukham। vane ghore mahārāja nāśayiṣyāmi te klamam॥03-58-26॥
[श्रान्तस्य (śrāntasya) - of the weary; ते (te) - your; क्षुधार्तस्य (kṣudhārttasya) - of the one afflicted by hunger; चिन्तयानस्य (cintayānasya) - of the one pondering; तत् (tat) - that; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; वने (vane) - in the forest; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नाशयिष्यामि (nāśayiṣyāmi) - I shall remove; ते (te) - your; क्लमम् (klamam) - fatigue;]
(Of the weary, your, of the one afflicted by hunger, of the one pondering, that happiness in the terrible forest, O great king, I shall remove your fatigue.)
O great king, in this terrible forest, I shall remove your fatigue born of weariness, hunger, and anxious thought, and bring you happiness. (03-58-26)
न च भार्यासमं किञ्चिद्विद्यते भिषजां मतम्। औषधं सर्वदुःखेषु सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥०३-५८-२७॥
na ca bhāryāsamaṃ kiñcid vidyate bhiṣajāṃ matam. auṣadhaṃ sarvaduḥkheṣu satyam etad bravīmi te ॥03-58-27॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भार्यासमं (bhāryāsamam) - like (one’s) wife; (equal to wife); किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; (any thing); विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; exists; भिषजां (bhiṣajām) - of medicines; (of doctors/medicines); मतम् (matam) - opinion; औषधं (auṣadham) - medicine; सर्वदुःखेषु (sarvaduḥkheṣu) - in all sufferings; सत्यं (satyam) - true; (truth); एतत् (etad) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you;]
(And not anything like wife is found in the opinion of medicines. Medicine in all sufferings, true this I say to you.)
There is nothing equal to a wife in the opinion of physicians. Medicine is a remedy for all sorrows — this is true, I say to you. (03-58-27)

[नल (nala) - Nala; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Nala said.)
Nala said.
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं दमयन्ति सुमध्यमे। नास्ति भार्यासमं मित्रं नरस्यार्तस्य भेषजम् ॥०३-५८-२८॥
evametadyathāttha tvaṃ damayanti sumadhyame। nāsti bhāryāsamaṃ mitraṃ narasyārtasya bheṣajam ॥03-58-28॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; अथ (attha) - you have said; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; दमयन्ति (damayanti) - Damayanti; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O slender-waisted one; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समं (samaṃ) - equal; मित्रं (mitraṃ) - friend; नरस्य (narasya) - of a man; आर्तस्य (ārtasya) - afflicted; भेषजम् (bheṣajam) - remedy;]
(Thus, this is as you have said, O Damayanti, O slender-waisted one. There is not a friend equal to the wife, a remedy for an afflicted man.)
It is exactly as you have said, O Damayanti, O slender-waisted one. For an afflicted man, there is no friend or remedy equal to a wife. (03-58-28)
न चाहं त्यक्तुकामस्त्वां किमर्थं भीरु शङ्कसे। त्यजेयमहमात्मानं न त्वेव त्वामनिन्दिते ॥०३-५८-२९॥
na cāhaṃ tyaktukāmas tvāṃ kimarthaṃ bhīru śaṅkase। tyajeyam aham ātmānaṃ na tveva tvām anindite॥03-58-29॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; त्यक्तुकामः (tyaktukāmaḥ) - wishing to abandon; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; शङ्कसे (śaṅkase) - do you doubt; त्यजेयम् (tyajeyam) - I might forsake; अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - certainly; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Not and I wishing to abandon you, for what reason, timid one, do you doubt? I might forsake myself, not but certainly you, O blameless one.)
I am not at all desirous of leaving you, so why, timid one, do you have doubts? I might abandon myself, but certainly not you, O blameless one. (03-58-29)
दमयन्त्युवाच॥

यदि मां त्वं महाराज न विहातुमिहेच्छसि। तत्किमर्थं विदर्भाणां पन्थाः समुपदिश्यते ॥०३-५८-३०॥
yadi māṃ tvaṃ mahārāja na vihātumihaicchasi. tatkimarthaṃ vidarbhāṇāṃ panthāḥ samupadiśyate ॥03-58-30॥
[यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; मां (māṃ) (māṃ) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) (tvaṃ) - you; महाराज (mahārāja) (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) (na) - not; विहातुम् (vihātum) (vihātum) - to abandon; इह (iha) (iha) - here; इच्छसि (icchasi) (icchasi) - you wish; तत् (tat) (tat) - then; किमर्थम् (kimartham) (kimartham) - for what reason; विदर्भाणां (vidarbhāṇāṃ) (vidarbhāṇāṃ) - of the Vidarbhas; पन्थाः (panthāḥ) (panthāḥ) - path; समुपदिश्यते (samupadiśyate) (samupadiśyate) - is being instructed;]
(If me you, O great king, do not wish to abandon here, then for what reason is the path of the Vidarbhas being instructed?)
If, O great king, you do not wish to abandon me here, then why are you telling me the way to the land of the Vidarbhas? (03-58-30)
अवैमि चाहं नृपते न त्वं मां त्यक्तुमर्हसि। चेतसा त्वपकृष्टेन मां त्यजेथा महापते ॥०३-५८-३१॥
avaimi cāhaṃ nṛpate na tvaṃ māṃ tyaktum ar-hasi. cetasā tv apakṛṣṭena māṃ tyajethā mahā-pate ॥03-58-31॥
[अवैमि (avaimi) - I understand; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; माम् (mām) - me; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy (should); चेतसा (cetasā) - with mind; त्व (tva) - your; अपकृष्टेन (apakṛṣṭena) - disturbed; withdrawn; माम् (mām) - me; त्यजेथा (tyajethā) - you might abandon; महापते (mahāpate) - O great lord;]
(I understand and I, O king, you should not abandon me. With mind disturbed, you might abandon me, O great lord.)
I understand, O king, and you should not abandon me. If your mind is disturbed, O great lord, you might forsake me. (03-58-31)
पन्थानं हि ममाभीक्ष्णमाख्यासि नरसत्तम। अतोनिमित्तं शोकं मे वर्धयस्यमरप्रभ ॥०३-५८-३२॥
panthānaṃ hi mamābhīkṣṇam ākhyāsi narasattama। ato nimittaṃ śokaṃ me vardhayasy amara-prabha॥03-58-32॥
[पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - to me; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - frequently; आख्यासि (ākhyāsi) - you tell; नरसत्तम (narasattama) - O best of men; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - reason; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; मे (me) - my; वर्धयसि (vardhayasi) - you increase; अमरप्रभ (amara-prabha) - O lord among immortals;]
(Path indeed to me frequently you tell, O best of men; therefore the reason, grief my you increase, O lord among immortals.)
O best of men, you indeed keep telling me the path repeatedly; therefore, for this reason, you increase my grief, O lord among immortals. (03-58-32)
यदि चायमभिप्रायस्तव राजन्व्रजेदिति। सहितावेव गच्छावो विदर्भान्यदि मन्यसे ॥०३-५८-३३॥
yadi cāyam abhiprāyas tava rājan vrajed iti। sahitāv eva gacchāvaḥ vidarbhān yadi manyase॥03-58-33॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; अभिप्रायः (abhiprāyaḥ) - purpose; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; इति (iti) - thus; सहितौ (sahitau) - both together; एव (eva) - indeed; गच्छावः (gacchāvaḥ) - let us go; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to Vidarbha; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(If and this your purpose O king should go thus, both together indeed let us go to Vidarbha if you think.)
O king, if this is indeed your intention that we should go, then let us both together proceed to Vidarbha, if you think so. (03-58-33)
विदर्भराजस्तत्र त्वां पूजयिष्यति मानद। तेन त्वं पूजितो राजन्सुखं वत्स्यसि नो गृहे ॥०३-५८-३४॥
vidarbharājastatra tvāṃ pūjayiṣyati mānada। tena tvaṃ pūjito rājansukhaṃ vatsyasi no gṛhe ॥03-58-34॥
[विदर्भराजः (vidarbharājaḥ) - the king of Vidarbha; तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; पूजयिष्यति (pūjayiṣyati) - will honor; मानद (mānada) - bestower of honor; तेन (tena) - by him; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happily; वत्स्यसि (vatsyasi) - you will dwell; नो (no) - in our; गृहे (gṛhe) - house;]
(The king of Vidarbha there you will honor, bestower of honor. By him you honored, O king, happily you will dwell in our house.)
There, the king of Vidarbha will honor you, O bestower of honor. Being honored by him, O king, you will happily dwell in our house. (03-58-34)
