यथा राज्यं पितुस्ते तत्तथा मम न संशयः। न तु तत्र गमिष्यामि विषमस्थः कथञ्चन ॥०३-५९-१॥
yathā rājyaṃ pitus te tat tathā mama na saṃśayaḥ। na tu tatra gamiṣyāmi viṣamasthaḥ kathaṃcana॥03-59-1॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; as; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; sovereignty; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (your) father; ते (te) - your; तत् (tat) - that; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; मम (mama) - my; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; विषमस्थः (viṣamasthaḥ) - being in difficulty; being in hardship; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Just as kingdom of your father is yours, so it is mine, no doubt. But I will not go there, being in difficulty, in any way.)
Just as your father's kingdom is yours, so it is mine too, without a doubt. But I will not go there at all while I am in hardship. (03-59-1)
कथं समृद्धो गत्वाहं तव हर्षविवर्धनः। परिद्यूनो गमिष्यामि तव शोकविवर्धनः ॥०३-५९-२॥
kathaṁ samṛddho gatvāhaṁ tava harṣavivardhanaḥ। paridyūno gamiṣyāmi tava śokavivardhanaḥ॥03-59-2॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; समृद्धः (samṛddhaḥ) - prosperous; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तव (tava) - your; हर्षविवर्धनः (harṣavivardhanaḥ) - joy-increaser; परिद्यूनः (paridyūnaḥ) - utterly depleted; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; तव (tava) - your; शोकविवर्धनः (śokavivardhanaḥ) - sorrow-increaser;]
(How, prosperous, having gone, I, your joy-increaser? Utterly depleted, I will go, your sorrow-increaser.)
How, having gone prosperous, can I be your source of joy? Or, utterly depleted, how shall I go, becoming the source of your sorrow? (03-59-2)
बृहदश्व उवाच॥

इति ब्रुवन्नलो राजा दमयन्तीं पुनः पुनः। सान्त्वयामास कल्याणीं वाससोऽर्धेन संवृताम् ॥०३-५९-३॥
iti bruvann alo rājā damayantīṁ punaḥ punaḥ। sāntvayām āsa kalyāṇīṁ vāsaso 'rdhena saṁvṛtām ॥03-59-3॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - Damayanti; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayām āsa) - consoled; कल्याणीम् (kalyāṇīm) - the auspicious (one); वाससः अर्धेन (vāsasaḥ ard hena) - with half of his garment; संवृताम् (saṁvṛtām) - covered;]
(Thus speaking, Nala king Damayanti again and again consoled the auspicious (one), with half of his garment covered.)
Thus, King Nala, speaking again and again, consoled Damayanti, the auspicious lady, who was covered with half of his garment. (03-59-3)
तावेकवस्त्रसंवीतावटमानावितस्ततः। क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तौ सभां काञ्चिदुपेयतुः ॥०३-५९-४॥
tāvekavastrasaṁvītaāvaṭamānāvitastataḥ. kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntau sabhāṁ kāñcidupeyatuḥ ॥03-59-4॥
[तौ (tau) - they two; एकवस्त्रसंवीत (ekavastrasaṁvīta) - clad in a single cloth; आविटमान (āviṭamāna) - wearing a girdle; आवितस्ततः (āvitastataḥ) - bound from there; क्षुत्पिपासा (kṣutpipāsā) - hunger and thirst; परिश्रान्तौ (pariśrāntau) - quite exhausted; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - some; उपेयतुः (upeyatuḥ) - they two approached;]
(They two, clad in a single cloth, wearing a girdle bound from there, quite exhausted by hunger and thirst, approached some assembly hall.)
The two of them, dressed in a single cloth and girdled, weary from hunger and thirst, approached an assembly hall. (03-59-4)
तां सभामुपसम्प्राप्य तदा स निषधाधिपः। वैदर्भ्या सहितो राजा निषसाद महीतले ॥०३-५९-५॥
tāṁ sabhām-upasamprāpya tadā sa niṣadhādhipaḥ। vaidarbhyā sahito rājā niṣasāda mahītale ॥03-59-5॥
[तां (tāṁ) - that (accusative singular feminine); सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly hall; उपसम्प्राप्य (upasamprāpya) - having approached; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; स (sa) - he; निषधाधिपः (niṣadhādhipaḥ) - lord of Niṣadha; वैदर्भ्या (vaidarbhyā) - with the lady of Vidarbha; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied by; राजा (rājā) - king; निषसाद (niṣasāda) - sat down; was seated; महीतले (mahītale) - on the ground;]
(Having approached that assembly hall, then he, the lord of Niṣadha, accompanied by the lady of Vidarbha, the king, sat down on the ground.)
Then the lord of Niṣadha, accompanied by the princess of Vidarbha, entered that assembly and sat down upon the ground. (03-59-5)
स वै विवस्त्रो मलिनो विकचः पांसुगुण्ठितः। दमयन्त्या सह श्रान्तः सुष्वाप धरणीतले ॥०३-५९-६॥
sa vai vivastro malino vikacaḥ pāṃsuguṇṭhitaḥ। damayantyā saha śrāntaḥ suṣvāpa dharaṇī-tale॥03-59-6॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; विवस्त्रः (vivastraḥ) - without clothes; मलिनः (malinaḥ) - soiled; विकचः (vikacaḥ) - disheveled; पांसुगुण्ठितः (pāṃsuguṇṭhitaḥ) - covered with dust; दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - with Damayantī; सह (saha) - together with; श्रान्तः (śrāntaḥ) - exhausted; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; धरणीतले (dharaṇī-tale) - on the ground;]
(He indeed, without clothes, soiled, disheveled, covered with dust, with Damayantī, together with, exhausted, slept on the ground.)
He, indeed, without clothes, soiled, disheveled, covered in dust, together with Damayantī, exhausted, slept upon the ground. (03-59-6)
दमयन्त्यपि कल्याणी निद्रयापहृता ततः। सहसा दुःखमासाद्य सुकुमारी तपस्विनी ॥०३-५९-७॥
damayanty api kalyāṇī nidrayā-pahṛtā tataḥ। sahasā duḥkham āsādya sukumārī tapasvinī ॥03-59-7॥
[दमयन्ति (damayanti) - Damayanti; अपि (api) - also; कल्याणी (kalyāṇī) - auspicious woman; निद्रया (nidrayā) - by sleep; अपहृता (apahṛtā) - carried away; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - delicate maiden; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic woman;]
(Damayanti also, the auspicious woman, carried away by sleep, then, suddenly having reached suffering, the delicate maiden, ascetic woman.)
Damayanti, the auspicious and delicate maiden, was also carried away by sleep and then, suddenly experiencing suffering, became an ascetic. (03-59-7)
सुप्तायां दमयन्त्यां तु नलो राजा विशां पते। शोकोन्मथितचित्तात्मा न स्म शेते यथा पुरा ॥०३-५९-८॥
suptāyāṃ damayantyāṃ tu nalo rājā viśāṃ pate। śokonmathitacittātmā na sma śete yathā purā ॥03-59-8॥
[सुप्तायाम् (suptāyām) - when sleeping; दमयन्त्याम् (damayantyām) - as Damayantī; तु (tu) - but; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - the king; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; शोक-उन्मथित-चित्तात्मा (śoka-unmathita-cittātmā) - with mind and self shaken by grief; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - did indeed; शेते (śete) - he lay; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before;]
(When Damayantī was sleeping, but Nala the king, O lord of the people, with mind and self shaken by grief, did not indeed lie as before.)
But when Damayantī was asleep, King Nala, O lord of the people, whose mind was shaken by grief, indeed did not rest as he formerly did. (03-59-8)
स तद्राज्यापहरणं सुहृत्त्यागं च सर्वशः। वने च तं परिध्वंसं प्रेक्ष्य चिन्तामुपेयिवान् ॥०३-५९-९॥
sa tadrājyāpaharaṇaṃ suhṛttyāgaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ। vane ca taṃ paridhvaṃsaṃ prekṣya cintām upeyivān ॥03-59-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तद्-राज्य-अपहरणम् (tad-rājya-apaharaṇam) - that kingdom-taking away; सुहृत्-त्यागम् (suhṛt-tyāgam) - friend-abandonment; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; वने (vane) - in the forest; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; परिध्वंसम् (paridhvaṃsam) - calamity; ruin; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - sorrow; anxiety; उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - attained;]
(He, that kingdom-deprivation, friend-abandonment and in every way; in the forest and that calamity having seen, sorrow attained.)
He, having seen in the forest that total ruin—the taking away of his kingdom and abandonment by friends—fell into anxiety. (03-59-9)
किं नु मे स्यादिदं कृत्वा किं नु मे स्यादकुर्वतः। किं नु मे मरणं श्रेयः परित्यागो जनस्य वा ॥०३-५९-१०॥
kiṁ nu me syād idaṁ kṛtvā kiṁ nu me syād akurvataḥ। kiṁ nu me maraṇaṁ śreyaḥ parityāgo janasya vā॥03-59-10॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अकुर्वतः (akurvataḥ) - not doing; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; परित्यागः (parityāgaḥ) - abandonment; जनस्य (janasya) - of people; वा (vā) - or;]
(What indeed would be to me this having done? What indeed would be to me not doing? What indeed, to me, death is better or abandonment of people?)
What indeed will happen to me if I do this? What indeed will happen to me if I do not do it? Is death better for me, or abandoning people? (03-59-10)
मामियं ह्यनुरक्तेदं दुःखमाप्नोति मत्कृते। मद्विहीना त्वियं गच्छेत्कदाचित्स्वजनं प्रति ॥०३-५९-११॥
mām iyaṃ hy anuraktā idaṃ duḥkham āpnoti mat kṛte. mad-vihīnā tu iyaṃ gacchet kadācit sva-janaṃ prati ॥03-59-11॥
[माम् (mām) - me; इयम् (iyaṃ) - this (woman); हि (hi) - certainly; अनुरक्ता (anuraktā) - attached; इदं (idaṃ) - this; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; मत्कृते (mat-kṛte) - for my sake; मद्विहीना (mad-vihīnā) - bereft of me; तु (tu) - but; इयम् (iyaṃ) - this (woman); गच्छेत् (gacchet) - might go; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; स्वजनम् (sva-janam) - to her own people; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Me this certainly attached this suffering obtains for my sake. Bereft of me but this might go at some time towards her own people.)
This woman, being attached to me, certainly undergoes this suffering for my sake. But if bereft of me, she might at some time return to her own people. (03-59-11)
मया निःसंशयं दुःखमियं प्राप्स्यत्यनुत्तमा। उत्सर्गे संशयः स्यात्तु विन्देतापि सुखं क्वचित् ॥०३-५९-१२॥
mayā niḥsaṁśayaṁ duḥkhamiyaṁ prāpsyatyanuttamā। utsarge saṁśayaḥ syāttu vindetāpi sukhaṁ kvacit॥03-59-12॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; निःसंशयम् (niḥsaṁśayam) - without doubt; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; इयं (iyaṁ) - this (woman); प्राप्स्यति (prāpsyati) - will attain; अनुत्तमा (anuttamā) - the greatest; उत्सर्गे (utsarge) - in abandonment; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; तु (tu) - but; विन्देत् (vindet) - might obtain; अपि (api) - even; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere;]
(By me, without doubt, suffering this (woman) will attain the greatest. In abandonment, doubt might be but might obtain even happiness somewhere.)
By me, this woman will certainly suffer the greatest misery. But if she is abandoned, there is some doubt—she might even find happiness somewhere. (03-59-12)
स विनिश्चित्य बहुधा विचार्य च पुनः पुनः। उत्सर्गेऽमन्यत श्रेयो दमयन्त्या नराधिपः ॥०३-५९-१३॥
sa viniścitya bahudhā vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ। utsarge'manyata śreyo damayantyā narādhipaḥ॥03-59-13॥
[स (sa) - he; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having firmly decided; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; विचार्य (vicārya) - having considered; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; उत्सर्गे (utsarge) - in letting go; अमन्यत (amanyata) - thought; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better; दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - than Damayantī; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(He, having firmly decided, having considered in many ways and again and again, in letting go, thought better than Damayantī the king.)
The king, having firmly decided and considered in many ways again and again, thought that abandoning Damayantī was the better course. (03-59-13)
सोऽवस्त्रतामात्मनश्च तस्याश्चाप्येकवस्त्रताम्। चिन्तयित्वाध्यगाद्राजा वस्त्रार्धस्यावकर्तनम् ॥०३-५९-१४॥
so'avastritām ātmanaś ca tasyāś cāpy eka-vastritām. cintayitvā adhyagād rājā vastrārddhasya avakartanam ॥03-59-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवस्त्रताम् (avastritām) - state of being without clothes; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; च (ca) - and; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एकवस्त्रताम् (eka-vastritām) - state of having only one garment; चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having thought; अधिगात् (adhigāt) - understood; राजा (rājā) - the king; वस्त्रार्धस्य (vastrārddhasya) - of half the cloth; अवकर्तनम् (avakartanam) - cutting off;]
(He, the state of being without clothes of himself and also the state of her having only one garment, having thought, the king understood the cutting off of half the cloth.)
He thought about himself being without clothes and her being with only one garment, and the king realized (the impropriety of) cutting off half the cloth. (03-59-14)
कथं वासो विकर्तेयं न च बुध्येत मे प्रिया। चिन्त्यैवं नैषधो राजा सभां पर्यचरत्तदा ॥०३-५९-१५॥
kathaṃ vāso vikarteyaṃ na ca budhyeta me priyā। cintyaivaṃ naiṣadho rājā sabhāṃ paryacarat tadā॥03-59-15॥
[कथं (kathaṃ) - how; वासः (vāsaḥ) - clothing; विकर्तेयं (vikarteyaṃ) - would I cut; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बुध्येत (budhyeta) - would perceive; मे (me) - my; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; चिन्त्य (cintya) - thinking; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Nishadha (Nala); राजा (rājā) - king; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; पर्यचरत् (paryacarat) - was roaming; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(How clothing would I cut, and not would perceive my beloved; thinking thus, Nishadha king the assembly was roaming then (03-59-15))
How might I cut the clothing so that my beloved would not notice; thinking thus, King Nala of Nishadha then roamed about the assembly (03-59-15)
परिधावन्नथ नल इतश्चेतश्च भारत। आससाद सभोद्देशे विकोशं खड्गमुत्तमम् ॥०३-५९-१६॥
paridhāvannatha nala itaścetaśca bhārata। āsasāda sabhoddeśe vikośaṃ khaḍgamuttamam ॥03-59-16॥
[परिधावन् (paridhāvan) - running around; अथ (atha) - then; नल (nala) - Nala; इतश्च (itaśca) - hither and; एतश्च (etaśca) - thither and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आससाद (āsasāda) - he found; सभोद्देशे (sabhoddeśe) - in the assembly area; विकोशं (vikośam) - drawn; खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Running around then Nala hither and thither, O Bhārata, he found in the assembly area a drawn excellent sword.)
O Bhārata, then Nala, running here and there, found an excellent drawn sword in the assembly area. (03-59-16)
तेनार्धं वाससश्छित्त्वा निवस्य च परन्तपः। सुप्तामुत्सृज्य वैदर्भीं प्राद्रवद्गतचेतनः ॥०३-५९-१७॥
tenārdhaṃ vāsasaś chittvā nivasya ca parantapaḥ। suptām utsṛjya vaidarbhīṃ prādravad gatacetanaḥ॥03-59-17॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; अर्धम् (ardham) - half; वाससः (vāsasaḥ) - of the garment; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having torn; निवस्य (nivasya) - having put on; च (ca) - and; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of enemies; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - sleeping; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having left; वैदर्भीम् (vaidarbhīm) - the princess of Vidarbha; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - fled; गतचेतनः (gatacetanaḥ) - become unconscious;]
(By him, half of the garment having torn and having put on, and the scorcher of enemies, the sleeping princess of Vidarbha having left, fled, having become unconscious.)
Having torn half of his garment and put it on, the enemy-scorcher, leaving the sleeping princess of Vidarbha, fled away in a state of unconsciousness. (03-59-17)
ततो निबद्धहृदयः पुनरागम्य तां सभाम्। दमयन्तीं तथा दृष्ट्वा रुरोद निषधाधिपः ॥०३-५९-१८॥
tato nibaddhahṛdayaḥ punarāgamya tāṃ sabhām। damayantīṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā ruroda niṣadhādhipaḥ ॥03-59-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निबद्धहृदयः (nibaddhahṛdayaḥ) - with bound heart; पुनर्-आगम्य (punar-āgamya) - having come again; तां (tāṃ) - that; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; दमयन्तीं (damayantīṃ) - Damayantī; तथा (tathā) - thus; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रुरोद (ruroda) - wept; निषधाधिपः (niṣadhādhipaḥ) - king of Niṣadha;]
(Then, with bound heart, having come again to that assembly, Damayantī thus having seen, the king of Niṣadha wept.)
Then, his heart tightly bound, having returned again to that assembly and seeing Damayantī there, the king of Niṣadha wept. (03-59-18)
यां न वायुर्न चादित्यः पुरा पश्यति मे प्रियाम्। सेयमद्य सभामध्ये शेते भूमावनाथवत् ॥०३-५९-१९॥
yāṁ na vāyur na cādityaḥ purā paśyati me priyām। seyam adya sabhāmadhye śete bhūmāvanāthavat॥03-59-19॥
[याम् (yām) - whom (accusative, feminine singular); न (na) - not; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the wind; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the sun; पुरा (purā) - before; formerly; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; मे (me) - my; प्रियाम् (priyām) - beloved (accusative, feminine singular); सा (sā) - she; इयम् (iyam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the midst of the assembly; शेते (śete) - lies; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like one without protector;]
(Whom not the wind nor the sun before sees, my beloved; she, this today in the midst of the assembly lies on the ground like one without protector.)
She whom neither the wind nor the sun had seen before, my beloved—today she lies on the ground in the midst of the assembly like one without protector. (03-59-19)
इयं वस्त्रावकर्तेन संवीता चारुहासिनी। उन्मत्तेव वरारोहा कथं बुद्ध्वा भविष्यति ॥०३-५९-२०॥
iyaṃ vastrāvakartena saṃvītā cāru-hāsinī. unmatteva varārohā kathaṃ buddhvā bhaviṣyati ॥03-59-20॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (woman); वस्त्रावकर्तेन (vastrāvakartena) - by a garment (scarf, upper cloth); संवीता (saṃvītā) - clad; चारुहासिनी (cāru-hāsinī) - with a lovely smile; उन्मत्तेव (unmatteva) - like one maddened; वरारोहा (varārohā) - having an excellent figure; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(This (woman) by a garment clad, with a lovely smile, like one maddened, having an excellent figure, how having understood will become?)
How will this lovely-smiling, excellently-figured woman, clad only in a garment and behaving as if maddened, regain awareness? (03-59-20)
कथमेका सती भैमी मया विरहिता शुभा। चरिष्यति वने घोरे मृगव्यालनिषेविते ॥०३-५९-२१॥
kathamekā satī bhaimī mayā virahitā śubhā। cariṣyati vane ghore mṛgavyālaniṣevi te ॥03-59-21॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; एका (ekā) - alone; सती (satī) - chaste woman; भैमी (bhaimī) - daughter of Bhīma; मया (mayā) - by me; विरहिता (virahitā) - separated; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will move; वने (vane) - in the forest; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; मृगव्यालनिषेविते (mṛgavyālaniṣevi te) - inhabited by deer and wild beasts;]
(How alone, the chaste daughter of Bhīma, separated by me, the auspicious one, will move in the terrible forest inhabited by deer and wild beasts?)
How will the virtuous Bhīma's daughter, left alone and separated from me, survive in that dreadful forest haunted by wild beasts? (03-59-21)
गत्वा गत्वा नलो राजा पुनरेति सभां मुहुः। आकृष्यमाणः कलिना सौहृदेनापकृष्यते ॥०३-५९-२२॥

(Having gone, having gone, Nala, the king, again comes to the assembly repeatedly. Being drawn by Kali, by friendship he is pulled away.)
Again and again, king Nala goes and comes back to the assembly, repeatedly drawn by Kali and then, by friendship, pulled away. (3-59-22)
द्विधेव हृदयं तस्य दुःखितस्याभवत्तदा। दोलेव मुहुरायाति याति चैव सभां मुहुः ॥०३-५९-२३॥
dvidheva hṛdayaṁ tasya duḥkhitasyābhavattadā। doleva muhurāyāti yāti caiva sabhāṁ muhuḥ ॥03-59-23॥
[द्विधा-इव (dvidhā-iva) - as if split in two; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; तस्य (tasya) - his; दुःखितस्य (duḥkhitasya) - of the sorrowful; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; दोल-इव (dola-iva) - like on a swing; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; याति (yāti) - goes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सभाम् (sabhām) - to the assembly; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again;]
(As if split in two, his heart of the sorrowful became then. Like on a swing, again comes, goes and indeed to the assembly, again.)
At that moment, the heart of the sorrowful man seemed split in two. Like a swing, again and again, he kept coming and going to the assembly. (03-59-23)
सोऽपकृष्टस्तु कलिना मोहितः प्राद्रवन्नलः। सुप्तामुत्सृज्य तां भार्यां विलप्य करुणं बहु ॥०३-५९-२४॥
so'pakṛṣṭastu kalinā mohitaḥ prādravann alaḥ। suptām utsṛjya tāṃ bhāryāṃ vilapya karuṇaṃ bahu ॥03-59-24॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपकृष्टः (apakṛṣṭaḥ) - dragged away; तु (tu) - but; कलिना (kalinā) - by (the) Kali (demon); मोहितः (mohitaḥ) - deluded; bewildered; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - ran away; अलः (alaḥ) - alas! (He, dragged away but by Kali, bewildered, ran away alas! Having left sleeping her wife, lamenting pitifully much.)
He, dragged away and deluded by Kali, ran away in distress, alas! Having abandoned his sleeping wife, he lamented pitifully and at length. (03-59-24)
नष्टात्मा कलिना स्पृष्टस्तत्तद्विगणयन्नृपः। जगामैव वने शून्ये भार्यामुत्सृज्य दुःखितः ॥०३-५९-२५॥
naṣṭātmā kalinā spṛṣṭas tattad vigaṇayan nṛpaḥ। jagāmaiva vane śūnye bhāryām utsṛjya duḥkhitaḥ॥03-59-25॥
