अपक्रान्ते नले राजन्दमयन्ती गतक्लमा। अबुध्यत वरारोहा सन्त्रस्ता विजने वने ॥०३-६०-१॥
apakrānte nale rājan damayantī gataklamā। abudhyata varārohā santrastā vijane vane ॥03-60-1॥
[अपक्रान्ते (apakrānte) - having departed; (when) had gone away; नले (nale) - Nala; (king) Nala; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; गतक्लमा (gataklamā) - relieved of fatigue; whose exhaustion was gone; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - awoke; regained consciousness; वरारोहा (varārohā) - excellently-thighed (woman); she of beautiful hips; सन्त्रस्ता (santrastā) - terrified; frightened; विजने (vijane) - in an empty; in a lonely; वने (vane) - forest; wood;]
(When Nala had departed, O king, Damayantī, relieved of her exhaustion, woke up—she of beautiful hips, terrified, (in) a lonely forest.)
O king, when Nala had departed, Damayantī, whose fatigue had vanished, awoke—she of lovely hips, frightened, in the solitary forest. (03-60-1)
सापश्यमाना भर्तारं दुःखशोकसमन्विता। प्राक्रोशदुच्चैः सन्त्रस्ता महाराजेति नैषधम् ॥०३-६०-२॥
sāpaśyamānā bhartāraṃ duḥkhaśokasamanvitā। prākrośaduccaiḥ santrastā mahārājeti naiṣadham ॥03-60-2॥
[सा (sā) - she; अपश्यमाना (apaśyamānā) - seeing; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - her husband; दुःखशोकसमन्विता (duḥkhaśoka-samanvitā) - endowed with pain and grief; प्राक्रोशत् (prākrośat) - cried out; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; सन्त्रस्ता (santrastā) - terrified; महाराजेति (mahārājeti) - ‘O great king’ (mahārāja + iti); नैषधम् (naiṣadham) - the prince of the Nishadhas;]
(She seeing her husband, endowed with pain and grief, cried out loudly, terrified, 'O great king,' to the prince of the Nishadhas.)
Terrified and filled with sorrow and grief, she, upon seeing her husband, loudly cried out, 'O great king,' addressing the prince of the Nishadhas. (03-60-2)
हा नाथ हा महाराज हा स्वामिन्किं जहासि माम्। हा हतास्मि विनष्टास्मि भीतास्मि विजने वने ॥०३-६०-३॥
hā nātha hā mahārāja hā svāmin kiṁ jahāsi mām। hā hatāsmi vinaṣṭāsmi bhītāsmi vijane vane ॥03-60-3॥
[हा (hā) - alas; नाथ (nātha) - lord; हा (hā) - alas; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; हा (hā) - alas; स्वामिन् (svāmin) - master; किं (kiṁ) - why; जहासि (jahāsi) - do you abandon; माम् (mām) - me; हा (hā) - alas; हतास्मि (hatāsmi) - I am destroyed; विनष्टास्मि (vinaṣṭāsmi) - I am ruined; भीतास्मि (bhītāsmi) - I am afraid; विजने (vijane) - in a lonely; वने (vane) - forest;]
(Alas, lord, alas, great king, alas, master, why do you abandon me? Alas, I am destroyed, I am ruined, I am afraid in a lonely forest.)
Alas, O lord, alas, O great king, alas, O master, why are you abandoning me? Alas, I am lost, ruined, and fearful here alone in the forest. (03-60-3)
ननु नाम महाराज धर्मज्ञः सत्यवागसि। कथमुक्त्वा तथासत्यं सुप्तामुत्सृज्य मां गतः ॥०३-६०-४॥
nanu nāma mahārāja dharmajñaḥ satyavāg asi। katham uktvā tathāsatyaṃ suptām utsṛjya māṃ gataḥ॥03-60-4॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - surely; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truthful in speech; असि (asi) - you are; कथम् (katham) - how; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तथासत्यं (tathāsatyaṃ) - such untruth; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - sleeping (one); उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; माम् (mām) - me; गतः (gataḥ) - have gone;]
(Indeed surely, O great king, knower of dharma, you are truthful in speech; how, having spoken such untruth, having abandoned me sleeping, have (you) gone?)
Surely, O great king, you know righteousness and speak the truth. How could you, having spoken such an untruth, leave me sleeping and depart? (3-60-4)
कथमुत्सृज्य गन्तासि वश्यां भार्यामनुव्रताम्। विशेषतोऽनपकृते परेणापकृते सति ॥०३-६०-५॥
katham utsṛjya gantāsi vaśyāṃ bhāryām anuvratām. viśeṣato'napakṛte pareṇāpakṛte sati ॥03-60-5॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - will you go; वश्याम् (vaśyām) - obedient; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; अनुव्रताम् (anuvratām) - devoted; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; अनपकृते (anapakṛte) - not wronged; परेण (pareṇa) - by another; अपकृते (apakṛte) - having been wronged; सति (sati) - when;]
(How, having abandoned, will you go, obedient wife, devoted, especially not wronged by another, when having been wronged.)
How will you go, having abandoned your obedient and devoted wife, especially when she has not been wronged by another, but only wronged now? (03-60-5)
शक्ष्यसे ता गिरः सत्याः कर्तुं मयि नरेश्वर। यास्त्वया लोकपालानां संनिधौ कथिताः पुरा ॥०३-६०-६॥
śakṣyase tā giraḥ satyāḥ kartuṃ mayi nareśvara। yāstvayā lokapālānāṃ saṃnidhau kathitāḥ purā ॥03-60-6॥
[शक्ष्यसे (śakṣyase) - you will be able; (future of śak, 'to be able') ; ता (tā) - those; fem. pl.; गिरः (giraḥ) - words; utterances; सत्याः (satyāḥ) - true; truthful; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to make; मयि (mayi) - in me; towards me; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O king; lord of men; याः (yāḥ) - which; fem. pl.; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लोकपालानाम् (lokapālānām) - of the guardians of the worlds; of the protectors of the worlds; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; कथिताः (kathitāḥ) - were spoken; were uttered; पुरा (purā) - formerly; earlier;]
(You will be able those words true to do towards me, O king, which by you of the guardians of the worlds in the presence were spoken formerly.)
O king, you will be able to keep true those words which you formerly spoke in the presence of the guardians of the worlds towards me. (03-60-6)
पर्याप्तः परिहासोऽयमेतावान्पुरुषर्षभ। भीताहमस्मि दुर्धर्ष दर्शयात्मानमीश्वर ॥०३-६०-७॥
paryāptaḥ parihāso' yam etāvān puruṣarṣabha। bhītāham asmi durdharṣa darśay ātmānam īśvara ॥03-60-7॥
[पर्याप्तः (paryāptaḥ) - enough; परिहासः (parihāsaḥ) - jest; अयम् (ayam) - this; एतावान् (etāvān) - thus far; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; भीता (bhītā) - fearful; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - O difficult to assail; दर्शय (darśaya) - show; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; ईश्वर (īśvara) - O lord;]
(Enough jest this thus far, O best of men. Fearful I am, O difficult to assail, show yourself, O lord.)
This jest is enough, O best of men. I am afraid, O unconquerable one; show yourself, O lord. (03-60-7)
दृश्यसे दृश्यसे राजन्नेष तिष्ठसि नैषध। आवार्य गुल्मैरात्मानं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥०३-६०-८॥
dṛśyase dṛśyase rājanneṣa tiṣṭhasi naiṣadha। āvārya gulmairātmānaṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase ॥03-60-8॥
[दृश्यसे (dṛśyase) - you are seen; दृश्यसे (dṛśyase) - you are seen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; एष (eṣa) - this (one); तिष्ठसि (tiṣṭhasi) - you stand; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O prince of Nishaḍha; आवार्य (āvārya) - having covered; गुल्मैः (gulmair) - with bushes; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; किम् (kim) - why; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; प्रतिभाषसे (pratibhāṣase) - do you address;]
(You are seen, you are seen, O king! This one stands, O prince of Nishaḍha! Having concealed yourself with bushes, why do you not address me?)
You are seen, you are seen, O king! You stand here, O prince of Nishaḍha! Why do you hide yourself with bushes and not speak to me? (03-60-8)
नृशंसं बत राजेन्द्र यन्मामेवङ्गतामिह। विलपन्तीं समालिङ्ग्य नाश्वासयसि पार्थिव ॥०३-६०-९॥
nṛśaṁsaṁ bata rājendra yan māṁ evaṁgatām iha। vilapantīṁ samāliṅgya nāśvāsayasi pārthiva॥03-60-9॥
[नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruel; बत (bata) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यत् (yat) - that; माम् (mām) - me; एवम्-गताम् (evaṁ-gatām) - having come to such a state; इह (iha) - here; विलपन्तीम् (vilapantīm) - lamenting; समालिङ्ग्य (samāliṅgya) - having embraced; न (na) - not; आश्वासयसि (āśvāsayasi) - do you comfort; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Cruel, indeed, O king, that me having come to such a state here, lamenting, having embraced, you do not comfort, O king.)
How cruel it is, O king, that although I have fallen into such a condition here, and though I lament and cling to you, yet you do not comfort me, O king. (03-60-9)
न शोचाम्यहमात्मानं न चान्यदपि किञ्चन। कथं नु भवितास्येक इति त्वां नृप शोचिमि ॥०३-६०-१०॥
na śocāmy aham ātmānaṃ na ca anyad api kiñcana। kathaṃ nu bhavitā asya eka iti tvāṃ nṛpa śocimi ॥03-60-10॥
[न (na) - not; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अपि (api) - even; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; कथम् (katham) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; अस्य (asya) - of this; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; इति (iti) - thus; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; नृप (nṛpa) - king; शोचिमि (śocimi) - I grieve;]
(Not I grieve I self, nor indeed anything else. How indeed will be for this alone thus, you, king, I grieve.)
I do not grieve for myself, nor for anything else; but thinking how this one will be alone, O king, for you I grieve. (03-60-10)
कथं नु राजंस्तृषितः क्षुधितः श्रमकर्शितः। सायाह्ने वृक्षमूलेषु मामपश्यन्भविष्यसि ॥०३-६०-११॥
kathaṁ nu rājaṁs tṛṣitaḥ kṣudhitaḥ śramakarśitaḥ। sāyāhne vṛkṣamūleṣu mām apaśyan bhaviṣyasi ॥03-60-11॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तृषितः (tṛṣitaḥ) - thirsty; क्षुधितः (kṣudhitaḥ) - hungry; श्रमकर्शितः (śramakarśitaḥ) - emaciated by fatigue; सायाह्ने (sāyāhne) - in the evening; वृक्षमूलेषु (vṛkṣamūleṣu) - at the roots of trees; माम् (mām) - me; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(How indeed, O king, thirsty, hungry, emaciated by fatigue, in the evening at the roots of trees, me not seeing, you will become.)
O king, how will you fare, being thirsty, hungry, and worn out by fatigue, in the evening, at the roots of trees, when you do not see me? (03-60-11)
ततः सा तीव्रशोकार्ता प्रदीप्तेव च मन्युना। इतश्चेतश्च रुदती पर्यधावत दुःखिता ॥०३-६०-१२॥
tataḥ sā tīvraśokārtā pradīpteva ca manyunā। itaś cetaś ca rudatī paryadhāvata duḥkhitā ॥03-60-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; तीव्रशोकार्ता (tīvraśokārtā) - seized by intense sorrow; प्रदीप्तेव (pradīptā iva) - as if inflamed; च (ca) - and; मन्युना (manyunā) - with wrath; इतश्च (itaś ca) - here and; एतश्च (etaś ca) - there and; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; पर्यधावत (paryadhāvata) - ran about; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - afflicted;]
(Then she, seized by intense sorrow, as if inflamed with wrath, weeping here and there, ran about, afflicted.)
Then she, overwhelmed by intense grief and as if burning with anger, wept and ran about in distress here and there. (03-60-12)
मुहुरुत्पतते बाला मुहुः पतति विह्वला। मुहुरालीयते भीता मुहुः क्रोशति रोदिति ॥०३-६०-१३॥
muhur utpatate bālā muhuḥ patati vihvalā। muhur ālīyate bhītā muhuḥ krośati roditi॥03-60-13॥
[मुहु (muhuḥ) - again and again; उत्पतते (utpatate) - rises up; बाला (bālā) - the girl; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; पतति (patati) - falls; विह्वला (vihvalā) - confused; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; आलीयते (ālīyate) - draws back; भीता (bhītā) - frightened; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; क्रोशति (krośati) - cries out; रोदिति (roditi) - weeps;]
(Again and again rises up the girl, again and again falls, (being) confused. Again and again draws back (she who is) frightened, again and again cries out, weeps.)
The girl repeatedly rises up and repeatedly falls in confusion; again and again, frightened, she draws back, cries out, and weeps. (03-60-13)
सा तीव्रशोकसन्तप्ता मुहुर्निःश्वस्य विह्वला। उवाच भैमी निष्क्रम्य रोदमाना पतिव्रता ॥०३-६०-१४॥
sā tīvraśokasantaptā muhurniḥśvasya vihvalā। uvāca bhaimī niṣkramya rodamānā pativratā ॥03-60-14॥
[सा (sā) - she; तीव्रशोकसन्तप्ता (tīvra-śoka-santaptā) - afflicted by intense grief; मुहुर्निःश्वस्य (muhur-niḥśvasya) - repeatedly sighing; विह्वला (vihvalā) - distressed; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भैमी (bhaimī) - Bhimās daughter (Damayantī); निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having gone out; रोदमाना (rodamānā) - weeping; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - faithful wife;]
(She, afflicted by intense grief, repeatedly sighing, distressed, said Bhimā's daughter, having gone out, weeping, faithful wife.)
Afflicted with intense grief, repeatedly sighing and overwhelmed, Bhimā's daughter, the faithful wife, went out and, while weeping, spoke. (03-60-14)
यस्याभिशापाद्दुःखार्तो दुःखं विन्दति नैषधः। तस्य भूतस्य तद्दुःखाद्दुःखमभ्यधिकं भवेत् ॥०३-६०-१५॥
yasyābhiśāpād duḥkhārto duḥkhaṁ vindati naiṣadhaḥ। tasya bhūtasya tadduḥkhād duḥkham abhyadhikaṁ bhavet ॥03-60-15॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; अभिशापात् (abhiśāpāt) - from curse; दुःखार्तः (duḥkhārtaḥ) - afflicted by suffering; दुःखं (duḥkham) - pain; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Naiṣadha (Nala); तस्य (tasya) - of that; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - being; तत् (tat) - that; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from pain; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - excessive; भवेत् (bhavet) - would become;]
(By whose curse, afflicted by pain, pain finds Naiṣadha; for that being, from that pain, greater pain would become.)
By whose curse Naiṣadha (Nala) suffers pain, that being would suffer greater pain than that pain. (03-60-15)
अपापचेतसं पापो य एवं कृतवान्नलम्। तस्माद्दुःखतरं प्राप्य जीवत्वसुखजीविकाम् ॥०३-६०-१६॥
apāpacetasam pāpo ya evaṃ kṛtvānnalam। tasmādduḥkhataraṃ prāpya jīvatvasukhajīvikām॥03-60-16॥
[अपापचेतसं (apāpa-cetasam) - whose mind is free from evil; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked man; यः (yaḥ) - who; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; अन्-नलम् (an-nalam) - not fitting; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataram) - a greater suffering; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; जीवत्व (jīvatva) - life; सुखजीविकाम् (sukha-jīvikām) - comfortable livelihood;]
(A wicked man, having acted thus toward one whose mind is free from evil, not fitting; therefore, having attained greater suffering, (let him) live a life of comfortable livelihood.)
A wicked man, having acted thus toward one whose mind was free from evil, did a deed that was unfitting; therefore, he should experience a greater suffering and live on, maintaining his life with meager comfort. (03-60-16)
एवं तु विलपन्ती सा राज्ञो भार्या महात्मनः। अन्वेषति स्म भर्तारं वने श्वापदसेविते ॥०३-६०-१७॥
evaṃ tu vilapantī sā rājño bhāryā mahātmanaḥ। anveṣati sma bhartāraṃ vane śvāpadasevite ॥03-60-17॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus;', तु (tu) - but; विलपन्ती (vilapantī) - lamenting; सा (sā) - she; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; अन्वेषति (anveṣati) - she searches; स्म (sma) - indeed; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; वने (vane) - in the forest; श्वापदसेविते (śvāpadasevite) - haunted by wild beasts;]
(Thus but lamenting she, of the king (the) wife, of the great-souled, searched indeed (her) husband in the forest haunted by wild beasts.)
Thus, as she lamented, the wife of the great-souled king searched for her husband in the forest haunted by wild beasts. (03-60-17)
उन्मत्तवद्भीमसुता विलपन्ती ततस्ततः। हा हा राजन्निति मुहुरितश्चेतश्च धावति ॥०३-६०-१८॥
unmattavadbhīmasutā vilapantī tatastataḥ. hā hā rājanniti muhuritaścetaśca dhāvati ॥03-60-18॥
[उन्मत्तवत् (unmattavat) - like one mad; भीमसुता (bhīmasutā) - the son of Bhīma; विलपन्ती (vilapantī) - lamenting; ततः (tataḥ) - here and there; ततः (tataḥ) - there and here; हा हा (hā hā) - alas! alas!; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इति (iti) - thus; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; च (ca) - and; इतश्च (itash ca) - here and; धावति (dhāvati) - runs;]
(Like one mad, the son of Bhīma, lamenting, here and there, "Alas! Alas! O king!" thus, again and again, and here and runs.)
The son of Bhīma, acting like one mad, lamenting, wanders here and there, repeatedly crying, "Alas! Alas! O king!" and runs about wildly. (03-60-18)
तां शुष्यमाणामत्यर्थं कुररीमिव वाशतीम्। करुणं बहु शोचन्तीं विलपन्तीं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥०३-६०-१९॥
tāṃ śuṣyamāṇāmatyarthaṃ kurarīm iva vāśatīm. karuṇaṃ bahu śocantīṃ vilapantīṃ muhurmuḥ ॥03-60-19॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; शुष्यमाणाम् (śuṣyamāṇām) - becoming dry; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; कुररीम् (kurarīm) - like a female curlew; इव (iva) - as if; वाशतीम् (vāśatīm) - crying aloud; करुणम् (karuṇam) - pitifully; बहु (bahu) - much; शोचन्तीम् (śocantīm) - lamenting; विलपन्तीम् (vilapantīm) - wailing; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Her, becoming excessively dry, like a female curlew crying aloud, pitifully, much lamenting, wailing, again and again.)
Seeing her, wasted away in grief, crying again and again in a pitiful voice like a female curlew, lamenting and wailing constantly. (03-60-19)
सहसाभ्यागतां भैमीमभ्याशपरिवर्तिनीम्। जग्राहाजगरो ग्राहो महाकायः क्षुधान्वितः ॥०३-६०-२०॥
sahasābhyāgatāṃ bhaimīm abhyāśaparivartinīm। jagrāhājagaro grāho mahākāyaḥ kṣudhānvitaḥ॥03-60-20॥
[सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; अभ्यागताम् (abhyāgatām) - having approached; भैमीम् (bhaimīm) - Bhaimī (the daughter of Bhīma); अभ्याशपरिवर्तिनीम् (abhyāśaparivartinīm) - moving nearby; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; अजगरः (ajagaraḥ) - the python; ग्राहः (grāhaḥ) - the catcher; महाकायः (mahākāyaḥ) - of huge body; क्षुधान्वितः (kṣudhānvitaḥ) - afflicted with hunger;]
(Suddenly, having approached Bhīmī, who was moving nearby, the python, the catcher of huge body, afflicted with hunger, seized.)

सा ग्रस्यमाना ग्राहेण शोकेन च पराजिता। नात्मानं शोचति तथा यथा शोचति नैषधम् ॥०३-६०-२१॥
sā grasyamānā grāheṇa śokena ca parājitā। nātmānaṃ śocati tathā yathā śocati naiṣadham ॥03-60-21॥

(She, being seized by the crocodile and overcome by grief, does not grieve for herself so as she grieves for Naiṣadha.)

हा नाथ मामिह वने ग्रस्यमानामनाथवत्। ग्राहेणानेन विपिने किमर्थं नाभिधावसि ॥०३-६०-२२॥

(O protector, me here in the forest, being devoured like one without protector, by this crocodile in the wild, for what reason do you not rush?)
O protector! Why do you not come to my rescue in this forest as I am being devoured by this crocodile, like one without a protector? (03-60-22)
कथं भविष्यसि पुनर्मामनुस्मृत्य नैषध। पापान्मुक्तः पुनर्लब्ध्वा बुद्धिं चेतो धनानि च ॥०३-६०-२३॥
kathaṁ bhaviṣyasi punarmāmanusmṛtya naiṣadha। pāpānmuktaḥ punarlabdhvā buddhiṁ ceto dhanāni ca ॥03-60-23॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; माम् (mām) - me; अनुस्मृत्य (anusmṛtya) - having remembered; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O son of Nala; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intelligence; चेतः (cetaḥ) - mind; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealths; च (ca) - and;]
(How will you become again, having remembered me, O Naiṣadha, freed from sin, having again obtained intelligence, mind, and wealth?)
O Naiṣadha, how will you be after you have remembered me again, and after being freed from sin and regaining intelligence, mind, and wealth? (03-60-23)
श्रान्तस्य ते क्षुधार्तस्य परिग्लानस्य नैषध। कः श्रमं राजशार्दूल नाशयिष्यति मानद ॥०३-६०-२४॥
śrāntasya te kṣudhārtasya pariglānasya naiṣadha। kaḥ śramaṃ rājaśārdūla nāśayiṣyati mānada ॥03-60-24॥

(Of the wearied, your, afflicted by hunger, exhausted, O son of Nala, who, weariness, O tiger among kings, will remove, O bestower of honor?)
O Naisadha, O tiger among kings, you are wearied, afflicted by hunger, exhausted—who will remove your weariness, O bestower of honor? (03-60-24)
तामकस्मान्मृगव्याधो विचरन्गहने वने। आक्रन्दतीमुपश्रुत्य जवेनाभिससार ह ॥०३-६०-२५॥
tāmakasmān mṛgavyādho vicaran gahane vane। ākrandatīm upaśrutya javena abhisasāra ha ॥03-60-25॥

Suddenly, the hunter wandering in the dense forest, having heard her crying, quickly approached. (03-60-25)
तां स दृष्ट्वा तथा ग्रस्तामुरगेणायतेक्षणाम्। त्वरमाणो मृगव्याधः समभिक्रम्य वेगितः ॥०३-६०-२६॥
tāṃ sa dṛṣṭvā tathā grastām urageṇa āyatekṣaṇām। tvaramāṇo mṛgavyādhaḥ samabhikramya vegitaḥ॥03-60-26॥

Seeing her, wide-eyed and thus seized by the serpent, the hunter quickly approached with speed. (03-60-26)
मुखतः पातयामास शस्त्रेण निशितेन ह। निर्विचेष्टं भुजङ्गं तं विशस्य मृगजीवनः ॥०३-६०-२७॥
mukhataḥ pātayāmāsa śastreṇa niśitena ha। nirviceṣṭaṃ bhujaṅgaṃ taṃ viśasya mṛgajīvanaḥ ॥03-60-27॥
[मुखतः (mukhataḥ) - from the mouth; पातयामास (pātayāmāsa) - caused to fall; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - with a weapon; निशितेन (niśitena) - sharp; ह (ha) - indeed; निर्विचेष्टं (nirviceṣṭam) - motionless; भुजङ्गं (bhujaṅgam) - serpent; तं (taṃ) - him; विशस्य (viśasya) - after piercing; मृगजीवनः (mṛgajīvanaḥ) - the animal-living (hunter);]
(From the mouth, he caused to fall with a weapon, sharp indeed, the motionless serpent, him, after piercing, the animal-living (hunter).)
The hunter, having pierced the motionless serpent with his sharp weapon, struck it from the mouth and caused it to fall down. (03-60-27)
मोक्षयित्वा च तां व्याधः प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन च। समाश्वास्य कृताहारामथ पप्रच्छ भारत ॥०३-६०-२८॥
mokṣayitvā ca tāṃ vyādhaḥ prakṣālya salilena ca। samāśvāsya kṛtāhārām atha papraccha bhārata ॥03-60-28॥
[मोक्षयित्वा (mokṣayitvā) - having released; (from bondage;) च (ca) - and; तां (tāṃ) - her; व्याधः (vyādhaḥ) - the hunter; प्रक्षाल्य (prakṣālya) - having washed; सलिलेन (salilena) - with water; च (ca) - and; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having consoled; कृताहाराम् (kṛtāhārām) - one who had eaten; अथ (atha) - then; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Having released her and the hunter, having washed with water, and having consoled her who had eaten, then asked, O Bhārata.)

कस्य त्वं मृगशावाक्षि कथं चाभ्यागता वनम्। कथं चेदं महत्कृच्छ्रं प्राप्तवत्यसि भामिनि ॥०३-६०-२९॥
kasya tvaṃ mṛgaśāvākṣi kathaṃ cābhyāgatā vanam। kathaṃ cedaṃ mahatkṛcchraṃ prāptavatyasi bhāmini॥03-60-29॥
[कस्य (kasya) - whose; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मृगशावाक्षि (mṛgaśāvākṣi) - fawn-eyed one; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; अभ्यागता (abhyāgatā) - have arrived; वनम् (vanam) - forest; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; महत्कृच्छ्रं (mahatkṛcchraṃ) - great difficulty; प्राप्तवत्यसि (prāptavatyasi) - you have encountered; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O lovely one;]
(Whose you, fawn-eyed one, how and have arrived (in the) forest; how and this great difficulty you have encountered, O lovely one.)
O fawn-eyed lady, whose are you? How have you come to the forest, and how have you encountered this great difficulty, O beautiful one? (3-60-29)
दमयन्ती तथा तेन पृच्छ्यमाना विशां पते। सर्वमेतद्यथावृत्तमाचचक्षेऽस्य भारत ॥०३-६०-३०॥
damayantī tathā tena pṛcchyamānā viśāṃ pate। sarvam etad yathā vṛttam ācacakṣe'sya bhārata॥03-60-30॥

(Damayantī thus by him being asked, O lord of the people, all this as it happened related to him, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, Damayantī, thus being asked by him, related all this as it had happened to him, O lord of the people. (03-60-30)
तामर्धवस्त्रसंवीतां पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम्। सुकुमारानवद्याङ्गीं पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् ॥०३-६०-३१॥
tām ardha-vastra-saṁvītām pīna-śroṇi-payodharām। sukumārānavadyāṅgīṁ pūrṇa-candra-nibhānanām॥03-60-31॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अर्धवस्त्रसंवीताम् (ardha-vastra-saṁvītām) - clad in half a garment; पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम् (pīna-śroṇi-payodharām) - with full hips and breasts; सुकुमाराम् (sukumārām) - delicate; अनवद्याङ्गीम् (anavadyāṅgīm) - with flawless limbs; पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् (pūrṇa-candra-nibhānanām) - whose face resembles the full moon;]
(Her, clad in half a garment, with full hips and breasts, delicate, with flawless limbs, whose face resembles the full moon.)

अरालपक्ष्मनयनां तथा मधुरभाषिणीम्। लक्षयित्वा मृगव्याधः कामस्य वशमेयिवान् ॥०३-६०-३२॥
arālapakṣmanayanāṃ tathā madhurabhāṣiṇīm। lakṣayitvā mṛgavyādhaḥ kāmasya vaśameyivān ॥03-60-32॥
[अरालपक्ष्मनयनाम् (arālapakṣmanayanām) - with curved-eyelashed eyes; तथा (tathā) - also; मधुरभाषिणीम् (madhurabhāṣiṇīm) - sweet-speaking (woman); लक्षयित्वा (lakṣayitvā) - having observed; मृगव्याधः (mṛgavyādhaḥ) - the hunter; कामस्य (kāmasya) - of desire; वशम् (vaśam) - under the control; एयिवान् (eyivān) - fell;]
(Having seen the one with curved-eyelashed eyes, also sweet-speaking, the hunter, under the control of desire, fell.)
Having noticed the woman with curved eyelashes and sweet speech, the hunter became subject to desire. (03-60-32)
तामथ श्लक्ष्णया वाचा लुब्धको मृदुपुर्वया। सान्त्वयामास कामार्तस्तदबुध्यत भामिनी ॥०३-६०-३३॥
tām atha ślakṣṇayā vācā lubdhakaḥ mṛdu-pūrvayā। sāntvayām āsa kāma-ārtaḥ tad abudhyata bhāminī॥03-60-33॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - gentle; वाचा (vācā) - with speech; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; मृदुपुर्वया (mṛdu-pūrvayā) - with soft-before (with prior softness); सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayām āsa) - soothed; कामार्तः (kāma-ārtaḥ) - distressed by desire; तत् (tat) - that; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - became aware; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the beautiful woman;]
(Her then with gentle speech the hunter with prior softness soothed, distressed by desire; that became aware the beautiful woman.)
Then the hunter, distressed by desire, soothed her with gentle and soft words; the beautiful woman became aware of it. (03-60-33)
दमयन्ती तु तं दुष्टमुपलभ्य पतिव्रता। तीव्ररोषसमाविष्टा प्रजज्वालेव मन्युना ॥०३-६०-३४॥
damayantī tu taṁ duṣṭam-upalabhya pativratā। tīvra-roṣa-samāviṣṭā prajajvāla iva manyunā॥03-60-34॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; however; तं (taṁ) - him; दुष्टम् (duṣṭam) - wicked; evil; उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having perceived; having found; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - chaste wife; devoted to husband; तीव्ररोषसमाविष्टा (tīvra-roṣa-samāviṣṭā) - filled with intense anger; प्रजज्वाला (prajajvāla) - blazed up; इव (iva) - as if; like; मन्युना (manyunā) - by wrath;]
(Damayanti but him wicked having perceived, chaste wife, filled with intense anger, blazed up as if by wrath.)
But Damayanti, the chaste wife, perceiving that wicked man, was filled with intense anger and blazed up as if with wrath. (03-60-34)
स तु पापमतिः क्षुद्रः प्रधर्षयितुमातुरः। दुर्धर्षां तर्कयामास दीप्तामग्निशिखामिव ॥०३-६०-३५॥
sa tu pāpamatiḥ kṣudraḥ pradharṣayitum-āturaḥ। durdharṣāṃ tarkayāmāsa dīptām agniśikhām iva॥03-60-35॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; पापमतिः (pāpamatiḥ) - with an evil mind; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - vile; प्रधर्षयितुम् (pradharṣayitum) - to violate; आतुरः (āturaḥ) - eager; दुर्धर्षाम् (durdharṣām) - unassailable (feminine accusative); तर्कयामास (tarkayāmāsa) - attempted; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - blazing; अग्निशिखाम् (agniśikhām) - flame of fire; इव (iva) - like;]
(He but evil-minded, vile, eager to violate, the unassailable, attempted, blazing, flame of fire, like.)
But he, wicked-minded and vile, eager to violate, attempted to attack her—who was unassailable—just as one might try to touch a blazing flame of fire. (03-60-35)
दमयन्ती तु दुःखार्ता पतिराज्यविनाकृता। अतीतवाक्पथे काले शशापैनं रुषा किल ॥०३-६०-३६॥
damayantī tu duḥkhārtā patirājyavinākṛtā। atītavākpathe kāle śaśāpainaṃ ruṣā kila॥03-60-36॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; तु (tu) - but; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; पतिराज्यविनाकृता (patirājyavinākṛtā) - bereft of husband and kingdom; अतीतवाक्पथे (atītavākpathe) - in the course of past words; काले (kāle) - at the time; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; एनं (enaṃ) - him; रुषा (ruṣā) - with anger; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(Damayanti but afflicted by sorrow bereft of husband and kingdom in the course of past words at the time cursed him with anger indeed.)
But Damayanti, afflicted by sorrow and deprived of husband and kingdom, at that time, in the course of earlier words, indeed cursed him in anger. (03-60-36)
यथाहं नैषधादन्यं मनसापि न चिन्तये। तथायं पततां क्षुद्रः परासुर्मृगजीवनः ॥०३-६०-३७॥
yathāhaṃ naiṣadhād anyaṃ manasāpi na cintaye। tathāyaṃ patatāṃ kṣudraḥ parāsur mṛgajīvanaḥ॥03-60-37॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; अहम् (aham) - I; myself; नैषधात् (naiṣadhāt) - from Naisadha; from the king of Naisadha; (Nala); अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; another; मनसा अपि (manasā api) - even in mind; even mentally; न (na) - not; no; चिन्तये (cintaye) - think; contemplate; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; likewise; thus; अयम् (ayam) - this; he; पतताम् (patatām) - of the fallen ones; among the fallen; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - mean; base; परासुः (parāsuḥ) - with life depending on others; मृगजीवनः (mṛgajīvanaḥ) - having the life of a beast; animal-like living;]
(Just as I from Naisadha another even in mind do not think, so this among the fallen, base, with life dependent on others, animal-living.)
Just as I do not even think of anyone other than Naisadha (Nala), even in my mind, so too is this mean, beast-like creature among the fallen who lives at the expense of others. (03-60-37)
उक्तमात्रे तु वचने तया स मृगजीवनः। व्यसुः पपात मेदिन्यामग्निदग्ध इव द्रुमः ॥०३-६०-३८॥
uktamātre tu vacane tayā sa mṛgajīvanaḥ। vyasuḥ papāta medinyām agnidagdha iva drumaḥ ॥03-60-38॥
[उक्तमात्रे (uktamātre) - upon just being said; तु (tu) - but; वचने (vacane) - word; तया (tayā) - by her; स (sa) - he; मृगजीवनः (mṛgajīvanaḥ) - Mṛgajīvana; वयसुः (vyasuḥ) - lifeless; पपात (papāta) - fell; मेदिन्याम् (medinyām) - on the ground; अग्निदग्ध (agnidagdha) - burnt by fire; इव (iva) - like; द्रुमः (drumaḥ) - tree;]
(Upon just being said but word by her, he Mṛgajīvana, lifeless, fell on the ground like a tree burnt by fire.)
But as soon as those words were said by her, Mṛgajīvana fell lifeless to the ground like a tree scorched by fire. (03-60-38)
