badarī-bilva-sañchannaṃ nyagrodhaiś ca samākulam। priyāla-tāla-kharjūra-harītaka-bibhītakaiḥ॥03-61-5॥

nānādhātuśatairnaddhān vividhān api cācalān। nikuñjān pakṣi-saṅghuṣṭān darīś ca adbhuta-darśanāḥ॥ nadīḥ sarāṃsi vāpīś ca vividhānś ca mṛga-dvijān॥03-61-6॥

Then, endowed with brilliance, fame, steadfastness, and supreme beauty, the princess of Vidarbha wandered alone in search of Nala. (03-61-9)
नाबिभ्यत्सा नृपसुता भैमी तत्राथ कस्यचित्। दारुणामटवीं प्राप्य भर्तृव्यसनकर्शिता ॥०३-६१-१०॥
nābhibhyatsā nṛpasutā bhaimī tatrātha kasyacit. dāruṇāmaṭavīṃ prāpya bhartṛvyasana-karśitā ॥03-61-10॥

विदर्भतनया राजन्विललाप सुदुःखिता। भर्तृशोकपरीताङ्गी शिलातलसमाश्रिता ॥०३-६१-११॥
vidarbhatanayā rājan vilalāpa suduḥkhitā। bhartṛśokaparītāṅgī śilātalasamāśritā ॥03-61-11॥

अश्वमेधादिभिर्वीर क्रतुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः। कथमिष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्र मयि मिथ्या प्रवर्तसे ॥०३-६१-१३॥
aśvamedhādibhir vīra kratubhiḥ svāpta-dakṣiṇaiḥ। katham iṣṭvā naravyāghra mayi mithyā pravartase ॥03-61-13॥

(By horse sacrifices and others, O hero, by sacrifices with rightfully obtained fees, how having worshipped, O tiger among men, towards me false you behave?)
O hero, by performing horse sacrifices and other rites with rightfully earned fees, and after worshipping, O tiger among men, how is it that you behave falsely towards me? (03-61-13)
यत्त्वयोक्तं नरव्याघ्र मत्समक्षं महाद्युते। कर्तुमर्हसि कल्याण तदृतं पार्थिवर्षभ ॥०३-६१-१४॥
yat tvayoktaṃ naravyāghra matsamakṣaṃ mahādyute। kartum arhasi kalyāṇa tad ṛtaṃ pārthivarṣabha ॥03-61-14॥
[यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - has been spoken; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; मत्त्समक्षं (matsamakṣam) - in my presence; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly resplendent one; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to perform; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; कल्याण (kalyāṇa) - O auspicious one; तत् (tat) - that; ऋतम् (ṛtam) - truly; पार्थिवर्षभ (pārthivarṣabha) - O bull among kings;]
(Which by you has been spoken, O tiger among men, in my presence, O greatly resplendent one, to perform you ought, O auspicious one; that truly, O bull among kings.)
O tiger among men, what you have spoken in my presence, O illustrious and auspicious one, that indeed you ought to fulfill, O best of kings. (03-61-14)
यथोक्तं विहगैर्हंसैः समीपे तव भूमिप। मत्सकाशे च तैरुक्तं तदवेक्षितुमर्हसि ॥०३-६१-१५॥
yathoktaṁ vihagair haṁsaiḥ samīpe tava bhūmipa। matsakāśe ca tair uktaṁ tad avekṣitum arhasi॥03-61-15॥
[यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as said; विहगैः (vihagaiḥ) - by birds; हंसैः (haṁsaiḥ) - by swans; समीपे (samīpe) - near; तव (tava) - your; भूमिप (bhūmipa) - O king; मत्सकाशे (matsakāśe) - in my presence; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; उक्तं (uktam) - spoken; तत् (tad) - that; अवेक्षितुम् (avekṣitum) - to examine; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(As said by the birds, by the swans, near you, O king, and in my presence, by those spoken, that, to examine, you ought.)
O king, you ought to examine that which was said by the birds, the swans, near you and in my presence. (03-61-15)
चत्वार एकतो वेदाः साङ्गोपाङ्गाः सविस्तराः। स्वधीता मानवश्रेष्ठ सत्यमेकं किलैकतः ॥०३-६१-१६॥
catvāra ekato vedāḥ sāṅgopāṅgāḥ savistarāḥ। svadhītā mānavaśreṣṭha satyamekaṃ kilaikataḥ॥03-61-16॥
[चत्वार (catvāra) - four; एकतो (ekataḥ) - from one side; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; साङ्गोपाङ्गाः (sāṅgopāṅgāḥ) - with limbs and sub-limbs; सविस्तराः (savistarāḥ) - detailed; स्वधीता (svadhītā) - self-studied; learned; मानवश्रेष्ठ (mānavaśreṣṭha) - best among men; सत्य (satya) - truth; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; किल (kila) - indeed; एकतः (ekataḥ) - from one side;]
(Four Vedas from one side, with limbs and sub-limbs, detailed, self-studied, O best among men, truth one indeed from one side.)
O best among men, the four Vedas, with all their ancillary and subsidiary parts, though learned thoroughly and explained in detail on one side, on the other side, truth alone is indeed one. (03-61-16)
तस्मादर्हसि शत्रुघ्न सत्यं कर्तुं नरेश्वर। उक्तवानसि यद्वीर मत्सकाशे पुरा वचः ॥०३-६१-१७॥
tasmād arhasi śatrughna satyaṃ kartuṃ nareśvara। uktavān asi yad vīra matsakāśe purā vacaḥ॥03-61-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; शत्रुघ्न (śatrughna) - Śatrughna; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O lord of men; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoken; असि (asi) - you are; यत् (yat) - which; वीर (vīra) - O hero; मत्सकाशे (matsakāśe) - in my presence; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वचः (vacaḥ) - word;]
(Therefore you ought, O Śatrughna, to do truth, O lord of men. What word you, O hero, spoke in my presence formerly.)
Therefore, O Śatrughna, you ought to fulfill your promise, O lord of men, the word that you, O hero, formerly spoke in my presence. (03-61-17)
हा वीर ननु नामाहमिष्टा किल तवानघ। अस्यामटव्यां घोरायां किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥०३-६१-१८॥
hā vīra nanu nāmāham iṣṭā kila tavānagha। asyām aṭavyāṃ ghorāyāṃ kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase॥03-61-18॥
[हा (hā) - alas; वीर (vīra) - hero; ननु (nanu) - surely; नाम (nām) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; इष्टा (iṣṭā) - dear; किल (kila) - certainly; तव (tava) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; अस्याम् (asyām) - in this; अटव्याम् (aṭavyām) - forest; घोरायाम् (ghorāyām) - terrible; किम् (kim) - why; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; प्रतिभाषसे (pratibhāṣase) - do you speak;]
(Alas, hero, surely indeed I am dear certainly to you, O sinless one. In this terrible forest, why do you not speak to me?)

भर्त्सयत्येष मां रौद्रो व्यात्तास्यो दारुणाकृतिः। अरण्यराट्क्षुधाविष्टः किं मां न त्रातुमर्हसि ॥०३-६१-१९॥
bhartsayatyeṣa māṃ raudro vyāttāsyo dāruṇākṛtiḥ। araṇyaraṭkṣudhāviṣṭaḥ kiṃ māṃ na trātumarhasi॥03-61-19॥
[भर्त्सयति (bhartsayati) - rebukes; reprimands; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); माम् (mām) - me; रौद्रः (raudraḥ) - fierce; व्यत्तास्यः (vyāttāsyaḥ) - with open mouth; दारुणाकृतिः (dāruṇākṛtiḥ) - terrible form; अरण्यराट् (araṇyaraṭ) - lord of the forest; क्षुधा-आविष्टः (kṣudhā-āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome by hunger; किम् (kim) - why; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(This fierce one with open mouth and terrible form rebukes me, the lord of the forest overcome by hunger. Why do you not protect me?)
This fierce one with an open mouth and terrible form, the lord of the forest overcome by hunger, rebukes me. Why do you not protect me? (03-61-19)
न मे त्वदन्या सुभगे प्रिया इत्यब्रवीस्तदा। तामृतां कुरु कल्याण पुरोक्तां भारतीं नृप ॥०३-६१-२०॥
na me tvadanyā subhage priyā ityabravīstadā। tāmṛtāṃ kuru kalyāṇa puroktāṃ bhāratīṃ nṛpa ॥03-61-20॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; त्वदन्या (tvadanyā) - other than you; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate one; प्रिया (priyā) - dear (one); इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; तदा (tadā) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; ऋतां (ṛtām) - truthful; कुरु (kuru) - make; कल्याण (kalyāṇa) - O auspicious one; पुरोक्तां (puroktāṃ) - previously spoken; भारतीं (bhāratīm) - speech; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Not my other than you, O fortunate one, dear (one)— thus he said then. Her truthful make, O auspicious one, the previously spoken speech, O king.)
He then said, "O fortunate one, no one is dear to me except you." O king, make that statement previously spoken, which is true, a reality.
उन्मत्तां विलपन्तीं मां भार्यामिष्टां नराधिप। ईप्सितामीप्सितो नाथ किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥०३-६१-२१॥
unmattāṃ vilapantīṃ māṃ bhāryāmiṣṭāṃ narādhipa। īpsitām īpsito nātha kiṃ māṃ na pratibhāṣase॥03-61-21॥

(Delirious, wailing me, wife dear, O king, desired, desired (by you), O lord, why me not do you address?)
O king, O lord, why do you not address me—me who am delirious, wailing, your dear wife, desired and beloved by you? (03-61-21)
कृशां दीनां विवर्णां च मलिनां वसुधाधिप। वस्त्रार्धप्रावृतामेकां विलपन्तीमनाथवत् ॥०३-६१-२२॥
kṛśāṃ dīnāṃ vivarṇāṃ ca malināṃ vasudhādhipa। vastrārdhaprāvṛtāmekāṃ vilapantīmanāthavat॥03-61-22॥

यूथभ्रष्टामिवैकां मां हरिणीं पृथुलोचन। न मानयसि मानार्ह रुदतीमरिकर्शन ॥०३-६१-२३॥
yūthabhraṣṭām ivaikāṃ māṃ hariṇīṃ pṛthulocana। na mānayasi mānārha rudatīm arikarṣaṇa ॥03-61-23॥

महाराज महारण्ये मामिहैकाकिनीं सतीम्। आभाषमाणां स्वां पत्नीं किं मां न प्रतिभाषसे ॥०३-६१-२४॥
mahārāja mahāraṇye mām ihai-kākinīṁ satīm। ābhāṣamāṇāṁ svāṁ patnīṁ kiṁ māṁ na pratibhāṣase ॥03-61-24॥
[महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; महारण्ये (mahāraṇye) - in the great forest; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; एकाकिनीम् (ekākinīm) - alone; सतीम् (satīm) - faithful wife; आभाषमाणाम् (ābhāṣamāṇām) - speaking; स्वाम् (svām) - own; पत्नीम् (patnīm) - wife; किम् (kim) - why; माम् (mām) - to me; न (na) - not; प्रतिभाषसे (pratibhāṣase) - do you reply;]
(Great king, in the great forest, me here alone, faithful wife, speaking, own wife, why to me do you not reply?)
O great king, in this vast forest, your faithful wife—I am here alone, speaking to you, your own wife; why do you not answer me? (03-61-24)
कुलशीलोपसम्पन्नं चारुसर्वाङ्गशोभनम्। नाद्य त्वामनुपश्यामि गिरावस्मिन्नरोत्तम ॥ वने चास्मिन्महाघोरे सिंहव्याघ्रनिषेविते ॥०३-६१-२५॥
kulashīlopasampannaṃ cārusarvāṅgaśobhanam। nādya tvāmanupaśyāmi girāvasminnarottama॥ vane cāsminmahāghore siṃhavyāghraniṣevi te॥03-61-25॥
[कुल-शील-उपसम्पन्नम् (kula-śīla-upasampannam) - endowed with noble family and good character; चारु-सर्वाङ्ग-शोभनम् (cāru-sarvāṅga-śobhanam) - graceful and possessing beautiful limbs; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुपश्यामि (anupaśyāmi) - I see; गिरौ (girau) - on this mountain; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; नर-उत्तम (nara-uttama) - O best of men; वने (vane) - in the forest; च (ca) - and; अस्मिन् (asmin) - this; महाघोरे (mahāghore) - very fearful; सिंह-व्याघ्र-निषेविते (siṃha-vyāghra-niṣevi te) - frequented by lions and tigers;]
(Endowed with noble family and good character, graceful and possessing beautiful limbs, not today you I see on this mountain, O best of men, and in this very fearful forest frequented by lions and tigers.)
O best of men, today I do not see you, who are endowed with noble family and character and whose every limb is beautiful, on this mountain and in this very fearful forest frequented by lions and tigers. (03-61-25)
शयानमुपविष्टं वा स्थितं वा निषधाधिप। प्रस्थितं वा नरश्रेष्ठ मम शोकविवर्धन ॥०३-६१-२६॥
śayānam upaviṣṭaṃ vā sthitaṃ vā niṣadhādhipa। prasthitaṃ vā naraśreṣṭha mama śoka-vivardhana ॥03-61-26॥
[शयानम् (śayānam) - lying down; उपविष्टं (upaviṣṭam) - sitting; वा (vā) - or; स्थितं (sthitaṃ) - standing; वा (vā) - or; निषधाधिप (niṣadhādhipa) - O ruler of Niṣadha; प्रस्थितं (prasthitaṃ) - departed; वा (vā) - or; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; मम (mama) - my; शोकविवर्धन (śoka-vivardhana) - increaser of sorrow;]
(O ruler of Niṣadha, whether lying down, sitting, or standing; or O best of men, whether departed, my increaser of sorrow.)
O ruler of Niṣadha, whether you lie down, sit, stand, or depart, O best of men, you are the cause of my ever-increasing sorrow. (03-61-26)
कं नु पृच्छामि दुःखार्ता त्वदर्थे शोककर्शिता। कच्चिद्दृष्टस्त्वयारण्ये सङ्गत्येह नलो नृपः ॥०३-६१-२७॥
kaṃ nu pṛcchāmi duḥkhārtā tvad-arthe śoka-karśitā। kaccid dṛṣṭas tvayā araṇye saṅgatya iha nalo nṛpaḥ॥03-61-27॥
[कं (kaṃ) - whom; नु (nu) - indeed; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted with sorrow; त्वदर्थे (tvad-arthe) - for your sake; शोककर्शिता (śoka-karśitā) - emaciated by grief; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; सङ्गत्य (saṅgatya) - having met; इह (iha) - here; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(Whom indeed I ask, afflicted with sorrow, for your sake, emaciated by grief. Whether seen by you in the forest, having met here, Nala the king.)
Afflicted with sorrow for your sake and emaciated by grief, whom indeed can I ask? Have you perhaps seen King Nala here in the forest after meeting him? (03-61-27)
को नु मे कथयेदद्य वनेऽस्मिन्विष्ठितं नलम्। अभिरूपं महात्मानं परव्यूहविनाशनम् ॥०३-६१-२८॥
ko nu me kathayed adya vane 'smin viṣṭhitaṃ nalam। abhirūpaṃ mahātmānaṃ paravyūhavināśanam ॥03-61-28॥
[को (ko) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; कथयेत् (kathayet) - would tell; अद्य (adya) - today; वने (vane) - in the forest; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; विष्ठितं (viṣṭhitaṃ) - residing; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; अभिरूपं (abhirūpaṃ) - handsome; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṃ) - great-souled; परव्यूहविनाशनम् (paravyūhavināśanam) - destroyer of enemy's troops;]
(Who indeed to me would tell today, in this forest, residing Nala, handsome, great-souled, destroyer of enemy's troops?)
Who indeed will tell me today of Nala, who is residing in this forest—he who is handsome, great-souled, and a destroyer of enemy forces? (03-61-28)
यमन्वेषसि राजानं नलं पद्मनिभेक्षणम्। अयं स इति कस्याद्य श्रोष्यामि मधुरां गिरम् ॥०३-६१-२९॥
yamanveṣasi rājānaṃ nalaṃ padmanibhekṣaṇam। ayaṃ sa iti kasyādya śroṣyāmi madhurāṃ giram॥03-61-29॥
[यम् (yam) - whom; अन्वेषसि (anveṣasi) - you seek; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; पद्मनिभेक्षणम् (padmanibhekṣaṇam) - lotus-eyed; अयम् (ayam) - this; स (sa) - he; इति (iti) - thus; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; आद्य (ādya) - today; श्रोष्यामि (śroṣyāmi) - I shall hear; मधुराम् (madhurām) - sweet; गिरम् (giram) - speech;]
(Whom you seek—the king Nala, lotus-eyed—"This is he" thus of whom today I shall hear sweet speech.)
Today, whose sweet speech shall I hear, saying: "This is he, the king Nala with lotus-like eyes, whom you seek?" (03-61-29)
अरण्यराडयं श्रीमांश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रो महाहनुः। शार्दूलोऽभिमुखः प्रैति पृच्छाम्येनमशङ्किता ॥०३-६१-३०॥
araṇyarāḍ ayaṃ śrīmāṃś caturdaṃṣṭro mahāhanuḥ। śārdūlo 'bhimukhaḥ praiti pṛcchāmy enam aśaṅkitā ॥03-61-30॥
[अरण्यराट् (araṇyarāṭ) - the lord of the forest; अयम् (ayam) - this; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - splendid; चतुर्दंष्ट्रः (caturdaṃṣṭraḥ) - one with four fangs; महाहनुः (mahāhanuḥ) - one with great jaws; शार्दूलः (śārdūlaḥ) - tiger; अभिमुखः (abhimukhaḥ) - facing (us); प्रैति (praiti) - comes; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; एनम् (enam) - him; अशङ्किता (aśaṅkitā) - without fear;]
(The lord of the forest, this splendid one with four fangs and great jaws, the tiger, facing (us), comes; I, without fear, ask him.)
This magnificent tiger, lord of the forest with four fangs and great jaws, is coming toward us; I will question him without fear. (03-61-30)
भवान्मृगाणामधिपस्त्वमस्मिन्कानने प्रभुः। विदर्भराजतनयां दमयन्तीति विद्धि माम् ॥०३-६१-३१॥
bhavān mṛgāṇām-adhipas tvam asmin kānane prabhuḥ। vidarbha-rāja-tanayāṃ damayantī iti viddhi mām ॥03-61-31॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - You; मृगाणाम् (mṛgāṇām) - of the deer; अधिपः (adhipaḥ) - lord; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; कानने (kānane) - forest; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; विदर्भराजतनयाम् (vidarbha-rāja-tanayām) - daughter of the king of Vidarbha; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me;]
(You, lord of the deer, you, in this forest, master. The daughter of the king of Vidarbha, Damayantī—thus, know me.)
You are the lord and master of the deer in this forest. Know me as Damayantī, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha. (03-61-31)
निषधाधिपतेर्भार्यां नलस्यामित्रघातिनः। पतिमन्वेषतीमेकां कृपणां शोककर्शिताम् ॥ आश्वासय मृगेन्द्रेह यदि दृष्टस्त्वया नलः ॥०३-६१-३२॥
niṣadhādhipaterbhāryāṁ nalasyāmitraghātinaḥ। patimanveṣatīmekāṁ kṛpaṇāṁ śokakarśitām॥ āśvāsaya mṛgendreha yadi dṛṣṭastvayā nalaḥ॥03-61-32॥
[निषधाधिपतेः (niṣadhādhipateḥ) - of the lord of Niṣadha; भार्यां (bhāryāṁ) - wife; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; अमित्रघातिनः (amitraghātinaḥ) - destroyer of enemies; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अन्वेषतीम् (anveṣatīm) - seeking; एकाम् (ekām) - alone; कृपणाम् (kṛpaṇām) - poor; शोककर्शिताम् (śokakarśitām) - emaciated by grief; आश्वासय (āśvāsaya) - comfort; मृगेन्द्र (mṛgendra) - O lion; इह (iha) - here; यदि (yadi) - if; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala;]
(Of the lord of Niṣadha's wife, of Nala, the destroyer of enemies, (who is) seeking her husband, alone, poor, emaciated by grief, comfort, O lion, here, if seen by you, Nala.)
O lion, if you have seen Nala, the destroyer of enemies and lord of Niṣadha, then comfort his wife, who is alone, poor, emaciated by grief and seeking her husband, here. (03-61-32)
अथ वारण्यनृपते नलं यदि न शंससि। मामदस्व मृगश्रेष्ठ विशोकां कुरु दुःखिताम् ॥०३-६१-३३॥
atha vāraṇya-nṛpate nalaṁ yadi na śaṁsasi। mām adasva mṛga-śreṣṭha viśokāṁ kuru duḥkhitām॥03-61-33॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वारण्यनृपते (vāraṇya-nṛpate) - O king of the forest; नलं (nalaṁ) - Nala; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; शंससि (śaṁsasi) - you declare; माम् (mām) - me; अदस्व (adasva) - devour; मृगश्रेष्ठ (mṛga-śreṣṭha) - O best of deer; विशोकाम् (viśokām) - free from grief; कुरु (kuru) - make; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - sorrowful;]
(Then, O king of the forest, Nala, if you do not declare, devour me, O best of deer, make sorrowful me free from grief.)
Then, O king of the forest, if you do not tell me about Nala, devour me, O best of deer, and end the grief of one who is sorrowful. (03-61-33)
श्रुत्वारण्ये विलपितं ममैष मृगराट्स्वयम्। यात्येतां मृष्टसलिलामापगां सागरङ्गमाम् ॥०३-६१-३४॥
śrutvāraṇye vilapitaṃ mama eṣa mṛgarāṭ svayam। yāty etāṃ mṛṣṭa-salilām āpagāṃ sāgara-aṅgamām ॥03-61-34॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) (śrutvā) - having heard; अरण्ये (araṇye) (araṇye) - in the forest; विलपितं (vilapitam) (vilapitaṃ) - lamenting; मम (mama) (mama) - my; एष (eṣa) (eṣa) - this; मृगराट् (mṛgarāṭ) (mṛgarāṭ) - king of deer; स्वयम् (svayam) (svayam) - himself; याति (yāti) (yāti) - goes; एताम् (etām) (etām) - this; मृष्टसलिलाम् (mṛṣṭa-salilām) (mṛṣṭa-salilām) - pure-watered; आपगाम् (āpagām) (āpagām) - river; सागरङ्गमाम् (sāgara-aṅgamām) (sāgara-aṅgamām) - flowing to the ocean;]
(Having heard in the forest the lamenting of mine, this king of deer himself goes to this pure-watered river flowing to the ocean.)
Hearing my lament in the forest, this king of deer himself is approaching this clear-watered river which flows into the ocean. (03-61-34)
इमं शिलोच्चयं पुण्यं शृङ्गैर्बहुभिरुच्छ्रितैः। विराजद्भिर्दिवस्पृग्भिर्नैकवर्णैर्मनोरमैः ॥०३-६१-३५॥
imaṁ śilocchayaṁ puṇyaṁ śṛṅgair bahubhir ucchritaiḥ। virājadbhir divaspṛgbhir naika-varṇair manoramaiḥ ॥03-61-35॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this; शिलोच्चयं (śilocchayaṁ) - rocky mass; पुण्यं (puṇyaṁ) - auspicious; शृङ्गैः (śṛṅgaiḥ) - with peaks; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; उच्छ्रितैः (ucchritaiḥ) - lofty; विराजद्भिः (virājadbhiḥ) - shining; दिवस्पृग्भिः (divaspṛgbhiḥ) - touching the sky; नैकवर्णैः (naika-varṇaiḥ) - with many colors; मनोरमैः (manoramaiḥ) - charming;]
(This rocky mass auspicious with peaks many lofty, shining, sky-touching, many-colored, charming.)
Behold this auspicious rocky mass adorned with many lofty peaks, shining, sky-touching, resplendent in many colors and charming. (03-61-35)
नानाधातुसमाकीर्णं विविधोपलभूषितम्। अस्यारण्यस्य महतः केतुभूतमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥०३-६१-३६॥
nānā-dhātu-samākīrṇaṁ vividhopala-bhūṣitam। asyāraṇyasya mahataḥ ketu-bhūtam-iva-ucchritam ॥03-61-36॥
[नाना (nānā) - various; धातु (dhātu) - minerals; समाकीर्णम् (samākīrṇam) - covered; विविध (vividha) - of many kinds; उपल (upala) - stones; भूषितम् (bhūṣitam) - adorned; अस्य (asya) - of this; अरण्यस्य (araṇyasya) - of forest; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; केतु (kētu) - banner; भूतम् (bhūtam) - become; इव (iva) - as if; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - towering;]
(Covered with various minerals, adorned with stones of many kinds, as if towering like a banner of this great forest.)

सिंहशार्दूलमातङ्गवराहर्क्षमृगायुतम्। पतत्रिभिर्बहुविधैः समन्तादनुनादितम् ॥०३-६१-३७॥
siṃha-śārdūla-mātaṅga-varāha-ṛkṣa-mṛga-ayutam। patatribhiḥ bahu-vidhaiḥ samantāt anunāditam ॥03-61-37॥
[सिंह (siṃha) - lion; शार्दूल (śārdūla) - tiger; मातङ्ग (mātaṅga) - elephant; वराह (varāha) - boar; ऋक्ष (ṛkṣa) - bear; मृग (mṛga) - deer; आयुतम् (ayutam) - endowed with; filled with; पतत्रिभिः (patatribhiḥ) - by birds; बहुविधैः (bahu-vidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; अनुनादितम् (anunāditam) - echoed; resounded;]

किंशुकाशोकबकुलपुंनागैरुपशोभितम्। सरिद्भिः सविहङ्गाभिः शिखरैश्चोपशोभितम् ॥ गिरिराजमिमं तावत्पृच्छामि नृपतिं प्रति ॥०३-६१-३८॥
kiṃśukāśokabakulapuṃnāgair upaśobhitam। saridbhiḥ savihaṅgābhiḥ śikharaiś copaśobhitam ॥ girirājam imaṃ tāvat pṛcchāmi nṛpatiṃ prati ॥03-61-38॥
[किंशुकाशोकबकुलपुंनागैः (kiṃśukāśokabakulapuṃnāgaiḥ) - by kimśuka, aśoka, bakula, puṃnāga trees; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; सरिद्भिः (saridbhiḥ) - by rivers; सविहङ्गाभिः (savihaṅgābhiḥ) - together with birds; शिखरैः (śikharaiḥ) - by peaks; च (ca) - and; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; गिरिराजम् (girirājam) - mountain-king; इमम् (imam) - this; तावत् (tāvat) - now; पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - king; प्रतिः (prati) - regarding;]

भगवन्नचलश्रेष्ठ दिव्यदर्शन विश्रुत। शरण्य बहुकल्याण नमस्तेऽस्तु महीधर ॥०३-६१-३९॥
bhagavan-nacalaśreṣṭha divyadarśana viśruta। śaraṇya bahukalyāṇa namaste'stu mahīdhara ॥03-61-39॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; अचलश्रेष्ठ (acalaśreṣṭha) - the best among mountains; दिव्यदर्शन (divyadarśana) - of divine appearance; विश्रुत (viśruta) - renowned; शरण्य (śaraṇya) - refuge-giving; बहुकल्याण (bahukalyāṇa) - abundant in auspiciousness; नमस्तेऽस्तु (namaste'stu) - salutations be [to you]; महीधर (mahīdhara) - O mountain-holder;]

सम्यग्गोप्ता विदर्भाणां निर्जितारिगणः प्रभुः। तस्य मां विद्धि तनयां भगवंस्त्वामुपस्थिताम् ॥०३-६१-४४॥
samyaggoptā vidarbhāṇāṃ nirjitārigaṇaḥ prabhuḥ। tasya māṃ viddhi tanayāṃ bhagavaṃstvāmupasthitām ॥03-61-44॥

निषधेषु महाशैल श्वशुरो मे नृपोत्तमः। सुगृहीतनामा विख्यातो वीरसेन इति स्म ह ॥०३-६१-४५॥
niṣadheṣu mahāśaila śvaśuro me nṛpottamaḥ। sugṛhītanāmā vikhyāto vīrasena iti sma ha ॥03-61-45॥

तस्य राज्ञः सुतो वीरः श्रीमान्सत्यपराक्रमः। क्रमप्राप्तं पितुः स्वं यो राज्यं समनुशास्ति ह ॥०३-६१-४६॥

यष्टा दाता च योद्धा च सम्यक्चैव प्रशासिता। तस्य मामचलश्रेष्ठ विद्धि भार्यामिहागताम् ॥०३-६१-४८॥
yaṣṭā dātā ca yoddhā ca samyakcaiva praśāsitā। tasya mām acalaśreṣṭha viddhi bhāryām ihāgatām॥03-61-48॥

त्यक्तश्रियं भर्तृहीनामनाथां व्यसनान्विताम्। अन्वेषमाणां भर्तारं तं वै नरवरोत्तमम् ॥०३-६१-४९॥
tyaktaśriyaṃ bhartṛhīnām anāthāṃ vyasanānvitām। anveṣamāṇāṃ bhartāraṃ taṃ vai naravarottamam ॥03-61-49॥

खमुल्लिखद्भिरेतैर्हि त्वया शृङ्गशतैर्नृपः। कच्चिद्दृष्टोऽचलश्रेष्ठ वनेऽस्मिन्दारुणे नलः ॥०३-६१-५०॥
khamullikhadbhiretair hi tvayā śṛṅgaśatair nṛpaḥ। kacciddṛṣṭo'calaśreṣṭha vane'smindāruṇe nalaḥ ॥03-61-50॥

(O best of mountains, by these (animals) who scratch the sky with hundreds of horns, has the king Nala indeed been seen by you in this terrible forest?)
O best of mountains, have you by chance seen King Nala here in this terrible forest, among these creatures that scratch the sky with their hundreds of horns? (03-61-50)
गजेन्द्रविक्रमो धीमान्दीर्घबाहुरमर्षणः। विक्रान्तः सत्यवाग्धीरो भर्ता मम महायशाः ॥ निषधानामधिपतिः कच्चिद्दृष्टस्त्वया नलः ॥०३-६१-५१॥
gajendravaikramo dhīmāndīrghabāhur amarṣaṇaḥ। vikrāntaḥ satyavāgdhīro bhartā mama mahāyaśāḥ॥ niṣadhānām-adhipatiḥ kaccid dṛṣṭas tvayā nalaḥ॥03-61-51॥

(Having the valor of an elephant-king, intelligent, long-armed, impatient of insult, valiant, truth-speaking, steadfast, husband my very famous; of the Niṣadhas lord, whether seen by you Nala?)
Has Nala, the lord of the Niṣadhas, my husband who is as valorous as an elephant-king, intelligent, long-armed, unenduring of insult, valiant, truthful, steadfast, and highly renowned, been seen by you? (03-61-51)
किं मां विलपतीमेकां पर्वतश्रेष्ठ दुःखिताम्। गिरा नाश्वासयस्यद्य स्वां सुतामिव दुःखिताम् ॥०३-६१-५२॥
kiṁ māṁ vilapatīm ekāṁ parvataśreṣṭha duḥkhitām। girā nāśvāsayasy adya svāṁ sutām iva duḥkhitām॥03-61-52॥
[किं (kiṁ) - why; माम् (mām) - me; विलपतीम् (vilapatīm) - lamenting; एकाम् (ekām) - alone; पर्वतश्रेष्ठ (parvataśreṣṭha) - O best of mountains; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - distressed; गिरा (girā) - with words; न (na) - not; आश्वासयस्य् (āśvāsayasi) - do you comfort; अद्य (adya) - today; स्वाम् (svām) - your own; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; इव (iva) - like; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - unhappy;]
(Why me lamenting alone O best of mountains distressed with words not do you comfort today your own daughter like unhappy.)
O best of mountains, why do you not comfort me, who am lamenting alone and distressed, with your words today, as you would your own unhappy daughter? (03-61-52)
वीर विक्रान्त धर्मज्ञ सत्यसन्ध महीपते। यद्यस्यस्मिन्वने राजन्दर्शयात्मानमात्मना ॥०३-६१-५३॥
vīra vikrānta dharmajña satyasaṅdha mahīpate। yady asmin vane rājan darśaya ātmānam ātmanā॥03-61-53॥
[वीर (vīra) - hero; विक्रान्त (vikrānta) - valorous; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; सत्यसन्ध (satyasaṅdha) - truthful; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वने (vane) - forest; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दर्शय (darśaya) - show; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by yourself;]
(Hero, valorous, knower of dharma, truthful, O lord of the earth! If in this forest, O king, show yourself by yourself.)
O hero, brave and knowledgeable of dharma, steadfast in truth, lord of the earth! If you are in this forest, O king, reveal yourself by your own power. (03-61-53)
कदा नु स्निग्धगम्भीरां जीमूतस्वनसंनिभाम्। श्रोष्यामि नैषधस्याहं वाचं ताममृतोपमाम् ॥०३-६१-५४॥
kadā nu snigdhagambhīrāṃ jīmūtasvana-saṃnibhām। śroṣyāmi naiṣadhasya ahaṃ vācaṃ tām amṛtopamām॥03-61-54॥
[कदा (kadā) - when; नु (nu) - indeed; स्निग्धगम्भीराम् (snigdhagambhīrām) - affectionate and deep; जीमूतस्वनसंनिभाम् (jīmūtasvana-saṃnibhām) - like the sound of clouds; श्रोष्यामि (śroṣyāmi) - shall I hear; नैषधस्य (naiṣadhasya) - of Nala (the king of Niṣadha); अहम् (ahaṃ) - I; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; ताम् (tām) - that; अमृतोपमाम् (amṛto-pamām) - like nectar;]
(When indeed affectionate and deep, like the sound of clouds, shall I hear the speech of Nala, I, that (speech) like nectar?)
When indeed will I hear the gentle and deep speech of Nala, resembling the sound of clouds, that (speech) which is like nectar? (03-61-54)
वैदर्भीत्येव कथितां शुभां राज्ञो महात्मनः। आम्नायसारिणीमृद्धां मम शोकनिबर्हिणीम् ॥०३-६१-५५॥
vaidarbhyety eva kathitāṁ śubhāṁ rājño mahātmanaḥ। āmnāyasāriṇīm ṛddhāṁ mama śoka-nibarhiṇīm॥03-61-55॥
[वैदर्भीत्या (vaidarbhyā) - by the lady of Vidarbha; एव (eva) - indeed; कथितां (kathitām) - spoken; शुभां (śubhām) - auspicious; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; आम्नायसारिणीम् (āmnāyasāriṇīm) - stream of tradition; ऋद्धाम् (ṛddhām) - prosperous; मम (mama) - my; शोकनिबर्हिणीम् (śoka-nibarhiṇīm) - remover of sorrow;]
(By the lady of Vidarbha indeed spoken auspicious of the king great-souled, stream of tradition prosperous, my remover of sorrow.)

इति सा तं गिरिश्रेष्ठमुक्त्वा पार्थिवनन्दिनी। दमयन्ती ततो भूयो जगाम दिशमुत्तराम् ॥०३-६१-५६॥
iti sā taṃ giriśreṣṭham uktvā pārthivanandinī। damayantī tato bhūyo jagāma diśam uttarām ॥03-61-56॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; तं (taṃ) - him; गिरिश्रेष्ठम् (giriśreṣṭham) - the supreme among mountains; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; पार्थिवनन्दिनी (pārthivanandinī) - daughter of the king; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; जगाम (jagāma) - went; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; उत्तराम् (uttarām) - northern;]
(Thus she, having spoken to him, to the supreme among mountains, the daughter of the king, Damayantī then again went (to the) northern direction.)
Thus, having addressed the best of mountains, Damayantī, the king's daughter, again proceeded to the northern direction. (03-61-56)
सा गत्वा त्रीनहोरात्रान्ददर्श परमाङ्गना। तापसारण्यमतुलं दिव्यकाननदर्शनम् ॥०३-६१-५७॥
sā gatvā trīn ahorātrān dadarśa paramāṅganā। tāpasāraṇyam atulaṃ divya-kānana-darśanam ॥03-61-57॥
[सा (sā) - she; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; अहोरात्रान् (ahorātrān) - days and nights; ददर्श (dadarśa) - she saw; परमाङ्गना (paramāṅganā) - the excellent lady; तापसारण्यम् (tāpasāraṇyam) - ascetics' forest; अतुलम् (atulaṃ) - incomparable; दिव्यकाननदर्शनम् (divya-kānana-darśanam) - having a vision of a divine forest;]
(She, having gone three days and nights, the excellent lady saw the ascetics' forest, incomparable, having a vision of a divine forest.)
After traveling for three days and nights, the excellent lady saw the ascetics' forest, remarkable and with the appearance of a divine grove. (03-61-57)
वसिष्ठभृग्वत्रिसमैस्तापसैरुपशोभितम्। नियतैः संयताहारैर्दमशौचसमन्वितैः ॥०३-६१-५८॥
vasiṣṭhabhṛgvatrisamaistāpasairupaśobhitam। niyataiḥ saṁyatāhārairdamaśaucasamanvitaiḥ ॥03-61-58॥
[वसिष्ठ (vasiṣṭha) - Vasiṣṭha; (the sage) भृग्वत्रिसमैः (bhṛgvatrisamaiḥ) - equal to Bhṛgu and Atri; (with sages) तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by ascetics; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; नियतैः (niyataiḥ) - restrained; संयताहारैः (saṁyatāhāraiḥ) - with controlled diet; दम (dama) - with self-restraint; शौच (śauca) - with purity; समन्वितैः (samanvitaiḥ) - endowed;]

abbhakṣair vāyu-bhakṣaiś ca patrāhārais tathā eva ca। jitendriyaiḥ mahābhāgaiḥ svarga-mārga-didṛkṣubhiḥ ॥03-61-59॥

[सा (sā) - she; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having greeted; तपःवृद्धान् (tapo-vṛddhān) - aged in austerity; विनयावनता (vinayāvanatā) - bent with modesty; स्थिता (sthitā) - standing; स्वागतं (svāgatam) - "welcome!"; ते (te) - to you; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - was addressed; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by the ascetics; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she;]
(She, having greeted the elders in austerity, (and) bent with modesty, stood. "Welcome to you!" thus was addressed by all those ascetics and she.)

(And worship of him, having performed according to propriety, there the ascetics (whose wealth is penance) said, "Be seated"; then they said, "Tell, what shall we do?" (03-61-65))

(She said, O woman of noble form, whether here among the venerable ones, in ascetic fires, in duties, among animals and birds, and O sinless ones, is there well-being for you, greatly fortunate ones, and in observance of your own duties.)
She (the noble lady) said: O most blessed ones, is everything well with you—here among the venerable sages, with the sacrificial fires, in your duties, among animals and birds, and in the observance of your own prescribed duties? (03-61-66)
तैरुक्ता कुशलं भद्रे सर्वत्रेति यशस्विनी। ब्रूहि सर्वानवद्याङ्गि का त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥०३-६१-६७॥
tairuktā kuśalaṃ bhadre sarvatreti yaśasvinī। brūhi sarvānavadyāṅgi kā tvaṃ kiṃ ca cikīrṣasi॥03-61-67॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; उक्ता (uktā) - addressed; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - well-being; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious lady; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; इति (iti) - thus; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious lady; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अवद्याङ्गि (avadyāṅgi) - faultless-limbed lady; का (kā) - who; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; किम् (kim) - what; च (ca) - and; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - intend to do;]
(By them addressed, "Is all well, O auspicious lady, everywhere?" the illustrious lady (was asked). Speak to all, O faultless-limbed lady, who are you, what and why do you intend?)
Addressed by them, the illustrious lady was asked: "Are you well everywhere, O auspicious one?" Speak to all, O faultless-limbed lady—who are you and what do you intend to do? (03-61-67)
दृष्ट्वैव ते परं रूपं द्युतिं च परमामिह। विस्मयो नः समुत्पन्नः समाश्वसिहि मा शुचः ॥०३-६१-६८॥
dṛṣṭvaiva te paraṃ rūpaṃ dyutiṃ ca paramām iha. vismayo naḥ samutpannaḥ samāśvasihi mā śucaḥ ॥03-61-68॥
[दृष्ट्वैव (dṛṣṭvaiva) - having just seen; only after seeing; ते (te) - your; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; रूपं (rūpam) - form; द्युतिं (dyutim) - splendor; च (ca) - and; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; इह (iha) - here; विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) - astonishment; नः (naḥ) - our; समुत्पन्नः (samutpannaḥ) - has arisen; समाश्वसिहि (samāśvasihi) - be consoled; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve;]
(Having just seen your supreme form and supreme splendor here, astonishment in us has arisen; be consoled, do not grieve.)
Just after seeing your supreme form and splendor here, we became astonished; take heart—do not grieve. (03-61-68)
अस्यारण्यस्य महती देवता वा महीभृतः। अस्या नु नद्याः कल्याणि वद सत्यमनिन्दिते ॥०३-६१-६९॥
asyāraṇyasya mahatī devatā vā mahībhṛtaḥ। asyā nu nadyāḥ kalyāṇi vada satyamanindite॥03-61-69॥

O auspicious and blameless one, is there a great deity of this forest or the mountains? Or is it of this river? Tell the truth. (03-61-69)
साब्रवीत्तानृषीन्नाहमरण्यस्यास्य देवता। न चाप्यस्य गिरेर्विप्रा न नद्या देवताप्यहम् ॥०३-६१-७०॥
sābravīttān ṛṣīn nāham araṇyasya asya devatā। na ca api asya gireḥ viprā na nadyā devatā api aham ॥03-61-70॥
[साब्रवीत् (sābravīt) - she said; तान् (tān) - to them; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; अरण्यस्य (araṇyasya) - of the forest; अस्य (asya) - of this; देवता (devatā) - goddess; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - of this; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - O brahmins; न (na) - not; नद्या (nadyā) - of the river; देवता (devatā) - goddess; अपि (api) - also; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(She said to those sages, I am not the goddess of this forest, nor O brahmins, am I of this mountain, nor also am I the goddess of the river.)

मानुषीं मां विजानीत यूयं सर्वे तपोधनाः। विस्तरेणाभिधास्यामि तन्मे शृणुत सर्वशः ॥०३-६१-७१॥
mānuṣīṃ māṃ vijānīta yūyaṃ sarve tapodhanāḥ। vistareṇābhidhāsyāmi tanme śṛṇuta sarvaśaḥ॥03-61-71॥

You ascetics, all of you, should know me as human. I shall tell you that in detail, so listen to me completely. (03-61-71)
विदर्भेषु महीपालो भीमो नाम महाद्युतिः। तस्य मां तनयां सर्वे जानीत द्विजसत्तमाः ॥०३-६१-७२॥
vidarbheṣu mahīpālo bhīmo nāma mahādyutiḥ। tasya māṁ tanayāṁ sarve jānīta dvijasattamāḥ॥03-61-72॥

निषधाधिपतिर्धीमान्नलो नाम महायशाः। वीरः सङ्ग्रामजिद्विद्वान्मम भर्ता विशां पतिः ॥०३-६१-७३॥
niṣadhādhipatirdhīmān nalo nāma mahāyaśāḥ। vīraḥ saṅgrāmajidvidvān mama bhartā viśāṃ patiḥ ॥03-61-73॥
[निषधाधिपतिः (niṣadhādhipatiḥ) - lord of Niṣadha; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नाम (nāma) - named; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; सङ्ग्रामजित् (saṅgrāmajit) - conqueror in battle; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned; मम (mama) - my; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; विशां (viśām) - of peoples; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;]

सत्यवाग्धर्मवित्प्राज्ञः सत्यसन्धोऽरिमर्दनः। ब्रह्मण्यो दैवतपरः श्रीमान्परपुरञ्जयः ॥०३-६१-७५॥
satyavāg dharmavit prājñaḥ satyasandho'rimardanaḥ। brahmaṇyo daivataparaḥ śrīmān parapurañjayaḥ॥03-61-75॥

नलो नाम नृपश्रेष्ठो देवराजसमद्युतिः। मम भर्ता विशालाक्षः पूर्णेन्दुवदनोऽरिहा ॥०३-६१-७६॥
nalo nāma nṛpaśreṣṭho devarājasamadyutiḥ। mama bhartā viśālākṣaḥ pūrṇenduvadanorihā ॥03-61-76॥

āhartā kratumukhyānāṃ vedavedāṅgapāragḥ। sapatnānāṃ mṛdhe hantā ravisomasamaprabhaḥ ॥03-61-77॥

स कैश्चिन्निकृतिप्रज्ञैरकल्याणैर्नराधमैः। आहूय पृथिवीपालः सत्यधर्मपरायणः ॥ देवने कुशलैर्जिह्मैर्जितो राज्यं वसूनि च ॥०३-६१-७८॥
sa kaiścin-nikṛti-prajñair-akalyāṇair-narādhamaiḥ। āhūya pṛthivīpālaḥ satyadharma-parāyaṇaḥ॥ devane kuśalaiḥ jihmaiḥ jito rājyaṃ vasūni ca॥03-61-78॥

(He, by certain who are skilled in deceit, malevolent, vilest of men, having been called, the king devoted to truth and righteousness, in play by skilled and deceitful persons, was defeated—kingdom and treasures too.)

सा वनानि गिरींश्चैव सरांसि सरितस्तथा। पल्वलानि च रम्याणि तथारण्यानि सर्वशः ॥०३-६१-८०॥
sā vanāni girīṁś caiva sarāṁsi saritas tathā। palvalāni ca ramyāṇi tathāraṇyāni sarvaśaḥ॥03-61-80॥

(She forests mountains indeed and lakes rivers also, ponds and beautiful also wildlands everywhere.)
She wandered through forests, mountains, lakes, rivers, and also ponds, as well as all beautiful and wild regions everywhere. (03-61-80)
अन्वेषमाणा भर्तारं नलं रणविशारदम्। महात्मानं कृतास्त्रं च विचरामीह दुःखिता ॥०३-६१-८१॥
anveṣamāṇā bhartāraṃ nalaṃ raṇaviśāradam। mahātmānaṃ kṛtāstraṃ ca vicarāmīha duḥkhitā ॥03-61-81॥

कच्चिद्भगवतां पुण्यं तपोवनमिदं नृपः। भवेत्प्राप्तो नलो नाम निषधानां जनाधिपः ॥०३-६१-८२॥
kaccid bhagavatāṁ puṇyaṁ tapovanam idaṁ nṛpaḥ। bhavet prāpto nalo nāma niṣadhānāṁ janādhipaḥ॥03-61-82॥

यत्कृतेऽहमिदं विप्राः प्रपन्ना भृशदारुणम्। वनं प्रतिभयं घोरं शार्दूलमृगसेवितम् ॥०३-६१-८३॥
yat-kṛte’ham idaṃ viprāḥ prapannā bhṛśa-dāruṇam। vanaṃ pratibhayam ghoraṃ śārdūla-mṛga-sevitam ॥03-61-83॥

(For whose sake, I, O Brāhmaṇas, have come to this extremely severe, towards danger terrible forest frequented by tigers and deer.)
O Brāhmaṇas, for whose sake I have come to this extremely dreadful and dangerous forest frequented by tigers and deer. (03-61-83)
यदि कैश्चिदहोरात्रैर्न द्रक्ष्यामि नलं नृपम्। आत्मानं श्रेयसा योक्ष्ये देहस्यास्य विमोचनात् ॥०३-६१-८४॥
yadi kaiścidahorātrair na drakṣyāmi nalaṃ nṛpam। ātmānaṃ śreyasā yokṣye dehasyasya vimocanāt ॥03-61-84॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; कैश्चिदहोरात्रैः (kaiścidahorātraiḥ) - within a few days and nights; न (na) - not; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - I shall see; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - myself; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - by better (means); योक्ष्ये (yokṣye) - I shall unite; देहस्य (dehasya) - of this body; अस्य (asya) - of this; विमोचनात् (vimocanāt) - by the release;]
(If within a few days and nights I do not see Nala the king, myself I shall unite with a better state by the release of this body.)
If, within a few days and nights, I do not see King Nala, I shall seek a better state by ending this body. (03-61-84)
को नु मे जीवितेनार्थस्तमृते पुरुषर्षभम्। कथं भविष्याम्यद्याहं भर्तृशोकाभिपीडिता ॥०३-६१-८५॥
ko nu me jīvitena-arthas-tam ṛte puruṣarṣabham। kathaṃ bhaviṣyāmy adyāhaṃ bhartṛśokābhipīḍitā॥03-61-85॥

एवं विलपतीमेकामरण्ये भीमनन्दिनीम्। दमयन्तीमथोचुस्ते तापसाः सत्यवादिनः ॥०३-६१-८६॥
evaṁ vilapatīm ekām araṇye bhīma-nandinīm। damayantīm atha ūcuḥ te tāpasāḥ satya-vā-dinaḥ॥03-61-86॥

उदर्कस्तव कल्याणि कल्याणो भविता शुभे। वयं पश्याम तपसा क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि नैषधम् ॥०३-६१-८७॥
udarkas tava kalyāṇi kalyāṇo bhavitā śubhe। vayaṃ paśyāma tapasā kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi naiṣadham ॥03-61-87॥
[उदर्कः (udarkaḥ) - result; (future outcome); तव (tava) - your (of you); कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one (address to a female); कल्याणः (kalyāṇaḥ) - auspicious; (good, beneficial); भविता (bhavitā) - will become; (will be); शुभे (śubhe) - O blessed one; (address to a female); वयम् (vayaṃ) - we; पश्याम (paśyāma) - see; (perceive); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; (by penance); क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; (soon); द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; नैषधम् (naiṣadham) - Nala; (the king of Niṣadha);]
(The result your, O auspicious one, auspicious will become, O blessed one. We see by austerity, quickly you will see Nala.)
O auspicious one, your result will be auspicious, O blessed lady. We see that by your penance, you will soon see Nala. (03-61-87)
निषधानामधिपतिं नलं रिपुनिघातिनम्। भैमि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं द्रक्ष्यसे विगतज्वरम् ॥०३-६१-८८॥
niṣadhānām-adhipatiṃ nalaṃ ripu-nighātinam। bhaimi dharma-bhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ drakṣyase vigata-jvaram ॥03-61-88॥

O daughter of Bhīma, you will see Nala, the lord of the Niṣadhas, the destroyer of enemies, and the best among the upholders of dharma, free from distress. (03-61-88)
विमुक्तं सर्वपापेभ्यः सर्वरत्नसमन्वितम्। तदेव नगरश्रेष्ठं प्रशासन्तमरिंदमम् ॥०३-६१-८९॥
vimuktaṁ sarvapāpebhyaḥ sarvaratnasamanvitam। tadeva nagaraśreṣṭhaṁ praśāsantamariṁdamam ॥03-61-89॥
[विमुक्तं (vimuktaṁ) - freed; (from); सर्वपापेभ्यः (sarvapāpebhyaḥ) - from all sins; सर्वरत्नसमन्वितम् (sarvaratnasamanvitam) - endowed with all jewels; तदेव (tadeva) - that very (place); नगरश्रेष्ठं (nagaraśreṣṭham) - the foremost among cities; प्रशासन्तम् (praśāsantam) - ruling; अरिंदमम् (ariṁdamam) - the subduer of enemies;]

द्विषतां भयकर्तारं सुहृदां शोकनाशनम्। पतिं द्रक्ष्यसि कल्याणि कल्याणाभिजनं नृपम् ॥०३-६१-९०॥
dviṣatāṃ bhayakartāraṃ suhṛdāṃ śokanāśanam। patiṃ drakṣyasi kalyāṇi kalyāṇābhijanaṃ nṛpam॥03-61-90॥

O auspicious lady, you will see your husband, the king of noble birth, who is a cause of fear for his enemies and remover of sorrow for his friends. (03-61-90)
एवमुक्त्वा नलस्येष्टां महिषीं पार्थिवात्मजाम्। अन्तर्हितास्तापसास्ते साग्निहोत्राश्रमास्तदा ॥०३-६१-९१॥
evam-uktvā nalasya iṣṭāṃ mahiṣīṃ pārthivātmajām। antarhitās tāpasās te sāgnihotra-aśramās tadā॥03-61-91॥
[एवं (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; इष्टां (iṣṭāṃ) - beloved; महिषीं (mahiṣīṃ) - queen; पार्थिवात्मजाम् (pārthivātmajām) - princess (daughter of a king); अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - became invisible; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; ते (te) - they; साग्निहोत्राश्रमाः (sāgnihotrāśramāḥ) - with their hermitages maintained by sacred fire; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having spoken to Nala’s beloved queen, the princess, those ascetics, together with their hermitages maintained by sacred fire, then became invisible.)
After saying this to Nala’s beloved queen, the princess, those ascetics with their hermitages and sacred fires at that time disappeared from sight. (03-61-91)
सा दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं विस्मिता अभवत्तदा। दमयन्त्यनवद्याङ्गी वीरसेननृपस्नुषा ॥०३-६१-९२॥
sā dṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ vismitā abhavattadā। damayantyanavadyāṅgī vīrasenanṛpasnuṣā ॥03-61-92॥
[सा (sā) - she; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महदाश्चर्यं (mahadāścaryam) - great wonder; विस्मिता (vismitā) - astonished; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; दमयन्त्यनवद्याङ्गी (damayanty-anavadyāṅgī) - Damayantī, flawless-limbed; वीरसेननृपस्नुषा (vīrasena-nṛpasnuṣā) - daughter-in-law of King Vīrasena;]

किं नु स्वप्नो मया दृष्टः कोऽयं विधिरिहाभवत्। क्व नु ते तापसाः सर्वे क्व तदाश्रममण्डलम् ॥०३-६१-९३॥
kiṁ nu svapno mayā dṛṣṭaḥ ko'yaṁ vidhirihābhavat। kva nu te tāpasāḥ sarve kva tadāśramamaṇḍalam ॥03-61-93॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; स्वप्नः (svapnaḥ) - dream; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; कः (kaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - fate; इह (iha) - here; अभवत् (abhavat) - happened; क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; ते (te) - those; तापसाः (tāpasāḥ) - ascetics; सर्वे (sarve) - all; क्व (kva) - where; तत् (tat) - that; आश्रममण्डलम् (āśramamaṇḍalam) - hermitage circle;]
(What indeed dream by me seen? Who this fate here happened? Where indeed those ascetics all? Where that hermitage circle?)
Was it just a dream that I saw? What fate has occurred here? Where have all the ascetics gone? Where is that circle of hermitages? (03-61-93)
क्व सा पुण्यजला रम्या नानाद्विजनिषेविता। नदी ते च नगा हृद्याः फलपुष्पोपशोभिताः ॥०३-६१-९४॥
kva sā puṇyajalā ramyā nānā-dvija-niṣevitā। nadī te ca nagā hṛdyāḥ phala-puṣpa-upa-śobhitāḥ॥03-61-94॥
[क्व (kva) - where; सा (sā) - that (feminine); पुण्यजला (puṇyajalā) - sacred-watered; रम्या (ramyā) - beautiful; नानाद्विजनिषेविता (nānā-dvija-niṣevitā) - attended by many birds; नदी (nadī) - river; ते (te) - your; च (ca) - and; नगा (nagāḥ) - trees; हृद्याः (hṛdyāḥ) - pleasing; फलपुष्पोपशोभिताः (phala-puṣpa-upa-śobhitāḥ) - adorned with fruits and flowers;]
(Where that sacred-watered, beautiful, attended by many birds river? Your and trees pleasing adorned with fruits and flowers.)
Where is that beautiful, sacred-watered river attended by many birds? And where are your lovely trees, pleasing and adorned with fruits and flowers? (03-61-94)
ध्यात्वा चिरं भीमसुता दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता। भर्तृशोकपरा दीना विवर्णवदनाभवत् ॥०३-६१-९५॥
dhyātvā ciraṃ bhīmasutā damayantī śucismitā। bhartṛśokaparā dīnā vivarṇavadanābhavat ॥03-61-95॥
[ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; भीमसुता (bhīmasutā) - the daughter of Bhīma; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; शुचिस्मिता (śucismitā) - she of pure smile; भर्तृशोकपरा (bhartṛśokaparā) - absorbed in grief for her husband; दीना (dīnā) - miserable; विवर्णवदना (vivarṇavadanā) - with pale face; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]

After meditating for a long time, Damayantī, the daughter of Bhīma, whose smile was pure, became pale-faced and miserable, overcome by grief for her husband. (03-61-95)
सा गत्वाथापरां भूमिं बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा। विललापाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी दृष्ट्वाशोकतरुं ततः ॥०३-६१-९६॥
sā gatvāthāparāṁ bhūmiṁ bāṣpa-saṁdigdhayā girā। vilalāpāśru-pūrṇākṣī dṛṣṭvāśoka-taruṁ tataḥ॥03-61-96॥

उपगम्य तरुश्रेष्ठमशोकं पुष्पितं तदा। पल्लवापीडितं हृद्यं विहङ्गैरनुनादितम् ॥०३-६१-९७॥
upagamya taruśreṣṭham aśokaṃ puṣpitaṃ tadā। pallavāpīḍitaṃ hṛdyaṃ vihaṅgair anunāditam ॥03-61-97॥

(Having approached the best of trees, the aśoka blossoming then, pressed by tender leaves, charming, resounded by birds.)
He approached the best of trees—the blossoming aśoka—at that time, which was pressed by fresh leaves, delightful, and filled with the sounds of birds. (03-61-97)
अहो बतायमगमः श्रीमानस्मिन्वनान्तरे। आपीडैर्बहुभिर्भाति श्रीमान्द्रमिडराडिव ॥०३-६१-९८॥
aho batāyamagamaḥ śrīmānasminvanāntare। āpīḍairbahubhirbhāti śrīmāndramiḍarāḍiva ॥03-61-98॥

(Ah, indeed, this tree, splendid, in this forest-interior, with crowns by many shines, splendid, like the Dravidian king.)
Ah, indeed, this splendid tree in the middle of the forest shines forth adorned with many crowns, splendid like the king of the Dravidians. (03-61-98)
विशोकां कुरु मां क्षिप्रमशोक प्रियदर्शन। वीतशोकभयाबाधं कच्चित्त्वं दृष्टवान्नृपम् ॥०३-६१-९९॥
viśokāṁ kuru māṁ kṣipramaśoka priyadarśana। vītaśokabhayābādhaṁ kaccittvaṁ dṛṣṭavān nṛpam ॥03-61-99॥

"Make me free from sorrow quickly, O Aśoka, O beloved one with a pleasant face. Surely you have seen the king, who is free from sorrow, fear and affliction?" (03-61-99)
नलं नामारिदमनं दमयन्त्याः प्रियं पतिम्। निषधानामधिपतिं दृष्टवानसि मे प्रियम् ॥०३-६१-१००॥

(Nala named, subduer of enemies, Damayantī's dear husband, ruler of the Niṣadhas, you have seen my dear one.)
You have seen Nala, called the subduer of enemies, the dear husband of Damayantī, the lord of the Niṣadhas, my beloved. (03-61-100)
एकवस्त्रार्धसंवीतं सुकुमारतनुत्वचम्। व्यसनेनार्दितं वीरमरण्यमिदमागतम् ॥०३-६१-१०१॥
ekavastrārdhasaṃvītaṃ sukumāratanutvacam। vyasanenārditaṃ vīramaraṇyamidamāgatam ॥03-61-101॥
[एकवस्त्र (ekavastra) - with a single garment; अर्धसंवीतं (ardhasaṃvītam) - half-covered; सुकुमारतनु (sukumāratanu) - with delicate body; त्वचम् (tvacam) - skin; व्यासनेन (vyasanena) - by distress; आर्दितं (arditam) - afflicted; वीर (vīra) - hero; मरण्यम् (maraṇyam) - to the forest; इदम् (idam) - this; आगतं (āgatam) - arrived;]
(With a single garment, half-covered, with delicate body skin, afflicted by distress, the hero has arrived at this forest.)
Clad in a single garment, with his delicate skin half-covered, and suffering from hardship, this heroic one has arrived at the forest. (03-61-101)
यथा विशोका गच्छेयमशोकनग तत्कुरु। सत्यनामा भवाशोक मम शोकविनाशनात् ॥०३-६१-१०२॥
yathā viśokā gaccheyam aśokanaga tat kuru। satyanāmā bhava aśoka mama śoka-vināśanāt॥03-61-102॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; विशोका (viśokā) - without sorrow; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - I may go; अशोकनग (aśokanaga) - O Aśoka tree; तत्कुरु (tat kuru) - that do; सत्यनाम (satyanāmā) - of true name; भव (bhava) - be; अशोक (aśoka) - Aśoka; मम (mama) - my; शोकविनाशनात् (śoka-vināśanāt) - from the destruction of sorrow;]
(Just as without sorrow I may go, O Aśoka tree, that do. True-named be, O Aśoka, from my sorrow's destruction.)
O Aśoka tree, so that I may go free from sorrow, do that. O Aśoka, be truly named, for you destroy my sorrow. (03-61-102)
एवं साशोकवृक्षं तमार्ता त्रिः परिगम्य ह। जगाम दारुणतरं देशं भैमी वराङ्गना ॥०३-६१-१०३॥
evaṁ sāśokavṛkṣaṁ tamārtā triḥ parigamya ha। jagāma dāruṇataraṁ deśaṁ bhaimī varāṅganā ॥03-61-103॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; साशोकवृक्षम् (sāśokavṛkṣam) - with the Ashoka tree; तम् (tam) - that; आर्ता (ārtā) - afflicted; त्रिः (triḥ) - three times; परिगम्य (parigamya) - having gone around; ह (ha) - indeed; जगाम (jagāma) - she went; दारुणतरम् (dāruṇataram) - more dreadful; देशम् (deśam) - place; भैमी (bhaimī) - daughter of Bhīma; वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - noble lady;]
(Thus, with the Ashoka tree, that afflicted lady, having gone around three times, indeed, went to a more dreadful place, the daughter of Bhīma, the noble lady.)
Thus, the noble lady, daughter of Bhīma, afflicted, after circumambulating the Ashoka tree three times, went to a more dreadful place. (03-61-103)
सा ददर्श नगान्नैकान्नैकाश्च सरितस्तथा। नैकांश्च पर्वतान्रम्यान्नैकांश्च मृगपक्षिणः ॥०३-६१-१०४॥
sā dadarśa nagān naikān naikāś ca saritas tathā। naikāṃś ca parvatān ramyān naikāṃś ca mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ॥03-61-104॥
[सा (sā) - she; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; नगान् (nagān) - mountains; नैकान् (naikān) - many; नैकाश्च (naikāś ca) - and many; सरितस्तथा (saritas tathā) - rivers likewise; नैकांश्च (naikāṃś ca) - and many; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; रम्यान् (ramyān) - pleasant; नैकांश्च (naikāṃś ca) - and many; मृगपक्षिणः (mṛga-pakṣiṇaḥ) - beasts and birds;]
(She saw many mountains, and many rivers likewise, and many pleasant mountains, and many beasts and birds.)
She saw many mountains, many rivers, many delightful hills, and many kinds of animals and birds. (03-61-104)
कन्दरांश्च नितम्बांश्च नदांश्चाद्भुतदर्शनान्। ददर्श सा भीमसुता पतिमन्वेषती तदा ॥०३-६१-१०५॥
kandarāṁś ca nitambāṁś ca nadāṁś cādbhutadarśanān। dadarśa sā bhīmasutā patimanveṣatī tadā ॥03-61-105॥
[कन्दरान् (kandarān) - caverns; च (ca) - and; नितम्बान् (nitambān) - mountain-slopes; च (ca) - and; नदान् (nadān) - rivers; च (ca) - and; अद्भुतदर्शनान् (adbhutadarśanān) - of wondrous appearance; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; सा (sā) - she; भीमसुता (bhīmasutā) - the daughter of Bhīma; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अन्वेषती (anveṣatī) - searching; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Caverns and mountain-slopes and rivers of wondrous appearance saw she, the daughter of Bhīma, husband searching, then.)
Then, as she searched for her husband, the daughter of Bhīma saw caverns, mountain-slopes, and rivers of wondrous appearance. (03-61-105)
गत्वा प्रकृष्टमध्वानं दमयन्ती शुचिस्मिता। ददर्शाथ महासार्थं हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्कुलम् ॥०३-६१-१०६॥
gatvā prakṛṣṭamadhvānaṃ damayantī śucismitā। dadarśātha mahāsārthaṃ hastyaśvarathasaṅkulam ॥03-61-106॥

After traveling along the excellent road, Damayanti, with her pure smile, then saw the great caravan filled with elephants, horses, and chariots. (03-61-106)
उत्तरन्तं नदीं रम्यां प्रसन्नसलिलां शुभाम्। सुशीततोयां विस्तीर्णां ह्रदिनीं वेतसैर्वृताम् ॥०३-६१-१०७॥
uttarantaṃ nadīṃ ramyāṃ prasannasalilāṃ śubhām। suśītatoyāṃ vistīrṇāṃ hradinīṃ vetasairvṛtām॥03-61-107॥

प्रोद्घुष्टां क्रौञ्चकुररैश्चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम्। कूर्मग्राहझषाकीर्णां पुलिनद्वीपशोभिताम् ॥०३-६१-१०८॥
prodghuṣṭāṃ krauñcakuraraiś cakravākopakūjitām। kūrmagrāhajhaṣākīrṇāṃ pulinadvīpaśobhitām ॥03-61-108॥
[प्रोद्घुष्टां (prodghuṣṭām) - resounded; क्रौञ्चकुररैः (krauñcakuraraiḥ) - by cranes and curlews; चक्रवाकोपकूजिताम् (cakravākopakūjitām) - made melodious by the calls of cakravāka birds; कूर्मग्राहझषाकीर्णां (kūrmagrāhajhaṣākīrṇām) - strewn with turtles, crocodiles, and fishes; पुलिनद्वीपशोभिताम् (pulinadvīpaśobhitām) - adorned with sandy banks and islands;]

सा दृष्ट्वैव महासार्थं नलपत्नी यशस्विनी। उपसर्प्य वरारोहा जनमध्यं विवेश ह ॥०३-६१-१०९॥
sā dṛṣṭvaiva mahāsārthaṃ nalapatnī yaśasvinī। upasarpya varārohā janamadhyaṃ viveśa ha ॥03-61-109॥

उन्मत्तरूपा शोकार्ता तथा वस्त्रार्धसंवृता। कृशा विवर्णा मलिना पांसुध्वस्तशिरोरुहा ॥०३-६१-११०॥
unmattarūpā śokārtā tathā vastrārdhasaṁvṛtā। kṛśā vivarṇā malinā pāṁsudhvastashiroruhā ॥03-61-110॥
[उन्मत्तरूपा (unmattarūpā) - having the appearance of one insane; शोकार्ता (śokārtā) - afflicted with grief; तथा (tathā) - and also; वस्त्रार्धसंवृता (vastrārdhasaṁvṛtā) - covered only with half a garment; कृशा (kṛśā) - emaciated; विवर्णा (vivarṇā) - discolored; मलिना (malinā) - dirty; पांसुध्वस्तशिरोरुहा (pāṁsudhvastashiroruhā) - having her hair disheveled with dust;]
(Having the appearance of one insane, afflicted with grief, and also covered only with half a garment, emaciated, discolored, dirty, having her hair disheveled with dust.)

तां दृष्ट्वा तत्र मनुजाः केचिद्भीताः प्रदुद्रुवुः। केचिच्चिन्तापरास्तस्थुः केचित्तत्र विचुक्रुशुः ॥०३-६१-१११॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā tatra manujāḥ kecidbhītāḥ pradudruvuḥ। keciccintāparāstasthuḥ kecittatra vicukruśuḥ॥03-61-111॥

prahasanti sma tāṁ kecid abhyasūyanta cāpare। cakrus tasyāṁ dayāṁ kecit papracchuś cāpi bhārata॥03-61-112॥
[प्रहसन्ति (prahasanti) - laughed; स्म (sma) - indeed; तां (tāṁ) - at her; केचित् (kecit) - some; अभ्यसूयन्त (abhyasūyanta) - found fault; च (ca) - and; अपरे (apare) - others; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - showed; तस्याम् (tasyām) - to her; दयाम् (dayām) - compassion; केचित् (kecit) - some; पप्रच्छुः (papracchuḥ) - asked; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Some laughed indeed at her; others found fault; some showed compassion to her; some also asked, O Bhārata.)
Some laughed at her, others criticized her; some felt compassion towards her, and some even questioned her, O Bhārata. (03-61-112)
कासि कस्यासि कल्याणि किं वा मृगयसे वने। त्वां दृष्ट्वा व्यथिताः स्मेह कच्चित्त्वमसि मानुषी ॥०३-६१-११३॥
kāsi kasyāsi kalyāṇi kiṁ vā mṛgayase vane. tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā vyathitāḥ smeha kaccittvamasi mānuṣī ॥03-61-113॥
[कासि (kā asi) - who are (you); कस्यासि (kasya asi) - whose are (you); कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious lady; किं (kiṁ) - what; वा (vā) - or; मृगयसे (mṛgayase) - do you seek; वने (vane) - in the forest; त्वां (tvām) - you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - agitated; स्म (sma) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; कच्चित् (kaccit) - surely; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; मानुषी (mānuṣī) - a human woman;]
(Who are you? Whose are you, O auspicious lady? What or whom do you seek in the forest? Seeing you, we have become agitated here; surely you are a human woman.)
Who are you, O auspicious lady, and whose are you? What are you searching for in the forest? Having seen you, we have become disturbed here; are you truly a human woman? (03-61-113)
वद सत्यं वनस्यास्य पर्वतस्याथ वा दिशः। देवता त्वं हि कल्याणि त्वां वयं शरणं गताः ॥०३-६१-११४॥
vada satyaṁ vanasyāsya parvatasya atha vā diśaḥ। devatā tvaṁ hi kalyāṇi tvāṁ vayaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ॥03-61-114॥
[वद (vada) - speak; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; वनस्य (vanasya) - of the forest; अस्य (asya) - of this; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of the mountain; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; देवता (devatā) - goddess; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - auspicious one; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; वयम् (vayam) - we; शरणं (śaraṇaṁ) - refuge; गताः (gatāḥ) - have taken (have gone);]
(Speak truth, of this forest, of the mountain, or directions; goddess, you indeed, auspicious one, you, we, refuge, have taken.)
O auspicious goddess, speak the truth about this forest, this mountain, or the directions; for we have taken you as our refuge. (03-61-114)
यक्षी वा राक्षसी वा त्वमुताहोऽसि वराङ्गना। सर्वथा कुरु नः स्वस्ति रक्षस्वास्माननिन्दिते ॥०३-६१-११५॥
yakṣī vā rākṣasī vā tvam utāho'si varāṅganā। sarvathā kuru naḥ svasti rakṣasv āsmān anindite ॥03-61-115॥
[यक्षी (yakṣī) - female yakṣa; spirit-woman; वा (vā) - or; राक्षसी (rākṣasī) - female demon; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उताहः (utāhaḥ) - or else; असि (asi) - are; वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - beautiful woman; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; कुरु (kuru) - do; नः (naḥ) - for us; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Female yakṣa or female demon or you or else are beautiful woman. In every way do for us well-being, protect us, O blameless one.)
Whether you are a female yakṣa, a female demon, or a beautiful woman, in any case, do us good and protect us, O blameless one. (03-61-115)
यथायं सर्वथा सार्थः क्षेमी शीघ्रमितो व्रजेत्। तथा विधत्स्व कल्याणि त्वां वयं शरणं गताः ॥०३-६१-११६॥
yathāyaṃ sarvathā sārthaḥ kṣemī śīghramito vrajet। tathā vidhatsva kalyāṇi tvāṃ vayaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ॥03-61-116॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; as; in which manner; अयम् (ayam) - this (he); सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; by all means; सार्थः (sārthaḥ) - caravan; क्षेमी (kṣemī) - safe; secure; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - may depart; may go; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; विधत्स्व (vidhatsva) - arrange; make happen; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; O blessed lady; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वयम् (vayam) - we; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; shelter; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone to; have sought;]
(Just as this caravan may depart safely from here quickly in every way, so arrange, O auspicious one, we have sought refuge in you.)
Just as this caravan might quickly and safely leave from here in every way, so may you arrange it, O blessed one, for we have sought refuge with you. (03-61-116)
तथोक्ता तेन सार्थेन दमयन्ती नृपात्मजा। प्रत्युवाच ततः साध्वी भर्तृव्यसनदुःखिता ॥ सार्थवाहं च सार्थं च जना ये चात्र केचन ॥०३-६१-११७॥
tathoktā tena sārthena damayantī nṛpātmajā। pratyuvāca tataḥ sādhvī bhartṛvyasanaduḥkhitā॥ sārthavāhaṃ ca sārthaṃ ca janā ye cātra kecana॥03-61-117॥
[तथोक्ता (tathoktā) - thus addressed; तेन (tena) - by him; सार्थेन (sārthena) - by the caravan leader; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; नृपात्मजा (nṛpātmajā) - princess; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ततः (tataḥ) - then; साध्वी (sādhvī) - the virtuous lady; भर्तृव्यसनदुःखिता (bhartṛvyasanaduḥkhitā) - afflicted by husband's misfortune; सार्थवाहं (sārthavāhaṃ) - the caravan leader; च (ca) - and; सार्थं (sārthaṃ) - the caravan; च (ca) - and; जना (janā) - the people; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; केचन (kecana) - whoever;]
(Thus addressed by him, by the caravan leader, Damayanti the princess then, the virtuous lady, afflicted by her husband's misfortune, replied: 'The caravan leader and the caravan and the people who are here, whoever they are.')
Thus addressed by the caravan leader, Damayanti, the princess, who was suffering due to her husband's misfortune, then replied: 'The caravan leader, the caravan, and all the people who are here, whoever they may be.' (03-61-117)
यूनः स्थविरबालाश्च सार्थस्य च पुरोगमाः। मानुषीं मां विजानीत मनुजाधिपतेः सुताम् ॥ नृपस्नुषां राजभार्यां भर्तृदर्शनलालसाम् ॥०३-६१-११८॥
yūnaḥ sthavira-bālāś ca sārthasya ca purogamāḥ। mānuṣīṃ māṃ vijānīta manujādhipateḥ sutām॥ nṛpasnuṣāṃ rājabhāryāṃ bhartṛdarśanalālasām॥03-61-118॥
[यूनः (yūnaḥ) - young men; स्थविरबालाः (sthavira-bālāḥ) - old men and children; च (ca) - and; सार्थस्य (sārthasya) - of the caravan; च (ca) - and; पुरोगमाः (purogamāḥ) - leaders; मानुषीं (mānuṣīm) - human; माम् (mām) - me; विजानीत (vijānīta) - know; मनुजाधिपतेः (manujādhipateḥ) - of the lord of men (king); सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; नृपस्नुषाम् (nṛpasnuṣām) - king's daughter-in-law; राजभार्यां (rājabhāryāṃ) - king's wife; भर्तृदर्शनलालसाम् (bhartṛdarśanalālasām) - longing to see the husband;]
(Young men, old men, and children, and the leaders of the caravan—know me as a human (woman), the daughter of the lord of men; the king’s daughter-in-law, the royal wife, longing to see the husband.)

विदर्भराण्मम पिता भर्ता राजा च नैषधः। नलो नाम महाभागस्तं मार्गाम्यपराजितम् ॥०३-६१-११९॥
vidarbharāṇ mama pitā bhartā rājā ca naiṣadhaḥ। nalo nāma mahābhāgas taṃ mārgāmy aparājitam ॥03-61-119॥
[विदर्भराण् (vidarbharāṇ) - of the Vidarbhas; मम (mama) - my; पिता (pitā) - father; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; राजा (rājā) - king; च (ca) - and; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - of Niṣadha; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नाम (nāma) - by name; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - most fortunate; तम् (tam) - him; मार्गामि (mārgāmi) - I seek; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - unconquered;]
(Of the Vidarbhas, my father (is), husband-king and of Niṣadha, Nala by name, most fortunate; him, the unconquered, I seek.)
My father, the king of the Vidarbhas, is also my husband, Nala, the most fortunate ruler of Niṣadha; I seek him, the unconquered one. (03-61-119)
यदि जानीत नृपतिं क्षिप्रं शंसत मे प्रियम्। नलं पार्थिवशार्दूलममित्रगणसूदनम् ॥०३-६१-१२०॥
yadi jānīta nṛpatiṁ kṣipraṁ śaṁsata me priyam। nalaṁ pārthiva-śārdūlam amitra-gaṇa-sūdanam॥03-61-120॥

(To her, faultless-limbed, the lord of the great caravan, the caravan-leader named Śuci, said: "Hear, O auspicious one, my words." (03-61-121))

अहं सार्थस्य नेता वै सार्थवाहः शुचिस्मिते। मनुष्यं नलनामानं न पश्यामि यशस्विनि ॥०३-६१-१२२॥
ahaṃ sārthasya netā vai sārthavāhaḥ śucismite। manuṣyaṃ nalanāmānaṃ na paśyāmi yaśasvini ॥03-61-122॥

(I of the caravan leader indeed, caravan master, O pure-smiled one, man named Nala not I see, O illustrious one.)
O pure-smiled and illustrious one, I am the leader of the caravan, the caravan master. I do not see any man named Nala. (03-61-122)
कुञ्जरद्वीपिमहिषशार्दूलर्क्षमृगानपि। पश्याम्यस्मिन्वने कष्टे अमनुष्यनिषेविते ॥ तथा नो यक्षराडद्य मणिभद्रः प्रसीदतु ॥०३-६१-१२३॥
kuñjaradvīpimahiṣaśārdūlarkṣamṛgān api। paśyāmy asmin vane kaṣṭe amanuṣyaniṣevite॥ tathā no yakṣarāḍ adya maṇibhadraḥ prasīdatū॥03-61-123॥
[कुञ्जर (kuñjara) - elephant; द्वीपि (dvīpi) - tiger; महिष (mahiṣa) - buffalo; शार्दूल (śārdūla) - panther; ऋक्ष (rkṣa) - bear; मृगान् (mṛgān) - deer (accusative plural); अपि (api) - also; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; वने (vane) - forest; कष्टे (kaṣṭe) - difficult; अमनुष्यनिषेविते (amanuṣyaniṣevite) - inhabited by non-humans; तथा (tathā) - thus; नः (naḥ) - for us; यक्षराट् (yakṣarāṭ) - king of Yakṣas; अद्य (adya) - today; मणिभद्रः (maṇibhadraḥ) - Maṇibhadra (proper name); प्रसीदतु (prasīdatū) - may (he) be gracious;]
(Elephant, tiger, buffalo, panther, bear, deer also I see in this forest difficult, inhabited by non-humans. Thus, for us, the king of Yakṣas today, Maṇibhadra, may he be gracious. (03-61-123))
I see elephants, tigers, buffalo, panthers, bears, and deer even in this arduous forest inhabited by non-humans. So today, may Maṇibhadra, lord of the Yakṣas, be gracious to us. (03-61-123)
साब्रवीद्वणिजः सर्वान्सार्थवाहं च तं ततः। क्व नु यास्यसि सार्थोऽयमेतदाख्यातुमर्हथ ॥०३-६१-१२४॥
sābravī́d vaṇijaḥ sarvān sārt havāhaṃ ca taṃ tataḥ। kva nu yāsyasi sārtho' y am etad ākhyātum arhatha ॥03-61-124॥
[स (sa) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - the merchant; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सार्थवाहं (sārthavāhaṃ) - the caravan leader; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - will go; सार्थः (sārthaḥ) - the caravan; अयम् (ayam) - this; एतत् (etat) - this; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you (all) ought (to);]
(He spoke (the) merchant (to) all (and) the caravan leader him then: Where indeed will go (the) caravan this? This to tell you ought.)
Then the merchant spoke to all and to the caravan leader: "Where indeed will this caravan go? You ought to tell this." (3-61-124)

sārtho'yaṁ cedirājasya subāhoḥ satyavādinaḥ। kṣipraṁ janapadaṁ gantā lābhāya manujātmaje ॥03-61-125॥
[सार्थः (sārthaḥ) - caravan; अयम् (ayam) - this; चेदिराजस्य (cedirājasya) - of the king of the Cedis; सुबाहोः (subāhoḥ) - Subāhu; सत्यवादिनः (satyavādinaḥ) - (the) truthful (one); क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; जनपदं (janapadam) - territory; गन्ता (gantā) - (he) will go; लाभाय (lābhāya) - for gain; मनुजात्मजे (manujātmaje) - O son of Manu;]
(This caravan of the king of the Cedis, the truthful Subāhu, will quickly go to the territory for gain, O son of Manu.)
O son of Manu, this is the caravan of the truthful Subāhu, king of the Cedis; it will soon proceed to the country for profit. (03-61-125)
