सा तच्छ्रुत्वानवद्याङ्गी सार्थवाहवचस्तदा। अगच्छत्तेन वै सार्धं भर्तृदर्शनलालसा ॥०३-६२-१॥
sā tac chrutvā anavadyāṅgī sārthavāha-vacas tadā। agacchat tena vai sārddhaṃ bhartṛdarśana-lālasā ॥03-62-1॥
[सा (sā) - she; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - faultless-limbed (having flawless limbs); सार्थवाह (sārthavāha) - caravan leader; वचः (vacas) - speech; तदा (tadā) - then; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - she went; तेन (tena) - with him; वै (vai) - indeed; सार्धम् (sārddham) - together; भर्तृ (bhartṛ) - husband; दर्शन (darśana) - seeing; लालसा (lālasā) - desiring;]
(She, that having heard, the faultless-limbed one, caravan leader's speech, then, went with him indeed together, husband seeing desiring.)
She, the flawless-limbed woman, having heard the caravan leader's words, then went together with him, longing to see her husband. (03-62-1)
अथ काले बहुतिथे वने महति दारुणे। तडागं सर्वतोभद्रं पद्मसौगन्धिकं महत् ॥०३-६२-२॥
atha kāle bahutithe vane mahati dāruṇe। taḍāgaṃ sarvatobhadram padmasaugandhikaṃ mahat ॥03-62-2॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; afterwards; काले (kāle) - at the time; in due course; बहुतिथे (bahutithe) - with many auspicious days; abounding in tithis; वने (vane) - in the forest; महति (mahati) - great; vast; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - terrible; formidable; तडागं (taḍāgam) - lake; सर्वतोभद्रं (sarvatobhadram) - auspicious on all sides; entirely auspicious; पद्मसौगन्धिकं (padmasaugandhikam) - full of fragrant lotuses; महत् (mahat) - great; large;]
(Now, at the time abounding in many auspicious days, in the great, formidable forest, (there was) a lake, entirely auspicious, great, full of fragrant lotuses.)
Then, when many auspicious days had passed, in that great, terrible forest, there was a vast and entirely auspicious lake filled with fragrant lotuses. (03-62-2)
ददृशुर्वणिजो रम्यं प्रभूतयवसेन्धनम्। बहुमूलफलोपेतं नानापक्षिगणैर्वृतम् ॥०३-६२-३॥
dadṛśur vaṇijo ramyaṃ prabhūta-yavasendhanam. bahu-mūla-phalopetaṃ nānā-pakṣi-gaṇair vṛtam ॥03-62-3॥
[ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - merchants; रम्यम् (ramyam) - beautiful; प्रभूतयवसेन्धनम् (prabhūta-yavasa-indhanam) - abundant with pasture and fuel; बहुमूलफलोपेतम् (bahu-mūla-phala-upetam) - endowed with many roots and fruits; नानापक्षिगणैः (nānā-pakṣi-gaṇaiḥ) - by various groups of birds; वृतम् (vṛtam) - covered;]
(Saw the merchants, beautiful, abundant with pasture and fuel, endowed with many roots and fruits, covered by various groups of birds.)
The merchants saw a beautiful place, rich with pasture and firewood, full of many roots and fruits, and teeming with various flocks of birds. (03-62-3)
तं दृष्ट्वा मृष्टसलिलं मनोहरसुखावहम्। सुपरिश्रान्तवाहास्ते निवेशाय मनो दधुः ॥०३-६२-४॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā mṛṣṭasalilaṁ manoharasukhāvaham। supariśrāntavāhās te niveśāya mano dadhuḥ॥03-62-4॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मृष्टसलिलं (mṛṣṭasalilaṁ) - pure water; मनोहरसुखावहम् (manoharasukhāvaham) - bringing pleasantness and happiness; सुपरिश्रान्तवाहाः (supariśrāntavāhāḥ) - whose vehicles were exceedingly tired; ते (te) - they; निवेशाय (niveśāya) - for settling down; मनो (mano) - mind; दधुः (dadhuḥ) - placed;]
(That, having seen pure water, bringing pleasantness and happiness, whose vehicles were exceedingly tired, they for settling down mind placed.)
Seeing that pure, pleasant, and delightful-water, those whose vehicles were very weary set their minds on encamping there. (3-62-4)
संमते सार्थवाहस्य विविशुर्वनमुत्तमम्। उवास सार्थः सुमहान्वेलामासाद्य पश्चिमाम् ॥०३-६२-५॥
saṃmate sārthavāhasya viviśur vanam uttamam। uvāsa sārthaḥ sumahān velām āsādya paścimām॥03-62-5॥
[संमते (saṃmate) - with the consent; सार्थवाहस्य (sārthavāhasya) - of the caravan leader; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - they entered; वनम् (vanam) - forest; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; उवास (uvāsa) - stayed; सार्थः (sārthaḥ) - the caravan; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; वेलाम् (velām) - time (evening); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; पश्चिमाम् (paścimām) - western;]
(With the consent of the caravan leader, they entered the excellent forest. The very great caravan stayed, having reached the western time (evening).)

अथार्धरात्रसमये निःशब्दस्तिमिते तदा। सुप्ते सार्थे परिश्रान्ते हस्तियूथमुपागमत् ॥ पानीयार्थं गिरिनदीं मदप्रस्रवणाविलाम् ॥०३-६२-६॥
athārdharātra-samaye niḥśabda-stimite tadā। suptes sārthes pariśrāntes hasti-yūtham upāgamat॥ pāniyārtham giri-nadīm mada-prasravaṇā-vilām॥03-62-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अर्धरात्रसमये (ardharātra-samaye) - at midnight time; निःशब्दस्तिमिते (niḥśabda-stimite) - silent and still; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सुप्ते (supte) - asleep; सार्थे (sārthe) - the caravan; परिश्रान्ते (pariśrānte) - exhausted; हस्तियूथम् (hasti-yūtham) - herd of elephants; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - arrived; पानीयार्थम् (pāniyārtham) - for water; गिरिनदीम् (giri-nadīm) - mountain river; मदप्रस्रवणाविलाम् (mada-prasravaṇā-vilām) - turbid with streams of rut fluid;]
(Then at midnight time, silent and still at that time, with the caravan asleep and exhausted, a herd of elephants arrived for water, to the mountain river turbid with streams of rut fluid.)
Then, at midnight, when it was silent and still, as the caravan slept, exhausted, a herd of elephants arrived at the mountain river, seeking water, its waters made turbid by the flowing rut of the elephants. (03-62-6)
मार्गं संरुध्य संसुप्तं पद्मिन्याः सार्थमुत्तमम्। सुप्तं ममर्द सहसा चेष्टमानं महीतले ॥०३-६२-७॥
mārgaṁ saṁrudhya saṁsuptaṁ padminyāḥ sārtham uttamam. suptaṁ mamarda sahasā ceṣṭamānaṁ mahītale ॥03-62-7॥
[मार्गं (mārgaṁ) - path; संरुध्य (saṁrudhya) - having blocked; संसुप्तं (saṁsuptaṁ) - completely asleep; पद्मिन्याः (padminyāḥ) - of the lotus-lake; सार्थम् (sārtham) - merchant caravan; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; सुप्तं (suptaṁ) - asleep; ममर्द (mamarda) - crushed; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; चेष्टमानं (ceṣṭamānaṁ) - that was struggling/moving; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(Having blocked the path, (it) completely asleep, the excellent merchant caravan of the lotus-lake, crushed asleep, suddenly, (one) struggling on the earth.)
Having blocked the path, (it) suddenly crushed the excellent merchant caravan of the lotus-lake while they were all sound asleep, and even those struggling on the ground.
हाहारवं प्रमुञ्चन्तः सार्थिकाः शरणार्थिनः। वनगुल्मांश्च धावन्तो निद्रान्धा महतो भयात् ॥ केचिद्दन्तैः करैः केचित्केचित्पद्भ्यां हता नराः ॥०३-६२-८॥
hāhāravaṃ pramuñcantaḥ sārthikāḥ śaraṇārthinaḥ। vanagulmāṃś ca dhāvanto nidrāndhā mahato bhayāt॥ kecid dantaiḥ karaiḥ kecit kecit padbhyāṃ hatā narāḥ॥03-62-8॥
[हाहारवम् (hāhāravam) - cries of lamentation; प्रमुञ्चन्तः (pramuñcantaḥ) - emitting; सार्थिकाः (sārthikāḥ) - caravan leaders; शरणार्थिनः (śaraṇārthinaḥ) - those seeking refuge; वनगुल्मान् (vanagulmān) - forest thickets; च (ca) - and; धावन्तः (dhāvantaḥ) - running; निद्रान्धाः (nidrāndhāḥ) - blinded by sleep; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; केचित् (kecit) - some; दन्तैः (dantaiḥ) - by teeth; करैः (karaiḥ) - by hands; केचित् (kecit) - some; केचित् (kecit) - some; पद्भ्याम् (padbhyām) - by feet; हता (hatāḥ) - killed; नराः (narāḥ) - men;]
(Cries of lamentation emitting, caravan leaders, those seeking refuge, forest thickets and running, blinded by sleep, from great fear. Some by teeth, by hands some, some by feet, killed men.)
Emitting cries of lamentation, caravan leaders and those seeking refuge ran toward the forest thickets, blinded by sleep and out of great fear. Some men were killed by teeth, others by hands, and some by feet. (03-62-8)
गोखरोष्ट्राश्वबहुलं पदातिजनसङ्कुलम्। भयार्तं धावमानं तत्परस्परहतं तदा ॥०३-६२-९॥
gokharoṣṭrāśvabahulaṃ padātijana-saṅkulam। bhayārtaṃ dhāvamānaṃ tat parasparahataṃ tadā॥03-62-9॥
[गोखरोष्ट्राश्वबहुलं (gokharoṣṭrāśvabahulam) - abundant with cows, camels and horses; पदातिजनसङ्कुलम् (padātijana-saṅkulam) - crowded with foot soldiers; भयार्तं (bhayārtam) - afflicted by fear; धावमानं (dhāvamānam) - running; तत् (tat) - that; परस्परहतं (parasparahatam) - striking one another; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(That (army), abounding in cows, camels, and horses, crowded with foot soldiers, afflicted by fear, running, then, striking one another.)
Then, that army, rich in cows, camels, and horses and crowded with foot soldiers, afflicted by fear, was fleeing and in their panic were striking each other. (03-62-9)
घोरान्नादान्विमुञ्चन्तो निपेतुर्धरणीतले। वृक्षेष्वासज्य सम्भग्नाः पतिता विषमेषु च ॥ तथा तन्निहतं सर्वं समृद्धं सार्थमण्डलम् ॥०३-६२-१०॥
ghorānnādān vimuñcanto nipetur dharaṇītale। vṛkṣeṣv āsajya sambhagnāḥ patitā viṣameṣu ca॥ tathā tan-nihataṃ sarvaṃ samṛddhaṃ sārthamaṇḍalam॥03-62-10॥
[घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible; नादान् (nādān) - sounds; विमुञ्चन्तः (vimuñcantaḥ) - uttering; निपेतुः (nipetuḥ) - fell down; धरणीतले (dharaṇītale) - on the earth's surface; वृक्षेषु (vṛkṣeṣu) - upon the trees; आसज्य (āsajya) - having struck; सम्भग्नाः (sambhagnāḥ) - shattered; पतिताः (patitāḥ) - fallen; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - on uneven (places); च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; समृद्धम् (samṛddham) - prosperous; सार्थमण्डलम् (sārthamaṇḍalam) - the caravan circle;]
(Uttering terrible sounds, they fell down on the surface of the earth; having struck (against) the trees, shattered, fallen also on uneven (places); thus, all that slain (group), the prosperous caravan circle.)
With dreadful cries, they fell upon the ground; some, after crashing into trees, shattered, fell upon uneven places; thus, all that prosperous caravan circle was completely destroyed. (03-62-10)
अथापरेद्युः सम्प्राप्ते हतशिष्टा जनास्तदा। वनगुल्माद्विनिष्क्रम्य शोचन्तो वैशसं कृतम् ॥ भ्रातरं पितरं पुत्रं सखायं च जनाधिप ॥०३-६२-११॥
athāparedyuḥ samprāpte hataśiṣṭā janās tadā। vanagulmād viniṣkramya śocanto vaiśasaṃ kṛtam ॥ bhrātaraṃ pitaraṃ putraṃ sakhāyaṃ ca janādhipa ॥03-62-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अपरेद्युः (aparedyuḥ) - on the next day; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; हतशिष्टा (hataśiṣṭā) - the survivors (those left living after killing); जनाः (janāḥ) - people; तदा (tadā) - then; वनगुल्मात् (vanagulmāt) - from forest thickets; विनिष्क्रम्य (viniṣkramya) - having come out; शोचन्तः (śocantaḥ) - lamenting; वैशसं (vaiśasaṃ) - the massacre; कृतम् (kṛtam) - that was done; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; सखायम् (sakhāyam) - friend; च (ca) - and; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king (lord of the people);]
(Then, on the next day, when it had arrived, the survivors, the people, having come out from the forest thickets, lamenting the massacre that was done, (lamented) brother, father, son, friend and, O king.)
Then, O king, on the following day, when morning came, the surviving people came out of the forest thickets and, mourning the massacre that had taken place, lamented their brothers, fathers, sons, and friends. (03-62-11)
अशोचत्तत्र वैदर्भी किं नु मे दुष्कृतं कृतम्। योऽपि मे निर्जनेऽरण्ये सम्प्राप्तोऽयं जनार्णवः ॥ हतोऽयं हस्तियूथेन मन्दभाग्यान्ममैव तु ॥०३-६२-१२॥
aśocat tatra vaidarbhī kiṁ nu me duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam। yo’pi me nirjane’raṇye samprāpto’yaṁ janārṇavaḥ॥ hato’yaṁ hastiyūthena mandabhāgyān mamaiva tu॥03-62-12॥
[अशोचत् (aśocat) - grieved; lamented; तत्र (tatra) - there; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - the princess of Vidarbha (proper noun for Sītā); किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; truly; मे (me) - to me; for me; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtaṁ) - evil deed; misdeed; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; यः अपि (yaḥ api) - who also; मे (me) - to me; for me; निर्जने (nirjane) - in a deserted; in a solitary; अरण्ये (araṇye) - forest; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; come; अयम् (ayam) - this; जनार्णवः (janārṇavaḥ) - ocean of people; great mass of people; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; slain; अयम् (ayam) - this; हस्तियूथेन (hastiyūthena) - by a troop of elephants; मन्दभाग्यात्मा (mandabhāgyān) - of unfortunate (literally: slow-fortuned); मम एव (mamaiva) - of mine alone; तु (tu) - indeed; but;]
(There the princess of Vidarbha lamented: "What indeed evil deed has been done by me? Who also has come to me in the solitary forest— this great mass of people. This one has been killed by a troop of elephants, indeed for my own misfortune.")
There, the princess of Vidarbha lamented: "What wrong have I done? Who else has come to me in this lonely forest— this great mass of people? This one has been killed by a troop of elephants, truly on account of my own misfortune." (03-62-12)
प्राप्तव्यं सुचिरं दुःखं मया नूनमसंशयम्। नाप्राप्तकालो म्रियते श्रुतं वृद्धानुशासनम् ॥०३-६२-१३॥
prāptavyaṃ suciraṃ duḥkhaṃ mayā nūnam asaṃśayam। nāprāptakālo mriyate śrutaṃ vṛddhānuśāsanam॥03-62-13॥
[प्राप्तव्यं (prāptavyam) - to be obtained; to be experienced; must be endured; सुचिरं (suciram) - for a long time; दुःखं (duḥkham) - suffering; pain; मया (mayā) - by me; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - undoubtedly; without doubt; न (na) - not; अप्राप्तकालः (aprāptakālaḥ) - whose time has not yet come; म्रियते (mriyate) - dies; श्रुतं (śrutam) - it is heard; it is stated; वृद्ध-अनुशासनम् (vṛddhānuśāsanam) - instruction of elders; admonition of elders;]
(To be endured for a long time suffering by me certainly without doubt. Not whose time has not yet come dies, it is heard, instruction of elders.)
I certainly, without doubt, must endure long suffering; it is heard as the instruction of elders that one does not die before his destined time. (03-62-13)
यन्नाहमद्य मृदिता हस्तियूथेन दुःखिता। न ह्यदैवकृतं किञ्चिन्नराणामिह विद्यते ॥०३-६२-१४॥
yannāhamadya mṛditā hastiyūthena duḥkhitā। na hyadaivakṛtaṃ kiñcin narāṇāmiha vidyate॥03-62-14॥
[यन् (yan) - because; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; मृदिता (mṛditā) - crushed; हस्तियूथेन (hastiyūthena) - by an elephant herd; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - afflicted; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अदैवकृतम् (adaivakṛtam) - not (by) fate's making; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - to men; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(Because I today, crushed by an elephant herd, afflicted, not indeed anything not (by) fate's making for men here exists.)
Because I was today crushed and afflicted by an elephant herd, (it shows that) for men here there is indeed nothing that does not arise from fate. (3-62-14)
न च मे बालभावेऽपि किञ्चिद्व्यपकृतं कृतम्। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यदिदं दुःखमागतम् ॥०३-६२-१५॥
na ca me bālabhāve'pi kiñcid vyapakṛtaṃ kṛtam। karmaṇā manasā vācā yad idaṃ duḥkham āgatam॥03-62-15॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - by me; बालभावेऽपि (bālabhāve'pi) - even in childhood state; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; व्यपकृतं (vyapakṛtam) - wrong done; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was performed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come;]
(Not and by me even in childhood state anything wrong was performed by action, by mind, by speech, which this suffering has come.)
And not even in my childhood did I commit any wrong by action, mind, or speech, by which this suffering has come. (03-62-15)
मnye svayaṃvarakṛte lokapālāḥ samāgatāḥ। pratyākhyātā mayā tatra nalasyārthāya devatāḥ ॥ nūnaṃ teṣāṃ prabhāvena viyogaṃ prāptavatyaham् ॥०३-६२-१६॥
manyē svayaṃvarakṛte lokapālāḥ samāgatāḥ। pratyākhyātā mayā tatra nalasyārthāya dēvatāḥ ॥ nūnaṃ tēṣāṃ prabhāvēna viyōgaṃ prāptavat-yaham ॥03-62-16॥
[मnye (manyē) - I think; स्वयंवरकृते (svayaṃvara-kṛtē) - for the purpose of self-choice (marriage); लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - the protectors of the world (gods); समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled; प्रत्याख्याता (pratyākhyātā) - rejected; मया (mayā) - by me; तत्र (tatra) - there; नलस्यार्थाय (nalasya arthāya) - for the sake of Nala; देवताः (dēvatāḥ) - the deities; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - surely; तेषां (tēṣāṃ) - of those; प्रभावेन (prabhāvēna) - by the power; वियोगं (viyōgaṃ) - separation; प्राप्तवत्यहम् (prāptavatī aham) - I have obtained; ॥०३-६२-१६॥ (॥03-62-16॥) - ;]
(I think, for the purpose of the svayaṃvara, the guardians of the world assembled. Rejected by me there for Nala's sake were the deities. Surely, by the power of those, I have obtained separation.)
I think the guardians of the world assembled for my svayaṃvara, but I rejected the deities there for the sake of Nala. Surely, by their power, I have now experienced this separation. (03-62-16)
एवमादीनि दुःखानि सा विलप्य वराङ्गना। हतशिष्टैः सह तदा ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः ॥ अगच्छद्राजशार्दूल दुःखशोकपरायणा ॥०३-६२-१७॥
evam-ādīni duḥkhāni sā vilapya varāṅganā। hataśiṣṭaiḥ saha tadā brāhmaṇair vedapāragaiḥ ॥ agacchad rājaśārdūla duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇā ॥03-62-17॥
[एवमादीनि (evam-ādīni) - thus and other; such; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; सा (sā) - she; विलप्य (vilapya) - lamenting; वराङ्गना (varāṅganā) - the excellent woman; noble lady; हतशिष्टैः (hataśiṣṭaiḥ) - with those who were left after being slain; with the survivors; सह (saha) - together with; तदा (tadā) - then; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; priests; वेदपारगैः (vedapāragaiḥ) - proficient in the Vedas; versed in Vedas; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - departed; went; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; दुःखशोकपरायणा (duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇā) - absorbed in grief and sorrow; given to suffering and lamentation;]
(Thus and other sufferings, having lamented, the noble lady, together with the survivors, then, by Brāhmaṇas proficient in the Vedas, departed, O tiger among kings, absorbed in grief and sorrow.)
Having thus lamented her various sufferings, the noble lady, accompanied by the surviving Brāhmaṇas versed in the Vedas, then departed, O tiger among kings, immersed in grief and sorrow. (03-62-17)
गच्छन्ती सा चिरात्कालात्पुरमासादयन्महत्। सायाह्ने चेदिराजस्य सुबाहोः सत्यवादिनः ॥ वस्त्रार्धकर्तसंवीता प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम् ॥०३-६२-१८॥
gacchantī sā cirātkālāt puram āsādayan mahat। sāyāhne cedirājasya subāhoḥ satyavādinaḥ॥ vastrārdhakartasaṃvītā praviśeśa purottamam॥03-62-18॥

(Going, she, after a long time, from the passage of time, the great city approaching, in the evening, of the king of Cedi, of Subāhu, the truth-speaker, clothed with half a garment, she entered the best city.)

तां विवर्णां कृशां दीनां मुक्तकेशीममार्जनाम्। उन्मत्तामिव गच्छन्तीं ददृशुः पुरवासिनः ॥०३-६२-१९॥

(But having seen her entering the city of the king of Cedi then, the boys, village children, followed thereupon out of curiosity.)

एवमप्यसुखाविष्टा बिभर्षि परमं वपुः। भासि विद्युदिवाभ्रेषु शंस मे कासि कस्य वा ॥०३-६२-२३॥
evam apy asukhāviṣṭā bibharṣi paramaṃ vapuḥ। bhāsi vidyud ivābhreṣu śaṃsa me kāsi kasya vā॥03-62-23॥
[एवम् अपि (evam api) - thus also; nevertheless; असुख आविष्टा (asukhāviṣṭā) - afflicted by unhappiness; बिभर्षि (bibharṣi) - you bear; परमं वपुः (paramaṃ vapuḥ) - supreme form; भासि (bhāsi) - you shine; विद्युत् इव (vidyut iva) - like lightning; अभ्रेषु (abhreṣu) - in clouds; शंस मे (śaṃsa me) - tell me; कासि (kāsi) - who are you (feminine singular); कस्य वा (kasya vā) - of whom (daughter/wife) or whose;]
(Thus also, afflicted by unhappiness, you bear a supreme form. You shine like lightning in clouds. Tell me, who are you? Or of whom (are you)?)
Still, though stricken by sorrow, you possess a radiant appearance. You shine among the clouds like lightning. Tell me—who are you, and whose (daughter or wife) are you? (03-62-23)
न हि ते मानुषं रूपं भूषणैरपि वर्जितम्। असहाया नरेभ्यश्च नोद्विजस्यमरप्रभे ॥०३-६२-२४॥
na hi te mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ bhūṣaṇair api varjitam। asahāyā narebhyaś ca nodvijasy amara-prabhe ॥03-62-24॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; मानुषं (mānuṣam) - human; रूपं (rūpam) - form; भूषणैः (bhūṣaṇaiḥ) - by ornaments; अपि (api) - even; वर्जितम् (varjitam) - devoid; असहाया (asahāyā) - helpless; नरेभ्यः (narebhyaḥ) - from men; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; उद्विजस्य (udvijasya) - are you afraid; अमरप्रभे (amara-prabhe) - O lord of immortals;]
(Not indeed your human form, even by ornaments, is devoid. Helpless from men and not are you afraid, O lord of immortals.)
Truly, your human form is not lacking in ornaments. You are without help from men and do not feel fear, O lord of immortals. (3-62-24)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्या भैमी वचनमब्रवीत्। मानुषीं मां विजानीहि भर्तारं समनुव्रताम् ॥०३-६२-२५॥
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyā bhaimī vacanamabravīt। mānuṣīṁ māṁ vijānīhi bhartāraṁ samanuvratām॥03-62-25॥

(That having heard the speech of her, the daughter of Bhīma said these words: "Know me as a human (woman), devoted to my husband." (03-62-25))

सैरन्ध्रीं जातिसम्पन्नां भुजिष्यां कामवासिनीम्। फलमूलाशनामेकां यत्रसायम्प्रतिश्रयाम् ॥०३-६२-२६॥
sairandhrīṃ jāti-sampannāṃ bhujiṣyāṃ kāma-vāsinīm। phala-mūlāśanām-ekāṃ yatra sāyam-pratiśrayām ॥03-62-26॥
[सैरन्ध्रीम् (sairandhrīṃ) - female attendant; जातिसम्पन्नाम् (jāti-sampannāṃ) - possessed of nobility; भुजिष्याम् (bhujiṣyām) - to be enjoyed (as a wife); कामवासिनीम् (kāma-vāsinīm) - dwelling according to her own wish; फलमूलाशनाम् (phala-mūlāśanām) - eating fruits and roots; एकाम् (ekām) - alone; यत्र (yatra) - where; सायम् (sāyam) - at evening; प्रतिश्रयाम् (pratiśrayām) - taking shelter;]
(The female attendant endowed with nobility, to be enjoyed (as a wife), dwelling according to her own wish, eating fruits and roots, alone, where, at evening, taking shelter.)
A female attendant possessing nobility, to be enjoyed as a wife, living as she wishes, subsisting on fruits and roots, alone, taking shelter wherever evening falls. (03-62-26)
असङ्ख्येयगुणो भर्ता मां च नित्यमनुव्रतः। भर्तारमपि तं वीरं छायेवानपगा सदा ॥०३-६२-२७॥
asaṅkhyeya-guṇo bhartā māṁ ca nityam-anuvrataḥ। bhartāram-api taṁ vīraṁ chāyā-iva anapagā sadā ॥03-62-27॥
[असङ्ख्येयगुणः (asaṅkhyeya-guṇaḥ) - of innumerable virtues; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; माम् (mām) - to me; च (ca) - and; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अनुव्रतः (anuvrataḥ) - faithfully devoted; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - to husband; अपि (api) - even; तम् (tam) - that; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; छायैव (chāyā-iva) - like a shadow; अनपगा (anapagā) - not departing; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Of innumerable virtues, husband and to me always faithfully devoted; to husband even that hero like a shadow not departing always.)
My husband, of innumerable virtues, always faithfully devoted to me; I, even to that heroic husband, am always inseparable, like a shadow. (03-62-27)
तस्य दैवात्प्रसङ्गोऽभूदतिमात्रं स्म देवने। द्यूते स निर्जितश्चैव वनमेकोऽभ्युपेयिवान् ॥०३-६२-२८॥
tasya daivātprasaṅgo'bhūdatimātraṃ sma devane. dyūte sa nirjitaścaiva vanameko'bhyupeyivān ॥03-62-28॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; दैवात् (daivāt) - by fate; प्रसङ्गः (prasaṅgaḥ) - connection; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; अतिमात्रम् (atimātram) - excessively; स्म (sma) - indeed; देवने (devane) - in gambling; द्यूते (dyūte) - at dice; सः (saḥ) - he; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - defeated; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वनम् (vanam) - forest; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अभ्युपेयिवान् (abhyupeyivān) - proceeded;]
(Of him, by fate, a connection arose excessively indeed in gambling. At dice, he, defeated and indeed, forest alone proceeded.)
By fate, he became excessively involved in gambling. Defeated at dice, he indeed went alone to the forest. (03-62-28)
तमेकवसनं वीरमुन्मत्तमिव विह्वलम्। आश्वासयन्ती भर्तारमहमन्वगमं वनम् ॥०३-६२-२९॥
tam ekavasanaṃ vīram unmattam iva vihvalam। āśvāsayantī bhartāram aham anvagamaṃ vanam॥03-62-29॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एकवसनम् (ekavasanam) - in a single garment; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; उन्मत्तम् इव (unmattam iva) - like one distraught; विह्वलम् (vihvalam) - distressed; आश्वासयन्ती (āśvāsayantī) - comforting; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्वगमम् (anvagamam) - followed; वनम् (vanam) - into the forest;]
(Him, in a single garment, the hero, like one distraught, distressed; comforting (my) husband, I followed (him) into the forest.)

स कदाचिद्वने वीरः कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे। क्षुत्परीतः सुविमनास्तदप्येकं व्यसर्जयत् ॥०३-६२-३०॥
sa kadācid vane vīraḥ kasmiṃścit kāraṇāntare। kṣutparītaḥ suvimanās tad apy ekaṃ vyasarjayat ॥03-62-30॥
[स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; वने (vane) - in the forest; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - in some; कारणान्तरे (kāraṇāntare) - other cause; क्षुत्परीतः (kṣutparītaḥ) - overcome by hunger; सुविमनाः (suvimanāḥ) - of good mind; तदपि (tad api) - that also; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; व्यासर्जयत् (vyasarjayat) - gave up;]
(He at some time in the forest, the hero, for some other cause, overcome by hunger, of good mind, that also one gave up.)
He, the hero, once in the forest, for some other reason, though overcome by hunger and of steady mind, gave up even that one. (03-62-30)
तमे्कवसनं नग्नमुन्मत्तं गतचेतसम्। अनुव्रजन्ती बहुला न स्वपामि निशाः सदा ॥०३-६२-३१॥
tamekavasanaṃ nagnamunmattaṃ gatacetasam। anuvrajantī bahulā na svapāmi niśāḥ sadā॥03-62-31॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एकवसनम् (ekavasanam) - wearing a single garment; नग्नम् (nagnam) - naked; उन्मत्तम् (unmattam) - insane; गतचेतसम् (gatacetasam) - having lost consciousness; अनुव्रजन्ती (anuvrajantī) - following; बहुला (bahulā) - distressed; न (na) - not; स्वपामि (svapāmi) - do I sleep; निशाः (niśāḥ) - nights; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Him wearing a single garment, naked, insane, having lost consciousness, following (him), distressed, not do I sleep nights always.)
Always, distressed and following him—who is naked, insane, having lost his senses and wearing only one garment—I never sleep at nights. (03-62-31)
ततो बहुतिथे काले सुप्तामुत्सृज्य मां क्वचित्। वाससोऽर्धं परिच्छिद्य त्यक्तवान्मामनागसम् ॥०३-६२-३२॥
tato bahutithe kāle suptām utsṛjya māṃ kvacit. vāsaso'rdhaṃ paricchidya tyaktavān mām anāgasam ॥03-62-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; बहु-तिथे (bahu-tithe) - after many days; काले (kāle) - in time; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - (while) sleeping (me); उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; माम् (mām) - me; क्वचित् (kvacit) - at some moment; वाससः अर्धम् (vāsasaḥ ardham) - half the garment; परिच्छिद्य (paricchidya) - having divided; त्यक्तवान् (tyaktavān) - abandoned; माम् (mām) - me; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent;]
(Then after many days in time, (while) sleeping (me), having abandoned me at some moment, having divided half the garment, (he) abandoned me, (being) innocent.)
Then, after many days had passed, he left me as I slept, at some point, having divided half of the garment, and abandoned me—though I was innocent. (03-62-32)
तं मार्गमाणा भर्तारं दह्यमाना दिनक्षपाः। न विन्दाम्यमरप्रख्यं प्रियं प्राणधनेश्वरम् ॥०३-६२-३३॥
taṃ mārgamāṇā bhartāraṃ dahyamānā dinakṣapāḥ। na vindāmyamaraprakha priyaṃ prāṇadhaneśvaram॥03-62-33॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; मार्गमाणा (mārgamāṇā) - searching; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; दह्यमाना (dahyamānā) - burning (in suffering); दिनक्षपाः (dinakṣapāḥ) - days and nights; न (na) - not; विन्दामि (vindāmi) - I find; अमरप्रख्यं (amaraprakham) - equal to immortals; प्रियं (priyam) - beloved; प्राणधनेश्वरम् (prāṇadhaneśvaram) - lord of the wealth of my life;]
(Him searching husband burning days and nights not I find equal to immortals beloved lord of the wealth of my life.)
While searching for him, my husband, I am being consumed day and night, and I do not find my beloved, who is equal to the immortals, the lord of the treasure of my life. (03-62-33)
तामश्रुपरिपूर्णाक्षीं विलपन्तीं तथा बहु। राजमाताब्रवीदार्तां भैमीमार्ततरा स्वयम् ॥०३-६२-३४॥
tām aśru-paripūrṇākṣīm vilapantīṃ tathā bahu। rāja-mātā abravīt ārtāṃ bhaimīm ārtatarā svayam॥03-62-34॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अश्रुपरिपूर्णाक्षीं (aśru-paripūrṇākṣīm) - with eyes filled with tears; विलपन्तीं (vilapantīṃ) - lamenting; तथा (tathā) - thus; बहु (bahu) - much; राजमाता (rāja-mātā) - the queen mother; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; आर्ताम् (ārtām) - distressed; भैमीम् (bhaimīm) - Draupadi (daughter of Drupada); आर्ततरा (ārtatarā) - even more afflicted; स्वयम् (svayam) - herself;]
(Her, with eyes filled with tears, lamenting thus much, the queen mother, being herself even more afflicted, spoke to the distressed Draupadi.)
Seeing Draupadi, whose eyes were filled with tears and who was lamenting greatly, the queen mother, herself even more afflicted, spoke to her in her distress. (03-62-34)
वसस्व मयि कल्याणि प्रीतिर्मे त्वयि वर्तते। मृगयिष्यन्ति ते भद्रे भर्तारं पुरुषा मम ॥०३-६२-३५॥
vasasva mayi kalyāṇi prītirme tvayi vartate। mṛgayiṣyanti te bhadre bhartāraṃ puruṣā mama ॥03-62-35॥
[वसस्व (vasasva) - dwell; (you) stay; मयि (mayi) - in me; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; मे (me) - my; (of) me; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; abides; मृगयिष्यन्ति (mṛgayiṣyanti) - (they) will seek; (will) search for; ते (te) - your; भद्रे (bhadre) - O noble lady; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; मम (mama) - my;]
(Dwell in me, O auspicious one; my affection in you exists. Men, O noble lady, will seek your husband, my (husband).)
O auspicious lady, dwell with me; my love abides in you. Men, O noble one, will search for your husband, who is mine. (03-62-35)
अथ वा स्वयमागच्छेत्परिधावन्नितस्ततः। इहैव वसती भद्रे भर्तारमुपलप्स्यसे ॥०३-६२-३६॥
atha vā svayam āgacchet paridhāvann itas tataḥ। ihaiva vasatī bhadre bhartāram upalapsyase॥03-62-36॥
[अथ (atha) - then; alas; but; or; now; however; वा (vā) - or; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; by oneself; आगच्छेत् (āgacchet) - might come; may arrive; परिधावन् (paridhāvan) - running around; wandering; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; then; afterwards; इहैव (ihaiva) - here itself; वसती (vasatī) - living; dwelling (feminine participle); भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; O gentle lady; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; उपलप्स्यसे (upalapsyase) - you will obtain; you will find;]
(Then or by oneself might come, wandering from here and there; here itself living, O gentle lady, your husband you will obtain.)
Or perhaps he might come here on his own, wandering about; by staying here itself, O gentle lady, you will find your husband. (03-62-36)
राजमातुर्वचः श्रुत्वा दमयन्ती वचोऽब्रवीत्। समयेनोत्सहे वस्तुं त्वयि वीरप्रजायिनि ॥०३-६२-३७॥
rājamāturvacaḥ śrutvā damayantī vaco'bravīt। samayenotsahe vastuṃ tvayi vīraprajāyini ॥03-62-37॥
[राजमातुः (rājamātuḥ) - of the queen mother; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; समयेन (samayena) - in due time; उत्सहे (utsahe) - I am able; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to live; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; वीरप्रजायिनि (vīraprajāyini) - O mother of heroes;]
(Hearing the speech of the queen mother, Damayanti spoke words: "In due time, I am able to live with you, O mother of heroes." (03-62-37))
Having heard the queen mother's words, Damayanti said: "I will be able to stay with you in due time, O mother of heroes." (03-62-37)
उच्छिष्टं नैव भुञ्जीयां न कुर्यां पादधावनम्। न चाहं पुरुषानन्यान्सम्भाषेयं कथञ्चन ॥०३-६२-३८॥
ucchiṣṭaṃ naiva bhuñjīyāṃ na kuryāṃ pādadhāvanam। na cāhaṃ puruṣān anyān sambhāṣeyaṃ kathañcana ॥03-62-38॥
[उच्छिष्टं (ucchiṣṭam) - leftover (food); न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; भुञ्जीयां (bhuñjīyām) - I would eat; न (na) - not; कुर्यां (kuryām) - I would do; पादधावनम् (pādadhāvanam) - feet-washing; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; अन्यांश् (anyān) - others; सम्भाषेयं (sambhāṣeyaṃ) - I would converse with; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Leftover (food) indeed not I would eat, not I would do feet-washing; neither and I men others I would converse with in any way.)
I would never eat leftover food, nor perform feet-washing; nor would I ever converse with other men in any way. (03-62-38)
प्रार्थयेद्यदि मां कश्चिद्दण्ड्यस्ते स पुमान्भवेत्। भर्तुरन्वेषणार्थं तु पश्येयं ब्राह्मणानहम् ॥०३-६२-३९॥
prārthayed yadi māṃ kaścid daṇḍyas te sa pumān bhavet। bhartur anveṣaṇārthaṃ tu paśyeyaṃ brāhmaṇān aham॥03-62-39॥
[प्रार्थयेत् (prārthayet) - might request; यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; दण्ड्यः (daṇḍyaḥ) - liable to punishment; ते (te) - your; सः (saḥ) - he; पुमान् (pumān) - man; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; अन्वेषणार्थम् (anveṣaṇārtham) - for the purpose of searching; तु (tu) - but; पश्येयम् (paśyeyam) - I should see; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brahmins; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(If anyone might request me, he, your man, should be liable to punishment. But for the purpose of searching the husband, I should see Brahmins myself.)
If anyone requests me, he, your man, should be punished; but for the sake of searching for my husband, I myself will see the Brahmins. (03-62-39)
यद्येवमिह कर्तव्यं वसाम्यहमसंशयम्। अतोऽन्यथा न मे वासो वर्तते हृदये क्वचित् ॥०३-६२-४०॥
yadyevam iha kartavyaṃ vasāmy aham asaṃśayam। ato'nyathā na me vāso vartate hṛdaye kvacit॥03-62-40॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; एवम् (evam) - thus; इह (iha) - here; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - to be done; वसामि (vasāmi) - I dwell; अहम् (aham) - I; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; वासः (vāsaḥ) - residence; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (the) heart; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(If thus here the duty (is), I dwell, I, without doubt. Therefore, otherwise, not to me residence exists in (the) heart anywhere (03-62-40))
If such is the duty here, then I shall undoubtedly reside. Otherwise, my residence finds no place in my heart anywhere. (03-62-40)
तां प्रहृष्टेन मनसा राजमातेदमब्रवीत्। सर्वमेतत्करिष्यामि दिष्ट्या ते व्रतमीदृशम् ॥०३-६२-४१॥
tāṃ prahṛṣṭena manasā rājamātedamabravīt। sarvametatkariṣyāmi diṣṭyā te vratamīdṛśam ॥03-62-41॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; प्रहृष्टेन (prahṛṣṭena) - with gladdened; मनसा (manasā) - mind; राजमाता (rājamātā) - queen-mother; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I shall do; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; ते (te) - your; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(Her, with gladdened mind, the queen-mother this said. All this I shall do; by fortune your vow such.)
The queen-mother, her mind gladdened, said this: "By good fortune, I shall perform all this; such is your vow." (03-62-41)
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भैमीं राजमाता विशां पते। उवाचेदं दुहितरं सुनन्दां नाम भारत ॥०३-६२-४२॥
evam-uktvā tato bhaimīṃ rājamātā viśāṃ pate। uvācedaṃ duhitaraṃ sunandāṃ nāma bhārata ॥03-62-42॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भैमीम् (bhaimīm) - the daughter of Bhīma; राजमाता (rājamātā) - queen mother; विशाम् (viśām) - of peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; दुहितरम् (duhitaram) - daughter; सुनन्दाम् (sunandām) - Sunandā; नाम (nāma) - named; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus having spoken, then to Bhīma's daughter, the queen mother, O lord of peoples, said this to her daughter named Sunandā, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, thus, after having spoken, the queen mother then said this to her daughter named Sunandā, O lord of the people. (03-62-42)
सैरन्ध्रीमभिजानीष्व सुनन्दे देवरूपिणीम्। एतया सह मोदस्व निरुद्विग्नमनाः स्वयम् ॥०३-६२-४३॥
sairandhrīm abhijānīṣva sunande devarūpiṇīm। etayā saha modasva nirudvignamanāḥ svayam॥03-62-43॥
[सैरन्ध्रीम् (sairandhrīm) - to Sairandhrī; अभिजानीष्व (abhijānīṣva) - you recognize; सुनन्दे (sunande) - O Sunandā; देवरूपिणीम् (devarūpiṇīm) - divine-formed; एतया (etayā) - with her; सह (saha) - together; मोदस्व (modasva) - rejoice; निरुद्विग्नमनाः (nirudvignamanāḥ) - untroubled mind; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself;]
(To Sairandhrī, you recognize, O Sunandā, divine-formed. With her together, rejoice, untroubled mind, yourself.)
O Sunandā, recognize Sairandhrī, who is divine in form. Together with her, rejoice yourself, keeping your mind untroubled. (03-62-43)
