Bṛhadaśva said.
उत्सृज्य दमयन्तीं तु नलो राजा विशां पते। ददर्श दावं दह्यन्तं महान्तं गहने वने ॥०३-६३-१॥
utsṛjya damayantīṃ tu nalo rājā viśāṃ pate। dadarśa dāvaṃ dahyantaṃ mahāntaṃ gahane vane ॥03-63-1॥
[उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; दमयन्तीं (damayantīṃ) - Damayantī; तु (tu) - but; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of people; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; दावं (dāvaṃ) - forest fire; दह्यन्तं (dahyantam) - burning; महान्तं (mahāntam) - great; गहने (gahane) - dense; वने (vane) - in the forest;]
(Having abandoned Damayantī but Nala, the king, O lord of people, saw a forest fire burning, great, in the dense forest.)
But having abandoned Damayantī, Nala the king, O lord of people, saw a great forest fire burning in the dense woods. (03-63-1)
तत्र शुश्राव मध्येऽग्नौ शब्दं भूतस्य कस्यचित्। अभिधाव नलेत्युच्चैः पुण्यश्लोकेति चासकृत् ॥०३-६३-२॥
tatra śuśrāva madhye'gnau śabdaṃ bhūtasya kasyacit। abhidāva naletyuccaiḥ puṇyaśloketi cāsakṛt॥03-63-2॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; शब्दं (śabdam) - sound; भूतस्य (bhūtasya) - of a being; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; अभिधाव (abhidāva) - run toward; नल (nala) - Nala; इति (iti) - thus; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - aloud; पुण्यश्लोक (puṇyaśloka) - O virtuous; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly;]
(There he heard in the midst of the fire the sound of some being, "Run toward, Nala!" thus, aloud, "O virtuous one!" thus, and repeatedly.)
There, in the midst of the fire, he heard the sound of some being, calling out loudly and repeatedly: "Run, Nala! O virtuous one!" (03-63-2)
मा भैरिति नलश्चोक्त्वा मध्यमग्नेः प्रविश्य तम्। ददर्श नागराजानं शयानं कुण्डलीकृतम् ॥०३-६३-३॥
mā bhair iti nalaś ca uktvā madhyamagneḥ praviśya tam। dadarśa nāgarājānam śayānam kuṇḍalīkṛtam॥03-63-3॥
[मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; इति (iti) - thus; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; मध्यमग्नेः (madhyamagneḥ) - of the middle fire (name of a sacrificial fire); प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; तम् (tam) - him; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; नागराजानम् (nāgarājānam) - the king of serpents; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; कुण्डलीकृतम् (kuṇḍalīkṛtam) - coiled;]
(Do not fear thus, and Nala having said, having entered the middle fire, him he saw, the king of serpents, lying, coiled.)
After saying "Do not fear," Nala, having entered the middle fire, saw the king of serpents lying coiled. (03-63-3)
स नागः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा वेपमानो नलं तदा। उवाच विद्धि मां राजन्नागं कर्कोटकं नृप ॥०३-६३-४॥
sa nāgaḥ prāñjalir bhūtvā vepamāno nalaṃ tadā। uvāca viddhi māṃ rājan nāgaṃ karkoṭakaṃ nṛpa ॥03-63-4॥
[स (sa) - he; नागः (nāgaḥ) - serpent; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; तदा (tadā) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; माम् (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O King; नागम् (nāgam) - serpent; कर्कोटकम् (karkoṭakam) - Karkotaka; नृप (nṛpa) - O ruler;]
(He serpent with folded hands having become trembling Nala then said, "Know me, O King, serpent Karkotaka, O ruler.")
That serpent, trembling, with folded hands, then said to Nala: "Know me, O King, I am the serpent Karkotaka, O ruler." (03-63-4)
मया प्रलब्धो ब्रह्मर्षिरनागाः सुमहातपाः। तेन मन्युपरीतेन शप्तोऽस्मि मनुजाधिप ॥०३-६३-५॥
mayā pralabdho brahmarṣir anāgāḥ sumahātapāḥ. tena manyuparītena śapto'smi manujādhipa ॥03-63-5॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; प्रलब्धः (pralabdhaḥ) - insulted; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa sage; अनागाः (anāgāḥ) - blameless; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - having very great penance; तेन (tena) - by him; मन्यु-परीतेन (manyuparītena) - overcome by anger; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; अस्मि (asmi) - am; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(By me was insulted the Brāhmaṇa sage, blameless, of very great penance. By him, overcome by anger, I am cursed, O ruler of men.)
O ruler of men, I insulted the Brāhmaṇa sage, who was blameless and possessed of great penance. Because he was overcome by anger, I am cursed by him. (03-63-5)
तस्य शापान्न शक्नोमि पदाद्विचलितुं पदम्। उपदेक्ष्यामि ते श्रेयस्त्रातुमर्हति मां भवान् ॥०३-६३-६॥
tasya śāpān na śaknomi padād vicalituṃ padam। upadekṣyāmi te śreyas trātum arhati māṃ bhavān॥03-63-6॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; पदात् (padāt) - from position; विचलितुम् (vicalitum) - to move; पदम् (padam) - a step; उपदेक्ष्यामि (upadekṣyāmi) - I shall instruct; ते (te) - to you; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the good; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; माम् (mām) - me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respected one);]
(Of him from curse not I am able from position to move a step. I shall instruct to you the good to protect deserves me you.)
Because of his curse, I am not able to move a single step from this position. I shall instruct you (about) what is good, as you deserve to protect me. (03-63-6)
सखा च ते भविष्यामि मत्समो नास्ति पन्नगः। लघुश्च ते भविष्यामि शीघ्रमादाय गच्छ माम् ॥०३-६३-७॥
sakhā ca te bhaviṣyāmi matsamo nāsti pannagaḥ। laghuś ca te bhaviṣyāmi śīghram ādāya gaccha mām॥03-63-7॥
[सखा (sakhā) - friend; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I will become; मत्समः (matsamaḥ) - equal to me; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent; लघुश् (laghuḥ) - light; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I will become; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; माम् (mām) - me;]
(Friend and to you I will become; equal to me there is not a serpent. Light and to you I will become; quickly having taken, go me.)
I will become your friend, and there is no serpent equal to me. I will also become light for you; take me quickly and go. (03-63-7)
एवमुक्त्वा स नागेन्द्रो बभूवाङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः। तं गृहीत्वा नलः प्रायादुद्देशं दाववर्जितम् ॥०३-६३-८॥
evam uktvā sa nāgendro babhūvāṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ। taṃ gṛhītvā nalaḥ prāyāduddeśaṃ dāvavarjitam॥03-63-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; स (sa) - he; नागेन्द्रः (nāgendraḥ) - king of serpents; बभूव (babhūva) - became; अङ्गुष्ठमात्रकः (aṅguṣṭhamātrakaḥ) - of the size of a thumb; तं (taṃ) - him; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; उद्देशम् (uddeśam) - place; दाववर्जितम् (dāvavarjitam) - free from fire;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the king of serpents, became of the size of a thumb. Having taken him, Nala departed to a place free from fire.)
After saying this, the king of serpents became as small as a thumb. Taking him, Nala went to a place that was free from fire. (03-63-8)
आकाशदेशमासाद्य विमुक्तं कृष्णवर्त्मना। उत्स्रष्टुकामं तं नागः पुनः कर्कोटकोऽब्रवीत् ॥०३-६३-९॥
ākāśadeśam āsādya vimuktaṃ kṛṣṇavartmanā। utsraṣṭukāmaṃ taṃ nāgaḥ punaḥ karkoṭako ’bravīt ॥03-63-9॥
[आकाशदेशम् (ākāśadeśam) - sky-region; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - released; कृष्णवर्त्मना (kṛṣṇavartmanā) - by the black path; उत्स्रष्टुकामं (utsraṣṭukāmam) - desiring to let go; तं (taṃ) - him; नागः (nāgaḥ) - the serpent; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कर्कोटकः (karkoṭakaḥ) - Karḱoṭaka (proper name); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having reached the region of the sky, released by the black path, him desiring to let go, the serpent Karṭoṭaka again spoke.)
Having reached the sky-region, once he was released from the black path and wished to let go, the serpent Karṭoṭaka spoke again. (03-63-9)
पदानि गणयन्गच्छ स्वानि नैषध कानिचित्। तत्र तेऽहं महाराज श्रेयो धास्यामि यत्परम् ॥०३-६३-१०॥
padāni gaṇayan gaccha svāni naiṣadha kānicit। tatra te'haṃ mahārāja śreyo dhāsyāmi yat param ॥03-63-10॥
[पदानि (padāni) - steps; गणयन् (gaṇayan) - counting; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; स्वानि (svāni) - your own; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O Naiṣadha (descendant of Nala); कानिचित् (kānicit) - a few; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better (thing); धास्यामि (dhāsyāmi) - I will give; यत् (yat) - which; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(Counting steps, go, your own, O Naiṣadha, a few. There, to you, I, great king, better (thing) will give, which is supreme.)
O Naiṣadha, count your steps and proceed a little further. There, O great king, I will grant you the greatest good, which is supreme. (03-63-10)
ततः सङ्ख्यातुमारब्धमदशद्दशमे पदे। तस्य दष्टस्य तद्रूपं क्षिप्रमन्तरधीयत ॥०३-६३-११॥
tataḥ saṅkhyātum ārabdham adaśad daśame pade। tasya daṣṭasya tad rūpaṁ kṣipram antaradhīyata ॥03-63-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सङ्ख्यातुम् (saṅkhyātum) - to count; आरब्धम् (ārabdham) - begun; अदशत् (adaśat) - bit; दशमे (daśame) - in the tenth; पदे (pade) - location; तस्य (tasya) - of that (person); दष्टस्य (daṣṭasya) - of the bitten one; तत् (tat) - that; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Then, to count begun, bit in the tenth location. Of that bitten one, that form quickly disappeared.)
Then, when counting had begun, he bit the tenth (person) in his place. The form of the one who was bitten quickly disappeared. (03-63-11)
स दृष्ट्वा विस्मितस्तस्थावात्मानं विकृतं नलः। स्वरूपधारिणं नागं ददर्श च महीपतिः ॥०३-६३-१२॥
sa dṛṣṭvā vismitas tasthāv ātmānaṃ vikṛtaṃ nalaḥ। svarūpa-dhāriṇaṃ nāgaṃ dadarśa ca mahīpatiḥ॥03-63-12॥
[स (sa) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; अतस्थात् (atasthāt) - stood; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; विकृतम् (vikṛtam) - changed; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; स्वरूपधारिणम् (svarūpa-dhāriṇam) - bearing his own form; नागम् (nāgam) - serpent; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; च (ca) - and; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(He, having seen, astonished, stood himself changed, Nala. The bearing-his-own-form serpent also the king saw.)
Upon seeing himself transformed, Nala stood astonished; and the king saw the serpent assuming his own form. (03-63-12)
ततः कर्कोटको नागः सान्त्वयन्नलमब्रवीत्। मया तेऽन्तर्हितं रूपं न त्वा विद्युर्जना इति ॥०३-६३-१३॥
tataḥ karkoṭako nāgaḥ sāntvayannalamabravīt। mayā te'ntarhitaṃ rūpaṃ na tvā vidyurjanā iti ॥03-63-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्कोटकः (karkoṭakaḥ) - Karkaṭaka; नागः (nāgaḥ) - nāga (serpent); सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - soothing; अलम् (alam) - enough; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - your; अन्तर्हितम् (antarhitam) - hidden; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; विद्युः (vidyuḥ) - know; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then Karkaṭaka the nāga, soothing (him), said "enough": "By me, your form is hidden; not you do people know, thus." (03-63-13))
Then Karkaṭaka the nāga soothed him and said, "Enough. I have hidden your form; people will not recognize you." (03-63-13)
यत्कृते चासि विकृतो दुःखेन महता नल। विषेण स मदीयेन त्वयि दुःखं निवत्स्यति ॥०३-६३-१४॥
yatkṛte cāsi vikṛto duḥkhena mahatā nala। viṣeṇa sa madīyena tvayi duḥkhaṃ nivatsyati ॥03-63-14॥
[यत्-कृते (yat-kṛte) - for whose sake; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; विकृतः (vikṛtaḥ) - afflicted; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by sorrow; महतā (mahatā) - great; नल (nala) - O Nala; विषेण (viṣeṇa) - by poison; सः (saḥ) - he; मदीयेन् (madīyena) - of mine; त्वयि (tvayi) - on you; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; निवत्स्यति (nivatysati) - will reside;]
(For whose sake and you are afflicted by great sorrow, O Nala. By my poison, he will reside suffering on you.)
O Nala, for whose sake you are afflicted by great sorrow, by my own poison, that sorrow will reside upon you. (03-63-14)
विषेण संवृतैर्गात्रैर्यावत्त्वां न विमोक्ष्यति। तावत्त्वयि महाराज दुःखं वै स निवत्स्यति ॥०३-६३-१५॥
viṣeṇa saṁvṛtairgātrairyāvat tvāṁ na vimokṣyati. tāvat tvayi mahārāja duḥkhaṁ vai sa nivatsyati ॥03-63-15॥
[विषेण (viṣeṇa) - with poison; संवृतैः (saṁvṛtaiḥ) - enveloped; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - by the limbs; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; त्वां (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; विमोक्ष्यति (vimokṣyati) - (he) releases; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; निवत्स्यति (nivatsyati) - will dwell;]
(With poison-enveloped limbs, as long as he does not release you, so long, O great king, in you, indeed, suffering he will dwell.)
O great king, so long as his limbs, filled with poison, do not release you, that suffering will surely remain with you. (03-63-15)
अनागा येन निकृतस्त्वमनर्हो जनाधिप। क्रोधादसूययित्वा तं रक्षा मे भवतः कृता ॥०३-६३-१६॥
anāgā yena nikṛtastvamanarho janādhipa। krodhādasūyayitvā taṃ rakṣā me bhavataḥ kṛtā ॥03-63-16॥
[अनागा (anāgā) - not guilty; blameless; येन (yena) - by whom; निकृतः (nikṛtaḥ) - deceived; affronted; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनर्हः (anarhaḥ) - unworthy; undeserving; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king; lord of people; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - out of anger; असूययित्वा (asūyayitvā) - having become jealous; having envied; तं (taṃ) - him; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; मे (me) - of me; my; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; कृता (kṛtā) - has been done; was made;]
(Not guilty by whom affronted you unworthy O king, out of anger having envied him, protection of me by you has been done.)
O king, you, being unworthy, were affronted by one who was not guilty; having envied him out of anger, you have granted me protection. (03-63-16)
न ते भयं नरव्याघ्र दंष्ट्रिभ्यः शत्रुतोऽपि वा। ब्रह्मविद्भ्यश्च भविता मत्प्रसादान्नराधिप ॥०३-६३-१७॥
na te bhayaṃ naravyāghra daṃṣṭribhyaḥ śatruto’pi vā। brahmavidbhyaś ca bhavitā matprasādān narādhipa ॥03-63-17॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; दंष्ट्रिभ्यः (daṃṣṭribhyaḥ) - to fanged beings; शत्रुतः (śatrutaḥ) - from enemies; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; ब्रह्मविद्भ्यः (brahmavidbhyaḥ) - from knowers of Brahman; च (ca) - and; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my favor; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; ॥०३-६३-१७॥ (॥03-63-17॥) -;]
(Not to you fear, O tiger among men, from the fanged beings, from enemies even or from knowers of Brahman and will be by my favor, O king.)
O king, by my favor, there will be no fear for you from fanged beings, from enemies, or even from knowers of Brahman. (03-63-17)
राजन् विष निमित्ताः च न ते पीडा भविष्यति। सङ्ग्रामेषु च राजेन्द्र शश्वत् जयम् अवाप्स्यसि ॥०३-६३-१८॥
rājan viṣa nimittāḥ ca na te pīḍā bhaviṣyati. saṅgrāmeṣu ca rājendra śaśvat jayam avāpsyasi ॥03-63-18॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; विष (viṣa) - poison; निमित्ताः (nimittāḥ) - causes; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; पीडा (pīḍā) - pain; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O chief of kings; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; जयम् (jayam) - victory; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
(O king, poison-causes and not to you pain will be. In battles and O chief of kings, always victory you will obtain.)
O king, there will not be pain for you arising from poison. And in battles, O chief of kings, you will always gain victory. (03-63-18)
गच्छ राजन्नितः सूतो बाहुकोऽहमिति ब्रुवन्। समीपमृतुपर्णस्य स हि वेदाक्षनैपुणम् ॥ अयोध्यां नगरीं रम्यामद्यैव निषधेश्वर ॥०३-६३-१९॥
gaccha rājannitaḥ sūto bāhuko'hamiti bruvan। samīpamṛtuparṇasya sa hi vedākṣanaipuṇam ॥ ayodhyāṃ nagarīṃ ramyāmadyaiva niṣadheśvara ॥03-63-19॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; राजन् (rājan) - O king; नितः (nitaḥ) - being led; सूतो (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka (proper noun); अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; ऋतुपर्णस्य (ṛtuparṇasya) - of Ṛtuparṇa; स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; वेद (veda) - knows; अक्षनैपुणम् (akṣanaipuṇam) - skill in dice; अयोध्याम् (ayodhyām) - Ayodhyā; नगरीम् (nagarīm) - city; रम्याम् (ramyām) - charming; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - indeed; निषधेश्वर (niṣadheśvara) - O lord of Niṣadha;]
(Go, O king, being led, the charioteer (as) Bāhuka, I—thus speaking—near Ṛtuparṇa, he indeed knows skill in dice. Ayodhyā the city charming today indeed, O lord of Niṣadha.)
Go, O king, with the charioteer Bāhuka who will claim, 'I am Bāhuka,' and speaking thus, proceed near Ṛtuparṇa, for he indeed knows the skill of dice. O lord of Niṣadha, go to the beautiful city of Ayodhyā today itself. (03-63-19)
स तेऽक्षहृदयं दाता राजाश्वहृदयेन वै। इक्ष्वाकुकुलजः श्रीमान्मित्रं चैव भविष्यति ॥०३-६३-२०॥
sa te'kṣahṛdayaṃ dātā rājāśvahṛdayena vai। ikṣvāku-kulajaḥ śrīmān mitraṃ caiva bhaviṣyati॥03-63-20॥
[स (sa) - he; ते (te) - to you; अक्षहृदयं (akṣa-hṛdayam) - the heart of dice; दाता (dātā) - giver; राजाश्वहृदयेन (rājā-aśva-hṛdayena) - with the heart of a royal horse; वै (vai) - truly; इक्ष्वाकुकुलजः (ikṣvāku-kulajaḥ) - descendant of the Ikṣvāku dynasty; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous one; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(He, to you, the giver of the heart of dice, with the heart of a royal horse truly; the prosperous descendant of the Ikṣvāku dynasty will indeed become (your) friend.)
He, the prosperous prince born in the Ikṣvāku dynasty, who gives you the heart of dice with a royal horse's spirit, will truly become your friend. (03-63-20)
भविष्यसि यदाक्षज्ञः श्रेयसा योक्ष्यसे तदा। समेष्यसि च दारैस्त्वं मा स्म शोके मनः कृथाः ॥ राज्येन तनयाभ्यां च सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥०३-६३-२१॥
bhaviṣyasi yad ākṣajñaḥ śreyasā yokṣyase tadā। sameṣyasi ca dārais tvaṃ mā sma śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥ rāj yena tanayābhyāṃ ca satyam etad bravīmi te ॥03-63-21॥
[भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; यदा (yadā) - when; आक्षज्ञः (ākṣajñaḥ) - one possessing knowledge; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - through excellence; योक्ष्यसे (yokṣyase) - you will unite (with, or enjoy); तदा (tadā) - then; समेष्यसि (sameṣyasi) - you will be united; च (ca) - and; दारैः (dāraiḥ) - with wives; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मा (mā) - do not; स्म (sma) - indeed; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - your mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - should put; राज्येन (rājyena) - with kingdom; तनयाभ्यां (tanayābhyāṃ) - with two sons; च (ca) - and; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(You will become, when one possessing knowledge, through excellence you will enjoy then; you will be united and with wives you, do not indeed in grief (your) mind should put. With the kingdom, with two sons also, truth this I speak to you.)
You will become (prosperous); when you are wise, you will enjoy prosperity; then you will be reunited with your wives. Do not let your mind dwell in grief. Along with the kingdom and your two sons as well—this is truth, I tell you. (03-63-21)
स्वरूपं च यदा द्रष्टुमिच्छेथास्त्वं नराधिप। संस्मर्तव्यस्तदा तेऽहं वासश्चेदं निवासयेः ॥०३-६३-२२॥
svarūpaṃ ca yadā draṣṭum icchetāḥ tvaṃ narādhipa। saṃsmartavyaḥ tadā te'haṃ vāsaś cedam nivāsayeḥ ॥03-63-22॥
[स्वरूपं (svarūpam) - true form; च (ca) - and; यदा (yadā) - when; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; इच्छेथाः (icchetāḥ) - you desire; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; नराधिप (narādhipa) - king; संस्मर्तव्यः (saṃsmartavyaḥ) - to be remembered; तदा (tadā) - then; ते (te) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; निवासयेः (nivāsayeḥ) - should cause to dwell;]
(And when you desire to see (my) true form, O king, then I am to be remembered by you, and this dwelling should you cause to reside.)
O king, when you wish to see my true form, then you must remember me and cause this dwelling to abide. (03-63-22)
अनेन वाससाच्छन्नः स्वरूपं प्रतिपत्स्यसे। इत्युक्त्वा प्रददावस्मै दिव्यं वासोयुगं तदा ॥०३-६३-२३॥
anena vāsasācchannaḥ svarūpaṃ pratipatsyase। ity uktvā pradadāvasmai divyaṃ vāsoyugaṃ tadā ॥03-63-23॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; वाससा (vāsasā) - with garment; आच्छन्नः (ācchannaḥ) - covered; स्वरूपं (svarūpam) - true form; प्रतिपत्स्यसे (pratipatsyase) - you will attain; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; प्रददौ (pradadau) - he gave; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; वासोयुगं (vāsoyugam) - pair of garments; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Covered with this garment, your true form you will attain. Thus having spoken, he gave to him the divine pair of garments then.)
"Covered with this garment, you will regain your true form." Saying thus, he then gave him the divine pair of garments. (03-63-23)
एवं नलं समादिश्य वासो दत्त्वा च कौरव। नागराजस्ततो राजंस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥०३-६३-२४॥
evaṁ nalaṁ samādiśya vāso dattvā ca kaurava। nāgarājastato rājaṁstatraivāntaradhīyata ॥03-63-24॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; नलम् (nalaṁ) - Nala; सम्-आदिश्य (sam-ādiśya) - having instructed well; वासः (vāsaḥ) - clothing; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; नागराजः (nāgarājaḥ) - the king of nāgas; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Thus, having instructed Nala well and having given clothing, and O Kaurava, the king of nāgas then, O king, disappeared right there.)
Thus, having properly instructed Nala and given him garments, the king of the nāgas then disappeared right there, O Kaurava. (03-63-24)
