तस्मिन्नन्तर्हिते नागे प्रययौ नैषधो नलः। ऋतुपर्णस्य नगरं प्राविशद्दशमेऽहनि ॥०३-६४-१॥
tasminn antarhite nāge prayayau naiṣadho nalaḥ। ṛtuparṇasya nagaraṃ prāviśad daśame'ahani ॥03-64-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अन्तर्हिते (antarhite) - having disappeared; नागे (nāge) - Nāga (serpent); प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the king of Nishadha; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; ऋतुपर्णस्य (ṛtuparṇasya) - of Ṛtuparṇa; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - city; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; दशमे (daśame) - on the tenth; अहनि (ahani) - day;]
(In that (when) the Nāga had disappeared, departed the king of Nishadha, Nala; of Ṛtuparṇa the city entered on the tenth day.)
When the Nāga had disappeared, Nala the king of Nishadha departed and, on the tenth day, entered the city of Ṛtuparṇa. (03-64-1)
स राजानमुपातिष्ठद्बाहुकोऽहमिति ब्रुवन्। अश्वानां वाहने युक्तः पृथिव्यां नास्ति मत्समः ॥०३-६४-२॥
sa rājānam upātiṣṭhad bāhuko'ham iti bruvan। aśvānāṃ vāhane yuktaḥ pṛthivyāṃ nāsti matsamaḥ॥03-64-2॥
[स (sa) - he; राजानम् (rājānam) - king (the king); उपातिष्ठत् (upātiṣṭhat) - approached; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka (the name 'Bāhuka'); अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - of horses; वाहने (vāhane) - in driving; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - skilled; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - upon earth; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; मत्समः (matsamaḥ) - equal to me;]
(He approached the king, saying "I am Bāhuka." In driving horses, skilled, upon earth there is not equal to me.)

अर्थकृच्छ्रेषु चैवाहं प्रष्टव्यो नैपुणेषु च। अन्नसंस्कारमपि च जानाम्यन्यैर्विशेषतः ॥०३-६४-३॥
arthakṛcchreṣu caiva ahaṃ praṣṭavyaḥ naipuṇeṣu ca. annasaṃskāram api ca jānāmi anyaiḥ viśeṣataḥ ॥03-64-3॥
[अर्थकृच्छ्रेषु (arthakṛcchreṣu) - in financial difficulties; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रष्टव्यः (praṣṭavyaḥ) - one to be consulted; नैपुणेषु (naipuṇeṣu) - in expert matters; च (ca) - and; अन्नसंस्कारम् (annasaṃskāram) - food preparation; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(In financial difficulties and indeed I am to be consulted, and in expert matters. Food preparation also and I know by others especially.)
I should be consulted in financial hardships and expert matters. I also especially know the preparation of food better than others. (03-64-3)
यानि शिल्पानि लोकेऽस्मिन्यच्चाप्यन्यत्सुदुष्करम्। सर्वं यतिष्ये तत्कर्तुमृतुपर्ण भरस्व माम् ॥०३-६४-४॥
yāni śilpāni loke'smin yac cāpy anyat suduṣkaram। sarvaṃ yatiṣye tat kartum ṛtuparṇa bharasva mām ॥03-64-4॥

(Which arts in this world and also whatever other very difficult (things), all that I shall strive to do; Rtuparna, carry me.)
Rtuparna, I shall strive to accomplish all the arts in this world and whatever other difficult things there are; carry me.

वस बाहुक भद्रं ते सर्वमेतत्करिष्यसि। शीघ्रयाने सदा बुद्धिर्धीयते मे विशेषतः ॥०३-६४-५॥
vasa bāhuka bhadraṃ te sarvam etat kariṣyasi। śīghrayāne sadā buddhir dhīyate me viśeṣataḥ॥03-64-5॥
[वस (vasa) - dwell; reside; बाहुक (bāhuka) - Bāhuka (proper noun); भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspicious; good; ते (te) - for you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; शीघ्रयाने (śīghrayāne) - in rapid movement; in swift vehicle; सदा (sadā) - always; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; thought; intention; धीयते (dhīyate) - is placed; is fixed; मे (me) - my; for me; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; particularly;]
(Dwell, Bāhuka, auspiciousness for you, all this you will do. In swift motion always mind is fixed by me especially.)
Reside, Bāhuka. Good fortune to you. You will accomplish all this. My mind is always especially set on swift movement. (03-64-5)
स त्वमातिष्ठ योगं तं येन शीघ्रा हया मम। भवेयुरश्वाध्यक्षोऽसि वेतनं ते शतं शताः ॥०३-६४-६॥
sa tvam ātiṣṭha yogaṃ taṃ yena śīghrā hayā mama। bhaveyur aśvādhyakṣo'si vetanaṃ te śataṃ śatāḥ॥03-64-6॥
[स (sa) - he; but; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आतिष्ठ (ātiṣṭha) - undertake; योगं (yogaṃ) - task; तं (taṃ) - that; येन (yena) - by which; शीघ्राः (śīghrāḥ) - swift; हया (hayā) - horses; मम (mama) - my; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - may become; अश्वाध्यक्षः (aśvādhyakṣaḥ) - superintendent of horses; असि (asi) - you are; वेतनं (vetanaṃ) - salary; ते (te) - to you; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; शताः (śatāḥ) - hundreds;]
(He, you undertake that task by which swift horses of mine may become; superintendent of horses you are; salary to you hundred hundreds.)
So you undertake that task by which my horses may become swift; you are the superintendent of horses; your salary will be hundreds of hundreds. (03-64-6)
त्वामुपस्थास्यतश्चेमौ नित्यं वार्ष्णेयजीवलौ। एताभ्यां रंस्यसे सार्धं वस वै मयि बाहुक ॥०३-६४-७॥
tvām-upasthāsyataś ca imau nityaṃ vārṣṇeya-jīvalau। etābhyāṃ raṃsyase sārdhaṃ vasa vai mayi bāhuka॥03-64-7॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) - you (accusative); उपस्थास्यतश् (upasthāsyataś) - will attend upon; च (ca) - and; इमौ (imau) - these two; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; वार्ष्णेयजीवलौ (vārṣṇeya-jīvalau) - Vārṣṇeya and Jīvala (proper names in dual); एताभ्याम् (etābhyām) - with these two; रंस्यसे (raṃsyase) - you will delight; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; वस (vasa) - dwell; वै (vai) - indeed; मयि (mayi) - with me; बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka;]
("You, these two, Vārṣṇeya and Jīvala, always will attend upon; with these two you will delight together; dwell indeed with me, O Bāhuka." (03-64-7))
"These two, Vārṣṇeya and Jīvala, will always attend upon you; together with them you will find joy. Come, live with me, O Bāhuka." (03-64-7)

evam-ukto nalas-tena nyavasat-tatra pūjitaḥ। ṛtuparṇasya nagare saha vārṣṇeya-jīvālaḥ॥03-64-8॥

स तत्र निवसन्राजा वैदर्भीमनुचिन्तयन्। सायं सायं सदा चेमं श्लोकमेकं जगाद ह ॥०३-६४-९॥
sa tatra nivasanrājā vaidarbhīmanucintayan। sāyaṃ sāyaṃ sadā cemaṃ ślokamekaṃ jagāda ha ॥03-64-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; निवसन् (nivasan) - dwelling; राजा (rājā) - the king; वैदर्भीम् (vaidarbhīm) - Vaidarbhi (the princess of Vidarbha); अनुचिन्तयन् (anucintayan) - pondering upon; सायं (sāyam) - evening; सायं (sāyam) - evening; सदा (sadā) - always; च (ca) - and; इमं (imaṃ) - this; श्लोकम् (ślokam) - verse; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; जगाद (jagāda) - recited; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He there dwelling, the king, pondering upon Vaidarbhi, evening evening always and this one verse indeed recited.)
There, residing, the king, constantly thinking of Vaidarbhi, would recite this one verse every evening. (03-64-9)
क्व नु सा क्षुत्पिपासार्ता श्रान्ता शेते तपस्विनी। स्मरन्ती तस्य मन्दस्य कं वा साद्योपतिष्ठति ॥०३-६४-१०॥
kva nu sā kṣutpipāsārtā śrāntā śete tapasvinī। smarantī tasya mandasya kaṁ vā sā adya upatiṣṭhati॥03-64-10॥
[क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; सा (sā) - she; क्षुत्पिपासा-आर्ता (kṣutpipāsārtā) - afflicted by hunger and thirst; श्रान्ता (śrāntā) - tired; शेते (śete) - lies (down); तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - the ascetic woman; स्मरन्ती (smarantī) - remembering; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मन्दस्य (mandasya) - the slow/dull one; कं (kaṁ) - whom; वा (vā) - or; सा (sā) - she; अद्य (adya) - today; उपतिष्ठति (upatiṣṭhati) - attends;]
(Where indeed she afflicted by hunger and thirst, tired, lies (down), the ascetic woman. Remembering him, the slow one, whom or she today attends.)
Where, indeed, does that ascetic woman, afflicted by hunger and thirst and tired, lie down now? Remembering that slow (one), whom does she attend to today? (03-64-10)
एवं ब्रुवन्तं राजानं निशायां जीवलोऽब्रवीत्। कामेनां शोचसे नित्यं श्रोतुमिच्छामि बाहुक ॥०३-६४-११॥
evaṁ bruvantaṁ rājānaṁ niśāyāṁ jīvalo'bravīt। kāmenāṁ śocase nityaṁ śrotum icchāmi bāhuka ॥03-64-11॥

(Thus, to the king who was speaking, at night Jivala said: "With desire, this, you grieve always; to hear, I wish, O Bāhuka." (03-64-11))

तमुवाच नलो राजा मन्दप्रज्ञस्य कस्यचित्। आसीद्बहुमता नारी तस्या दृढतरं च सः ॥०३-६४-१२॥
tam uvāca nalo rājā mandaprajñasya kasyacit। āsīd bahumatā nārī tasyā dṛḍhataraṃ ca saḥ॥03-64-12॥

(Him spoke Nala king, of someone dull-witted; there was highly-esteemed woman, of her more firmly and he.)
King Nala spoke to him: 'There was a woman greatly esteemed by someone dull-witted, and he was even more firmly (attached) to her.' (03-64-12)
स वै केनचिदर्थेन तया मन्दो व्ययुज्यत। विप्रयुक्तश्च मन्दात्मा भ्रमत्यसुखपीडितः ॥०३-६४-१३॥
sa vai kenacid arthenā tayā mando vyayujyata. viprayuktaś ca mandātmā bhramaty asukhapīḍitaḥ ॥03-64-13॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; केनचित् (kenacit) - by some; अर्थेन (arthena) - with reason; तया (tayā) - by her; मन्दः (mandaḥ) - the fool; वियुज्यत (vyayujyata) - was separated; विप्रयुक्तः (viprayuktaḥ) - being parted; च (ca) - and; मन्दात्मा (mandātmā) - one of dull mind; भ्रमति (bhramati) - wanders; असुखपीडितः (asukhapīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by unhappiness;]
(He indeed by some reason was separated from her, the fool. And being parted, the dull-minded one wanders, afflicted by unhappiness.)
He, indeed, was separated from her for some reason; and being parted, the fool of dull mind wanders about, afflicted by sorrow. (03-64-13)
दह्यमानः स शोकेन दिवारात्रमतन्द्रितः। निशाकाले स्मरंस्तस्याः श्लोकमेकं स्म गायति ॥०३-६४-१४॥
dahyamānaḥ sa śokena divārātram atandritaḥ। niśākāle smaran tasyāḥ ślokam ekaṃ sma gāyati॥03-64-14॥
[दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - burning; सः (saḥ) - he; शोकेन (śokena) - with grief; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without fatigue; निशाकाले (niśākāle) - at night-time; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; श्लोकम् (ślokam) - verse; एकम् (ekam) - one; स्म (sma) - indeed; गायति (gāyati) - sings;]
(Burning he with grief, day and night without fatigue, at night-time remembering of her one verse indeed sings.)
He, burning with grief and untiring day and night, at night remembers her and keeps singing one verse. (03-64-14)
स वै भ्रमन्महीं सर्वां क्वचिदासाद्य किञ्चन। वसत्यनर्हस्तद्दुःखं भूय एवानुसंस्मरन् ॥०३-६४-१५॥
sa vai bhraman mahīṃ sarvāṃ kvacid āsādya kiñcana। vasaty anarhas tad duḥkhaṃ bhūya evānusaṃsmaran ॥03-64-15॥
[स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; भ्रमन् (bhraman) - wandering; महीं (mahīṃ) - earth; सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - entire; क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - something; वसति (vasati) - lives; अनर्हः (anarhaḥ) - unworthy; तत् (tat) - that; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - pain; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुसंस्मरन् (anusaṃsmaran) - continually remembering;]
(He indeed, wandering the entire earth, having somewhere reached something, lives unworthy, that pain again indeed continually remembering.)
He, wandering the whole earth and occasionally finding something, lives undeservingly, constantly recalling that pain again and again. (03-64-15)
सा तु तं पुरुषं नारी कृच्छ्रेऽप्यनुगता वने। त्यक्ता तेनाल्पपुण्येन दुष्करं यदि जीवति ॥०३-६४-१६॥
sā tu taṃ puruṣaṃ nārī kṛcchre'pyanugatā vane। tyaktā tenālpapuṇyena duṣkaraṃ yadi jīvati॥03-64-16॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - that; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; नारी (nārī) - woman; कृच्छ्रेऽपि (kṛcchre'pi) - in hardship also; अनुगता (anugatā) - having followed; वने (vane) - in the forest; त्यक्ता (tyaktā) - abandoned; तेन (tena) - by him; अल्पपुण्येन (alpapuṇyena) - having little merit; दुष्करं (duṣkaram) - difficult; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - she lives;]
(She but that man woman in hardship also having followed in the forest, abandoned by him of little merit, difficult if she lives.)
But although the woman had followed that man even in hardship in the forest, abandoned by that one of little merit, if she lives, it is difficult. (03-64-16)
एका बालानभिज्ञा च मार्गाणामतथोचिता। क्षुत्पिपासापरीता च दुष्करं यदि जीवति ॥०३-६४-१७॥
ekā bālānabhi-jñā ca mārgāṇā-matathocitā। kṣut-pipāsā-parītā ca duṣkaraṃ yadi jīvati॥03-64-17॥
[एका (ekā) - one; female; a single; a; only; बाला (bālā) - girl; child; young girl; अनभिज्ञा (anabhijñā) - ignorant; not knowing; unacquainted; च (ca) - and; मार्गाणाम् (mārgāṇām) - of roads; of the paths; अतथोचिता (atathocitā) - not properly adapted; unaccustomed; क्षुत्पिपासापरीता (kṣut-pipāsā-parītā) - afflicted by hunger and thirst; च (ca) - and; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult; hard to do; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; survives;]
(One young girl, ignorant and also unaccustomed to the roads, afflicted by hunger and thirst, and if she lives, it is difficult.)
If a single young girl who is ignorant and unaccustomed to the roads, and afflicted by hunger and thirst, survives, it is indeed difficult. (3-64-17)
श्वापदाचरिते नित्यं वने महति दारुणे। त्यक्ता तेनाल्पपुण्येन मन्दप्रज्ञेन मारिष ॥०३-६४-१८॥
śvāpadācarite nityaṃ vane mahati dāruṇe। tyaktā tenālpapuṇyena mandaprajñena māriṣa ॥03-64-18॥
[श्वापदाचारिते (śvāpadācarite) - inhabited by wild beasts; shvāpada (wild animal) + ācarita (inhabited); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वने (vane) - in the forest; महति (mahati) - great; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - terrible; त्यक्ता (tyaktā) - abandoned; तेन (tena) - by him; अल्पपुण्येन (alpapuṇyena) - with little merit; मन्दप्रज्ञेन (mandaprajñena) - dull-witted; मारिष (māriṣa) - O dear (lady);]
(In the great, terrible forest, always inhabited by wild beasts, abandoned by him with little merit and dull-witted, O dear (lady).)
O dear, you have been abandoned in the great and terrible forest, always inhabited by wild beasts, by that dull-witted man of little merit. (03-64-18)
इत्येवं नैषधो राजा दमयन्तीमनुस्मरन्। अज्ञातवासमवसद्राज्ञस्तस्य निवेशने ॥०३-६४-१९॥
ityevaṃ naiṣadho rājā damayantīṁ anusmaran। ajñātavāsam avasad rājñas tasya niveśane ॥03-64-19॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this way; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the king of Niṣadha; राजा (rājā) - king; दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - Damayantī; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering; अज्ञातवासम् (ajñātavāsam) - life in concealment; incognito dwelling; अवसत् (avasat) - he dwelled; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the residence;]
(Thus, remembering Damayantī, the king of Niṣadha dwelled incognito in the residence of that king.)
Thus, the king of Niṣadha, remembering Damayantī, lived incognito in the residence of that king. (03-64-19)
