हृतराज्ये नले भीमः सभार्ये प्रेष्यतां गते। द्विजान्प्रस्थापयामास नलदर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥०३-६५-१॥
hṛtarājye nale bhīmaḥ sabhārye preṣyatāṃ gate. dvijānprasthāpayāmāsa naladarśanakāṅkṣayā ॥03-65-1॥
[हृतराज्ये (hṛtarājye) - with the kingdom lost; नले (nale) - when Nala; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; सभार्ये (sabhārye) - together with his wife; प्रेष्यतां (preṣyatām) - to servitude; गते (gate) - having gone; द्विजान् (dvijān) - brahmins; प्रस्थापयामास (prasthāpayāmāsa) - sent forth; नलदर्शनकाङ्क्षया (naladarśanakāṅkṣayā) - with the desire to see Nala;]
(With the kingdom lost, when Nala, together with his wife, had gone to servitude, Bhima sent forth brahmins with the desire to see Nala.)
After Nala, with his wife, had departed into servitude upon losing his kingdom, Bhima sent brahmins in search of Nala out of his longing to see him. (03-65-1)
संदिदेश च तान्भीमो वसु दत्त्वा च पुष्कलम्। मृगयध्वं नलं चैव दमयन्तीं च मे सुताम् ॥०३-६५-२॥
saṃdideśa ca tān bhīmaḥ vasu dattvā ca puṣkalam। mṛgayadhvaṃ nalaṃ caiva damayantīṃ ca me sutām॥03-65-2॥

(Commanded and those Bhīma having given wealth and abundant, search Nala and indeed Damayantī and my daughter.)
Bhīma commanded them, and, having given them abundant wealth, said, "Go search for Nala and Damayantī, my daughter." (03-65-2)
अस्मिन्कर्मणि निष्पन्ने विज्ञाते निषधाधिपे। गवां सहस्रं दास्यामि यो वस्तावानयिष्यति ॥ अग्रहारं च दास्यामि ग्रामं नगरसंमितम् ॥०३-६५-३॥
asmin karmaṇi niṣpanne vijñāte niṣadhādhipe। gavāṃ sahasraṃ dāsyāmi yo vastā vāṇayiṣyati ॥ agrahāraṃ ca dāsyāmi grāmaṃ nagarasammitam ॥03-65-3॥
[अस्मिन्कर्मणि (asmin karmaṇi) - in this act; निष्पन्ने (niṣpanne) - having been accomplished; विज्ञाते (vijñāte) - having been known; निषधाधिपे (niṣadhādhipe) - the lord of Niṣadha; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; यः (yaḥ) - who; वस्तु (vastu) - object; आवानयिष्यति (āvanayiṣyati) - will bring; अग्रहारं (agrahāraṃ) - a gift of land; च (ca) - and; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; ग्रामं (grāmaṃ) - village; नगरसंमितम् (nagarasammitam) - equal to a city;]
(In this act having been accomplished, the lord of Niṣadha having been known, of cows a thousand I will give, who brings the object. An agrahāra and I will give, a village equal to a city.)
After this task is accomplished and the lord of Niṣadha is identified, I will give a thousand cows to whoever brings the object. I will also give an agrahāra — a village equivalent to a city. (03-65-3)
न चेच्छक्याविहानेतुं दमयन्ती नलोऽपि वा। ज्ञातमात्रेऽपि दास्यामि गवां दशशतं धनम् ॥०३-६५-४॥
na ca icchakyā vihānetuṃ damayantī nalo'pi vā। jñātamātre'pi dāsyāmi gavāṃ daśaśataṃ dhanam ॥03-65-4॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इच्छक्या (icchakyā) - by wishing; विहानेतुं (vihānetum) - to separate; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; ज्ञातमात्रे (jñātamātre) - as soon as (it is) known; अपि (api) - even; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I shall give; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; दशशतम् (daśaśatam) - one thousand; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(Not even by wishing is Damayantī or Nala able to be separated; as soon as (it is) known (I) will give ten hundred of cows (as) wealth.)
Nor can Damayantī or even Nala be separated merely by wishing; as soon as it is discovered, I shall give a thousand cows as wealth. (03-65-4)
इत्युक्तास्ते ययुर्हृष्टा ब्राह्मणाः सर्वतोदिशम्। पुरराष्ट्राणि चिन्वन्तो नैषधं सह भार्यया ॥०३-६५-५॥
ityuktās te yayur hṛṣṭā brāhmaṇāḥ sarvatodiśam। pura-rāṣṭrāṇi cinvanto naiṣadhaṃ saha bhāryayā॥03-65-5॥

Thus addressed, the joyful Brāhmaṇas went in all directions, searching the cities and kingdoms for Nala, along with his wife. (03-65-5)
ततश्चेदिपुरीं रम्यां सुदेवो नाम वै द्विजः। विचिन्वानोऽथ वैदर्भीमपश्यद्राजवेश्मनि ॥ पुण्याहवाचने राज्ञः सुनन्दासहितां स्थिताम् ॥०३-६५-६॥
tataś cedi-purīṃ ramyāṃ sudevo nāma vai dvijaḥ। vicinvāno 'tha vaidarbhīm apaśyad rāja-veśmani ॥ puṇyāha-vācane rājñaḥ sunandā-sahitāṃ sthitām ॥03-65-6॥

मन्दप्रख्यायमानेन रूपेणाप्रतिमेन ताम्। पिनद्धां धूमजालेन प्रभामिव विभावसोः ॥०३-६५-७॥
mandaprakhyāyamānena rūpeṇāpratimena tām। pinaddhāṃ dhūmajālena prabhām iva vibhāvasoḥ ॥03-65-7॥
[मन्दप्रख्यायमानेन (mandaprakhyāyamānena) - by a form appearing dim; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by (her) form; अप्रतिमेन (apratimena) - unequalled; ताम् (tām) - her; पिनद्धां (pinaddhāṃ) - enwrapped; धूमजालेन (dhūmajālena) - with a net of smoke; प्रभाम् (prabhām) - radiance; इव (iva) - like; विभावसोः (vibhāvasoḥ) - of fire;]
(Her, by a form appearing dim, by an unequalled form, enwrapped with a net of smoke, like the radiance of fire.)
She, whose peerless form appeared dim, was enwrapped in a veil of smoke, like the radiance of fire (hidden within smoke). (03-65-7)
तां समीक्ष्य विशालाक्षीमधिकं मलिनां कृशाम्। तर्कयामास भैमीति कारणैरुपपादयन् ॥०३-६५-८॥
tāṁ samīkṣya viśālākṣīm adhikaṁ malināṁ kṛśām। tarkayām āsa bhaimīti kāraṇair upapādayan ॥03-65-8॥

(Her having observed, large-eyed, excessively dirty, emaciated, he speculated "bhaimī" thus, by reasons, proving.)
Having observed her—large-eyed, exceedingly dirty and emaciated—he reasoned, "She is the daughter of the earth," supporting this by logical reasons. (03-65-8)

यथेयं मे पुरा दृष्टा तथारूपेयमङ्गना। कृतार्थोऽस्म्यद्य दृष्ट्वेमां लोककान्तामिव श्रियम् ॥०३-६५-९॥
yatheyam me purā dṛṣṭā tathārūpeyamaṅganā। kṛtārtho'smyadya dṛṣṭvemāṃ lokakāntāmiva śriyam ॥03-65-9॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); मे (me) - my; पुरा (purā) - formerly; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; तथारूपा (tathārūpā) - of similar form; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); अङ्गना (aṅganā) - woman; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is fulfilled; अस्मि (asmi) - am; अद्य (adya) - today; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; इमाम् (imām) - this (accusative feminine); लोककान्ताम् (lokakāntām) - the delight of the world; इव (iva) - like; श्रियं (śriyam) - Lakṣmī (goddess of fortune);]
(Just as this (woman) was seen by me formerly of such a form, this woman — I am fulfilled today, having seen this one who is like Lakṣmī, delight of the world.)
Just as I saw this woman of such a form before, today I am fulfilled, having seen her, who is like Lakṣmī, the delight of the world. (03-65-9)
पूर्णचन्द्राननां श्यामां चारुवृत्तपयोधराम्। कुर्वन्तीं प्रभया देवीं सर्वा वितिमिरा दिशः ॥०३-६५-१०॥
pūrṇacandrānanāṃ śyāmāṃ cāruvṛttapayodharām। kurvantīṃ prabhayā devīṃ sarvā vitimirā diśaḥ ॥03-65-10॥

चारुपद्मपलाशाक्षीं मन्मथस्य रतीमिव। इष्टां सर्वस्य जगतः पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभामिव ॥०३-६५-११॥
cāru-padma-palāśākṣīṃ manmathasya ratīm iva। iṣṭāṃ sarvasya jagataḥ pūrṇa-candra-prabhām iva ॥03-65-11॥

विदर्भसरसस्तस्माद्दैवदोषादिवोद्धृताम्। मलपङ्कानुलिप्ताङ्गीं मृणालीमिव तां भृशम् ॥०३-६५-१२॥
vidarbhasarasas tasmād daivadōṣād ivoddhṛtām. malapaṅkānuliptāṅgīṃ mṛṇālīm iva tāṃ bhṛśam ॥03-65-12॥
[विदर्भसरसः (vidarbhasarasaḥ) - of the Vidarbha lake; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; दैवदोषात् (daivadoṣāt) - because of misfortune; इव (iva) - like; उद्धृताम् (uddhṛtām) - lifted out; मलपङ्कानुलिप्ताङ्गीम् (malapaṅkānuliptāṅgīm) - with limbs smeared by dirt and mud; मृणालीम् (mṛṇālīm) - lotus stem; इव (iva) - like; ताम् (tām) - her; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - strongly;]
(Of the Vidarbha lake from that because of misfortune like lifted out, with limbs smeared by dirt and mud, like a lotus stem, her strongly.)
Just as a lotus stem, lifted out of the Vidarbha lake by misfortune and heavily smeared with mud and dirt, so too was she greatly affected. (03-65-12)
पौर्णमासीमिव निशां राहुग्रस्तनिशाकराम्। पतिशोकाकुलां दीनां शुष्कस्रोतां नदीमिव ॥०३-६५-१३॥
paurṇamāsīm iva niśāṃ rāhu-grasta-niśā-karām। pati-śoka-ākulāṃ dīnāṃ śuṣka-srotāṃ nadīm iva ॥03-65-13॥

She was like the full-moon night whose moon is eclipsed by Rāhu, like a river with its stream dried up, overcome with grief for her husband and distressed. (03-65-13)
विध्वस्तपर्णकमलां वित्रासितविहङ्गमाम्। हस्तिहस्तपरिक्लिष्टां व्याकुलामिव पद्मिनीम् ॥०३-६५-१४॥
vidhvastaparṇakamalāṃ vitrāsitavihaṅgamām। hastihastaparikliṣṭāṃ vyākulām iva padminīm ॥03-65-14॥

सुकुमारीं सुजाताङ्गीं रत्नगर्भगृहोचिताम्। दह्यमानामिवोष्णेन मृणालीमचिरोद्धृताम् ॥०३-६५-१५॥
sukumārīṃ sujātāṅgīṃ ratnagarbhagṛhocitām। dahyamānāmivoṣṇena mṛṇālīmaciroddhṛtām॥03-65-15॥

रूपौदार्यगुणोपेतां मण्डनार्हाममण्डिताम्। चन्द्रलेखामिव नवां व्योम्नि नीलाभ्रसंवृताम् ॥०३-६५-१६॥
rūpaudāryaguṇopetāṃ maṇḍanārhāmamaṇḍitām। candralekhām iva navāṃ vyomni nīlābhra-saṃvṛtām॥03-65-16॥
[रूप (rūpa) - form; appearance; औदार्य (audārya) - nobility; generosity; गुण (guṇa) - qualities; virtues; उपेताम् (upetām) - endowed with; मण्डन-अर्हाम् (maṇḍana-arhām) - worthy of adornment; अ-मण्डिताम् (amaṇḍitām) - not adorned; चन्द्र-लेखाम् (candra-lekhām) - (like a) crescent moon; इव (iva) - like; as if; नवाम् (navām) - new; fresh; व्योम्नि (vyomni) - in the sky; नील-अभ्र-संवृताम् (nīla-abhra-saṃvṛtām) - covered by dark clouds;]
(Endowed with qualities of form and nobility, worthy of adornment though unadorned, like a new crescent moon in the sky covered by dark clouds.)
Possessing the qualities of beauty and nobility, fit for ornamentation though unadorned, she was like a new crescent moon in the sky veiled by dark clouds. (03-65-16)
कामभोगैः प्रियैर्हीनां हीनां बन्धुजनेन च। देहं धारयतीं दीनां भर्तृदर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥०३-६५-१७॥
kāmabhogaiḥ priyair hīnāṃ hīnāṃ bandhujanena ca। dehaṃ dhārayatīṃ dīnāṃ bhartṛdarśanakāṅkṣayā॥03-65-17॥
[कामभोगैः (kāmabhogaiḥ) - by pleasures of desire; प्रियैः (priyaiḥ) - by beloved ones; हीनां (hīnāṃ) - bereft; हीनां (hīnāṃ) - deprived; बन्धुजनेन (bandhujanena) - by relatives; च (ca) - and; देहं (deham) - body; धारयतीं (dhārayatīṃ) - maintaining; दीनां (dīnāṃ) - unhappy; भर्तृदर्शनकाङ्क्षया (bhartṛdarśanakāṅkṣayā) - with longing for husband's sight;]
(Bereft of pleasures of desire, bereft of beloved ones, and by relatives, maintaining her body, unhappy, with longing for husband's sight.)
Deprived of sensual pleasures and beloved company, without the support of relatives, she maintained her body in misery, yearning for the sight of her husband. (03-65-17)
भर्ता नाम परं नार्या भूषणं भूषणैर्विना। एषा विरहिता तेन शोभनापि न शोभते ॥०३-६५-१८॥
bhartā nāma paraṁ nāryā bhūṣaṇaṁ bhūṣaṇair vinā. eṣā virahitā tena śobhanāpi na śobhate ॥03-65-18॥
[भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; नाम (nāma) - indeed; परम् (param) - the highest; नार्याः (nāryāḥ) - of a woman; भूषणम् (bhūṣaṇam) - ornament; भूषणैः (bhūṣaṇaiḥ) - with ornaments; विना (vinā) - without; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); विरहिता (virahitā) - deprived; तेन (tena) - of him; शोभना (śobhanā) - beautiful; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; शोभते (śobhate) - shines; ॥०३-६५-१८॥ (॥03-65-18॥) - ;]
(Husband indeed the highest ornament of a woman; without ornaments. This one deprived of him, even beautiful, does not shine.)
The husband is truly the greatest ornament of a woman; without him, however adorned with other ornaments, even a beautiful woman does not appear radiant. (03-65-18)
दुष्करं कुरुतेऽत्यर्थं हीनो यदनया नलः। धारयत्यात्मनो देहं न शोकेनावसीदति ॥०३-६५-१९॥
duṣkaraṃ kurute'tyarthaṃ hīno yadanayā nalaḥ। dhārayaty ātmano dehaṃ na śokenāvasīdatि ॥03-65-19॥
[दुष्करं (duṣkaraṃ) - difficult to achieve; कुरुते (kurute) - does; अत्यर्थं (atyarthaṃ) - exceedingly; हीनः (hīnaḥ) - deprived; यदनया (yad anayā) - by whom (this one/her); नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; धारयति (dhārayati) - bears; आत्मनः (ātmano) - of himself; देहं (dehaṃ) - body; न (na) - not; शोकेन (śokena) - by grief; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - sinks;]
(The exceedingly deprived Nala does a difficult thing by her, keeps his own body, and does not sink by grief.)
Nala, who has been deprived by her, accomplishes what is most difficult—he preserves his own life and does not succumb to sorrow. (03-65-19)
इमामसितकेशान्तां शतपत्रायतेक्षणाम्। सुखार्हां दुःखितां दृष्ट्वा ममापि व्यथते मनः ॥०३-६५-२०॥
imām asita-keśāntām śata-patrāyatekṣaṇām। sukhārhām duḥkhitāṃ dṛṣṭvā mamāpi vyathate manaḥ॥03-65-20॥

(This (woman) with dark hair at the end, with eyes like lotus petals, deserving of happiness, afflicted with suffering, on seeing, my even is distressed mind.)
On seeing this woman, with dark hair at the end and eyes like lotus petals, who deserves happiness but is suffering, even my mind is distressed. (03-65-20)
कदा नु खलु दुःखस्य पारं यास्यति वै शुभा। भर्तुः समागमात्साध्वी रोहिणी शशिनो यथा ॥०३-६५-२१॥
kadā nu khalu duḥkhasya pāraṃ yāsyati vai śubhā। bhartuḥ samāgamātsādhvī rohiṇī śaśino yathā ॥03-65-21॥
[कदा (kadā) - when; नु (nu) - indeed; खलु (khalu) - certainly; दुःखस्य (duḥkhasya) - of suffering; पारम् (pāram) - end; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will reach; वै (vai) - truly; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious lady; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of her husband; समागमात् (samāgamāt) - from union; साध्वी (sādhvī) - the virtuous one; रोहिणी (rohiṇī) - Rohiṇī; शशिनः (śaśinaḥ) - of the moon; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(When indeed certainly of suffering end will reach truly (the) auspicious lady, from union with her husband, the virtuous Rohiṇī just as (with) the moon.)
When indeed will this virtuous lady reach the end of her suffering, as the virtuous Rohiṇī does upon reunion with her husband, the Moon? (03-65-21)
अस्या नूनं पुनर्लाभान्नैषधः प्रीतिमेष्यति। राजा राज्यपरिभ्रष्टः पुनर्लब्ध्वेव मेदिनीम् ॥०३-६५-२२॥
asyā nūnaṃ punarlābhān naiṣadhaḥ prītim eṣyati. rājā rājyaparibhraṣṭaḥ punarlabdhveva medinīm ॥03-65-22॥
[अस्या (asyāḥ) - of her; नूनं (nūnam) - surely; पुनर्लाभात् (punarlābhāt) - by regaining; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the king of Niṣadha (Nala); प्रीतिम् (prītim) - joy; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will attain; राजा (rājā) - the king; राज्यपरिभ्रष्टः (rājyaparibhraṣṭaḥ) - deprived of his kingdom; पुनर्लब्ध्वा (punarlabdhvā) - having regained; इव (iva) - just as; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth (land);]
(Of her surely by regaining, Niṣadha will attain joy. The king deprived of his kingdom, just as having regained the earth.)
Surely, by regaining her, Niṣadha (Nala) will attain joy, just as a king who, having been deprived of his kingdom, rejoices upon recovering his land. (03-65-22)
तुल्यशीलवयोयुक्तां तुल्याभिजनसंयुताम्। नैषधोऽर्हति वैदर्भीं तं चेयमसितेक्षणा ॥०३-६५-२३॥
tulyaśīlavayoyuktāṃ tulyābhijanasamyutām। naiṣadho'rhati vaidarbhīṃ taṃ ceyamasitekṣaṇā ॥03-65-23॥
[तुल्यशीलवयोयुक्तां (tulyaśīla-vayaḥ-yuktām) - endowed with similar character and age; तुल्याभिजनसंयुताम् (tulyābhijana-saṃyutām) - joined with equally noble lineage; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the king of Nishadha; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; वैदर्भीं (vaidarbhīm) - the princess of Vidarbha; तं च (taṃ ca) - and him; इयम् (iyam) - this (lady); असितेक्षणा (asitekṣaṇā) - the dark-eyed;]
(Endowed with similar character and age, joined with equally noble lineage, the king of Nishadha is worthy of the princess of Vidarbha; and him, this dark-eyed lady (is worthy of).)
She, who is endowed with similar character, age, and noble lineage, is worthy of the king of Nishadha; and he, in turn, is worthy of the dark-eyed princess of Vidarbha. (03-65-23)
युक्तं तस्याप्रमेयस्य वीर्यसत्त्ववतो मया। समाश्वासयितुं भार्यां पतिदर्शनलालसाम् ॥०३-६५-२४॥
yuktaṃ tasyāprameyasya vīryasattvavato mayā। samāśvāsayituṃ bhāryāṃ patidarśanalālasām॥03-65-24॥
[युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - proper; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अप्रमेयस्य (aprameyasya) - immeasurable; वीर्यसत्त्ववतो (vīryasattvavato) - of [one who possesses] strength and courage; मया (mayā) - by me; समाश्वासयितुं (samāśvāsayituṃ) - to comfort; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; पतिदर्शनलालसाम् (patidarśanalālasām) - longing to see her husband;]
(Proper, of him immeasurable, of strength and courage, by me, to comfort, wife, longing to see her husband.)
It is proper for me, who belong to him of immeasurable might and strength, to comfort his wife, who is longing to see her husband. (03-65-24)
अयमाश्वासयाम्येनां पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम्। अदृष्टपूर्वां दुःखस्य दुःखार्तां ध्यानतत्पराम् ॥०३-६५-२५॥
ayam āśvāsayāmy enāṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanām। adṛṣṭapūrvāṃ duḥkhasya duḥkhārtāṃ dhyānatatparām॥03-65-25॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this (I); आश्वासयामि (āśvāsayāmi) - I console; एनाम् (enām) - her; पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् (pūrṇacandranibhānanām) - with countenance like the full moon; अदृष्टपूर्वाम् (adṛṣṭapūrvām) - never before seen; दुःखस्य (duḥkhasya) - of sorrow; दुःखार्ताम् (duḥkhārtām) - distressed by sorrow; ध्यानतत्पराम् (dhyānatatparām) - devoted to meditation;]
(This I console her, with countenance like the full moon, never before seen, of sorrow, distressed by sorrow, devoted to meditation.)
I am consoling her—she whose face resembles the full moon, who has never before been seen, who is stricken by sorrow and devoted to meditation. (03-65-25)

evaṃ vimṛśya vividhaiḥ kāraṇair lakṣaṇaiś ca tām। upagamya tato bhaimīṃ sudevo brāhmaṇo'bravīt ॥03-65-26॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विमृश्य (vimṛśya) - having considered; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; कारणैः (kāraṇaiḥ) - reasons; लक्षणैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ) - with characteristics; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भैमीम् (bhaimīm) - daughter of Bhīma; सुदेवः (sudevaḥ) - Sudeva; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, having considered her with various reasons and characteristics, approaching then Bhīma's daughter, Sudeva the Brāhmaṇa said.)
Thus, after considering her in various respects, Sudeva the Brāhmaṇa approached Bhīma's daughter and spoke. (03-65-26)
अहं सुदेवो वैदर्भि भ्रातुस्ते दयितः सखा। भीमस्य वचनाद्राज्ञस्त्वामन्वेष्टुमिहागतः ॥०३-६५-२७॥
ahaṃ sudevo vaidarbhī bhrātus te dayitaḥ sakhā। bhīmasya vacanād rājñas tvām anveṣṭum ihāgataḥ॥03-65-27॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सुदेवः (sudevaḥ) - Sudeva; वैदर्भि (vaidarbhī) - of Vidarbha; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (your) brother; ते (te) - your; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; सखा (sakhā) - friend; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अन्वेष्टुम् (anveṣṭum) - to search (for); इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - (I have) come;]
(I Sudeva of Vidarbha, of (your) brother your beloved friend, by the word of Bhīma, of the king, (to) you, to search (for), here, (I have) come.)
I am Sudeva of Vidarbha, your brother’s beloved friend. By the command of Bhīma, the king, I have come here to search for you. (03-65-27)
कुशली ते पिता राज्ञि जनित्री भ्रातरश्च ते। आयुष्मन्तौ कुशलिनौ तत्रस्थौ दारकौ च ते ॥ त्वत्कृते बन्धुवर्गाश्च गतसत्त्वा इवासते ॥०३-६५-२८॥
kuśalī te pitā rājñi janitrī bhrātaraś ca te। āyuṣmantau kuśalinau tatrasthau dārakau ca te॥ tvatkṛte bandhuvargāś ca gatasattvā ivāsate॥03-65-28॥
[कुशली (kuśalī) - well (is); ते (te) - your; पिता (pitā) - father; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; जनित्री (janitrī) - mother; भ्रातरश्च (bhrātaraś ca) - and brothers; ते (te) - your; आयुष्मन्तौ (āyuṣmantau) - long-lived (both); कुशलिनौ (kuśalinau) - well (are both); तत्रस्थौ (tatrasthau) - residing there (are both); दारकौ (dārakau) - boys (sons); च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; त्वत्कृते (tvatkṛte) - for your sake; बन्धुवर्गाश्च (bandhuvargāś ca) - and relatives; गतसत्त्वा (gatasattvā) - bereft of spirit; इव (iva) - as if; आसते (āsate) - are (they);]
(Well your father, O queen, (is); (your) mother and brothers (are well). Long-lived, well, residing there, (are your) sons also. For your sake, (your) relatives as if bereft of spirit are.)
Your father is well, O queen, as are your mother and brothers. Your two sons residing there are also well and long-lived. But for your sake, your relatives remain as if bereft of spirit. (03-65-28)
अभिज्ञाय सुदेवं तु दमयन्ती युधिष्ठिर। पर्यपृच्छत्ततः सर्वान्क्रमेण सुहृदः स्वकान् ॥०३-६५-२९॥
abhijñāya sudevaṃ tu damayantī yudhiṣṭhira। paryapṛcchattataḥ sarvānkrameṇa suhṛdaḥ svakān ॥03-65-29॥
[अभिज्ञाय (abhijñāya) - having recognized; सुदेवं (sudevaṃ) - Sudeva (proper noun, name); तु (tu) - but; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī (proper noun, name); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira (vocative); पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - enquired; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; स्वकान् (svakān) - her own;]
(Having recognized Sudeva, but Damayantī, O Yudhiṣṭhira, then enquired all her own friends in order.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, having recognized Sudeva, Damayantī then asked all her friends, one after another. (03-65-29)
रुरोद च भृशं राजन्वैदर्भी शोककर्शिता। दृष्ट्वा सुदेवं सहसा भ्रातुरिष्टं द्विजोत्तमम् ॥०३-६५-३०॥
ruroda ca bhṛśaṃ rājan vaidarbhī śoka-karśitā। dṛṣṭvā sudevaṃ sahasā bhrātuḥ iṣṭaṃ dvijottamam॥03-65-30॥
[रुरोद (ruroda) - she wept; च (ca) - and; भृशं (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - the princess of Vidarbha; शोककर्शिता (śoka-karśitā) - emaciated by grief; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुदेवं (sudevam) - Sudeva; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of her brother; इष्टं (iṣṭam) - dear; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - the best among the twice-born (brahmins);]
(She wept and exceedingly, O king, the princess of Vidarbha, emaciated by grief, having seen Sudeva suddenly, her brother's dear best among the twice-born.)
O king, the princess of Vidarbha, emaciated by grief, wept bitterly when she suddenly saw Sudeva, the dear and best of the twice-born, cherished by her brother. (03-65-30)
ततो रुदन्तीं तां दृष्ट्वा सुनन्दा शोककर्शिताम्। सुदेवेन सहैकान्ते कथयन्तीं च भारत ॥०३-६५-३१॥
tato rudantīṁ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā sunandā śokakarśitām। sudevena sahaikānte kathayantīṁ ca bhārata ॥03-65-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रुदन्तीम् (rudantīm) - weeping (her); ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुनन्दा (sunandā) - Sunanda; शोककर्शिताम् (śokakarśitām) - consumed by grief; सुदेवेन (sudevena) - with Sudeva; सह (saha) - together; एकान्ते (ekānte) - in seclusion; कथयन्तीम् (kathayantīm) - speaking (her); च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Then, having seen her weeping, Sunanda, consumed by grief, with Sudeva, together in seclusion, speaking, and, O Bharata.)
Then, O Bharata, Sunanda, seeing her weeping and consumed by grief, with Sudeva, together in private, while she was also speaking, (acted thus). (03-65-31)
जनित्र्यै प्रेषयामास सैरन्ध्री रुदते भृशम्। ब्राह्मणेन समागम्य तां वेद यदि मन्यसे ॥०३-६५-३२॥
janitryai preṣayām āsa sairandhrī rudate bhṛśam। brāhmaṇena samāgamya tāṃ veda yadi manyase॥03-65-32॥
[जनित्र्यै (janitryai) - to the mother; प्रेषयामास (preṣayām āsa) - sent; सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhri (Draupadi); रुदते (rudate) - weeping; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by the Brāhmaṇa; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having met; तां (tāṃ) - her; वेद (veda) - knows; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(To the mother, Sairandhri, weeping greatly, sent. By the Brāhmaṇa, having met her, knows, if you think.)
Sairandhri, weeping greatly, sent (word) to the mother. If you think the Brāhmaṇa will know her by meeting her. (03-65-32)
अथ चेदिपतेर्माता राज्ञश्चान्तःपुरात्तदा। जगाम यत्र सा बाला ब्राह्मणेन सहाभवत् ॥०३-६५-३३॥
atha cedipater mātā rājñaś cāntaḥpurāt tadā। jagāma yatra sā bālā brāhmaṇena sahābhavat॥03-65-33॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चेदिपतेः (cedipateḥ) - of the king of Cedi; माता (mātā) - mother; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; अन्तःपुरात् (antaḥpurāt) - from the inner palace; तदा (tadā) - then; जगाम (jagāma) - went; यत्र (yatra) - where; सा (sā) - she; बाला (bālā) - the maiden; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - with the brāhmaṇa; सह (saha) - along with; अभवत् (abhavat) - was;]
(Then the mother of the king of Cedi and the king from the inner palace at that time went where that maiden was with the brāhmaṇa.)
Then, the mother of the king of Cedi and the king, from the inner palace at that time, went to where that maiden was together with the brāhmaṇa. (03-65-33)
ततः सुदेवमानाय्य राजमाता विशां पते। पप्रच्छ भार्या कस्येयं सुता वा कस्य भामिनी ॥०३-६५-३४॥
tataḥ sudevam ānāyya rājamātā viśāṁ pate। papraccha bhāryā kasya iyaṁ sutā vā kasya bhāminī॥03-65-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुदेवम् (sudevam) - Sudēva (proper name, accusative); आनाय्य (ānāyya) - having brought; राजमाता (rājamātā) - queen mother; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; कस्य (kasya) - whose; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; सुता (sutā) - daughter; वा (vā) - or; कस्य (kasya) - whose; भामिनी (bhāminī) - radiant woman;]
(Then, having brought Sudēva, the queen mother, O lord of men, asked: 'Wife of whom is this, or daughter of whom is this radiant woman?')
Then, after bringing Sudēva, the queen mother, O lord of men, asked: 'Whose wife is this radiant woman, or whose daughter is she?' (03-65-34)
कथं च नष्टा ज्ञातिभ्यो भर्तुर्वा वामलोचना। त्वया च विदिता विप्र कथमेवङ्गता सती ॥०३-६५-३५॥
kathaṁ ca naṣṭā jñātibhyo bharturvā vāmalocanā। tvayā ca viditā vipra katham evaṅgatā satī ॥03-65-35॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; नष्टा (naṣṭā) - lost; ज्ञातिभ्यः (jñātibhyaḥ) - from relatives; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - from husband; वा (vā) - or; वामलोचना (vāmalocanā) - O lovely-eyed (one); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; विदिता (viditā) - known; विप्र (vipra) - O Brahmin; कथम् (katham) - how; एवम् (evam) - thus; गता (gatā) - (you) gone; सती (satī) - chaste woman;]
(How and lost from the relatives or from the husband, O lovely-eyed! By you and known, O Brahmin, how thus gone the chaste woman?)
O lovely-eyed one, how did you become lost from your relatives or your husband, and how did you come to be known by you, O Brahmin, in this way, O chaste woman? (03-65-35)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं त्वत्तो ज्ञातुं सर्वमशेषतः। तत्त्वेन हि ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छन्त्या देवरूपिणीम् ॥०३-६५-३६॥
etadicchāmyahaṁ tvatto jñātuṁ sarvamaśeṣataḥ। tattvena hi mamācakṣva pṛcchantyā devarūpiṇīm॥03-65-36॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; in reality; हि (hi) - surely; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; पृच्छन्त्या (pṛcchantyā) - having asked; देवरूपिणीम् (devarūpiṇīm) - (to) one with a divine form;]
(This I desire I from you to know all completely. Truly surely to me tell to the asking (one) with a divine form.)
I desire to know all this completely from you. Truly, tell me everything, for I, appearing in a divine form, am asking. (03-65-36)
एवमुक्तस्तया राजन्सुदेवो द्विजसत्तमः। सुखोपविष्ट आचष्ट दमयन्त्या यथातथम् ॥०३-६५-३७॥
evam uktas tayā rājan sudevo dvija-sattamaḥ। sukha-upaviṣṭa ācaṣṭa damayantyā yathā tatham ॥03-65-37॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken (to); तया (tayā) - by her; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुदेवः (sudevaḥ) - Sudeva; द्विजसत्तमः (dvija-sattamaḥ) - best among Brāhmaṇas; सुखोपविष्टः (sukha-upaviṣṭaḥ) - comfortably seated; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - related; दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - to Damayantī; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so;]
(Thus spoken to by her, O king, Sudeva, the best among Brāhmaṇas, comfortably seated, related to Damayantī as it was.)
O king, when thus addressed by her, Sudeva, the foremost of Brāhmaṇas, comfortably seated, told Damayantī everything as it was. (03-65-37)
