Bṛhadaśva said.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य पर्णादो नाम वै द्विजः। प्रत्येत्य नगरं भैमीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-६८-१॥
atha dīrghasya kālasya parṇādo nāma vai dvijaḥ। pratyetya nagaraṃ bhaimīm idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥03-68-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; दीर्घस्य (dīrghasya) - of (a) long; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्णादः (parṇādaḥ) - Parṇāda (proper noun); नाम (nāma) - named; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (Brahmin); प्रत्येत्य (pratyetya) - after approaching; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; भैमीम् (bhaimīm) - Bhaimī (proper noun, daughter of Bheema); इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Now, after a long time, Parṇāda named indeed twice-born, after approaching the city to Bhaimī, this word spoke.)
Then, after a long period, the twice-born named Parṇāda indeed, having arrived at the city, spoke these words to Bhaimī. (03-68-1)
नैषधं मृगयानेन दमयन्ति दिवानिशम्। अयोध्यां नगरीं गत्वा भाङ्गस्वरिरुपस्थितः ॥०३-६८-२॥
naiṣadhaṃ mṛgayānena damayanti divāniśam। ayodhyāṃ nagarīṃ gatvā bhāṅgasvarir upasthitaḥ ॥03-68-2॥
[नैषधं (naiṣadam) - Nishadha (the kingdom; accusative); मृगयानेन (mṛgayānena) - by hunting (with the hunt); दमयन्ति (damayanti) - damayanti (the queen; subject); दिवानिशम् (divāniśam) - day and night; अयोध्यां (ayodhyām) - to Ayodhya (the city; accusative); नगरीं (nagarīm) - the city (accusative); गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; भाङ्गस्वरिः (bhāṅgasvariḥ) - the one with broken voice; उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - has arrived;]
(Nishadha by hunting Damayanti day and night; to Ayodhya city having gone, the one with broken voice has arrived.)
Damayanti hunted in the kingdom of Nishadha day and night. Having gone to the city of Ayodhya, the one with the broken voice has arrived. (03-68-2)
श्रावितश्च मया वाक्यं त्वदीयं स महाजने। ऋतुपर्णो महाभागो यथोक्तं वरवर्णिनि ॥०३-६८-३॥
śrāvitaś ca mayā vākyaṃ tvadīyaṃ sa mahā-jane। ṛtuparṇo mahā-bhāgo yathoktaṃ vara-varṇini॥03-68-3॥
[श्रावितश्च (śrāvitaś ca) - has been caused to be heard and; मया (mayā) - by me; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - statement; त्वदीयं (tvadīyaṃ) - your; स महाजने (sa mahājane) - in the great assembly; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - most fortunate one; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as stated; वरवर्णिनि (vara-varṇini) - O beautiful lady;]
(Has been caused to be heard also by me the statement of yours in the great assembly. Ṛtuparṇa, the most fortunate one, as stated, O beautiful lady.)
O beautiful lady, your statement has also been announced by me in the great assembly as stated, to Ṛtuparṇa, the most fortunate one. (03-68-3)
तच्छ्रुत्वा नाब्रवीत्किञ्चिदृतुपर्णो नराधिपः। न च पारिषदः कश्चिद्भाष्यमाणो मयासकृत् ॥०३-६८-४॥
tacchrutvā nābravīt kiñcid ṛtuparṇo narādhipaḥ। na ca pāriṣadaḥ kaścid bhāṣyamāṇo mayāsakṛt॥03-68-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; न (na) - not; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पारिषदः (pāriṣadaḥ) - courtiers; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; भाष्यमाणः (bhāṣyamāṇaḥ) - speaking; मया (mayā) - by me; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly;]
(That having heard, not spoke anything Ṛtuparṇa the king; and not any courtiers, though spoken to repeatedly by me.)
Having heard that, King Ṛtuparṇa did not say anything, nor did any of the courtiers, though I repeatedly spoke to them. (03-68-4)
अनुज्ञातं तु मां राज्ञा विजने कश्चिदब्रवीत्। ऋतुपर्णस्य पुरुषो बाहुको नाम नामतः ॥०३-६८-५॥
anujñātaṃ tu māṃ rājñā vijane kaścid abravīt। ṛtuparṇasya puruṣo bāhuko nāma nāmataḥ ॥03-68-5॥
[अनुज्ञातं (anujñātam) - permitted; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; विजने (vijane) - in a secluded place; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; ऋतुपर्णस्य (ṛtuparṇasya) - of Ṛtuparṇa; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; नाम (nāma) - named; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - by name;]
(Permitted but me by the king in a secluded place someone spoke: of Ṛtuparṇa the man Bāhuka named by name.)
But permitted by the king, someone spoke to me in a secluded place: the man of Ṛtuparṇa named Bāhuka by name. (03-68-5)
सूतस्तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य विरूपो ह्रस्वबाहुकः। शीघ्रयाने सुकुशलो मृष्टकर्ता च भोजने ॥०३-६८-६॥
sūtas tasya narendrasya virūpo hrasvabāhukaḥ। śīghrayāne sukuśalo mṛṣṭakartā ca bhojane॥03-68-6॥
[सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नरेन्द्रस्य (narendrasya) - of the king; विरूपः (virūpaḥ) - ugly; ह्रस्वबाहुकः (hrasvabāhukaḥ) - having short arms; शीघ्रयाने (śīghrayāne) - skilled in fast driving; सुकुशलः (sukuśalaḥ) - very adept; मृष्टकर्ता (mṛṣṭakartā) - good preparer; च (ca) - and; भोजने (bhojane) - in food;]
(The charioteer of that king, ugly, having short arms, skilled in fast driving, very adept, good preparer and in food.)
The charioteer of that king was ugly and short-armed; he was skilled in driving swiftly, very capable, and an excellent cook. (03-68-6)
स विनिःश्वस्य बहुशो रुदित्वा च मुहुर्मुहुः। कुशलं चैव मां पृष्ट्वा पश्चादिदमभाषत ॥०३-६८-७॥
sa viniḥśvasya bahuśo ruditvā ca muhurmuhuḥ। kuśalaṃ caiva māṃ pṛṣṭvā paścādidam abhāṣata ॥03-68-7॥
[स (sa) - he; विनिःश्वस्य (viniḥśvasya) - having deeply sighed; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; रुदित्वा (ruditvā) - having wept; च (ca) - and; मुःमुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again; कुशलं (kuśalam) - well-being; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having inquired; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; इदम् (idam) - this; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(He, having deeply sighed many times, and having wept again and again, having indeed inquired of my well-being, afterwards spoke this.)
He sighed deeply many times, wept repeatedly, and after asking about my well-being, then spoke the following words. (03-68-7)
वैषम्यमपि सम्प्राप्ता गोपायन्ति कुलस्त्रियः। आत्मानमात्मना सत्यो जितस्वर्गा न संशयः ॥ रहिता भर्तृभिश्चैव न क्रुध्यन्ति कदाचन ॥०३-६८-८॥
vaiṣamyam api samprāptā gopāyanti kulastriyaḥ। ātmānam ātmanā satyo jitasvargā na saṃśayaḥ ॥ rahitā bhartṛbhiś caiva na krudhyanti kadācana ॥03-68-8॥
[वैषम्यम् (vaiṣamyam) - adversity; अपि (api) - even; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - having come to; गोपायन्ति (gopāyanti) - protect; कुलस्त्रियः (kulastriyaḥ) - noble women; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - themselves; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by themselves; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truly; जितस्वर्गाः (jitasvargāḥ) - conquerors of heaven; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; रहिता (rahitāḥ) - deprived; भर्तृभिः (bhartṛbhiḥ) - of husbands; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; क्रुध्यन्ति (krudhyanti) - become angry; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time;]
(Even when adversity has come, noble women protect themselves by themselves. Truly, they are conquerors of heaven, there is no doubt. Deprived of husbands also, indeed, they do not become angry at any time. (03-68-8))
Even when faced with adversity, noble women protect themselves on their own. Truly, they are conquerors of heaven—there is no doubt. Even when deprived of their husbands, they never become angry. (03-68-8)
विषमस्थेन मूढेन परिभ्रष्टसुखेन च। यत्सा तेन परित्यक्ता तत्र न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥०३-६८-९॥
viṣamasthena mūḍhena paribhraṣṭasukhena ca। yatsā tena parityaktā tatra na krodhdhumarhati ॥03-68-9॥
[विषमस्थेन (viṣamasthena) - by one situated in adversity; मूढेन (mūḍhena) - by the deluded; परिभ्रष्टसुखेन (paribhraṣṭasukhena) - by one who has lost happiness; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; सा (sā) - she; तेन (tena) - by him; परित्यक्ता (parityaktā) - abandoned; तत्र (tatra) - in that; न (na) - not; क्रोद्धुम् (krodhdhum) - to become angry; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit;]
(By one situated in adversity, by the deluded, by one who has lost happiness, and the woman who is abandoned by him, in that, should not become angry.)
A woman abandoned by a man who is suffering adversity, deluded, and deprived of happiness, should not become angry in such a situation. (03-68-9)
प्राणयात्रां परिप्रेप्सोः शकुनैर्हृतवाससः। आधिभिर्दह्यमानस्य श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥०३-६८-१०॥
prāṇayātrāṃ pariprepsoḥ śakunair hṛtavāsasaḥ। ādhibhir dahyamānasya śyāmā na krodhum arhati॥03-68-10॥
[प्राणयात्राम् (prāṇayātrām) - maintenance of life; परिप्रेप्सोः (pariprepsoḥ) - of one desiring (only) to preserve; शकुनैः (śakunaiḥ) - by birds; हृतवाससः (hṛtavāsasaḥ) - whose garment has been taken away; आधिभिः (ādhibhiḥ) - by afflictions; दह्यमानस्य (dahyamānasya) - of one suffering; श्यामा (śyāmā) - Śyāmā (the lady Śyāmā, here: Sītā); न (na) - not; क्रोद्धुम् (krodhum) - to become angry; अर्हति (arhati) - ought;]
(Śyāmā ought not to become angry at one suffering from afflictions, whose garment has been taken away by birds, desiring only the maintenance of life.)
Śyāmā should not be angry at a person, suffering due to afflictions, whose clothing was taken away by birds while he struggled just to keep alive. (03-68-10)
सत्कृतासत्कृता वापि पतिं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम्। भ्रष्टराज्यं श्रिया हीनं श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥०३-६८-११॥
satkṛtāsatkṛtā vāpi patiṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam। bhraṣṭarājyaṁ śriyā hīnaṁ śyāmā na krodhumarhati॥03-68-11॥
[सत्कृता (satkṛtā) - honored; असत्कृता (asatkṛtā) - dishonored; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; पतिम् (patim) - husband; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; आगतम् (āgatam) - come; भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa) - deprived (of); राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; श्रियाः (śriyā) - prosperity; हीनम् (hīnam) - bereft (of); श्यामा (śyāmā) - the dark-complexioned (woman); न (na) - not; क्रोद्धुम् (krodhum) - to be angry; अर्हति (arhati) - ought;]
(Honored or dishonored, even (a wife), having seen the husband thus come, deprived of kingdom, bereft of prosperity, the dark-complexioned (woman) ought not to be angry.)
Whether honored or dishonored, even after seeing her husband come in such a state—deprived of kingdom and bereft of prosperity—the dark-complexioned woman should not be angry. (03-68-11)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा त्वरितोऽहमिहागतः। श्रुत्वा प्रमाणं भवती राज्ञश्चैव निवेदय ॥०३-६८-१२॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā tvarito'ham ihāgataḥ। śrutvā pramāṇaṃ bhavatī rājñaś caiva nivedaya ॥03-68-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद् (tad) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - evidence; भवती (bhavatī) - you (respectful, fem.); राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - to the king; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निवेदय (nivedaya) - inform;]
(Of him that speech having heard quickly I here have come. Having heard the evidence, you indeed inform the king.)
Having heard his statements, I quickly came here. After hearing this evidence, you should convey it to the king as well. (03-68-12)
एतच्छ्रुत्वाश्रुपूर्णाक्षी पर्णादस्य विशां पते। दमयन्ती रहोऽभ्येत्य मातरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-६८-१३॥
etat-śrutvā-aśru-pūrṇa-akṣī parṇāt asya viśāṃ pate। damayantī rahaḥ abhyetya mātaraṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥03-68-13॥
[एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) (śrutvā) - having heard; अश्रुपूर्णाक्षी (aśrupūrṇākṣī) (aśru-pūrṇa-akṣī) - with eyes filled with tears; पर्णात् (parṇāt) (parṇāt) - from the leaf; अस्य (asya) (asya) - his; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the peoples; दमयन्ती (damayantī) (damayantī) - Damayantī; रहः (rahaḥ) (rahaḥ) - in private; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) (abhyetya) - having approached; मातरम् (mātaram) (mātaram) - mother; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) (pratyabhāṣata) - she addressed;]
(This having heard, with eyes filled with tears, from the leaf, O lord of the peoples, Damayantī, in private, having approached, mother, she addressed.)
Having heard this, with her eyes full of tears, Damayantī, after coming in private from the leaf, addressed her mother, O lord of the peoples. (03-68-13)
अयमर्थो न संवेद्यो भीमे मातः कथञ्चन। त्वत्संनिधौ समादेक्ष्ये सुदेवं द्विजसत्तमम् ॥०३-६८-१४॥
ayam artho na saṃvedyo bhīme mātaḥ kathaṃcana। tvat-saṃnidhau samādekṣye sudevaṃ dvija-sattamam ॥03-68-14॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - matter; न (na) - not; संवेद्यः (saṃvedyaḥ) - to be perceived; भीमे (bhīme) - by Bhima; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; त्वत्-संनिधौ (tvat-saṃnidhau) - in your presence; समादेक्ष्ये (samādekṣye) - I will carefully observe; सुदेवं (sudevaṃ) - Sudeva; द्विज-सत्तमम् (dvija-sattamam) - the best of Brahmins;]
(This matter not to be perceived by Bhima, O mother, in any way. In your presence I will carefully observe Sudeva, the best of Brahmins.)
O mother, Bhima must not know of this matter in any way. In your presence, I will carefully observe Sudeva, the best of Brahmins. (03-68-14)
यथा न नृपतिर्भीमः प्रतिपद्येत मे मतम्। तथा त्वया प्रयत्तव्यं मम चेत्प्रियमिच्छसि ॥०३-६८-१५॥
yathā na nṛpatir bhīmaḥ pratipadyeta me matam। tathā tvayā prayattavyaṃ mama cet priyam icchasi॥03-68-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; न (na) - not; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; प्रतिपद्येत (pratipadyeta) - would accept; मे (me) - my; मतम् (matam) - opinion; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्रयत्तव्यम् (prayattavyam) - must be endeavored; मम (mama) - to me; चेत् (cet) - if; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Just as King Bhīma would not accept my opinion, so by you must it be endeavored, to me, if dear you desire.)
Just as King Bhīma would not accept my opinion, in the same way, you must make an effort, if you wish to please me. (03-68-15)
यथा चाहं समानीता सुदेवेनाशु बान्धवान्। तेनैव मङ्गलेनाशु सुदेवो यातु माचिरम् ॥ समानेतुं नलं मातरयोध्यां नगरीमितः ॥०३-६८-१६॥
yathā cāhaṃ samānītā sudevenāśu bāndhavān। tenaiva maṅgalenāśu sudevo yātu māciram॥ samānetuṃ nalaṃ mātarayodhyāṃ nagarīmitaḥ॥03-68-16॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; समानीता (samānītā) - brought; सुदेवेन (sudevena) - by Sudeva; आशु (āśu) - quickly; बान्धवान् (bāndhavān) - relatives; तेनैव (tena eva) - by him indeed; मङ्गलेन (maṅgalena) - with auspiciousness; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सुदेवः (sudevaḥ) - Sudeva; यातु (yātu) - should go; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; समानेतुं (samānetum) - to bring; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; मातर (mātara) - mother; अयोध्यां (ayodhyāṃ) - to Ayodhya; नगरीम् (nagarīm) - city; इतः (itaḥ) - from here;]
(Just as I and quickly brought by Sudeva relatives, by him indeed with auspiciousness quickly Sudeva should go, not for long, to bring Nala, mother, to Ayodhya city from here.)
Just as I have swiftly brought the relatives through Sudeva, let Sudeva himself, with auspiciousness, quickly go and bring Nala and mother to the city of Ayodhya from here without delay. (03-68-16)
विश्रान्तं च ततः पश्चात्पर्णादं द्विजसत्तमम्। अर्चयामास वैदर्भी धनेनातीव भामिनी ॥०३-६८-१७॥
viśrāntaṁ ca tataḥ paścāt parṇādaṁ dvijasattamam। arcayām āsa vaidarbhī dhanena atīva bhāminī ॥03-68-17॥
[विश्रान्तं (viśrāntam) - rested; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; पर्णादम् (parṇādam) - Parṇāda (a proper name); द्विजसत्तमम् (dvijasattamam) - best of Brāhmaṇas; अर्चयाम् (arcayām) - worshipped (causative); आस (āsa) - (she) did; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - the princess of Vidarbha; धनेन (dhanena) - with wealth; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; भामिनी (bhāminī) - beautiful woman;]
(And then, afterwards, Parṇāda, the best of Brāhmaṇas, having rested, Vaidehi, the exceedingly beautiful woman, worshipped with wealth.)
Then, after Parṇāda, the foremost of Brāhmaṇas, had rested, Vaidehi, the exceedingly beautiful woman, worshipped him with wealth. (03-68-17)
नले चेहागते विप्र भूयो दास्यामि ते वसु। त्वया हि मे बहु कृतं यथा नान्यः करिष्यति ॥ यद्भर्त्राहं समेष्यामि शीघ्रमेव द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-६८-१८॥
nale cehāgate vipra bhūyo dāsyāmi te vasu। tvayā hi me bahu kṛtaṃ yathā nānyaḥ kariṣyati ॥ yadbhartṛāhaṃ sameṣyāmi śīghrameva dvijottama ॥03-68-18॥
[नले (nale) - when Nala; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; आगते (āgate) - has come; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; ते (te) - to you; वसु (vasu) - wealth; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - for me; बहु (bahu) - much; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - has been done; यथा (yathā) - such as; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; यद् (yad) - that; भर्त्रा (bhartṛā) - with my husband; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; समेष्यामि (sameṣyāmi) - shall meet; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of brāhmaṇas;]
(When Nala has come here, O brāhmaṇa, again I will give wealth to you. Indeed, by you for me much has been done such as not another will do. That with my husband I shall meet quickly indeed, O best of brāhmaṇas. (03-68-18))
When Nala comes here, O brāhmaṇa, I will again give you wealth, for you have done for me much that no one else would do. I shall soon be reunited with my husband, O best of brāhmaṇas. (03-68-18)
एवमुक्तोऽर्चयित्वा तामाशीर्वादैः सुमङ्गलैः। गृहानुपययौ चापि कृतार्थः स महामनाः ॥०३-६८-१९॥
evam-ukto'rcayitvā tām-āśīrvādaiḥ sumaṅgalaiḥ। gṛhān-upayayau cāpi kṛtārthaḥ sa mahā-manāḥ॥03-68-19॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; ताम् (tām) - her; आशीर्वादैः (āśīrvādaiḥ) - with blessings; सुमङ्गलैः (sumaṅgalaiḥ) - with auspicious words; गृहान् (gṛhān) - home; उपययौ (upayayau) - he approached; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - having attained his purpose; स (sa) - he; महामनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Thus, having been addressed, after worshipping her with blessings and auspicious words, to home he approached and also, having attained his purpose, he, the great-minded.)
Having been thus addressed, he worshipped her with blessings and auspicious words; then, the great-minded one, his purpose accomplished, also went home. (03-68-19)
ततश्चानाय्य तं विप्रं दमयन्ती युधिष्ठिर। अब्रवीत्संनिधौ मातुर्दुःखशोकसमन्विता ॥०३-६८-२०॥
tataś cānāyya taṃ vipraṃ damayantī yudhiṣṭhira। abravīt saṃnidhau mātur duḥkhaśokasamanvitā ॥03-68-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; आनाय्य (ānāyya) - having brought; तं (taṃ) - that; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - brāhmaṇa; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; संनिधौ (saṃnidhau) - in the presence; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; दुःखशोकसमन्विता (duḥkhaśokasamanvitā) - filled with sorrow and grief;]
(Then and having brought that brāhmaṇa, Damayantī, Yudhiṣṭhira, said in the presence of (her) mother, filled with sorrow and grief.)
Then, having brought that brāhmaṇa, Damayantī, filled with sorrow and grief, spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira in her mother's presence. (03-68-20)
गत्वा सुदेव नगरीमयोध्यावासिनं नृपम्। ऋतुपर्णं वचो ब्रूहि पतिमन्यं चिकीर्षती ॥ आस्थास्यति पुनर्भैमी दमयन्ती स्वयंवरम् ॥०३-६८-२१॥
gatvā sudeva nagarīm-ayodhyāvāsinaṁ nṛpam। ṛtuparṇaṁ vaco brūhi patim-anyaṁ cikīrṣatī ॥ āsthāsyati punar bhaimī damayantī svayaṁvaram ॥03-68-21॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सुदेव (sudeva) - Sudeva; नगरीम् (nagarīm) - the city; अयोध्यावासिनं (ayodhyāvāsinaṁ) - inhabitant of Ayodhya; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; ऋतुपर्णं (ṛtuparṇaṁ) - Ṛtuparṇa; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - say; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अन्यं (anyaṁ) - other; चिकीर्षती (cikīrṣatī) - desiring to make; आस्थास्यति (āsthāsyati) - will convene; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भैमी (bhaimī) - daughter of Bhīma; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; स्वयंवरम् (svayaṁvaram) - self-choice (marriage ceremony);]
(Having gone, Sudeva, to the city, to the king, the inhabitant of Ayodhya, say words to Ṛtuparṇa: desiring to choose another husband, Damayantī, the daughter of Bhīma, will convene the self-choice again.)
Go, Sudeva, to the city and speak to King Ṛtuparṇa of Ayodhya: "Damayantī, daughter of Bhīma, is desiring another husband and will hold a svayaṁvara again." (03-68-21)
तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वशः। यथा च गणितः कालः श्वोभूते स भविष्यति ॥०३-६८-२२॥
tatra gacchanti rājāno rājaputrāś ca sarvaśaḥ। yathā ca gaṇitaḥ kālaḥ śvobhūte sa bhaviṣyati॥03-68-22॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; राजपुत्राः (rājaputrāḥ) - princes; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - altogether; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; गणितः (gaṇitaḥ) - computed; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; श्वोभूते (śvobhūte) - when tomorrow arrives; स (sa) - he; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(There go kings, and princes altogether; as and computed time when tomorrow arrives, he will be.)
There, kings and princes all go together; when the computed time arises tomorrow, it will happen. (03-68-22)
यदि सम्भावनीयं ते गच्छ शीघ्रमरिंदम। सूर्योदये द्वितीयं सा भर्तारं वरयिष्यति ॥ न हि स ज्ञायते वीरो नलो जीवन्मृतोऽपि वा ॥०३-६८-२३॥
yadi sambhāvanīyaṃ te gaccha śīghram ariṃdama। sūryodaye dvitīyaṃ sā bhartāraṃ varayiṣyati ॥ na hi sa jñāyate vīro nalo jīvan mṛto'pi vā ॥03-68-23॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; सम्भावनीयं (sambhāvanīyam) - possible; ते (te) - for you; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes; सूर्योदये (sūryodaye) - at sunrise; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - a second (husband); सा (sā) - she; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; वरयिष्यति (varayiṣyati) - will choose; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; स (sa) - he; ज्ञायते (jñāyate) - is recognized; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or;]
(If possible for you, go quickly O subduer of foes. At sunrise, she will choose a second husband. Indeed, that hero Nala is not recognized, whether living or even dead.)
If it is possible for you, go quickly, O subduer of foes. At sunrise, she will choose another husband. For that heroic Nala is not recognized as living or dead. (03-68-23)
एवं तया यथोक्तं वै गत्वा राजानमब्रवीत्। ऋतुपर्णं महाराज सुदेवो ब्राह्मणस्तदा ॥०३-६८-२४॥
evaṃ tayā yathoktaṃ vai gatvā rājānam abravīt। ṛtuparṇaṃ mahārāja sudevo brāhmaṇas tadā ॥03-68-24॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तया (tayā) - by her; यथोक्तं (yathoktam) - as was told; वै (vai) - indeed; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; राजानम् (rājānam) - king (accusative singular); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ऋतुपर्णं (ṛtuparṇam) - Rtuparṇa (king Rtuparṇa, accusative singular); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सुदेवः (sudevaḥ) - Sudeva (proper noun); ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brahmin; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus by her, as was told indeed, having gone, the king he addressed; Ritupurna, O great king, Sudeva the Brahmin then.)
Thus, as instructed by her, Sudeva the Brahmin went and addressed King Rituparna, O great king, at that time. (03-68-24)
