श्रुत्वा वचः सुदेवस्य ऋतुपर्णो नराधिपः। सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया वाचा बाहुकं प्रत्यभाषत ॥०३-६९-१॥
śrutvā vacaḥ sudevasya ṛtuparṇo narādhipaḥ। sāntvayañ ślakṣṇayā vācā bāhukaṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥03-69-1॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; सुदेवस्य (sudevasya) - of Sudeva; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - soothing; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; बाहुकं (bāhukaṃ) - Bāhuka; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Having heard the words of Sudeva, Ṛtuparṇa the king, soothing with gentle speech, addressed Bāhuka.)
King Ṛtuparṇa, having heard Sudeva's words, consoled Bāhuka with gentle speech and spoke to him. (03-69-1)
विदर्भान्यातुमिच्छामि दमदन्त्याः स्वयंवरम्। एकाह्ना हयतत्त्वज्ञ मन्यसे यदि बाहुक ॥०३-६९-२॥
vidarbhān yātum icchāmi damadantyāḥ svayaṃvaram। ekāhnā haya-tattva-jña manyase yadi bāhuka ॥03-69-2॥
[विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to Vidarbha; (the land or capital of the Vidarbhas); यातुम् (yātum) - to go; (to proceed); इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; (I desire); दमदन्त्याः (damadantyāḥ) - of Damayantī; (genitive case, of Damayantī); स्वयंवरम् (svayaṃvaram) - svayamvara; (rite of choosing one’s husband); एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; (within a single day); हयतत्त्वज्ञ (haya-tattva-jña) - one who is knowledgeable in horse-lore; (horse-science knower); मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; (do you consider); यदि (yadi) - if; (in case); बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka; (vocative, addressing Bāhuka);]
(To Vidarbha to go I wish, of Damayantī the svayamvara. In one day, O knower of horse-lore, do you think, if, O Bāhuka.)
I wish to go to Vidarbha for Damayantī's svayamvara. If you consider it possible, O Bāhuka, can the journey be completed in one day, O knower of horses? (03-69-2)
एवमुक्तस्य कौन्तेय तेन राज्ञा नलस्य ह। व्यदीर्यत मनो दुःखात्प्रदध्यौ च महामनाः ॥०३-६९-३॥
evam uktasya kaunteya tena rājñā nalasya ha। vyadīryata mano duḥkhāt pradadhyau ca mahā-manāḥ॥03-69-3॥

(Thus having been spoken to, O son of Kunti, by that king Nala indeed, his mind was broken from sorrow, and the great-minded (one) brooded.)
O son of Kunti, thus addressed by King Nala, his mind broke from sorrow, and the great-minded one brooded. (3-69-3)
दमयन्ती भवेदेतत्कुर्याद्दुःखेन मोहिता। अस्मदर्थे भवेद्वायमुपायश्चिन्तितो महान् ॥०३-६९-४॥
damayantī bhaved etat kuryād duḥkhena mohitā। asmadarthe bhavet vā ayam upāyaḥ cintito mahān॥03-69-4॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; (proper noun, name of a woman); भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; may be; (optative of 'bhū'); एतत् (etat) - this; (pronoun); कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - she may do; may do; (optative of 'kṛ'); दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by grief; through suffering; मोहिता (mohitā) - deluded; confounded; अस्मदर्थे (asmadarthe) - for our sake; for us; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; may become; वा (vā) - or; अयम् (ayam) - this; (masculine pronoun); उपायः (upāyaḥ) - means; method; चिन्तितः (cintitaḥ) - thought (out); considered; महान् (mahān) - great; significant;]
(Damayantī may become this, she may do (it), deluded by grief. For our sake may be or this great method is thought out.)
Damayantī, being deluded by grief, may do this; for our sake, either this may happen, or this great means has been considered. (03-69-4)
नृशंसं बत वैदर्भी कर्तुकामा तपस्विनी। मया क्षुद्रेण निकृता पापेनाकृतबुद्धिना ॥०३-६९-५॥
nṛśaṁsaṁ bata vaidarbhī kartukāmā tapasvinī। mayā kṣudreṇa nikṛtā pāpenākṛtabuddhinā॥03-69-5॥
[नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruel; बत (bata) - indeed; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - the princess of Vidarbha (proper noun Sītā); कर्तुकामा (kartukāmā) - desirous to do; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic woman; मया (mayā) - by me; क्षुद्रेण (kṣudreṇa) - by the low; निकृता (nikṛtā) - offended; पापेन (pāpena) - by the sinful; अकृतबुद्धिना (akṛtabuddhinā) - by the one without intelligence;]
(Cruel indeed the princess of Vidarbha, desirous to do, ascetic woman, by me—the low, offended, by the sinful, by the one without intelligence.)
Indeed, the ascetic princess of Vidarbha, desirous to act, has been offended by me, who am low, sinful, and lacking understanding. (03-69-5)
स्त्रीस्वभावश्चलो लोके मम दोषश्च दारुणः। स्यादेवमपि कुर्यात्सा विवशा गतसौहृदा ॥ मम शोकेन संविग्ना नैराश्यात्तनुमध्यमा ॥०३-६९-६॥
strīsvabhāvaś calo loke mama doṣaś ca dāruṇaḥ। syād evam api kuryāt sā vivaśā gata-sauhṛdā॥ mama śokena saṁvignā nairāśyāt tanumadhyamā॥03-69-6॥

(The nature of women (is) fickle in the world; my fault (is) also harsh; thus indeed, even so, she might act, being helpless, having lost affection. By my sorrow, distressed, from hopelessness, the slender-waisted (woman).)
The nature of women is fickle in this world, and my fault is severe; even so, she might act in this manner, being helpless and having lost affection. The slender-waisted lady, distressed by my sorrow and overcome by hopelessness. (03-69-6)
न चैवं कर्हिचित्कुर्यात्सापत्या च विशेषतः। यदत्र तथ्यं पथ्यं च गत्वा वेत्स्यामि निश्चयम् ॥ ऋतुपर्णस्य वै काममात्मार्थं च करोम्यहम् ॥०३-६९-७॥
na caivaṃ karhicit kuryāt sāpatyā ca viśeṣataḥ। yad atra tathyaṃ pathyaṃ ca gatvā vetsyāmi niścayam॥ ṛtuparṇasya vai kāmam ātmārthaṃ ca karomy aham॥03-69-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; सापत्या (sāpatyā) - with children; च (ca) - and; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; यत् (yat) - what; अत्र (atra) - here; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - truth; पथ्यम् (pathyaṃ) - what is proper; च (ca) - and; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; वेत्स्यामि (vetsyāmi) - I shall know; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - certainly; ऋतुपर्णस्य (ṛtuparṇasya) - of Ṛtuparṇa; वै (vai) - indeed; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; आत्मार्थं (ātmārthaṃ) - for self; च (ca) - and; करोमि (karomi) - I do; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Not thus ever should do, with children and especially; what here is true and proper, having gone, I shall know certainly. Of Ṛtuparṇa indeed desire and for self, I do, I.)
One should never act thus, especially when children are involved; I will go and find out for certain what is true and proper here. For Ṛtuparṇa's desire and for myself, I am doing this. (03-69-7)
इति निश्चित्य मनसा बाहुको दीनमानसः। कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेदमृतुपर्णं नराधिपम् ॥०३-६९-८॥
iti niścitya manasā bāhuko dīnamānasaḥ. kṛtāñjaliruvācedam ṛtuparṇaṃ narādhipam ॥03-69-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having resolved; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; दीनमानसः (dīnamānasaḥ) - dejected at heart; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; ऋतुपर्णम् (ṛtuparṇam) - to Ṛtuparṇa; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king (lord of men);]
(Thus, having resolved with his mind, Bāhuka, dejected at heart, with joined palms, said this to Ṛtuparṇa, the king.)
Having thus resolved in his mind, Bāhuka, with a dejected heart and joined palms, spoke these words to King Ṛtuparṇa. (03-69-8)
प्रतिजानामि ते सत्यं गमिष्यसि नराधिप। एकाह्ना पुरुषव्याघ्र विदर्भनगरीं नृप ॥०३-६९-९॥
pratijānāmi te satyaṁ gamiṣyasi narādhipa। ekāhnā puruṣavyāghra vidarbhanagarīṁ nṛpa॥03-69-9॥
[प्रतिजानामि (pratijānāmi) - I promise; ते (te) - to you; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truly; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; एकाह्ना (ekāhnā) - in one day; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; विदर्भनगरीं (vidarbhanagarīṁ) - the city of Vidarbha; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(I promise to you truly, you will go, O lord of men, in one day, O tiger among men, to the city of Vidarbha, O king.)
I truly promise you, O king, that in one day, O tiger among men, you will reach the city of Vidarbha. (03-69-9)
ततः परीक्षामश्वानां चक्रे राजन्स बाहुकः। अश्वशालामुपागम्य भाङ्गस्वरिनृपाज्ञया ॥०३-६९-१०॥
tataḥ parīkṣāmaśvānāṃ cakre rājans bāhukaḥ। aśvaśālāmupāgamya bhāṅgasvarinṛpājñayā ॥03-69-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परीक्षाम् (parīkṣām) - examination; अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - of the horses; चक्रे (cakre) - did; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; अश्वशालाम् (aśvaśālām) - to the stable; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; भाङ्गस्वरि (bhāṅgasvari) - with a broken voice; नृपाज्ञया (nṛpājñayā) - by the order of the king;]
(Then Bāhuka, O king, did examination of the horses, having approached the stable, by the order of the king with a broken voice.)
Then, O king, Bāhuka examined the horses by going to the stable as ordered by the king with a broken voice. (03-69-10)
स त्वर्यमाणो बहुश ऋतुपर्णेन बाहुकः। अध्यगच्छत्कृशानश्वान्समर्थानध्वनि क्षमान् ॥०३-६९-११॥
sa tvaryamāṇo bahuśa ṛtuparṇena bāhukaḥ। adhyagacchat kṛśānaśvān samarthān adhvani kṣamān॥03-69-11॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वर्यमाणः (tvaryamāṇaḥ) - being urged on; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - repeatedly; ऋतुपर्णेन (ṛtuparṇena) - by Ṛtuparṇa; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - went over; कृशानश्वान् (kṛśa-anaśvān) - lean horses; समर्थान् (samarthān) - capable; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the road; क्षमन् (kṣamān) - enduring;]
(He, being urged on repeatedly by Ṛtuparṇa, Bāhuka, went over (with) lean, capable horses enduring on the road.)
Bāhuka, repeatedly urged on by Ṛtuparṇa, drove the lean but capable horses, enduring along the road. (03-69-11)
तेजोबलसमायुक्तान्कुलशीलसमन्वितान्। वर्जिताँल्लक्षणैर्हीनैः पृथुप्रोथान्महाहनून् ॥ शुद्धान्दशभिरावर्तैः सिन्धुजान्वातरंहसः ॥०३-६९-१२॥
tejobalasamāyuktāṅkulāśīlasamanvitān। varjitāṃllakṣaṇairhīnaiḥ pṛthuprothānmahāhanūn ॥ śuddhāndaśabhirāvartaiḥ sindhujānvātaraṃhasaḥ ॥03-69-12॥
[तेजस्-बल-समायुक्तान् (tejas-bala-samāyuktān) - endowed with brilliance and strength; कुल-शील-समन्वितान् (kula-śīla-samanvitān) - possessing noble lineage and character; वर्जितान् (varjitān) - devoid of; लक्षणैः-हीनैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ-hīnaiḥ) - defective with marks; पृथु-प्रोथान् (pṛthu-prothān) - having broad jaws; महा-हनून् (mahā-hanūn) - with great chins; शुद्धान् (śuddhān) - pure; दशभिः-आवर्तैः (daśabhiḥ-āvartaiḥ) - with ten whorls; सिन्धु-जान् (sindhu-jān) - born in the river; वात-रंहसः (vāta-raṃhasaḥ) - with the speed of wind;]
(Endowed with brilliance and strength, possessing noble lineage and character, devoid of those defective with marks, having broad jaws and great chins; pure, with ten whorls, born in the river, and with the speed of wind.)
They were possessed of brilliance and strength, noble in lineage and character, lacking any with defective marks, having broad jaws and great chins; faultless, with ten whorls, born from the river, and possessing the speed of the wind. (03-69-12)
दृष्ट्वा तानब्रवीद्राजा किञ्चित्कोपसमन्वितः। किमिदं प्रार्थितं कर्तुं प्रलब्धव्या हि ते वयम् ॥०३-६९-१३॥
dṛṣṭvā tān abravīd rājā kiñcit-kopa-samanvitaḥ। kim idaṃ prārthitaṃ kartuṃ pralabdhavyā hi te vayam ॥03-69-13॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तान् (tān) - them; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजा (rājā) - the king; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; कोप (kopa) - anger; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed with; किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रार्थितम् (prārthitam) - requested; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; प्रलब्धव्या (pralabdhavyā) - are to be gained; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - by you; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Having seen them, the king, somewhat endowed with anger, said: 'What is this, requested to do? Are we, indeed, to be gained by you?')
Seeing them, the king, with some anger, said: 'What is this request? Do you think we are to be easily obtained by you?' (03-69-13)
कथमल्पबलप्राणा वक्ष्यन्तीमे हया मम। महानध्वा च तुरगैर्गन्तव्यः कथमीदृशैः ॥०३-६९-१४॥
katham-alpa-bala-prāṇāḥ vakṣyanti ime hayā mama। mahān adhvā ca turagaiḥ gantavyaḥ katham īdṛśaiḥ ॥03-69-14॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; अल्पबलप्राणाः (alpa-bala-prāṇāḥ) - of little strength and vital energy; वक्ष्यन्ति (vakṣyanti) - will carry (they); इमे (ime) - these; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; मम (mama) - my; महान् (mahān) - great; अध्वा (adhvā) - journey; च (ca) - and; तुरगैः (turagaiḥ) - by horses; गन्तव्यः (gantavyaḥ) - to be gone; कथम् (katham) - how; ईदृशैः (īdṛśaiḥ) - such as these;]
(How of little strength and vital energy will carry these horses of mine? Great journey and by horses is to be gone, how (is it possible) with such as these?)
How will these horses of mine, who have little strength and vitality, be able to carry (me)? The journey is long and must be made by horses—how can it be done with animals like these? (3-69-14)

एते हया गमिष्यन्ति विदर्भान्नात्र संशयः। अथान्यान्मन्यसे राजन्ब्रूहि कान्योजयामि ते ॥०३-६९-१५॥
ete hayā gamiṣyanti vidarbhān nātra saṁśayaḥ। athānyān manyase rājan brūhi kān yojayāmi te ॥03-69-15॥
[एते (ete) - these; हया (hayā) - horses; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to Vidarbha (the region); न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; अथ (atha) - but; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; राजन् (rājan) - O King; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; कान् (kān) - which (ones); योजयामि (yojayāmi) - shall I yoke; ते (te) - for you;]
(These horses will go to Vidarbha; here, there is no doubt. But if you consider others, O King, tell (me) which (ones) shall I yoke for you.)
These horses will reach Vidarbha; there is no doubt here. But if you wish others, O King, tell me which ones I shall yoke for you. (03-69-15)

tvam eva haya-tattva-jñaḥ kuśalaś ca asi bāhuka। yān manyase samarthān tvam kṣipram tān eva yojaya ॥03-69-16॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; हयतत्त्वज्ञः (haya-tattva-jñaḥ) - knower of the essence of horses; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - expert; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - are; बाहुक (bāhuka) - Bāhuka; यान् (yān) - whom; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider; समर्थान् (samarthān) - capable; त्वम् (tvam) - you; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; तान् (tān) - them; एव (eva) - only; योजय (yojaya) - join (yoke);]
(You indeed, knower of the essence of horses, expert and are, Bāhuka; whom you consider capable, you quickly them only join (yoke).)
You alone are the expert and knower of the nature of horses, O Bāhuka. Whomever you consider capable, yoke only those quickly. (03-69-16)

tataḥ sadaśvāṃś caturaḥ kulaśīlasamanvitān | yojayāmāsa kuśalo javayuktān rathe naraḥ ॥03-69-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सदश्वान् (sadaśvān) - good horses; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; कुलशीलसमन्वितान् (kulaśīlasamanvitān) - endowed with noble lineage and good character; योजयामास (yojayāmāsa) - joined; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - the skillful (one); जवयुक्तान् (javayuktān) - endowed with swiftness; रथे (rathe) - to the chariot; नरः (naraḥ) - the man;]
(Then four good horses endowed with noble lineage and good character, endowed with swiftness, the skillful man joined to the chariot.)
Then, the skillful man harnessed to the chariot four good horses of noble lineage, good character, and great speed. (03-69-17)
ततो युक्तं रथं राजा समारोहत्त्वरान्वितः। अथ पर्यपतन्भूमौ जानुभिस्ते हयोत्तमाः ॥०३-६९-१८॥
tato yuktaṃ rathaṃ rājā samārohat-tvarānvitaḥ। atha paryapatan-bhūmau jānubhis-te hayottamāḥ॥03-69-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; after that; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - yoked; fastened; joined; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; राजा (rājā) - king; समारोहत्त्वरान्वितः (samārohat-tvarānvitaḥ) - endowed with the urgency (tvarā) for mounting up (samāroh); अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; पर्यपतन् (paryapatan) - moved around; turned about; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; जानुभिः (jānubhiḥ) - with knees; ते (te) - those; हयोत्तमाः (hayottamāḥ) - the best horses;]
(Then, the king, endowed with haste for mounting, yoked the chariot. Then, those best horses, with their knees, moved around on the ground.)
Then, the king yoked the chariot and, full of urgency, mounted it. Thereafter, those excellent horses circled about on the ground with their knees. (03-69-18)
ततो नरवरः श्रीमान्नलो राजा विशां पते। सान्त्वयामास तानश्वांस्तेजोबलसमन्वितान् ॥०३-६९-१९॥
tato naravaraḥ śrīmān nalo rājā viśāṃ pate। sāntvayāmāsa tān aśvān tejobala-samanvitān ॥03-69-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नरवरः (naravaraḥ) - best of men; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; विशां (viśām) - of people; पते (pate) - O lord; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; तान् (tān) - those; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; तेजोबलसमन्वितान् (tejobala-samanvitān) - endowed with brightness and strength;]
(Then the best of men, the prosperous king Nala, O lord of the people, consoled those horses endowed with brightness and strength.)
Then the noble Nala, best among men and prosperous king, O lord of the people, consoled those horses endowed with vigor and strength. (03-69-19)
रश्मिभिश्च समुद्यम्य नलो यातुमियेष सः। सूतमारोप्य वार्ष्णेयं जवमास्थाय वै परम् ॥०३-६९-२०॥
raśmibhiś ca samudyamya nalo yātum iyeṣa saḥ। sūtam āropya vārṣṇeyaṃ javam āsthāya vai param ॥03-69-20॥
[रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - with reins; च (ca) - and; समुद्यम्य (samudyamya) - having prepared thoroughly; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala (the charioteer); यातुम् (yātum) - to go; इयेष (iyeṣa) - desired; सः (saḥ) - he; सूतम् (sūtam) - the charioteer; आरोप्य (āropya) - having caused to mount; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇeyam) - Vārṣṇeya (Krishna, as descendant of Vrishni); जवम् (javam) - speed; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; वै (vai) - indeed; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(With reins and having prepared thoroughly, Nala desired to go; having caused the charioteer Vārṣṇeya to mount, and having assumed indeed supreme speed.)
Harnessing the reins and preparing thoroughly, Nala wished to depart; after seating the charioteer Vārṣṇeya and adopting the greatest speed, he set out. (03-69-20)
ते चोद्यमाना विधिना बाहुकेन हयोत्तमाः। समुत्पेतुरिवाकाशं रथिनं मोहयन्निव ॥०३-६९-२१॥
te codyamānā vidhinā bāhukeṇa hayottamāḥ। samutpetur ivākāśaṃ rathinaṃ mohayann iva॥03-69-21॥
[ते (te) - they; चोद्यमाना (codyamānāḥ) - urged; विधिना (vidhinā) - with skill; बाहुकेन (bāhukeṇa) - by Bāhuka; हयोत्तमाः (hayottamāḥ) - excellent steeds; समुत्पेतुः (samutpetuḥ) - sprang up; इव (iva) - as if; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - into the sky; रथिनम् (rathinam) - the charioteer; मोहयन् (mohayan) - bewildering; इव (iva) - as if;]
(They, being urged with skill by Bāhuka, the excellent steeds, sprang up as if into the sky, bewildering the charioteer as if.)
Urged skillfully by Bāhuka, the excellent steeds seemed to leap into the sky, as if bewildering the charioteer. (03-69-21)
तथा तु दृष्ट्वा तानश्वान्वहतो वातरंहसः। अयोध्याधिपतिर्धीमान्विस्मयं परमं ययौ ॥०३-६९-२२॥
tathā tu dṛṣṭvā tānaśvān vahato vātaraṃhasaḥ। ayodhyādhipatīr dhīmān vismayaṃ paramaṃ yayau ॥03-69-22॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तान् (tān) - those; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; वहतः (vahataḥ) - moving; वातरंहसः (vātaraṃhasaḥ) - as fast as the wind; अयोध्याधिपतिः (ayodhyādhipatiḥ) - lord of Ayodhyā; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; विस्मयं (vismayaṃ) - wonder; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; ययौ (yayau) - felt;]
(Thus but having seen those horses moving as fast as the wind, the wise lord of Ayodhyā felt supreme wonder.)
But when he saw those horses moving at wind-like speed, the wise lord of Ayodhyā was filled with utmost wonder. (03-69-22)
रथघोषं तु तं श्रुत्वा हयसङ्ग्रहणं च तत्। वार्ष्णेयश्चिन्तयामास बाहुकस्य हयज्ञताम् ॥०३-६९-२३॥
rathaghoṣaṃ tu taṃ śrutvā hayasangrahaṇaṃ ca tat। vārṣṇeyaścintayāmāsa bāhukhasya hayajñatām ॥03-69-23॥
[रथघोषं (rathaghoṣam) - chariot-sound; तु (tu) - but; तं (tam) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; हयसङ्ग्रहणं (hayasaṅgrahaṇam) - horse-mustering; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - pondered; बाहुकस्य (bāhukhasya) - of Bāhuka; हयज्ञताम् (hayajñatām) - horse-expertise;]
(But, having heard that chariot-sound and that horse-mustering, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi pondered the horse-expertise of Bāhuka.)
But when he heard the sound of the chariot and the horse-mustering, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi considered Bāhuka's skill with horses. (03-69-23)
किं नु स्यान्मातलिरयं देवराजस्य सारथिः। तथा हि लक्षणं वीरे बाहुके दृश्यते महत् ॥०३-६९-२४॥
kiṁ nu syān mātalir ayaṁ devarājasya sārathiḥ। tathā hi lakṣaṇaṁ vīre bāhuke dṛśyate mahat॥03-69-24॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; अयम् (ayam) - this; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of gods (Indra); सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; तथा (tathā) - so; हि (hi) - indeed; लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - characteristic; वीरे (vīre) - in the hero; बाहुके (bāhuke) - Bāhuka; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(What indeed may be—this Mātali, the charioteer of the king of gods? So indeed the characteristic is seen in the hero Bāhuka, great.)
Is this person perhaps Mātali, the charioteer of the king of gods? For such a great mark is seen in the hero Bāhuka. (03-69-24)
शालिहोत्रोऽथ किं नु स्याद्धयानां कुलतत्त्ववित्। मानुषं समनुप्राप्तो वपुः परमशोभनम् ॥०३-६९-२५॥
śālihotro-'tha kiṃ nu syād-dhayānāṃ kulatattvavit। mānuṣaṃ samanuprāpto vapuḥ paramaśobhanam ॥03-69-25॥
[शालिहोत्रः (śālihotraḥ) - Śalihotra; (proper noun); अथ (atha) - then; now; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; might be; धयानाम् (dhayānām) - of horses; (genitive plural of dhaya); कुलतत्त्ववित् (kulatattvavit) - knower of the essential nature of the lineage; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; समनुप्राप्तः (samanuprāptaḥ) - having attained; having assumed; वपुः (vapuḥ) - body; form; परमशोभनम् (paramaśobhanam) - supremely beautiful; very splendid;]
(Śalihotra then—what indeed may be the knower of the essential nature of the lineage of horses—having attained a supremely beautiful human form.)
Is it then that Śalihotra, the knower of the essence of the horse lineage, has assumed a most beautiful human form? (03-69-25)
उताहो स्विद्भवेद्राजा नलः परपुरञ्जयः। सोऽयं नृपतिरायात इत्येवं समचिन्तयत् ॥०३-६९-२६॥
utāho svidbhavedrājā nalaḥ parapurañjayaḥ। so'yaṃ nṛpatirāyāta ityevaṃ samacintayat॥03-69-26॥
[उताहो (utāho) - or else; स्वित् (svid) - perhaps; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; राजा (rājā) - king; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; आयात (āyāta) - has arrived; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; समचिन्तयत् (samacintayat) - he thought;]
(Or else, perhaps, may be the king Nala, conqueror of enemy cities, he this king has arrived—thus in this way he thought.)
Or perhaps it may be King Nala, the conqueror of enemy cities; thus he thought, 'This king has arrived.' (03-69-26)
अथ वा यां नलो वेद विद्यां तामेव बाहुकः। तुल्यं हि लक्षये ज्ञानं बाहुकस्य नलस्य च ॥०३-६९-२७॥
atha vā yāṃ nalo veda vidyāṃ tām eva bāhukaḥ। tulyaṃ hi lakṣaye jñānaṃ bāhukasya nalasya ca॥03-69-27॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; यां (yāṃ) - which; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala (proper noun); वेद (veda) - knows; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; ताम् (tām) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka (proper noun); तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; alike; हि (hi) - indeed; लक्षये (lakṣaye) - I perceive; I see; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; बाहुकस्य (bāhukasya) - of Bāhuka; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; च (ca) - and;]
(Now or which knowledge Nala knows, that indeed Bāhuka (knows). Equal indeed I perceive the knowledge of Bāhuka and of Nala.)
Now, the knowledge that Nala possesses, that same knowledge is possessed by Bāhuka. Indeed, I perceive the knowledge of Bāhuka and Nala as equal. (03-69-27)
अपि चेदं वयस्तुल्यमस्य मन्ये नलस्य च। नायं नलो महावीर्यस्तद्विद्यस्तु भविष्यति ॥०३-६९-२८॥
api cedam vayastulyam asya manye nalasya ca। nāyaṃ nalo mahāvīryaḥ tad-vidyaḥ tu bhaviṣyati॥03-69-28॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; च (ca) - and; इदं (idam) - this; वयस्तुल्यम् (vayastulyam) - equal in age; अस्य (asya) - of him; मन्ये (manye) - I think; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great strength; तद्विद्यः (tad-vidyaḥ) - possessing his knowledge; तु (tu) - but; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Indeed and this equal in age of him I think and of Nala; not this Nala of great strength, but possessing his knowledge will be.)
Indeed, I think this one is of equal age to Nala; but this is not the Nala of great strength—rather, he will be one possessing his knowledge. (03-69-28)
प्रच्छन्ना हि महात्मानश्चरन्ति पृथिवीमिमाम्। दैवेन विधिना युक्ताः शास्त्रोक्तैश्च विरूपणैः ॥०३-६९-२९॥
pracchannā hi mahātmānaś caranti pṛthivīm imām। daivena vidhinā yuktāḥ śāstroktaiś ca virūpaṇaiḥ ॥03-69-29॥
[प्रच्छन्नाः (pracchannāḥ) - hidden; हि (hi) - indeed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; चरन्ति (caranti) - move; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; दैवेन (daivena) - by divine; विधिना (vidhinā) - by ordinance; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - possessed; शास्त्रोक्तैः (śāstroktaiḥ) - prescribed in scripture; च (ca) - and; विरूपणैः (virūpaṇaiḥ) - by deformations;]
(Hidden indeed great souls move the earth this, by divine ordinance possessed, and by deformations prescribed in scripture.)
Truly, great souls wander this earth in disguise, endowed by divine ordinance and with marks of deformation as prescribed by the scriptures. (03-69-29)
भवेत्तु मतिभेदो मे गात्रवैरूप्यतां प्रति। प्रमाणात्परिहीनस्तु भवेदिति हि मे मतिः ॥०३-६९-३०॥
bhavettu matibhedo me gātravairūpyatāṃ prati। pramāṇātparihīnastu bhavediti hi me matiḥ॥03-69-30॥
[भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; shall be; तु (tu) - but; on the other hand; मतिभेदः (matibhedaḥ) - difference of opinion; division of mind; मे (me) - to me; my; गात्रवैरूप्यतां (gātravairūpyatām) - to the state of bodily deformity; प्रति (prati) - towards; respecting; प्रमाणात् (pramāṇāt) - from standard; from measure; परिहीनः (parihīnaḥ) - deprived; lacking; तुः (tu) - but; yet; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; shall be; इति (iti) - thus; so; हि (hi) - indeed; for; मे (me) - my; to me; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion; thought;]
(But may there be difference of opinion for me regarding the state of bodily deformity. But deprived from standard may be, thus indeed my opinion.)
But let there be for me a difference of opinion concerning bodily deformity; however, it is my opinion that to lack the proper standard is worse. (03-69-30)
वयःप्रमाणं तत्तुल्यं रूपेण तु विपर्ययः। नलं सर्वगुणैर्युक्तं मन्ये बाहुकमन्ततः ॥०३-६९-३१॥
vayaḥ-pramāṇaṃ tat-tulyaṃ rūpeṇa tu viparyayaḥ। nalaṃ sarva-guṇair-yuktaṃ manye bāhuka-m-antataḥ॥03-69-31॥
[वयःप्रमाणं (vayaḥ-pramāṇam) - measure of age; तत्तुल्यं (tat-tulyam) - equal to that; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in form; तु (tu) - but; विपर्ययः (viparyayaḥ) - difference; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; सर्वगुणैः (sarva-guṇaiḥ) - with all virtues; युक्तं (yuktam) - endowed; मन्ये (manye) - I think; बाहुकम् (bāhukam) - Bāhuka; अन्ततः (antataḥ) - inwardly;]
(Measure of age equal to that, in form but difference. Nala with all virtues endowed I think Bāhuka inwardly.)
The measure of age is the same, but there is a difference in form. I think Bāhuka is inwardly Nala, endowed with all virtues. (03-69-31)
एवं विचार्य बहुशो वार्ष्णेयः पर्यचिन्तयत्। हृदयेन महाराज पुण्यश्लोकस्य सारथिः ॥०३-६९-३२॥
evaṃ vicārya bahuśo vārṣṇeyaḥ paryacintayat। hṛdayena mahārāja puṇyaślokasya sārathiḥ ॥03-69-32॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विचार्य (vicārya) - after considering; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; repeatedly; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; पर्यचिन्तयत् (paryacintayat) - reflected; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - with the heart; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of the famous one; of one whose praise is auspicious; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer;]
(Thus, after considering many times, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi reflected. With the heart, O great king, the charioteer of the famous one.)
Thus, O great king, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, who was the charioteer of the illustrious one, repeatedly pondered in his heart. (03-69-32)
ऋतुपर्णस्तु राजेन्द्र बाहुकस्य हयज्ञताम्। चिन्तयन्मुमुदे राजा सहवार्ष्णेयसारथिः ॥०३-६९-३३॥
ṛtuparṇas tu rājeṃdra bāhukasya hayajñatām। cintayan mumude rājā sahavārṣṇeya-sārathiḥ ॥03-69-33॥
[ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Rituparna; (proper noun, king's name); तु (tu) - but; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; (vocative); बाहुकस्य (bāhukasya) - of Bāhuka; (proper noun, genitive); हय (haya) - horse; (noun); यज्ञताम् (yajñatām) - skill in sacrifice; (here: expertise); चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - contemplating; (participle, thinking of); मुमुदे (mumude) - rejoiced; was delighted; राजा (rājā) - the king; (subject); सह (saha) - together with; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - Vārṣṇeya; (proper noun); सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - the charioteer;]
(But Rituparna, O king, contemplating Bāhuka's skill in horses, rejoiced, the king together with Vārṣṇeya the charioteer.)
But King Rituparna, O king, contemplating Bāhuka's expertise with horses, felt delight, together with his charioteer Vārṣṇeya. (03-69-33)
बलं वीर्यं तथोत्साहं हयसङ्ग्रहणं च तत्। परं यत्नं च सम्प्रेक्ष्य परां मुदमवाप ह ॥०३-६९-३४॥
balaṃ vīryaṃ tathotsāhaṃ hayasaṅgrahaṇaṃ ca tat। paraṃ yatnaṃ ca samprekṣya parāṃ mudam avāpa ha॥03-69-34॥
[बलं (balaṃ) - strength; वीर्यं (vīryaṃ) - energy; तथोत्साहं (tathotsāhaṃ) - and also eagerness; हयसङ्ग्रहणं (hayasaṅgrahaṇaṃ) - controlling of horses; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; यत्नं (yatnaṃ) - effort; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; परां (parāṃ) - great; मुदम् (mudam) - joy; अवाप (avāpa) - obtained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Strength, energy, and also eagerness, the controlling of horses, and that supreme effort also, having seen, great joy indeed he obtained.)
Having seen that strength, energy, eagerness, skill in horse management, and supreme effort, he became filled with great joy. (03-69-34)
