स नदीः पर्वतांश्चैव वनानि च सरांसि च। अचिरेणातिचक्राम खेचरः खे चरन्निव ॥०३-७०-१॥
sa nadīḥ parvatāṁś caiva vanāni ca sarāṁsi ca। acireṇāticakrāma khecaraḥ khe carann iva ॥03-70-1॥
[स (sa) - he; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; पर्वतान् (parvatān) - mountains; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; च (ca) - and; सरांसि (sarāṁsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - quickly; अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - passed over; खेचरः (khecaraḥ) - sky-goer; खे (khe) - in the sky; चरन् (caran) - moving; इव (iva) - as if;]
(He rivers mountains and indeed forests and lakes and quickly passed over, sky-goer in the sky moving as if.)
He quickly passed over rivers, mountains, forests, and lakes, just like a sky-goer moving through the sky. (03-70-1)
तथा प्रयाते तु रथे तदा भाङ्गस्वरिर्नृपः। उत्तरीयमथापश्यद्भ्रष्टं परपुरञ्जयः ॥०३-७०-२॥
tathā prayāte tu rathe tadā bhāṅgasvarir nṛpaḥ। uttarīyam athāpaśyad bhraṣṭaṃ parapurañjayaḥ॥03-70-2॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रयाते (prayāte) - when had departed; तु (tu) - but; रथे (rathe) - in the chariot; तदा (tadā) - then; भाङ्गस्वरिः (bhāṅgasvariḥ) - Bhāṅgasvari (name); नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; उत्तरीयम् (uttarīyam) - upper garment; अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; भ्रष्टम् (bhraṣṭam) - fallen; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Thus, when (he) had departed in the chariot, then King Bhāṅgasvari saw the upper garment fallen, O conqueror of enemy cities.)
Thus, after the chariot had departed, King Bhāṅgasvari then saw the upper garment had fallen, O conqueror of cities. (03-70-2)
ततः स त्वरमाणस्तु पटे निपतिते तदा। ग्रहीष्यामीति तं राजा नलमाह महामनाः ॥०३-७०-३॥
tataḥ sa tvaramāṇas tu paṭe nipatite tadā। grahīṣyāmīti taṃ rājā nalam āha mahāmanāḥ॥03-70-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; तु (tu) - but; पटे (paṭe) - on the cloth; निपतिते (nipatite) - having fallen; तदा (tadā) - then; ग्रहीष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - I will seize; इति (iti) - thus; तं (taṃ) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; आह (āha) - said; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(Then he, hastening, but when the cloth had fallen, then "I will seize (him)," thus to him the king (to) Nala said, great-minded.)
Then, as the cloth had fallen, he who was hastening, the great-minded king said to Nala, "I will seize him." (03-70-3)
निगृह्णीष्व महाबुद्धे हयानेतान्महाजवान्। वार्ष्णेयो यावदेतं मे पटमानयतामिति ॥०३-७०-४॥
nigṛhṇīṣva mahābuddhe hayān etān mahājavān। vārṣṇeyo yāvad etaṃ me paṭam ānayatām iti ॥03-70-4॥
[निगृह्णीष्व (nigṛhṇīṣva) - restrain; महाबुद्धे (mahābuddhe) - O great-intelligent one; हयान् (hayān) - horses; एतान् (etān) - these; महाजवान् (mahājavān) - of great speed; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; until; एतं (etaṃ) - this; मे (me) - to me; for me; पटम् (paṭam) - cloth; (standard); आनयताम् (ānayatām) - let him bring; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Restrain, O great-intelligent one, these horses of great speed; the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, until this cloth (standard) for me let him bring, thus.)
O great-wise one, restrain these swift horses until the descendant of Vṛṣṇi brings me this standard (or cloth), thus. (03-70-4)
नलस्तं प्रत्युवाचाथ दूरे भ्रष्टः पटस्तव। योजनं समतिक्रान्तो न स शक्यस्त्वया पुनः ॥०३-७०-५॥
nalas taṁ pratyuvācātha dūre bhraṣṭaḥ paṭas tava। yojanaṁ samatikrānto na sa śakyas tvayā punaḥ॥03-70-5॥
[नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; (proper noun); तं (taṁ) - him; the (object) person; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; answered; अथ (atha) - then; दूरे (dūre) - far away; at a distance; भ्रष्टः (bhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; dropped; पटः (paṭaḥ) - cloth; garment; scarf; तव (tava) - your; योजनम् (yojanam) - a yojana (unit of distance, about 8-9 miles); distance; समतिक्रान्तः (samatikrāntaḥ) - crossed over; gone beyond; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - that; he; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; obtainable; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Nala replied to him then, "Far away fallen is your cloth; a yojana has been crossed over; not that is possible by you again.")
Then Nala replied to him, "Your cloth has fallen far away—having crossed a yojana in distance; it is no longer possible for you to recover it." (03-70-5)
एवमुक्ते नलेनाथ तदा भाङ्गस्वरिर्नृपः। आससाद वने राजन्फलवन्तं बिभीतकम् ॥०३-७०-६॥
evamukte nalenātha tadā bhāṅgasvarirnṛpaḥ। āsasāda vane rājanphalavantaṃ bibhītakam॥03-70-6॥
[एवमुक्ते (evamukte) - when thus spoken; नलेन (nalena) - by Nala; अथ (atha) - then; तदा (tadā) - at that time; भाङ्गस्वरिः (bhāṅgasvariḥ) - one with a broken voice; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; वने (vane) - in the forest; राजन् (rājan) - O king; फलवन्तं (phalavantaṃ) - fruit-bearing; बिभीतकम् (bibhītakam) - bibhītaka tree;]
(When thus spoken by Nala, then at that time, the king with a broken voice approached, in the forest, O king, the fruit-bearing bibhītaka tree.)
When Nala had thus spoken, then the king, his voice broken, approached, O king, a fruit-bearing bibhītaka tree in the forest. (03-70-6)
तं दृष्ट्वा बाहुकं राजा त्वरमाणोऽभ्यभाषत। ममापि सूत पश्य त्वं सङ्ख्याने परमं बलम् ॥०३-७०-७॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bāhukaṃ rājā tvaramāṇo'bhyabhāṣata। mamāpi sūta paśya tvaṃ saṃkhyāne paramaṃ balam ॥03-70-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बाहुकं (bāhukaṃ) - Bāhuka; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastening; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; सूत (sūta) - charioteer; पश्य (paśya) - see; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सङ्ख्याने (saṃkhyāne) - in the contest; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(Him having seen, Bāhuka, the king, hastening, addressed: "My also, charioteer, see you, in the contest, supreme strength.")
Seeing Bāhuka, the king hurriedly said: "O charioteer, you also behold my supreme strength in the contest." (03-70-7)
सर्वः सर्वं न जानाति सर्वज्ञो नास्ति कश्चन। नैकत्र परिनिष्ठास्ति ज्ञानस्य पुरुषे क्वचित् ॥०३-७०-८॥
sarvaḥ sarvaṁ na jānāti sarvajño nāsti kaścana। naikatrapariniṣṭhāsti jñānasya puruṣe kvacit ॥03-70-8॥
[सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all (persons); सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - everything; न (na) - not; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; सर्वज्ञः (sarvajñaḥ) - omniscient one; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; न (na) - not; एकत्र (ekatra) - in one (person/place); परिनिष्ठा (pariniṣṭhā) - full establishment; अस्ति (asti) - exists; ज्ञानस्य (jñānasya) - of knowledge; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in a man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(All (persons) everything not knows; omniscient one not exists anyone; not in one (person/place) full establishment exists of knowledge in a man anywhere.)
No one knows everything; there is no one who is omniscient. Nowhere is perfect knowledge established in any one man. (03-70-8)
वृक्षेऽस्मिन्यानि पर्णानि फलान्यपि च बाहुक। पतितानि च यान्यत्र तत्रैकमधिकं शतम् ॥ एकपत्राधिकं पत्रं फलमेकं च बाहुक ॥०३-७०-९॥
vṛkṣe'sminyāni parṇāni phalānyapi ca bāhuka। patitāni ca yānyatra tatraikamadhikaṃ śatam ॥ ekapatrādhikaṃ patraṃ phalamekaṃ ca bāhuka ॥03-70-9॥
[वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - in the tree; अस्मिन् (asmin) - this; यानि (yāni) - which (things); पर्णानि (parṇāni) - leaves; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka; पतितानि (patitāni) - fallen; च (ca) - and; यानि (yāni) - which (things); अत्र (atra) - here; तत्र (tatra) - there; एकम् (ekam) - one; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - more; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; एकपत्राधिकं (ekapatrādhikaṃ) - with one more leaf; पत्रं (patraṃ) - leaf; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; च (ca) - and; बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka;]
(In the tree, in this, which leaves, fruits, also and, O Bāhuka, fallen and which here, there, one more than a hundred. With one more leaf, leaf, fruit one and, O Bāhuka.)
O Bāhuka, on this tree, the number of leaves and fruits, whether fallen or present elsewhere, is one more than a hundred. O Bāhuka, (there is) one leaf in excess (and) one fruit.
पञ्च कोट्योऽथ पत्राणां द्वयोरपि च शाखयोः। प्रचिनुह्यस्य शाखे द्वे याश्चाप्यन्याः प्रशाखिकाः ॥ आभ्यां फलसहस्रे द्वे पञ्चोनं शतमेव च ॥०३-७०-१०॥
pañca koṭyo 'tha patrāṇāṃ dvayor api ca śākhayoḥ। pracinuhy asya śākhe dve yāś cāpy anyāḥ praśākhikāḥ॥ ābhyāṃ phalasahasre dve pañconaṃ śatam eva ca॥03-70-10॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; कोट्यः (koṭyaḥ) - crores; अथ (atha) - then; पत्राणां (patrāṇāṃ) - of leaves; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; शाखयोः (śākhayoḥ) - of branches; प्रचिनुहि (pracinuhि) - reckon; अस्य (asya) - of this; शाखे (śākhe) - branches; द्वे (dve) - two; याः (yāḥ) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; प्रशाखिकाः (praśākhikāḥ) - sub-branches; आभ्यां (ābhyāṃ) - from these two; फलसहस्रे (phalasahasre) - with a thousand fruits; द्वे (dve) - two; पञ्चोनं (pañcionaṃ) - less by five; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(five crores then of leaves, of the two also and of branches; reckon of this branches two which and also other sub-branches; from these two with a thousand fruits; two less by five, hundred only and;)
There are then five crores of leaves on both of its branches; count two branches here and also the other sub-branches. From these two, (each yields) two thousand fruits, but just five short of a hundred as well. (03-70-10)
ततो रथादवप्लुत्य राजानं बाहुकोऽब्रवीत्। परोक्षमिव मे राजन्कत्थसे शत्रुकर्शन ॥०३-७०-११॥
tato rathād avaplutya rājānaṃ bāhuko'bravīt। parokṣam iva me rājan katthase śatrukarśana ॥03-70-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; अवप्लुत्य (avaplutya) - having leaped down; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka (proper name); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; परोक्षमिव (parokṣam iva) - as if in secret; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कत्थसे (katthase) - do you boast; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Then, having leaped down from the chariot, Bāhuka spoke to the king: “As if in secret to me, O king, do you boast, destroyer of enemies?” (03-70-11))
Then, having leapt from the chariot, Bāhuka spoke to the king: “O king, destroyer of enemies, do you boast as if you were speaking in secret to me?” (03-70-11)
अथ ते गणिते राजन्विद्यते न परोक्षता। प्रत्यक्षं ते महाराज गणयिष्ये बिभीतकम् ॥०३-७०-१२॥
atha te gaṇite rājan vidyate na parokṣatā। pratyakṣaṃ te mahārāja gaṇayiṣye bibhītakam ॥03-70-12॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; ते (te) - for you; to you; गणिते (gaṇite) - when calculated; having been counted; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विध्यते (vidyate) - there is; exists; न (na) - not; परोक्षता (parokṣatā) - indirectness; remoteness; प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣam) - directly; in presence; ते (te) - for you; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; गणयिष्ये (gaṇayiṣye) - I shall count; I will enumerate; बिभीतकम् (bibhītakam) - the Bibhitaka fruit (Terminalia bellirica);]
(Now, for you, when calculated, O king, there is not indirectness. Directly, for you, O great king, I shall count the Bibhitaka fruit. (03-70-12))
Now, O king, in the calculation for you, there is no obscurity. Directly, O great king, I shall count the Bibhitaka fruits for you. (03-70-12)
अहं हि नाभिजानामि भवेदेवं न वेति च। सङ्ख्यास्यामि फलान्यस्य पश्यतस्ते जनाधिप ॥ मुहूर्तमिव वार्ष्णेयो रश्मीन्यच्छतु वाजिनाम् ॥०३-७०-१३॥
ahaṃ hi nābhijānāmi bhaved evaṃ na veti ca। saṅkhyāsyāmi phalāny asya paśyataḥ te janādhipa ॥ muhūrtam iva vārṣṇeyo raśmīn yacchatu vājinām ॥03-70-13॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; नाभिजानामि (nābhijānāmi) - do not know; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; न (na) - not; वेति (veti) - would be; च (ca) - and; सङ्ख्यास्यामि (saṅkhyāsyāmi) - I shall count; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; अस्य (asya) - of this; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - seeing; ते (te) - your; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of men; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - a moment; इव (iva) - like; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - son of Vṛṣṇi; रश्मीन् (raśmīn) - reins; यच्छतु (yacchatu) - should hold; वाजिनाम् (vājinām) - of horses;]
(I indeed do not know may be thus or not would be and. I shall count the fruits of this seeing your, O lord of men. A moment like the son of Vṛṣṇi should hold the reins of the horses.)
I truly do not know whether it may be thus or not. I will count the fruits of this as you watch, O lord of men. For a moment, let the son of Vṛṣṇi hold the reins of the horses. (3-70-13)
तमब्रवीन्नृपः सूतं नायं कालो विलम्बितुम्। बाहुकस्त्वब्रवीदेनं परं यत्नं समास्थितः ॥०३-७०-१४॥
tam abravīn nṛpaḥ sūtaṃ na ayaṃ kālaḥ vilambitum. bāhukas tv abravīd enaṃ paraṃ yatnaṃ samāsthitāḥ ॥03-70-14॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; सूतम् (sūtam) - to the charioteer; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; विलम्बितुम् (vilambitum) - to delay; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; तु (tu) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (enam) - to him; परम् (param) - supreme; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; समास्थितः (samāsthitaḥ) - undertaking;]
(Him the king spoke to the charioteer: "This is not time to delay." Bāhuka, but, said to him: "Supreme effort has been undertaken.")
The king spoke to the charioteer, "This is not the time to delay." But Bāhuka said to him, "The utmost effort has been undertaken." (03-70-14)
प्रतीक्षस्व मुहूर्तं त्वमथ वा त्वरते भवान्। एष याति शिवः पन्था याहि वार्ष्णेयसारथिः ॥०३-७०-१५॥
pratīkṣasva muhūrtaṃ tvam atha vā tvarate bhavān। eṣa yāti śivaḥ panthā yāhi vārṣṇeya-sārathiḥ॥03-70-15॥
[प्रतीक्षस्व (pratīkṣasva) - wait; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtaṃ) - a moment; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; त्वरते (tvarate) - hurries; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); एष (eṣa) - this; याति (yāti) - goes; शिवः (śivaḥ) - auspicious; पन्था (panthā) - path; याहि (yāhi) - go; वार्ष्णेयसारथिः (vārṣṇeya-sārathiḥ) - O charioteer of Vārṣṇeya (Krishna);]
(Wait a moment, you, or if you are in haste. This goes, the auspicious path, go, O charioteer of Vārṣṇeya.)
Wait for a moment, or if you are in a hurry, go ahead. This is the auspicious path—go, O charioteer of the descendant of Vṛṣṇi (Krishna). (03-70-15)
अब्रवीदृतुपर्णस्तं सान्त्वयन्कुरुनन्दन। त्वमेव यन्ता नान्योऽस्ति पृथिव्यामपि बाहुक ॥०३-७०-१६॥
abravīd ṛtuparṇas taṃ sāntvayan kurunandana। tvam eva yantā nānyo 'sti pṛthivyām api bāhuka ॥03-70-16॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; तं (taṃ) - to him; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; त्वम् एव (tvam eva) - you indeed; यन्ता (yantā) - charioteer; न अन्यः (na anyaḥ) - not another; अस्ति (asti) - exists; पृथिव्याम् अपि (pṛthivyām api) - even on earth; बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka;]
(Ṛtuparṇa said to him, consoling, O joy of the Kurus, you indeed are the charioteer; not another exists even on earth, O Bāhuka.)
Ṛtuparṇa, consoling him, said, "O joy of the Kurus, O Bāhuka, you alone are the charioteer; there is no one else like you on earth." (03-70-16)
त्वत्कृते यातुमिच्छामि विदर्भान्हयकोविद। शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि न विघ्नं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-७०-१७॥
tvat-kṛte yātum icchāmi vidarbhān hayakovida। śaraṇaṃ tvāṃ prapanno'smi na vighnaṃ kartum arhasi ॥03-70-17॥
[त्वत्कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; यातुम् (yātum) - to go; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to the Vidarbhas; हयकोविद (hayakovida) - O horse-expert; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रपन्नः (prapannaḥ) - I have taken shelter; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; न (na) - not; विघ्नं (vighnam) - obstacle; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(For your sake to go I wish to Vidarbhas, O horse-expert. Refuge in you I have taken, I am. Not obstacle to make you ought.)
O horse-expert, I wish to go to the Vidarbhas for your sake. I have taken refuge in you; you should not cause any obstacle. (03-70-17)
कामं च ते करिष्यामि यन्मां वक्ष्यसि बाहुक। विदर्भान्यदि यात्वाद्य सूर्यं दर्शयितासि मे ॥०३-७०-१८॥
kāmaṁ ca te kariṣyāmi yan māṁ vakṣyasi bāhuka। vidarbhān yadi yātvā adya sūryaṁ darśayitāsi me ॥03-70-18॥
[कामं (kāmaṁ) - willingly; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - to me; वक्ष्यसि (vakṣyasi) - you will say; बाहुक (bāhuka) - O Bāhuka; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to Vidarbha; यदि (yadi) - if; यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; अद्य (adya) - today; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the sun; दर्शयितासि (darśayitāsi) - you will show; मे (me) - to me;]
(Willingly and to you I will do that which to me you will say, O Bāhuka; to Vidarbha if having gone today the sun you will show to me.)
I will happily do whatever you ask of me, O Bāhuka, if today, after reaching Vidarbha, you show me the sun. (03-70-18)
अथाब्रवीद्बाहुकस्तं सङ्ख्यायेमं बिभीतकम्। ततो विदर्भान्यास्यामि कुरुष्वेदं वचो मम ॥०३-७०-१९॥
athābravīdbāhukastaṃ saṅkhyāyemaṃ bibhītakam। tato vidarbhānyāsyāmi kuruṣvedaṃ vaco mama ॥03-70-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; बाहुकः (bāhukah) - Bāhuka; तं (taṃ) - to him; सङ्ख्याय (saṅkhyāya) - having counted; इमं (imaṃ) - this; बिभीतकम् (bibhītakam) - Bibhītaka fruit; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - the Vidarbhas (people/land); आस्यामि (āsyāmi) - I will go; कुरु (kuru) - do; एदं (edaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; मम (mama) - of me;]
(Then Bāhuka said to him, having counted this Bibhītaka fruit, then I will go to the Vidarbhas, do this speech of mine.)
Then Bāhuka said to him, "After counting this Bibhītaka fruit, I will go to the Vidarbha country; therefore, follow my words." (03-70-19)
अकाम इव तं राजा गणयस्वेत्युवाच ह। सोऽवतीर्य रथात्तूर्णं शातयामास तं द्रुमम् ॥०३-७०-२०॥
akāma iva taṁ rājā gaṇayasveti uvāca ha। so'vatīrya rathāt tūrṇaṁ śātayāmāsa taṁ drumam ॥03-70-20॥
[अकाम (akāma) - without desire; इव (iva) - as if; तं (taṁ) - him; राजा (rājā) - the king; गणयस्व (gaṇayasva) - consider; इति (iti) - "thus"; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; शातयामास (śātayāmāsa) - he broke; तं (taṁ) - that; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree;]
(Without desire as if him the king "consider thus" said indeed. He having descended from the chariot quickly broke that tree.)
The king said to him, "Consider him as if without desire." Then he, having quickly descended from the chariot, broke that tree. (03-70-20)
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो राजानमिदमब्रवीत्। गणयित्वा यथोक्तानि तावन्त्येव फलानि च ॥०३-७०-२१॥
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo rājānam idam abravīt। gaṇayitvā yathoktāni tāvanty eva phalāni ca ॥03-70-21॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; विस्मयाविष्टः (vismayāviṣṭaḥ) - filled with wonder; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गणयित्वा (gaṇayitvā) - having counted; यथोक्तानि (yathoktāni) - as mentioned; तावन्त्येव (tāvanty eva) - just that many; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and;]
(Then he, filled with wonder, said this to the king: "Having counted, just that many fruits as mentioned.")
Then, filled with wonder, he said to the king: "Having counted, there are just as many fruits as were mentioned." (03-70-21)
अत्यद्भुतमिदं राजन्दृष्टवानस्मि ते बलम्। श्रोतुमिच्छामि तां विद्यां यथैतज्ज्ञायते नृप ॥०३-७०-२२॥
atyadbhutam idaṃ rājan dṛṣṭavān asmi te balam। śrotum icchāmi tāṃ vidyāṃ yathaitat jñāyate nṛpa ॥03-70-22॥
[अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; इदं (idaṃ) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - have seen; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ते (te) - your; बलम् (balam) - strength; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; ताम् (tāṃ) - that; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; यथा (yathā) - by which; एतत् (etat) - this; ज्ञायते (jñāyate) - is known; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Very wonderful this, O king, have seen I your strength. To hear I wish that knowledge by which this is known, O king.)
O king, I have witnessed this very wonderful strength of yours. I wish to hear about that knowledge by which this is understood, O king. (03-70-22)
तमुवाच ततो राजा त्वरितो गमने तदा। विद्ध्यक्षहृदयज्ञं मां सङ्ख्याने च विशारदम् ॥०३-७०-२३॥
tam uvāca tato rājā tvarito gamane tadā। viddhy akṣa-hṛdaya-jñaṃ māṃ saṅkhyāne ca viśāradam॥03-70-23॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurried; गमने (gamane) - in going; तदा (tadā) - then; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; अक्षहृदयज्ञम् (akṣa-hṛdaya-jñam) - knower of the essence of dice; माम् (mām) - me; सङ्ख्याने (saṅkhyāne) - in calculation; च (ca) - and; विशारदम् (viśāradam) - skilled;]
(The king then spoke to him, hurried in going then: "Know me as one who knows the essence of dice and who is skilled in calculation." (03-70-23))
Then the king, being quick to go, spoke to him: "Know me to be one acquainted with the secrets of dice and skilled in calculation." (03-70-23)
बाहुकस्तमुवाचाथ देहि विद्यामिमां मम। मत्तोऽपि चाश्वहृदयं गृहाण पुरुषर्षभ ॥०३-७०-२४॥
bāhukastamuvācātha dehi vidyāmimāṃ mama। matto'pi cāśvahṛdayaṃ gṛhāṇa puruṣarṣabha ॥03-70-24॥
[बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; (proper noun); तम् (tam) - to him; (pronoun); उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; देहि (dehi) - give; विद्यां (vidyām) - knowledge; (accusative singular); इमाम् (imām) - this; मम (mama) - my; (genitive singular); मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; (ablative singular); अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; (conjunctive particle); अश्वहृदयं (aśvahṛdayam) - Aśvahṛdaya (name of a secret relating to horses); गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; (vocative singular);]
(Bāhuka to him said then, give knowledge this my. From me also, and Aśvahṛdaya accept, O best of men.)
Bāhuka then said to him, "Grant me this knowledge of mine. Also, from me accept the Aśvahṛdaya, O best of men." (03-70-24)
ऋतुपर्णस्ततो राजा बाहुकं कार्यगौरवात्। हयज्ञानस्य लोभाच्च तथेत्येवाब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-७०-२५॥
ṛtuparṇas tato rājā bāhukaṃ kāryagauravāt | hayajñānasya lobhāc ca tathety evābravīd vacaḥ ॥03-70-25॥
[ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Rtuparna; (proper noun); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; राजा (rājā) - king; बाहुकं (bāhukaṃ) - Bahuka; (proper noun in accusative); कार्यगौरवात् (kāryagauravāt) - because of the importance of the task; हयज्ञानस्य (hayajñānasya) - of horse knowledge; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from desire; from greed; च (ca) - and; तथेति (tatheti) - so be it; thus; एव (eva) - indeed; just; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; statement;]
(Rtuparna then king Bahuka because of the importance of the task, and from desire for knowledge of horses, 'so be it' indeed said the word.)
Then King Rtuparna, compelled by the importance of the task and also out of desire for knowledge of horses, said only the words 'So be it.' (03-70-25)
यथेष्टं त्वं गृहाणेदमक्षाणां हृदयं परम्। निक्षेपो मेऽश्वहृदयं त्वयि तिष्ठतु बाहुक ॥ एवमुक्त्वा ददौ विद्यामृतुपर्णो नलाय वै ॥०३-७०-२६॥
yatheṣṭaṁ tvaṁ gṛhāṇedam akṣāṇāṁ hṛdayaṁ param। nikṣepo me'śvahṛdayaṁ tvayi tiṣṭhatu bāhuka ॥ evam uktvā dadau vidyām ṛtuparṇo nalāya vai ॥03-70-26॥
[यथेष्टं (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - take; इदम् (idam) - this; अक्षाणां (akṣāṇām) - of dice; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; परम् (param) - supreme; निक्षेपः (nikṣepaḥ) - deposit; मे (me) - my; अश्वहृदयं (aśvahṛdayam) - horse's heart; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तिष्ठतु (tiṣṭhatu) - let remain; बाहुक (bāhuka) - Bāhuka; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ददौ (dadau) - gave; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; नलाय (nalāya) - to Nala; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(As desired, you take this supreme heart of dice. My deposit, the horse's heart, let remain in you, O Bāhuka. Thus having spoken, Ṛtuparṇa indeed gave the knowledge to Nala.)
Take, as you wish, this supreme heart of dice. Let my deposit, the horse's heart, remain within you, O Bāhuka. Having said this, Ṛtuparṇa gave the knowledge to Nala. (03-70-26)
तस्याक्षहृदयज्ञस्य शरीरान्निःसृतः कलिः। कर्कोटकविषं तीक्ष्णं मुखात्सततमुद्वमन् ॥०३-७०-२७॥
tasyākṣa-hṛdaya-jñasya śarīrān niḥsṛtaḥ kaliḥ। karkoṭaka-viṣaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ mukhāt satatam udvamān ॥03-70-27॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अक्षहृदयज्ञस्य (akṣa-hṛdaya-jñasya) - of one who knows the heart of dice; शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from (his) body; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (embodiment of vice); कर्कोटकविषं (karkoṭaka-viṣam) - Karkotaka's poison; तीक्ष्णं (tīkṣṇam) - sharp; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from (his) mouth; सततम् (satatam) - continuously; उद्वमन् (udvamān) - vomiting;]
(Of his, of the one who knows the heart of dice, from the body, emerged Kali; Karkotaka's poison, sharp, from (his) mouth, continuously vomiting.)
From the body of the one who understands the heart of dice, Kali emerged; and he continuously spewed sharp poison of Karkotaka from his mouth. (03-70-27)
कलेस्तस्य तदार्तस्य शापाग्निः स विनिःसृतः। स तेन कर्शितो राजा दीर्घकालमनात्मवान् ॥०३-७०-२८॥
kalestasya tadārtasya śāpāgniḥ sa viniḥsṛtaḥ। sa tena karṣito rājā dīrghakālam anātmavān ॥03-70-28॥
[कलेः (kaleḥ) - of Kali; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तदा (tadā) - then; आर्तस्य (ārtasya) - of the afflicted; शाप-अग्निः (śāpa-agniḥ) - curse-fire; सः (saḥ) - he; विनिःसृतः (viniḥsṛtaḥ) - went forth; सः (saḥ) - he; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्शितः (karṣitaḥ) - emaciated; राजा (rājā) - the king; दीर्घ-कालम् (dīrgha-kālam) - for a long time; अनात्मवान् (anātmavān) - dispirited;]
(Of Kali, of him then of the afflicted, curse-fire he went forth. He by that emaciated the king, for a long time dispirited.)
Then, from that afflicted one, the curse-fire of Kali went forth. By that, the king became emaciated and dispirited for a long time. (03-70-28)
ततो विषविमुक्तात्मा स्वरूपमकरोत्कलिः। तं शप्तुमैच्छत्कुपितो निषधाधिपतिर्नलः ॥०३-७०-२९॥
tato viṣa-vimukta-ātmā svarūpam akarot kaliḥ। taṃ śaptum aicchat kupito niṣadhādhipatir nalaḥ॥03-70-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विष-विमुक्त-आत्मा (viṣa-vimukta-ātmā) - having the self freed from poison; स्वरूपम् (svarūpam) - own form; अकरोत् (akarot) - he made; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; तं (taṃ) - him; शप्तुम् (śaptum) - to curse; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angered; निषध-अधिपतिः (niṣadha-adhipatiḥ) - the lord of Niṣadha; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala;]
(Then, having the self freed from poison, Kali assumed his own form. Desiring to curse him, the angered Nala, lord of Niṣadha, (acted).)
Then, after being freed from the poison, Kali took on his own form. Nala, the enraged lord of Niṣadha, desired to curse him. (03-70-29)
तमुवाच कलिर्भीतो वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः। कोपं संयच्छ नृपते कीर्तिं दास्यामि ते पराम् ॥०३-७०-३०॥
tam uvāca kalir bhīto vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ। kopaṃ saṃyaccha nṛpate kīrtiṃ dāsyāmi te parām॥03-70-30॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (the personification of Kali era); भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; कोपम् (kopaṃ) - anger; संयच्छ (saṃyaccha) - restrain; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; कीर्तिम् (kīrtiṃ) - glory; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; ते (te) - to you; पराम् (parām) - supreme;]
(To him Kali, afraid, trembling, with folded hands, said: "O king, restrain anger, I will give you supreme glory." (03-70-30))
Kali, trembling with fear and with folded hands, said to him: "O king, restrain your anger, I will grant you supreme glory." (03-70-30)
इन्द्रसेनस्य जननी कुपिता माशपत्पुरा। यदा त्वया परित्यक्ता ततोऽहं भृशपीडितः ॥०३-७०-३१॥
indrasenasya jananī kupitā māśapatpurā। yadā tvayā parityaktā tato'haṃ bhṛśapīḍitaḥ ॥03-70-31॥
[इन्द्रसेनस्य (indrasenasya) - of Indrasena; (possessive); जननी (jananī) - mother; कुपिता (kupitā) - angry; माशपत्पुरा (māśapatpurā) - O ruler of Māśapattapura; यदा (yadā) - when; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; परित्यक्ता (parityaktā) - abandoned; (feminine); ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; भृशपीडितः (bhṛśapīḍitaḥ) - greatly afflicted;]
(Indrasena's mother, angry, O ruler of Māśapatpura, when by you abandoned, then I greatly afflicted.)
Indrasena's mother became angry, O ruler of Māśapatpura; when she was abandoned by you, I was greatly afflicted. (03-70-31)
अवसं त्वयि राजेन्द्र सुदुःखमपराजित। विषेण नागराजस्य दह्यमानो दिवानिशम् ॥०३-७०-३२॥
avasaṃ tvayi rājeṃdra suduḥkhamaparājita। viṣeṇa nāgarājasya dahyamāno divāniśam ॥03-70-32॥
[अवसं (avasaṃ) - helpless; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; राजेन्द्र (rājeṃdra) - O king; सुदुःखम् (suduḥkham) - very miserable; अपराजित (aparājita) - O unconquered one; विषेण (viṣeṇa) - by poison; नागराजस्य (nāgarājasya) - of the king of serpents; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - being burned; दिवानिशम् (divāniśam) - day and night;]
(Helpless in you, O king, very miserable, O unconquered one, by the poison of the king of serpents being burned day and night.)
O unconquered one, O king, being helpless in you and greatly distressed, I am being burned by the poison of the king of serpents day and night. (03-70-32)
ये च त्वां मनुजा लोके कीर्तयिष्यन्त्यतन्द्रिताः। मत्प्रसूतं भयं तेषां न कदाचिद्भविष्यति ॥०३-७०-३३॥
ye ca tvāṃ manujā loke kīrtayiṣyantyatandritāḥ। matprasūtaṃ bhayaṃ teṣāṃ na kadācidbhaviṣyati॥03-70-33॥
[ये च (ye ca) - who and; (also: whoever and;) त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; (thee;) मनुजाः (manujāḥ) - humans; (people;) लोके (loke) - in the world; (in the realm;) कीर्तयिष्यन्ति (kīrtayiṣyanti) - will praise; (will recount;) अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - unceasing; (not lazy;) मत्प्रसूतं (matprasūtaṃ) - produced by me; (originated from me;) भयम् (bhayam) - fear; (danger;) तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; (their;) न (na) - not; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; (at any time;) भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; (will occur;]
(Whoever and you, humans in the world, will praise (you) unceasing, fear produced by me of them not ever will be.)
Whoever, among humans in the world, will praise you unceasingly, for them there will never be any fear produced by me. (03-70-33)
एवमुक्तो नलो राजा न्ययच्छत्कोपमात्मनः। ततो भीतः कलिः क्षिप्रं प्रविवेश बिभीतकम् ॥ कलिस्त्वन्येन नादृश्यत्कथयन्नैषधेन वै ॥०३-७०-३४॥
evam-ukto nalo rājā nyayacchat kopam-ātmanaḥ। tato bhītaḥ kaliḥ kṣipraṃ praviveśa bibhītakam॥ kalis-tvan-yena nādṛśyat kathayan naiṣadhena vai॥03-70-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken (to); नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; न्ययच्छत् (nyayacchat) - restrained; कोपम् (kopam) - anger; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - frightened; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; बिभीतकम् (bibhītakam) - Bibhītaka tree (Emblic myrobalan); कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; त्व् (tv) - but; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; न (na) - not; अदृश्यत् (adṛśyat) - was seen; कथयन् (kathayan) - telling; नैषधेन (naiṣadhena) - by Nala; वै (vai) - truly;]
(Thus having been addressed, king Nala restrained the anger of himself. Then, frightened, Kali quickly entered the Bibhītaka tree. But Kali was not seen by another, while telling (this) to Naisadha, truly.)
Thus addressed, King Nala restrained his own anger. Then, terrified, Kali quickly entered the Bibhītaka tree. But Kali was not seen by anyone else as he was speaking with Nala. (03-70-34)
ततो गतज्वरो राजा नैषधः परवीरहा। सम्प्रनष्टे कलौ राजन्सङ्ख्यायाथ फलान्युत ॥०३-७०-३५॥
tato gatajvaro rājā naiṣadhaḥ paravīrahā। sampranaṣṭe kalau rājansaṅkhyāyātha phalānyuta॥03-70-35॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; गतज्वरः (gatajvaraḥ) - having lost fever; राजा (rājā) - king; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the Naishadha (King Nala); परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; सम्प्रनष्टे (sampranaṣṭe) - when entirely lost (perished); कलौ (kalau) - in the dice-game; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सङ्ख्याय (saṅkhyāya) - having reckoned (counted); अथ (atha) - then; फलानि (phalāni) - the results (fruits); उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Thereafter, having lost fever, the king, Naishadha, destroyer of enemy heroes, when entirely perished in the dice-game, O king, having reckoned then indeed the results.)
Then, King Nala, the Naishadha, destroyer of enemy heroes, after recovering from his fever, when everything was lost in the dice-game, O king, then counted the results. (03-70-35)
मुदा परमया युक्तस्तेजसा च परेण ह। रथमारुह्य तेजस्वी प्रययौ जवनैर्हयैः ॥ बिभीतकश्चाप्रशस्तः संवृत्तः कलिसंश्रयात् ॥०३-७०-३६॥
mudā paramayā yuktas tejasā ca pareṇa ha। ratham āruhya tejasvī prayayau javanair hayaiḥ ॥ bibhītakaś cāpraśastaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ kali-saṃśrayāt ॥03-70-36॥
[मुदा (mudā) - with joy; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - joined; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; च (ca) - and; परेण (pareṇa) - exceeding; ह (ha) - indeed; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - radiant one; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; जवनैः (javaṇaiḥ) - by swift; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - horses; बिभीतकः (bibhītakaḥ) - the bibhītaka tree; च (ca) - and; अप्रशस्तः (apraśastaḥ) - unapproved; संवृत्तः (saṃvṛttaḥ) - has become; कलि (kali) - of Kali age; संश्रयात् (saṃśrayāt) - from contact with; ॥०३-७०-३६॥ (॥03-70-36॥) - ;]
(With joy, joined with supreme brilliance and exceeding, indeed, having mounted the chariot, the radiant one departed by swift horses. The bibhītaka tree also has become unapproved from contact with the Kali age.)
Filled with great joy and exceeding brilliance, he mounted his chariot and departed swiftly with his vigorous horses. The bibhītaka tree, too, has become disreputable due to the influence of the Kali age. (03-70-36)
हयोत्तमानुत्पततो द्विजानिव पुनः पुनः। नलः सञ्चोदयामास प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥०३-७०-३७॥
hayottamānutpatato dvijāniva punaḥ punaḥ। nalaḥ sañcodayāmāsa prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ॥03-70-37॥
[हय-उत्तमान्-उत्पततः (haya-uttamān-utpatataḥ) - excellent horses leaping;​ द्विजान्-इव (dvijān-iva) - like birds;​ पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;​ नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala;​ सञ्चोदयामास (sañcodayāmāsa) - urged on;​ प्रहृष्टेन-अन्तरात्मना (prahṛṣṭena-antarātmanā) - with delighted inner self;​;]
(Excellent horses leaping, like birds, again and again, Nala urged on with delighted inner self.)
Nala, with a delighted heart, urged the excellent horses forward again and again, as they leapt like birds. (3-70-37)
विदर्भाभिमुखो राजा प्रययौ स महामनाः। नले तु समतिक्रान्ते कलिरप्यगमद्गृहान्॥०३-७०-३८॥
vidarbhābhimukho rājā prayayau sa mahāmanāḥ। nale tu samatikrānte kalirapyagamadgṛhān॥03-70-38॥
[विदर्भाभिमुखः (vidarbhābhimukhaḥ) - towards Vidarbha; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; स (sa) - he; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; नले (nale) - when Nala; तु (tu) - but; समतिक्रान्ते (samatikrānte) - having gone away; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; अपि (api) - also; अगमत् (agamat) - went; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to the house;]
(The king, facing Vidarbha, he, the great-minded, departed. But when Nala had left, Kali also went to the house.)
The king, directing himself toward Vidarbha, that great-minded one departed. But when Nala had departed, Kali also went to the house. (03-70-38)
ततो गतज्वरो राजा नलोऽभूत्पृथिवीपते। विमुक्तः कलिना राजन्रूपमात्रवियोजितः ॥०३-७०-३९॥
tato gatajvaro rā́jā nalo'bhūt pṛthivīpate. vimuktaḥ kalinā rājan rūpamātra-viyojitaḥ ॥03-70-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; गतज्वरः (gata-jvaraḥ) - with his fever gone; having lost fever; राजा (rājā) - king; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivī-pate) - O lord of the earth; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - liberated; freed; कलिना (kalinā) - from Kali; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रूपमात्रवियोजितः (rūpamātra-viyojitaḥ) - deprived only of (his own) form;]
