ततो विदर्भान्सम्प्राप्तं सायाह्ने सत्यविक्रमम्। ऋतुपर्णं जना राज्ञे भीमाय प्रत्यवेदयन् ॥०३-७१-१॥
tato vidarbhān samprāptaṃ sāyāhne satyavikramam। ṛtuparṇaṃ janā rājñe bhīmāya pratyavedayan ॥03-71-1॥
[ततो (tato) - then; विदर्भान् (vidarbhān) - to Vidarbha; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptam) - having arrived; सायाह्ने (sāyāhne) - in the evening; सत्यविक्रमम् (satyavikramam) - Satyavikrama (true valor, epithet for Rtuparna); ऋतुपर्णं (ṛtuparṇam) - Rtuparna; जना (janā) - people; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; भीमाय (bhīmāya) - to Bhima; प्रत्यवेदयन् (pratyavedayan) - informed;]
(Then to Vidarbha, having arrived in the evening, Satyavikrama Rtuparna, the people informed to the king Bhima.)
Then, when Satyavikrama Rtuparna arrived at Vidarbha in the evening, the people informed King Bhima. (03-71-1)
स भीमवचनाद्राजा कुण्डिनं प्राविशत्पुरम्। नादयन्रथघोषेण सर्वाः सोपदिशो दश ॥०३-७१-२॥
sa bhīmavacanādrājā kuṇḍinaṃ prāviśatpuram। nādayanrathaghoṣeṇa sarvāḥ sopadiśo daśa ॥03-71-2॥
[स (sa) - he; भीमवचनात् (bhīmavacanāt) - from Bhīma's words; राजा (rājā) - the king; कुण्डिनं (kuṇḍinam) - Kuṇḍina (city); प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; पुरम् (puram) - city; नादयन् (nādayan) - resounding; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) - with the chariot's sound; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सोपदिशः (sopadiśaḥ) - with the regions; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(He, from Bhīma's words, the king entered Kuṇḍina city, resounding with the chariot's sound all ten regions.)
He, following Bhīma's words, the king entered the city of Kuṇḍina, making the sound of his chariot echo in all ten directions. (03-71-2)
ततस्तं रथनिर्घोषं नलाश्वास्तत्र शुश्रुवुः। श्रुत्वा च समहृष्यन्त पुरेव नलसंनिधौ ॥०३-७१-३॥
tatas taṃ rathanirghoṣaṃ nalāśvās tatra śuśruvuḥ। śrutvā ca samahṛṣyanta pureva nalasaṃnidhau॥03-71-3॥

(Then that chariot-sound Nala's horses there heard; having heard and were thrilled formerly as if in Nala's presence.)
Then Nala's horses there heard that chariot-sound, and, having heard it, they were thrilled, just as formerly in Nala's presence. (03-71-3)
दमयन्ती च शुश्राव रथघोषं नलस्य तम्। यथा मेघस्य नदतो गम्भीरं जलदागमे ॥०३-७१-४॥
damayantī ca śuśrāva rathaghoṣaṃ nalasya tam। yathā meghasya nadato gambhīraṃ jaladāgame ॥03-71-4॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; (proper noun; name of a woman); च (ca) - and; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; रथघोषं (rathaghoṣam) - chariot-sound; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; तम् (tam) - that; यथा (yathā) - as; like; मेघस्य (meghasya) - of the cloud; नदतो (nadataḥ) - roaring; गम्भीरं (gambhīram) - deep; profound; जलदागमे (jaladāgame) - at the coming of the rainy season;]
(Damayantī and heard the chariot-sound of Nala, that, as of the cloud roaring deep at the coming of the rainy season.)
Damayantī heard the sound of Nala's chariot, which was deep like the roaring of a cloud at the onset of the rainy season. (03-71-4)
नलेन सङ्गृहीतेषु पुरेव नलवाजिषु। सदृशं रथनिर्घोषं मेने भैमी तथा हयाः ॥०३-७१-५॥
nalena saṅgṛhīteṣu pureva nalavājiṣu । sadṛśaṃ rathanirghoṣaṃ mene bhaimī tathā hayāḥ ॥03-71-5॥
[नलेन (nalena) - by Nala; सङ्गृहीतेषु (saṅgṛhīteṣu) - when gathered; पुरा (purā) - formerly; इव (iva) - like; नलवाजिषु (nalavājiṣu) - among Nala's horses; सदृशं (sadṛśaṃ) - similar; रथनिर्घोषं (rathanirghoṣaṃ) - chariot-sound; मेने (mene) - thought; भैमी (bhaimī) - Damayanti (daughter of Bhīma); तथा (tathā) - thus; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; ॥०३-७१-५॥ (॥03-71-5॥) -;]
(Bhaimī (Damayanti) thus thought the sound of the chariot among Nala's horses, when gathered by Nala, to be like (that) formerly (she heard).)
Damayanti, the daughter of Bhīma, thought that the sound of the chariot produced by Nala's horses, when reined in by Nala, was just like what she had heard before. (03-71-5)
प्रासादस्थाश्च शिखिनः शालास्थाश्चैव वारणाः। हयाश्च शुश्रुवुस्तत्र रथघोषं महीपतेः ॥०३-७१-६॥
prāsādasthāś ca śikhinaḥ śālāsthāś caiva vāraṇāḥ। hayāś ca śuśruvus tatra rathaghoṣaṃ mahīpateḥ॥03-71-6॥
[प्रासादस्थाः (prāsādasthāḥ) - those dwelling in the palace; च (ca) - and; शिखिनः (śikhinaḥ) - peacocks; शालास्थाः (śālāsthāḥ) - those abiding in the stables; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वारणाः (vāraṇāḥ) - elephants; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; च (ca) - and; शुश्रुवुः (śuśruvuḥ) - heard; तत्र (tatra) - there; रथघोषम् (rathaghoṣam) - the din of chariots; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the king;]
(Those dwelling in the palace and peacocks, and those abiding in the stables indeed elephants, horses and heard there the din of chariots of the king.)
Those who were in the palace, the peacocks, the elephants in the stables, and the horses there heard the sound of the king’s chariots. (03-71-6)
ते श्रुत्वा रथनिर्घोषं वारणाः शिखिनस्तथा। प्रणेदुरुन्मुखा राजन्मेघोदयमिवेक्ष्य ह ॥०३-७१-७॥
te śrutvā ratha-nirghoṣaṁ vāraṇāḥ śikhinastathā। praṇedurunmukhā rājan meghodayamivekṣya ha ॥03-71-7॥
[ते (te) - they; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; रथनिर्घोषं (ratha-nirghoṣam) - the chariot's roar; वारणाः (vāraṇāḥ) - the elephants; शिखिनस्तथा (śikhinaḥ tathā) - the peacocks likewise; प्रणेदुः (praṇeduḥ) - cried out; उन्मुखाः (unmukhāḥ) - looking upward; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मेघोदयम् (meghodayam) - the arising of clouds; इव (iva) - like; ईक्ष्य (īkṣya) - having seen; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(They, having heard the chariot's roar, the elephants and the peacocks likewise, cried out looking upward, O king, having seen the arising of clouds, like indeed.)
O king, having heard the roar of the chariot, the elephants and also the peacocks, looking up, cried out as if they had seen the advent of rain clouds. (03-71-7)
दमयन्त्युवाच॥

Damayanti said.
यथासौ रथनिर्घोषः पूरयन्निव मेदिनीम्। मम ह्लादयते चेतो नल एष महीपतिः ॥०३-७१-८॥
yathāsau rathanirghoṣaḥ pūrayanniva medinīm। mama hlādayate ceto nala eṣa mahīpatiḥ ॥03-71-8॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; असौ (asau) - this (here); रथनिर्घोषः (rathanirghoṣaḥ) - the chariot's thunderous sound; पूरयन् (pūrayan) - filling; इव (iva) - as if; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth; मम (mama) - my; ह्लादयते (hlādayate) - delights; चेतः (cetaḥ) - mind; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; एष (eṣa) - this; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king;]
(Just as this chariot's thunderous sound, as if filling the earth, delights my mind, Nala, this king.)
Just as the thunderous sound of this chariot, as if filling the earth, delights my mind, so does this king Nala. (03-71-8)
अद्य चन्द्राभवक्त्रं तं न पश्यामि नलं यदि। असङ्ख्येयगुणं वीरं विनशिष्याम्यसंशयम् ॥०३-७१-९॥
adya candrābhavaktraṃ taṃ na paśyāmi nalaṃ yadi। asaṅkhyeyaguṇaṃ vīraṃ vinaśiṣyāmyasaṃśayam ॥03-71-9॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; चन्द्राभवक्त्रं (candrābhavaktram) - moon-like-faced; तं (taṃ) - him; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; यदि (yadi) - if; असङ्ख्येयगुणं (asaṅkhyeyaguṇam) - possessed of countless virtues; वीरं (vīram) - hero; विनशिष्यामि (vinaśiṣyāmi) - I shall perish; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Today, if I do not see him Nala, the moon-like-faced, the hero endowed with countless virtues, I shall perish without doubt.)
Today, if I do not see Nala, whose face is like the moon and who is a hero of countless virtues, I will surely perish. (03-71-9)
यदि वै तस्य वीरस्य बाह्वोर्नाद्याहमन्तरम्। प्रविशामि सुखस्पर्शं विनशिष्याम्यसंशयम् ॥०३-७१-१०॥
yadi vai tasya vīrasya bāhvornādyāhamantaram। praviśāmi sukhasparśaṃ vinaśiṣyāmyasaṃśayam ॥03-71-10॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - of the two arms; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; अहम् (aham) - I; अन्तरम् (antaram) - the space between; प्रविशामि (praviśāmi) - enter; सुखस्पर्शं (sukhasparśam) - pleasant touch; विनशिष्यामि (vinaśiṣyāmi) - I will perish; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(If indeed of him, the hero, of the two arms, not today I the space between enter, the pleasant touch, I will perish without doubt.)
If today I do not enter the space between the arms of that hero and feel his pleasant touch, I will certainly perish without doubt. (03-71-10)
यदि मां मेघनिर्घोषो नोपगच्छति नैषधः। अद्य चामीकरप्रख्यो विनशिष्याम्यसंशयम् ॥०३-७१-११॥
yadi māṃ meghanirghoṣo nopagacchati naiṣadhaḥ। adya cāmīkaraprakhyo vinaśiṣyāmyasaṃśayam ॥03-71-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; मेघनिर्घोषः (meghanirghoṣaḥ) - the one whose sound is like thunder; न (na) - not; उपगच्छति (upagacchati) - approaches; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - Nala (king of Niṣadha); अद्य (adya) - today; च (ca) - and; अमीकरप्रख्यः (cāmīkaraprakhyaḥ) - the one resembling gold; विनशिष्यामि (vinaśiṣyāmi) - I shall perish; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(If the one whose sound is like thunder, Nala, does not approach me, today the one resembling gold, I shall perish without doubt.)
If Nala, whose sound is like thunder, does not come to me today, I, who shine like gold, will surely perish without doubt. (03-71-11)
यदि मां सिंहविक्रान्तो मत्तवारणवारणः। नाभिगच्छति राजेन्द्रो विनशिष्याम्यसंशयम् ॥०३-७१-१२॥
yadi māṁ siṁhavikrānto mattavāraṇavāraṇaḥ। nābhigacchati rājendro vinaśiṣyāmyasaṁśayam॥03-71-12॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; सिंहविक्रान्तः (siṁhavikrāntaḥ) - lion-strided; मत्तवारणवारणः (mattavāraṇavāraṇaḥ) - intoxicated-elephant-subduer; न (na) - not; अभिगच्छति (abhigacchati) - approaches; राजेन्द्रः (rājendraḥ) - O king; विनशिष्यामि (vinaśiṣyāmi) - I shall perish; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - doubtlessly;]
(If me lion-strided intoxicated-elephant-subduer not approaches O king, I shall perish doubtlessly.)
O king, if that lion-striding, intoxicated elephant-subduer does not come to me, I shall certainly perish without doubt. (03-71-12)
न स्मराम्यनृतं किञ्चिन्न स्मराम्यनुपाकृतम्। न च पर्युषितं वाक्यं स्वैरेष्वपि महात्मनः ॥०३-७१-१३॥
na smarāmy anṛtaṃ kiñcin na smarāmy anupākṛtam। na ca paryuṣitaṃ vākyaṃ svaireṣv api mahātmanaḥ ॥03-71-13॥
[न (na) - not; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; अनृतं (anṛtam) - falsehood; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न (na) - not; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; अनुपाकृतम् (anupākṛtam) - not-beneficial (not well-treated); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पर्युषितं (paryuṣitam) - stale, old; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; स्वैरेषु (svaireṣu) - among the free, independent ones; अपि (api) - even; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great souls;]
(Not I remember falsehood anything, not I remember not-beneficial; not and stale speech among the independent ones even (the) great souls.)
I do not remember ever uttering a single falsehood, nor do I recall saying anything unkind; nor do I remember speaking words that were stale, even among the most independent and great souls. (03-71-13)
प्रभुः क्षमावान्वीरश्च मृदुर्दान्तो जितेन्द्रियः। रहोऽनीचानुवर्ती च क्लीबवन्मम नैषधः ॥०३-७१-१४॥
prabhuḥ kṣamāvān vīraś ca mṛdur dānto jitendriyaḥ। raho'nīcānuvartī ca klībavan mama naiṣadhaḥ ॥03-71-14॥
[प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; master; क्षमावान् (kṣamāvān) - endowed with forgiveness; patient; वीरः (vīraḥ) - heroic; brave; च (ca) - and; मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - gentle; soft; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - subdued; self-restrained; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; self-controlled; रहे (rahe) - in secret; in solitude; अन्यून् (anūna) - not proud; humble; अनुवर्ती (anuvartī) - obedient; follower; च (ca) - and; क्लीबवत् (klībavat) - like an unmanly one; like a weakling; मम (mama) - my; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the Naiṣadha; Nala;]
(The lord, endowed with forgiveness, heroic and gentle, subdued, self-controlled; in secret, not proud, obedient and like an unmanly one, my Naiṣadha.)
My Naiṣadha (Nala), though a lord, patient, heroic, gentle, subdued, and self-controlled, is humble, obedient, and in private seems almost unmanly.
गुणांस्तस्य स्मरन्त्या मे तत्पराया दिवानिशम्। हृदयं दीर्यत इदं शोकात्प्रियविनाकृतम् ॥०३-७१-१५॥
guṇāṃs tasya smarantyā me tat-parāyā divā-niśam। hṛdayaṃ dīryata idaṃ śokāt priya-vinā-kṛtam॥03-71-15॥
[गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्मरन्त्या (smarantyā) - by remembering; मे (me) - to me; तत्परायाः (tat-parāyāḥ) - absorbed in that; दिवा (divā) - by day; निशम् (niśam) - by night; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - the heart; दीर्यते (dīryate) - is torn; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शोकात् (śokāt) - from sorrow; प्रियविनाकृतम् (priya-vinā-kṛtam) - caused by separation from beloved;]
(By remembering his qualities, to me, absorbed in that, by day, by night, the heart, is torn, this, from sorrow, caused by separation from beloved.)
As I, completely absorbed, remember his qualities day and night, my heart is torn with sorrow because of being deprived of my beloved. (03-71-15)
बृहदश्व उवाच॥
bṛhadaśva uvāca॥
[बृहदश्व (bṛhadaśva) - Bṛhadaśva; (a proper name); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke;]
(Bṛhadaśva spoke;)
Bṛhadaśva said;
एवं विलपमाना सा नष्टसञ्ज्ञेव भारत। आरुरोह महद्वेश्म पुण्यश्लोकदिदृक्षया ॥०३-७१-१६॥
evaṃ vilapamānā sā naṣṭasañjñe'va bhārata। āruroha mahadveśma puṇyaślokadidṛkṣayā ॥03-71-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विलपमाना (vilapamānā) - lamenting; सा (sā) - she; नष्टसञ्ज्ञा (naṣṭasañjñā) - lost-consciousness; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; महत्-वेश्म (mahad-veśma) - great-mansion; पुण्यश्लोक-दिदृक्षया (puṇyaśloka-didṛkṣayā) - with the desire to see the illustrious one;]
(Thus lamenting, she, as if having lost consciousness, O Bhārata, ascended the great mansion with the desire to see the illustrious one.)
Thus, lamenting as if she had lost her senses, she, O Bhārata, ascended the great mansion in order to see the illustrious one. (03-71-16)
ततो मध्यमकक्षायां ददर्श रथमास्थितम्। ऋतुपर्णं महीपालं सहवार्ष्णेयबाहुकम् ॥०३-७१-१७॥
tato madhyamakakṣāyāṃ dadarśa rathamāsthitam। ṛtuparṇaṃ mahīpālaṃ sahavārṣṇeyabāhukam॥03-71-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; then; मध्यमकक्षायाम् (madhyamakakṣāyām) - in the middle chamber; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - seated; ऋतुपर्णम् (ṛtuparṇam) - Ṛtuparṇa (proper noun); महीपालम् (mahīpālam) - king; ruler of the earth; सह (saha) - with; together with; वार्ष्णेयबाहुकम् (vārṣṇeya-bāhukam) - Vārṣṇeya and Bāhuka;]
(Then in the middle chamber he saw the chariot seated, Ṛtuparṇa, king, with Vārṣṇeya and Bāhuka.)
Then, in the middle chamber, he saw the chariot with king Ṛtuparṇa, accompanied by Vārṣṇeya and Bāhuka. (03-71-17)
ततोऽवतीर्य वार्ष्णेयो बाहुकश्च रथोत्तमात्। हयांस्तानवमुच्याथ स्थापयामासतू रथम् ॥०३-७१-१८॥
tato'vatīrya vārṣṇeyo bāhukaś ca rathottamāt। hayāṃs tān avamucyātha sthāpayām āsa tu ratham॥03-71-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; वार्ष्णेयः (vārṣṇeyaḥ) - the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka (name of a person); च (ca) - and; रथोत्तमात् (rathottamāt) - from the excellent chariot; हयान् (hayān) - horses; तान् (tān) - those; अवमुच्या (avamucya) - having untied; अथ (atha) - then; स्थापयामास (sthāpayām āsa) - caused to be stationed; तु (tu) - but; रथम् (ratham) - the chariot;]
(Then, having descended, the Vārṣṇeya (descendant of Vṛṣṇi), and Bāhuka, from the excellent chariot, horses those having untied, then caused to be stationed but the chariot.)
Then, having alighted from the excellent chariot, Vārṣṇeya Bāhuka untied those horses and then stationed the chariot. (03-71-18)
सोऽवतीर्य रथोपस्थादृतुपर्णो नराधिपः। उपतस्थे महाराज भीमं भीमपराक्रमम् ॥०३-७१-१९॥
so'vatīrya rathopasthād r̥tuparṇo narādhipaḥ। upatasthe mahārāja bhīmaṃ bhīmaparākramam ॥03-71-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having alighted; रथोपस्थात् (rathopasthāt) - from the chariot seat; ऋतुपर्णः (r̥tuparṇaḥ) - R̥tuparṇa; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; उपतस्थे (upatasthe) - approached; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; भीमपराक्रमम् (bhīmaparākramam) - of mighty prowess;]
(He, having alighted from the chariot seat, R̥tuparṇa the king approached O great king Bhīma of mighty prowess.)
Having descended from the chariot seat, King R̥tuparṇa approached Bhīma, the mighty warrior, O great king. (03-71-19)
तं भीमः प्रतिजग्राह पूजया परया ततः। अकस्मात्सहसा प्राप्तं स्त्रीमन्त्रं न स्म विन्दति ॥०३-७१-२०॥
taṃ bhīmaḥ pratijagrāha pūjayā parayā tataḥ। akasmātsa hasā prāptaṃ strīmantraṃ na sma vindati ॥03-71-20॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; पूजया (pūjayā) - with honor; परया (parayā) - supreme; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; सहसा (sahasā) - instantly; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - arrived; स्त्री (strī) - woman; मन्त्रं (mantraṃ) - mantra; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; विन्दति (vindati) - finds;]
(Him Bhima received with honor supreme; thereafter, suddenly instantly arrived, the woman mantra not indeed finds.)
Bhima received him with supreme honor; thereafter, the woman, having suddenly and instantly arrived, indeed does not find the mantra. (03-71-20)
किं कार्यं स्वागतं तेऽस्तु राज्ञा पृष्टश्च भारत। नाभिजज्ञे स नृपतिर्दुहित्रर्थे समागतम् ॥०३-७१-२१॥
kiṃ kāryaṃ svāgataṃ te 'stu rājñā pṛṣṭaś ca bhārata. nābhijajñe sa nṛpatir duhitṛ arthe samāgatam ॥03-71-21॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; कार्यं (kāryam) - purpose; स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - (he was) asked; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; अभिजज्ञे (abhijajñe) - (he) recognized; सः (saḥ) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; दुहितर्-अर्थे (duhitṛ-arthe) - for the sake of (his) daughter; समागतम् (samāgatam) - who had arrived;]
(What purpose? Welcome to you be! By the king (he was) asked, and O Bhārata, not recognized he the king—for the daughter's sake who had arrived.)
"What is your purpose? Welcome to you!" Thus the king asked, O Bhārata, but the king did not recognize him, who had come for the sake of his daughter. (03-71-21)
ऋतुपर्णोऽपि राजा स धीमान्सत्यपराक्रमः। राजानं राजपुत्रं वा न स्म पश्यति कञ्चन ॥ नैव स्वयंवरकथां न च विप्रसमागमम् ॥०३-७१-२२॥
ṛtuparṇo'pi rājā sa dhīmān satyaparākramaḥ। rājānaṃ rājaputraṃ vā na sma paśyati kañcana॥ naiva svayaṃvarakathāṃ na ca viprasamāgamam॥03-71-22॥
[ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Rituparṇa; (a proper name); अपि (api) - also; indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; सः (saḥ) - he; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; सत्यपराक्रमः (satyaparākramaḥ) - truly courageous; truthful in valor; राजानम् (rājānam) - king (accusative); राजपुत्रं (rājaputram) - prince; (accusative); वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - formerly; ever; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; कञ्चन (kañcana) - any; anyone; नैव (na eva) - not at all; स्वयंवरकथाम् (svayaṃvarakathām) - the story of Svayamvara; tale of the self-choice ceremony; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; विप्रसमागमम् (viprasamāgamam) - meeting with the brāhmaṇas;]
(Rituparṇa also, the king, he wise, truly courageous; king, prince or not ever sees anyone. Not at all the story of the Svayamvara nor the meeting with brāhmaṇas.)
King Rituparṇa, who was wise and truly courageous, did not see any king or prince at all. He heard neither the story of the Svayamvara nor of any meeting with the brāhmaṇas. (03-71-22)
ततो विगणयन्राजा मनसा कोसलाधिपः। आगतोऽस्मीत्युवाचैनं भवन्तमभिवादकः ॥०३-७१-२३॥
tato vigaṇayan rājā manasā kosalādhipaḥ। āgato'smītyuvācainaṃ bhavantam abhivādakaḥ॥03-71-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विगणयन् (vigaṇayan) - considering; राजा (rājā) - the king; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; कोसलाधिपः (kosalādhipaḥ) - the lord of Kosala; आगतः (āgataḥ) - arrived; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; एनम् (enam) - to him; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - your honor; अभिवादकः (abhivādakaḥ) - greeting;]
(Then, considering, the king with his mind, the lord of Kosala, "I have arrived" thus said to him, greeting your honor.)
Then, considering with his mind, the king, lord of Kosala, greeted your honor and said to him, "I have arrived." (03-71-23)
राजापि च स्मयन्भीमो मनसाभिविचिन्तयत्। अधिकं योजनशतं तस्यागमनकारणम् ॥०३-७१-२४॥
rājāpi ca smayan bhīmo manasābhivicintayat। adhikaṃ yojanaśataṃ tasyāgamanakāraṇam ॥03-71-24॥
[राजा अपि (rājā api) - king also; च (ca) - and; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; मनसा अभिविचिन्तयत् (manasā abhivicintayat) - with mind, considered deeply; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - greater; योजनशतम् (yojanaśatam) - hundred yojanas; तस्य (tasya) - his; आगमनकारणम् (āgamanakāraṇam) - the reason for coming;]
(The king also, and smiling, Bhima with mind considered deeply: greater, hundred yojanas, his, the reason for coming.)
The king Bhima, also smiling, pondered in his mind the reason for that person's coming from more than a hundred yojanas away. (03-71-24)
ग्रामान्बहूनतिक्रम्य नाध्यगच्छद्यथातथम्। अल्पकार्यं विनिर्दिष्टं तस्यागमनकारणम् ॥०३-७१-२५॥
grāmān bahūn atikramya nādhyagacchad yathā tatham। alpa-kāryaṃ vinirdiṣṭaṃ tasya āgamana-kāraṇam॥03-71-25॥
[ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages; बहून् (bahūn) - many; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed; न (na) - not; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - he entered; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - thus; अल्पकार्यं (alpa-kāryam) - little (small) business; विनिर्दिष्टं (vinirdiṣṭam) - specified; तस्य (tasya) - his; आगमनकारणम् (āgamana-kāraṇam) - reason for coming;]
(Having passed many villages, he did not enter (them) as such. Specified was little business as the reason for his coming.)
He passed by many villages without entering them, as was the case. A small task had been specified as his reason for coming. (03-71-25)
नैतदेवं स नृपतिस्तं सत्कृत्य व्यसर्जयत्। विश्राम्यतामिति वदन्क्लान्तोऽसीति पुनः पुनः ॥०३-७१-२६॥
naitadevaṁ sa nṛpatistaṁ satkṛtya vyasarjayat। viśrāmyatāmiti vadanklānto'sīti punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-71-26॥
[नैतदेवं (na etad evaṁ) - not this thus; स (sa) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; तं (taṁ) - him; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; व्यसर्जयत् (vyasarjayat) - dismissed; विश्राम्यताम् (viśrāmyatām) - let (him) rest; इति (iti) - thus; वदन् (vadan) - saying; क्लान्तः (klāntaḥ) - weary; असि (asi) - you are; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Not this thus he king him having honored dismissed. "Let (him) rest," thus saying, "You are weary," thus again and again.)
Not so; the king, having honored him, dismissed him. Saying again and again, "Let him rest," (and) "You are weary." (03-71-26)
स सत्कृतः प्रहृष्टात्मा प्रीतः प्रीतेन पार्थिवः। राजप्रेष्यैरनुगतो दिष्टं वेश्म समाविशत् ॥०३-७१-२७॥
sa satkṛtaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā prītaḥ prītena pārthivaḥ। rājapreṣyairanugato diṣṭaṃ veśma samāviśat॥03-71-27॥
[स (sa) - he; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; प्रहृष्टात्मा (prahṛṣṭātmā) - joyful in spirit; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - delighted; प्रीतेन (prītena) - with pleasure; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; राजप्रेष्यैः (rājapreṣyaiḥ) - by the royal messengers; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - accompanied; दिष्टं (diṣṭam) - appointed; वेश्म (veśma) - house; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(He, honored, joyful in spirit, delighted, the king with pleasure, accompanied by the royal messengers, entered the appointed house.)
He, having been honored, joyful in spirit and delighted, the king accompanied by the royal messengers, entered the assigned palace. (03-71-27)
ऋतुपर्णे गते राजन्वार्ष्णेयसहिते नृपे। बाहुको रथमास्थाय रथशालामुपागमत् ॥०३-७१-२८॥
ṛtuparṇe gate rājan vārṣṇeyasahite nṛpe। bāhuko ratham āsthāya rathaśālām upāgamat ॥03-71-28॥
[ऋतुपर्णे (ṛtuparṇe) - to Ṛtuparṇa; गते (gate) - having gone; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वार्ष्णेयसहिते (vārṣṇeyasahite) - accompanied by Vārṣṇeya; नृपे (nṛpe) - the king; बाहुको (bāhuko) - Bāhuka; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; रथशालाम् (rathaśālām) - chariot-hall; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached;]
(To Ṛtuparṇa, having gone, O king, accompanied by Vārṣṇeya, the king, Bāhuka, having ascended the chariot, approached the chariot-hall.)
When King Ṛtuparṇa, accompanied by Vārṣṇeya, had set out, Bāhuka mounted the chariot and proceeded to the chariot-hall. (03-71-28)
स मोचयित्वा तानश्वान्परिचार्य च शास्त्रतः। स्वयं चैतान्समाश्वास्य रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥०३-७१-२९॥
sa mocayitvā tānaśvān paricārya ca śāstrataḥ। svayaṃ caitān samāśvāsya rathopastha upāviśat॥03-71-29॥
[स (sa) - he; मोचयित्वा (mocayitvā) - having released; तान् (tān) - those; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; परिचार्य (paricārya) - having tended; च (ca) - and; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to the treatises; स्वयं (svayam) - himself; च (ca) - and; एतान् (etān) - these; समाश्वास्य (samāśvāsya) - having comforted; रथोपस्थे (rathopasthe) - on the seat of the chariot; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - he sat down;]
(He having released those horses, having tended (them) and according to the treatises, himself and, having comforted these, on the seat of the chariot, he sat down.)
He released those horses, tended to them as prescribed by the treatises, and after comforting them himself, sat down upon the seat of the chariot. (03-71-29)
दमयन्ती तु शोकार्ता दृष्ट्वा भाङ्गस्वरिं नृपम्। सूतपुत्रं च वार्ष्णेयं बाहुकं च तथाविधम् ॥०३-७१-३०॥
damayantī tu śokārtā dṛṣṭvā bhāṅgasvariṃ nṛpam. sūtaputraṃ ca vārṣṇeyaṃ bāhukaṃ ca tathāvidham ॥03-71-30॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; तु (tu) - but; शोकार्ता (śokārtā) - afflicted with grief; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भाङ्गस्वरिं (bhāṅgasvariṃ) - with broken voice; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; सूतपुत्रं (sūtaputraṃ) - son of the charioteer; च (ca) - and; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇeyaṃ) - son of Vṛṣṇi; बाहुकं (bāhukaṃ) - Bāhuka; च (ca) - and; तथाविधम् (tathāvidham) - of such form;]
(Damayanti but afflicted with grief having seen the king with broken voice, the son of the charioteer and the son of Vṛṣṇi and Bāhuka of such form.)
But Damayanti, afflicted by grief, seeing the king whose voice was broken, the charioteer's son, the Vṛṣṇi, and Bāhuka in such a state, (03-71-30)
चिन्तयामास वैदर्भी कस्यैष रथनिस्वनः। नलस्येव महानासीन्न च पश्यामि नैषधम् ॥०३-७१-३१॥
cintayāmāsa vaidarbhī kasyaiṣa ratha-nisvanaḥ। nalasyaiva mahān āsīn na ca paśyāmi naiṣadham॥03-71-31॥
[चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - she began to ponder; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - the princess of Vidarbha; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; एष (eṣa) - this; रथनिस्वनः (ratha-nisvanaḥ) - chariot noise; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; इव (iva) - as if; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; नैषधम् (naiṣadham) - Nishadha (Nala);]
(The princess of Vidarbha began to ponder, 'Of whom is this chariot noise? It was as if great, of Nala, and I do not see Nala.')
The princess of Vidarbha thought, 'Whose chariot noise is this? It was great like that of Nala, but I do not see Nala (the Nishadha king).' (03-71-31)
वार्ष्णेयेन भवेन्नूनं विद्या सैवोपशिक्षिता। तेनास्य रथनिर्घोषो नलस्येव महानभूत् ॥०३-७१-३२॥
vārṣṇeyena bhaven nūnaṁ vidyā saiva upaśikṣitā। tenāsya rathanirghoṣo nalasyaiva mahān abhūt ॥03-71-32॥
[वार्ष्णेयेन (vārṣṇeyena) - by Vārṣṇeya; भवेत् (bhavet) - it would be; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; सा (sā) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; उपशिक्षिता (upaśikṣitā) - thoroughly taught; तेन (tena) - by him; अस्य (asya) - of him; रथनिर्घोषः (rathanirghoṣaḥ) - the chariot's sound; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; इव (iva) - like; महान् (mahān) - great; अभूत् (abhūt) - became;]
(By Vārṣṇeya, surely that knowledge indeed was well-taught; by him the chariot's sound, like Nala's, became great.)
Surely, it is Vārṣṇeya who has been trained in that art; therefore, the sound of his chariot has become as great as Nala's. (03-71-32)
आहो स्विदृतुपर्णोऽपि यथा राजा नलस्तथा। ततोऽयं रथनिर्घोषो नैषधस्येव लक्ष्यते ॥०३-७१-३३॥
āho svid ṛtuparṇo'pi yathā rājā nalas tathā। tato'yaṃ rathanirghoṣo naiṣadhasyaiva lakṣyate ॥03-71-33॥
[आहो (āho) - indeed; स्विद् (svid) - perhaps; ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa (proper noun); अपि (api) - also; यथा (yathā) - just as; राजा (rājā) - king; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala (proper noun); तथा (tathā) - so; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; रथनिर्घोषः (rathanirghoṣaḥ) - chariot-sound; नैषधस्य (naiṣadhasya) - of the king of Niṣadha (Nala); इव (iva) - like; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is perceived;]
(Indeed, perhaps Ṛtuparṇa also, just as king Nala so; then this chariot-sound of the king of Niṣadha like is perceived.)
Indeed, perhaps this is Ṛtuparṇa, also just as king Nala; therefore, this chariot sound is perceived like that of the king of Niṣadha (Nala). (03-71-33)
एवं वितर्कयित्वा तु दमयन्ती विशां पते। दूतीं प्रस्थापयामास नैषधान्वेषणे नृप ॥०३-७१-३४॥
evaṁ vitarkayitvā tu damayantī viśāṁ pate। dūtīṁ prasthāpayāmāsa naiṣadhānveṣaṇe nṛpa ॥03-71-34॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; वितर्कयित्वा (vitarkayitvā) - having considered; तु (tu) - but; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; दूतीं (dūtīm) - messenger (female); प्रस्थापयामास (prasthāpayāmāsa) - she sent; नैषधान्वेषणे (naiṣadhānveṣaṇe) - for searching the Niṣadha prince; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Thus, having considered, but Damayanti, O lord of the people, messenger (female) she sent for searching the Niṣadha prince, O king.)
O king, thus having considered, Damayanti, O lord of the people, sent a messenger to search for the prince of Niṣadha. (03-71-34)
