[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; केशिनि (keśini) - O Keśinī; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; क (ka) - who; एष (eṣa) - this; रथवाहकः (rathavāhakaḥ) - charioteer; उपविष्टः (upaviṣṭaḥ) - seated; रथोपस्थे (rathopasthe) - in the chariot's seat; विकृतः (vikṛtaḥ) - deformed; ह्रस्वबाहुकः (hrasvabāhukaḥ) - short-armed;]
(Go, O Keśinī, know who this charioteer is, seated in the chariot's seat, deformed, short-armed.)
O Keśinī, go and find out who this charioteer is, who is seated in the chariot, deformed and with short arms. (03-72-1)
अभ्येत्य कुशलं भद्रे मृदुपूर्वं समाहिता। पृच्छेथाः पुरुषं ह्येनं यथातत्त्वमनिन्दिते ॥०३-७२-२॥
abhyetya kuśalaṃ bhadre mṛdupūrvaṃ samāhitā। pṛcchethāḥ puruṣaṃ hyenaṃ yathātattvamanindite॥03-72-2॥
[अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - well-being; भद्रे (bhadre) - O gentle lady; मृदुपूर्वम् (mṛdupūrvam) - with gentle (words); समाहिता (samāhitā) - attentively; पृच्छेथाः (pṛcchethāḥ) - you should ask; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - the person; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - this; यथातत्त्वम् (yathātattvam) - as it is in reality; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(Having approached, the well-being, O gentle lady, with gentleness, attentively, you should ask the person indeed, this, as it is in reality, O blameless one.)
O gentle and blameless lady, having attentively approached, gently ask this person about his well-being, just as it truly is. (03-72-2)
अत्र मे महती शङ्का भवेदेष नलो नृपः। तथा च मे मनस्तुष्टिर्हृदयस्य च निर्वृतिः ॥०३-७२-३॥
atra me mahatī śaṅkā bhaved eṣa nalo nṛpaḥ। tathā ca me manas-tuṣṭir hṛdayasya ca nirvṛtiḥ॥03-72-3॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - my; महती (mahatī) - great; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - doubt; भवेत् (bhavet) - might arise; एष (eṣa) - this; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; तथा (tathā) - so; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; मनस्तुष्टिः (manas-tuṣṭiḥ) - contentment of mind; हृदयस्य (hṛdayasya) - of the heart; च (ca) - and; निर्वृतिः (nirvṛtiḥ) - joyful repose;]
(Here, my great doubt might arise—this (is) Nala the king. So also my contentment of mind and of the heart (is) joyful repose.)
Here, a great doubt arises for me—whether this is Nala the king. Yet, this also brings contentment to my mind and joy to my heart. (03-72-3)
ब्रूयाश्चैनं कथान्ते त्वं पर्णादवचनं यथा। प्रतिवाक्यं च सुश्रोणि बुध्येथास्त्वमनिन्दिते ॥०३-७२-४॥
brūyāś cainaṃ kathānte tvaṃ parṇād avacanaṃ yathā। prativākyaṃ ca suśroṇi budhyethās tvam anindite ॥03-72-4॥
[ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - may you say; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this (to him); कथा-अन्ते (kathānte) - at the end of the conversation; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पर्णात् (parṇāt) - from Parṇa; अवचनम् (avacanam) - the statement; यथा (yathā) - as; प्रतिवाक्यम् (prativākyam) - response; च (ca) - and; सु-श्रोणि (su-śroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped one; बुध्येथाः (budhyethāḥ) - may you understand; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless (one);]
(May you say also this to him at the end of the conversation, as the statement from Parṇa; and may you, O beautiful-hipped one, understand the response, O blameless one.)
At the end of the conversation, you should say to him the message from Parṇa, and you, O beautiful-hipped and blameless one, should also understand his reply. (03-72-4)

evaṃ samāhitā gatvā dūtī bāhukaṃ abravīt। damayanty api kalyāṇī prāsādasthān vavaikṣata ॥03-72-5॥

कदा वै प्रस्थिता यूयं किमर्थमिह चागताः। तत्त्वं ब्रूहि यथान्यायं वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छति ॥०३-७२-७॥
kadā vai prasthitā yūyam kimartham iha ca āgatāḥ। tattvaṃ brūhi yathā-nyāyaṃ vaidarbhī śrotum icchati॥03-72-7॥
[कदा (kadā) - when; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रस्थिता (prasthitā) - set out; यूयं (yūyam) - you (plural); किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - have come; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - the reality; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; यथान्यायम् (yathā-nyāyam) - according to propriety; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - Vaidarbhī (a lady from Vidarbha); श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(When indeed set out you, for what purpose here and have come; the reality tell according to propriety, Vaidarbhī to hear desires.)
When did you set out, and for what purpose have you come here? Tell the truth properly, for Vaidarbhī wishes to hear it. (03-72-7)

श्रुत्वा तं प्रस्थितो राजा शतयोजनयायिभिः। हयैर्वातजवैर्मुख्यैरहमस्य च सारथिः ॥०३-७२-९॥
śrutvā taṃ prasthito rājā śatayojanayāyibhiḥ। hayair vātajavair mukhyair aham asya ca sārathiḥ॥03-72-9॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; राजा (rājā) - the king; शतयोजनयायिभिः (śatayojanayāyibhiḥ) - with those going a hundred yojanas (per day); हयैः (hayaiḥ) - by horses; वातजवैः (vātajavaiḥ) - by (those) having the speed of the wind; मुख्यैः (mukhyaiḥ) - foremost; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्य (asya) - his; च (ca) - and; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer;]
(Having heard him, departed king with those going a hundred yojanas, by horses, by wind-speed, foremost, I, his and charioteer.)
Having heard him, the king set out with horses famed for covering a hundred yojanas a day, foremost in speed as the wind, and I was his charioteer. (03-72-9)

atha yo'sau tṛtīyo vaḥ sa kutaḥ kasya vā punaḥ। tvaṃ ca kasya kathaṃ cedaṃ tvayi karma samāhitam ॥03-72-10॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that (one); तृतीयः (tṛtīyaḥ) - third; वः (vaḥ) - of you (plural); सः (saḥ) - he; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; कस्य (kasya) - whose; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; कस्य (kasya) - of whom; कथम् (katham) - how; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; कर्म (karma) - action; समाहितम् (samāhitam) - settled; brought together;]
(Now, who that third of you is, from where, whose or again; you also, of whom, how, and this action has been settled in you.)
Now, who is that third among you—where is he from, whose is he, or again? And you—whose are you, how has this action come to be centered in you? (03-72-10)

puṇyaślokasya vai sūto vārṣṇeya iti viśrutaḥ। sa nale vidrute bhadre bhāṅgasvarim upasthitaḥ॥03-72-11॥
[पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of Puṇyaśloka; वै (vai) - indeed; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - Vārṣṇeya; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; स (sa) - he; नले (nale) - to Nala; विद्रुते (vidrute) - being agitated; भद्रे (bhadre) - O blessed one; भाङ्गस्वरिम् (bhāṅgasvarim) - Bhāṅgasvarī (the princess); उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - arrived;]
(Of Puṇyaśloka indeed, the charioteer Vārṣṇeya thus well-known; he to Nala, being agitated, O blessed one, Bhāṅgasvarī arrived.)
Indeed, the charioteer of Puṇyaśloka, Vārṣṇeya by name and well-known as such, O blessed lady, approached Bhāṅgasvarī when Nala was disturbed. (03-72-11)
अहमप्यश्वकुशलः सूदत्वे च सुनिष्ठितः। ऋतुपर्णेन सारथ्ये भोजने च वृतः स्वयम् ॥०३-७२-१२॥
aham apy aśvakuzalaḥ sūdatve ca suniṣṭhitaḥ। ṛtuparṇena sārathye bhojane ca vṛtaḥ svayam॥03-72-12॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अश्वकुशलः (aśvakuzalaḥ) - skilled with horses; सूदत्वे (sūdatve) - in cooking; च (ca) - and; सुनिष्ठितः (suniṣṭhitaḥ) - well-trained; ऋतुपर्णेन (ṛtuparṇena) - by Ṛtuparṇa; सारथ्ये (sārathye) - in charioteering; भोजने (bhojane) - in food (preparation or serving); च (ca) - and; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - employed; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself;]
(I also skilled with horses, in cooking and well-trained, by Ṛtuparṇa in charioteering, in food and employed myself.)

[अथ (atha) - then; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; वार्ष्णेयः (Vārṣṇeyaḥ) - Vārṣṇeya (the son of Vṛṣṇi); क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; राजा (rājā) - king; नलः (Nalaḥ) - Nala; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; कथञ्चित् (kathaṃcit) - somehow; त्वयि (tvayi) - by you; वै (vai) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; कथितं (kathitaṃ) - spoken; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; तु (tu) - but; बाहुक (Bāhuka) - Bāhuka;]
(Then Vārṣṇeya knows where indeed king Nala has gone. Somehow by you indeed by him spoken may be but, O Bāhuka.)
Then Vārṣṇeya may find out where King Nala has gone. Somehow, perhaps, this may be revealed to you by Bāhuka. (03-72-13)

इहैव पुत्रौ निक्षिप्य नलस्याशुभकर्मणः। गतस्ततो यथाकामं नैष जानाति नैषधम् ॥०३-७२-१४॥
ihaiva putrau nikṣipya nalasyāśubhakarmaṇaḥ। gatastato yathākāmaṃ naiṣa jānāti naiṣadham ॥03-72-14॥
[इहैव (ihaiva) - here itself; पुत्रौ (putrau) - the two sons; निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having left behind; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; अशुभकर्मणः (aśubhakarmaṇaḥ) - who performed evil deeds; गतः (gataḥ) - departed; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; यथाकामं (yathākāmaṃ) - as he wished; नैष (naiṣa) - this one (person); जानाति (jānāti) - does not know; नैषधम् (naiṣadham) - the king Nala;]
(Here itself, the two sons having left behind of Nala, who performed evil deeds, departed from there as he wished; this one does not know (about) Nala.)
Leaving the two sons of Nala, who had committed evil deeds, here itself, he departed from there as he wished; this person does not know about Nala. (03-72-14)
न चान्यः पुरुषः कश्चिन्नलं वेत्ति यशस्विनि। गूढश्चरति लोकेऽस्मिन्नष्टरूपो महीपतिः ॥०३-७२-१५॥
na cānyaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścinnalaṃ vetti yaśasvini. gūḍhaścarati loke'sminnaṣṭarūpo mahīpatiḥ ॥03-72-15॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; न अलम् (na alam) - not able; वित्ति (vetti) - knows; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one; गूढः (gūḍhaḥ) - hidden; चरति (carati) - moves; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अष्ट-रूपः (aṣṭa-rūpaḥ) - of eight forms; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - sovereign of the earth;]
(Not and another man any not able knows, O illustrious one; hidden moves in the world in this, of eight forms, the sovereign of the earth.)
And no other man is able to know, O illustrious one; in this world, the king, taking eight forms, moves about in secret. (03-72-15)
आत्मैव हि नलं वेत्ति या चास्य तदनन्तरा। न हि वै तानि लिङ्गानि नलं शंसन्ति कर्हिचित् ॥०३-७२-१६॥
ātmaiva hi nalaṃ vetti yā cāsya tadanantarā। na hi vai tāni liṅgāni nalaṃ śaṃsanti karhicit ॥03-72-16॥
[आत्मैव (ātma eva) - the self indeed; हि (hi) - surely; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; या (yā) - who; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; तदनन्तरा (tad-anantarā) - immediately after that; next to him; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वै (vai) - truly; तानि (tāni) - those; लिङ्गानि (liṅgāni) - signs; marks; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; शंसन्ति (śaṃsanti) - reveal; indicate; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time;]
(The self indeed knows Nala, and she who is immediately after him. Truly, those signs do not indicate Nala at any time.)
Only his own self and the woman nearest to him truly know Nala; for those marks never reveal Nala at any time. (03-72-16)

योऽसावयोध्यां प्रथमं गतवान्ब्राह्मणस्तदा। इमानि नारीवाक्यानि कथयानः पुनः पुनः ॥०३-७२-१७॥
yo'sāv ayodhyāṃ prathamaṃ gatavān brāhmaṇaḥ tadā. imāni nārī-vākyāni kathayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥03-72-17॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that (man); अयोध्यां (ayodhyāṃ) - to Ayodhyā (the city); प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; गतवान् (gatavān) - gone; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa (Brahmin); तदा (tadā) - at that time; इमानि (imāni) - these; नारीवाक्यानि (nārī-vākyāni) - women's words; कथयानः (kathayānaḥ) - recounting; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Who that man to Ayodhyā first having gone, the Brāhmaṇa at that time, these women's words recounting again and again.)
That Brāhmaṇa, who had first gone to Ayodhyā at that time, kept repeating these words of the women again and again. (03-72-17)
क्व नु त्वं कितव छित्त्वा वस्त्रार्धं प्रस्थितो मम। उत्सृज्य विपिने सुप्तामनुरक्तां प्रियां प्रिय ॥०३-७२-१८॥
kva nu tvaṃ kitava chittvā vastrārdhaṃ prasthito mama। utsṛjya vipine suptām-anuraktāṃ priyāṃ priya ॥03-72-18॥
[क्व (kva) - where; नु (nu) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कितव (kitava) - deceitful one; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut; वस्त्रार्धं (vastrārdham) - half of the garment; प्रस्थितो (prasthitaḥ) - departed; मम (mama) - of me; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; विपिने (vipine) - in the forest; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - asleep; अनुरक्ताम् (anuraktām) - attached; प्रियाम् (priyām) - beloved (f. acc.); प्रिय (priya) - O beloved;]
(Where indeed you, deceitful one, having cut half of my garment, departed, having abandoned in the forest the beloved woman who was sleeping, attached, beloved, O beloved.)
Where have you gone, O deceitful one, after having cut away half of my garment and departed— abandoning me, your devoted and sleeping beloved, in the forest, O beloved? (3-72-18)
सा वै यथा समादिष्टा तत्रास्ते त्वत्प्रतीक्षिणी। दह्यमाना दिवारात्रं वस्त्रार्धेनाभिसंवृता ॥०३-७२-१९॥
sā vai yathā samādiṣṭā tatrāste tvatpratīkṣiṇī। dahyamānā divārātraṃ vastrārdhenābhisaṃvṛtā ॥03-72-19॥
[सा (sā) - she; वै (vai) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; समादिष्टा (samādiṣṭā) - thoroughly instructed; तत्र (tatra) - there; आस्ते (āste) - abides; त्वत्प्रतीक्षिणी (tvatpratīkṣiṇī) - expecting you; दह्यमाना (dahyamānā) - being tormented; दिवारात्रम् (divārātram) - day and night; वस्त्रार्धेन (vastrārdhena) - with half a garment; अभिसंवृता (abhisaṃvṛtā) - covered;]
(She indeed as instructed there abides, expecting you, being tormented day and night, covered with half a garment.)
She is truly living there, as instructed, awaiting you, tormented day and night, clothed only with half a garment. (03-72-19)
तस्या रुदन्त्याः सततं तेन दुःखेन पार्थिव। प्रसादं कुरु वै वीर प्रतिवाक्यं प्रयच्छ च ॥०३-७२-२०॥

O king, as she weeps constantly from that sorrow, show her your favor, O hero, and give her a reply. (03-72-20)
तस्यास्तत्प्रियमाख्यानं प्रब्रवीहि महामते। तदेव वाक्यं वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छत्यनिन्दिता ॥०३-७२-२१॥
tasyās-tat-priyam ākhyānaṁ prabravīhi mahā-mate। tad eva vākyaṁ vaidarbhī śrotum icchati aninditā॥03-72-21॥

O great-minded one, speak that dear story of hers; Vaidarbhi, the blameless, indeed wishes to hear that.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा प्रतिवचस्तस्य दत्तं त्वया किल। यत्पुरा तत्पुनस्त्वत्तो वैदर्भी श्रोतुमिच्छति ॥०३-७२-२२॥
etacchrutvā prativacas tasya dattaṃ tvayā kila। yat purā tat punas tvatto vaidarbhī śrotum icchati ॥03-72-22॥

(Having heard this, the reply to him, given by you indeed, which formerly (was), that again from you Vaidarbhi desires to hear.)
After hearing this, Vaidarbhi desires to hear once again from you the reply that you formerly gave to him. (03-72-22)

एवमुक्तस्य केशिन्या नलस्य कुरुनन्दन। हृदयं व्यथितं चासीदश्रुपूर्णे च लोचने ॥०३-७२-२३॥
evam-uktasya keśinyā nalasya kurunandana। hṛdayam vyathitaṃ cāsīd aśru-pūrṇe ca locane ॥03-72-23॥

(When thus spoken by Keśinī of Nala, O delight of the Kurus, the heart was distressed, and the eyes were filled with tears.)
O Kurunandana, when Keśinī spoke thus to Nala, his heart was distressed and his eyes were filled with tears. (03-72-23)
स निगृह्यात्मनो दुःखं दह्यमानो महीपतिः। बाष्पसंदिग्धया वाचा पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७२-२४॥
sa nigṛhyātmano duḥkhaṃ dahyamāno mahīpatiḥ। bāṣpasaṃdigdhyā vācā punarevedamabravīt ॥03-72-24॥
[स (sa) - he; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having restrained; आत्मनः (ātmanas) - of himself; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - being tormented; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; बाष्पसंदिग्धया (bāṣpasaṃdigdhyā) - choked with tears; वाचा (vācā) - with voice; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(He, having restrained his own sorrow, the king being tormented, with a voice choked with tears, again indeed this said.)
The king, restraining his own sorrow and tormented within, said this again with a voice choked with tears. (03-72-24)
वैषम्यमपि सम्प्राप्ता गोपायन्ति कुलस्त्रियः। आत्मानमात्मना सत्यो जितस्वर्गा न संशयः ॥०३-७२-२५॥
vaiṣamyam api samprāptā gopāyanti kulastriyaḥ। ātmānam ātmanā satyo jitasvargā na saṃśayaḥ॥03-72-25॥
[वैषम्यम् (vaiṣamyam) - adversity; अपि (api) - even; सम्प्राप्ताः (samprāptāḥ) - having obtained; गोपायन्ति (gopāyanti) - protect; कुलस्त्रियः (kulastriyaḥ) - noble women; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - themselves; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by themselves; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truly; जितस्वर्गाः (jitasvargāḥ) - those who have conquered heaven; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Even having obtained adversity, noble women protect themselves by themselves; truly, those who have conquered heaven, not doubt.)
Even when faced with adversity, noble women protect themselves; truly, they are conquerors of heaven, there is no doubt. (03-72-25)
रहिता भर्तृभिश्चैव न क्रुध्यन्ति कदाचन। प्राणांश्चारित्रकवचा धारयन्तीह सत्स्त्रियः ॥०३-७२-२६॥
rahitā bhartṛbhiś caiva na krudhyanti kadācana। prāṇāṃś cāritrakavacā dhārayantīha satstriyaḥ॥03-72-26॥
[रहिता (rahitā) - without; भर्तृभिः (bhartṛbhiḥ) - by husbands; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; न (na) - not; क्रुध्यन्ति (krudhyanti) - become angry; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; चारित्रकवचा (cāritrakavacā) - protected by the armor of character; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - sustain; इह (iha) - here; सत्स्त्रियः (sat-striyaḥ) - virtuous women;]
(Without husbands and indeed not becoming angry at any time, their life-breaths protected by the armor of character, here the virtuous women sustain.)
Here, the virtuous women, even when without their husbands, never become angry; protected by the armor of their character, they sustain their very lives. (03-72-26)
प्राणयात्रां परिप्रेप्सोः शकुनैर्हृतवाससः। आधिभिर्दह्यमानस्य श्यामा न क्रोद्धुमर्हति ॥०३-७२-२७॥
prāṇayātrāṃ pariprepsoḥ śakunair hṛtavāsasaḥ। ādhibhir dahyamānasya śyāmā na krodhum arhati॥03-72-27॥
[प्राणयात्राम् (prāṇayātrām) - for the maintenance of life; परिप्रेप्सोः (pariprepsoḥ) - of one desiring to protect (preserve); शकुनैः (śakunaiḥ) - by birds; हृतवाससः (hṛtavāsasaḥ) - whose clothing has been taken; आधिभिः (ādhibhiḥ) - by afflictions; दह्यमानस्य (dahyamānasya) - of one being tormented; श्यामा (śyāmā) - Śyāmā; न (na) - not; क्रोद्धुम् (krodhum) - to be angry; अर्हति (arhati) - ought to;]
(Śyāmā ought not to be angry with one whose clothing has been taken by birds, who is being tormented by afflictions, who desires to protect the maintenance of life.)
Śyāmā should not become angry with one who, wishing to survive, has had his clothes taken by birds and is being tormented by troubles. (03-72-27)
सत्कृतासत्कृता वापि पतिं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम्। भ्रष्टराज्यं श्रिया हीनं क्षुधितं व्यसनाप्लुतम् ॥०३-७२-२८॥
satkṛtāsatkṛtā vāpi patiṃ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam| bhraṣṭarājyaṃ śriyā hīnaṃ kṣudhitaṃ vyasanāplutam ॥03-72-28॥
[सत्कृता (satkṛtā) - honored; असत्कृता (asatkṛtā) - dishonored; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; पतिं (patiṃ) - husband; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; आगतं (āgatam) - come; भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa) - deprived; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; श्रियā (śriyā) - wealth; हीनं (hīnaṃ) - bereft; क्षुधितं (kṣudhitaṃ) - hungry; व्यसनाप्लुतम् (vyasanāplutam) - immersed in affliction;]
(Honored or dishonored even, husband having seen thus come, deprived of kingdom, bereft of wealth, hungry, immersed in affliction.)
Whether honored or dishonored, even if she sees her husband thus—who has come deprived of his kingdom, bereft of wealth, hungry, and overwhelmed with suffering.
एवं ब्रुवाणस्तद्वाक्यं नलः परमदुःखितः। न बाष्पमशकत्सोढुं प्ररुरोद च भारत ॥०३-७२-२९॥
evaṃ bruvāṇas tad vākyam nalaḥ paramaduḥkhitaḥ। na bāṣpam aśakat soḍhuṃ praruroda ca bhārata॥03-72-29॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ब्रुवाणः (bruvāṇaḥ) - speaking; तद्वाक्यं (tad vākyam) - those words; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; परमदुःखितः (paramaduḥkhitaḥ) - exceedingly distressed; न (na) - not; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; अशकत् (aśakat) - was able; सोढुं (soḍhuṃ) - to bear; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - wept aloud; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus speaking those words, Nala, exceedingly distressed, not tears was able to bear, wept aloud and, O Bhārata.)
While speaking thus those words, Nala, overwhelmed with grief, could not bear his tears and wept aloud, O Bhārata. (03-72-29)
ततः सा केशिनी गत्वा दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत्। तत्सर्वं कथितं चैव विकारं चैव तस्य तम् ॥०३-७२-३०॥
tataḥ sā keśinī gatvā damayantyai nyavedayat। tat sarvaṃ kathitaṃ caiva vikāraṃ caiva tasya tam ॥03-72-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; केशिनी (keśinī) - Keśinī; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; दमयन्त्यै (damayantyai) - to Damayantī; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - she reported; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कथितं (kathitaṃ) - related; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विकारं (vikāraṃ) - change; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - his; तम् (tam) - that;]
(Then she Keśinī having gone to Damayantī reported. That all related and indeed change and indeed his that.)
Then Keśinī, having gone to Damayantī, reported everything—she related all that had happened, as well as his condition. (03-72-30)
