Bṛhadaśva said.
दमयन्ती तु तच्छ्रुत्वा भृशं शोकपरायणा। शङ्कमाना नलं तं वै केशिनीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७३-१॥
damayantī tu tacchrutvā bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇā| śaṅkamānā nalaṁ taṁ vai keśinīmidamabravīt ॥03-73-1॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; (proper noun, name of a queen); तु (tu) - but; however; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; greatly; शोकपरायणा (śokaparāyaṇā) - absorbed in grief; given over to sorrow; शङ्कमाना (śaṅkamānā) - suspecting; doubting; नलम् (nalaṁ) - Nala; (proper noun, name of a king); तम् (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; केशिनी (keśinī) - Keśinī; (proper noun, name of a lady-in-waiting); इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke;]
(But Damayantī, having heard that, intensely absorbed in grief, suspecting Nala, indeed to Keśinī this said.)
But Damayantī, deeply absorbed in sorrow after hearing that, suspecting Nala, said this to Keśinī. (03-73-1)
गच्छ केशिनि भूयस्त्वं परीक्षां कुरु बाहुके। आब्रुवाणा समीपस्था चरितान्यस्य लक्षय ॥०३-७३-२॥
gaccha keśini bhūyas tvaṁ parīkṣāṁ kuru bāhuke। ābruvāṇā samīpasthā caritāny asya lakṣaya ॥03-73-2॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; केशिनि (keśini) - O Keśinī; भूयः (bhūyas) - again; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; परीक्षाम् (parīkṣām) - test; कुरु (kuru) - make; बाहुके (bāhuke) - with Bahuka; आब्रुवाणा (ābruvāṇā) - asking; समीपस्था (samīpasthā) - those who are nearby; चरितानि (caritāni) - actions; अस्य (asya) - his; लक्षय (lakṣaya) - observe;]
(Go, O Keśinī, again you make test with Bahuka. Asking those nearby, his actions observe.)
Go, Keśinī, once more test Bahuka. Ask those who are nearby and observe his actions. (03-73-2)
यदा च किञ्चित्कुर्यात्स कारणं तत्र भामिनि। तत्र सञ्चेष्टमानस्य संलक्ष्यं ते विचेष्टितम् ॥०३-७३-३॥
yadā ca kiñcit kuryāt sa kāraṇaṃ tatra bhāmini। tatra sañceṣṭamānasya saṃlakṣyaṃ te viceṣṭitam ॥03-73-3॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - he should do; सः (saḥ) - he; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; तत्र (tatra) - there; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O passionate lady; तत्र (tatra) - there; सञ्चेष्टमानस्य (sañceṣṭamānasya) - of one behaving; सञ्चेष्टमानस्य (sañceṣṭamānasya) - of one acting; संलक्ष्यम् (saṃlakṣyam) - to be noticed; ते (te) - your; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - actions;]
(When and something he should do, he, for a reason, there, O passionate lady, there, of one acting, to be noticed, your actions.)
O passionate lady, when he does something there for a reason, then the actions of one behaving (thus) there, your actions, are to be noticed. (03-73-3)
न चास्य प्रतिबन्धेन देयोऽग्निरपि भामिनि। याचते न जलं देयं सम्यगत्वरमाणया ॥०३-७३-४॥
na cāsya pratibandhena deyo'gnirapi bhāmini। yācate na jalaṃ deyaṃ samyagatvaramāṇayā ॥03-73-4॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - to him; of him; प्रतिबन्धेन (pratibandhena) - with obstruction; by hindrance; देयः (deyaḥ) - should be given; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; अपि (api) - even; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady; याचते (yācate) - he requests; न (na) - not; जलम् (jalam) - water; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; अत्वरमाणया (atvaramāṇayā) - by one not hasty;]
(Not and to him with obstruction should be given fire even, O beautiful lady. To one requesting, not water should be given properly by one not hasty.)
O beautiful lady, fire should not be given to him with obstruction, even for fire itself. When someone requests water, it should not be withheld but properly given by one who is not hasty. (03-73-4)
एतत्सर्वं समीक्ष्य त्वं चरितं मे निवेदय। यच्चान्यदपि पश्येथास्तच्चाख्येयं त्वया मम ॥०३-७३-५॥
etatsarvaṃ samīkṣya tvaṃ caritaṃ me nivedaya। yac cānyad api paśyethās tac cākhyeyaṃ tvayā mama ॥03-73-5॥
[एतत्सर्वं (etatsarvaṃ) - all this; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having examined; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; चरितं (caritaṃ) - the conduct; मे (me) - to me; निवेदय (nivedaya) - you inform; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यद् (anyad) - other also; अपि (api) - also; पश्येथाः (paśyethāḥ) - you might see; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; आख्येयं (ākhyeyaṃ) - must be told; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मम (mama) - to me;]
(All this having examined you the conduct to me inform. Which and other also you might see that and must be told by you to me.)
After examining all this, inform me about the conduct. And whatever else you might see, that too must be told to me by you. (03-73-5)
दमयन्त्यैवमुक्ता सा जगामाथाशु केशिनी। निशाम्य च हयज्ञस्य लिङ्गानि पुनरागमत् ॥०३-७३-६॥
damayantyaivamuktā sā jagāmāthāśu keśinī। niśāmya ca hayajñasya liṅgāni punarāgamat ॥03-73-6॥
[दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - by Damayantī; एवमुक्ता (evamuktā) - thus addressed; सा (sā) - she; जगाम (jagāma) - went; अथ (atha) - then; आशु (āśu) - swiftly; केशिनी (keśinī) - the one with beautiful hair; निशाम्य (niśāmya) - having heard; च (ca) - and; हयज्ञस्य (hayajñasya) - of the horse-sacrifice; लिङ्गानि (liṅgāni) - signs; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आगमत् (āgamat) - came;]
(By Damayantī thus addressed, she then swiftly went, the one with beautiful hair. And, having heard the horse-sacrifice's signs, again came.)
Thus addressed by Damayantī, the lovely-haired woman then swiftly departed. And, having heard the signs of the horse-sacrifice, she returned again. (03-73-6)
सा तत्सर्वं यथावृत्तं दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत्। निमित्तं यत्तदा दृष्टं बाहुके दिव्यमानुषम् ॥०३-७३-७॥
sā tatsarvaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ damayantyai nyavedayat. nimittaṃ yattadā dṛṣṭaṃ bāhuke divyamānuṣam ॥03-73-7॥
[सा (sā) - she; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; यथा-वृत्तं (yathā-vṛttam) - as had occurred; दमयन्त्यै (damayantyai) - to Damayantī; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - communicated; निमित्तं (nimittaṃ) - omen; यत् (yat) - which; तदा (tadā) - at that time; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - was seen; बाहुके (bāhuke) - in Bāhuka; दिव्य-मानुषम् (divya-mānuṣam) - divine and human (nature);]
(She all that as had occurred to Damayantī communicated. The omen which at that time was seen in Bāhuka, divine and human.)
She reported to Damayantī everything exactly as it had happened, including the divine and human omens she had seen at that time in Bāhuka. (03-73-7)

दृढं शुच्युपचारोऽसौ न मया मानुषः क्वचित्। दृष्टपूर्वः श्रुतो वापि दमयन्ति तथाविधः ॥०३-७३-८॥
dṛḍhaṃ śucy-upacāro'sau na mayā mānuṣaḥ kvacit। dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ śruto vāpi damayanti tathāvidhaḥ॥03-73-8॥
[दृढं (dṛḍham) - firmly; शुच्युपचारः (śucy-upacāraḥ) - with pure conduct; असौ (asau) - he; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - a human; क्वचित् (kvacit) - ever; दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - seen before; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; दमयन्ति (damayanti) - O Damayanti; तथाविधः (tathāvidhaḥ) - such as this;]
(Firmly with pure conduct, he, not by me a human ever, seen before or heard even, O Damayanti, such as this.)
O Damayanti, I have never before seen or even heard of any human, such as this one, who is so firmly devoted to pure conduct. (03-73-8)
ह्रस्वमासाद्य सञ्चारं नासौ विनमते क्वचित्। तं तु दृष्ट्वा यथासङ्गमुत्सर्पति यथासुखम् ॥ सङ्कटेऽप्यस्य सुमहद्विवरं जायतेऽधिकम् ॥०३-७३-९॥
hrasvam āsādya sañcāraṃ nāsau vinamate kvacit। taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā yathā-saṅgam utsarpati yathā-sukham ॥ saṅkaṭe'py asya sumahad vivaraṃ jāyate'dhikam ॥03-73-9॥
[ह्रस्वम् (hrasvam) - short; (of narrow space); आसाद्य (āsādya) - having attained; having approached; सञ्चारं (sañcāraṃ) - movement; passage; न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; that (object referred earlier); विनमते (vinamate) - bends; stoops; क्वचित् (kvacit) - ever; at any place; तं (taṃ) - him; that; तु (tu) - indeed; but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यथा-सङ्गम् (yathā-saṅgam) - as per association; as it fits; उत्सर्पति (utsarpati) - creeps up; moves ahead; यथा-सुखम् (yathā-sukham) - as per comfort; as convenient; सङ्कटे (saṅkaṭe) - in difficulty; in a narrow place; अपि (api) - even; अस्य (asya) - of him; of it; सुमहद् (sumahad) - very great; extremely large; विवरं (vivaraṃ) - opening; gap; जायते (jāyate) - arises; is produced; अधिकम् (adhikam) - more; abundant;]
(Having attained a short passage, he does not bend anywhere. But having seen him, as per association, moves ahead as per convenience. Even in difficulty, for him, a very great opening is produced more.)
Having reached a narrow passage, he never bends anywhere; but seeing it, proceeds forward according to what fits and as is comfortable. Even in a tight place, for him, a very large opening arises more. (03-73-9)
ऋतुपर्णस्य चार्थाय भोजनीयमनेकशः। प्रेषितं तत्र राज्ञा च मांसं सुबहु पाशवम् ॥०३-७३-१०॥
ṛtuparṇasya cārthāya bhojanīyam anekaśaḥ। preṣitaṃ tatra rājñā ca māṃsaṃ subahu pāśavam ॥03-73-10॥
[ऋतुपर्णस्य (ṛtuparṇasya) - of Ṛtuparṇa; च (ca) - and; अर्थाय (arthāya) - for the purpose; भोजनीयम् (bhojanīyam) - edible food; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - many times; प्रेषितं (preṣitam) - was sent; तत्र (tatra) - there; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; च (ca) - and; मांसं (māṃsam) - meat; सुबहु (subahu) - very much; पाशवम् (pāśavam) - of animals;]
(For Ṛtuparṇa and for the purpose, edible food many times, was sent there by the king and very much animal meat.)
For Ṛtuparṇa's purpose, the king sent there a great quantity of edible food and a large amount of animal meat. (03-73-10)
तस्य प्रक्षालनार्थाय कुम्भस्तत्रोपकल्पितः। स तेनावेक्षितः कुम्भः पूर्ण एवाभवत्तदा ॥०३-७३-११॥
tasya prakṣālanārthāya kumbhas tatropakalpitaḥ। sa tenāvekṣitaḥ kumbhaḥ pūrṇa evābhavat tadā॥03-73-11॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रक्षालनार्थाय (prakṣālanārthāya) - for the purpose of washing; कुम्भः (kumbhaḥ) - pitcher; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपकल्पितः (upakalpitaḥ) - was prepared; सः (saḥ) - that; तेन (tena) - by him; अवेक्षितः (avekṣitaḥ) - was looked at; कुम्भः (kumbhaḥ) - pitcher; पूर्णः (pūrṇaḥ) - full; एव (eva) - indeed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Of him for the purpose of washing, a pitcher there was prepared. That by him looked at, the pitcher full indeed became then.)
For his washing, a pitcher was prepared there. When he looked at it, the pitcher immediately became full at that time. (03-73-11)
ततः प्रक्षालनं कृत्वा समधिश्रित्य बाहुकः। तृणमुष्टिं समादाय आविध्यैनं समादधत् ॥०३-७३-१२॥
tataḥ prakṣālanaṃ kṛtvā samadhiśritya bāhukaḥ। tṛṇamuṣṭiṃ samādāya āvidhya enaṃ samādadhat ॥03-73-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; प्रक्षालनं (prakṣālanam) - washing; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; समधिश्रित्य (samadhiśritya) - having approached closely; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; तृणमुष्टिं (tṛṇamuṣṭim) - fistful of grass; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; आविध्य (āvidhya) - having swung; एनं (enaṃ) - to him; समादधत् (samādadhat) - applied;]
(Thereafter, having washed, having approached closely, Bāhuka, having taken a fistful of grass, having swung it, applied it to him.)
Afterwards, having cleansed himself, Bāhuka approached, took a fistful of grass, swung it, and applied it to him. (03-73-12)
अथ प्रज्वलितस्तत्र सहसा हव्यवाहनः। तदद्भुततमं दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताहमिहागता ॥०३-७३-१३॥
atha prajvalitastatra sahasā havyavāhanaḥ। tadadbhutatamaṃ dṛṣṭvā vismitāhamihāgatā ॥03-73-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; प्रज्वलितः (prajvalitaḥ) - blazed up; तत्र (tatra) - there; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; हव्यवाहनः (havyavāhanaḥ) - the fire (Agni); तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुततमम् (adbhutatamam) - most wonderful; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विस्मिता (vismitā) - astonished; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगता (āgatā) - have come;]
(Then blazed up there suddenly the fire; that most wonderful having seen, astonished I here have come.)
Then the fire suddenly blazed up there; having seen that most wonderful thing, I have come here astonished. (03-73-13)
अन्यच्च तस्मिन्सुमहदाश्चर्यं लक्षितं मया। यदग्निमपि संस्पृश्य नैव दह्यत्यसौ शुभे ॥०३-७३-१४॥
anyacca tasmin sumahad-āścaryaṁ lakṣitaṁ mayā। yad agnim api saṁspṛśya naiva dahyaty asau śubhe॥03-73-14॥
[अन्यच्च (anyacca) - and furthermore; also; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; in him; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṁ) - marvel; wonder; लक्षितं (lakṣitaṁ) - observed; seen; मया (mayā) - by me; यत् (yat) - that; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; अपि (api) - even; also; संस्पृश्य (saṁspṛśya) - having touched; नैव (naiva) - not at all; दह्यति (dahyati) - (he) burns; असौ (asau) - he; that one; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; O fair lady;]
(And furthermore, in that (being) a very great marvel was observed by me: that, even having touched fire, not at all does he burn, O fair lady.)
And, O fair lady, I observed yet another very great marvel in him: namely, that even when he touches fire, he does not burn. (03-73-14)
छन्देन चोदकं तस्य वहत्यावर्जितं द्रुतम्। अतीव चान्यत्सुमहदाश्चर्यं दृष्टवत्यहम् ॥०३-७३-१५॥
chandena chodakaṃ tasya vahaty āvarjitaṃ drutam. atīva cānyat sumahad āścaryaṃ dṛṣṭavatya ham ॥03-73-15॥
[छन्देन (chandena) - at will; by its own wish; चोदकं (chodakaṃ) - driver; तस्य (tasya) - of it; his; वहति (vahati) - carries; moves; आवर्जितं (āvarjitaṃ) - turned; directed; द्रुतम् (drutam) - swiftly; अतीव (atīva) - extremely; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṃ) - wonder; marvel; दृष्टवत्यहम् (dṛṣṭavatī aham) - I have seen;]
(At will, the driver of it carries, turned, swiftly. Extremely and another very great wonder I have seen.)
The driver moves it at will, turning it swiftly. And I have seen another extremely great wonder. (03-73-15)
यत्स पुष्पाण्युपादाय हस्ताभ्यां ममृदे शनैः। मृद्यमानानि पाणिभ्यां तेन पुष्पाणि तान्यथ ॥०३-७३-१६॥
yat sa puṣpāṇy upādāya hastābhyāṃ mamṛde śanaiḥ। mṛdyamānāni pāṇibhyāṃ tena puṣpāṇi tāny atha ॥03-73-16॥
[यत्स (yat sa) - that which; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; हस्ताभ्यां (hastābhyāṃ) - with (two) hands; ममृदे (mamṛde) - softened; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gently; मृद्यमानानि (mṛdyamānāni) - being softened; पाणिभ्यां (pāṇibhyāṃ) - by (two) hands; तेन (tena) - by him; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; तानि (tāni) - those; अथ (atha) - then;]
(That which flowers, having taken, with hands he softened gently. Being softened by hands, by him the flowers those then.)
He gently took those flowers in his hands and softened them. Those flowers, being softened by his hands, (he used) then. (03-73-16)
भूय एव सुगन्धीनि हृषितानि भवन्ति च। एतान्यद्भुतकल्पानि दृष्ट्वाहं द्रुतमागता ॥०३-७३-१७॥
bhūya eva sugandhīni hṛṣitāni bhavanti ca। etāny adbhutakalpāni dṛṣṭvāahaṃ drutam āgatā॥03-73-17॥
[भूय (bhūya) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; सुगन्धीनि (sugandhīni) - fragrant ones; हृषितानि (hṛṣitāni) - gladdened; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; च (ca) - and; एतानि (etāni) - these; अद्भुतकल्पानि (adbhutakalpāni) - marvel-like; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अहम् (aham) - I; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; आगता (āgatā) - came;]
(Again indeed the fragrant, gladdened (things) become and; these marvel-like (ones) having seen I quickly came.)
Again, indeed, fragrant and delightful things have appeared; having seen these marvelous forms, I came here quickly. (03-73-17)

Bṛhadaśva said.
दमयन्ती तु तच्छ्रुत्वा पुण्यश्लोकस्य चेष्टितम्। अमन्यत नलं प्राप्तं कर्मचेष्टाभिसूचितम् ॥०३-७३-१८॥
damayantī tu tac chṛutvā puṇyaślokasya ceṣṭitam। amanyata nalaṃ prāptaṃ karmaceṣṭābhisūcitam॥03-73-18॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; (proper noun); तु (tu) - but; indeed; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of the virtuous-famed one; चेष्टितम् (ceṣṭitam) - action; conduct; अमन्यत (amanyata) - considered; thought; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; (proper noun); प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - arrived; come; कर्मचेष्टा (karma-ceṣṭā) - actions and movements; अभिसूचितम् (abhisūcitam) - indicated; suggested;]
(Damayanti but that having heard of the virtuous-famed one's action, considered Nala arrived, actions and movements indicated.)
But Damayanti, having heard of the virtuous-famed one's actions, thought that Nala had come, as it was indicated by the manner of actions. (03-73-18)
सा शङ्कमाना भर्तारं नलं बाहुकरूपिणम्। केशिनीं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा रुदती पुनरब्रवीत् ॥०३-७३-१९॥
sā śaṅkamānā bhartāraṃ nalaṃ bāhukarūpiṇam। keśinīṃ ślakṣṇayā vācā rudatī punarabravīt॥03-73-19॥
[सा (sā) - she; शङ्कमाना (śaṅkamānā) - doubting; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; बाहुकरूपिणम् (bāhukarūpiṇam) - assuming the form of the arm; केशिनीम् (keśinīm) - Keshini (herself, the one of lustrous hair); श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - with gentle; वाचा (vācā) - speech; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she said;]
(She, doubting her husband Nala who had assumed the form of an arm, to Keshini, with gentle speech, weeping, again said:)
She, suspecting her husband Nala who had taken the form of an arm, spoke again to Keshini with gentle words, weeping. (03-73-19)
पुनर्गच्छ प्रमत्तस्य बाहुकस्योपसंस्कृतम्। महानसाच्छृतं मांसं समादायैहि भामिनि ॥०३-७३-२०॥
punargaccha pramattasya bāhukasya upasaṃskṛtam। mahānasāt chṛtam māṃsaṃ samādāya ihi bhāmini॥03-73-20॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; प्रमत्तस्य (pramattasya) - of the inattentive; बाहुकस्य (bāhukasya) - of Bāhuka; उपसंस्कृतम् (upasaṃskṛtam) - prepared; महानसात् (mahānasāt) - from the kitchen; छृतम् (chṛtam) - cooked; मांसम् (māṃsam) - meat; समादाय (samādāya) - having taken; इहि (ihi) - come; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady;]
(Again go, of the inattentive Bāhuka, prepared, from the kitchen, cooked meat, having taken, come, O beautiful lady.)
O beautiful lady, go again and take the cooked meat prepared by inattentive Bāhuka from the kitchen and come. (03-73-20)
सा गत्वा बाहुके व्यग्रे तन्मांसमपकृष्य च। अत्युष्णमेव त्वरिता तत्क्षणं प्रियकारिणी ॥ दमयन्त्यै ततः प्रादात्केशिनी कुरुनन्दन ॥०३-७३-२१॥
sā gatvā bāhuke vyagre tan-māṁsam apakṛṣya ca। aty-uṣṇam eva tvaritā tat-kṣaṇaṁ priyakāriṇī॥ damayantyai tataḥ prādāt keśinī kuru-nandana॥03-73-21॥

सोचिता नलसिद्धस्य मांसस्य बहुशः पुरा। प्राश्य मत्वा नलं सूदं प्राक्रोशद्भृशदुःखिता ॥०३-७३-२२॥
socitā nalasiddhasya māṃsasya bahuśaḥ purā। prāśya matvā nalaṃ sūdaṃ prākrośadbhṛśaduḥkhitā ॥03-73-22॥
[सोचिता (socitā) - lamented; नलसिद्धस्य (nalasiddhasya) - of Nala-prepared; मांसस्य (māṃsasya) - of meat; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - frequently; पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्राश्य (prāśya) - having eaten; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; सूदं (sūdaṃ) - cook; प्राक्रोशत् (prākrośat) - she cried aloud; भृशदुःखिता (bhṛśaduḥkhitā) - being greatly distressed;]
(She lamented for the Nala-prepared meat frequently, formerly; having eaten, thinking Nala the cook, she cried aloud being greatly distressed.)
Formerly, having often eaten meat prepared by Nala and recalling Nala as the cook, she lamented and, greatly distressed, cried out loudly. (03-73-22)
वैक्लव्यं च परं गत्वा प्रक्षाल्य च मुखं ततः। मिथुनं प्रेषयामास केशिन्या सह भारत ॥०३-७३-२३॥
vaiklavyam ca paraṃ gatvā prakṣālya ca mukhaṃ tataḥ. mithunaṃ preṣayāmāsa keśinyā saha bhārata॥03-73-23॥

(Mental confusion and extreme having gone to, having washed and mouth then, the pair he sent with Keśinī along with, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, then, having come out of deep confusion and having washed his mouth, he sent the pair along with Keśinī.
इन्द्रसेनां सह भ्रात्रा समभिज्ञाय बाहुकः। अभिद्रुत्य ततो राजा परिष्वज्याङ्कमानयत् ॥०३-७३-२४॥
indrasenāṃ saha bhrātrā samabhijñāya bāhukaḥ। abhidrutya tato rājā pariṣvajyāṅkamānayat ॥03-73-24॥
[इन्द्रसेनां (indrasenāṃ) - Indrasena; (the person Indrasena; सह (saha) - together with; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - with brother; समभिज्ञाय (samabhijñāya) - having recognized; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having run towards; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - embracing; अङ्कम् (aṅkam) - upon the lap; आनयत् (ānayat) - caused to bring;]
(Bāhuka, having recognized Indrasena together with her brother, having quickly approached, then the king, embracing, caused (them) to be brought onto his lap.)
When Bāhuka recognized Indrasena along with her brother, he came running; then the king embraced them and brought them onto his lap. (03-73-24)
बाहुकस्तु समासाद्य सुतौ सुरसुतोपमौ। भृशं दुःखपरीतात्मा सस्वरं प्ररुदोद ह ॥०३-७३-२५॥
bāhukastu samāsādya sutau surasutopamau। bhṛśaṃ duḥkhaparītātmā sasvaraṃ prarudoda ha ॥03-73-25॥
[बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; (proper noun, name); तु (tu) - but; however; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having come near; सुतौ (sutau) - the two sons; (dual) सुरसुतोपमौ (surasutopamau) - like the sons of gods; (simile) भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; intensely; दुःखपरीतात्मा (duḥkhaparītātmā) - one whose mind is overcome by sorrow; सस्वरम् (sasvaram) - aloud; with a sound; प्ररुदोद् (prarudod) - wept; cried aloud; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(Bāhuka but, having approached the two sons like the sons of gods, intensely, with a mind overcome by sorrow, aloud, wept indeed.)
But Bāhuka, having come near his two sons, who were like sons of the gods, being overwhelmed with sorrow, cried aloud.
नैषधो दर्शयित्वा तु विकारमसकृत्तदा। उत्सृज्य सहसा पुत्रौ केशिनीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७३-२६॥
naiṣadho darśayitvā tu vikāramasakṛttadā। utsṛjya sahasā putrau keśinīmidamabravīt ॥03-73-26॥
[नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the prince of Niṣadha;— दर्शयित्वा (darśayitvā) - having shown;— तु (tu) - but;— विकारम् (vikāram) - emotion;— असकृत् (asakṛt) - again and again;— तदा (tadā) - then;— उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned;— सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly;— पुत्रौ (putrau) - the two sons;— केशिनीम् (keśinīm) - to Keśinī;— इदम् (idam) - this;— अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;—;]
(Naiṣadha, having shown emotion again and again then, but having suddenly abandoned the two sons, said this to Keśinī.)
Then the prince of Niṣadha, repeatedly displaying emotion, suddenly let go of his two sons and spoke this to Keśinī. (03-73-26)
इदं सुसदृशं भद्रे मिथुनं मम पुत्रयोः। ततो दृष्ट्वैव सहसा बाष्पमुत्सृष्टवानहम् ॥०३-७३-२७॥
idaṃ susadṛśaṃ bhadre mithunaṃ mama putrayoḥ। tato dṛṣṭvaiva sahasā bāṣpam utsṛṣṭavān aham॥03-73-27॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; सुसदृशं (susadṛśaṃ) - very similar; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; मिथुनं (mithunaṃ) - pair; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रयोः (putrayoḥ) - of the two sons; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; उत्सृष्टवान् (utsṛṣṭavān) - I released; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(This very similar, O auspicious one, pair to my sons; thereafter, having seen indeed, suddenly, tears I released, I.)
O auspicious one, this pair is very similar to my sons; therefore, on seeing them, I suddenly shed tears. (03-73-27)
बहुशः सम्पतन्तीं त्वां जनः शङ्केत दोषतः। वयं च देशातिथयो गच्छ भद्रे नमोऽस्तु ते ॥०३-७३-२८॥
bahuśaḥ sampatantīṁ tvāṁ janaḥ śaṅketa doṣataḥ। vayaṁ ca deśātithayo gaccha bhadre namo'stu te॥03-73-28॥
[बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; often; repeatedly; सम्पतन्तीं (sampatantīm) - approaching; falling upon; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; जनः (janaḥ) - people; persons; शङ्केत (śaṅketa) - may suspect; may doubt; दोषतः (doṣataḥ) - as blameworthy; as a fault; वयम् (vayam) - we; च (ca) - and; देशातिथयः (deśātithayaḥ) - guests from another country; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; O noble lady; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; reverence; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; be; ते (te) - to you;]
(Often, people may suspect you, the one approaching, as blameworthy. And we, guests from another land, go, O noble lady. Salutations be to you.)
