Bṛhadaśva said.
सर्वं विकारं दृष्ट्वा तु पुण्यश्लोकस्य धीमतः। आगत्य केशिनी क्षिप्रं दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-७४-१॥
sarvaṃ vikāraṃ dṛṣṭvā tu puṇyaślokasya dhīmataḥ। āgatya keśinī kṣipraṃ damayantyai nyavedayat॥03-74-1॥
[सर्वं (sarvam) - all; विकारं (vikāram) - change; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; पुण्यश्लोकस्य (puṇyaślokasya) - of the virtuous one; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; आगत्य (āgatya) - having come; केशिनी (keśinī) - Keśinī; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; दमयन्त्यै (damayantyai) - to Damayantī; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - she reported;]
(All change having seen but of the virtuous wise one, having come, Keśinī quickly to Damayantī she reported.)
Keśinī, after observing all the changes in the wise and virtuous one, quickly came and reported them to Damayantī. (03-74-1)
दमयन्ती ततो भूयः प्रेषयामास केशिनीम्। मातुः सकाशं दुःखार्ता नलशङ्कासमुत्सुका ॥०३-७४-२॥
damayantī tato bhūyaḥ preṣayāmāsa keśinīm। mātuḥ sakāśaṃ duḥkhārtā nalaśaṅkāsumutsukā ॥03-74-2॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī (proper name); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - (she) sent; केशिनीम् (keśinīm) - Keśinī (proper name, a female attendant); मातुः (mātuḥ) - to (her) mother; सकाशम् (sakāśam) - to the presence (of); दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - overwhelmed by suffering; नलशङ्का (nalaśaṅkā) - anxiety/doubt concerning Nala; समुुत्सुका (sumutsukā) - intensely eager;]
(Damayantī then again sent Keśinī to her mother's presence, overwhelmed by suffering and intensely eager with anxiety about Nala.)
Damayantī, tormented by grief and anxiously longing due to concern for Nala, once again sent Keśinī to her mother. (03-74-2)
परीक्षितो मे बहुशो बाहुको नलशङ्कया। रूपे मे संशयस्त्वेकः स्वयमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥०३-७४-३॥
parīkṣito me bahuśo bāhuko nalaśaṅkayā। rūpe me saṁśayastvekaḥ svayam icchāmi veditum ॥03-74-3॥
[परीक्षितः (parīkṣitaḥ) - tested; मे (me) - by me; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; नलशङ्कया (nalaśaṅkayā) - with the suspicion of (being) Nala; रूपे (rūpe) - in form; मे (me) - by me; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; त्व्-एकः (tv-ekaḥ) - but one; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Bāhuka has been tested by me many times with the suspicion of (being) Nala; in form, by me, but one doubt (remains). Myself, I wish to know.)
I have tested Bāhuka many times, suspecting him to be Nala; but regarding his appearance, I have only one doubt left, which I wish to resolve myself. (03-74-3)
स वा प्रवेश्यतां मातर्मां वानुज्ञातुमर्हसि। विदितं वाथ वाज्ञातं पितुर्मे संविधीयताम् ॥०३-७४-४॥
sa vā praveśyatāṃ mātar māṃ vā'nujñātum arhasi। viditaṃ vātha vā jñātaṃ pitur me saṃvidhīyatām॥03-74-4॥
[स (sa) - he; वा (vā) - or; प्रवेश्यताम् (praveśyatām) - may be permitted to enter; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; माम् (mām) - me; वा (vā) - or; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to grant permission; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; विदितम् (viditam) - known; वा (vā) - or; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; ज्ञातम् (jñātam) - understood; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; मे (me) - my; संविधीयताम् (saṃvidhīyatām) - may be arranged;]
(He or let be permitted to enter, O mother, me or to grant permission you ought. Known or or or understood of father my may be arranged.)
O mother, either let him be allowed to enter or grant permission to me. Whether it is known or understood by my father, let it be arranged accordingly. (03-74-4)
एवमुक्ता तु वैदर्भ्या सा देवी भीममब्रवीत्। दुहितुस्तमभिप्रायमन्वजानाच्च पार्थिवः ॥०३-७४-५॥
evam-uktā tu vaidarbhyā sā devī bhīmam-abravīt। duhitus-tam-abhiprāyam-anvajānācca pārthivaḥ ॥03-74-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - having been addressed; तु (tu) - but; वैदर्भ्या (vaidarbhyā) - by the princess of Vidarbha; सा (sā) - she; देवी (devī) - the noble lady; भीमम् (bhīmam) - to Bhīma; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; तम् (tam) - that; अभिप्रायम् (abhiprāyam) - intention; अन्वजानात् (anvajānāt) - he understood; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(Thus having been addressed, but by the princess of Vidarbha, she, the noble lady, said to Bhīma. The king also understood that intention of the daughter.)
Having thus been addressed by the princess of Vidarbha, the noble lady spoke to Bhīma. The king understood his daughter's intention as well. (03-74-5)
सा वै पित्राभ्यनुज्ञाता मात्रा च भरतर्षभ। नलं प्रवेशयामास यत्र तस्याः प्रतिश्रयः ॥०३-७४-६॥
sā vai pitrābhyanujñātā mātrā ca bharatarṣabha। nalaṃ praveśayāmāsa yatra tasyāḥ pratiśrayaḥ ॥03-74-6॥
[सा (sā) - she; वै (vai) - indeed; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (her) father; अभ्यनुज्ञाता (abhyanujñātā) - having been permitted; मात्रा (mātrā) - by (her) mother; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; प्रवेशयामास (praveśayāmāsa) - caused to enter; यत्र (yatra) - where; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; प्रतिश्रयः (pratiśrayaḥ) - abode;]
(She indeed, having been permitted by (her) father and by (her) mother, O bull among the Bharatas, caused Nala to enter where her abode (was).)
O bull among the Bharatas, having obtained permission from her father and mother, she caused Nala to enter the place where her abode was. (03-74-6)
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथायुक्तं दमयन्ती नलं तदा। तीव्रशोकसमाविष्टा बभूव वरवर्णिनी ॥०३-७४-७॥
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā tathā-yuktaṃ damayantī nalaṃ tadā। tīvra-śoka-samāviṣṭā babhūva vara-varṇinī ॥03-74-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - so; in that manner; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - endowed; furnished; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; नलं (nalaṃ) - Nala; तदा (tadā) - then; तीव्रशोकसमाविष्टा (tīvra-śoka-samāviṣṭā) - overcome by intense sorrow; बभूव (babhūva) - became; वरवर्णिनी (vara-varṇinī) - the beautiful-complexioned lady;]
(But Damayantī, having seen him, Nala, so endowed then, became overcome by intense sorrow, the beautiful-complexioned lady.)
But when Damayantī saw Nala in that condition, the beautiful-complexioned lady was overcome by intense sorrow. (03-74-7)
ततः काषायवसना जटिला मलपङ्किनी। दमयन्ती महाराज बाहुकं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७४-८॥
tataḥ kāṣāyavasanā jaṭilā malapaṅkinī। damayantī mahārāja bāhukaṃ vākyam abravīt ॥03-74-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; काषायवसना (kāṣāyavasanā) - wearing ochre robes; जटिला (jaṭilā) - with matted hair; मलपङ्किनी (malapaṅkinī) - clad in dirt (stained with filth); दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayantī; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; बाहुकं (bāhukaṃ) - to Bāhuka; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then kāṣāya-robed, matted-haired, filth-clad Damayantī, O great king, to Bāhuka words said.)
Then Damayantī, wearing ochre robes, with matted hair and covered in dirt, O great king, spoke words to Bāhuka. (03-74-8)
दृष्टपूर्वस्त्वया कश्चिद्धर्मज्ञो नाम बाहुक। सुप्तामुत्सृज्य विपिने गतो यः पुरुषः स्त्रियम् ॥०३-७४-९॥
dṛṣṭapūrvastvayā kaścid dharmajño nāma bāhuka। suptām utsṛjya vipine gato yaḥ puruṣaḥ striyam ॥03-74-9॥
[दृष्टः पूर्वः (dṛṣṭaḥ pūrvaḥ) - seen before; previously; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; नाम (nāma) - named; बाहुकः (bāhukaḥ) - Bāhuka; सुप्ताम् (suptām) - sleeping (accusative feminine singular); उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; विपिने (vipine) - in the forest; गतः (gataḥ) - went; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman (accusative singular);]
(Seen before by you was someone named Bāhuka, a knower of dharma; having abandoned a sleeping woman in the forest, that man went.)
Previously, you saw a man named Bāhuka, who knew dharma; he abandoned a sleeping woman in the forest and left. (03-74-9)
अनागसं प्रियां भार्यां विजने श्रममोहिताम्। अपहाय तु को गच्छेत्पुण्यश्लोकमृते नलम् ॥०३-७४-१०॥
anāgasaṃ priyāṃ bhāryāṃ vijane śramamohitām। apahāya tu ko gacchet puṇyaślokamṛte nalam ॥03-74-10॥
[अनागसं (anāgasam) - blameless; (one who is) without fault; प्रियां (priyām) - beloved; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; विजने (vijane) - in a lonely place; श्रममोहिताम् (śramamohitām) - fatigued (and) bewildered; अपहाय (apahāya) - having abandoned; तु (tu) - but; को (ko) - who; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; पुण्यश्लोकमृते (puṇyaślokamṛte) - except the celebrated (in righteous fame); नलम् (nalam) - Nala;]
(Blameless beloved wife in a lonely place, fatigued and bewildered, having abandoned, but who would go, except the celebrated Nala?)
Who would abandon his blameless beloved wife, fatigued and bewildered, in a lonely place, except the celebrated Nala? (03-74-10)
किं नु तस्य मया कार्यमपराद्धं महीपतेः। यो मामुत्सृज्य विपिने गतवान्निद्रया हृताम् ॥०३-७४-११॥
kiṁ nu tasya mayā kāryam aparāddhaṁ mahīpateḥ। yo mām utsṛjya vipine gatavān nidrayā hṛtām॥03-74-11॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यम् (kāryam) - duty; अपराद्धम् (aparāddham) - offense; महीपतेः (mahīpateḥ) - of the lord of the earth; यः (yaḥ) - who; माम् (mām) - me; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; विपिने (vipine) - in the forest; गतवान् (gatavān) - has gone; निद्रया (nidrayā) - by sleep; हृताम् (hṛtām) - taken away; ॥०३-७४-११॥ (॥03-74-11॥) -;]
(What indeed of him by me duty offense of the lord of the earth? Who me having abandoned in the forest has gone, by sleep taken away.)
What offense or duty, indeed, have I committed against the lord of the earth? He who has gone, having abandoned me, who was taken away by sleep, in the forest. (03-74-11)
साक्षाद्देवानपाहाय वृतो यः स मया पुरा। अनुव्रतां साभिकामां पुत्रिणीं त्यक्तवान्कथम् ॥०३-७४-१२॥
sākṣāddēvān apāhāya vṛto yaḥ sa mayā purā। anuvratāṃ sābhikāmāṃ putriṇīṃ tyaktavān katham ॥03-74-12॥
[साक्षात् (sākṣāt) (sākṣāt) - directly; देवान् (devān) (devān) - gods; अपाहाय (apāhāya) (apāhāya) - having abandoned; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) (vṛtaḥ) - was chosen; यः (yaḥ) (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) (saḥ) - he; मया (mayā) (mayā) - by me; पुरा (purā) (purā) - formerly; अनुव्रताम् (anuvratām) (anuvratām) - devoted; सा-अभिकामाम् (sābhikāmām) (sābhikāmām) - with desire; पुत्रिणीम् (putriṇīm) (putriṇīm) - having a son; त्यक्तवान् (tyaktavān) (tyaktavān) - abandoned; कथम् (katham) (katham) - how;]
(Directly gods having abandoned, was chosen who, he by me formerly; devoted, with desire, having a son, abandoned, how?)
How could I, who long ago chose him over the very gods, now abandon a devoted and desirous wife who has given me a son? (03-74-12)
अग्नौ पाणिगृहीतां च हंसानां वचने स्थिताम्। भरिष्यामीति सत्यं च प्रतिश्रुत्य क्व तद्गतम् ॥०३-७४-१३॥
agnau pāṇigṛhītāṃ ca haṃsānāṃ vacane sthitām। bhariṣyāmīti satyaṃ ca pratiśrutya kva tadgatam॥03-74-13॥
[अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; पाणिगृहीतां (pāṇigṛhītām) - hand-joined (wife); च (ca) - and; हंसानां (haṃsānām) - of the swans; वचने (vacane) - in the promise; स्थिताम् (sthitām) - abiding; भरिष्यामि (bhariṣyāmi) - I will support; इति (iti) - thus; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; क्व (kva) - where; तत् (tat) - that; गतम् (gatam) - gone;]
(In the fire, hand-joined and abiding by the promise of the swans, having promised "I will support"—truth and all—where has that gone?)
Having taken your hand in the fire and abided by the promise of the swans, after promising truthfully "I will support," where has that promise gone? (03-74-13)
दमयन्त्या ब्रुवन्त्यास्तु सर्वमेतदरिंदम। शोकजं वारि नेत्राभ्यामसुखं प्रास्रवद्बहु ॥०३-७४-१४॥
damayantyā bruvantyās tu sarvam etad ariṃdama। śokajaṃ vāri netrābhyām asukhaṃ prāsravad bahu॥03-74-14॥
[दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - by Damayantī; ब्रुवन्त्याः (bruvantyāḥ) - while speaking; तु (tu) - but; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etad) - this; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of foes; शोकजम् (śokajam) - born of sorrow; वारि (vāri) - water (tears); नेत्राभ्याम् (netrābhyām) - from the eyes; असुखम् (asukham) - unhappy; प्रास्रवत् (prāsravat) - flowed; बहु (bahu) - much;]
(By Damayantī, while speaking but all this, O subduer of foes, sorrow-born water from the eyes, unhappy, flowed much.)
As Damayantī spoke all this, O subduer of foes, much unhappy tear-water, born of sorrow, flowed from her eyes. (03-74-14)
अतीव कृष्णताराभ्यां रक्तान्ताभ्यां जलं तु तत्। परिस्रवन्नलो दृष्ट्वा शोकार्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७४-१५॥
atīva kṛṣṇatārābhyāṃ raktāntābhyāṃ jalaṃ tu tat। parisravan-nalo dṛṣṭvā śokārta idam abravīt ॥03-74-15॥
[अतीव (atīva) - excessively; कृष्णताराभ्यां (kṛṣṇatārābhyām) - with very dark pupils; रक्तान्ताभ्यां (raktāntābhyām) - with bloodshot (red-tinged parts); जलं (jalaṃ) - water; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; परिस्रवन् (parisravan) - weeping (tears flowing); अनलः (analaḥ) - the Fire (god); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शोक-आर्तः (śoka-ārtaḥ) - afflicted by grief; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Excessively, with very dark pupils, with bloodshot (red-tinged parts), water but that, weeping, the Fire (god), having seen, afflicted by grief, this, said.)
Seeing that water dripping from his excessively dark and bloodshot eyes, the Fire god, afflicted by grief, spoke these words. (03-74-15)
मम राज्यं प्रनष्टं यन्नाहं तत्कृतवान्स्वयम्। कलिना तत्कृतं भीरु यच्च त्वामहमत्यजम् ॥०३-७४-१६॥
mama rājyaṃ pranaṣṭaṃ yannāhaṃ tatkṛtavānsvayam। kalanā tatkṛtaṃ bhīru yacca tvāmahamatyajam ॥03-74-16॥
[मम (mama) - my; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्रनष्टं (pranaṣṭam) - destroyed; यत् (yat) - that; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; तत् (tat) - that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - have done; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali (the age/demon of strife); तत् (tat) - that; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; भीरु (bhīru) - O fearful one; यत् (yat) - that; च (ca) - and; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; अत्यजम् (atyajam) - abandoned;]
(My kingdom destroyed that not I that have done myself. By Kali that done, O fearful one, and that you I abandoned.)
My kingdom is destroyed—not by me, I did not do it myself. It was caused by Kali, O fearful one, and it was also that I abandoned you. (03-74-16)
त्वया तु धर्मभृच्छ्रेष्ठे शापेनाभिहतः पुरा। वनस्थया दुःखितया शोचन्त्या मां विवाससम् ॥०३-७४-१७॥
tvayā tu dharmabhṛcchreṣṭhe śāpenābhihataḥ purā। vanasthayā duḥkhitayā śocantyā māṃ vivāsasam॥03-74-17॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तु (tu) - but; धर्मभृच्छ्रेष्ठे (dharmabhṛcchreṣṭhe) - O best among the upholders of dharma; शापेन (śāpena) - by curse; अभिहतः (abhihataḥ) - struck (affected); पुरा (purā) - previously; वनस्थया (vanasthayā) - dwelling in the forest; दुःखितया (duḥkhitayā) - afflicted with grief; शोचन्त्या (śocantyā) - grieving; माम् (mām) - me; विवाससम् (vivāsasam) - in exiled-attire;]
(But by you, O best among upholders of dharma, previously struck by a curse, dwelling in the forest, afflicted with grief, grieving, me, in exiled-attire.)
But, O best among upholders of dharma, formerly I was struck by a curse by you, as I lived in the forest, grieving, distressed, and clothed as an exile. (03-74-17)
स मच्छरीरे त्वच्छापाद्दह्यमानोऽवसत्कलिः। त्वच्छापदग्धः सततं सोऽग्नाविव समाहितः ॥०३-७४-१८॥
sa maccharīre tvacchāpād dahyamāno'vasat kaliḥ। tvacchāpadagdhaḥ satataṃ so'gnāviva samāhitaḥ॥03-74-18॥
[स (sa) - he; मच्छरीरे (maccharīre) - in my body; त्वच्छापात् (tvacchāpāt) - by your curse; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - being burned; अवसत् (avasat) - remained; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali (personified evil era); त्वच्छापदग्धः (tvacchāpadagdhaḥ) - burned by your curse; सततम् (satatam) - always; सः (saḥ) - he; अग्नौ इव (agnau iva) - as in fire; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - absorbed;]
(He, Kali, in my body, being burned by your curse, remained. Burned by your curse, he always, as in fire, was absorbed.)
Kali, having entered my body, remained there, being burned by your curse. Always burned by your curse, he was absorbed as one is in fire. (03-74-18)
मम च व्यवसायेन तपसा चैव निर्जितः। दुःखस्यान्तेन चानेन भवितव्यं हि नौ शुभे ॥०३-७४-१९॥
mama ca vyavasāyena tapasā caiva nirjitaḥ। duḥkhasyāntena cānena bhavitavyaṃ hi nau śubhe॥03-74-19॥
[मम (mama) - of me; my; च (ca) - and; व्यवसायेन (vyavasāyena) - by effort; determination; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; penance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - overcome; conquered; दुःखस्य (duḥkhasya) - of suffering; of sorrow; अन्तेन (antena) - by the end; by the termination; च (ca) - and; अनेन (anena) - by this; भवितव्यम् (bhavitavyam) - must be; destined to be; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; नौ (nau) - for us two; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; O fortunate lady;]
(By my effort and indeed by (my) penance, (suffering) is overcome; by this end of sorrow, indeed, it must be for us two, O auspicious one.)
Through my determination and penance, suffering has certainly been overcome; by this end of sorrow, O auspicious one, indeed, happiness is destined for both of us. (03-74-19)
विमुच्य मां गतः पापः स ततोऽहमिहागतः। त्वदर्थं विपुलश्रोणि न हि मेऽन्यत्प्रयोजनम्॥०३-७४-२०॥
vimucya māṃ gataḥ pāpaḥ sa tato'ham ihāgataḥ। tvadarthaṃ vipulaśroṇi na hi me'nyat prayojanam॥03-74-20॥
[विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; माम् (mām) - me; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked one; सः (saḥ) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; विपुलश्रोणि (vipulaśroṇi) - O broad-hipped one; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - for me; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose;]
(Having released me, the wicked one went; he then I here have come. For your sake, O broad-hipped one, not indeed for me [is there] other purpose.)
After releasing me, that wicked one left; so I have come here. O broad-hipped lady, I have no other purpose but you. (03-74-20)
कथं नु नारी भर्तारमनुरक्तमनुव्रतम्। उत्सृज्य वरयेदन्यं यथा त्वं भीरु कर्हिचित् ॥०३-७४-२१॥
kathaṁ nu nārī bhartāram-anurakta-manuvratam। utsṛjya varayet anyaṁ yathā tvaṁ bhīru karhicit॥03-74-21॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; नारी (nārī) - woman; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; अनुरक्तम् (anuraktam) - attached; अनुव्रतम् (anuvratam) - devoted; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; वरयेत् (varayet) - would choose; अन्यं (anyaṁ) - another; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; भीरु (bhīru) - timid one; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
(How indeed a woman, attached to and devoted to her husband, having abandoned (him), would choose another, as you, timid one, ever (did).)
How could a woman, devoted and attached to her husband, ever abandon him and choose another, as you, timid one, have done? (03-74-21)
दूताश्चरन्ति पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां नृपतिशासनात्। भैमी किल स्म भर्तारं द्वितीयं वरयिष्यति ॥०३-७४-२२॥
dūtāḥ caranti pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ nṛpati-śāsanāt। bhaimī kila sma bhartāraṃ dvitīyaṃ varayiṣyati॥03-74-22॥
[दूताः (dūtāḥ) - messengers; चरन्ति (caranti) - (they) wander; travel; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - entire; complete; नृपतिशासनात् (nṛpati-śāsanāt) - by the command of the king; भैमी (bhaimī) - Draupadī (daughter of Bhīma); किल (kila) - it is said; indeed; स्म (sma) - indeed; surely; (emphatic particle); भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; द्वितीयं (dvitīyaṃ) - second; वरयिष्यति (varayiṣyati) - will choose;]
(Messengers wander the entire earth by the command of the king. Bhaimī, indeed, surely, the husband, second, will choose.)
Messengers are traversing the entire earth on the king's command. It is said that Bhaimī will choose a second husband. (03-74-22)
स्वैरवृत्ता यथाकाममनुरूपमिवात्मनः। श्रुत्वैव चैवं त्वरितो भाङ्गस्वरिरुपस्थितः ॥०३-७४-२३॥
svairavṛttā yathākāmam anurūpam iva ātmanaḥ। śrutvaiva ca evaṃ tvarito bhāṅgasvarir upasthitaḥ ॥03-74-23॥
[स्वैरवृत्ता (svairavṛttā) - acting of her own accord; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - according to her desire; अनुरूपम् (anurūpam) - suitably; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of herself; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; भाङ्गस्वरि (bhāṅgasvari) - Bhāṅgasvari (proper name); उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - arrived;]
(Acting independently, according to her own desire, just as it suited herself; having indeed heard thus, Bhāṅgasvari quickly arrived.)
Acting on her own, just as she wished and as suited her nature; when she heard this, Bhāṅgasvari quickly came. (03-74-23)
दमयन्ती तु तच्छ्रुत्वा नलस्य परिदेवितम्। प्राञ्जलिर्वेपमाना च भीता वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-७४-२४॥
damayantī tu tac chrutvā nalasya paridevitam। prāñjalir vepamānā ca bhītā vacanam abravīt॥03-74-24॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti;, तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; परिदेवितम् (paridevitam) - lamentation; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; वेपमाना (vepamānā) - trembling; च (ca) - and; भीता (bhītā) - fearful; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Damayanti but that hearing of Nala lamentation, with joined palms trembling and fearful words said.)
But Damayanti, hearing that lamentation of Nala, with joined palms, trembling and fearful, spoke these words. (03-74-24)
