अथ तां व्युषितो रात्रिं नलो राजा स्वलङ्कृतः। वैदर्भ्या सहितः काल्यं ददर्श वसुधाधिपम् ॥०३-७६-१॥
atha tāṃ vyuṣito rātriṃ nalo rājā svalaṅkṛtaḥ। vaidarbhyā sahitaḥ kālyaṃ dadarśa vasudhādhipam॥03-76-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तां (tāṃ) - her; व्यु्षितः (vyuṣitaḥ) - passed (the night); रात्रिं (rātriṃ) - night; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; स्वलङ्कृतः (svalaṅkṛtaḥ) - well-adorned; वैदर्भ्या (vaidarbhyā) - with Vaidarbhi (Damayantī); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together with; काल्यं (kālyaṃ) - in the morning; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; वसुधाधिपम् (vasudhādhipam) - the lord of the earth (king);]
(Then her, having passed the night, Nala the king, well-adorned, with Vaidarbhi together, in the morning saw the lord of the earth.)
Then, after passing the night, King Nala, well-adorned and together with Vaidarbhi (Damayantī), saw the lord of the earth in the morning. (03-76-1)
ततोऽभिवादयामास प्रयतः श्वशुरं नलः। तस्यानु दमयन्ती च ववन्दे पितरं शुभा ॥०३-७६-२॥
tato'bhivādayāmāsa prayataḥ śvaśuraṃ nalaḥ। tasyānu damayantī ca vavande pitaraṃ śubhā ॥03-76-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभिवादयामास (abhivādayāmāsa) - saluted; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - reverent; श्वशुरं (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; तस्य (tasya) - his; अनु (anu) - after; दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; च (ca) - and; ववन्दे (vavande) - reverentially greeted; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious;]
(Then reverent Nala saluted his father-in-law. After him, Damayanti also reverentially greeted her father, the auspicious one.)
Then Nala, reverently, saluted his father-in-law; after him, Damayanti, the auspicious one, bowed to her own father. (03-76-2)
तं भीमः प्रतिजग्राह पुत्रवत्परया मुदा। यथार्हं पूजयित्वा तु समाश्वासयत प्रभुः ॥ नलेन सहितां तत्र दमयन्तीं पतिव्रताम् ॥०३-७६-३॥
taṁ bhīmaḥ pratijagrāha putravat parayā mudā। yathārhaṁ pūjayitvā tu samāśvāsayata prabhuḥ॥ nalena sahitāṁ tatra damayantīṁ pativratām॥03-76-3॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; परया (parayā) - with supreme; मुदा (mudā) - joy; यथार्हं (yathārhaṁ) - as is fit; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; तु (tu) - but; समाश्वासयत् (samāśvāsayat) - consoled; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; नलेन (nalena) - with Nala; सहितां (sahitāṁ) - accompanied; तत्र (tatra) - there; दमयन्तीं (damayantīṁ) - Damayanti; पतिव्रताम् (pativratām) - chaste wife;]
(Him Bhima received like a son with supreme joy. Having honored as is fit but the lord consoled. There Damayanti accompanied by Nala, the chaste wife.)
Bhima received him like a son, with great joy. After honoring him appropriately, the lord consoled Damayanti, the chaste wife, who was there accompanied by Nala. (3-76-3)
तामर्हणां नलो राजा प्रतिगृह्य यथाविधि। परिचर्यां स्वकां तस्मै यथावत्प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥०३-७६-४॥
tāmarhaṇāṁ nalo rājā pratigṛhya yathāvidhi। paricaryāṁ svakāṁ tasmai yathāvatpratyavedayat ॥03-76-4॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अर्हणाम् (arhaṇām) - honors; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; यथा-विधि (yathā-vidhi) - according to rule; परिचर्याम् (paricaryām) - service; स्वकाम् (svakām) - his own; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; यथावत् (yathāvat) - in the proper manner; प्रत्यवेदयत् (pratyavedayat) - made known;]
(Her honors king Nala having received according to rule, his own service to him in the proper manner made known.)
King Nala, having received her honors as prescribed, duly made known to him his own service. (03-76-4)
ततो बभूव नगरे सुमहान्हर्षनिस्वनः। जनस्य सम्प्रहृष्टस्य नलं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम् ॥०३-७६-५॥
tato babhūva nagare sumahān harṣanisvanaḥ। janasya samprahṛṣṭasya nalaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam ॥03-76-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; हर्षनिस्वनः (harṣanisvanaḥ) - joyful sound; जनस्य (janasya) - of the people; सम्प्रहृष्टस्य (samprahṛṣṭasya) - exceedingly delighted; नलम् (nalaṃ) - Nala; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]
(Then arose in the city a very great joyful sound of the people exceedingly delighted, having seen Nala thus arrived.)
Then, in the city, a very great joyful sound arose from the exceedingly delighted people upon seeing Nala arrive in this manner. (03-76-5)
अशोभयच्च नगरं पताकाध्वजमालिनम्। सिक्तसंमृष्टपुष्पाढ्या राजमार्गाः कृतास्तदा ॥०३-७६-६॥
aśobhaya ca nagaraṃ patākā-dhvajamālinam। sikta-saṃmṛṣṭa-puṣpāḍhyā rāja-mārgāḥ kṛtās tadā॥03-76-6॥
[अशोभयत् (aśobhayat) - caused to shine; made resplendent; च (ca) - and; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; पताका-ध्वज-मालिनम् (patākā-dhvajamālinam) - adorned with rows of banners and flags; सिक्त (sikta) - sprinkled; संमृष्ट (saṃmṛṣṭa) - well-cleaned; पुष्पाढ्या (puṣpāḍhyā) - rich with flowers; राजमार्गाः (rāja-mārgāḥ) - royal roads; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - were made; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(And made resplendent the city adorned with rows of banners and flags. At that time the royal roads, sprinkled, well-cleaned, rich with flowers, were prepared.)

द्वारि द्वारि च पौराणां पुष्पभङ्गः प्रकल्पितः। अर्चितानि च सर्वाणि देवतायतनानि च ॥०३-७६-७॥
dvāri dvāri ca paurāṇāṃ puṣpabhaṅgaḥ prakalpitaḥ. arcitāni ca sarvāṇi devatāyatanāni ca ॥03-76-7॥
[द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the door; च (ca) - and; पौराणां (paurāṇām) - of the townspeople; पुष्पभङ्गः (puṣpabhaṅgaḥ) - flower arrangement; प्रकल्पितः (prakalpitaḥ) - was arranged; अर्चितानि (arcitāni) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; देवतायतनानि (devatāyatanāni) - shrines of the deities; च (ca) - and;]

ऋतुपर्णोऽपि शुश्राव बाहुकच्छद्मिनं नलम्। दमयन्त्या समायुक्तं जहृषे च नराधिपः ॥०३-७६-८॥
ṛtuparṇo'pi śuśrāva bāhuka-cchadminaṃ nalam। damayantyā samāyuktaṃ jahṛṣe ca narādhipaḥ ॥03-76-8॥
[ऋतुपर्णः (ṛtuparṇaḥ) - Ṛtuparṇa; (proper noun; name of the king); अपि (api) - also; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - he heard; बाहुकच्छद्मिनं (bāhuka-cchadminam) - disguised as Bāhuka; नलम् (nalam) - Nala; (proper noun; name); दमयन्त्या (damayantyā) - with Damayantī; समायुक्तं (samāyuktam) - joined; जहृषे (jahṛṣe) - rejoiced; (he rejoiced) च (ca) - and; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - the king;]
(Ṛtuparṇa also heard Nala disguised as Bāhuka, joined with Damayantī; and the king rejoiced.)
King Ṛtuparṇa too heard that Nala, disguised as Bāhuka, had been reunited with Damayantī, and the king rejoiced. (03-76-8)
तमानाय्य नलो राजा क्षमयामास पार्थिवम्। स च तं क्षमयामास हेतुभिर्बुद्धिसंमतः ॥०३-७६-९॥
tam ānāyya nalo rājā kṣamayāmāsa pārthivam। sa ca taṃ kṣamayāmāsa hetubhir buddhisaṃmataḥ॥03-76-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आनीय्य (ānāyya) - having brought; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - the king; क्षमयामास (kṣamayāmāsa) - forgave; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; क्षमयामास (kṣamayāmāsa) - forgave; हेतुभिः (hetubhiḥ) - by reasons; बुद्धिसंमतः (buddhisaṃmataḥ) - approved by (his) intellect;]
(Having brought him, King Nala forgave the king. And he forgave him, by reasons approved by (his) intellect.)
After bringing him, King Nala forgave the king. In turn, he also forgave Nala, in accordance with reasons sanctioned by intelligence. (03-76-9)
स सत्कृतो महीपालो नैषधं विस्मयान्वितः। दिष्ट्या समेतो दारैः स्वैर्भवानित्यभ्यनन्दत ॥०३-७६-१०॥
sa satkṛto mahīpālo naiṣadhaṃ vismayānvitaḥ। diṣṭyā sameto dāraiḥ svairbhavānityabhyanandata ॥03-76-10॥
[स (sa) - he; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; नैषधं (naiṣadham) - to Nala (king of Niṣadha); विस्मय-अन्वितः (vismaya-anvitaḥ) - filled with wonder; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; समेतः (sametaḥ) - united; दारैः (dāraiḥ) - with wives; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - his own; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इति (iti) - thus; अभ्यनन्दत (abhyanandata) - rejoiced;]
(He, honored king, to Nala, filled with wonder: 'By fortune (you are) united with (your) own wives, you,' thus, rejoiced.)
The honored king, filled with wonder, rejoiced to Nala, saying, 'By good fortune, you are reunited with your own wives.' (03-76-10)
कच्चित्तु नापराधं ते कृतवानस्मि नैषध। अज्ञातवासं वसतो मद्गृहे निषधाधिप ॥०३-७६-११॥
kaccittu nāparādhaṃ te kṛtavānasmi naiṣadha। ajñātavāsaṃ vasato madgṛhe niṣadhādhipa ॥03-76-11॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - is it (that); तु (tu) - but; indeed; न (na) - not; अपराधं (aparādham) - offense; ते (te) - to you; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - have I done; अस्मि (asmi) - am; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O prince of Niṣadha; अज्ञातवासं (ajñātavāsam) - dwelling in disguise; वसतः (vasataḥ) - dwelling; मद्गृहे (madgṛhe) - in my house; निषधाधिप (niṣadhādhipa) - O lord of the Niṣadhas;]
(Is it but not offense to you have I done, O Naiṣadha? While you dwell in disguise, dwelling in my house, O lord of the Niṣadhas.)
But I hope I have not done any offense to you, O Naiṣadha, while you were dwelling incognito in my house, O lord of the Niṣadhas. (03-76-11)
यदि वा बुद्धिपूर्वाणि यद्यबुद्धानि कानिचित्। मया कृतान्यकार्याणि तानि मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-७६-१२॥
yadi vā buddhi-pūrvāṇi yady abuddhāni kānicit। mayā kṛtāny akāryāṇi tāni me kṣantum arhasi ॥03-76-12॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; बुद्धिपूर्वाणि (buddhi-pūrvāṇi) - done intentionally; यद्यबुद्धानि (yady abuddhāni) - or (if) done unintentionally; कानिचित् (kānicit) - whatever (things); मया (mayā) - by me; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done; अकार्याणि (akāryāṇi) - wrong deeds; तानि (tāni) - those; मे (me) - my; क्षन्तुमर्हसि (kṣantum arhasi) - you ought to forgive;]
(If or intentionally or if unintentionally whatever (things) by me done wrong deeds, those my you ought to forgive.)
If I have done any wrong deeds, whether intentionally or unintentionally, you ought to forgive those of mine. (03-76-12)

न मेऽपराधं कृतवांस्त्वं स्वल्पमपि पार्थिव। कृतेऽपि च न मे कोपः क्षन्तव्यं हि मया तव ॥०३-७६-१३॥
na me'parādhaṁ kṛtavāṁstvaṁ svalpamapi pārthiva। kṛte'pi ca na me kopaḥ kṣantavyaṁ hi mayā tava ॥03-76-13॥
[न (na) - not; मेऽपराधं (me'parādhaṁ) - against me, offence; कृतवांस्त्वं (kṛtavāṁstvaṁ) - you have committed; स्वल्पमपि (svalpamapi) - even a little; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; कृतेऽपि (kṛte'pi) - even if done; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; मे (me) - in me; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; क्षन्तव्यं (kṣantavyaṁ) - is to be forgiven; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; तव (tava) - of you;]
(Not against me, offence you have committed even a little, O king. Even if done and not in me anger; to be forgiven indeed by me of you.)
O king, you have not committed even the slightest offence against me. Even if any were done, I have no anger toward you; indeed, whatever needs to be forgiven by me is forgiven. (03-76-13)
पूर्वं ह्यसि सखा मेऽसि सम्बन्धी च नराधिप। अत ऊर्ध्वं तु भूयस्त्वं प्रीतिमाहर्तुमर्हसि ॥०३-७६-१४॥
pūrvaṃ hy asi sakhā me 'si sambandhī ca narādhipa। ata ūrdhvaṃ tu bhūyas tvaṃ prītim āhartum arhasi ॥03-76-14॥
[पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; सखा (sakhā) - friend; मे (me) - my; असि (asi) - you are; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - henceforth; तु (tu) - but; भूयः (bhūyas) - more; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - affection; आहर्तुम् (āhartum) - to gain; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Formerly indeed you are friend my, you are relative and, O king. Therefore henceforth but more you affection to gain you ought.)
Before, you have indeed been my friend and my relative, O king. But from now on, you ought to win even more of my affection. (03-76-14)
सर्वकामैः सुविहितः सुखमस्म्युषितस्त्वयि। न तथा स्वगृहे राजन्यथा तव गृहे सदा ॥०३-७६-१५॥
sarvakāmaiḥ suvihitaḥ sukham asmy uṣitas tvayi. na tathā svagṛhe rājan yathā tava gṛhe sadā ॥03-76-15॥
[सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; सुविहितः (suvihitaḥ) - well-provided; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having lived; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; स्वगृहे (svagṛhe) - in (my) own house; राजन् (rājan) - O King; यथा (yathā) - as; तव (tava) - your; गृहे (gṛhe) - in (your) house; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(With all desires well-provided, happiness I am having lived with you. Not so in my own house, O King, as always in your house.)
O King, all my desires have been well-fulfilled, and I have lived happily with you; I am not so in my own house as I always am in your house. (03-76-15)
इदं चैव हयज्ञानं त्वदीयं मयि तिष्ठति। तदुपाकर्तुमिच्छामि मन्यसे यदि पार्थिव ॥०३-७६-१६॥
idaṁ caiva hayajñānaṁ tvadīyaṁ mayi tiṣṭhati। tad-upākartum icchāmi manyase yadi pārthiva ॥03-76-16॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; हयज्ञानं (hayajñānam) - knowledge of horses; science of equestrianism; त्वदीयं (tvadīyam) - belonging to you; मयि (mayi) - in me; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; abides; तत् (tat) - that; उपाकर्तुम् (upākartum) - to return (a favour); to repay; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; I desire; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; यदि (yadi) - if; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(This and indeed knowledge of horses belonging to you in me remains. That to return I wish if you think, O king.)
This very knowledge of horses belonging to you abides in me. If you think it proper, O king, I wish to return that favour. (03-76-16)
बृहदश्व उवाच॥

Bṛhadaśva said;
एवमुक्त्वा ददौ विद्यामृतुपर्णाय नैषधः। स च तां प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥०३-७६-१७॥
evam-uktvā dadau vidyām ṛtuparṇāya naiṣadhaḥ। sa ca tām pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā॥ 03-76-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; ऋतुपर्णाय (ṛtuparṇāya) - to Ṛtuparṇa; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the king of Niṣadha (Nala); स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; तां (tām) - that (knowledge); प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - as prescribed by rule; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(Thus having said, the king of Niṣadha (Nala) gave the knowledge to Ṛtuparṇa. He also accepted that (knowledge) by action as prescribed by rule.)
Thus having spoken, the king of Niṣadha (Nala) gave the knowledge to Ṛtuparṇa, and he in turn accepted it through the proper prescribed ritual. (03-76-17)
ततो गृह्याश्वहृदयं तदा भाङ्गस्वरिर्नृपः। सूतमन्यमुपादाय ययौ स्वपुरमेव हि ॥०३-७६-१८॥
tato gṛhyāśvahṛdayaṃ tadā bhāṅgasvarirnṛpaḥ। sūtamanyamupādāya yayau svapurameva hi ॥03-76-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गृह्य (gṛhya) - having taken; अश्व-हृदयं (aśva-hṛdayam) - horse's heart; तदा (tadā) - then; भाङ्गस्वरिः (bhāṅga-svariḥ) - having a broken voice; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; सूतम् (sūtam) - the charioteer; अन्यं (anyam) - another; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; ययौ (yayau) - he went; स्व-पुरम् (sva-puram) - own city; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely;]
(Then having taken the horse's heart, then the king with a broken voice, having taken another charioteer, indeed went to his own city surely (03-76-18))
Then, having taken the horse's heart, the king, whose voice was broken, took another charioteer and surely went to his own city. (03-76-18)
ऋतुपर्णे प्रतिगते नलो राजा विशां पते। नगरे कुण्डिने कालं नातिदीर्घमिवावसत् ॥०३-७६-१९॥
ṛtuparṇe pratigate nalo rājā viśāṃ pate। nagare kuṇḍine kālaṃ nātidīrgham ivāvasat॥03-76-19॥
[ऋतुपर्णे (ṛtuparṇe) - when Ṛtuparṇa (king) (had) gone back; प्रतिगते (pratigate) - having returned; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; राजा (rājā) - the king; विशां (viśām) - of people; पते (pate) - O lord; नगरे (nagare) - in the city; कुण्डिने (kuṇḍine) - Kuṇḍina; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; न (na) - not; अति (ati) - very; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; इव (iva) - as if; अवसत् (avasat) - remained;]
(When Ṛtuparṇa had returned, Nala the king, O lord of people, in the city Kuṇḍina, time not very long as if, remained.)
When Ṛtuparṇa had gone back, King Nala, O lord of the people, stayed in the city of Kuṇḍina for what seemed not a very long time. (03-76-19)
