Bṛhadaśva said.
स मासमुष्य कौन्तेय भीममामन्त्र्य नैषधः। पुरादल्पपरीवारो जगाम निषधान्प्रति ॥०३-७७-१॥
sa māsam uṣya kaunteya bhīmam āmantrya naiṣadhaḥ। purād alpaparīvāraḥ jagāma niṣadhān prati ॥03-77-1॥
[स (sa) - he; मासम् (māsam) - month; उष्य (uṣya) - having spent; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhīma; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having bid farewell; नैषधः (naiṣadhaḥ) - the prince of Niṣadha; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; अल्पपरीवारः (alpaparīvāraḥ) - with few attendants; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; निषधान् (niṣadhān) - towards Niṣadha; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(He month having spent, O son of Kunti, Bhīma having bid farewell, the prince of Niṣadha from the city with few attendants departed towards Niṣadha.)
Having spent a month, O son of Kunti, and having bid farewell to Bhīma, the prince of Niṣadha departed from the city for Niṣadha with a small retinue. (03-77-1)
रथेनैकेन शुभ्रेण दन्तिभिः परिषोडशैः। पञ्चाशद्भिर्हयैश्चैव षट्शतैश्च पदातिभिः ॥०३-७७-२॥
rathenaikena śubhreṇa dantibhiḥ pariṣoḍaśaiḥ. pañcāśadbhir hayaś caiva ṣaṭśataiś ca padātibhiḥ ॥03-77-2॥
[रथेनैकेन (rathenaikena) - with one chariot; शुभ्रेण (śubhreṇa) - with a beautiful (white); दन्तिभिः (dantibhiḥ) - with elephants; परिषोडशैः (pariṣoḍaśaiḥ) - sixteen in number; पञ्चाशद्भिः (pañcāśadbhir) - with fifty; हयैः (hayaḥ) - horses; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; षट्शतैः (ṣaṭśataiḥ) - with six hundred; च (ca) - and; पदातिभिः (padātibhiḥ) - foot-soldiers;]
(With one chariot, with a beautiful (white), with elephants sixteen in number; with fifty horses indeed and with six hundred foot-soldiers;)
With one chariot, sixteen beautiful white elephants, fifty horses, and six hundred foot-soldiers. (03-77-2)
स कम्पयन्निव महीं त्वरमाणो महीपतिः। प्रविवेशातिसंरब्धस्तरसैव महामनाः ॥०३-७७-३॥
sa kampayann iva mahīṁ tvaramāṇo mahīpatiḥ। praviveśātisaṁrabdhas tarasāiva mahāmanāḥ॥03-77-3॥
[स (sa) - he; कम्पयन् (kampayan) - shaking; इव (iva) - as if; महीं (mahīṁ) - the earth; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hurrying; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; अतिसंरब्धः (atisaṁrabdhaḥ) - very enraged; तरसा (tarasā) - with force; एव (eva) - indeed; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded;]
(He, shaking as if the earth, hurrying king, entered, very enraged, with force indeed, great-minded.)
He, the king, greatly enraged and of lofty mind, hurriedly entered as if shaking the earth itself with his force. (03-77-3)
ततः पुष्करमासाद्य वीरसेनसुतो नलः। उवाच दीव्याव पुनर्बहु वित्तं मयार्जितम् ॥०३-७७-४॥
tataḥ puṣkaram āsādya vīrasenasuto nalaḥ। uvāca dīvyāv punar bahu vittaṃ mayārjitam॥03-77-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुष्करम् (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; वीरसेनसुतः (vīrasenasutaḥ) - son of Vīrasena; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; दीव्याव (dīvyāv) - let us play (at dice); पुनः (punar) - again; बहु (bahu) - much; वित्तम् (vittaṃ) - wealth; मया (mayā) - by me; अर्जितम् (arjitam) - acquired;]
(Then, having approached Puṣkara, Nala, son of Vīrasena, spoke: "Let us play at dice again; much wealth has been acquired by me." (03-77-4))
Then Nala, the son of Vīrasena, went to Puṣkara and said, "Let us play dice again; I have acquired much wealth." (03-77-4)
दमयन्ती च यच्चान्यन्मया वसु समर्जितम्। एष वै मम संन्यासस्तव राज्यं तु पुष्कर ॥०३-७७-५॥
damayantī ca yaccānyanmaya vasu samarjitam। eṣa vai mama saṃnyāsastava rājyaṃ tu puṣkara ॥03-77-5॥
[दमयन्ती (damayantī) - Damayanti; (proper noun, name of a lady); च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यन् (anyan) - other; मया (mayā) - by me; वसु (vasu) - wealth; समर्जितम् (samarjitam) - acquired; एष (eṣa) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; संन्यासः (saṃnyāsaḥ) - renunciation; तव (tava) - your; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; तु (tu) - but; पुष्कर (puṣkara) - Pushkara; (proper noun, name of a person);]
(Damayanti and whatever other wealth acquired by me, this indeed is my renunciation; your kingdom but, Pushkara.)
Damayanti and whatever other wealth I have acquired, this indeed is my renunciation; but the kingdom is yours, Pushkara. (03-77-5)
पुनः प्रवर्ततां द्यूतमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः। एकपाणेन भद्रं ते प्राणयोश्च पणावहे ॥०३-७७-६॥
punaḥ pravartatāṁ dyūtam iti me niścitā matiḥ। ekapāṇena bhadraṁ te prāṇayoś ca paṇāvahe ॥03-77-6॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रवर्तताम् (pravartatām) - let be commenced; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - dice-play; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - resolved; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; एकपाणेन (ekapāṇena) - with one stake; भद्रं (bhadraṁ) - good; ते (te) - to you; प्राणयोः (prāṇayoḥ) - of our lives; च (ca) - and; पणावहे (paṇāvahe) - let us make the stake;]
(Again, let dice-play be commenced—thus my resolved mind. With one stake, good to you, and let us make our lives the stake.)
My mind is resolved: "Let dice be played again." With one stake—good for you—let us wager even our very lives. (03-77-6)
जित्वा परस्वमाहृत्य राज्यं वा यदि वा वसु। प्रतिपाणः प्रदातव्यः परं हि धनमुच्यते ॥०३-७७-७॥
jitvā parasvam āhṛtya rājyaṁ vā yadi vā vasu। pratipāṇaḥ pradātavyaḥ paraṁ hi dhanam ucyate॥03-77-7॥
[जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; परस्वम् (parasvam) - another's wealth; आहृत्य (āhṛtya) - having taken away; राज्यम् (rājyaṁ) - kingdom; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; वसु (vasu) - wealth; प्रतिपाणः (pratipāṇaḥ) - compensation; प्रदातव्यः (pradātavyaḥ) - should be given; परम् (param) - others'; हि (hi) - indeed; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Having conquered another's wealth or having taken away a kingdom or wealth, compensation should be given; for another's wealth is indeed called (such).)
If one conquers and takes away another's wealth or kingdom, compensation should be provided; for another's wealth is indeed called so. (03-77-7)
न चेद्वाञ्छसि तद्द्यूतं युद्धद्यूतं प्रवर्तताम्। द्वैरथेनास्तु वै शान्तिस्तव वा मम वा नृप ॥०३-७७-८॥
na ced vāñchasi tad dyūtaṃ yuddhadyūtaṃ pravartatām। dvairathenāstu vai śāntis tava vā mama vā nṛpa ॥03-77-8॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; वाञ्छसि (vāñchasi) - you desire; तत् (tat) - that; द्यूतम् (dyūtam) - game of dice; युद्धद्यूतम् (yuddhadyūtam) - battle casting (i.e., war-gamble); प्रवर्तताम् (pravartatām) - let there be (let proceed/start); द्वैरथेन (dvairathena) - by chariot duel; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; वै (vai) - indeed; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; तव (tava) - of you; वा (vā) - or; मम (mama) - of me; वा (vā) - or; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Not if you desire that game of dice, let the battle-casting proceed. By chariot duel let there indeed be peace, for you or for me, O king.)
If you do not desire that game of dice, let the battle-casting begin. Let there indeed be peace by a chariot duel, either for you or for me, O king. (03-77-8)
वंशभोज्यमिदं राज्यं मार्गितव्यं यथा तथा। येन तेनाप्युपायेन वृद्धानामिति शासनम् ॥०३-७७-९॥
vaṃśabhojyam idaṃ rājyaṃ mārgitavyaṃ yathā tathā। yena tenāpy upāyena vṛddhānām iti śāsanam ॥03-77-9॥
[वंशभोज्यम् (vaṃśabhojyam) - to be enjoyed by lineage; इदं (idaṃ) - this; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; मार्गितव्यम् (mārgitavyam) - should be sought; यथा तथा (yathā tathā) - by any means whatsoever; येन् (yena) - by which; तेन् (tena) - by that; अपि (api) - even; उपायेन (upāyena) - by method; वृद्धानाम् (vṛddhānām) - of the elders; इति (iti) - thus; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command;]
(This kingdom, to be enjoyed by lineage, should be sought by any means whatsoever, by whatever method, even by that, thus is the command of the elders.)
This kingdom, to be enjoyed by the lineage, should be sought by any means whatsoever; by whatever method it is obtained, thus is the command of the elders. (03-77-9)
द्वयोरेकतरे बुद्धिः क्रियतामद्य पुष्कर। कैतवेनाक्षवत्यां वा युद्धे वा नम्यतां धनुः ॥०३-७७-१०॥
dvayorekatare buddhiḥ kriyatām adya puṣkara। kaitavena akṣavatyāṃ vā yuddhe vā namyatāṃ dhanuḥ ॥03-77-10॥
[द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of the two; एकतरे (ekatare) - in either one; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - decision; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be made; अद्य (adya) - today; पुष्कर (puṣkara) - Puṣkara; कैतवेन (kaitavena) - by deceit; अक्षवत्याम् (akṣavatyām) - in dice-play; वा (vā) - or; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; वा (vā) - or; नम्यताम् (namyatām) - let it be bent; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - the bow;]
(Of the two, let a decision be made today, Puṣkara; by deceit in dice-play or, in battle, let the bow be bent.)
Let the decision between the two be made today, Puṣkara: either let it be settled by deceit in dice-play or let the bow be bent in battle. (03-77-10)
नैषधेनैवमुक्तस्तु पुष्करः प्रहसन्निव। ध्रुवमात्मजयं मत्वा प्रत्याह पृथिवीपतिम् ॥०३-७७-११॥
naiṣadhenaivam-uktas tu puṣkaraḥ prahasan niva। dhruvam ātma-jayam matvā pratyāha pṛthivī-patim ॥03-77-11॥
[नैषधेन (naiṣadhena) - by Naiṣadha (Nala); एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; प्रहसन्निव (prahasan-niva) - as if smiling; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; आत्मजयं (ātma-jayam) - one's own victory; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; प्रत्याह (pratyāha) - replied; पृथिवीपतिम् (pṛthivī-patim) - the king (lord of the earth; Nala);]
(By Naiṣadha having thus been addressed, but Puṣkara, as if smiling, having considered his own victory certain, replied to the lord of the earth.)
But when addressed thus by Naiṣadha, Puṣkara, as if smiling and assuming his own victory was certain, replied to the king. (03-77-11)
दिष्ट्या त्वयार्जितं वित्तं प्रतिपाणाय नैषध। दिष्ट्या च दुष्कृतं कर्म दमयन्त्याः क्षयं गतम् ॥ दिष्ट्या च ध्रियसे राजन्सदारोऽरिनिबर्हण ॥०३-७७-१२॥
diṣṭyā tvayārjitaṃ vittaṃ pratipāṇāya naiṣadha. diṣṭyā ca duṣkṛtaṃ karma damayantyāḥ kṣayaṃ gatam. diṣṭyā ca dhriyase rājansadāro'rinibarhaṇa. 03-77-12
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अर्जितं (arjitaṃ) - acquired; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; प्रतिपाणाय (pratipāṇāya) - to regain; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O son of Nala; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; च (ca) - and; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtaṃ) - evil deed; कर्म (karma) - action; दमयन्त्याः (damayantyāḥ) - of Damayantī; क्षयं (kṣayaṃ) - destruction; गतं (gataṃ) - has gone; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; च (ca) - and; ध्रियसे (dhriyase) - you are supported; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - with wife; अरिनिबर्हण (arinibarhaṇa) - destroyer of enemies;]
(By fortune, by you acquired wealth to regain, O son of Nala. By fortune, and evil deed, action of Damayantī, destruction has gone. By fortune, and you are supported, O king, with wife, destroyer of enemies. (03-77-12))
Fortunately, the wealth acquired by you has been recovered, O prince of Nala. And fortunately, the wicked deed affecting Damayantī has come to an end. Also, by fortune, you are now supported, O king, together with your wife, O destroyer of enemies. (03-77-12)
धनेनानेन वैदर्भी जितेन समलङ्कृता। मामुपस्थास्यति व्यक्तं दिवि शक्रमिवाप्सराः ॥०३-७७-१३॥
dhanenānena vaidarbhī jitena samalaṅkṛtā। māmupasthāsyati vyaktaṃ divi śakramivāpsarāḥ ॥03-77-13॥
[धनेनानेन (dhanenānena) - by this wealth; वैदर्भी (vaidarbhī) - Vaidarbhi (Princess of Vidarbha, Sītā); जितेन (jitena) - which is conquered; समलङ्कृता (samalaṅkṛtā) - completely adorned; माम् (mām) - me; उपस्थास्यति (upasthāsyati) - will attend; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; शक्रम् (śakram) - Śakra (the name of Indra); इव (iva) - like; अप्सराः (apsarāḥ) - apsarās (celestial nymphs);]
(By this wealth, Vaidarbhi, which is conquered, completely adorned, will clearly attend to me, like the apsarās attend Śakra in heaven.)
With this wealth, Vaidarbhi, having been won and beautifully adorned, will certainly serve me just as the apsarās serve Indra in heaven. (03-77-13)
नित्यशो हि स्मरामि त्वां प्रतीक्षामि च नैषध। देवने च मम प्रीतिर्न भवत्यसुहृद्गणैः ॥०३-७७-१४॥
nityaśo hi smarāmi tvāṃ pratīkṣāmi ca naiṣadha। devane ca mama prītir na bhavaty asuhṛd-gaṇaiḥ॥03-77-14॥
[नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; always; हि (hi) - indeed; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रतीक्षामि (pratīkṣāmi) - I wait for; च (ca) - and; नैषध (naiṣadha) - O son of Nala; देवने (devane) - in play; during the game; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; न (na) - not; भवति (bhavati) - arises; is; असुहृद्गणैः (asuhṛd-gaṇaiḥ) - with those who are unfriendly groups; with unfriendly persons;]
(Constantly indeed I remember you, I wait for you, O son of Nala; and in play, my affection does not arise with unfriendly persons.)
I always remember you and constantly wait for you, O Naiṣadha. Even during games, I do not feel affection for those who are not my friends. (03-77-14)
जित्वा त्वद्य वरारोहां दमयन्तीमनिन्दिताम्। कृतकृत्यो भविष्यामि सा हि मे नित्यशो हृदि ॥०३-७७-१५॥
jitvā tvadya varārohāṃ damayantīmaninditām। kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyāmi sā hi me nityaśo hṛdi ॥03-77-15॥
[जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; त्वद्यम् (tvadya) - today; वरारोहाम् (varārohām) - of excellent hips; दमयन्तीम् (damayantīm) - Damayantī; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has accomplished his purpose; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; सा (sā) - she; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (my) heart;]
(Having conquered Damayantī of excellent hips, the blameless one, today I shall become one who has accomplished his purpose. She indeed to me always in (my) heart.)
Having won today Damayantī of beautiful hips, who is blameless, I will have accomplished my purpose; for she is indeed always in my heart. (03-77-15)
श्रुत्वा तु तस्य ता वाचो बह्वबद्धप्रलापिनः। इयेष स शिरश्छेत्तुं खड्गेन कुपितो नलः ॥०३-७७-१६॥
śrutvā tu tasya tā vāco bahv-abaddha-pralāpinaḥ। iyeṣa sa śiraś-chedtuṃ khaḍgena kupito nalaḥ ॥03-77-16॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; तस्य (tasya) - his; ता (tā) - those; वाचो (vācaḥ) - words; बह्वबद्धप्रलापिनः (bahv-abaddha-pralāpinaḥ) - of much incoherent prattling; इयेष (iyeṣa) - sought; स (sa) - he; शिरश्छेत्तुं (śiras-chedtuṃ) - to cut off the head; खड्गेन (khaḍgena) - with a sword; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - angry; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala;]
(Having heard but his those words of much incoherent prattling, sought he to cut off the head with a sword, angry, Nala.)
But having heard his many incoherent ramblings, Nala, angered, sought to cut off his head with a sword. (3-77-16)
स्मयंस्तु रोषताम्राक्षस्तमुवाच ततो नृपः। पणावः किं व्याहरसे जित्वा वै व्याहरिष्यसि ॥०३-७७-१७॥
smayaṁstu roṣatāmrākṣastamuvāca tato nṛpaḥ। paṇāvaḥ kiṁ vyāharase jitvā vai vyāhariṣyasi॥03-77-17॥
[स्मयन् (smayan) - smilingly; तु (tu) - but; रोष-ताम्र-अक्षः (roṣa-tāmra-akṣaḥ) - with eyes reddened by anger; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ततः (tataḥ) - then; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; पणावः (paṇāvaḥ) - stakes; किं (kiṁ) - why; व्याहरसे (vyāharase) - are you speaking; जित्वा (jitvā) - having won; वै (vai) - indeed; व्याहरिष्यसि (vyāhariṣyasi) - you will speak;]
(Smilingly but with eyes reddened by anger, then the king spoke to him: "Stakes, why are you speaking? Having won, indeed you will speak." (03-77-17))
But smiling, with his eyes red with anger, the king then said to him: "Why are you boasting about the stakes? You will speak only when you win indeed." (03-77-17)
ततः प्रावर्तत द्यूतं पुष्करस्य नलस्य च। एकपाणेन भद्रं ते नलेन स पराजितः ॥ सरत्नकोशनिचयः प्राणेन पणितोऽपि च ॥०३-७७-१८॥
tataḥ prāvartata dyūtaṃ puṣkarasya nalasya ca। ekapāṇena bhadraṃ te nalena sa parājitaḥ ॥ saratnakośanicayaḥ prāṇena paṇito'pi ca ॥03-77-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रावर्तत (prāvartata) - commenced; द्यूतं (dyūtaṃ) - dice-game; पुष्करस्य (puṣkarasya) - of Puṣkara; नलस्य (nalasya) - of Nala; च (ca) - and; एकपाणेन (ekapāṇena) - with one stake; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - O fortunate one; ते (te) - to you; नलेन (nalena) - by Nala; स (sa) - he; पराजितः (parājitaḥ) - was defeated; सरत्नकोशनिचयः (saratnakośanicayaḥ) - with collection of jewels and treasures; प्राणेन (prāṇena) - with life; पणितः (paṇitaḥ) - staked (as a wager); अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and;]
(Then commenced the dice-game of Puṣkara and Nala and with one stake, O fortunate one, by Nala he was defeated, with his collection of jewels and treasures, and even his life he wagered.)
Then, the game of dice between Puṣkara and Nala began. With a single stake, O fortunate one, he was defeated by Nala; he staked his collection of jewels, treasures, and even his very life. (03-77-18)
जित्वा च पुष्करं राजा प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत्। मम सर्वमिदं राज्यमव्यग्रं हतकण्टकम् ॥०३-७७-१९॥
jitvā ca puṣkaraṃ rājā prahasann idam abravīt। mama sarvam idaṃ rājyam avyagraṃ hatakaṇṭakam ॥03-77-19॥
[जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; च (ca) - and; पुष्करं (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara (proper noun, name of an opponent); राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; मम (mama) - my; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदं (idaṃ) - this; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - unagitated; हतकण्टकम् (hatakaṇṭakam) - with thorns removed;]
(Having conquered Puṣkara and the king, smiling, said this: "My entire this kingdom is unagitated, with thorns removed." (03-77-19))
After conquering Puṣkara, the king smiled and said, "Now all this kingdom of mine is calm and with all thorns removed." (03-77-19)
वैदर्भी न त्वया शक्या राजापसद वीक्षितुम्। तस्यास्त्वं सपरीवारो मूढ दासत्वमागतः ॥०३-७७-२०॥
vaidarbhi na tvayā śakyā rājāpasada vīkṣitum. tasyāstvaṃ saparīvāro mūḍha dāsatvamāgataḥ ॥03-77-20॥
[वैदर्भी (vaidarbhi) - the princess of Vidarbha; न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; राजापसद (rājāpasada) - by the king's lackey; वीक्षितुम् (vīkṣitum) - to look upon; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सपरीवारः (saparivāraḥ) - with your family; मूढ (mūḍha) - fool; दासत्वम् (dāsatvam) - slavery; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come (to);]
(The princess of Vidarbha not by you possible by the king's lackey to look upon. Of her you with your family, fool, have come to slavery.)
The princess of Vidarbha cannot be looked upon by you, a king's lackey. You and your whole family, O fool, have come to be slaves to her. (03-77-20)
न तत्त्वया कृतं कर्म येनाहं निर्जितः पुरा। कलिना तत्कृतं कर्म त्वं तु मूढ न बुध्यसे ॥ नाहं परकृतं दोषं त्वय्याधास्ये कथञ्चन ॥०३-७७-२१॥
na tattvayā kṛtaṁ karma yenāhaṁ nirjitaḥ purā। kalinā tatkṛtaṁ karma tvaṁ tu mūḍha na budhyase॥ nāhaṁ parakṛtaṁ doṣaṁ tvayyādhāsye kathañcana॥03-77-21॥
[न (na) - not; तत्त्वया (tat tvayā) - that by you; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; येन (yena) - by which; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - defeated; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कलिना (kalinā) - by Kali; तत् (tat) - that; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तु (tu) - but; मूढ (mūḍha) - fool; न (na) - not; बुध्यसे (budhyase) - understand; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; परकृतं (parakṛtaṁ) - done by another; दोषं (doṣaṁ) - fault; त्वय्य् (tvayi) - upon you; आधास्ये (ādhāsye) - will place; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Not by you was that action done by which I was defeated formerly. By Kali was that action done, but you, O fool, do not understand. Not will I place the fault done by another upon you in any way. (03-77-21))
That action by which I was previously defeated was not done by you. It was done by Kali, but you, O fool, do not understand. I will never lay the fault committed by another upon you. (03-77-21)
यथासुखं त्वं जीवस्व प्राणानभ्युत्सृजामि ते। तथैव च मम प्रीतिस्त्वयि वीर न संशयः ॥०३-७७-२२॥
yathāsukhaṁ tvaṁ jīvasva prāṇān abhyutsṛjāmi te। tathaiva ca mama prītis tvayi vīra na saṁśayaḥ॥03-77-22॥
[यथासुखं (yathāsukham) - as you please; as is comfortable; as pleases you; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; जीवस्व (jīvasva) - live; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life āns; vital breaths; अभ्युत्सृजामि (abhyutsṛjāmi) - I release; I set free; ते (te) - your; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; likewise; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; love; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; वीर (vīra) - hero; brave one; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(As you please, you live; I release your life-āns. Likewise, my affection in you, O hero, not doubt.)
Live as you wish; I set your life free. Likewise, my affection for you, O hero, is without doubt. (03-77-22)
सौभ्रात्रं चैव मे त्वत्तो न कदाचित्प्रहास्यति। पुष्कर त्वं हि मे भ्राता सञ्जीवस्व शतं समाः ॥०३-७७-२३॥
saubhrātraṃ caiva me tvatto na kadācitprahāsyati। puṣkara tvaṃ hi me bhrātā sañjīvasva śataṃ samāḥ॥03-77-23॥
[सौभ्रात्रं (saubhrātraṃ) - brotherhood; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; मे (me) - of me; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; न (na) - not; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; प्रहास्यति (prahāsyati) - will be abandoned; पुष्कर (puṣkara) - Puṣkara (proper noun); त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; सञ्जीवस्व (sañjīvasva) - live; शतं (śataṃ) - a hundred; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Brotherhood and indeed of me from you not ever will be abandoned. Puṣkara, you indeed my brother, live a hundred years.)
The brotherhood between us will surely never be abandoned by me because of you. Puṣkara, you are indeed my brother—may you live for a hundred years. (03-77-23)
एवं नलः सान्त्वयित्वा भ्रातरं सत्यविक्रमः। स्वपुरं प्रेषयामास परिष्वज्य पुनः पुनः ॥०३-७७-२४॥
evaṁ nalaḥ sāntvayitvā bhrātaraṁ satyavikramaḥ। svapuraṁ preṣayāmāsa pariṣvajya punaḥ punaḥ॥03-77-24॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; नलः (nalaḥ) - Nala (proper name); सान्त्वयित्वा (sāntvayitvā) - having soothed; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṁ) - brother; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - one of true valor; स्वपुरं (svapuraṁ) - his own city; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(Thus Nala, having soothed his brother, one of true valor, having embraced again and again, sent him to his own city.)
Thus, Nala, who was truly valiant, soothed his brother, embraced him repeatedly, and sent him back to his own city. (03-77-24)
सान्त्वितो नैषधेनैवं पुष्करः प्रत्युवाच तम्। पुण्यश्लोकं तदा राजन्नभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः ॥०३-७७-२५॥
sāntvito naiṣadhenaivaṁ puṣkaraḥ pratyuvāca tam। puṇyaślokaṁ tadā rājannabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ॥03-77-25॥
[सान्त्वितः (sāntvitaḥ) - having been consoled; नैषधेन (naiṣadhena) - by the king of Niṣadha; एवम् (evaṁ) - thus; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara (proper name); प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; तम् (tam) - to him; पुण्यश्लोकं (puṇyaślokam) - the famed one; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(Having been consoled by the king of Niṣadha thus, Puṣkara replied to him. The famed one then, O king, having saluted with joined palms.)
Thus consoled by Nala, Puṣkara replied to him—having bowed with joined hands, the illustrious king then spoke. (03-77-25)
कीर्तिरस्तु तवाक्षय्या जीव वर्षायुतं सुखी। यो मे वितरसि प्राणानधिष्ठानं च पार्थिव ॥०३-७७-२६॥
kīrtirastu tavākṣayyā jīva varṣāyutaṃ sukhī। yo me vitarasi prāṇānadhiṣṭhānaṃ ca pārthiva ॥03-77-26॥
[कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; तव (tava) - your; अक्षय्या (akṣayyā) - imperishable; जीव (jīva) - live; वर्षायुतम् (varṣāyutam) - ten thousand years; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; यः (yaḥ) - he who; मे (me) - my; वितरसि (vitarasi) - gives; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life (breaths); अधिष्ठानम् (adhiṣṭhānam) - support; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Let your fame be imperishable; live ten thousand years, happy. He who gives my life and support, O king.)
May your fame be imperishable; may you live happily for ten thousand years. O king, you are the one who grants me life and support. (03-77-26)
स तथा सत्कृतो राज्ञा मासमुष्य तदा नृपः। प्रययौ स्वपुरं हृष्टः पुष्करः स्वजनावृतः ॥०३-७७-२७॥
sa tathā satkṛto rājñā māsamuṣya tadā nṛpaḥ। prayayau svapuraṃ hṛṣṭaḥ puṣkaraḥ svajanāvṛtaḥ॥03-77-27॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; मासमुष्य (māsam-uṣya) - having stayed a month; तदा (tadā) - then; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; स्वपुरं (svapuraṃ) - to own city; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - gladdened; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; स्वजनावृतः (svajanāvṛtaḥ) - surrounded by his own people;]
(He, thus honored by the king, having stayed a month, then the king, departed to his own city, gladdened, Puṣkara, surrounded by his own people.)
Thus, after being honored by the king and having stayed a month, Puṣkara, delighted and accompanied by his family, departed for his own city. (03-77-27)
महत्या सेनया राजन्विनीतैः परिचारकैः। भ्राजमान इवादित्यो वपुषा पुरुषर्षभ ॥०३-७७-२८॥
mahatyā senayā rājanvinītaiḥ paricārakaiḥ। bhrājamāna ivādityo vapuṣā puruṣarṣabha ॥03-77-28॥

O bull among men, O king, (he was) attended by a great army of well-trained attendants, shining in appearance like the sun. (03-77-28)
प्रस्थाप्य पुष्करं राजा वित्तवन्तमनामयम्। प्रविवेश पुरं श्रीमानत्यर्थमुपशोभितम् ॥ प्रविश्य सान्त्वयामास पौरांश्च निषधाधिपः ॥०३-७७-२९॥
prasthāpya puṣkaraṃ rājā vittavantamanāmayam। praviveśa puraṃ śrīmānat­yarthamupaśobhitam॥ praviśya sāntvayāmāsa paurāṃśca niṣadhādhipaḥ॥03-77-29॥
[प्रस्थाप्य (prasthāpya) - having sent forth; पुष्करं (puṣkaram) - Puṣkara (proper noun); राजा (rājā) - the king; वित्तवन्तम् (vittavantam) - wealthy (one); अनामयम् (anāmayam) - free from illness; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; पुरं (puram) - city; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; उपशोभितम् (upaśobhitam) - adorned; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - consoled; पौरान् (paurān) - the citizens; च (ca) - and; निषधाधिपः (niṣadhādhipaḥ) - the lord of Niṣadha;]
(Having sent forth Puṣkara, the king, wealthy, free from illness, entered the city, prosperous, exceedingly adorned. Having entered, the lord of Niṣadha consoled the citizens and.)
After sending Puṣkara, the wealthy and healthy king entered the greatly adorned city. Having entered, the lord of Niṣadha comforted the citizens. (03-77-29)
